The jogability got better, with more resources, more stealth, and more challenging, like the dogs making this harder. The story made me get emotional some times. I just get annoyed with play so much with Abby, but after thinking about i got why she was important. The end made me get reflective, after finish i just thought a lot about it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has a very bad narrative, characters and silly cutscense, regardless the gameplay and the enviroment are amazing and perferctly designed but Niel has ruined the entire game because of the following: 1- feminisms: like the most important thing to girls is to be as strong as men.
2- sexuality: It is not an important thing to know the sexuality of the characters.
3- the ending is the worst ending you could have seen, Ellie has killed many people and killed a pregnant woman and in the other side Abby has trained and became like a man just to avenge for her father and she did what she wanted and the only threat to her is Ellie and neither of them killed the other.

The story on the other hand is what sadly brings this down from being on par with its predecessor. The last 12 hours are kind of a mess of entangled narratives that leads up to something that could have been such a climatic ending but sadly doesn’t. Still, what an emotional rollercoaster. The game is a marvel, struggling with some pacing and time jumping narrative decisions but still is definitely worth a play through. However mad one might be about the early spoilers that leaked. Naughty Dog and company should be proud of the game they developed. Of course, anyone is bound to have negative thoughts about the game for various reasons. Yet, after completing the game once after roughly 30 hours of true gameplay time, I am writing my first review for a game that has great moments, but also flaws like any other game. i will breakdown this review into brief sections covering the story, graphics, gameplay and character development.

    Story (9/10)
Without getting into story specifics (no spoilers here outside one character reveal), players take control of Ellie as she reworks herself after a tragic event that sets off an adventure rooted in hate and vengeance. Friends join her on this quest fraught with danger around every corner in search of the culprits that triggered this adventure in the first place. The player suffers and feels through grueling sequences that put the player in positions that they otherwise would not want to make. In a world nearly 30 years later that is continuing to evolve from the events of the first part, hard decisions are a part of the story and Naughty Dog gives the player little choice in the matter. The player watches Ellie grow to loathe vengeance as each action builds upon each other. Then, as a matter of perspective, the player assumes control of another female character named Abby. She herself is on a similar path as Ellie, a tragic event leads to drastic measures, but now she is attempting to redefine herself. The player will see bloodshed, tears and gut wrenching moments that do stay true to Neil Druckmann's intentions on the themes in game. While various parts of the story as fleshed out as much as possible, other parts are largely filled with plot holes. Though no game can realistically flesh out every possible detail and still keep a riveting storyline, I felt detached from some characters during the story. This brings us to the next section.

    Character Development (5/10)
I will say it straight here: this was one of the more disappointing aspects of the game, but nevertheless, there were still good parts. The good: the redemption of both Abby and Ellie is clear as day and the choices they make are reflective of their past and their desires for the future they want. More good: for those who played the first game, we're already attached to Joel and it doesn't take much to know how much Ellie cares about Joel and how that drives her into the adventure she goes on. Now for constructive. Certain supporting cast members felt lackluster. I could never really get attached to them in the way I did with Henry and Sam in the first game. Perhaps the focus was solely on Ellie and Abby for the sake of a story driven by hate. However, even with a lovely story within all this hate (a couple exists that I loved, but never could fully understand the whole dynamics of the two individuals), I only found myself displeased with the death of a character that I only got mere minutes of for a backstory. Certain character details aren't as fleshed out, but for the main characters, Naughty Dog did what they could to tell the story whilst giving players insight to the growth and downfall of each side of Ellie and Abby.

    Graphics (10/10)
Not much to say here other than the world this game is played in is absolutely stunning. I felt like I was in each location and felt the devastation around me. Enemies even looked as human as the main characters and even sounded the same. The dynamics between the graphics and story complemented each other.

    Gameplay (7/10)
The game itself still retains a lot of the exploration seen in the first. If a player wants to make sure they have everything, then scouring the whole map will take a lot more time than usual. The incorporation of jumping and prone mechanics were nice additions that the first game didn't have. They added another element of stealth that is utilized so that encounters weren't always gunfights and fistfights. I do wish the same amount of trophies existed as in the first game, but nothing can change that now. Collectibles still feel meaningful though I do miss having comic relief in the form of jokes and conversations as the first game had. Yet, this game is its own game despite being a sequel to the first.

