I have beaten this game more than 10 times and will play more. There are not a lot of decent single-player games with this attention to detail and with no greedy microtransactions and broken everything (hello EA). The gameplay is fantastic, and the story is not as good as the first game, but it is still one of the best.

I never leave reviews for games, but the reception that 'The Last of Us Part II' has received gives me much incentive to share my opinion. This game, to me, is a masterpiece; and that is the case for many people. However, it seems that just as many people view this profoundly impacting game as nothing more than a disappointment.

It is my opinion that many of the criticisms these people pummel at this game actually have very little thought behind them. Now, you are allowed to like and dislike what you please - there is no problem with that - but the lack of understanding (present within the majority of negative reviews) of things as simple as what this game is about, suggests to me that many people have not bothered to think about this game with an open critical mind; they have simply seen their favourite creators criticise it, and have actively looked for reasons as they play to have the same opinion. In fact, this lack of understanding is so dumbfounding, that I would not be surprised if some of these scathing reviewers have not even played the game.

Many criticise the game for being a 'bland' story about how 'revenge is bad'. These people have missed the point. Revenge is a secondary theme in this game; the narrative is largely about obsession, regret, and perspective. It is a complex story, and all of these themes work together to create an intricate commentary on the nature of humankind; Naughty Dog presents how easy it is for humans to grow too attached to the people and beliefs that they care about, and how they begin to base their very actions and morals about their perceived importance of such people and beliefs; one person's loved one could be another person's worst enemy, and - when they attempt to accept and understand this fact - they can start to lose their mind. The game's central characters each play a part in presenting this idea to the player; think of how many people Joel murdered in the first game. Whilst Ellie views him as someone special, it makes a lot of sense that others would loathe him for what he did.

But this is not all that Druckmann and his team do to convey this message - they do more. They do, perhaps, the most daring thing they could possibly have done.

They drag us into the fray.

Characters - that we once loved and thought were heroes - become the enemy, as we are forced to play as someone that hates them to their very core. This allows us to relate the game's message to ourselves; perhaps the people WE love are hated by others? It is a chilling thought that attempts to induce empathy in us; it's a thought that is masterfully taken from Naughty Dog's post apocalyptic USA and driven right home to the player, who is given the same task that the game's central characters must overcome; accepting and understanding their worst enemy.

These are the ideas that Naughty Dog explores - not the idea that 'revenge is bad'. Yes, revenge is presented as being bad; but that is not what the game is about. Similarly, in the first game, the infected are presented as 'bad', in that they kill you if they drain your health; however, this is not the game's central theme - the true central theme has nothing to do with the infected, as it is about the love between Ellie and Joel. It sounds like a silly comparison, but it is - indeed - very silly to truly believe that this game's message can be summed up as 'revenge is bad'.

The Last of Us Part II is a must play. I have not touched on the gameplay, graphics design, music, or anything other than the story. Pretty much everybody believes that these other things are brilliantly executed, myself included. I simply wanted to talk about the game's narrative, as this is what most of the discourse regards.

However, what I will touch on - before I conclude - is how representative this game is of many different communities and cultures. It is very inclusive, in ways that made me smile - for example, there is a trans character who appears two-thirds of the way through the game, and becomes integral to the plot. I have never before played a game that is at all representative of the trans community. It's truly amazing. We have finally been given a glimmer of hope for the future in terms of how people are represented in the media.

(Sidenote: I have a hunch that bigotry may play a part in why this game is so hated. Of course, I can never truly know what goes on in other people's minds; but, considering that games like Assassin's Creed II - which is about a white sexist man, and DOES present a bland revenge narrative - are considered to be really good, it begins to present itself as a possibility.)

I truly think that, if you have not played this game, you should give it a shot. There are many twists and turns, and - from the opening shot of Joel scrubbing his guitar, to the closing credits - there were many moments that brought genuine tears to my eyes.

This is one of the best games ever made.

    Have a nice day! x

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is no doubt that this is a masterpiece. The game play is fun and intense, most of the characters are memorable and acting is extremely good. The game also looks awesome. In my opinion this was a perfect showcase of how we humans can be absolute monsters as well as loving and caring at the same time.

