Considering how this franchise has done its best to nurture a relationship between its two main characters, this trainwreck of a game is a blatant slap in the face of the fans. The beautiful graphics can't make a bad written game enjoyable. It's such a shame...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game destroys everything what made the first game great. The Story is awful and poor written. Why?
Joels Death is undeniably pathetic and rushed, he got killed by the dumbest way ever. A Golf Club, seriously? Joel, as a character we love, deserved much much better! After this I thought, alright, maybe it will get better, It got even worse. Abby was a character i didn't care about. Her Backstory is told in under 10 minutes or something and they expect us to like a character who killed Joel and with almost no backstory?NO!!!! THIS IS NOT HOW IT WORKS!!! Abby even gets better Gameplay than Ellie!! She gets all the best guns and more stuff than Ellie. We did not wait seven or more years to play AS F*CKING ABBY! We wanted Joel and Ellie back. Their Bond from the first Game was memorable and fantastic. In this game, it gets butchered in the first few hours AND in the worst way imaginable.
One thing I liked about Abby was the Gameplay. Towards the end I thought, alright fine, at least im going to kill Abby now. Guess what? THEY EVEN MANAGED TO RUIN ELLIE!!! Ellie lets Abby get away, And Abby's Abrupt Love Story with an Abrupt Sex Scene was a thing, I didn't care about. In Overall, the story is poorly written and if you liked the first game, you will hate this one because the memorable and fantastic Joel Ellie Bond gets butchered in this one.
But, This Game is absolutely beautiful, the Graphics are awesome. TLOU2 has simply the best Graphics I have ever seen. But Neil, the first Game did not get the Ratings because of the Graphics, it got the Ratings because of the fantastic Storytelling, ITS NOT ABOUT THE GRAPHICS!!! I would rather have bad Graphics and great Story than this. The Gameplay did not change much from the first game.
    Verdict:

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All right, folks, I'm not saying that this is the worst game ever just because of the death of Joel or because of Ellie transformed into a stupid selfish a**ole character, but I made an account here just to say that this game is literary one of the most disappointing games in the history of mankind because the events in the plot pop up out of nowhere and happen so randomly without any preparation and they make no sense. Repeat after me, they make no sense. Any moron can write a story that the plot happens as they dream without reasonable facts. The thing that makes a story legendary is that the writer is so talented that gives you logical reasons for any event they show, otherwise anyone, literary anyone can write a story. The true art is to find the acceptable reasons for what goes on in the story to make it feel real. On the other hand, the art is not just wishes of a psychopath mentally ill person like Neil Druckmann who just wants to convey his personal thought about life to the audience by using a masterpiece as his microphone, no matter how the first game was, no matter what actual theory the first game had, and no matter how the characters of the first game were developed and defined. As you see, he is using games to express his thoughts and ideologies about life; he doesn't care about the first game. He just sees it as a tool. That's what he did with the trailer. They showed us Joel in the trailer, they used Joel to hype us, to motivate us to buy the game, but in the actual game, Joel has no effective part in the game and dies at the very beginning as a stupid careless no experienced person.
So, I'm saying this aloud: I hope Naughty Dog removes Neil Druckmann from the company, otherwise, that's the company's end of awesomeness.

Gameplay: Same as the previous game, only no multiplayer. There are few new mechanics that are neat but overall it plays the same. However, much less puzzle solving, and more side quests with no impact to the main game whatsoever, rewards you with bits of resources which you'd care only if you're playing in the toughest difficulties.

Graphics: Up to par with everyone's expectations for games releasing this late in gen 8, most of the major areas are pleasantly detailed but you can still see issues with draw distance and texture pop up from time to time, quite immersion breaking.

Sound: Good ambient sound effects bundled with somber background music, there's no joyous tunes as the dev's already mentioned before release that the game takes on a much darker tone than the previous one. Still it feels they went way overboard in that direction.

I would not recommend this game even if it's in a $9.99 bargain bin. If you got the game for free you must burn it immediately and question the intention of the person who gave it to you.

You should buy the game if you...

Naughty Dog's most polarizing game yet was a real roller-coaster of emotions for me.
As is expected from this company, the game looks stunning and is immaculately polished. The gameplay feels smooth and adds a few layers to what we saw in the first game, but still sticks to its structure of "Find your way from point A to point B while dealing with enemies and gathering resources" with a few storyline sections sprinkled in with objects to interact with and snippets of conversations to have with your companions. They also took the lessons they learned from "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy" and added quite a few large open areas to explore filled with loads of optional collectibles, puzzles and story tidbits. Funnily enough, the game also has set pieces on par with the Uncharted series, despite this game's subtler storytelling.

