This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a big fan of the first game and its characters Joel and Ellie, I am really disappointed by this game. Graphics and sound are great, but the story is trash. I've watched the entire game on youtube, I'm not gonna give 60 bucks for this garbage. I would not download it even if it was free on Playstation Plus. What a horrible sequel. Everything in this story is either nonsense or it spits on everything the first game stood for. Joel is a skilled survivor, he wouldn't be that stupid to give his name to strangers. Also, why do we have to play with Joel's killer for so long? No amount of context will ever make me sympathise with Abby after she kills Joel (in that horrible way) after he saved her life. This is disgusting. This is just leftist/progressive agenda, let's get rid of main male characters, let's get rid of male role models as to not be misogynistic. Joel was a a father figure to all of us who played the first game and we got very attached to this character. He didn't deserve a death like this. Also, Ellie is very angry, I couldn't get a reason to bound with her in part 2. Very bad writting. This mindset may work in California, but not in the rest of the world. Also , the trailers were so deceiving. The developers said that the game will be divisive. Let's hope that the sales numbers are also divisive. Expand

It's amazing continuity of the first part. I don't know what all these haters found so disappointing in the new part, the story is still stunning and keeps your attention for the whole 30 hours. 10/10.

3 for the nice graphics - but that's all. Rest is uninspired and meaningless. You can't put queer people in a game thinking that's all you need to get a good story ... no, that does not work ... not for me.

If you want to play games with a "deep" story I'd recommend games like "Witcher 3", "Pathologic 2", "The Last Of Us" 1, "Red Dead Redemption" 2 or "Persona 5".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start off by saying what I did like. The graphics were breathtaking, there's a lot of environments that look beautiful and astonishing, great work to the cgi animators, mocap workers etc. The actual fighting in the gameplay was fairly good with little to no bugs (that I've experienced). But now to what I disliked. Although the gameplay was alright, it got very repetitive after a certain point thinking of the fighting sequences more of a chore than fun. The characters have apparently had off screen character development because the characters from the first game are completely different. Ellie is now ruthless, Joel gives away his name to strangers casually. But that's not all, the characters in this game don't even go by their own logic, as if they don't know who they are. Abby was saved by Joel and kills him. Later on she protects 2 kids because they saved her life. Not to mention her father died a quick and painless death with a bullet to the head, yet she abused and tortures her father's killer. Would definitely not play this game again or recommend it to anyone. If it was a stand alone zombie film or game, then I would give it a 6 or 7/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Makes you sit through an entire tutorial for an awesome new melee weapon, then never lets you use it once through the entire game. Had a lot of fun with VATS mode, nice to see combat opened up for anyone, especially drunk people. Finished the game, thought about collecting all the artefacts, but chapter select is still broken (cut and paste glitch from the first game) so it's way too much hassle. Finishing the game was about as rewarding as a dropped ice cream.

I did enjoy taking selfies, my favourite was in the middle of a large pile of bodies. They all accidentally ended up there of course because the AI is still partying like it's 2013. Six trillion hours of development time spent on a rope VS me hiding behind a couch next to seven bodies and the guy in the police vest not being able to make the connection....

It's great to see people like me being portrayed in video games. I talk to myself a lot too. In the first game there was usually someone there to talk to, which was just unrealistic. Having large parts of this game being made up of one character on their own chuntering randomly to themselves really brought it home for me.

I think the high point of the game for me was the discovery of the option to auto collect. Suddenly my character was reaching out and realistically grabbing everything as I ran past. It's fantastic how far games have come with their capabilities. Obviously not as far as Paris Games Week 2017, I'm guessing that was footage from the PS5 remaster.

Out of all the PlayStation exclusives I'd say this one made me want to be an XBOX owner the most. Liked the game so much I'll probably buy the main characters collectors edition when it's released.

No one wants to switch characters so much and no one wants to fight the games hero as one of the last major battles of the game. A great addition to the series that in many ways beats the original, but also lacks in certain areas. If your looking for much more fluid and heartpounding gameplay than this is for you. If you want a copy of the first game story and relationship between ellie and joel, i advise you watch or read a proper review on the game as the story will most likely turn out the way that you hope.

