I very much enjoyed the first The Last of Us. So much that I pre-ordered The Last of Us 2, which I rarely do. The one thing I could have done without is the companions. At best the help out on the rare occasion but mostly they just sit around and waste the good cover spots. Once they even pushed me out of cover in front of a very angry looking fella.

It's a technical masterpiece with very good gameplay and a polarising story.
I think that the themes and atmosphere of this are very much aligned with and build off the original. It's not for everyone for sure. The Abby section dragged on just a couple of hours too long for me. Especially since we left it on such a cliffhanger before that...
It questions your loyalties and offers differing perspectives. Each character is flawed. Some more than others. But ultimately the game left me feeling dirty, conflicted, emotionally wrecked, with a touch of acceptance to wrap it up. Not quite as stellar as the first, but damn near close.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The hatred of this game simply astounds me. Story aside, on the technical achievement this game is a 10/10. Looks and sounds fantastic, has a massive range of accessibility options too that you don't see in most games. The acting too is great. Great performance from the cast and solid directing.

Now the story, I played the first game 5 times (twice on Grounded mode) so I'm in a position to comment on it as someone who loves the story from the first. Spoilers ahead.

So Joel dies at the hands of a girl whose father he murdered at the end of the first game. His actions regarding Ellie at the end of the first game WERE extremely selfish, but understandable. Aside from that, we learned that he did some bad things in his past between the outbreak and meeting Ellie. He is the anti hero in a series about Ellie. This series was always about Ellie and here she takes the lead role. Does Joel die to early? Arguably. But the controversy surrounding his death is pathetic.

I like the way the game is split between Ellie and Abby. Playing as Abby opens up a whole new perspective in this world. She's part of a group that can be lethal when required, but also human in comfortable moments. The same as Joel and Ellie's new found group in Jackson.

Overall it's a great game. The faux outrage over it is downright pathetic. People need to grow up. Buy the game, try your best to ignore the hive mind of social media and make up your own mind. If you don't like the story that's ok, but the game itself is still great to play as the game play is fantastic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to kill Abby, and I did everything I could to kill Abby. But sometimes you learn about perspective. And you say “I am not Joel or Ellie or Abby. I am me. The reason why I love this game is because it doesn’t do what i want but does things I live with.” I didn’t want to kill Jerry. He’s just a doctor trying to save the world. I would have shot in in the leg or incapacitated him in a different way. But Joel didn’t want to do that. Joel wanted to make sure that this Firefly project would never be possible again. And he did that, betting his last bit of luck that when he burst through those doors, Ellie would still be alive — and she was. It’s hard to admit, but Joel won. Expand

    Graphics 10/10

    - I played the last of us 2 to play as Ellie, the Ellie portion of the game is fantastic and just when you are getting into it, you are then made to play as Abby.

    - I do not understand why Naughty Dog thought it would be a good idea to make you play half of the game as a character you severely dislike from the start.

A multiplayer portion of the game would have made the game more valuable and increased replay value.

The gameplay takes what worked in TLOU and expands it, and it’s animation system is by far the most smooth I’ve seen in a game. Whilst the game is not perfect, and not as straight forward as the first game (which some may not like), it gives you everything you could want from a sequel, and more. When Naughty Dog said they expected the game to be divisive, they weren’t wrong. Though don’t be put off by out of context spoilers, because context does matter, and when it’s all added up, it equals a well thought out, gut wrenchingly dark story, that many will find themselves enjoying. I can’t say you will agree with all the plot points of the game, but just go into it with an open mind, and see how you feel. Expand

This is a great game. But I can somewhat see the problem people have with it, aside from the childish trolling reviews.

    The mental transition from:

    A) hating a major character (and not wanting to be manipulated by the game)

    to

    B) accepting that you understand (not like) the character's motivation while seeing that (all) the characters – being blinded by hatred – just can’t act otherwise. And therefore the game doesn't give you the option to change their actions.

