This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like people who played this just couldn't get over the fact Abby killed Joel. I never liked that Joel chose Ellie over the human race so I totally understood Abby's rage but she kept it in check and just killed the guy she wanted to kill. Ellie on the other hand went after anyone and everyone. IMO Ellie was the most bloodthirsty character in the game. My wife and I really liked the story. It was gut wrenching at almost every turn but we got the motivations behind both Ellie and Abby.

I think Abby's story line was lost on many just because they couldn't get over what she did which, if you ask me, plays right into NaughtyDogs theme. Rather than growing to understand someone and learning to forgive(Ellie even says she understands why Abby did it) some players feel they cannot and just let the cycle of hate fester on within themselves. I for one think people gave this game an unfair chance. It was quite unique from anything I've played in a long time. While it was extremely brutal and gut wrenching at times I think they did their job well. 9 outta 10 from me.

Gamer friends, I don't understand the hatred that this game has suffered, the developers have worked hard on this work. The story is the main asset of the game along with the art direction. I can understand that the end of the story disappoints some people, but the game is for me the future game of the year 2020

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I have finished the entirety of the game now, and had a day to digest the story, so this isn't a knee jerk review.

Firstly, I'd like to start by saying that the first Last of Us game, is quite literally the only game I would ever give a perfect and full 10/10 score to. Anything else is just edging a 10, where as that game filled the 10 to almost being an 11. So I was clearly counting down the days to the sequel, quite literally in fact for the week leading up to it's release. I'd avoided the leaks, didn't read articles and only watched a few of the trailers. I knew without a doubt I would love this game, it was a done deal, even before playing it. Then 2 hours into the game, that was no longer the case.
Don't get me wrong the visuals, sound and atmosphere of the game, the controls, animations, everything is complete perfection......that is, except for the story, the characters, and the writing. The very thing that made the first game such a huge, emotional, perfect experience. It's just not here, the story of part 2 plays out more like a bad fan fiction than a realistic depiction of anything the characters would do. Its not just badly done, it's truly awful, and the only reason this game gets a score of 4 is due to the gameplay, visuals and audio. I quite honestly can't believe I'm giving this game such a low score. I can't comprehend how they got it all so very wrong.
This isn't even a review bomb, this is my genuin score after putting around 50 hours into the game. I explored every building, every dialogue prompt, every room, every draw, trying to experience everything possible that I could, but none of that can make up for the story. THAT WAS THE ONLY THING THEY HAD TO GET RIGHT!

Graphicly it's almost unbelievable to thing it's running on a PS4, it looks like a late stage PS5 game, no exageration. It's like watching a movie as it's so realistic, the lighting is astounding, the textures are so sharpe and real looking, especially on the PS4 Pro. and then there is the audio, man, the audio is like nothing I've heard before. It's better than movie quality as there is more clarity, it's like getting a speaker upgrade, every little crack of twigs, shuffle of feet on muddy ground, the wind in the trees, and the clickers! well, they somehow sound so much more terrifying than in the first game. Gunshots are improved too, you feel like a gun is going off in the room with you, the loud punchy bang, the whiz of shots flying around you, the music adding so much atmosphere, elevating your heart, it's amazing, genuinely.......But the entire story, characters all acting differently than they did in the first game, what feels like forced diversity just jammed in there, and I have no idea with diversity, I actually welcome it, but this feels like it's been forced into the story for the sake of it. Story beats with no reason being patched in to cover up other plot holes. the whole thing is such a mess. They could have done so much more with it. Naughty dog, Rockstar Games and CD Projekt Red, where my 3 most trusted game companies, after playing Uncharted 4, I fully trusted them with this, so much so that I made only my second Pre order ever, my first being Red Dead 2.

Right now I'm grieving for the loss of a great company, I don't see them recovering from this. Im grieving for all the characters of this world, both the ones who dies and the ones who lived. The only character I wanted to die, actually survived!
I'd go as far as saying that this almost makes the first game pointless (a game I might add, I've played though 10 times at least) to the point that I might never play it again.

I pray that Naughty Dog right this wrong with a patch, change certain things, they could recover this, but corporate greed will more likely mean that this will be written off as a fail and dropped for good.