Speaking of which... One of the best elements of Naughty Dog's games are their stories, and The Last of Us had their best story to date. In Part 2 the team made some very risky choices which clearly haven't gone down well with many fans.
The game's main theme is the endless cycle of violence the main characters find themselves in and how hard it is for them to break out of. Sadly, this is obvious from very early on in the game, meaning at least the first half of the plot becomes extremely predictable (and at some specific moments, strangely anticlimactic). Then the game throws a twist at us clearly meant to make us empathise with a particular character, and though at first it felt jarring, they did eventually manage to sell me on the idea.
It's a strange feeling, knowing that your characters are making bad decisions and forcing you to go along with them, knowing the best thing you could do for these people is to stop playing. Mashing the "attack" button and thinking "I don't want to do this... Stop making me do this." It's a feeling few games have given me and yet this game took it to the limit. Is that good? It didn't feel good. Maybe that was the point, but if so... is it an experience I want to have? As the credits rolled I was satisfied with how the story played out overall, but I did feel conflicted in many ways. It was probably a few hours too long and could've done with some additional editing. The gameplay loop also became repetitive hours before it was done. That being said, I applaud Naughty Dog for taking risks, even if they didn't all work out too well.

The story and dialogue from Part 1 was the main driver and attractor, Part 2 however, leaves much to be desired. Felt like there were political/social themes being forced into the narrative this time around and it felt so unnatural. One of the main characters has a physique that would just be near impossible to maintain given the world's conditions. Multiple new characters, uninteresting and under developed.

That is, because I believe truly masterful crafted arts is going to piss people off by it’s nature. It creates discussion, discomfort even. It’s a kind of “breaking the rules”, shaking up the established, creating something new. And TLOU2 surely isn’t something, that is made to make people happy, or to bring them joy or even “entertain” them. Which is what most games try to achieve: that positive loop of challenges and achievements, that flow, where you feel empowered and that world, where the rules are easy and you are on the good guys side fighting evil.

TLOU2 is really more than that, because it takes you on an extreme emotional journey of violence, hate and trauma and you as a player will suffer through it. It’s nothing I would recommend someone with a mental health issue and I would actually like to see a trigger warning for the game. The reason why I’m almost disappointed by the very negative reviews is, that most of these people really don’t understand, what they are actually feeling. They do not understand, that this game made them feel so utterly furious and heartbroken, that they couldn’t cope with it. And instead of embracing a game so powerful, that it creates real world emotional pain, they try to marginalise it. I think it is even understandable, that people hate something, that is masterfully designed to make you feel so much sorrow and pain, but this is also, what makes it so exceptional.

There is only once in a while a piece of art, that is as strong, bold and intense as TLOU2 and I don’t want people to miss it, because of immaturity.

The game's story is really about the endless circle of violence due to a ''revenge vendetta''. I believe the aim is to show the destructiveness and truly ugly nature when one goes down such a path.
Sadly, the game actually fails to deliver that goal in a meaningful way and I'll explain why.

At the start, it tries to anger the player by using a beloved character like Joel as the catalyst that should anger you enough and put you in the mindset of seeking revenge. It's the reason his death is so demeaning and horrible, otherwise if he had a heroic end you'd feel sad but not really pissed off and I get that. The real problem is what comes after and how it's handled. Instead of the game taking you through a trip of violence and allow you to make hard choices at the end of grizzly violent encounters that has a chance to shift your ''revenge at all costs mindset'', it takes a rigid linear approach. It doesn't provide opportunities to the player to test and see if your mindset shifts. For example this is something the Witcher 3 did so excellently where despite what you thought was the right course and good intention, you ended up with a less clear cut result making you question your choices. Instead of short, violent and shocking encounters that have deep impact (because the game is so over-bloated), that violence loses it's shock value and becomes casual which works against what they're trying to achieve. Even when they're trying to 'humanise' Ellie's adversaries, it's done in a wrong way that feels contrived rather than letting you experience it whilst playing as Ellie. Instead they put you right in the boots of her adversary which doesn't work well.