... that’s a highly risky way to tell a story. Especially with such beloved characters. But it's also a real sign of creative integrity and of a bold vision.

If the player can’t take this step of acceptance (a major theme of the game itself), the game fails. It will take you out of the immersion–which is so important to appreciate the game. That's why the story leak was a huge problem. The game needs context and the player needs to let the plot – and his own anger – sink in. It's a brilliant mechanism that mirrors the events of the game on a meta-level.

The game knows that the player is in a moral dilemma. And – if you let the masterful crafted world and characters sink in – it takes you on a cathartic trip (which doesn’t work if you are not willing to accept the story).

I applaud Naughty Dog for the brave decision to go with this. I loved how they got me to the point, where I went with the emotions of the characters EVEN knowing that this meant acting against my personal choices (that derived from my knowledge of the story as an external viewer). And that I, therefore, routed for the catharsis of all the protagonists.

Risky but (therefore) great storytelling, if you are willing to accept what the game is doing.

    - While hidden, AI is very predictable with their movements. All stealth games have this issue though.
    - Can't switch which side of the shoulder your camera is on, only while aiming you can.
    - The story is really slow in the bulk of the game and a bit lackluster.
    - Too much of the story felt like you was doing detours, like getting fuel or medical supplies.
    - I felt a lot of my time was looking for loot and it's like I needed to do it even though it got old.
    - The story going forwards and backwards in time too often hurts the pacing of the story.
= The story isn't as good as the first game and even though the graphics are better, the image looks horrible with the film grain. You can turn the grain off while in photo mode and it's sad because the game looks so much better with it off, It's such a shame. It's still a very good game, but it's not been able to grip me like the first one did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The atmosphere, graphics and audio are simply fantastic. You probably won't get much more out of the PS4 (Pro).

The fact that the ending isn't a happy ending and triggers so many strong emotional reactions from players shows how brilliant the game is. The developers deliberately play with the emotions of the players and get them out of their comfort zone. This also explains the many negative reviews of the players, who can't handle that. And I expect my review to be downvoted by the same people, but that’s okay.

It is certainly not a game for everyone, especially not for those who can only live with a good ending. But for those who can handle this kind of story, this game is unique except for some minor flaws and it is certainly one of the best of its kind.

I give some smaller point deductions for the skill system and the shooter mechanics.

The biggest surprise here is the gameplay, particularly the tense, frantic combat encounters. Play on high difficulty and don’t use listen mode — that’s how the game should be experienced. The stealth is the absolute best in any Naughty Dog game and perhaps my favorite in a big budget stealth game since MGSV. The open-ended design of the levels is both dense and expansive, naturally facilitating multiple play styles and keeping all of them engaging. Outside of the main narrative, of which there has been plenty of criticism (some deserved, some not), the actual world building and environmental storytelling are both top notch here. The LGBT characters generally steer clear of pandering and don’t virtue signal like, say, Steve in Mass Effect 3; regardless of what anyone says, the fact that one of the most frequently cited problems with the game is the inclusion of LGBT characters is, frankly, ridiculous, immature, and neckbeard to the extreme. What a silly thing to dismiss a game for, honestly. Expand

From the opening first 20min the game had me and when I beat the game I was in love with the characters, the story, and the world. 7 years later and I still love it and I was so excited about Part II.

Just like the first game, I downloaded Part II and was waiting for the game to unlock on my PS4. The game unlocked and I was finally playing the sequel to my favorite game of all time. I was so hyped and was so happy to be back in this world with these characters. The game looks so great and is probably one of the best looking games of all time (next to RDR2). As the story progressed I was happy to see where it would go and then it happened. The unforgettable act took place and I had no idea where the story was going. Based on the trailers I thought I knew where the story was going but I was wrong.