    Overall Rating: 8/10
Overall, the game has its flaws in the story and character development. I am proud of the work done to flesh out the maps, enemies and other small details. Naughty Dog developed a game they are proud to call theirs. Love it or hate it, there is a certain amount of bliss to the game and I liked it. Though it's not a 10/10 game, I do have to side with the critics: the story hit its mark with me and I understood, even though I wanted the choice to decide, why Neil Druckmann wrote the story. All I have to say is: play or watch someone play the game and make the decision yourself on whether to love it, hate it or be mixed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s a trash story. Filled with absolute nonsense.
They dumb down Joel's character on purpose to make him weak and stupid. In the first game he was very smart and had a ton of experience. He didn't even trust a guy that was sick on the road. He chose to run him over. Later we find out that stranger on the road was not sick and it was all a set up. They do everything to make you dislike Joel and continue to spit on him. They have a trans female/male shoot him in the leg and torture him with a golf club right in the first 2 hours of the game. They spit on him literally. They made Ellie unlikable and a selfish human being. She kills everyone and continued to blame Joel for saving her life. She cared so much in saving humanity because she has the immunity but instead she became a lesbian and chose not to reproduce. Let that sink in. She even let's Abby the one that tortured and murdered Joel in front of her get away with it. Abby also bit off two of Ellie's fingers. Her letting Abby go is basically saying Joel deserved dying. A loveable character who is the main character of the game. There was no justice for Joel. This game robbed everything from you just for shock value. The current narrative of destroying the male character to make the female character rise is very weak story telling. It is disrespectful to both genders. Females even hate it. Worst of all the pacing of the story is horrible. You literally play as Abby the character we hate for half the game. They tried so hard to make us like her but none of it worked. This game is a waste of time and money and should have never been created as a sequel. The critics are liars and they don't care about what the fans want. They only care about their political narrative and force you to like something that you will never accept. Then they insult you by calling you names because you don't like the product they are praising. They are the worst kind of human being. Trust the gamers that actually love playing the kind of video games you like. Those are the ones who you should listen to. Vote with your wallet and avoid this dumpster fire. Why care for a game created by a studio that is run by Neil Druckmann who is a male feminist and does not care about the fans and the people he works with. That's why 75 percent of Naughty dog left the company due to how he treated them. This game is created by people that don't care about you and backed by people that hate you. The game wasn't made for the fans and gamers. Vote with your wallets and avoid this at all cost. Especially how they are trying to trick everyone with false advertisement into buying this. Look it up on YouTube. Don't trust the shill media. Watch the negative videos about this game and you will see the truth. Long live Joel and RIP to The Last of Us franchise. Seriously

I’m not gonna lie, that beginning, and the clever way that marketing made you think otherwise. It hurt, it hurt a lot, but that’s the point! It wants you to feel! And boy does it make you feel. Again, kinda thrown off half way through when you play as Abby. But It is an absolute story must! Not only that! But it opens up the gameplay in a way that genuinely makes sense! Like, come on, Ellie couldn’t rock a flame thrower and do some of the things Abby does. So it makes total sense gameplay wise! I Also came to love Abby she is an amazing character! Every single character is amazing even the enemies! Now on to the gameplay in My opinion it improves on every single gameplay element from the first one and even uncharted 4 as well as adding so many amazing new gameplay aspects and even some awesome “boss” encounters. Please play this game. It is a genuine masterpiece. Expand

In my personal experience, the death of Joel was an impact but did not blind me to hate Abby for the rest of the game. I managed to empathize with her, and enjoyed her just as much as Ellie.

This game shows 2 interesting narratives that could have been more powerful were they played in an alternating way, for example showing flashbacks of the relationship between Owen and Abby and later showing how Ellie kills Owen and Mel. This would have been a bit more empathizing for Abby's character.