In the end, instead of building an experience that let's you question this cycle of violence and built up a culminating moment where you get to choose whether you end it by letting the ' main adversary' live or complete your revenge by killing her and continuing that circle...it chooses for you. This is the ultimate failure where turning the game into a preaching session instead of a lesson at the end of which you decide what to take away from it. This falls short of the excellent ending of the first game which allowed the player to walk away with their own interpretation of weather Joel was right or wrong.

Sure, the graphics are very good and the animations amazing, but the core mechanics and gameplay are not certainly not engaging enough for the length of time you're required to use them to finish the story. The game is of course technically accomplished and very polished which is not something we're used to as much these days.

Ultimately, it's not really the type of story that they chose to tell, nor the killing of one of the most beloved characters in gaming (very much inspired by Glen's end in The walking dead), but rather their failure to provide a similarly meaningful payoff and satisfaction for the audience after such a shock move. In the end it feels like a very shallow, uninspiring revenge story.

As for the game itself... it's bad. It doesn't respect your intelligence, it doesn't respect the original game, it doesn't even respect itself. All good storytelling was thrown out the window in favor of pushing the "woke" agenda and coddling the directors ego. The gameplay can still be fun, it's basically more of the same that you'd expect from the first game, but the writers obvious disdain for fans of the original game make it an unbearable experience for anyone who once loved it.

The Last of Us 2 was probably the most disappointing game I've ever played to this day. The gameplay and graphics are really good but you have to understand this is a sequel, not a new IP. The story of this game is absolutely disgusting and stupid which disrespects the previous game in so many ways. I'm definitely going to return the game and I really can't recommend it to anyone.

Very strange to see this game get review bombed so vehemently. There’s a clear lack of objectivity by tens of thousands of people leaving a review here, and clearly a fair few of those haven’t even touched the game.

Spectacular graphics, refined gameplay and an emotionally driven story that makes this yet another fantastic addition to Naughty Dogs now growing list of classics.

The two issues I have story-wise do relate to some of the decisions made. For me, what makes The Last of Us different from usual survival horror/apocalypse type games is that relationship between Joel and Ellie. The Last of Us IS that relationship more than the world itself and is at the very core of what makes the first game special. If you remove one of those elements then you risk falling back in to just another game, albeit a high level one.

The second issue is the trope of revenge. While naturally you would expect the people closest to Joel to want redemption, the game prides itself on being grounded and it would be hard to accept that in real life, in such a horrendous world, you would leave the sanctity of Jackson to travel hundreds of miles in to an absolute fortress to try and find one person. It’s not a dealbreaker but it does take away from that grounded atmosphere it tries to create.

That being said, I’m more than happy to be an observer of Druckmann’s story, given that he is the creator, much like I would he reading any novel. I admire the fact that they didn’t rest on their laurels and pay loads of fan service to the game, purely to please the (seemingly aggressive) dedicated fan base to this franchise. I want to play a linear story game to be told a story, not to cross off a checklist of things I wanted to see in the game. Generation defining game, not quite at the level of the first game, but the expectations for this sequel were so high that was always going to be a challenge.

It’s a shame that there is an ever present immature streak among a lot of gamers that can’t be objective enough to form an opinion on this game without jumping on a bandwagon.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us Part. 2 can be classified as one of the biggest disasters in narratives of a game of this generation, because what was seen in the campaign was a construction of a revenge that not even, teen Disney films can be as bad as and the saddest this is how Neil Druckmann treated one of the most iconic characters in the game, Joel, who literally prostitutes himself for a coffee, YES, YOU DID NOT READ WRONG, A COFFEE. The guy who saves Ellie's skin several times in the first game, which is no longer everything the media says, is treated like a totally disposable character, an irrelevant NPC.

As for the gameplay, little changes in relation to the first game, with the addition of the dodge, but the movement is totally outdated for what we see today, perhaps the only positive point is the graphic look of the game which is beautiful and the soundtrack that it's acceptable, but nothing flawless, but it ends there. The technical part is totally flawed, with several bugs that can hinder gameplay, having to restart to the control point for the game to return to normal and I do not understand how the so-called "specialized media" in part of the world is not judicious with games from Naughty Dog, giving the impression of a perfect game before user reviews, totally encouraging the purchase of the game.

But the worst of it all is the story, that in addition to disrespecting Joel, the plot is based on a persecution of the antagonist of the game (Abby) that you play with her and try to humanize her, it is as if they tried to humanize the Joker in a the Batman game, and Abby who is more masculine than the male characters in the game, the LGBT relationship between Ellie and Dina is the least important, because in the Left Behind DLC her sexual orientation has already been shown, which is positive in the case of a created character (different from the militancy that tries to push classic characters to please a noisy minority), the ending then is disastrous, because in addition to the bad story built on the concept of revenge, the main character throws everything out of the effort made during the campaign.