This is now my biggest gaming regret, and will be the last game I ever pre order.

The deception of replacing Joel into sections where it was actually Jesse, and making it seem like you'd play as Joel and Ellie in the main story, that's poor form from Naughty Dog, We have been miss sold to, and I will be requesting a refund due to being deceived in the marketing material.

I have not finished it yet but I am not really enjoying the story anymore as it is simply too far away from my personal reality which means: I simply can't relate and don't even want to. Providing a basis for a very questionable woke ideology seems more important than good story-telling. So: Was it really necessary? Holy **** . Thank you Naughtydog for this piece of garbage.

The nuance of mechanics, graphics, audio, creative direction is like nothing I have seen in video game before and you can practically play this game as smoothly as a movie. It truly feels like a next generation title. The story is complex (much more so than the original which may surprise most) and difficult which i don't mean to sound as if its a bad thing because it's not. But it's where this games back lash has come from. The last of us 2's story is a true gritty piece of art teeming with dark beauty and harrowing pain. Play it with an open mind, and do not let your personal views cloud the experience of this game. Naughty dog are not trying to push a feminist agenda like the community is making them out to be. This has been blown out of proportion and echo chambered through the community in times of unprecedented social and political tension. Expand

The gameplay at the level of the first part, not some revelations or conceptually new ideas in it. The plot is not so simple. As it was written earlier, the plot of the first part is a mishmash of cliches, stamps and “stolen” ideas, and it would be better if the plot of the second part was the same. What the plot turned into is hard to say without the use of obscene curses. And we are not talking about those things on which the Internet raged for at least half a year. My entryway neighbor is a representative of the LGBT community, by the way I played the second part in her apartment, because I don’t have a PS4, but she has one. And even she, watching my play, during the cut-scenes, sat with the expression of Jackie Chan from that meme. As a result, for me personally, the process of the game “The Last of Us part 2” was similar to the process of eating a lean sandwich. Outwardly, it looks beautiful (graphics), it tastes tasteless (gameplay) and at the same time, in between biting off another piece, they poke a sharp stick in your stomach (plot). we loved the first game for the story, for the characters. they were flawed but we could relate. in many ways they were the everyman/woman. whether or not you agreed with the choice at the end (I did agree. the odds of them just killing her and getting nothing from it were far higher than any chance of success. the corona virus is a far less complex thing and they have currently trained scientists in many top labs over the country struggling with it.. and somehow this game wants you to believe you did wrong rescuing her when all they had were a few washed up surgeons and a dirty dilapitated hospital to work with? they were never going to win that. but that sets in motion this new game where apparently they were so bad and so tainted by that choice that they deserved to be hunted down and killed and they're so bad you don't even get to play as them for the most of the game. yeah that doesn't fly with me. I don't need stuff rubbed in my face. I don't need to be told i'm bad and the things I like are bad. I want a good game play experience with a solid GOOD story. this is just not it. this is shock value for the sake of it really and the big moral code that this dev thinks he has isn't all that. middle aged edgelord is edgy. we get it. what a bore.

Story/characters: That's the most important aspect in a The Last of Us game, and they dropped the ball really hard here. This game disrepects not only the original fans, but every single character previously stablished. It sacrifices its own story to tick off as many boxes as possible in the character diversity checklist. It's not only cheap, it's disgraceful.
There's a point in the game where an NPC Neil Druckman literally spits on Joel's face, perfectly illustrating what this game is all about: him spitting in the face of everything we liked about the series . And that's just what this terrible director does to the fans, gives us a spit in the face. I am only grateful the Uncharted franchise ended before Naughty Dog could shred it to pieces, like it did in The Last of Us part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game about 5 minutes ago and I'm having very complicated feelings. The developers worked really hard to make the game and the graphics are really beautiful. Ellie's story, except the ending, made sense to me. However, I really dislike the fact that I had to play Abby's story for so many hours. Abby killed Joel without mercy, I'm having trouble understanding why Ellie spared her life at the end. I feel bad for the developers. To the story writers: if you kill Joel to move the story forward, at least let us have the revenge moment. Joel killed everyone to save his girl, and we just get to watch Abby get away? Whoever wrote the story, you should find another job. And yeah, you did hurt my feelings as a tlou fan.

