Full review: This game moved me in a way I've never experienced in a videogame. The story is engaging and beautiful. It's truly a marvel of plot creation. During the second half of the game, you may experience some mixed feelings as there is a major shift in story, but buckle in and you will quickly understand why this choice was made.
All other elements (graphics, animation, acting) are all noticeably better than the first game, with the notable exception of gameplay. I feel that this section could have been innovated on more than they ended up with, as it feels a bit to similar to TLOU: P1 in my opinion. There are improvements, but the system of combat is largely the same. This is why I gave it a 9/10 instead of a 10/10.

The result? An experience you can't find in movies, series, books and even in other games. The amazingly beautiful aesthetics of the chapters and cut-scenes are breathtaking, this improves the already evolved gameplay, proving that minor changes in combat, dogding and interactions can change the whole experience.
What about the narratives aspects of it? Mesmerizing, yet imperfect. Thankfully, the weak story of one of the protagonists and its excess of (not so useful) flashbacks is fastly omitted by a great character study of these two beings and their arcs that resonates in a laudable theme. The choices that the developers went through the game are bold, but creates an emotional roller coaster to the player improving his/her experience.
Conclusion? It's indeed a must play to all PlayStation user, the unification of an emotional plot and an active and incredible gameplay creates a truly wonderful game made with blood, sweat and tears from the developers and actors. Enjoy it.

Hard to fault. The pacing could have been a little tighter in areas and the game overall could have been a little shorter but in the end a great game. Definitely worth it if you're mature enough to enjoy a story that has fewer happy notes than most.

I enjoyed the game a lot. Gameplay and combat is really really really good and immersive. The graphics and sound design is top-notch. Nice story that makes you do hate certain characters at times(but in a way I am ok with), good game play IMO, awesome graphics for a ps4, superb acting and all that.

I advise you TO read it in full!!!
Yes, you are all so slow-witted?)
Of the majority of all those who commented here - no one understood anything. The meaning of the game is much deeper than you think. Did you not understand at first, did you still have doubts? Try again!
Everything happens the same as happened with the first part, only here the plot is more complex and a little deeper (I'm not saying that it's better, for me it's on an equal footing, but it's more complicated). Even during the passage of the first part, few people thought that the plot was built on the relationship of the characters and everyone did not like the ending, but after just a couple of months, absolutely everyone said that the game was a masterpiece! The way it is.
    But come on...

Cicadas are terrorists/bandits who killed soldiers, hanged them, shot them.... Abby, Owen, Jerry (Abby's father) can be said to be terrorists!
And what if they have a doctor?!
First of all, what makes you think the Doc was the last one in the world?
Secondly, ally that we have that is not human?? She does not have the right to live, since she is immune??
Third, I repeat, Cicadas are terrorists. What if they create a vaccine and do not revive humanity, but want to make the whole world dance to their tune with offended women-jocks at the head.

The cicadas (and in particular Jerry, the neurosurgeon) put the unconscious girl right on the operating table, and she didn't even Wake up after drinking a lot of water.

My opinion: Ellie is a harmless girl, she didn't just kill people, she didn't do anything wrong. Joel is the same.(Yes, he'd had his sins before, but not when he was with Ellie, and it wasn't about cicadas.) Cicadas, had to wait until Ellie wakes up, agrees to the operation, also ask Joel's opinion, because Ellie has become almost like a daughter for Joel, and here they want some incomprehensible people, according to the soldiers/ state/ civilians - terrorists, to cut her to make a supposedly "vaccine".
Ellie could easily have refused, having come all this way with Joel and found out that she wouldn't survive the operation. There are no hopeless situations - Ellie could say: "Guys, I'm only 15 (at the time of the ending, she was 15), I didn't see the world.... Let me live, it's my right, I'm a man like you. After some time, when I decide to do it, we will do it. Maybe when I'm old, but at the same time, Jerry will teach other doctors how to perform this operation and try to make vaccines."TK at that moment, only he could hold it. And that's it, there would be no conflicts.

You can say that while Ellie will live to an old age, many will already die or she will die, but THINK with YOUR BRAIN at some point, this is her life and she has the right to dispose of as she wants.... the same way you manage your own lives, what's worse than that?