Congratulations Neil Duckmann, you destroyed a good game by cheap ideological leafleting, you may have liked the militancy that exists within the media, but not those who like the game that is the majority as shown by the users' ratings.

And a message to gamer journalists, you’re not fooling anyone else. TLOU Part. 2 goes a long way from being a perfect game, as there are flaws that any game has, but the impression they tried to make is a perfect game, a masterpiece, which is not really the case and this should be exposed for those who want to buy the game.

The notes are lowered from USERS WHO PLAYED THE GAME, which contrasts what journalists tried to pass on to consumers with a falsely perfect game.

And to users who play FACT, value their money in this difficult time that we live in, which is the pandemic of COVID-19, wait for Ghost Of Tshushima that seems to have potential, Cyperpunk 2077 and even the Remake of the first Mafia. Steam user reviews are more true than that of people who pass through a university, graduate, to lie to consumers.

And to think that if Amy Hennig still had Naughty Dog, Uncharted and and The Last Of Us would have well-constructed stories for those who don't know, Hennig had a hand in TLOU, but the atmosphere was so heavy inside the studio that thanks to Anita Sarkeesian, who Hennig was forced to ask to leave and was not credited for the work. In fact, I don't even know if he had credit for certain, Druckman usurped her work, just as he had already done with Uncharted.

Amy Hennig is only responsible for building the Uncharted universe and even with all the recognition, Druckmann wanted changes to his style and his style is there, making a game with a narrative worse than teen films.

Journalist who chooses what news to give IS NOT JOURNALIST, IS ADVERTISER.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man, what the actual **** I have been sooo mf hyped for this game. Trusted Naughty Dog with my soul. But now I understand how bad of a company and studio they are. Manipulating reviews, controlling advertising, false advertising in their trailers like we would not notice. They created the masterpiece that we know as the last of us 1. A game where we grew in love with the characters. Learned to appreciate their thoughts and emotions. Once we heard of a sequel everyone including myself became so hyped wanting for more of the characters we loved, a satisfaction to see where the journey of our favorite characters would continue. BUT NO WE WERE ALL WRONG. Naughty dog took this as a step to introduce politics and their stupid agenda they seem to idolize so much. We don’t care if the character is a girl, or a lesbian, or this or that. As long as it makes sense to the plot and is not trying to shove it down our throats then is fine. This game introduces a diverse cast of characters forcefully. Tries to makes us erase our memories about everything and everyone we loved in the last of us 1. Erase everything completely. As soon as the game starts they kill of one of the characters we love in the most horrendous possible way. And then whole game then process to show events that want to make us hate said character. Oh did I forget to say that they make you play as the character that destroys what we love so much. There aren’t enough words to describe how bad the writing and the plot is. Is just so barebones and in the end remember this words “IT WAS ALL FOR NOTHING”. Graphics are great, amazing in fact. And gameplay is fun I guess, a little to gory, guess naughty dog is a bunch of fckng psychopaths that get hard on this. The shooting just sucks pretty hard. All in all I wouldn’t recommend this game to anyone that loved the foundation of what the last of us 1 was. Expand

I have made an account just to give my thoughts about the game and I promise I am 100% genuine. I was a huge fan of the first installment and have waited for 7 years almost to play the sequel.

    Slight Spoilers Warning.
I cannot believe that the writer of TLOU and TLOU2 are the same. The difference in quality and brilliance is just too drastic. If anything TLOU2 feels like a badly written fan fiction. The characters ironically are acting way out of character and are not likeable either. Due to the writing you care so little about the new characters Naughty dog, or specifically Neil tries to shove down your throat. It fails miserably to antagonize the original protagonists in a way that the player is left frustrated and disappointed.

The game kills one of the most relatable protagonists in gaming in the first 2-3 hours of the game and I would love to say it does it in a very nicely written way but it just doesn't. The player is left frowning when the event occurs because it feels rushed, weird and frankly just awkard. After that you embark on a revenge quest which also is horribly written and the new protagonist feels incredibly unrelateable and a chore to play. You constantly miss the bond between Ellie and Joel which we loved in the first game and wished the game would've given you more post time skip Ellie and Joel gameplay, but that option was stupidly taken away in the first 2 hours.