You won't believe how many times I killed Abby in the game. I literally did it 20+ time when Abby was in the theater fight Ellie. I should have left the game by then if I knew this ending was gonna be this.

I told everyone this game was amazing. Now I have changed my mind. What a terrible ending. Ruined the whole fukin game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game… It managed to broke me and at the same time give reasons to live. I literally cried in the end because I really love Ellie and Joel and it hurts to see what happened to them. Their relationship meant so much to me and now they are just gone… I understand why Joel did what he did in part 1. Ellie was all he had, so he couldn't lost her like he lost Sarah. So he saved her. Killed for that. But you know what? I don't care. Because... I would do exactly the same thing. A little girl was alive. Even if it was just for a few years, she was happy. So for me, it was all worth it.
I wanted Abby to be dead. But then Ellie would lost herself and I don’t want that for her. Joel wouldn’t want that for her. He always protected her from this cruel world and wanted her to stay that happy sarcastic kid. She gave him a light that he thought was gone forever. She gave that light to me, I learnt to enjoy small things, just to be happy with what I have. Cause one day it may just not be here anymore.
TLoU showed me how brutal people can be. And how they can change. Once, at the end of the fight, there was one women left unarmed. She begged for mercy. But i killed her. I knew that if I let her live, she would shoot me in the back. Just one death of hundreds, but it really got me. It felt real. Like I really killed someone. At that moment I realised that people in that world don’t always want to be cruel. It’s like “kill or be killed”, you just don’t really have a choice. I will never forgive Abby, but I understand why she did what she did. So as I understand Ellie. She couldn’t let it go. She knew that everything is gone too far, but just couldn’t stop. And I’m happy that, eventually, she could.
This is amazing game. I’ve never experienced anything like that. After part 2 I replayed the first game and all those moments with Joel, every their dialogue, it felt so nice seeing them together again, but also sad, cause I know how it’s gonna end…These games taught me to appreciate life and see the light even if I feel lost and empty in this **** dark around. So thanks, Naughty Dog, for giving me that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a big fan of The Last of Us. The story, the atmosphere, the character. I love everything inside. But the sequel, wha to say... it’s a disgrace to the previous fan.

Lets talk about the gameplay first. Compare to the first one, it definitely improved much better. You can tell the difference if you played the first game. The stealth was not much improved but when in combat, the fight was intense. The gun customizations are satisfying to watch. The AI was much smarter (I guess?) and harder. You have to play smart to overcome it. The movement control was still little hard to control.

For graphics details, naughty dog just been naughty dog. The graphics was very details to hard to ignore. Everything you see can be used for background. Now, the main point - Story. The reason why I was in love the Last of Us is not only the gameplay, also the story. At first, I was not really interested in the game. But when I get my hands on the copy., the story telling, the settings and characters are convincing me why this game won the game of the year.

So when I heard the sequel comes out, I pre ordered the game and thought this will be another masterpiece. It was until I heard the leaks. At first I was thinking they aren’t even true or just a part of it. So I decided to ignore them and have to experience the game myself.

When I get the game and played for 2 hours, I... I really... what the f? Who wrote this stuff? Someone who was high on drug or getting drunk? Let me get this right, Joel was supposed to be a veteran survivors, so does his brother Tommy. They all are well-experienced and they are always on high alert, especially strangers. So you telling they told their names to nobody and followed a group of them into small room without suspicious. And they introduced themselves causally. Really? If you telling me the ways they acted like that because they were relaxing peaceful days for too long or getting old age. I can say it to you, what the **** It’s like they are totally different person from the first one.

The second, new characters Abby. I have no objection of introducing another playable characters. But this character was totally unlovable. You telling I have to play this character to know why she killed Joel and fight back the main character Ellie!???? Why!? Why in the hell you have to play as the one you wanted to kill. And main characters lost to her? I just dont get it. Why tho?

Third, I have to clear it for myself. I don’t deny any facts of LGBT inside the game. But the way they present it are way uncomfortable than real life. I literally have to skip those cutscenes or pause the game.