Most of the "bad" reviews seem to think that the plot was bad. I am personally very happy that naughty dogs did not play it safe but instead created a bold plot that makes you feel sad. Last of us I was not a happy story and neither is this. This story will definitely leave you feeling empty afterwards, but that is not a bad thing.

In one review somebody criticised that the massive amount of violence felt unnecessary. I would say that might be exactly the point the game wants to make.

This game is what separates a mere game from a work of art. Simply a masterpiece. It improves the already great The Last of Us I in every way possible. The story is deeper and more mature, the game play is absolutely perfect, the level design is great, the acting is the best I've seen so far, and the graphics just don't make sense in a PS4 game.

I have beaten this game 3 times already, and will definitely play it again in the future. Which is really rare for me, when it comes to story-driven games.
The fact that TLOU2 has a 5.8 grade in metacritic as I write this review is something I cannot comprehend. It only shows how part of the game community is simply not ready for a game like this. 10 out of 10 without a doubt

Anyone who hates him is emotionally immature and only acts out of emotional anger and follows the herd. that the game came out and before it came out it was a trend to hate it. People hated him just from the leaks and thought this whole game was pro-gay because that's what the leaker told them. which is not true. Then YouTubers saw it was a trend to hate him so they made hate videos before he even came out. Got a lot of views. And made more people who didn't play it hate it. I absolutely love this game! i really don't understand how people don't like it, but for me, it's a 10/10. from the incredible grafic to the incredible story (which is taken perfectly by the view of Ellie and Abby). not to mention the character development that every character has. Like Ellie, that in the ending gives up on killing Abby. then, people say that Naughty dog implement a lesbian couple, retaining it not necessary for the plot. Why? can't two lesbians love each other in a videogame, while two straight people can? then, the death of Joel was necessary for the plot. i am really sad still today that joel died. but to make the plot go on, people die. this time it was joel's turn to pass away. maybe if a The Last of Us part 3, if it'll release, the game will tell us that maybe Dina died. or maybe Tommy. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah the last of us part 2 had the best story I've ever played, it was an amazing game, if Ellie killed Abby she would have made the same mistake joel and Abby committed, as Abby's revenge didn't fix any if her personal problems going on internally and externally, in top of that ellies story mirror's nathan drakes pursued of treasure as nathan drake puts the people he cares about in danger for worthless treasure, in the end nathan leaves tge treasure in the past in order to care about his family, just like ellie leaves her revenge nehind. Abby's story mirror Joel's from the last of us part 1, the story starts with losing a loved one and growing as a person after meeting a little kid that sufferes from external and internal problens as lec lost his sister and ellie lost her best friend before meeting joel. Ellies decision in the end shows growth and selflessness as she acknowledges that every person makes decisions based on circumstance and how Abby has so much in common with joel and she would be committing the same action Abby committed that affect ellie in the begging of the second game. Joel's decision in the end of part 1(2013) serves as an opposite to Peter's decision in the end of Marvel's spiderman(2018). It is all about putting other people's circumstances into consideration abd growing as a person and lifting your self abd the people around you rather than harming the world you were brought into. Killing has consequences, and he paid for his mistakes in a brutal, unforgiving way. Such is the world of The Last of Us I and II. The game is very good. I didn’t agree with all aspects of the story, but I can appreciate it all the same. On a technical level the game is 10 out of 10. Stunning. The only knocks that bring it to an 8 for me are the Seraphine storyline which I found drug on WAY too long. In general, the 3rd act is just way too long. And the violence. Oh, yes, the violence. I don’t actually mind it too much because it does fit the narrative for the most part. But I did find some spots where the game was just ghoulishly violent for the sake of it, not that it fit the story well at that point. And for that I will knock a point off. But all in all, Naughty Dog’s “very good” game is still better than almost any other studio’s best efforts. They are just that good and TLOU2 is no exception. It’s a very good game that fails to quite live up to the sublime first installment, but that doesn’t make the game a 4 like so many other idiots here are rating. Grow up, people. Expand

Go get the game! I’m not a fan of the genre but ND just created a benchmark for anyone who doubts what a VG can deliver, so kudos to them. I can see why it’s a 10/10 everywhere just not perfect for me due to the slowish gameplay which again is personal taste.