I accepted what happened and was dying to see what happened next. I played the story over the course about a week and was caught off guard so many times by the story, especially with a huge surprise half way through the game. I found myself rushing through the second half and stopped myself when I noticed. Upon completing the game I was unsure what I thought about the game. I LOVED so much about the game. The gameplay and combat is Naught Dog at its best! The animations is top tier and the acting is the best I've seen in a video game.

I thought about this game for days and finally realized that I actually really appreciate what NG did with the story. They could have done it safe and predictable but they didn't. The arc that Ellie and other characters go through is great. 90% of this game is about revenge, yes. However, the last 10% is a about redemption and forgiveness. While this game may not be what some fans expected, I feel this game will be remembered as revolutionary and ahead of its time a year or two down the road. I can't wait for my NG+ playthrough to see everything I missed during my first playthough.

    My final score: 8.5

If it wasn’t Abbys story, it could have been any one related to the other thousands of people massacres by Joel in part one.

This game isn’t perfect, but it tries something new and daring for a game of this caliber. It’s a shame the internet hate mob couldn’t get past the fact that there is lgbtq representation and a woman with large muscles. A compelling and challenging story,
Greatly improved gameplay from part one,
Next gen graphics on current gen system,
Stellar script, performances, sound design and direction. A beautiful game unfortunate enough to be attached to the wrong side of the internet.

If you play on PS5 graphics look much better & are on par to the PS5 version of TLOU Part 1. I played them back to back & they look virtually identical on PS5. Load times for Part II are longer. The story gets review bombed by the hate parade & that’s unfortunate. There were rumors & hate groups came out in force but ignore that stuff. Living with hate makes you miserable, sucks the energy out of you. This game is super fun & the TLOU universe continues with an outstanding story. I think most people dislike the game because it’s not the game they would have written & it makes them feel angry. I’d argue in this case it’s just good storytelling (trying to avoid spoilers here). It’s not always going to work but I genuinely had my feeling change as the story progressed. Let’s be clear & state that at the end I 100% understood the story. I was emotionally confused which in this case is a good thing IMHO. I wasn’t sure if I was angry or felt complete. Was a bit confused as to who I was angry with. Do I have new friends & family or enemy’s. The story is clear but my feelings were stirred up. The story made me think about many things & look at the characters differently. If you loved Part 1 for the story & the emotions it make you feel this game do that & more. Play the game with an opened mind & you’ll have a fantastic ride. Expand

The first TLoU game is one of the few games I've played through more than once. In fact I've lost count of how many times I've played it. Certainly more than any other. LToU 2 lives up to the original on all counts. At first I was a bit tentative about it. The first few hours felt like a bit of a rehash of the original in a lot of ways, but then the game shifted gears and took off. People hollering about plot holes need to use their imagination and understanding of the human condition. Nothing seems out of character. I think a lot of those comments are simply forced onto it to hide the fact that they've got some personal anti-sjw agenda. Why do they hide it.? Because they know, deep down, that they should be ashamed of themselves for being closed-minded hate mongers.

You need to understand that after the leaks a whole bunch of hateful people and trolls went all their way to harass the developers and ruin the game by spreading those leaks with both real and fake information.
I'm not saying the game is perfect 'cause I haven't even played it but I would ask you, reader, to go and see for yourself: Read the professional reviews, go watch some youtuber's gameplay videos, read the story from the wiki or trust your gut and buy it and ask for a refund if you hate it.
You know what's the story about so there's nothing about the tone that you would go blindly into. If the story, gameplay, violence or depictions that presents you aren't your thing, well, skip it.
All I'm saying is that you should give the game a fair chance 'cause for less than 24 hours since it launched, to have more than 5000 reviews it's just simply baffling.
I'll update this review (or delete this one and write a new one) when I get to play the game.
    Have a good day, everyone!