Fourth, this is a revenge story right? You played as Ellie. You killed every last of your enemy allias and you let your revenge target go away????????? What the **** It’s like John Wick killed every single one of his enemy and let go the only one who killed his dog? What the ****?

Fifth, the only thing I cant really stand for. Ending, after Elie gave up her revenge and go back to Jackson. All of her people she cared were gone and left. Leaving only her alone and barely to play the guitar, nowhere to go or dont know what to do anymore. This is even worse than Joel ending.

Overall, the gameplay, the graphics, the voice act, the cutscenes, all ruined by a bad story telling. I have no idea what the hell is the writer thinking about. If I was to compare some of the movies or series, It’s like watching one of the anime I watched, Kemono Friends S2. **** plot.

Although the game is very sad and shocking, it makes many people angry and annoyed, but it does not affect me. The determination to buy the game is because the plot is already like that. The game itself is still very good. So even though it’s sad to learn about Joel through the drama, it still looks similar, but I still want to buy it because he is the type of game I like and hate him because the plot does not meet the public’s requirements? Spoilers follow.

Joel's decision, which I thought was ambiguous in the first game, has been retroactively condemned and deemed "the wrong thing to do." Nonsense, if anything his actions were absolutely correct even if he hated Ellie.

The characters are shallow, cardboard cutouts and the game is preachy. The advertisements were outright misleading, to the point that people should be able to demand a refund. Abby is a horrible character, and one you are forced to spare after being forced to play her and watch her ruin everything for the characters you actually enjoy.

Adiós The Last Of Us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and as a woman, I must say that this game so obviously intended to push a political agenda that only succeeded in leaving me with a sour taste in my mouth and an emptiness in my soul. The first Last of Us was a masterpiece. You bond with Joel, a broken man who makes the hard decisions in this apocalypse, which are oftentimes selfish in nature. You then get to watch as he slowly opens his heart to Ellie, a young girl who represents the last hope for humanity and who obviously values life. You witness their worlds collide and how they shape one another to achieve that dynamic duo that we as fans adored and held dear to our hearts. By the end of the game, you question Joel's actions, and although saving Ellie was selfish, it made sense. The world had already taken his biological daughter away from him, so he took the world's last hope away in return. It was a brutal conclusion, but it was satisfying because it was so relatable. He had come to love Ellie as his own daughter, so it made sense that he would do everything in his power to keep her by his side. The Last of Us Part II fails on all accounts in achieving this level of storytelling.

As far as graphics, sound, and all the mechanical pieces- yes, Part II surpasses the first game, because of just how visually stunning it is. It truly is a beautiful game, but that is where my praise ends. Story-wise, I can't even begin to explain all of the issues in this text box. The game tries to demonize Joel, and it is done in such a way that it is honestly laughable and a slap in the face to all fans who had adored the father-daughter bond that had developed in the first game. We recognize that he was never a hero, but everything he did in the end was out of love for Ellie. Which does not make him a good man necessarily, but it made him RELATABLE. Their bond made the Last of Us what it was, and that bond is erased entirely within the first two hours of Part II gameplay in the most violent, disgusting and demeaning way possible. We all expected Joel to die in this game, but the way that it was done was so disrespectful to the entire fanbase that the creators should not be shocked at this backlash. He was a survivor with two decades worth of experience, and he just allows himself to be surrounded in an unknown location? The man who spotted an ambush a mile away and hit a hunter with his truck? The man who refused to give his name upon first meeting Sam and Henry just says, "Hi, I'm Joel" to strangers? This death scene was done purely for shock value and out of laziness. And then they have the audacity to even spit on his corpse. Not only that, but then we are forced to play as the woman (Abby), who had bashed his skull in, for 10+ hours of the game. A section that uses the most basic of psychological tactics to manipulate you to try and sympathize with her to understand her perspective, and it fails- miserably. The entire game tries to paint Abby as this saint who was wronged by the evil Joel, and then tries to twist Ellie's character to make her as unlikeable as possible. You pet puppies with Abby, and then kill dogs with Ellie. You save children with Abby, and kill pregnant women with Ellie. It's so obvious what the creators were trying to pull and it does not work.