This game has stuck with me for a couple weeks now. Just incredible work. It's not a 10 because there are some specific points where the pacing falters a bit and one of the key relationships isn't fleshed out quite as well as I think it should be, but my god what a bruising, jaw-dropping piece of storytelling overall. The enemies are more intellegent to compliment the new combat. I would reccomend Hard mode for the first playthrough, unless you want to play for the ambitious story, then normal will suffice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The technical aspects of the gameplay, mechanics and graphics of TLOU2 are fantastic, and just like I had hoped. I love the scale and versatility of the level design in the combat encounters, and how you are able to use it to your advantage.

    10/10

In terms of storytelling, this game is all over the place. I like the overall plot, but the execution could (should) have been better, especially after what Naughty Dog did whit TLOU1.
Part 2 is in desperate need of editing, where length, phasing and momentum all leave room for improvement.
The game is too long. TLOU1 proved that you don’t need a 20+ hour game to tell a captivating story, and develop great characters you fall in love with. This issue could however be mitigate with better phasing and momentum. There were tons of emotional moments, both in-game and in cut scenes, that made me feel everything from happiness to rage and loss. But there were also big sections of the game, where I felt frustrated by the downtime, and just wanted the next story-beat or more enemies to fight. It is here the level design becomes a double-edged sword.
When there is no one to fight or no puzzle to figure solve, the levels turn into big empty places where you walk around searching for scraps, ammo and pills, to make sure you are prepared for your next encounter. Even though Naughty Dog has made an amazing and beautiful world full of small details, this does become tedious after a while, when you are traveling through the world alone.
This breaks the phasing of the game, and takes away the focus from the story, which I through multiple playthroughs of TLOU1 never struggled with. In TLOU1 you are always experiencing the game, either through dialogue, puzzles or a cut scene/transition that throws you into a new scenario.
Maybe this becomes less of an issue on a second playthrough, but for now, it is one of my biggest negatives. If you experience the same thing, I recommend turning on enhanced listening to scan for items. This helps, without becoming a solution.
One of my favorite elements of both TLOU games is the in game dialogue between you and you companion. This could have been a solution for these sections, as it is the case for the Downtown level of Seattle Day 1, where Ellie and Dina are riding around joking and talking about what they see. The same goes for when you as Abby are making your way through the city with Lev, and they talk about the The Seraphites and why Lev and Yara are on the run. These are some of my favorite character development and world building moments, the same way how Joel says he has been on both sides of the ambush in TLOU1.
Another way Naughty Dog could have trimmed the game down is when you take over as Abby. It killed the momentum for me, because it felt like I was starting a new game. Even though it doesn’t make sense for you to upgrade Ellie’s abilities, I understand why it is there, as it gives the player a sense of progression. It is however 100% unnecessary when you play as Abby, a character who has trained for years to become a perfect killing machine. It feels like padding, and could have streamlined the story if you didn’t have to start from scratch. My solution to the Seattle levels with Abby is to give us a few skills to upgrade, and cut those chapters by 30%.

    6/10

Even though I miss a lot of Ellie’s personality from the first game, I get that she has grown, both in age and through life. There are a lot of characters to love and (love to) hate in this game, often even the same character simultaneously. The story does a good job of fleshing out the main characters motivations, and it made me both and hate and empathies with their acts and decisions.
The death of Joel made me hate Abby (as I was supposed to), but I did not get mad at the game, because I expected that the story would explain her actions, as it did. I like Abby as a character, and I liked playing as her.
I can easily imagine a full game where you play as a girl, whose father is about to save humanity, but is needlessly murdered by a madman, who acts out of selfishness. (Ellie even tells Joel that he did the wrong thing. He even knows this himself, which is why he lied about it at the end of TLOU1)
It is the reason why the games is called TLOU Part 2.

Whenever I hear people talk about negatives about TLOU1, they often mention the David fight, which is also my biggest negative about that game. But they did it again, only in an even more grotesquely annoying way. The showdown between Abby and Ellie in the theater is the only part of the game I hate, and I am not looking forward to play it again. It is luckily only one out of many scenes that are full of sweetness, love, heartbreak, horror and action, my favorite being the museum with Joel and Ellie.
The set pieces are impressive and really good at creating the right atmosphere the levels/chapters need to support the story.

