It's a game designed around story but I was never drawn in because I did not identify with the playable characters(s), nor understand or agree with their actions.

It's a game designed around story but I was never drawn in because I did not identify with the playable characters(s), nor understand or agree with their actions.

The original was amazing for me because it grapples with moral conundrums; and realistically makes the player think about what you would do in a destroyed world to survive or help the people you love.

The sequel did not do that for me, so it was just a tedious slog through watching the characters you play make decisions that irritate you.

The Gameworld is also lost its coherence. In the last game it actually felt like a desolate place where civilization has basically collapsed, with pockets of people or humanity left where you struggle to survive. The factions in the new game are thriving and the plot driver of a war between them doesn't make sense in the context of a world where there is plenty of room for both to expand, and both have plenty of resources (and therefore have no reason to fight).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t know what people expect in a video game they kill of a main character that’s what happens in post apocalyptic worlds! It makes Joel’s story even more fitting. Abby you wanted vengeance for her fathers murder.. and therefore so did Elly. It’s not hard to understand what the writers were going for - an eye for an eye. If you enjoyed the first game then you will like this for the mechanics and graphics. The storyline wasn’t as strong and people moaning about a very small LGBQT storyline really need to look at themselves in the mirror- stop foaming at the mouth about something that’s nothing to do or impacts you whatsoever. Because of the graphics, the mechanics, the music and something that i will be killed about is the story. This game for no reason i hated or like most of it is because of Joel's death and Ellie being a lesbian. The end was well not that good, but not that bad. I give it a 9, because i had to play as Abby's POV 10 hours it was like Ellie's game-play but you just play with a different character. Overall the game is good i love it. 9/10 must play Expand

It falls short in the story by making us see the death of Joel by a gruesome way suffer, slowly dying in his own blood it was the saddest thing I had to feel until I found him only to see him die with a final blow in his head. that made me wanted to hunt her down and then I had to play as Abby for many hours and the only think I was thinking was when I will finish with her. The narrative was always emotionally compelling, and the emotional roller coaster was intense, heartbreaking, and enlightening. But, it failed to achieve for me what the game was trying to do. I found difficulty sympathizing with characters, new and old, a problem that wasn't present in the first game. I found that The Last of Us Part II was very different than part I. Part I focused on paternal love, where part II focused much on hate. This of course isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the tone change was a hard roadblock to get over. The immense complexity and depth of the characters was clearly evident, however the story tended to cut corners in unsatisfying and seemingly lazy ways. The biggest failure was the pacing. The narrative tried to achieve parallel plot structure but chose to go down both narratives one at a time instead of neck and neck, even playing sections of the game in the past which eliminated a sense of surprise in coming events. The verdict; The Last of Us Part II challenged me emotionally and followed a mostly satisfying narrative supported by incredible gameplay, but the narrative shortcomings and very poor pacing tainted the experience. Play the Last of Us Part I first, and then I implore you to experience Part II and come to your own conclusion. Expand

Oh man...I played this directly after finishing Last Of Us Part I for the first time. And boy was it a jump. Story wise it was still fantastic. The main story hits hard, it's shocking, it's emotional, it's dramatic. But gameplay wise...oh God. What a chore.

    FLASHBACKS

I really wanted this game to end. I hate flashbacks so much and to force the player not to just watch a flashback...but to PLAY THE CHARACTERS IN THE FLASHBACK is a whole new level of my hatred haha. At one point it's like "3 years earlier." You beat that part then it says "1 year earlier" then you beat that part and it says, "3 months earlier." I was like STOP IT! Let me move forward! I think it could've cut out like 17 flashbacks and we would've still understood the points they were trying to make. There is no excuse for this amount of flashbacks.

It doesn't help that many of the flashbacks are such mundane, boring things. Playing guitar, forcing you to play fetch with a dog, forcing you to play a mini-game where you shoot suction cupped arrows at targets...forcing you to walk through an entire museum and look at every exhibit and every display while WALKING (and not letting you sprint). And you cannot skip these things. You have to do them in order to move on to the next level. WHY?!

