And the final of the game, show how Ellie matures, taking the decision of leaving alive to Abby and leave the revenge in the past, in this way closing a cycle.

Wow. This game was a mess. I ended the story a few minutes ago and wanted to see how the other players liked it. The story was so unnecessary at times and stretched out wayyyyy to long. The characters are boring and everything we loved in the first part is gone. The bossfights are a joke. I really had to convince me to end this game just for the trooys. I hated it very much.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to like Last of Us part 2 more than I did. The game has so much going for it. Beautiful graphics, excellent animations, talented actors, an almost perfect part one story and character development, an excellent composer. None of these were used to any great effect in part 2. The story in part 2 or maybe the storytelling completely missed the mark. If the main theme was to understand that heroes and good guys are matter of perspective the storytelling utterly failed. Had I been introduced to Abby before she killed Joel I could have grown to like her. Then maybe when she did kill Joel, I would feel conflicted instead of hatred and scorn. The first part did so well at making you care about characters despite how little time was given to their story. I cared about Sara, Sam, Tess, Henry before they were lost to the harsh reality of the apocalypse. When playing as Abby I just wanted to speed through the story. Seeing all the people and characters I killed as Ellie did give me a tinge of regret (side note, I avoided killing any dogs until was forced to kill Alice which was disappointing). But for Abby I felt nothing. Most infuriating, I had to play as Abby when fighting Ellie. Literally I was shaking my head and muttering to myself “No...” repeatedly. Maybe thats a testament to how good the story was in part 1 and how lacking it is in part 2. Great storytelling can humanize the worst of villains. I am sad to say, the storytelling so missed the mark that what’s great about this game is dragged down by the storytelling. I must say also I feel manipulated by the trailers that character swapped Jessy for Joel. I was already willing to believe Joey was dead and would only appear in visions but when that scene arrived, and Jessy appeared I felt cheated out of another excellent performance from Ashley and Troy. Visually this game is stunning. Gameplay it’s okay. Storywise it’s abysmal. Expand

Witness a cavalcade of unrelatable, boring, ugly and amoral characters making the worst decisions possible at every turn, and in the end nothing is resolved, because leaving the player satisified after 20 hours of sloughing through sludge just isn't postmodern and hip enough for Naughty Dog.

The real tragedy is that the combat segments are totally fine - there's just 30 minutes of unwanted garbage before every combat. This is a game that would be twice as good if it was half as long, and the removed sections should be every section where anyone speaks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Great gameplay, many new things implemented, excellent graphics at the top of the generation, very good music and let's talk about the history, it is good but they could do certain better things, for example the path that Joel travels to be killed had many conveniences, such as the way to trust Unknown people, I think these details could have been improved by making Joel not drop his weapons and point it at Abby and his people and ask them what they are doing there, this would have given him more realism since we remember that Joel was a hunter and a smuggler, so I had a lot of experience in these things, I did not dislike the death they gave me, but the way in which it was reached. After that I liked everything, I feel that they went a little over the issue of inclusion, there are many people with different gender preferences in the game and this you can know if you listen to the conversations and read some texts that you collect. I'm not saying this is bad, but in reality there are not many people like that, 1 person out of 100 has different preferences and putting so many takes away from realism. Well the game I recommend 100%, they have to play it so they will feel more empathy with the characters, there will be strong moments in which they will feel frustrated, sad and confused so I recommend stopping, assimilating and then continuing. They will not play any game because it treats the facts in a very crude and realistic way, if I could give it an evaluation it would put a 9.4 / 10.

Gore is gruesome, the violence is grim yet satisfying. The story is incredible engrossing, and challenging. The negative review scores reflect the general gaming populace's unwillingness to turn their brains on when engaging with stories. These people cry from the top of their lungs that video games are art, and then step all over and scream at a true masterpiece when it stares them in the face.

Not a full 10 out of 10 because...well, I can't really put into words wise. This game is truly amazing, and a must buy, but few games are perfect. For example, this game lacks multiplayer unlike it's predecessor. Also, the pacing suffers slightly towards the beginning of the halfway point of the game. The story telling is disjointed, and while it works incredibly well on the first playthrough, I'm not looking forward to playing it through a second time. A chronological mission setting would be a brilliant addition for a second playthrough.