I think Joel did the right thing. He gave Ellie the right to live, although she didn't really understand it, but I hope she will in the future. And it's all Jerry's fault, (Abby's father), THAT he would have made the VACCINE, and it didn't work, what's next? He would have just killed the child....
    And killed how?
I didn't give her a chance to recover.
He forced Marlin to do this, because she was initially against it, and Jerry began to persuade her to perform the operation, that is, to kill Ellie FOR nothing, for the sake of some hope, although she knew Ellie from the cradle and promised her mother to look after her.
I taught other people about it, and in General I forced all the situations that followed - Jerry. Yes, perhaps he wanted to do the best, help humanity, and so on, but the approach he chose..... Oh, what is not correct.
    9/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game gets a lot of hate that I think is undeserved because people do not like how this game handled the idea of "Revenge is bad."

I think that this game handled the idea well. Ellie threw away pretty much everything to go for revenge and Abby's story was basically Joel 2.0, an otherwise terrible person gets a shot at redemption through a friendship with someone that they did not have to help or stick around.

The gameplay is 9/10 because the sections controlling the boat sucks, the graphics are 10/10, and I would give the story a solid 9/10 even if it didn't end how most people wanted.

A lot of people have a problem with how this game handled the idea of revenge being bad but then leave glowing reviews for the Red Dead games as well as God of War which are saying pretty much the same thing just in a slightly different manner. Spoilers ahead for both.

Arthur died for nothing in Red Dead 2 because John tried to get revenge on Micah. This led to the events of the first game which led to John dying and his son, who was never supposed to be an outlaw, becoming a continuation of the man that John was.

Kratos went on a murdering spree of the Gods in the first few God of War games and ultimately lost everything. In the 2018 reboot we see a man who is broken and trying to be done with the violence and we see how much it weighs on him now. He spends pretty much the entire game trying to tell his son that revenge is not the way.

My best advice would be to just get the game and give it a go. Best case scenario, you like it like a lot of the fans of the original game did, worst case, you don't like it. For me this is as good as the first game if not just a bit better even if the story is significantly more depressing at the end (not that the first game had a happy ending either).

Well I will be something of the most direct, I am from Peru and I did not know whether to translate this into English but well, and after the game I could say that it is a masterpiece, I did not know where to start for me the characters are not sincerely forced since Everything has a purpose because it is the story of each one since it feels that not everyone or no one is the bad guy because each one has done too many things like Ellie thanks to his "revenge" that in the end he does not end up doing it and that's when Most of them complained to Neil Druckmann but no one realized that he also wrote the first installment and that it is politically correct for me there is nothing wrong that depends on each one, honestly Ellie's part I did not enjoy it much since I felt that It was wrong and there was a lot of repetition in eliminating enemies, I feel it unsatisfactory and too repetitive, but the game with what it wants to represent is quite good since The Last of Us Part II is what hatred wants to represent. To the depression we had over the ending and the death of Joel, like when Ellie finds herself overwhelmed by not killing Abby, but not many came to understand the ending and that's what bothered others, Ellie gets to learn the lesson where forgive Abby with Lev and in the end Joel, I feel that it was a good ending and just oh that it is also a lesson for us. But i don’t think it they should have killed off one of the most beloved characters in gaming, but it did set the threat of abby and the WLF’s and i think that playing as abby is a different experience to play as the villain , i think that abby plays similar to joel with the combat being similar and she helps lev and yara similar to how joel helped ellie. I am in no way saying that abby is a replacement to playing as joel but i think Naughty Dog did a great job of creating a sequel to the beloved first game. Expand

En cuanto a gráficos es asombroso, en gameplay también, y si tengo que admitir que en historia este juego es un poco flojo en comparación al primero. Y la muerte de Joel no tiene el porque ser épica, si todos los personajes de esta saga murieron con un final trágico. I went into this game blind, with only having beaten the first game and avoiding all trailers and reviews. I think the story and character development are amazing, if very intense. I loved Abby's character, and by the time the credits rolled, I identified and empathized with her more than I did Joel or Ellie. I couldn't believe the risks that Naughty Dog took with this game.

Be warned however, as this is the most violent game that I have ever played and makes the first game look pretty tame by comparison. The level of violence coupled with the intense emotion and trauma makes this game NOT for the faint of heart. I'm being serious.

I am docking a point from my rating for one reason: Santa Barbara. That's all I'm going to say. If that chapter was removed, this game would be a 10/10 to me.