Overall, a breathtaking game in what refers to graphics, varied combat mechanics (Though sometimes repetitive at points), and a story that was not perfect, but not garbage either.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has amazing graphics, mechanics, and scenarios, and up until the end of Seattle day 3 I had this game at 10/10. I didn’t realize Naughty Dog was going to make us play as Joel’s torturer for half the game. When I first played as Abby, I thought it was just going to be a quick flashback, and I was thinking to myself “oh cool, these guns will be a part of Ellie’s inventory once it gets back to the main story and I finally kill Abby as Ellie”. First impressions are crucial in my opinion, and the second Abby and her group takes a golf club and beats Joel to death in front of his brother and Ellie, right after they saved Abby from the infected mob, I wanted Abby and her group dead. So I was very disappointed to find out the 2nd half of the game forced me to play as someone I wanted dead. I understand Naughty Dog is trying to have me sympathize with her, but there was nothing she could do to redeem herself, and I honestly didn’t care about her backstory or friends (most of which have already been killed by Ellie during the first half of the game). I had to force myself to trudge through her story, it’s unfortunate too because there were good encounters with the bloater-esque mini boss in the hospital parking garage, and Yara & Lev had a good story. The ending is also very disappointing because poor Ellie is still suffering from PTSD and seeing Joel’s bashed in head, which leads to her tracking down Abby and Lev who were captured by a gang in Santa Barbara. So after Ellie kills every gang member and frees all the prisoners, she finds Abby and Lev tied up on posts by the beach, she cuts them down and they walk to some boats to escape. In the process of escaping, Ellie has a flashback of Joel’s bashed in head again, and challenges Abby to a fight, she doesn’t use anything from her bag of weapons to just kill her, but instead wants to have a “fair” fight with Abby, but she still uses her knife for some reason. After losing two fingers, Ellie gains the upper hand and is in the process of drowning Abby until she has a flashback of Joel except this time it’s a positive flashback, so she lets Abby go and escape with Lev. I understand Naughty Dog is trying to push growth and maybe forgiveness, but Ellie left her girlfriend(wife?) and child for this, she comes home to and empty house, 8 fingers and a guitar from Joel she can no longer play. I’d like to imagine if Ellie was killed, Joel would scorch the earth for her, it’s disappointing that there was no choice to avenge him, and at the last second a flashback where she planned on working towards forgiving Joel stopped her from killing the one person who kept that from happening. Again maybe not everyone shares that feeling, but a choice would have been nice. Another complaint I have about the story is why does Joel still go by his whole full name when he knows he is wanted by any former fireflies from the previous game, let alone give his full name and camp location to a group of armed strangers. I feel like this game tried too hard to get the player to dislike Joel or at least sympathize with the fireflies more. I was disappointed Joel didn’t explain to Ellie the whole situation with the events of the first game at the fireflies hospital in salt lake, because if he did, Ellie would have probably been more receptive to his reasons at saving her, and how the fireflies broke the deal with Joel, and his “payment” for delivering Ellie was getting knocked out, having his possessions stolen and being marched out at gunpoint. So yes my opinion is very biased against a very incompetent Firefly organization, but only because the first game had done such a great job at painting the picture of them. TLDR: Not a fan when I’m forced to play half of the game as a character that kills a favorite character in the first few minutes. Even less of a fan that the daughter of the deceased character never gets revenge on the killer/torturer and she loses her family and two fingers in the process, poor Ellie didn’t deserve that. To begin on a positive, the game play, animation, voice acting and virtually every element of game design within this game were absolutely flawless & like nothing I’ve seen in a game before, for that alone the game is worth playing. However, the games major issues are in its story & script writing. To say it’s weak is being generous. There were glaring plot holes & poor choices in writing throughout the games entirety. The game turned the dark, bitter sweet emotion of the first game, which centres on the father / daughter like relationship between Ellie and Joel ( that I personally consider to be one of the best written narratives of all time) & flushed it down the toilet within the first couple hours of the game, turning it into a social justice push, that thematically didn’t fit with the setting. (Not that I have any issues with social issues being present in games, just that it feels forced & unnatural) Outside of this, the games timeline is constantly jumping back and forth over a number of years, with no continuity, making it unnecessarily complicated & taking away from the immersion in the primary story arch. This also deters you from going out of your way to explore & gather materials to upgrade your arsenal, as the upgrades and weapons you gather don’t travers across time with you, making them for the most part relatively pointless. (Incredibly frustrating discovering a new weapon, to not have it accessible in your next gunfight because you’re at a different point in time) The game sets up smaller, somewhat interesting plot lines, that lead absolutely nowhere & have no resolution, which was painfully irritating, particularly after taking the time to find & read notes, that you have to go well out of your way to find, for them to lead to nothing. The characters motivations are just plain and simply ridiculous, they chop and change between their moral and ethical standpoints & it’s honestly just frustrating to play. The end game is incredibly underwhelming & leaves much to be desired, with no more conclusion than you have about 4 hours prior to the end. By all means play the game & discover the issues for yourself. There are some amazing moments to be had, but overall the fantastic game design, that I & many others have waited 7 years to relive, was dragged down by a lacklustre narrative that was derivative & without any clear direction; that after roughly 30 hours of game play has left me with my hands on my face asking “why?” & “what was the point?” Incredibly disappointed & frustrated. The story was just as good as the first game in my opinion. Good characters that I got attached to. I started out hating Abby’s guts, but by the end of the game I actually think she was a better person than Ellie. I was impressed at the games ability to make me switch sides. I think a lot of the negative reviews of this game come from people who didn’t actually play the game. The only glaring weakness I noticed is the AI making dumb decisions, which is true for most games tbh. Overall, if you like a immersive games with emotional stories, you should play this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was deeply saddened by the direction the team took this franchise. Whats worse is that they seem to have lost touch with their fan base. The first act of the game starts off the best. It is as close to the original, in feel, as the game gets. The cutscenes that show Joel and Ellie’s relationship growth, as a father and daughter, hits a stride reminiscent of the tone shown in part one. I feel these are well done and should have been the focus of the game. This quickly devolves as the game hits its second and third acts. You are forced to play as characters you have no history with and I would go as far to say hate as much as Ellie. There is a quote Druckmann used during development that got alot of attention. The quote goes “We don’t use fun to describe games” or something along those lines. This shows in the game. The focus has shifted from the original to a complex mess of running around and watered down story telling. Ellie’s arc, sadly, feels cheap. She makes decisions that don’t make sense. She is robbed of the revenge she is seeking through out the game. I understand they want to show change, and that Ellie, at this point understands killing and revenge leads no where. But the way this is implemented is poor to the point of juvenile writing. She decides at the end to let Abby live. The player has no chooce in this and makes the nihilistic point of the game feel like a 20-30 hour slog for absolutely no reason. You play far too long as Abby. Abby’s story arc feels rushed and does the exact opposite of what it tries. The team wants us to sympathize and humanize with Abby. This backfires, almost immediatly, we are forced to play as Abby for 10-15 hours...far too long. Abby is a very flat character with an arc that feels cringy and cheap. There is a part in her story where you play as her, and you literally beat the hell out of Ellie and Dina. This part disgusted me. It went two far, and really played out like a grown man beating the **** out of two women. This was disgusting and uncalled for. Additionally there is a sex scene between Abby and Owen in the game. This was also very disturbing. I didnt feel it was needed for character growth, or to further the story. The way its implemented is not sweet or caring but forceful and carnal. Like something out of a prison rape scene. Again - too far naughty dog....too far. You could cut Abby out completely and the story would be the same. Maybe even better.
Then in the final segment you return to Play as Ellie. At this point I felt confused and disheartened as the game I thought I was buying was for me to play as Joel and Ellie. Ellie failed in killing Abby, during round one. She now gets word from Tommy to Abby’s location, and sets out for round two?
The point of this, as I understood it, was to show how Ellie loses everything hunting for revenge. However, I am left wondering why, at this point Ellie is trying to go after Abby again. Ellie has already given up the hunt, but on a whim and some loose info, decides to pick back up the crusade. This is dumb.
Ellie finds Abby after killing a faction, that was only introduced at this point in the game, so we could have bad guys to kill. Ellie finds Abby who has been caught by this faction, fights her and decides to let her go. At this point Ellie has killed 3 of the people who helped kill Joel and let the actual killer go? This made no sense. Why would Ellie kill so many un-named people to get there, just to let Abby go? Why does Ellie act so traumatized by killing? She did it throughout the first game, throughout the second game, with no issue. No remorse, no great self conflict. But now, the three people are so hard to kill? Again dumb story and exposition.
I want the game where I get to play as Tommy. He is a effing rockstar in this game. He gets most the bad guys, he is a bad ass sniper and I want the dlc where I see his story and maybe some revenge at the very end where he snipes Abby.
The best character that got development in this game was Joel. He would have been a perfect way to show diversity had he been the only segment pointing to it. He shouldn’t have been killed in such a disrespectful way. Give me the game that mirrors the first 5 mins where you play as Joel. Give me a remake of the first Last of us with this games graphical improvements. Give me that, not this hot turd.
The things I liked about the game were the graphics..
The gameplay has shown little imporvement from the first game. The jump mechanic is poorly implemented. This was suprising since the team makes uncharted.
In closing. This game misses the mark, doesnt improve on the original and wastes your time with characters you hardly care about. Abby’s story is disgusting, deranged, and irrelevant. Do not buy! Pretend it doesnt exist, play the first last of us, play the remasterd and pretend Naughty Dog didnt hype the last 7 years of your life for a huge let down.