The Last of Us Part II is a triumph, and will be remembered for years to come as being one of the most exciting and controversial games of a console generation. The Last of Us Part II ushered in the era of serious narrative based story telling at the end of the PS3 era, and it's not lost its touch in the slightest. Right at the very end of the PS4 it swoops in and reminds all the wannabe's who is boss. Buy it, play it, love it, let yourself cry and feel and empathise with those you hate. It'll be worth it, I promise.

User Reviews are important because it gives the general consensus of the average person's experience, but because some of the negative reviews didn't even play the game, let alone experience it in its entirety, it doesn't do the true score justice.

As I said before, it's understandable why people HATED this game. The prologue is incredibly rough, especially for those who had emotional attachments to the first one. But through the inciting incident, the story earns your (the player's) anger and hatred towards the antagonists. While the narrative certainly has some bumps here and there, particularly with pacing, it overall tells a poignant and bleak tale of revenge, hate, and dehumanization. I truly believe TLoU2 pushes the boundaries of storytelling and makes use of player interaction, in which it asks the audience to try and empathize with every character involved. I don't agree with some of the reviews claiming there are plot holes or felt that it was all pointless. There is a moral lesson to be had by the end, and it reveals what happens when we let hate and anger cloud our judgment.

The gameplay is a vast improvement from the first one. I didn't necessarily "enjoy" the first Last of Us, although it did have great moments. Part II has a more fluid and cinematic feel, making use of the PS4's technology and turning every combat encounter into a harrowing and stressful experience. Throughout the game I've had a stealth section turn into an intense firefight, and a firefight turn into a health-draining escape. Character development occurs through the action and really unravels who they are. The only thing I'm not a fan of are the QTE's.

It's unfortunate that the legacy of TLoU2 will be its controversy more so than the quality. I really think this game deserves a chance since it's mostly based on player experience. As someone who was spoiled by a major event in the story before the game came out, the emotional beats still landed and by the end, I felt exactly what the game intended. Again, if you didn't like the game after playing it, I completely understand, but for the ones who simply want to leave comments like "I hate gay people" in their review, you are ruining future User Scores.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us was one of the most thought provoking, emotional games I've ever played on PlayStation 3. And many years later, people still talk about how masterpiece it was. Part 2 literally is the opposite in every single way. The only reedming thing about it is the amazing graphics. Character design is horrible, it's just uglier in comparison to part 1. The story feels like it's written by someone who hates the game. You're literally forced to play as a character with zero development, noy only that but you kill joel in the most awful manner, and what's even worse is that his death accomplished nothing. Ellie didn't develop as a character at all. Even the new characters don't feel attractive and don't make you attach to them . And I'm not even going to mention the ending ( you get to experience the shock yourselves) but I'll say it's like watching John wick killing all the henchmen simply to let the main villain live. That's literally the end.
In summary, if you're truly a fan of the series, Don't bother with part2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a preface, I just made my first and only metacritic account and I am writing this review and giving The Last of Us Part II a 10/10 to help fight against the unnecessary review bombing. I would honestly give it a 9/10 for some game-play issues, but overall it was a worthwhile experience. I finished the game a few hours ago and successfully avoided any kind of spoilers throughout my time with the game. If you are a fan of the first game, you will enjoy this one. Just do yourself a favor, play through the prior game and this one and make up your own mind before reading though any review site or forum.

This title improved upon the first in every way, except for multiplayer which they totally got rid of, which is, in a way, an improvement. I experienced few, and very minor, game-play bugs, but nothing that tarnished the game in any way. The game-play gave me what I expected and more. It allows you to experiment and try different methods to overcoming enemy encounters. The puzzles are frequent. Exploring the detail rich environments is very rewarding and adds so much to the universe that Naughty Dog has created. My only complaint about the whole game would be in game-play, which is the AI. The AI is very very dumb. Naughty Dog has added some features that improve upon AI from the last game. At some instances I would have Hitman flashbacks where I would find some murder corner and pile up 20 bodies while the NPCs would vaguely know where I was, but would be completely unable to do anything about it. I do plan on replaying at a harder/the hardest difficulty so hopefully that won't be a problem anymore. However, I didn't buy this game for the shooting and looting. I bought this game for the story and the world in which it exists.