EDIT: After playing the game thoroughly I came with the conclusion that, in fact, it is quite good! The characters are really well-developed and the whole narrative takes a whole bunch of risks that, at least for me, pay off awesomely! And of course, the gameplay, man! The gameplay's so cathartically bloody you can't possibly want to keep up but something pulls you in right back at it.
I can understand why some people would flat-out despise the story, unfortunately, they fall in the majority of really mundane and superficial complaints (Ex. no. 1: Joel being "careless" like, man, it's been 4 years in which they pretty much show how much he went soft trying to reach an understanding with Ellie and his own experiences in a town like Jackson. Ex. no 2: The "woke agenda" like, you look immature by even using those terms, dude... And believe me, there's no "agenda" in this game. Things play out like in the real world and there is not even a single moment that allows you to go "ah! They showcase us, conservatives, as bad people!". Not even that, they're not attacking you).

Is this a perfect game? Probably no. Is the narrative flawless? Not really: There are certain moments that probably weren't too polished (a character death that plays more for cheap shock value midway through the game; the jarring change of pace by playing with a new protagonist midway through the game, as well) but overall I can overlook all of that with what we have here. All I could have wished for was for this game to have been longer than what it is, the extra time would have worked wonders (yes, I'm saying that about this 25-hour long game).

I can understand the hate. I can understand the love. It certainly deserves both: To be loved and hated in this much passion (but hating it doesn't give you rights to be an awful person and send death threats to the developers even if the game was not as "legendary" as you would have hoped for...)

Ironically, about a game about hate and empathy, the story bleeds out into the real world wonderfully.

It's 50/50 man, and I wish for the user reviews to remain like they are right now (at 5.3 overall), because that sums it up: People loving it for the wrong reasons and people hating it for ridiculous reasons. People enjoying it for doing a whole bunch of things right, and people hating it for doing things they didn't hope for.
Give or take. You might love this, you might hate this.
I ended up loving it, even when the game broke my heart in half and spat on it. But it was an experience that definitely moved me like nothing else in the gaming world. Nothing at all.

You may end up saying the story is trash, you may end up saying the story is one of the best narratives out there. For me is the second. The only way for you to find out is to play it. Maybe you'll agree with me, maybe you'll think I'm stupid.
Either way, I got something I wasn't prepared for.
And I loved every last one of those seconds.

There are a lot of heartwarming and sweet moments throughout The Last of Us Part II which balance the heavy subject matter perfectly. I liked that player gets to see games conflict from different points of view. Like in the real world, conflicts and opposing points of view are not black and white, there´s no clear bad guy or good guy. I don´t want to spoil the story, but lets just say that in the game, after being blinded by hate that sudden relization of the cost of ones choices hits hard.
Graphics are amazing and enviroments are astoundingly rich with detail. Story is great, it´s an emotional rollercoaster, it stays with you when you finish the game. Gameplay is exciting and in most cases keep you the edge of your seat.

Set in a hard world populated by hard people, there are no heroes here, only damaged people who do bad things in order to survive. The journey Ellie undertakes is one of revenge and anger, and the consequences of Joel’s decisions in the first game are core to the events of the sequel. The game is difficult to play, matching the trials the characters must endure. You’ll find yourself mentally exhausted, wondering when the hardships will end as you play. By the end you want it to be over, not because it’s a bad game but because the journey has been so difficult.

Is it perfect? No. However Naughty Dog has created an excellent story that tells of damaged people who will go to extremes to protect the ones they love, even if that means killing those loved by others. It’s sad, it’s difficult, it will probably bring out emotions as few games can, but it’s necessary to tell the story of past decisions that have consequences. Play it and enjoy the story, and don’t worry about those that dislike it for making tough choices.

People seem to have issues with the story, i however really enjoyed it. Like many others, I despised Abby at first for what she did to Joel. But through playing her, I grew to enjoy her character. To the point where I didn't want Ellie to actually go after her and let it go. Great writing overall. The only real gripes that I have with this game is that the combat could feel clunky at times, especially during boss fights or when hordes of infected rush you. And the AI didn't feel that great, especially friendly AI when you ended up in combat, or when you wanted to silently take down enemies alongside the friendly AI, which is done in more scripted sequences. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a tremendous achievement by Naughty Dog with the Last of Us Part II. Improving on the gameplay from Part I and amping up the cinematic elements has created one of the great swan songs of the generation.