Definitely not a 0 score game, you can't rank a game 0 score simply because you don't like it's story.
The story could've been better, and there're lots of flaws in it as well, but it doesn't matter. It is what it is.

As a game, gameplay, AI, stage design, physics simulation, actor performances, e.t.c. are all top notch,
to me it's at least 8.5, but overall it worth a 10.

But they are both driven by awesome characters and dialogue which I think more than makes up for It. My main gripes: it could be shorter, I’m not a fan of meticulously looking for collectibles, and pills and parts kinda fly in the face of realism. With this, the skill trees and weapon upgrades seem arbitrary and outdated (I’d prefer they make weapon upgrades awards from puzzles or harder enemies, and new skills unlocked depending on how you play to progress) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly this is the best game I've played this year and possibly of all time.
People need to complete this game before judging it.
Everyone is so upset about Joel dying and the number one argument I'm seeing is that he was catious in the first game and is somehow trusting in the second?"
Think about how many people are in their encampment now, and the situation they just got out of being chased down by a horde. They spent years building it to that degree and their is always risks with strangers, but there is HAS to be some form of vulnerability to allow a camp to grow that large. There has to be some form of trust. Joel had a moment of vulnerability, it's a human mistake.
For anyone that actually completed the game the whole theme was about how cruel life can be and how one decision stretches to affect everything around them. Decisions made by all characters which were masterfully portrayed and the very real threat that life could end at any moment. This is a MUST PLAY. It has the best acting you can find out there with the best graphics you can find on the market with an INSANELY dark and gripping story about humanity that you have to experience

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The review bombing for this game is atrocious.

The story of the first game has been done before. But it is done so well. The script and the acting were incredible.

The sequel is the same but maybe even better.

First off though the graphics are incredible. The game does what Naughty Dog does best. Every environment is cluttered. There's no boring empty spaces. Every inch of the environment is thought out. The story telling from the environments sequential art is unparalleled. The animations again are better than any other. The way the characters interact with their surroundings. Not other studio does it this well.

The gameplay is near perfect. The shooting, stealth and exploring mechanics are practically the same as in the first just tweaked to play better. There are 3 main additions to the gameplay though that make the game feel different to its predecessor. First is the prone button. A much needed manoeuvre for this type of game. Second is the dodge button. It perhaps makes things a little easy but it makes up for that by being amazingly satisfying. Third is the ability to quickly squeeze through gaps during conflict. This is something I see many games taking inspiration from going forward. Where it does fall apart slightly is the few glitches or AI not acting how it should. But name a game that's never had a glitch.

    Back to the story.

    SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT!!!

Killing off a main character is so prevalent in TV shows and movies nowadays. So why is it such a big deal cause this game has?

The game takes you everywhere emotionally. Happy, sad, angry but most importantly uncomfortable.