    2nd
Since when did the player care about the protagonists sexuality? The sequel tosses away everything what made the first game a joy to experience and replaces it with Neil Druckmanns personal agenda which in my opinion is a total no go. Can we please keep politics out of game and make games have people come together instead of dividing? Noone wants to play as Abby, noone cares about Dina. We wanted Joel and Ellie and not some badly written lesbian romance fan fiction.

My final verdict? Just pretend Last of Us ended with the first. I can put my money on the fact that Neil did not write Last of Us 1, the difference in direction and quality is just too drastic.

    Also,

consider the fact that Naughty Dog under Neil made 70% of their talented; original developers quit. Let that sink in. Most of the people who worked on games that made Naughty dog games exceptional are no longer part of it. Neil never addressed the overworking, salary-witholding of their staff and pretended everything was roses which I found incredibly arrogant as he clearly thinks that it's not worth discussing or giving a statement about, which in actuality is. Naughty dog is no longer the game studio we all used to love, it has been hijacked by people with an obvious agenda who try to force their ideoligy down your throat.

If you believe games aren't art like movies or books and just play games for pretty colors then this game will be fine for you.

I believe they are art and the story can and should be a measure of their worth. The first Last of us was played because the story was about finding purpose after the end of the world, after you have lost everything to live for. To keep going and finding new purpose to live and survive, an old man losing his daughter to find another. About a girl with survivors guilt learning to live with it and find purpose in her life, a reason why she survived. It was a masterpiece that sadly will not be followed up, that story is over.

What this game tries to do is say **** you, all that character building, means nothing, we got new **** Joel is now a moron that isn't cautious with new people at all, when that is the entire first game's premise, he doesn't trust anyone, but not now. Ellie is now a murder hobo, except at the last second she has mercy for the only purpose because Druckman wants to use Abby as the main character for the third installment of the series, which at this point I hope doesn't happen.

Abby's character development completely revolves around being another murder hobo, she has no arch. She begins as a murder hobo, and ends as a murder hobo that magically got lucky that Ellie doesn't kill her. There will never be a connection to this character and if the third part is actually made, they will have to lie to the audience that it isn't about her in order to sell it.

What will drive you more crazy is that they tease you the game you actually wanted to play with 30 min long flash backs a few times, but 90% of the game isn't what you wanted.

I expected more knowledge about the virus, zombies, the pandemic of humans disappeared, the reason of ellies immunity and making a vaccine. But there is no mention about that anywhere. Its a big female drama. Transgender and female problems were tried to squeeze into a zombie apocoplyse, which wouldn't even matter for the story. The topic of revenge and violence has influenced the writers to much, that they ruined it for the player. Its not new, not fresh, it's the present picture of movies and series. It's sad they had to kill the franchise with that.
    Graphics: 10/10, looks like a PS5 game
Gameplay: To much looting, but great combat improvment with dodges. Realistic reaction, AI is quite good, even as comrade.
Sound: Super nice sound on the point. Maybe to quiet at some places, where nothing happens

Overall gameplay, graphics and sound make the most out of this game. Many people worked on this and without the story, this is top game. Most annoying for me, they ignore the apocoplyse story completley.

Graphics and Sound excellent, as always. The lore... hours and hours that builds nothing, kills a lot and tries to surprise the player with "first game shocking moments x500" and nothing more. Don't care about the feminist/gender thing, doesn't bother me at all, the game's story is worse than the first one and nothing will change this.

Oh boy. There is so much unnecessary unfitting brutality in this game I do not even have words for. It is like we get it. If you love Joel and Ellie like me and play this game because it is more a cinematic experience than a game than you will hate how their story unfolds in this one. I do not care about politics but I hate how in your face and forced they are in this game. This game isOh boy. I do not care about politics but I hate how in your face and forced they are in this game. This game is missing the soul the first one had and it is so bad it taints the first game. Play it yourself you will see. You can fight it all you want you can make excuse after excuse and pander all along, but this game from a storytelling perspective is the worst sequel in any entertainment stage I have ever had to witness. This game get a 0 because it ruined not only itself but the masterpiece that was the first. Expand

O gameplay e gráficos são ótimos, mas a história é ruim.
Os produtores se esforçaram para fazer com que o jogador goste de personagens nada carismáticos.

Just because a main character or characters are killed and stir emotions, does not make a game great. Weak writing

Clunky. Slow. Jump mechanics are appalling. Story mediocre at best. Why? Remove Neil from the studio.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