ND Pulled no punches here and it’s the perfect nod to the original. They continue to create and build on an unforgiving environment and a world that keeps you on the edge of your seat for 25+ hours. A couple of pacing issues- however I think this occurs in your first play through as you’re so desperate to see a conclusion. On second play through it levels out nicely and you can really hook in and enjoy the ride including the subtleties and insane attention to detail.

    Well done Naughty Dog!

    Overall:
I have played many story driven games LOU1, metal gear games, Horizon, Gears of war, everything you can think of since gaming began (I'm getting on in age). This is one of, if not the best game I've played. It was so varied in the different locations and things that happen. The combat mechanics are just amazing, and just the right amount of improvements to the first game. Story is massively rewarding and has your emotions switching left and right, and it left me wanting more once the game had ended. So much so I started again straight away which I've never done before. I can't sing its praises enough. Much better than the first Last of Us game.

Story: The story is up there with even the best movies / tv shows. Can it win an oscar? Is it possible because it should. There is a shift of perspectives that will have your emotions and allegiances running wild not to mention the fear and pressure you feel of different situations you will encounter. The story is not predictable at all and keeps going even when you think its about to end.

    Bad reviews:
Ignore the massive raft of bad reviews from people who are completely butt hurt that Joel dies and you can't be him anymore.

They talk about ellie's bad decisions - she is driven by grief, anger and revenge so would not be making logical decisions but ones driven by pain. It's a compelling and rewarding story arc filled with redemption.

Abbie is unlikeable - complete rubbish, your opinion will shift and she's a god damn bad ass. You will grow to love her and realise she was driven by the same grief and desire for revenge as ellie.

But Joel died - yes I was upset too, but his story had ended. He had a daughter again who he had saved. Stop being whiny and butt hurt!

The story is a mess - rubbish! I've never seen story telling like it. It's perfect. I'll admit, it can be a little slow in bits but the reward of the end of the game is perfect - just fantastic. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Three hours into the game and I wonder, " Why do I keep on playing this game ?" The reality - nostalgia . So, to summ it all up :

    A) Bad story

    B) Unlikeable main character - Not because she is a female or gay , but because she was written poorly . Her choices make no sense and she feels " blank " .

C ) Killing the only good written character , just so you can shuv another one in our faces. ( which was not even a good one... )

This is not the continuation of the story that most expected. To summarize the negative response (even the zero score reviews), players that feel let down enjoyed/loved the gameplay, graphics, and sound, but they hated the story - a story that they feel took a big dump on their beloved characters from TLOU 1 and that felt like an unnatural and unwanted continuation of the story. I disagree.

Let's start off with the negative. I played on survivor difficulty and tried to collect as many resources and collectibles as possible. This created a couple of extra hours of searching, which was extra tiresome at the beginning of the game. There is a lack of cinematics (story) in this section as well, which assisted in a sluggish start. Also, because of my playstyle, a game much longer than anticipated, started to feel veeery long.

What we all think is great is the gameplay, graphics, and sound. The game is incredibly rich in detail, with sound bits and animations that make the gameplay more alive and organic than any game ever before.

The story. I did not like it in the beginning. The flashbacks were first met with heavy skepticism on my part. While I was getting closer to the end, everything fell into place. In the very end, they accomplished extremely well at delivering a feeling that most negative reviewers hated - a feeling of pointlessness.

The story was a bold choice, and I love it and I love them for making it. Some feel like this "turn" was an unnatural continuation of the story, which is not an opinion I share. Seeing how the last game ended, I believe that the thematics of this sequel were the only way to move forward. The story is daring and brilliant, and they truly accomplished to make me feel very conflicted about the actions I had to undertake as my character in the game.

One important thing to note. Similar too many negative reviewers, I hate media that become political/ideological, because it never sells me something that feels/is true. This is not it. This is an exploration of violence, the act and the consequences. However, a solution is never forced upon us. We are just left with its inevitable devastation of the characters and societies in this post-apocalyptic world.