Making you play as a character that eventually kills Joel is just a kick to the crocth. And that's part of the games genius I think. It constantly annoys you with its decisions. But it's done so well you can't help but be in awe of it. The way Joel is killed at first angers and disappoints you. You think "really? That's how it goes down?". It's only later on do you understand how good.it is. One of the three major things talked about the first game is an even bigger deal than we thought. Joel killing the innocent doctors at the end. It comes back to haunt him. And the player. You hate Abby for what's she's done. And you're fully onboard with Ellie's revenge. Until a crazy and risky Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty style character switch. You think you're nearing the end of the game (both narratively and because of the length of the first installment of the franchise) but then it does a huge switch up. You're only half way through the game and now playing through the timeline of the game that have already happened but through Abby's perspective. And at first it's unwelcome. How could Naughty Dog do us dirty like that again? It doesn't feel right playing as Abby. You hate her. But then... You start to understand. You start to sympathise with Abby, even like her. Even root for her. That might be a narrative done before. But it is near perfect in its excitation. And that's what sets it apart.

The closest thing I can think of this happening to a well known character is Jaime Lannister. Overall I can't state how could this game is. It is a masterpiece. It is an example of why games absolutely can be art and not just entertainment. And it's one of my favourite pieces of art I have ever had the pleasure of consuming.

It might not be my favourite game of all time. I can't make my mind up. But if you wanna argue that it is the greatest game of all time, I don't feel like I have anything valid to argue with you against it.

Since the loss of Amy Hennig & Bruce Straley from Naughty Dog (you can read about the in studio conflicts online) their games have not been as industry leading as they once were. Naughty Dog was the biggest jewel in Sonys crown but I’m worried the studio is now on a terminal decline.

I believe Sony were planning on releasing this game at the end of the PS4s time, mimicking the first games release at the end of the PS3s, this gave a massive boost to the new PS4. With this game, it is a massive falter on the eve of the PS5 launch. Combined with other questionable company decisions, the PS5 will have an uphill battle against a resurgent Microsoft. I’ve owned every Playstation console and have never really enjoyed the Microsoft offerings as much, but am considering switching platforms for the next generation. Can a game be that bad that it destroys a studio and looses an entire console generation? Only time will tell.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t typically believe in 10 star ratings, as it means that the experience was literally perfect. However, I’m giving this one full marks to offset some of the idiotic reviews/takes that other posters have made. In actuality, I would give this one a 9.5/10. I have seen some valid criticism of the game, but far more **** from people who either missed the point, did not play it, or only watched a few cutscenes. Pros: Stellar graphics and environments - Ellie and Abby traverse Jackson, Seattle, and California throughout the game. Each area is unique, and offers the player ample opportunity to explore their surroundings. Jackson is snowy and mountainous, Seattle is dark and dreary, and Cali is bright and warm. This diversity in environment allows the player to see how various parts of the United States fared during, and in the aftermath of the pandemic. Excellent mixed gameplay - slow paced exploration allows Naughty Dog to flesh out their characters through conversations. That’s right. If you only watched the leaked cutscenes, you have missed out on hours of dialogue that give better context to the characters actions. Heart pounding encounters with infected and human adversaries offer many different scenarios to mess around with. AI will often treat the same scenario differently if another attempt at a section is made, allowing for a degree of replayability. Combat is absolutely **** brutal, and can often be unsettling. Enemies will be blown apart by explosives, human victims will gurgle their last breaths after being stabbed in the throat, and every once in a while a wounded adversary will beg for their life. While this isn’t the goriest game I have played, the violence is realistic to the extent that it adds to the horrifying nature, and atmosphere of the game. New infected!:

Shamblers are disgusting and dangerous, and a new “hunter” type of enemy can often be found in waitin for Ellie or Abby, leading to some decent jump scares. I won’t say too much about the boss encountered in the basement of the hospital, but I will say that it is horrifying, difficult, and ultimately rewarding to kill. ... The Story: I’m not going to go into too much detail, but The Last of us II offers a complex, thoughtful, and devastating story. You will see fan favourite characters, both old and new killed in gruesome
fashion. One of said deaths (I’m sure most of you already know who) leads Ellie on a quest for vengeance, which ultimately leads her down a dark, and arguably indefensible path. Many people claim that the game boils down to “revenge is bad”, but I feel this is an oversimplification. If you read between the lines, you will find themes of empathy, understanding, and ultimately forgiveness. This is partly the result of a bold decision made by naughty dog, in which the player takes control, and learns the story of the games initial main antagonist. After the final scene, it is abundantly clear that there are no “hero’s and villains” in The Last of us’ universe, which is a nice change of pace from other story driven games, which tend to be more black and white. If you go into this game open minded, and allow yourself to understand the mindsets of certain characters, you will be treated to an excellent story. Cons

A couple inconsistencies in the writing: While I overall adored the writing, parts of the middle section were slightly sloppy, and dragged a little bit. For example, when you are on the island when the wolves attack, you are needlessly thrown into the middle of the fighting. At this point in the story, it would make far more sense for the player to avoid this area at all costs. Abby is trying to save Lev And Yara, yet she ran into the thick of battle?? You initially arrived on the island on a boat, which was stashed in a remote part of the island. This boat would have been perfect for a getaway, but the protagonists insist on pushing into the city to steal another boat. Levs excuse was “there is fighting back that way”. Isn’t there way more fighting around the boats you are trying to steal in the city?? I understand that Naughty Dog wanted to show this set-piece, as it served as a larger scale example of the horrors that often accompany an insatiable lust for vengeance. However, the way they led the player to this scenario seemed a little sloppy, and poorly thought out. Overall: This game is undoubtably one of my all time favourites. If you are willing to set aside your own biases as to what you think the story should be, you will likely get far more out of it.