And if the flashback itself wasn't painful enough to be forced to play through...the game forces you to play as the character as you travel to the place to do the boring thing in each flashback. Going to a museum? Great. You have to HIKE THERE, and SWIM, and travel for miles before reaching it. Just to go inside and do a boring thing. Fun. So. Fun.

It makes you travel everywhere in general. Some of the moments where I almost turned the game off are when characters have to reach a building that's super far away. There's a cinematic where they're like "oh look that building is WAY over there. Let's go." and I expect it to cut to me there. But nope...the cinematic ends and my character is standing miles away. And now here I go...I have to once again hike, climb, and swim my way all the way over there. Because that's so very fun to do...

    SKILL TREE

The skill tree is also strange. You level it up downward. So for instance if the top-most skill is crafting med-kits and the bottom-most skill is "increased health." Then you're forced to purchase every pointless skill in that skill tree just to get to "increased health." Whereas in the last game you can level up whatever skill you wanted, whenever you wanted, which was nice. I found myself just gathering things and pointlessly level up skills just to reach the one I really wanted. Felt very wasteful, as if they knew they were just designing skills to get in the way. As opposed to actually designing helpful ones that would be useful.

    PLAYING AS TWO CHARACTERS

Just like in the first game, you play as another character in this one. I wont say who. But it goes on for so long that you kinda forget why you're playing as this person. You do a whole bundle of side-objectives that don't feel that relevant. And they have their own entire skill tree and level up system so it's a whole other branch of the game that pulls you away from the main story. It feels odd. As if they couldn't decide which storyline to commit to so they tried to just squeeze them both in together.

The game basically doubles down on all the things I hated about it by adding a second character. Only this time it makes you go through many of the exact same areas that you already beat as the first character. Spent a lot of time sneaking around this area before? Sucks...now you gotta do it again as THIS CHARACTER.

    OVERALL

A highly repetitive game that I wished would end many different times. In-between all the filler and fluff though is a solid story screaming for attention. But it's a chore to find, and a chore to stick with.

The game has the worst story in history of mankind. I would rather go back in time and listen to cavemen story than to play this game and get tormented with its torturing story. The game is no fun it is misery. If you love to get tormented then this game is for you, but if you want a fun game, don't play this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not only an amazing continuation to LoU Part 1, but it's an achievement that takes the torch from Part 1 and continues to bring adult narratives and themes and REAL FEELINGS into the gaming industry. If you don't read any farther, this game is ART and will make you FEEL THINGS and it's amazing to feel EVERYTHING they put into it - you're supposed to be conflicted...you're SUPPOSED to be affected. Let it happen. This is a trend I'm seeing more and more in mature-rated games and a trend I'm here for. 10/10 HAVE, and WILL, play again and again. For more specific thoughts, read on.

The gameplay feels comfortable and familiar, but the tweaks they made to ramp up the AI and how you can now fight them were ABSOLUTELY NEEDED! The dodge mechanic alone saved my life more than anything, but the combat differences between characters were such a good touch. Not only are you playing different people, it FEELS like you're playing different people. I tend to play these games the same way because I'm a chicken and get scared easily, but I found myself getting spotted with Ellie and panicking whereas getting spotted as Abby felt like, "fine, you want some?", and that's unique for me. Sneak and stab is my go-to.

While I know that the narrative is the most controversial part of this game, for me, it was the BEST part of the game. We all fell in love with the characters from Part 1, and to see how their stories progressed and the pain they found after thinking they'd achieved happiness...I was, again, there for it. It's HARD to walk in the shoes of someone that's hurt you...but if you can't find any empathy after the amazing story you participate in...that's a bummer. And maybe a teaching point you should consider learning from.

If you want to just mash buttons and kill zombies and not have to think too hard or feel feelings (believe me, sometimes this is what I crave), this might not be the game for you. But if you want to conquer feelings of loss and pain and achieve forgiveness and understanding...this is a masterclass I encourage you to take.

