This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty dog misled its customers in its trailer. The reason the first game was so successful was the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Instead of building off of that, Naught Dog went in a completely random direction and ignored everything that the players loved originally.
Why make the player play as someone they dont care about for half the game? This is a story game and the story was mediocre at best. So unbelievably disappointed.

    Absolutely a masterpiece.
A game that, as media, has shown that gaming in fact reached its maturity in storytelling.
The story belongs to the artist, to its creators. People want to take ownership and control over the story. Childish way to face the world. The traditional gamer community wants only the conventional power fantasies with heroes with happy endings. Once more: childish.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They didn't run out of ideas, that's for sure. However, the ideas they ended up using are very telling of the questionable narrative talents of Halley Gross and the other two "writers" Neil hired as fillers.

The plot holes in both narration and character arcs made this sequel disconnected from what the fans loved and championed about the first. In a way I get what ND was going for because in the real world if this were to happen, it would likely end up the same way: merciless, unfair, and saddening; but the execution needed a little help from Troy, I believe. Maybe it wouldn't have been so jarring to fans had he voiced and mocapped the "sequence" to show more the regret Joel had for trusting a pack of strangers and giving his and Tommy's names outright. There's a part there were they could've zoomed in on him and showed this so as not to leave the fans saying 'what the hell happened to Joel? a hunter would never do this!'

Also, what happened to the black doctor we all shot in the first game?! Yes, the surgeon in the first game was black, which makes Jerry's character so bizarre and last-minute to even include.

Still giving it a rating of 6 because it tried with all the Mortal Kombat fatalities which was nice. And you can't deny those graphics. That next-gen rendering alone already gives this game half the score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First things first: Joel deserved to die. It hurts to see such a developed and complex protagonist get killed off in the way he did, but after the events of the first game, after he doomed humanity in a bloody massacre, he had only one fate left for him. That being said, the important part isn't even that he died, it was the effect it had on Ellie, supplemented on the flashbacks given throughout the game. Immediately after opening herself up to forgiveness after what he did, she lost him in the most brutal was possible, starting a seemingly endless chain of revenge and regret. All that only to realize how emotionally draining the path of vengeance can be.

As far as the supposed agenda goes, Ellie was shown to be lesbian even in the DLC to the first game. This was no new development, and was a simple continuation to established story. Lev's revelation of being a trans male was a subtle, yet profound commentary on the issues people today face. Just because something is included in a game doesn't mean it is part of a hidden political agenda. If that was the case, then every gaming company would be actively encouraging violence or even murder. The inclusion was a subtle, refined, and well deserved nod to the LGBT community.

It was more than interesting to play a modern RPG with no freedom of choice. From Witcher, to Red Dead, to Life is Strange and beyond, every modern RPG has had some form of choice via action or dialogue to imbed the player into the protagonist, and I don't think many people took too kindly to the very real train of thought that Ellie took throughout the game. I for one, am thankful for this change of pace. I cant imagine an impressionable and bloodstained teen reacting very differently to her surrogate father's death, justified or not. I completely understand why she did what she did after looking back on all she ever knew in this hellscape of a world. Abby, on the other hand, lived in our pre-apocalyptic world, and because of that had a similar view to us, the players. I found myself understanding and agreeing with every choice she made, even if I hated it. It was a brilliant way of developing a complex villain. Every choice made by every character was tailor made for that character, and letting the viewer change that with choice would tarnish the purity of the development. This was storytelling at its finest.

The gameplay was simply fantastic. There were parts that I found myself frustrated, yet mesmerized due to the difficulty. The action was real. It was dangerous. It was to be avoided if possible at the threat of guaranteed death. It fed perfectly into the hopeless setting painted by the brilliant graphics and storytelling. Different factions of enemies had vastly different ways of hunting you down, all requiring their own unique approach on medium to high difficulties. The subtle notes left throughout the map further expanded on the hopeless mood of the setting. Finding random elements in the world to trigger full on story scenes gave it a near open world feeling. I wish more games would venture out to create unique experiences like this.