Of course not everything was perfect. which is why i’m giving it a nine. but the music. the world. the gameplay. the story. it was honestly so good. people rated this game bad because of joel dying. him dying doesn’t make the entire game suck. people need to realize that’s the entire point of this game. which is why it’s good. they told it so well and did it in a very unique way. showing both sides of the story. abbys, and ellie’s. and it all makes sense. was i upset when Joel died? ofc i was. i had to pause the game and i cried for a solid 5 min. but the game was still so good. i’m about to do a survivor playthrough and i can’t wait. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really don't get all the bashing this game is getting, I loved the story from start to finish, and yes, I had read the leaks, and sure, some were true and some were not, I've got some points

-First, Joel dying? Sure made me cry, but I don't think it was something wrong, I mean, it's a zombie-apocalypse world, people die eventually, death itself could be spontaneous, also, we all saw that coming.

-Then, Abby, I really loved Abby, and i didn't thought i would, but the game has on emphazis on character development, Abby killed Joel because of a good reason ( at least from her point of view ), and was mature enough to learn from her mistakes, even faster than Ellie, I liked her character, and the game made me sad too as it gets you to learn and see everything from her point of view after we killed everyone important from her with Ellie.

-Ellie, wel my girl, you can clearly see how she has to make terms with Joel's absence, her grief, her feelings to him ( wich she could never actually told him, as we cleary see that she feels him as a father, but doesn't have the guts to tell him ), and how she clearly gets blind by revenge, it's very human, I mean, I felt pretty connected to her thinking on those who I had griefed in my life, it's a pretty sad journey, and i liked it, also, I loved her relationship with Dina, our little Ellie is so mature!!!

-And the ending, well I can see too why too many people is hating on it, Yeah, we made a long last trip to Santa Carolina just to kill Abby, Ellie even lost everything to Dina and JJ, but there's the catch, Ellie didn't had any more reasons to keep chasing Abby no more, I mean, poor Abby lost everything to Ellie too and still, prefered to just not kill her and Dina, she spared their lives, this, revenge cycle, hatred cycled or any name that you wanna give to, it's a common thread nowadays on media, and I'am not mad that Neil's chose it, as my old cowpoke said ´´Revenge is a fools game´´, and Ellie clearly had to pay for it, ultimately to spare Abby, as her last piece of humanity cames with an image of her loved Joel, I loved that, i felt so bad beating Abby up, I'm glad Ellie didn't became a total monster at the end because of her hatred.

I loved the game, from start to finish, pretty emotional, pretty nostalgic, good story, gameplay is just what you would expect from the first one with few great additions ( being able to lean on the ground for example ), and, I really feel satisfied with it.

I even have friends who used to bash the game because of that stupid snowball effect, and they changed their minds when they played it LOL.

    it's a 10 for me, no more.

This game is difficult, not only to rate but to get through in general, the gameplay along with the animations are 10/10 and the pinnacle of the industry. The story however is where it immensely falls off, it’s not necessarily hot garbage but it’s pretty damn close. To take the characters we love and spent a whole game with and treat them like this is one of the most pointless and colossal **** ups I've ever seen. You could have taken it in any other possible direction and it would have been better than what we got. I didn’t even want to finish this game I had no drive no motivation and still don’t understand how you expected to introduce new characters have them kill our old characters then force us to play over half the game as them. It was a struggle to get through and I have no intentions of playing it again Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a sad day considering I loved The Last of Us so much. A genuinely amazing story, with fantastic gameplay, interesting characters, and a terrifying setting that you must constantly fight through. The final decision Joel had to make was powerful and impactful. This sequel is not that.

If I were rating this as a stand alone game completely disregarding any premise of story prior, and not experiencing the gameplay of The Last of Us, it would probably be a solid 5 or 6 out of 10. The problem is that this story feels like it completely derails the story the first game had. When we finished the first game we saved Ellie, and lied to her about the fireflies. This could have been a great way to build up the second game. We could have had the two search for a cure themselves, and if the writers wanted Joel to die it could have come at the end of the game or near the end of the game. Ellie could have found out that Joel had lied about the fireflies, Abby could have been in a group of fireflies that heard about Ellie, and hunted Joel down. Ellie and Joel have a big fight, and they split up only for Ellie to hear gunfire, and find Joel dying at the hands of Abby. Then, Ellie has to fight and come to terms with the fact that she cared deeply for Joel, but his lying and protection of herself jeopardizes the fate of the world. Something along those lines could have been fantastic and very well executed. We could have played the parts as Abby prior to this to build up her character and motivations for doing what she does. It could have been an amazing sequel to an already amazing game.