The graphics are impressive even 5 years after it's release, especially when it comes to face expression and details. My only problem with it is the story, and NO, I'm not talking about Joel being killed in the first 2 hours. My biggest problems with it's ending.

Basically after going a rampage for about 15 hours looking for Joel's murderer, Ellie decides to have a family with her girlfriend, Dina, and her son. If you ask me, that would've been the perfect ending for Ellie, where she realizes that revenge wouldn't make her feel any better, and how all that **** is behind her now, but she decides to go after Abby again, making the game 3-4 hours longer than it needed to be.
All of that culminates in Ellie fighting Abby, letting her go, going back home and realising her family moved away.
All of that makes you feel that all of the time you spent on the game was completely thrown away. I even thought the game would still carry on after that part because it just doesn't feel like an ending at all if you ask me. But it's still a good game at the end of the day.

I tried very hard to find some way to like this game, and I was successful, but just barely.

The Last of Us Part 2, though graphically beautiful, is not a logical continuation of part 1. It feels more like a fiction within a fiction, a deliberately structured by-the-book revenge allegory that ultimately delivers a relevant social message but at the cost of mangling the plot themes and character development events of the original game. In fact the hardcover placard contained within the limited edition written by Druckmann himself alludes to such a plot contrivance.
The question I suppose, is why? Why did they choose this path for part 2? Why castrate the characters and story of one of the greatest games of all time just to deliver an admittedly artful social commentary? Based on the new characters, events and story as it all plays out this game should have been a standalone entry in an original universe. I think it would have done great on its own. It makes no sense whatsoever that ND cannibalized the The Last of Us characters and universe to create this game. It’s not like they needed the pre-sales dollars (apropos the notoriously deceptive pre-release advertising) to fund it. Their reputation alone would have guaranteed their budget.

I have to conclude that the answer is simple: Colossal miscalculation. I don’t think the ND dev team deliberately set out to eviscerate The Last of Us storyline potential and anger the game’s fans. Somewhere along the development trail the plot analysis -vs- target demographic ball got dropped in a significant way. While trying to create an impactful work of art they lost sight of their number one mandate: serve your audience. Of course they had to know or at least suspect that the final plot line would earn the ire of a portion of their loyal fan base. But I don’t think they realized the extent of their error until after the massive numbers of negative user reviews started rolling in. By then it was too late.

It is true that there are lots of gushing 9/10 star reviews out there. Many are reactionary to the negative ones and thus act as balancers; the informed reviews are coming from multimedia critics more attuned to the allegorical architecture than to the fictional world in which it takes place. And yes to the game’s credit it IS beautifully presented with great acting, visuals and gameplay. There are also some moving and interesting flashbacks. Ultimately however, the good elements of the game are overshadowed by the infuriating overarching main plot.

More disheartening - in spite of the game’s gut-twisting opening scenes which set up the revenge plot - the writing team could actually have saved the story to some degree by providing us with a satisfying, contextually consistent ending. However, instead of remaining true to the violent nature of the game universe and giving us the closure that Ellie’s character most certainly would have demanded, they opted for a formulaic ‘high road’ finale that leaves the player staring at his monitor in stunned disbelief. Given the amazingly high body count over the extended play through, the absurd ending sequence was the loudest WTF moment I’ve ever seen in a game, and I’ve played a LOT of games in the last 30 years.

After finishing, I mulled it over for a few days before writing this review and settling on a medium score. In this at least, Druckmann’s team succeeded in their stated goal of engaging the player to examine the revenge conundrum. I did, and while I agree with the real-world synopsis that revenge-seeking needlessly perpetuates a cycle of violence that ultimately harms everyone it touches—The Last Of Us is not the real world. It is a game and it depicts a world in which humanity is on its last brutal march to annihilation. ND created this world and the gameplay delivered it: no quarter, no compromise, ‘endure and survive.’