While it may have been among the most depressing games I've ever played, it was undeniably incredible and compelling. 10/10 would recommend.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They had 7 years to write and figure out AT LEAST a DECENT send off to one of the game's most loved characters and protagonists. Heck, they had 7 years to come up with anything they wanted. Instead, they gave us this trashpile of a storyline where Joel dies like an incompetent boy-scout on his first day out basically shutting his brain off and not acting like we know he would by breaking his own rules. Then, we have to play for what it felt like an eternity with MA'AM (whom we could care less about tbh) and go through a lot of unnecessary things that are forgettable at best. When we FINALLY get to the end, you give us some stupid excuse for why Ellie doesn´t complete her revenge journey. WHAT IS THIS?! These characters are making the stupidest and most non-sensical decisions ever! They're not acting in the way they would if someone competent had written the story!

The only reason this is getting 4 of 10 is because the game actually runs (despite some glitches every now and then) and the graphics and sound and what not.

We were better off without this sequel.

I do NOT judge games based on a meticulous set of principles or mechanics, such as how the gunplay felt or how the sound quality was. Instead, I judge games on the entire experience and how I felt after the credits rolled. I understand that this type of review may not be for everyone, but if you were like me in any way, I think you’ll enjoy this.

CONTEXT: The first last of us was my favorite game of all time. I say WAS because the last of us part 2 has filled its role. I understand that neither the first nor second last of us has the most inanely deep story like the Witcher 3 or something, but its execution is beyond anything I’ve ever played before.

Preface: There is, unfortunately, a LOT of troll hating going on, do not listen to it. I actually really appreciate the people who genuinely don’t like it and provide legit criticisms. As the director, Neil drunk man said, this game is going to divide people, and it certainly did. That being said, let me say why I think the last of us 2 is a 10/10.

This is NOT a comprehensive review that describes each individual component of the game (gunplay, sound, controls, etc) but rather I speak from the heart and I want to convey why I think this game is amazing. I was very nervous after the initial backlash before the game was released since the first game was my favorite of all time and I didn’t want its image to be tarnished in my mind. That being said here’s why I love this game.

IN MY OPINION, this game accomplishes everything we were told it was going to be. It shows how the cycle of violence can make anyone act unpredictably, it makes you question the motives of characters you’ve loved for years, and it facilitates every aspect of its core gameplay around the story. This game has brought up emotions in me that I have never felt from any piece of media before. It gut punches you approximately 10 times throughout the story and I believe this is why so many gamers are upset. This game does not make you “feel good“ in fact, by the very end, it’ll make you feel very sad. I may be wrong, but I feel like most gamers wanted a cool, exciting story with a happy ending (like every other story ever), but naughty dog did what most others don’t, they didn’t create THAT kind of story.

The gameplay and shooting mechanics are not the most picture-perfect refined controls ever, the scavenging does not facilitate a perfect crafting system, but every decision about every mechanic in the last of us 2 feels like it was specifically made to make the player feel grounded in reality and to facilitate the story unfolding. If you loved the last of us 1, and you have an open mind as to what fate may lie ahead for certain characters, I think you’ll very much enjoy the last of us 2. If not, that’s ok, but as someone who was extremely invested in the first game, I loved this one even more, and although I came out of this one crying (I actually did), the fact that it could elicit such strong emotions is why I think this game deserves a 10/10.

It is not perfect, the last of us 1 wasn’t perfect, no game is perfect, but the storytelling, gameplay, and characters proved to be an astonishing and powerful experience.

I will never forget this experience, and that’s a great thing.

P.S. As far as the controversial “diversity” choices made in this game, I did not feel like it took anything away from the story. It is not shoved down your throats by any means. And I say that as someone who thinks that “forced diversity” just for the sake of diversity is nonsense.