    Final score 8.5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It took me a few weeks but I finished this, as hopefully all who reviewed the game did. This was a great experience. I won't say it's "fun" or that I "enjoyed" it, but not all story telling is designed around glee. They did an excellent job with the characters and their motivations. I can see why some fans would be upset, but frankly I disagree with that notion. Spending hours playing as Abby, knowing how it ends for her friends I still found myself getting invested, to the point where when it was time to check back with Ellie I was surprised by how villainous she looked from Abby's side of the conflict.

I'm eager to see more of both Ellie and Abby later. They were both right and they were both wrong and I think that's good story telling. I understand why Ellie stopped at the end. Violence and vengeance is never done and you have to break that cycle somewhere. You have to maintain a little bit of humanity.

One mark off for the story feeling a little dragged out in parts, but I'm glad I spent weeks playing it instead of days.

Like its predecessor, it was released on the final leg of the console and here, Naughty Dog pulls all the stops: stupendous graphics, great production values and updated game play mechanics. Obviously, it's a must have yet be warned, LOU 2 approaches the apocalypse in a very dour and realistic manner, and it is not a feel good game in any way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is a game that I was eagerly counting down the days as The Last of Us is my favorite game of all-time. Unfortunately the game has received some of the most insane pre-release hate that tainted the experience for me. The amount of hate and accidentally being spoiled for a few key moments had me thinking of that instead of focusing on the game.

I understand why the people who hate Abby for her actions, and not due to bigotry, would hate her and hate playing the game. I didn't enjoy playing as her even though I understood what Naughty Dog wanted to accomplish. I didn't particularly care about her story arc, but I did appreciate Naughty Dog tried something that they had to have known would be controversial.

I think that the concept of bringing to light the duality of actions between Joel and Abby was a brave attempt given the amount of love that Joel and Ellie received after the first story. The story wasn't what I wanted, but I understand their decision.

Graphically this is the best game that I've ever played. It looked and ran incredible on my PS4 Pro connected to a Vizio M558-G1, I was constantly in a state of awe at what Naughty Dog accomplished with regards to this. The audio design was equally fantastic. In terms of gameplay, Naughty Dog also exceeded my expectations by increasing the quality of the level design, and made encounters more fun than before. I applaud them for that.

For those who read this who genuinely played this game and felt betrayed, I understand. If you're reviewbombing without ever having played it, find a better use of your time.

I intend to replay TLoU2 next year once all of the nonsense surrounding it has finally settled down. It's a fantastic game even if I don't agree with the story decisions fully.

Truly a great game. The vast majority of the negative reviews are from day 1 and are for all the wrong reasons. Not all negative reviews fit this bill; I appreciate the critical reviews for those that actually put an effort in.

You will see a few points of reasoning from the other folks (or bots) posting negative reviews:

    - The Gameplay hasn't evolved.
Yes, it's true that the gameplay is similar to that of TLOU1 but isn't that the reason we fell in love with the first game? I had a blast with the game mechanics and systems and never felt as though they were dated.

-The Story is Awful/They destroyed the characters we loved!
The story is not awful, there is an incredibly dark theme to this story that is upsetting folks. It shows a side to Joel and Ellie that people don't want to believe. Just because a story doesn't have a happy ending, doesn't mean it's bad

And then you have those that criticize the game because the protagonist is a lesbian. There is no reason to battle that as those that see this as the reason a game is a disaster is a bigot.

Anyway, what do I think of the game. It's a must buy in my book!

Graphics & Sound: 10/10 - Absolutely gorgeous graphics from the character animations to the environment themselves. The soundtrack as well was brilliant. I truly felt engrossed in the world.

World Design: 10/10 - Level design is second to none as this game feels like an open world while it is actually "on rails". It makes you feel as though you are making the choice of the path as opposed to being guided. It allows for exploration and each level feels unique.