It is a unique story and a fantastic accomplishment to say something true about revenge and violence. No solutions delivered. The game delivers a story that feels more true to the human experience than most post-apocalyptic series or movies available.

I absolutely loved everything with the first game. But if you were hoping for some kind of happy twist or conclusion after how Last Of Us 1 ended or if you wish to see Joel and Ellie live happily ever after, despite all the murder in the first story - this is not the game for you.
This game picks up where the last game ended, deals with it, and forces you to see the bigger picture. If that sounds interesting - buy this game and prepare for feelings you did not expect.

Expand

I do not remember such massive deception from studios ever.
1st If we remember the first trailer The Last Of Us Part II | PSX 2016 Reveal | PS4 Pro (official Playstation Youtube channel) where Ellie sits and plays the guitar, and then Joel appears as a shadow (we see his image) well after this I personally and some other players were ready that Joel is/or will be dead. But how he will be killed was a question.
In The Last of Us Part II – Release Date Reveal Trailer | PS4 (official Playstation Youtube channel) we see a moment where Joel covers Ellie's mouth with his hand:
Ellie-What the hell are you doing here?
Joel-You think I'd let you do this on your own?
In game this moment is different:
Ellie-What the hell are you doing here?
Jesse-You think I'd let you do this on your own?
Druckmann played so rude, dishonorably on the feelings of players, fans of the first part.
    2nd
I don’t remember the politics of closing comments on official game trailers, official game posts, (I mean Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, Playstation, IGN) massively sent DMCA to authors, bloggers, editors on Youtube, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, Twitch, Instagram etc.
3rd I'd like to say thanks to ND team for gameplay, for graphics - you've spent so much time, you put so much efforts guys, you put a part of you to this game- thank you, that's a great job guys! And I want you to apologize me guys, coz for me personally, the plot of the game is the most important thing and it was ruined by your director Neil Druckmann.

    Excellent gameplay!

Of course it is not a perfect execution, but it is as close as I can imagine getting, while grasping so much, going into so many complicated topics, and doing it so subtly too in some cases. It is not for everyone to enjoy, but it is for those willing, to experience it. There can be a lot of things disagreed on in the story, many conversations started. And that is why I am glad this game exists. I hope people will be willing to dig deeper, and see what was done here. And over time allow this medium to reach its full potential, which proved by this game, is huge. Expand

    SPOILERS ALERT

I never wrote a review in my life, I never wanted to go on the internet and talk about a game or how a particular game changed me for better or worse. But this time I could not hold back the sadness that this game carries.

In the first game you build love between Joel and Ellie. I ask you now my dear player, if someone took Ellie from Joel, if someone dared to hurt Ellie, do you know what Joel would do? If you played the first game you know what he would do because he did what had to be done to save her, and in the second game he says to Ellie that if GOD gave him another chance to change things, he would do everything the same, exactly the same way, and with those words at the end of the conversation he is crying because he knows that he is not perfect but he loves Ellie and nothing else matters.

I know it, the fans know it, Ellie knows it because when Joel was already dead and Ellie was talking to Tommy, she said if it were any of them, Joel would already be halfway to Seattle to settle things. This game has no replay factor, do you want to play for another 30 hours watching Joel being massacred, tortured with golf club on his head? do you want to see people spitting in the face of Joel while he dies? Do you want to remember the face of Uncle Tommy after surviving a gunshot to the head asking for your help in your home while you refuse to avenge Joel? Do you want to see Ellie for 20 hours passing through the valley of the shadow of death feeling guilty for not forgiving Joel and the day she forgave him, the next day they kill him ?? do you want to see Joel's last scene being him crying ?? Want to spend another 10 hours playing with Joel's killer ?? Want to play a game where they lied in the trailers making animations that do not exist in the game suggesting an adventure between Joel and Ellie ???