Otherwise, this is an absolute masterpiece of the medium. Incredible set pieces and boss fights, many of which will remind you of the best of the survival horror genre while standing head and shoulders above the rest. Much improved gameplay. The story is incredible, and the ending makes sense once you realize the only way Ellie can begin to forgive Joel is by ending the cycle of violence he and the Fireflies started. His death had to mean something different, as did Ellie's life. Characters are fantastic. Abby is great, and her entire arc makes sense once you understand her motivation. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a huge fan of The last of us and to say this game is a disappointment is an understatement, Neil Druckmann should be ashamed about lying to the thousands of fans by adding Joel in the trailers only to find you get zero proper gameplay with him as he dies in the first 2 hours. Joel is a character that trusts no one except those who he holds extremely close such as Ellie and Tommy. We know from the first game that Joel and Tommy crossed many different people in there first twenty years following the outbreak but yet Joel and Tommy walk straight into this group of people like idiots resulting in Joels death. The thing that made the first game so amazing was the relationship between Joel and Ellie and the directors just throw it away. There is zero character development of Ellie in this game if anything her character becomes less interesting and unlikeable. One of the major issue is that you are forced to play as Abby the woman who kills Joel , for approximately half of the game. This is done in an attempt to make you feel sympathy for this character but it simply does not work. Playing as Abby is horrendously unenjoyable and as well as this you already know where the character ends up as you have played Ellies version of the same 3 day period meaning that even if you were to care about Abby at all you know nothing can happen to her. In my opinion Abby is given the better weapons in an attempt to make her playthrough more enjoyable but all this does is take away from Ellies half of the game. I enjoyed some of the new characters such as Jesse, Dina , Lev and Yara but once again Druckmann chooses to kill off some of these main characters as if its nothing. For example Jesse is killed stopping him from building up any traction as a truly memorable character. Aside from the story my game was riddled with bugs i.e characters walking through brick walls, falling through the map and glitchy cutscenes. This game is a disservice to the fans who have been waiting seven years to see Joel and Ellie in action again and Neil Druckmann needs to apologise to the fans for destroying this long awaited sequel.

The combat is better than the original, the animation and aesthetic of the world is beautiful, and despite individual interpretation of the story, the execution is excellent. The world of The Last of Us is a tragic and unfair one, and this felt like a natural progression of Ellie and Joel's story. While I thought it was a fantastic sequel, and may even surpass the original game with time, others may disagree. However, please finish the game and keep an open mind before needlessly spreading hate. Expand

There is a ton of hate out there right now due to how this game was made but I just want to commend Naughty Dog on one the most complex stories I have been able to experience. It is definitely not an easy story and it is not for everyone. However, in a world where we are fighting for social justice this is just the kind of story we need. This game takes you on a necessary emotional roller coaster, where you see that everything is gray. You will not find clear-cut lines that tell you who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. You will not see what is right and what is wrong in this game. This game shows you why both sides (and there are many sides between Ellie vs Abby, Scars vs Wolves, and so forth) believe more than anything that what they are doing is right and justified. This game shows you that the world is grayer than you think and sometimes to see what is actually right and wrong in a situation you have to consider the other side as well as your own. We are a world divided just like in this game. We are republican’s vs democrats. We are Christians vs non-Christians. We are mask wearers vs non mask wears. We are Trump supporters vs non-Trump supporters. We are just always fighting and divided. We never take the time to understand the other side and see where they are coming from. To see that in this world there is no clear-cut lines pointing to what is right and what is wrong. Every situation is different just like every person is different. This is the type of message we need to be having in this divided world. We need to take the time to walk in each other’s shoes and see the situation from another perspective. Only then can we truly respect each other and make a difference in this world. So again, Naughty Dog thank you so much for taking the risk that you did on this game to give us a story that we truly needed. Am I sad and emotional? Most definitely! But the journey was amazing, thoughtful, engaging, and so damn realistic even for a zombie-type game. Showing us that there are no good guys and bad guys but just people. And people are messy, complicated, and very imperfect. Expand

This game is nowhere near the masterpiece it is touted as but it's not a terrible game either. I appreciate Naughty Dog for attempting to push the boundaries of emotional intensity but while this is praiseworthy, they failed spectacularly. The characters could all be interchanged with their motives, and no one would know the difference. Ellie, who you would come to love in the first game as a spunky, lighthearted but caring person is devolved into whatever it is they call a character. I do understand why they wanted to go this direction with the story, but it's so poorly done and contrived. Ellie's voice actor's talented was wasted by this script.