Abby gets her revenge by killing Joel, yet she gets a happy ending by running away to an island with her newfound little brother. Ellie ends the cycle of revenge by sparing Abby, but has lost everything and her fear from the first game has come to fruition. She is all alone. Joel is dead, her friends are dead, Tommy hates her, Jackson is against her, Dina (her love interest) abandons her with the baby, and on top of it all- Abby bit off her fingers, so she can't even play guitar. The last connection she has to Joel. The whole "revenge is bad" and "look, violence gets you nowhere" is being preached at every corner and the message does not succeed because our little girl is left with nothing in the end even though she was the one to "forgive".

Either way, it honestly makes NO sense for Ellie's character to spare Abby at the last minute. She cut down hundreds of people to get to the woman who took away the man who cared for her, only to back out because "oh yeah, forgiveness is better"? No. This is not profound. This is infuriating, and exhausting. This game is exhausting. Everything that made the first game superb is stripped away in Part II and it shows. It has turned into a game solely about inclusivity, representation, and a questionable form of women empowerment where all the men die- which leads to the raw nature of the apocalyptic world formed in the first game to morph into a political classroom with infected popping in every now and then. If they were going to do it, they should have at least been clever about it and integrated it into a beautiful story and not in this dumpster fire that attempts to evoke depression in every individual exposed to it.

the main problem of this game its story, it sucks it really really sucks, they killed a beloved character in the first 2 hours in a way that is laughable, this makes liking Abby almost imposible no matter what, she just killed such a beloved character from the fans that no matter what her story is, barley any one will like her, in order to not make this so long i will jump straight in to the ending where this game makes everything meaningless, the world of TloU its suppose to be cruel, cold and horrible Ellie was doing what she tough was right during the hole game, she and Tommy killed almost every single friend of Abby, witch makes her decision of of let her live completely stupid, the first game story was amazing, it didnt care what was the right choice for humanity, it didnt matter the life of those that wish to save others, it was a cruel and selfish act because thats just how the world of TloU is, to see Ellie falling into the path of vengance, of hate was going great, Ellie was starting to becoming a Cruel murderer that just wanted to take revenge for those who killed his "father" but in the end she lets Abby live for no reason this makes the entire game pointless, if Ellie woula killed Abby the story would be a lot much better, no, no just because "i hate abby" but because we woulda seen Ellie following the same path as Joel, killing Abby maybe it was not the right thing but she didnt care about that, she woulda transform just like Joel did in the first game, commit a selfish act just to feel better but in the end TloU just misses the mark, just missis the opportunity do deliver a cruel horrible story just like the first game and because of this the game fails

Neil Druckmann, you ruined this game.

The only + in this game is that i get to see Ellie and Joel again.