The last of us part 2 founded its bizarre success on lies. Towards the end, the director still has the courage to take Abby and make her crucified, tortured, starving, having the skin practically leaving her body by being trapped in the sun in the middle of several bodies for when you arrive at your destination with Ellie and get her revenge, feel like **** and feel guilty about wanting to fight her. The fight starts with Ellie passing the knife several times on Abby's body, who doesn't have the strength to even stand, the director puts you in a position for you to feel trash and feel like a bastard even at the time of your revenge, keep putting flashbacks of Joel's disfigured face to create hatred and in the final scene you lost 30 hours and nothing happened, Ellie let Abby go and still lost 2 fingers, even the damn guitar she can't play anymore. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't find it right to kill Abby in those conditions, I wanted a fair fight between Abby in her ordinary state and Ellie in her ordinary state, Ellie calling the Joel's killer out of her boat and saying that it would end there once and for all. Have you seen john wick? Imagine him reaching the end of the film's story, after having killed hundreds of people, finding the killer who killed his dog and saying that he will let him go because revenge doesn’t lead to anything. The last of Us part 2 has no replay factor, unless you want to spend another 25 hours watching everyone you know die and in the end do not avenge the death of the guy who loved you most in all the last of us story .
So far, Uncle Tommy's face has not left my head in disappointment when he finds out that he can no longer count on Ellie.

Killing one of the most beloved gaming characters for pure shock value, then going into a quest of revenge killing tons of people along the way just to suddenly decide it's bad to kill and let the murderer go is completely idiotic.

CONS :The shock DEATHS, for example Jesse and Yara deaths they just leave me after the shock feeling like what I had done was for nothing. The first games had some of these as well
I think the pacing is really bad but I don t think I could've done it better or someone else for the story it is trying to tell. For example I would've done everything chronological but NO, we would've seen what Ellie is doing in 2033 then 2034 then 2036 then what happends a few days after that and then Ellie kissing with DIna and the rest so NO. You would've forgotten every of those moments by the end of the game. And those flashbacks actually have critical role for the moment they are put in. So now getting to the pros.
Pros: I think the story is very good overall. I don't think the main theme is revenge and is about forgivness and overall the good in humanity. A lot of people are mad about Joel dying either early either "stupid" or that he didn t have a hero death witch is just stupid he is an anti hero ffs, From what we know from the first game is that he only care about himself and the ones that he loves. I thought the first game forgot something but it didnt. The first actual scene where we can see that from Joel is right at the begining before Sarah dies, when he leaves behind a hopeless family in the street. So no I didn t have a problem with Joel not heroic death we still get a lot of momets between him and Ellie after and he wasn t stupid I mean it was too far for them to go back to Jackson and is not like those guys had a firefly band on them and not WLF. And NO there is no plot hole. Abby was actually searching for Tommy, Joel brother cause she knew he was in Jackson it is said in one of the flashbacks. BUT PEOPLE wheren't paying attention to that cause now we don t get to have a villain backstory cuz she just killed our main character ? Come on is just SO STUPID. So Ellie wants to get revenge and she goes and kills Abby's friends to get information about her location. In these moments we see how Ellie gets more comfortable with killing like Joel how his death had an impact on her, IT IS JUST SO GOOD. Then we get to see why Abby killed Joel and that her revenge on him left her with nobody cause now all her friends are dead. We also get some cute bonding moments between her and Lev. She goes after Ellie but she doesn t end up killing her or Dina when she looks at Lev. And Lev is the good part about Abby, he is the motive she tried being a good person. Then after two years at a moment when Ellie was with Dina at a farmhouse, Ellie decides that she wants to go after Abby again against Dina's opinion. She founds Abby but she didnt killed her cause she reminded THE LAST moment of her and Joel , and I dont know if it was intentionally but she was mad at Joel 2 years as she was at Abby. So after 2 years she finally says to Joel that she is ready to forgive him and that she will be seeing him arround. That moment absolutely broke me cause with was so sad. Thats why I think the game is about forgivness, because of Ellie s revenge she gets left with nobody, Abby gets all her friends killed. Joel who didn t care about humanity and murdered an entire hospital gets hated by Elllie. His death was even sadder that it was right after Ellie was ready to forgive him, I DON T GET WHY PEOPLE COMPLAIN IT IS BAD. The first scene of the game was actually Ellie's dream because she was ready to forgive him and that was a moment when they were in the middle of being close and disconected. I love how the guitar is a conection between them because of that first scene. The last scene actually left me thinking she was ready to leave the memories about him behind and get back to her life.
SO the story is very good, I don t need to talk about the combat cause is soo good the exploring is much better the graphics, the views
So my rating for The Last of Us Part II is 9,7/10
stop hating it cause Joel didn t die how or when you wanted. I feel like some people liked the first game and got the impression that now they know everything about writting. I can tell you that the first game had some bad **** in it as well, I mean Tess death doesn't serve other purpose other than for Joel to continue his journey with Ellie cause otherwise he wouldn't have done that. But then anyway he decides to let her with Tommy so yeah Tess death was just as Jesse and Yara death. Sam and Henry the same I mean it s sad and everything but even after seeing it has no impact in the final decision of Joel at the end at the hospital so yeah we can now ,if the user s socre say so, stay and find some bad **** in every video game rather than seeing what it's beautiful about them. Others just now found out that the characters are not the theirs, and the developer's