This sequel juxtaposes the first in its themes. The first game explores a blossoming relationship, that leads to opening up, and the picking up of your pieces to go on. This second shows you what it feels like to be shattered. Characters face consequences for their actions and must deal with trauma as their choices collide and cause a train wrecks that brings their world's crashing down. It explores a hard descent before a slow uncertain ascent. You see all the ugly details. Details that would have only been referential in the first, are put on full display. It mirrors itself and examines itself in a way that provokes the player. The game is brutal and gory much like the first, but it is unrelenting. Players do not know what they are in for as the story opens in relaxed settlement. It is beautiful and safe, but there is a sense of dread hanging in the air- unseen by the characters and felt by players. You know a conflict will begin soon. The sequence that begins the quest is painful to look at. Especially if you have the background and shared the experiences of Joel and Ellie from their journey across the U.S. What takes place in this sequel is heartbreaking for many reasons. Those reasons evolve and change. It will continually throttle your emotions and deliver one punch after the other. As the full picture unfolds, these reasons for the melancholic tale are only exacerbated as the narrative drags you further into these dark places. The game is not fun in the traditional sense. The gameplay is a fantastic, smooth experience. Detailed to the fullest with simple but effective and immersive mechanics and gameplay. It is fun to play. One large part of the game, however, is the very same story that I said is relentless. That is why it isn't fun. The story, while not fun, is immersive, engaging, and is entertaining... and messy. It undoubtedly has pacing issues. But these pacing issues are resolved as the narrative slowly intertwines and brings all its aspects to head before inevitably wilting into its end. The story gives the player time to experience wholesome moments of love to alleviate the heavy atmosphere, but before long, assorted pieces of the narrative's tone outweighs other pieces. The beats and progression of the characters and all their stories ebb and flow. The game explores humanity with a dive into the depths of the inky black emotions of hate, disgust, selfishness, and deceit. Eventually, there is a long slog upwards, but you really have to push and pull through the waves out of those depths. When you break the surface of the waters, you see little glimmers of hope like stars in the night sky. If we just squint we can see finer details that can highlight the better parts of us, the selflessness, sympathy, understanding, and forgiveness. We see the forest for the trees, and can analyze ourselves. How much do we really understand about ourselves? About each other? This games asks a lot of the player but it gives back. It is not a must play. It is a must finish. You may not like the direction the story goes, but it is worth the experience. It brings itself together in shaky, exhausted fashion that mimics Ellie and likely the player. Its tale comes to its simultaneously climatic and anti-climactic ending as it sends its messages home to wrap up Joel and Ellie's legacy. Expand

I think this games are wonderfull. The first game had mixed feelings but not as much as in the second. The story in the first, despite being complex for itself, was much simpler and the people who came out as fans of the game therefore had similar expectations for the other. The second game includes much more complex emotions, difficult for anyone to digest, has great meaning and great human and existential weight. This game (the second one) seemed more real to me than the other one, and the mechanics and graphics only improved that. I felt that the characters were real people, I understood perfectly what creators wanted to make us see and feel. That nobody is good or bad, nobody is special... This is not only a game but a story of life itself and an analysis of human behavior. I understand why so many people are dissatisfied because they had a simple and superficial expectation derived from the first game, but that doesn't correspond to the complexity and magnitude of the second. I watch or play without real expectations, ready to absorb everything I can of something. This game deserved that kind of fans, and creators risked making one last game with maturity rather than complacency to others, they did what they did for the love of art and without moral responsibilities. Because that is how it should be, the story is created by the artist and we only subscribe to it. Not them to us.

Tip.

Initially I was annoyed that I had to play as Abby. I did not want, I refused, I stomped my feet...

And yet, I gave it a chance. Slowly but surely they made me care about a character I hated with a burning fire only a little while before. They humanised her, they showed how everything is not black and white. That the world is not just good and bad but many subtle shades of grey in between. It was hard to play in moments but rewarding and exciting. The game-play and graphics were beyond excellent.

Sadly this game will not be recognised for it's greatness until the video game community is filled with more self aware, empathetic, and emotionally intelligent community members. That is not an insult to my community, more just a depressing observation.

The game made me angry, filled with hate and sadness. about abby and the devs. maybe that is what they wanted to do. and they succeeded. and then they let me know the villain better. also a sad, depressed, damaged character, who just wanted revenge and justice. finding her humanity in her enemies.it also seems like the devs were mocking the player, that abby gets abilities that joel used in the first game. shivers, moving blanks and ladders,
there are just a few minor storytelling issues which seem dumb, like a pregnant women is going to a patrol or smth. in her 8month. what?
on a review i watched, someone said, they not only killed joel, they also killed ellie from the first game. and yes, thats the case. which i have to say, that takes balls and they are paying the price for such a move. they could make many more games, where ellie is the sweet and bratty heroine. and they get easily their good score of their fans.
they build characters that are mostly likable and relatable and brought them into hell. kinda a place where joel was at the start of the first game. but at the end, they managed to break out again. abby did in the theater and later ellie at the beach. i am not surprised that people are angry about that, but for me it was a brave move and takes balls to do that.
i liked all new characters and hated old ones. tommy became at the end an absolutely unlikable person after all the time he was just so supportive and kind. which is not a bad thing. people change. i liked to follow them to those transitions.
i cant not like a game that gives me all kind of emotions like no other game.
we already have a totally good woman we follow to her end in the game walking dead season 1-4. clementine is most of the good and tries to do the right thing and is just a heroine. we already know such story. i really like that this didnt happen with ellie, but quite the opposite. she became the villian.