While not quite as good aa the first game, there are many elements to this game that eclipse the first game. Larger environments, more playstyle options, interesting lore, and the continued emphasis on environmental storytelling means players get their money's worth. The game would be a 7 or 8 alone based on those elements.

The much maligned story isn't perfect, particularly with pacing. Naughty Dog would have been better suited re-arranging the days of Abby and Ellie to match up. Playing as Abby for the extended period of time was a nice touch, I just didn't like the placement in the game as much. We get to experience the life of someone who is really not so different from Ellie. In a different world, they may have even been friends. The interesting part of the story is that there truly isn't a "good guy" and "bad guy". Both characters are deeply flawed while also being very redeemable. Even up to the very end I was not sure who I wanted to live or die, and that's a testament to the writing and voice acting.

One other minor issue that makes this game a 9 instead of a 10 is that the game is perhaps 5 to 6 hours too long. This game would have benefitted from a slightly shorter playthrough to make it a more toght experience, but it's nowhere near the level of egregious as a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 in which the entire island sequence could have been cut out and the story would have been unaffected. These minor critiques aside, I highly recommend playing through this game. Its engaging gameplay and story about how revenge and hatred can consume a person's life make for an enjoyable experience that should not be missed.

I think in some areas, this game does fall short. At times, the story is forced into directions that the player wouldn't necessarily want. I can tell how Neil Druckman was trying to subvert the audience's expectations and I commend him for that because him trying to do something different is so much better than him just providing us a cookie-cutter, bland narrative. I felt myself relating to certain characters introduced in Part 2 and I wish instead of continuing to introduce new characters, Naughty Dog would've instead focused on a select few characters that I actually cared about. The structure of the narrative could've been better, but I appreciate what Druckman and his team were trying to convey. After spending about a week after I completed the game to think about the narrative, I've been able to think about how Abby and Ellie are on two sides of the same coin. It is definitely better than people are giving it credit for. Do not believe the intense hate that most online reviewers are giving it.
The gameplay in Part 2 is absolutely fantastic. The animation is seamless, the gunplay feels realistic and weighty, and the fighting is so brutal. Words do not give the game enough credit for the amount of work that went into this game. Just for the gameplay alone, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. To put it briefly, the game looks and feels perfect. The detailed environments are immersive and the character models are equally wonderful.

Do the graphics hit performance? Well, yes and no... anyone who played the Last of Us remaster on PS4 on a 1080p TV will be disappointed to learn there is no 60fps mode at all, you won't be able to favour performance over visuals even if, like me, you're using a Pro on a 1080p TV. That is a big disappointment, but it aims for 30fps and in my two play-throughs I can say with certainty that it rarely if ever deviated from that target. It was a solid experience throughout.
Next up, the sound design... it's simply breathtaking, the audio is phenomenal throughout the entire game, from the ambient sounds of nature to the visceral sounds of clicker and humans being killed, a real treat for your ears, especially if you wear headphones while playing games.