Still tho, it feels like many of those hours are spent on searching for collectibles and doesn't feel like real gameplay, besides the satisfaction of having the platinum, it could be Lil bit better if those collectibles provide actual gameplay, and not just walking around and kill 1 or 2 infected once In a while... Many of those artefacts were useless and did not provide anything important to the main story.
And maybe, just maybe could have been a Lil bit more of free will, like leaving the choice to the players who lives and who dies instead of just putting it in there as a cinematic, perhaps your ambition made you forget that this is a game and not a movie

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The great thing about this game is the way it puts question marks over right and wrong. The way you develop a sense of empathy towards characters that you could label 'good' but they could also be called villains.

Am I upset that I didn't get to see another story about Joel and Ellie? Yes.

But instead I got reality. Joel killed dozens of people who were potentially innocent, particularly the doctors. Its no surprise that he made enemies. You could even say he is a bad person, or just blinded by his love for Ellie, or just doing what most parents would do. There's an argument here for all sides. Which is why the playthrough of Abbey's timeline is so good. It opens up a bigger world of violence and death, and raises bigger emotional questions than the first game. It makes you question it all.

For me this game wasn't about Joel and Ellie. Nor Abbey and Ellie. Its about the bigger picture, the bigger questions that revolve around a world of hatred and violence.

Is it better than the first game? No. But its definitley a memorable title.

Ps. Everyone knew the gameplay would be amazing. So nothing new there.

As with all games I only review once I’ve completed and I’ve had time to reflect on the experience. I finished TLOU2 last night after 30 hours and WOW Naughty Dog, what an achievement.

On the gameplay front, as you’d expect it’s quite similar to the original game. You move from area to area avoiding or getting into conflict with the infected or human enemies. It’s down to you how you wish to proceed, stealth or guns blazing. But stealth is usually the preferred option to at least thin the number of enemies before you open fire. Resources are scarce so it’s not like you ever have lots of ammo to go all Rambo like. However, the gameplay mechanics are without doubt a step up from the original. Everything feels much more dynamic. Everything flows really well. It might sound strange to say but when you are running in this game you really feel like you are running for your life. Run, crawl under a desk, take cover behind a concrete pillar, flank your enemy, and dispatch! It’s all very seamless and hangs together beautifully. But that is not as easy as it sounds, as the human enemy AI is quite clever. They WILL flank you if you stay in one place for more than 30 seconds or so. The attention to detail is honestly amazing, probably the best I’ve ever seen. You can really see the care and effort that has gone into this game. Shoot someone in the head and they will go down as you’d expect and the blood spatter pattern would be as you’d expect.