We didn't get that though. We got a sloppy, poorly executed story. Joel dies very, very early on. We have no build up for this Abby character, and then are expected to play as her? That is insanity. Why in gods name would I want to play as a character who just killed an incredibly beloved character? This could have been circumvented so easily if the game had you play as Abby in the beginning and turn her into a character we cared about as well, but it doesn't. Instead we get a horrible impression of her immediately, have to suffer through playing as her, which then feels like a chore because we already dislike her, and then we are expected to believe Ellie just forgives her in the end. It's sloppy. It's not a good story. It doesn't captivate me. It made me frustrated to even play the game.

Now I'm very critical of stories in games, because it's the main reason I'm playing them. The gameplay was still good, but it felt very lazy because it was like a copy and paste of the first game's gameplay. While it's not a bad thing considering I already spending 50+ hours on the last of us, spending more time doing the exact same stuff starts to feel tedious and boring. I wish they did more to change up or add some new interesting mechanics to spice it up a bit. It really could have turned this review into at least a 5/10 if the gameplay was able to bring more enjoyment to the game itself. The graphics and sound design were beautiful, it's just too bad that graphics and sound design don't mean anything if your game isn't up to snuff.

Once finding out I had to do all 3 days again as Abby, I went from looking into every nook and cranny, to just run and gun. As it was sorta pointless as you know what’s going to happen. Also don’t understand how Joel could get so easily ambushed in this game, but in the first game he knew straight away that the man on the highway who wanted help, was apart of an ambush, and he even didn’t trust Ellie at the start but did Abby. After finishing the game I sat back and fought to myself that whole journey was pointless, and felt like I would of been better off just spoiling the game for myself and not buying it. Positives are great graphics and I enjoy the combat and the new prone and hiding features. The best thing ND can do in my opinion. Is for this to be the final Last of Us game, and move onto another project. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Other than the lush environments and character models, every charming detail that made us fall in love with the first game just isn't here. There are no interesting NPCs, no comic relief and every note and artifact you pick up feels pointless and fails to tell a story (nothing close to the quality of Ish's story in the first game).

Joel, Ellie and Tommy have had drastic changes made to their characters without any logical development to suit the narrative of the game. Joel, who was once the most cunning and resourceful of all characters is now gullible and plain dumb, as is his brother. The two of them walk into a blatant trap, unarmed with complete strangers, resulting in Joel's death, for the sole purpose of pushing a lacklustre plot and unbelievable story. Ellie, who was by far my favourite character from the first game has not one line of interesting dialogue, nor any level of decent character development throughout the game.

This is a long game that is largely rammed with filler - jumping back and forth between plots that are riddled with flashbacks and dreams within flashbacks within other flashbacks. It makes the story feel disjointed and without a clear purpose. It's the epitome of bad storytelling, and frustratingly the game forces you to switch protagonists when it's finally finding any sort of rhythm - thus killing all tension and demolishing the story arc in one fell swoop.

You proceed to play the second half as Abby (Joel's murderer) for nearly half of the game, doing nothing but completing side quests and being subjected to soppy and cringey cut scenes, in what feels like the most unwanted DLC in the history of gaming. It's nothing but a lazy attempt at making you feel empathy towards the new characters without writing them into the game properly in the first place. Sorry, but getting raw-dogged in the back of a yacht in a creepy aquarium just isn't going to cut it. In fact, I spent more time during my play through finding new satisfying ways to kill Abby as brutally as I could than I did trying to finish it.

If I could choose to go back and not play it, I would. Even after 25-30 hours of playing the story, somehow, amazingly, no progression is made at all, nothing changes and by the end the message sent to the player is that the whole play through wasn't worth it in the first place - the only sentiment from the game that I wholeheartedly agree with.