Well, this is where the game has me on the fence... the fighting and the stealthing is great, the game has tight controls although at times finicky because of the lower framerate making aiming and target acquisition slightly harder if you're used to playing at high framerates on PC for example, but other than that aiming and moving feel great, the main downside with the overall gameplay is how often there's a very very pretty but largely empty corridor or area to explore, it's gorgeous no doubt, but the world feels at times unpopulated and empty, sure, that could very well be by design as it is post apocalypse, but first and foremost it's a game, and there was at times, nothing going on. While contrary to that, the times when the action did pick up, WOW.. Some of the most intense scenes I've played in a "triple A" titles in recent memory.
Finally... The story... what seems to be a major point of contention for some people... Let me start by saying this, the story is simply amazing, it's gripping, it will challenge the way you think about your protagonists. I would advise you don't listen to the loud minority of people complaining, they don't like the story and that's fine, that doesn't mean the story is badly written... because it isn't at all, the story is genuinely incredible and an amazing addition to Joel and Ellies story from the first game. There is a lot of emotions involved in this sequel, you will be angry, you will be sad. THAT IS THE POINT, this game isn't afraid to do things on its terms, it's refreshing to play a game with a story that quite frankly is difficult to absorb rather than pandering to fan service, I am upset that the story went this way, but I am upset in a good way, the way Naughty Dog intended. Quite frankly, I am still thinking about the story and everything days after I got the platinum trophy, it was a rollercoaster from start to finish.

So... why a 9? Why not a 10? Well, while the story was genuinely really really very good, it went on too long. There were at least two points the game could have ended and the story wasn't as tight as it could have been, the story they wanted to tell could have been told far tighter, I was frustrated at times because of how much back-and-forth they did, the overall story was still after all said and done, simply amazing, but how it was presented needs work, I feel like if it was edited better it would even better than the first game, but it's just a little too long in the tooth and messy how it is right now. I don't think there was a single character or moment in this game that felt off, or I didn't like. It's one of the most finely crafted video games I've ever played, it's just a slight shame the presentation of the narrative falls a little short and we have to endure that 30fps cap instead of having an option for 60fps.

I do hope Metacritic removes these stupid 0 reviews, anyone giving this game a 0 needs to rethink their lives.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a great achievement in games but it is not perfect. This kind of game shows the problems with review score inflation. Most AAA games are far below The Last of Us Part II in scope and quality and yet gaming review sites and users will dole out 7, 8, and 9 out of 10 like every game with a $50M or greater budget is a masterpiece. Most games are not that good. The Last of Us Part 2 is.

Narratively, this game is an epic. The story goes all over the American west and from different perspectives. There was a time when this game could have been sold as two beefy 13 hour campaigns. For better or worse, gamers expect longer campaigns and studios are delivering. This game took me 26 hours to finish and none of it felt padded. Like a Rockstar game or The Witcher 3, every segment felt meaningful.

My problems with the game are the controls and the abuse of cutscenes and scripted events. The controls are simply awful. The game settings have a few auto-aim options and I should have selected them. Aiming feels terrible and I often reloaded a save because I couldn’t make easy headshots. At one point in the game, an NPC tells Ellie that Ellie is the best shot in city. If that’s true, then everyone else must have the accuracy of Star Wars Storm Trooper. Selecting weapons and reloading could also have been easier. The odd controls include pressing the right trigger to reload and can only fire a gun while holding the left trigger to aim. In 26 hours of playing the game, the obtuse controls never felt intuitive.

The game has every trope from every forced cutscene that has ever been in games. The player character will be grabbed when you open a door or crawl through a small space. It happens about a dozen times and you might think the player characters would go start to go through gaps with their guns pointed. There is a horror game quality that necessitates a few jump scares but none of them are scary when they happen ALL THE TIME! There are also times when you know that an enemy cannot be defeated because they are an essential character. An experienced, cynical gamer such as myself will not waste their ammo on scripted events.

The overall story is good and I do not want to spoil it, but the story depends on the characters never telling each other the whole story about anything. The entire game could be over before it started if certain characters said “I am _____, from ______, and I am mad because _______ did _______.” Instead the motivations of the characters are dangled before us as some kind of emotional mysteries. Again, as an experienced cynical gamer, I see these things immediately and grow a bit frustrated with the player characters.

Last point on the story, Ellie is a toxic codependent personality and I do not like her or support any of her decisions. She gives her friends ultimatums and uses their affection for her against them. All of her decisions are selfish, no matter how petty her goals. Her friends are codependent enablers. Good people and doggies die because their toxic relationships with each other. The player is given no choices to alter the narrative. You cannot redeem Ellie. This story is a tragedy and you have to play it out.