So…everything else remaining the same, maddening initial plot premise and all, here is how The Last of Us Part 2 SHOULD have ended:

‘ We don’t see the fiery explosion of the awkwardly thrown Molotov as it engulf’s Ellie’s battered enemies. There’s no need. Instead we see the fire reflected in Ellie’s eyes as she watches briefly, perhaps feeling a quick stab of sadness for all the death - mixed incongruously with a weary satisfaction.

As the image of her face fades with the waning flames, we hear Ellie say in a half whisper, “that’s that.” ‘

Had they at least thrown their core fans this small bone, or something similar, I think their user reviews would have been much higher. As they left it, well….If they’ve got any savvy new hires up at ND, I sure hope they’re putting in a sh*t ton of overtime thinking up ways to retcon this albatross out of the canon and win back some of their fans. Indeed, with their shiny new HBO contract, they have a golden opportunity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm honestly confused by some of the reviews I see here. I feel like they were playing a different game to me.

    - I can understand being upset that you're favourite character died, but we're living in a post Game of Thrones world here, that's just part of the narrative
    - I can understand (at least on a theoretical level) being annoyed that this game was trying to be inclusive, and add more representation to the main characters - although personally I'm happy to see that, I think it's well overdue in video games. However even if that's something you're against, it seems reductive to reduce the entire rating of the story down to a 0/10 based purely on that.
    - Perhaps a more understandable critique for me is the level of violence in the game, though I have the impression most of the negative reviews are from people who were fans of the first game, and that had just as much violence

Anyway, maybe I should write more about what I experienced, and less about what others experienced. For me this is the most nuanced story I've seen in a video game. I was a huge fan of the first game, but, with all the love in the world, the first game's story is pretty tried. I think I loved the story despite of the worn out clichés, simply because the delivery of the actors was so fantastic.

The story here is doing something difference. It's good precisely because it's not a one decided good guys against the bad guys story, but rather the sometimes good guys against the sometimes good guys. There were moments in this game that were completely gut wrenching (not just early on in the game, when the main character is killed), but throughout. The ending especially, I've never cried so much at the ending of a game, and that for me is the highest praise I could give a game.

The gameplay/visuals/music is much the same as the first game, if this were simply the same story as the first game, continuing, I wouldn't have given this such a high score. However the fact that the story is so unbelievably compelling, is what drives me to give it such a high review.

Nowhere near as good as the first, but still good. The gameplay is fantastic. Even on normal difficulty it can get really challenging. There isn't always a lot of ammo and shooting both people and infected has never felt so fun. The stealth was also so fun and so filled with tension. The story is where this game kinda falls apart. There are a lot of plot holes and contrivances. I also thought that the game was kinda in the wrong order. You first play as Ellie and then you play as another character and you play through the same days as you did Ellie. If you rearrange the scenes, it becomes a lot less messy. At first, the direction the story took seemed baffling, but over time, I grew to understand why they took the route they took. Another problem is that many of the character deaths don't have that huge of an effect on the story. Other than that though... Idk, I didn't really hate this at all. This was great. To me personally, plot holes don't really ruin a story for me, unless there is nothing holding the story together and I wouldn't really say that counts for this game. I liked this a lot and if you don't, that's fine, but don't get mad at me just because I liked a game you didn't. I liked this a lot and even with the huge story problems, I still couldn't not like this a lot. Hot take, I know. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing game with the WORST CONCLUSION EVER MADE IN FICTION. Everyone crying about Joel dying in the first 2 hours should honestly stop crying and start looking at the big picture lol. Joel had it coming since he killed a literal whole army just for 1 little girl. No matter how much we all like him, he was in the wrong and his actions had consequences. It also gave Ellie a pretty good revenge story for us to follow (which just gets thrown away in the end like nothing). I also didn't mind the fact that we had around 8 hours of Abby gameplay. I was absolutely determined to scatter that woman in pieces, but playing her and seeing her and Lev's side of the story was actually still really enjoyable and intresting, untill she absolutely annihilated Ellie and her friends which made absolutely no sense to me since she had every single advantage over Abby except raw strenght. Also why did we had to still specifically had to play that part?? That neither made any sense whatsovever. The last 10 minutes of the game were probably the worst 10 minutes out of any game i've ever played. Ellie was 3 seconds away from finally achieving the goal she's been thriving for for a whole year, and because of some dumb 1 millisecond flashback, she just lets her go???? How does that make any sense?? why did she even leave the farm in the first place then?? Why did she even leave JACKSON in the first place??? Its like the flashback told her that Joel wouldn't want her to do this or sum, when that would be the literal opposite. I enjoyed watching everyone die like the **** they were ( especially that stupid mexican who spit on Joel) but how are you going to kill and torture hundreds of people and let the ONLY person you were after go after she killed almost everyone you cared about and annihilated you TWICE? Nothing, and absolutely nothing made sense in the last 2 chapters. I could probably point out a lot more about it, but im not going to.