i cant say i loved playing the game, and i cant say i hated playing it. it is a new experience for me and that i cant denied and thats why the story is for me one of the best.

also graphics are fantastic and the gameplay is diverse and taking out enemies in areas can turn out smoothly or just into a horrible shootout until the last bullet. only the quicktime events are just unnecessary. just square or just triangle. why not make it more complicated, instead of smashing one button, use a combination fast enough to finish it, or use the controller much more, moving around or smth.i am sure that wouldnt take too much work.

it is not a masterpiece, it isnt perfect, it has flaws, in the story, in gameplay. but overall. it is amazing and just for that i bought a 2nd hand ps4 to play TLOU remastered first and then the 2nd part.

To start off the graphics are amazing and are generally stunning. It feels like you are actually in the game and looks like Ps5 graphics before the Ps5 even came out
The soundtrack really pulls into the story hand adds a lot to the story
The story is where people generally hate the game, the beginning Joel’s death makes people feel anger and pain influencing them to hate the characters to hate them. As you play as Ellie you feel hatred for all the characters your killing. But then the story takes a turn and makes you play the villain, you then start to feel emotion towards characters you use to hate. The games makes you feel so much emotional on what to think about the characters. Many people dislike the ending because of how Ellie lets Abby live. But this ending leaves character development on Ellie, she turns into a person of hatred
and and she pushes everyone away. Honestly I can see why people dislike this game but I love it.

The hate of the story really seems to stem entirely from a few leaks without any gameplay or context. You may not agree with the characters, but that's the point. This game could've so easily been some fan service where Ellie and Joel go on adventures together and Joel faces no consequences for the ending of the first game. But no, the game doesn't hold your hand and give you what you want, it makes you think, to see the views of the characters you're playing as. The switch to Abby dragged a little in its first half, I will say that, but once you meet Lev and Yara the story picks up a lot. The anger over Joel's death is understandable... if you haven't played the game. The world of the last of us is bleak, people die and it's almost never in some heroic last stand. Think of Sam from the first game, he and Ellie have a really cute dynamic set up, but he still dies, and it has no glamor to it. Joel was a murdering smuggler who did nothing for anyone but himself and the ones he cares most about and his death as a consequence of this fits in line with both games' story. It's a bleak and horrible world and someone wanting Joel dead after killing his way through the U.S. makes so much sense, hell even think of David from the first game who attempts to kill Joel and spare Ellie. The ending of the last of us 2 makes some people extremely upset because Ellie goes on this whole adventure to find and kill Abby for what she's done, but ends up sparing her. The people who dislike this ending say that it makes the whole game pointless, but then what makes it different from the last of us' ending? Joel and Ellie fight through the U.S. in a big adventure to save the world, but in the end, the main character can't themself to finish their mission despite all they've gone through. Complaints of Part 2's ending could often be said of the first game. As for graphics, they're amazing and look like something on PS5. Beautiful environments with amazingly tiny details to make the world feel real. The gameplay is a definite improvement over the first game with a better build melee system, the removal of the shiv mechanic, better stealth sections, and extremely fun/satisfying gunplay. Even if the story was just terrible, all of the work put into it makes it very pretty and fun and I'd say would probably be at least a 5/10. Luckily the story isn't terrible. Best thing I can say is, play the game, even if you hated it from the leaks and listened to youtuers say it's bad, just play the game. Please just put aside all the opinions of the people who you've heard talk about it (good or bad) and make your own decision. I went into this game on the side that it was bad and they **** up the last of us' story, and by about 3 hours in I loved it. There's too much hate this year and we need some hope, so stop being so pessimistic and just get the game on sale and play it, worst that can happen is you have an actual argument on why it's a 0/10 game., but my bet is, even if your opinion on the story barely changes, that 0 would look a lot more like a 5. Good job to everyone who worked hard on this game, I hope you know that a lot of us still love it. Also, Neil Druckman isn't pushing an agenda lol, there were 2 gay characters in the first game too, only thing new is that a trans person exists. Expand

We're in an age that "it's cool to hate", and the youtubers know this and milk it in a way that you genuinely start to believe what this "person" says...