The gameplay overall was quite fun for the first 10-15 hours but puzzles they used in the first game, are too far and few between here. It soon gets stale and if that isn't bad enough, they throw a huge tonal shift at you and expect the same gameplay to carry you through for another 10 hours or so. That being said, the environment design is amazing and it does make Seattle feel like it's own character. What they did here was nothing short of amazing. I think most people would like the story beats and feel it compelling for the first half of the game and does have some pretty good moments. Overall, I'd say I'm ok with the beginning and ending of the story, but getting there was emotionally painful and unpleasant to play through. This is a videogame first and foremost after all and thus I can't give it a positive score for any of it's redeeming qualities.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Pues no... O a Ellie.. O...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing the The Last of Us Part 2 for 11 hours, my thoughts...

Gameplay graphics, physics, cinematics are beautiful. This is easily one of best looking PS4 games ever. Better than God of War, Marvel Spider-Man, etc.

This game has larger, open, more explorable environments. This is where the game shines. Deviating from the main path to explore another route or building proved quite thrilling at times. They weren't kidding when they said you'd need a horse to get around sometimes.

The musical soundtrack is pretty dull except when you run or encounter enemies. The gameplay feels exactly like its predecessor. However, this game is more refined and polished. Being able to dodge and go prone proves invaluable in enemy encounters.

The dialogue and voice acting is superb. Some of the best I have ever seen since the Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2. I will acknowledge this game is not fun to play. It's moody, depressing, and devoid of any jubilant emotions. It can be rather boring. I'd advise watching comedy movie after playing this because you'll likely be feeling down.

I will say this game has more intense enemy encounters than it's predecessor. Regarding the leaks, if you have already spoiled yourself then yes everything you heard or seen is true. That's all I say.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first saw the First teaser trailer for the last of us part 2 I was under the impression that Ellie was of course enraged with a group, and she was going to get revenge with Joel trying to talk her out of it. The next few trailers later it still shows Joel and Ellie giving hints about the story being about revenge. One trailer showed Abby, which no one ever would’ve guessed she was going to be a playable character and would be a nuisance to the entire game. I bought the game and played it with an open mind, not with a “closed” one according to Neil cuckmens little remark. I was of course under the impression Joel would join Ellie as the companion this time as you play as Ellie because of said trailers. Of course 2 hours in you’re swapping between both Ellie and Abby. Which was already starting to become a stupid idea. A brand new character that we know nothing about is playable within the first hour. I didn’t think much of it until 2 hours in. Abby kills Joel and doesn’t show the reason why at all. After his death I didn’t feel sad in the slightest. I felt annoyed at the fact Joel doesn’t even appear in the game unless it’s flashbacks, which is stupid. Instead of making Ellie’s story so mixed up and just making her have flashbacks with memories of Joel and having to go back and forward with Abby and Ellie, why couldn’t be start the game off arriving at Jackson with Ellie? It would’ve made the game a lot better, it would’ve given Joel a lot more time to be in the game, and it would’ve actually gotten a way better score. Finish the game with Ellie’s story and unlock abbys after, or make a dlc for abbys side of the story. But no, we get to play 10-12 hours with someone we already don’t like, that we have to learn why they had to end Joel and naughty dog really think ya we’d be attached to characters with no kind of development behind them. We have your average Mexican character that is forced to have an accent which is really generic and pretty racist because believe it or not, not every Hispanic has an accent after years of living in the US, then we have the generic love triangle, not to mention on both sides of the story, both Ellie and Abby are in one. No one hates the game because Ellie is gay, everyone who played the first knows that she’s into girls, I love Ellie for the character development. That’s the reason everyone felt close to both of these characters both Ellie and Joel, because of the journey they took together. No one cares about a group of people who you learn about in under 12 hours. The last of us took me far longer to beat than part 2, this game was complete **** because of how lazy naughty was and how much they could’ve done and added but didn’t because Neil has his head too far up his ass to even make the characters have common sense. Last time I checked Joel did not trust a stranger, like the “hurt” hunter from the first game. Since when did he go so soft? The fact that we know so little about both Jesse and Dina and they want us to feel any kind of bond with them. I saw Jesse getting his face blown off and literally wasn’t fazed by it that’s how **** the development was, we knew nothing about Jesse. Just that him and Dina dated and he was friends with Ellie. Unlike Sam and henry from the first, you actually knew they were by themselves and you saw how much Henry did for his little brother. And in the end Sam turns and Henry kills himself. What did we know at all about Owen and Mel other than they were going to have a baby? What did we know about any other one of abbys friends other than they were her friends? How do they expect us to like them when we don’t even know anything about them and we already killed them before we learned what they were like, and it’s not like we were given an actual choice like a TellTales game. This games mechanics are like the first but with minor upgrades, which for me isn’t a problem, I got this game wanting a story close to the 1st but since the first trailer I knew it was unlikely but I was expecting to play as Ellie and only as Ellie but we couldn’t even get that. AND NO I DONT LIKE THE GAME BECAUSE IM A “homophobe” or “transphobic” or because I’m playing with a lesbian female. I hate the game because the way they organized the story and the fact we were forced to swap with a completely new character that I hated within the first 2 hours. Flashbacks should’ve been played first so they wouldn’t be flashbacks, literally they were so **** pointless, Ellie just goes through something the screen goes dark and literally what just happened to her does not relate at all to her flashbacks of Joel. I hope naughty dog learns from this. And if they plan on making a 3rd they shouldn’t use Ellie anymore because they’ll only make another crap story Expand