The positives of this game are the absolutely stunning graphics (def the best graphics ive ever seen for a game), the story itself, the main protagonist and main antagonist and the fun and improved gameplay. This game was better than TLOU in every single aspect except ending. I've never raged so much in a game while still enjoying it the best way i could. I also liked how the game just liked to toy with your feelings with killing Joel in the beginning and throwing those flashbacks at us. It just made you feel so much in the moment and makes you feel like you're an actual character experiencing whatever feelings Ellie is experiencing, no other game has ever done that in my opinion. It also just strengthed our motive to kill Abby and her friends .Overall i would still say that this game is an absolute masterpiece and still one of the best games ive ever played regarding the ending

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just bought the game for $10 (PSN Spring Sale). I haven’t picked up a controller since 2016, and have been busy with life so I thankfully missed all the hateful discourse surrounding this game. I did however overhear a couple of people at work mention something about Joel dying when the leaks came out and while I did find it sad, I was only mildly intrigued. I mean, it didn’t take a lot to arrive at the conclusion that someone from the first game must have killed him, and I guessed that it would be someone from the Fireflies. I was surprisingly close, too. I love TLOU, I love Joel and Ellie’s bond, although I am perhaps one of the few people who was very disappointed at his actions at the end, although I did understand why he did what he did. I wish his character hadn’t been written to end up being in theory, evil, because that meant the recovery of his “humanity” came at a very, very high cost. Anyway, I digress. I bought a PS4 just so I could play TLOU Remastered - I actually only have 2 other games, Witcher 3 and DA:I). Just as before, I took time from work these past few days just to play TLOU Part II, as I simply don’t have time. The graphics are amazing, MOST of the characters are compelling, but I think the game could have been a tad shorter. Maybe compress Ellie’s arc, and remove the early part of the first day of Abby’s. Because the game is so long, also getting so dark and violent, honestly if it weren’t for Lev, that courageous, unrelentingly kind boy, I wouldn’t have been able to keep playing without taking a break. The narrative does require a little bit of reflection - and I would even recommend some people to take a break after Ellie’s day 3. Take a break. Breathe. Go out for drinks. Hug your mom, dad, siblings, or whoever. Give your partner a kiss. Most people will need it, I’m sure. I am now on my second play through and I am slowly realizing that the story is much, much easier to understand the second time around. It’s as if Joel saying “I’d do it all over again” was some sort of sign. So yeah, this became longer than I had hoped, all I will say is buy the game (or rent it, or borrow a copy from a friend). And please, don’t let some random person, no matter how influential they may be, tell you whether you should play a game or not. It should be up to you. And if you have finished the game with an open mind and still end up not liking it, then that is perfectly fine! There are things that are objectively OK that you’re allowed to subjectively not like. For example, I recognize how a lot of people like MCU movies, Star Wars, etc. but I am just not a fan and while I will probably not rewatch any of those movies, I will also not say that the movies are BAD just because I didn’t like them. Anyway. Get this game. Play it. Meditate on it. You might just end up realizing that all the hate here is eerily one of the things that the game is trying to talk to you about. Expand