And I tried to forget all the hate towards the game only concentrate in the game's story and immersion... Guess what? The game's amazing! I genuinely enjoyed, even the combat system that I didn't like in the first one, i loved it in this one, and learned a lesson, never trust youtubers because some of them are being paid to hate on certain games only to influence their followers... Not all of us think the same way, so play it, enjoy a deep story its not a perfect game, it's true, but for me it is a perfect comeback from all that hate. Good job naughty dog

in my opinion this game is great but not perfect. its gameplay is just incredible, it has a lot of action or stealth if that is what you like. its graphics is something that you cannot see at all its glory in a YouTube video. the music is good but not remarkable, there are no memorable tracks but the ones they have get the job done. now the controversy the narrative, the narrative is good tending to decent. like the story may not be good for everyone but still that is not a enough reason to give this game a 0/10 or a 1/10 and this is the reason I do this review. so well the story is enjoyable like its not really bad neither really good like the last game "The Last of Us" even though I only see one major problem with the narrative, I am a person that can enjoy a lot of stuff and understand almost everybody's preferences so I get why people dont like this game but for me this is unacceptable. when you are like about 15 hours in a really tense moment the game cuts and goes to a flashback. All the tension thay managed to make got completely lost. like you can do it later but it is not going to be the same. And it would be ok if the flashback would be short but it takes like other 7-15 hours and then the scene goes back and maybe you forgot about it already. now other controversy, the ending, the ending got me like furious due to the game story and then the ending is well. how can i say it it feels empty like something is missing. like quick flashbacks ( people that played the game know what I mean ) and you maybe can understand the decision.

    Secondary stuff
the characters well they are like empty. they are not as good as the first game but get the job done.

The weapons. the weapons are good ( I am not going to mention them due to maybe someone taking it as an spoiler ) every gun is usable and fun to use and have different strong-points and its weak-points so if you want to be more efficient you may need to exchange once in a while but every weapon gets the main job done, to kill enemies.

My conclusion is that the game is worth at least giving it a shot. or even only for the gameplay. the characters are decent and get the job done, the weapons are fun to use and good in most situations.
even though the narrative is not perfect and is disorganized it is still playable

But the game does a good job of getting you to understand Abby's perspective as you play her part. Get ready to experience a lot of conflicting emotions because this is a game which makes you face your own internal biases. Expand

A technical marvel of a game polished to great lengths along with fluid animations which makes the gameplay engaging and an unhinged story, though not perfect, is still just as entertaining and emotional as it's predecessor.

This game is depressing and I love it. Some minor issues. But not enough for me to dislike the game in anyway. I understand that half of the player base doesn't like the story, but I also don't really care. I loved the story. I got the game that I wanted. I'm playing it for the 3rd time right now.

In my opinion the game is one of the best ones ever made!!! This is storytelling on a whole new level. The story is revolutionary and brave and reading now the reviews, some people just couldn't handle the plot twist in the beginning and the twist in the middle. In fact this twists made the game outstanding and it's not fair at all, that such a good game gets so many bad reviews. Please NaughtyDog: Keep making such great games and stories.

Beautiful game. Great sequel, which was a risky move, but didn't shy away from continuing the story the way it was meant to be told. You get immersed in the world and in the way the characters feel from the very beginning, from feeling the pain, the anger, the craving for revenge and that sense that you won't allow anyone get into the way, to the point of feeling yourself becoming aBeautiful game. Great sequel, which was a risky move, but didn't shy away from continuing the story the way it was meant to be told. You get immersed in the world and in the way the characters feel from the very beginning, from feeling the pain, the anger, the craving for revenge and that sense that you won't allow anyone get into the way, to the point of feeling yourself becoming a monster. The story telling was stellar; some cuts were risky and took you out of the pathos of the moment, but the way it was done feels intentional to make you breath and see for then trying to understand what brought everyone to that moment. I enjoyed then seeing supporting characters contradict themselves at one point, which shows how the feelings that the developers had you go through, can change people in many ways. the game play felt odd for some reason though. Prepare yourselves to cry your eyes out throughout, scream at the tv and grieve to the point of hating the creators, but then to think back at the first game and accept that this was the only way to tell this story. If it had been told in any other way we would have complained that it was the same thing rehashed; so I really admire the creators for taking this risk and not bending to fan service, but punching us in the gut. And trust me, when I saw the situation that starts the journey, I had to stop and cry my heart out for 30 minutes straight. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