Ok, so let's get this right. the graphics are superb. possibly the best atm and the gameplay is quite good and i honestly have no idea what else they could add. but there is a reason i did not give it a 10, and for which no one has given it a 10, and that reason is divided in a few specific points. 1) how brutal Joel's death was. i honestly felt almost as Ellie with the zumbing ears and all. it hit us all hard and all got enraged, which was the objective, this did not cause a lower score in my review though. 2) we all were quite immersed in the story, following Ellie's (and our) quest for revenge, when suddenly they clash with Abby and GD BOOM, we play as Abby, the character we hate the most. i get the point, we all did. Abby wanted to get revenge in the first place, but it did not make Joel deserving of such a tormentous death, more so when he and Tommy had just saved her. She killed our most beloved character in a horrible way. and then we are forced to play as her. this was the first game that instead of making me feel good and have fun, made me feel angry while playing it, and not angry at a scene or a bug, but at the game's design itself, because i had to play as someone i hated and no, i never grew fond of her, i simply kept hating her more and more. before being forced to play as Abby, the game had a 10/10 to me. 3) The difference on difficulty between playing as Ellie and Abby, when we start playing as Abby, we are already pissed, but what also pissed me off was the fact that Abby's journey was so much harder, making Ellie's feel like an introduction or tutorial. 4)The story, was not the best i can't lie. it had more than a friggin way to be so much better and intense. the insight onto Abby was completely unnecesary, and the ending, made it all look absurd. but honestly what i hated the most was playing as Abby. it was stupid and unnecesary, like at all. if a part 3 is coming, i doubt i'll play it. cause i don't see Ellie being there, i see Abby, and like Ellie, i only remember Joel's death when looking at her. playing as Tommy would have been so much better instead of her. so the game's great, until they make you play as Abby, force you to beat the **** out of your second most beloved character and then, when you have the chance to finally get revenge on her, let her live, leaving all the previous events as worthless. This game does a great job making you hate a character and then making you hate the game itself. other than that, the game is good and at least deserves to be played. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am truly disgusted by the last of us 2, not because Ellie is a part of the LGBT or any other nonsense. It's because of how sony published the trailer with Joel in it and saying "You think I'd let you do this on your OWN?" this game just scammed me. I stayed away from the spoilers and I thought it will be the best game I will ever play. But like 1 hour and 30 minutes into the game and Joel died. I felt sad and mad. Especially at Abby so well done Naughty dog for that but just why? Why Joel so goddamn fast? I didn't wait 7 years just some buffed ugly hoe to kill my favourite character and the main character of the last of us. But I didn't stop playing and went into Seattle to get revenge. Many people like jacksepticeye said it isn't worth it. But me and most of the community plus Pewdiepie we wanted revenge so badly. So good job Naughty dog for that one too, you actually made me play the game just so I get revenge on Abby. Guess what? You first have to kill most of her friends just to get to her. It still didn't made me soft on Abby. So fast fowarding a bit when you kill mel which is pregnent. You get home to the cinema and have a good day with Jesse and Tommy. I was actually kind of happy because they reuinited but still in shock that Ellie just killed a pregnent lady. I mean self-defence but still. Tommy then goes outside of the room and then gets down on the floor. You hear something in the other room and you fastly try to run to the door to check what's happening. You immediately go inside and Jesse gets shot into the head. And see Abby that **** **** hurting Tommy. She says throw your gun away while pointing at Tommy. After that, she points at you looking like she killed Ellie. So you get furious that she killed Jesse and might actually even killed Ellie, so another point for Naughty because they wanted you to feel that way. Then -10000 points for Naughy because it's making you play as **** Abby for 10 hours. At this part, I was so unbothered but I still went into the adventure. Just to empathize for Abby and see Ellie is actually the bad guy. Basically she justs saves a Zebra and some scars members because apparently the other one was trans and cut her hair off but it was against the rules for women to cut their own hair off but whatever. They actually save you first but then you save them after like a day of **** WITH OWEN. Like what in the actual **** I ain't watching some women getting ****ed while having pecs. Jk. Anyways she saves them blah blah blah. and Yara one of the sisters that Abby saved had her arm destroyed by some buff guy from the scars. So you try to help them and give them a secure safe home with Owen and Mel. You find out that you have to chop her arm off or she will get sick and probably die but you don't have the right tools so you have to travel to the hotel on some bridges built by the scars which were pretty cool. Then they find out that you escaped trying to find Owen because he killed a friend of yours and his. But apparently you weren't allowed by Issac. So you get locked up but a friend of yours which is still alive decides to release you. The worst part is you have to go into the zone where the first of the first people got the virus. So obviously there will be a part of the infection you never have seen before. A giant zombie boss that has been composed of multiple infected. Honestly scary to see in real life but in a video game for me personally it was actually cool looking. You kill it and honestly. Best part of the game over there. You get back to Lev and go back. She got her arm removed and it was nice for a while but then Lev wanted to go back on the island that the scars took over, where their mother was. So you must follow her, but at the same time, the WLF is attacking. Lev kills the mother because the mother was 100% crazy and didn't agree with Lev. After you get Lev Issac comes out of nowhere and just kills Yara, obviously Lev was sad but had to go on. You escape the island and go back to the home where Mel got killed and Owen, You find a map of where Ellie is located and confront her. Then YOU **** HAVE TO FIGHT WITH ELLIE. LIKE SERIOUSLY, this part made me so mad. And she even actually **** wins but lets Ellie alive. So after like 1 year, I think it wasn't mentioned anywhere. Dina's baby is born and you have a cute house in the countryside. Then Tommy comes and tells you about Abby and Lev which made me mad that even Tommy asked Ellie that such a thing when she even had a family. Dina shuts him off and he leaves. So while sleeping you get nightmares of Joel. She decides to go to kill Abby which I actually kind of understand. She had nightmares of Joel and to be honest what would you do in the same situation just keep on living having nightmares of your "dad" or make justice for him. Obvs I was kind of happy but for Ellie not really, she had a family. Abby was looking for the fireflies. But got captured and Ellie asked to fight and not just shoot her. 5000Max Expand

Great game loved it In every way. Such a sad story being told the whole time but that is just what the world of the last of us is about. Can not wait for the multiplayer in the future. Thanks again Naughty Dog.

Masterpiece of a game! Just try and keep an open mind. The story might not go how you want but appreciate what it does.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