Graphically there is not much to say here other than as you’d expect from a Naughty Dog game it’s up there with the very best, quite possibly the very best. It’s just a beautiful game. The sound design is phenomenal too. Guns sound and feel deadly when fired, and the in game music is top class. When graphics and sound this good are combined what you end up with is some of the best atmosphere setting in a game ever. One of my personal favourite sections was playing through the pitch black hospital at ‘ground zero’, I felt terrified the whole time. It was on par with how well the Resident Evil 2 remake sets the atmosphere. Bear in mind TLOU2 is not actually a survival horror game, yet it can compete with dedicated survival horror games due to its amazing ability to set atmosphere.

Contrary to many (incorrect) beliefs, the game is NOT pushing an agenda. It’s simply a story about revenge and the lengths we as humans are willing to go to get it. It’s a story about flipping perspectives and giving the player the opportunity to see both sides of the coin. In doing that you as the player actually bond with characters on both sides of the argument. And this is why it is so clever – because you bond with both Ellie and Abby, you become totally conflicted about the actions both of them take for each of their causes. The story is in my opinion brilliant. It could have been another jaunt through the world of the infected with Ellie and Joel but Naughty Dog made some bold decisions and chose to do something completely different – and it paid off. In parts it’s truly shocking, but I like that it shocked me. I had my hand over my mouth on many occasions – I can’t remember a game that made me react like that before.

I really only had ONE issue with the game, and that is sometimes the pace can be slow somewhat due to the large areas you spend time looting (although this isn’t actually forced and entirely down to you if you want to do it or not). However, the game would suck me back in again quickly with a defining story moment.

I can’t wait to fire up New Game+ on Hard+ mode just to experience this masterpiece again, but I’m going to put it down for now and give myself time to recover from being emotionally taxed for 30 hours. There wasn’t a single night I didn’t play this game since its release on 28th June. I’m truly exhausted.

I’ll end by saying this is one of the best video games ever made. If you are at all interested in video games this is a must play, no doubt. Masterpiece

Masterpiece. I love the plot that shows there are no villans or heroes and that almost every action comes with consequences. Also, going for the revenge might cost you everything.

For a heavily story-based game, none matters if the story itself is critically flawed. Not graphics, not gameplay, not mechanism, not sound effects. Not to mention that the gameplay of TLOU has not evolved much compared to the first tile, and that multiple bugs occured during my playthrough.

For anyone who wants to get this game most of the negative reviews are from people who haven’t even played an hour of this game and are dumping on it because it features Lesbian content. Personally this is literally the best game I’ve ever played

Metacritic blocked me to rate this game. Thats just terrible.

The game wants us to build empthy over a new character who brutally murdered people and brutally beat pregnant woman. This is just the worst story I have ever seen.

It seems like the ones that think this game is perfect never played the 1st game. How could they not think Joel killing was just F'ed up? They are just ignoring it like they never played the 1st game. Last Jedi anyone? Games like these are more about the story an character development less about the game play, an they decided to phone in the story/characters? Seriously?

The last of us 2 ist das grausamste Spiel das ich je gespielt hab. With no regrets! The Last of us 2 ist ein Gesellschaftlicher Spiegel. Oh mein Gott

I started by hating playing with Abby and then all starts to make sense.
The more i liked Abby the more i disliked Ellie, to a point i didn't know which one i wanted to "win".
The end was perfect to me, i was really against Ellie killing Abby, and then they "saved" Ellie.
Amazing job Naughty Dog, really curious about what you will do next, on PS5.

Almost every man in this game is depicted as a hollow shell to bring forth the liberal, progressive, feminist narrative which makes for a terrible gaming experience as it tries far too hard.

The political bias to the game, the rediculous russian hammer and sickle fight, the unnecessary trans character, the predictability of getting caught out by NPCs during cut scenes EURGHHH and the stupidly sterioded up arms of the antagonist, the poor facial expressions and narrative, it was all exhausting. The developers lied again and again in the build up to this game about not having to kill dogs, and that you'll only be playing as Ellie which is false all adds to a game that tries to bring nothing but shock value.

Couldn't wait for it to be over, I don't think I'll ever buy another Naughty Dog game again.

Last of us 2 как раз из таких. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