All in all, The Last of Part 2 is a game of the year contender. While I do think this game has endemic issues of an industry that defines a “survival game” as a game bad controls and frustrating scripted events, the game is meticulously designed with a giant scope and many, many wow moments.

From a technical standpoint this is probably the best game you can get on a parting system like the PS4. It runs smooth for the most part, looks absolutely stunning and was developed with so much love for detail, that I quite literally spent half of my playtime just investigating every little corner and inch of the game.
Gameplay is good, but not perfect. The encounters are more versatile than they were in older Naughty Dog games, but you can still tell that it was made by the same people, that did Uncharted 4 for example. However, combat is intense especially on higher difficulty and the feeling of accomplishment when you cleared a difficult area without wasting all your ammunition and items is definitely there and very rewarding.

The story is I believe what most people criticised the most. Yes it's not perfect, yes there were a few parts where I strongly disagreed with the actions and decisions of my character, but guess what, this is not an open world, sandbox RPG, it's a story driver "adventure" where I don't get to decide what people do and feel. Furthermore, this game manages like hardly a game ever before to make me believe I'm watching actual real human beings. Human beings that are flawed and sometimes naive and dumb - but real. And I'm really thankful for this experience!

Why not a perfect 10/10 then? Well, for once the game felt a little too long. It took me a bit over 30 hours for the first playthrough and I believe it would be even more intense, if this number was down by a couple of hours. The gameplay was like I said before good, but not quite perfect. And - similar but not nearly as bad as the Uncharted games - the ludonarrative dissonance is quite strong in this game.

So if each part of my impressions was weighted the same, I would probably rate this game as a 7 out of 10, but since I think not every part is evenly imported and the overall impression left me simply speechless, I'll give it a 9 out of 10.

With the new movement and actions, a new way of moving through the scenarios was created, although little used the way of throwing cables could have generated very interesting puzzles.

As for the story, I understand the motivation of the characters and how each one arrived in this emotional state, however the best story was on account of the secondary Lev and his sister.

Apart from the monster session on launch - I completed the game in 2-4 hour sessions and took me a week.

It’s hard to put into words how this game made me feel once the credits rolled - Without spoiling anything all I can say is it will drain you. A constant emotional rollercoaster that some people will not enjoy - but for me it was something that I’ve never felt after playing a game.

Gameplay is nothing but a pure masterpiece for me - it’s improvements to a game so beloved that I didn’t think they could get much better than Part 1.

Story wise it was a decent - Not something I’m completely happy with, but I’m glad developers don’t make games just for fan service.

I look forward to playing this again in the future - but for now I would recommend this to many, with a warning that you may not like how you feel after each session. This is something that I appreciated from the game - I play games to get lost in a world and escape normal life, but I’ve never played a game and come out with so many thoughts still lingering in my head.

It's essentially a character study. I grew to love the characters and understand what motivates the, and keeps them going.

Graphically, the game is one of the best things i've ever seen. Sound design is top notch. The voice acting and animation, top notch.

Gameplay wise it was a vast improvement over the first one. movement was smoother, combat was visceral. It was fun to sneak around, or just start tossing everything when things got crazy. I loved finding the notes and listening to your companions which fleshed out the story and characters even more.

I did have issues with the pacing at times but overall it kept me wanting to keep playing, just to see what happens next.

I will say this, while I did play the Last of Us 1, i don't have the same attachment to the characters that i know some people, including my friends had. I had no "headcanon" of what I wanted out of the story for part 2 and was just excited to experience the story that the developers wanted to tell. I understand that this story, is not going to be popular with everyone, Some may even hate it, and that is fine. Everything I wrote is my personal opinion.