Gameplay: 8/10 - TLOU2 maintains nearly identical gameplay with its predecessor with some added features such as guitar playing and a jump ability. The controls do at times feel a bit clunky and hence the detraction

Story: 8/10 - If you are expecting or wanting a tale of hope and optimism that the predecessor left us on, this is not what you will get. You will get a bloody story of revenge with an incredibly dark theme. There were a couple of plot holes that could not be overlooked but overall a solid story.

Overall Recommendation: 9/10 - Play the game, form your own opinion because I can guarantee you it is heaps and mounds better that the user score shows. That is of course if you aren't afraid of seeing two females kiss.

This game was amazing, its not Last of Us 1 but its has its own journey its own story its own character development. Don't listen to all the view bombers who watched YouTube content creators give their opinion then they came here to quote the exact words of the content creators. At least rent the game and give it a shot for yourself.

This game is a messy work of art. The gameplay is more refined and more brutal. The accessibility is second to none. I still recommend to pick it up. if you're hesitate then wait for a sale.

I dont understand the hate this game is getting. Overall last of us part 2 is a great game. I agree the decisions NG made regarding the narrative were controversial, but for the most part they were executed well. Graphics are gorgeous, audio and music are some of the best i have ever seen, game play though similar to part 1 was still enjoyable

Amazing Game and outstanding experience. Do not know what people rate it so low. Plot is full of twists, great characters and unpopular decisions which make this title one of the best Games in Playstation.
    Great job Naughty Dog !

While I agree this game is definitely not perfect, the current 5.6 user score is simply absurd and does no favour to our own credibility (users) when we rate '0' a game that has so much talent dropped into it. The technical and artistic aspects of the game are simply top of the industry and in this regard improves the first part, leaping to a next level facilitated by the advancing technology applied to games (and probably a bigger budget too?).

Playing this game is a gripping and highly enjoyable experience, even if the excess of blood and extreme violence kinda feels a bit unnecessary in some of the fights.

The gameplay felt too similar (almost clonical) to the first game, which is not necessarily a criticism, as I find it to be well balanced, challenging and fun. So why should you change something that works great?

My biggest criticism is the story and character decisions/motivations. As mentioned in many other reviews as far as I could tell, I found the 'revenge above all' motivation too simplistic, repetitive, predictable and even anti-climatic. It's an extreme survival world where I would expect people to focus a bit more on self-preservation with the minimal means they have, and avoid any unnecessary injuries etc as much as possible, as hospitals or doctors are not particularly available... however, we find ourselves constantly forced to put our character in extreme peril just to seek vengeance or something like that... It's a non-essential task most of the time, highly capricious at times, that made it difficult for me to really engage with what we were doing or why we are crossing (again and again) the city side to side just to ask for someone who might know someone, who might lead us to someone who hurt our friend months ago.
When in the original Fallout I'm asked to leave the bunker to search for a highly critical and necessary water filter system that stopped working, I felt the reason why I was travelling post-apocalyptic wastelands and risking everything was 'justified' and necessary. Someone had to do it. On the contrary, most of the time in The last of us 2 I felt very disconnected with our purpose. Thi wasn't the case on the first game either, when looking for a cure sounded like an absolutely understandable objective that justified taking all necessary risk (no cure equals to no hope for anyone, so...).
Also, way too many flashbacks in this game. Some of them confused the hell out of me, between switching timelines and characters, at some point I didn't know what I was doing (and even worse, I stopped caring!).

In any case, a superb game. 8,5/10 for me. Due to the narrative flaws it doesn't reach higher. Technical aspects, art, acting, sounds, music, polished gameplay... so many things are close to a 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An emotional rollercoaster. That is the best way I can describe this game. What started out as disappointing for me with the way Joel was handled and his demise, came round full circle at the end and left me feeling sad but pleased with how the story rounded out. This game is an emotional rollercoaster, there really is no other way to describe it and only at the end do you get the full picture. It's method of storytelling is creative, captivating and haunting all at the same time. The world Naughty Dog have created feels so real and terrifying. I finished wanting more, the way any great story should. I was hoping for a happy end for Ellie, I hope she returns to Jackson and finds what she is looking for. I would love a third game surrounding Abby and Lev now, I would like to see what happens next for them. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