Everything else is bad beacuse the story is bad.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has the potential to be an 8 outta 10 or even a 10 out of 10 for me because the gameplay and animations are great the world and graphics are beautiful the sound and details and all the little things that went into this game is top notch. I loved the different zombies and enemies types and loved the just scares in this game but the only thing that killed it for me was the story. I did not mind that they killed Joel for shock value I like how the game had a dark tone and was gory it felt like a horror game. Which makes sense for this world that these characters have to live in. Having what happened to Joel makes sense for the revenge rampage Ellie then goes on in this game. I just wish they didn’t lie to us in the trailers making it out like we can play with Joel because I bought the game thinking I was going to get a different experience then what I got. I still would have possibly bought it if I knew what the game was actually gonna be like but for a lot of people they would not have the dynamic of Joel and Ellie was not there in this game and Abby and Lev dynamic definitely didn’t make up for the loss or feel the same way they did in the first game. That dynamic is why people loved the fist game in the first place and wanted to buy Part 2 because people wanted more of the Joel and Ellie duo and wanted to see where the story took these two. Also a lot of people did not like the fact that they were lied to about not having to kill dogs but in this game you are forced to which I don’t mind it doesn’t bother me but I can see how it bothers some people. I also did not like how we had to play 10 hours with Abby and where forced to sympathize with her character and understand why she did what she did to Joel when in the beginning of the game they made us absolutely hate her and her character. Maybe if they reconstructed the story and had all the Joel and Ellie flash backs and Abby’s flashbacks actually be apart of the story and happen in the beginning of the game we might have liked her character more and understood why she did what she did but no that’s not the story we got. I also didn’t like when we finally got done playing through with Abby we were forced to beat up and almost kill Ellie and Dina I didn’t like how Abby was such a cold hearted killer with no remorse and dealt with no side effects to her daily life and mental health I did like how Ellie had ptsd from what happened bc it makes sense. Going through what she had to go through and living in that world would be hard for anybody and I like how they did that they made Ellie feel more like an actual human. I also like how naughty dog tackled real like issues and topics with this game without getting to political the world is crazy enough and that’s why we play video games is to get away from that kinda stuff sometimes. Which brings me to the last part of this game that I did not like which was the ending. They should have just ended it with her on the farm with her new family trying to live and learn how to be herself again and get over the all of the things she has seen and gone through up until that point and maybe left us with a cliff hanger for the third game but no. They had Tommy show up who I thought was dead and guilt trip her into keeping her promise and going after Abby again. Which felt rushed And didn’t feel like was the original ending that was supposed to happen. I didn’t mind the Rattlers and I liked playing in Santa Barbara but I didn’t like how they caught Abby and Lev and that’s how Ellie finds her all weak and dying and that’s when you finally get to fight her. We have seen Ellie take down some big enemies but instead they have us fight Abby like this. It made it seem like Ellie could not beat Abby at full at strength and they knew this and it felt kinda disrespectful to her character. I loved the fight between the two at the end but the fact they just let her go made it feel like I wasted my time and killed all those people to get to Abby for nothing. Definitely super unfulfilling and unsatisfying ending for me and she still didn’t get Justice for Joel. She did not keep her promise to Tommy. Dina left her and now since Abby bit her two fingers off she can not even play the guitar which was one of the last things she could do to remember Joel by and just leaves the house and walks into the woods and that’s it. Terrible ending story wise in my opinion. I do feel like this is a game everyone should play but in my opinion just wait until it goes on sale or just borrow it from a friend. 6/10 Expand

Almost like last Jedi but the difference is this clearly had a lot more work am behind in my opinion and that shows in every frame. Not a 10/10 for me cause of pacing and story structure issues but it does justice to the first. This is a very solid 9/10 in my book. One of my new favorites and my current GOTY. Expand

Greatest game of all time. Excellent gameplay, audio, lighting, environment, story, soundtrack, etc. Was very angry in the beginning (which the game does to you intentionally), and then my emotions constantly switched between depression, sadness, anger, and happiness throughout. If they really wanted to shove abby down the gamers throats they should have given the option to kill her or spare her and made a more detailed ending. Avoid spending your hard earned money for what becomes a pointless and frustrating game in the end. If there is a next installment, and i think what they are going to make also removing ellie or making the game most cringeworthy, I will ignore it and just forget the fact that this franchise even existed. I absolutely loved the first game. One of the best games ever made. However, this sequel is one of the worst games I ever played. Terrible story and mediocre gameplay. It is way too long, and says almost nothing. Just about every character is unlikable. I can't think of a single redeeming quality about this game.

(English is not my first language) I bought this game just for the plot...because the gameplay is boring, after 8 years the same old **** Still, back then the gameplay wasn't that great....0 improvement on the AI, they just copy-paste Ellie's code from the first game. Talking about the animations probably the best I have ever seen in a video game. However, I don't play games to watch 6 hours of cutscenes with cool animations, you know there is something called movies/ tv-shows for that. The plot is soo pathetic(I don't care about Joel's death or Abby super muscles)... complete sequences of random dramatic events just to show how bad the revenge is...Oh yeah I know it's revenge and violence circle, with Abby and Ellie trapped in it...OMG, it's soo original, I have never read or played a game with revenge circle as plot(sarcasm). I think this plot is perfect for people with low IQ, probably they have never used their brain or read a book in their life.., and playing a game with this type fo plot make them feel somehow intellectuals. Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