Sorry the game isnt all rainbows and sunshine, if that is what you want stick to Crash Bandicoot or Mario Kart. The game is dark as it should be. The butt hurt over the death of Joel is laughable. It was inevitable he would die. Ellie being gay was known from the first game if you paid attention. Gameplay is much like the 1st game so easy to pick up and play. The story is great if you simply put your fanboy butt hurt away. This game is everything I hoped it would be. Accept it for what it is, a dark brooding game set in a world where everything could kill you including other humans, exactly what would happen in real life in this setting. It was exhilarating as it was exhausting.
It is AI at its pinnacle, the stealth mechanics are the best I have ever seen and I've played a lot of stealth games over the years.
The game does get a bit repetitive and every so often I get the 'oh, here we go again' feeling; stealthing an area of humans then progressing to the next section and having to deal with the infected, but its just so good and rewarding it really doesn't matter.
The narrative is, sadly, your typical revenge story shown from two sides of the same coin, but it really, really well done and yes I empathised with both lead characters and ended up really liking the new lead.
There are a number of reasons why this is not a 10/10. First, its not as good as the original, second it wasn't necessary, third, it runs far, far too long, the difficulty spikes at certain points are an example of poor QA. Don't get me wrong, I asked for it on Grounded but running round in circles trying to escape 2 shamblers, a couple of clickers, some runners and whatever else they threw at me just wasn't my idea of a good time.
    Now, the social commentary.
Ellie's reveal was expected but the bombshell dropped in the 3rd act is box ticking at its finest. Addressing this... situation, in a video game, brings nothing to the story and doesn't enhance the game at all.
I personally believe Naughty Dog wanted to be "industry leaders" by overtly addressing this theme in, what was inevitably going to become one of the biggest games of the decade. It was a marketing ploy, nothing more.
Its as if in order to justify the horrific and gratuitous violence throughout the game, which effectively is a "Murder-sim" (You remember Manhunt don't you?) the impact of the violence would be lessened, or glossed over by shining a light on this particular societal phenomenon.

The Last of Us Part II is a game that deserves the praise it is getting from critics.

They are boring, uncharismatic, flat and forgettable, and are introduced poorly, doing something that is going to make you hate them and just after that it tries to humanize them in a flashback/plot twist that you think it's going to take an hour or less but it takes like 10 hours. So you don't take too much attention to them and don't care about them, because you want to know what happens after the cliffhanger that happens just before this long flashback. I mean, this part isn't bad but it may have been better if way shorter or shown most of it in another place of the game, altering the current order of the game. And something that isn't good or bad, but just a personal opinion: I don't understand why they took such an effort to make ugly all an unattractive the new female characters specially when compared to their actresses.
Other than, every other thing of the game is really awesome. Really awesome in terms of visuals, gameplay, animation, cinematics, IA, action, stealth, etc.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Its not perfect but a great game I enjoyed it for the most time. I hope there will be more in the future. I mean there is still much to learn about what happens to the people that survived.

Gameplay: Mostly builds on the somewhat barebones stealth mechanics of the original. Zombie encounters are still kinda meh but human encounters are lot more fun.
Presentation and graphics: Almost flawless. Some of the best on the system.
Story: Not as consistent as the original, but still a pretty good story. Understandable why some people didn't like it, but I loved it. People seem to

Overall - a great farewell to the PS4 system, the way the first game was for the PS3. Gameplay and graphics are better than the original. Story not quite as good, but still pretty good.

I thought I'd actually play and complete the game before posting a review. The gameplay is excellent (but linear). The story is probably the area that most divides people. It is a challenging and brutal tale that sometimes leads you in directions you don't want to go. But the benefits of walking in another person's shoes are tangible. Verging on a masterpiece, I'd rate it very good indeed.I thought I'd actually play and complete the game before posting a review. The gameplay is excellent (but linear). It many not be my personal GOTY (there are heavyweights launching later) but I suspect it'll be a close runner-up. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