Please if you are not a homophobe nor a 12 years old spoiled kid that only knows to throw a tantrum about everything sit through this 26-27 hours masterpiece of a game and then come and give it a zero. I honestly don't understand all the people nagging about the game, some didn't even played the game for more than 3 hours.

I'm not gonna go through too much detail to avoid spoiling anything. the game carries most of functionalities from TLOU1 and has many new ones. graphic wise it's as beautiful as it gets. the main problem that I had with the game was the character movement, which I got used to and I think I could easily ignore that in my rating. I love the fact that the story was an emotional roller coaster. I strongly believe that it's not everyone's cup of tea but if you are angry because of the story line and gave it a low score just think about the fact that game did what it supposed to do artistically.

Yes I am also bummed about *the* spoiler earlier on in the game, but that doesn’t change the fact that the game itself is a masterpiece. The Last of Us Part II is, like The Last of Us, one of the best games of all time and if you’re thinking about not getting it just bc of that one spoiler thing (or the fact that you’re playing as a female protagonist) then you lack the maturity to enjoy and appreciate this game to its fullest. Take that bias aside and play through the game... then decide your opinion instead of automatically trashing its ratings. Anyway, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND BOTH THIS GAME AND THE ORIGINAL. Expand

Any game can be argued to be imperfect but nit picking aside, I can't think of any other game more deserving of a 10. I feel for Naughty Dog given the organised and malicious review bombing, but hey - if the main reason is an adverse reaction to the fate of key characters, then it's a credit to the game how intensely connected players are to those characters. I spent a while considering if TLOU2 was better than #1 - or if the sequel was justified. But fans wouldn't have been happy without a sequel (and dare I say there will be flaming if #3 isn't produced). But on reflection I think you have to think about this as "Part 2", and how it really does complement the first game and fills in the story. I partly agree with some who thought there should have been some player decisions allowed to drive the ending - but like a good (if tragic) novel - this is the story that has been told. And it's emotive power is apparent - which is primarily what makes it the triumph I think it will be regarded as. Cutting edge graphics, gameplay and flow are all there but secondary to this. To all the haters, get over it - life isn't all black and white and the good guys don't always live happily ever after. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Last of Us Part 2 is the worst video game sequel I’ve ever played. The writing shows so little respect for the player’s intelligence, the gameplay does little to improve from the first game, and the events which transpire are so forced that it becomes laughable. I encourage everyone not to buy this game. The original is worth your time and money, but this one can burn in Hell where it belongs.

The ending was disappointing and pointless I would rather have Ellie kill the woman who killed her father figure than to let her walk freely. Hoping there will be a DLC to see if Ellie gets closure and kill Abby. Other than that I'm quite disappointed with this game, and shocked with the meta score being so close to the original. Expand

The protagonist (I don't want to say her name) plot armor is so f****ing ridiculous.
The ending make no sense. Revenge is bad? lol classic. I really hate this kind of story. Make no sense.

The last of us intenta.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