The story pulls you in directions that you do and do not want to go. Your heroes become jaded and selfish. The villains; you learn to understand and relate too. At the end of it all it's hard to tell who was right and who was wrong. And at the center of it all is you, the player. Throughout the entire journey, I experienced an array of emotions. The story doesn't go or end where I wanted it to, but it went and ended just where it should have. Some stories are fun and kind and the hold your hand along the entire path. This is not one of those stories. Treat this game like a novel. When your done with it, do it again. And then give it to someone else so that they may live through the characters like you did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a story about forgiveness. It is a plot about revenge. It challenges you to empathize with someone you hate by putting you in their shoes. It is a challenge that could only be taken in interactive media. What Naughty Dog has done here is bold and challenging, which is why it has been so polarizing. But if you give it time, and just try to turn on that part in your smoothed over gamer brain that empathizes with people unlike yourself, it is extremely rewarding and thought provoking. A 10/10 simply because it pushes the medium of story telling in games forward.

P.S. If you don't like the game because you play as a lesbian and then a ripped soldier girl who is protecting a trans boy, *you* are the fragile snowflakes you yourselves hate.

The story however takes massive gaps and simply relies too heavily on coincidental plot points and lazy dialogue to move forward, as well as a very odd order of events and far too stretched out overall arch. The game play itself is great but designed to be paired with an amazing motivating narrative which is frankly just missing altogether, which leads to it becoming repetitive and very linear.

Disappointing in so many ways with this sequel to arguably one of the greatest games of all time and the hallmark of storytelling in video games as a media.

Naughty Dog have succeeded in creating a game that elicits powerful emotions in the player, the divisiveness of reviews is a testament to that. I understand the vitriol of players that dont enjoy the process of internalizing grief or anger... i wouldnt say i enjoy it myself per se, but it gives this story an emotional resonance that i dont think i’ve ever experienced in a video game. I finished the game a week ago and am still thinking about it everyday; clearly the critics of this game are as well or they wouldnt still be writing about it.

Now to be fair the much talked about pacing issues with the game are accurate... confusion can arise from jumping to and from flashbacks, and the game drags in a few areas. The gameplay also hasnt quite evolved over the original to the degree in which i had hoped. Not insignificant quibbles but also not significant enough to detract from my overall experience. Its tough to hold those things against the developer when the rest of the game exhibits such an embarrassingly high level artistry in graphics, animation, sound design and especially the borderline oscar worthy voice acting. This game reeks of love.

I suspect that TLOU2 is a game that will be talked about for a long time and I’d bet that many people that are currently critical of it will someday warm to it. It may not be the best story ever told in this medium, but imo it is by far the most courageous. Kudos Naughty Dog.

First obviously is Joel's death. But lets say this was a revenge story. What makes the story awful is that it's told almost entirely from Abby's side AFTER she kills Joel (after he saves her life). That makes her instantly completely unlikable, and the impetus is not there to want her to succeed. But lets say you're able to get past that. Then the fact that you almost completely do not ever get to play Ellie any more after the awful trudge with her is over makes the game awful. I'd rather have played Ellie for the fight in the theater.

Then Abby makes herself even MORE unlikeable by wanting to kill a pregnant woman. Whereas when Ellie did that... she did not realize it until after Mel was dead, and Ellie did so in self defense, while Dina was already completely unconscious when Abby was going to kill Dina.

Abby is a villain who Neil Druckman wants us to think of as a hero. joel was an antihero turned outright hero who Neil Druckman wants us to think of as a villain, because apparently Neil Druckman thinks it's fine to kill children if there's a chance of healing other people from the death. That's literally a nazi scientist mentality.

But lets say you were able to even get past all that, and you get to the very end of the game..... If it ended with Ellie being able to put the past behind her in the farmhouse and live happily ever after with Dina and the baby, I would have said 'Okay, not a great game but not a garbage fire of awful'

What makes it a garbage fire of awful is what happens afterwards. Ellie becomes a straight on psycho completely out of character, who saves Abby and Lev, JUST So she can personally fight Abby who no longer wants to fight, to the point that Ellie threatens to murder Lev in order to make Abby fight. As if Ellie is some sort of horrible villain. Somehow the audience knows the character of Ellie a lot better than Neil Druckman's warped sensibilities can manage. Ellie could have killed Abby on the cross. Or she could have come to the idea that revenge will not bring Joel back, AND THEN FREED ABBY and let her go.

But no, instead it's a disjointed, amateurish mess. She frees abby so she can kill abby then doesnt kill abby at the last moment for literally no reason. If she's going to spare Abby for no reason, she could have done it before having her fingers bitten off to permanently mar her while Abby gets off scot free.

And even if you say 'But Abby had most of her friends killed' - yeah well so did Ellie. Jesse and Joel were both killed by Abby, and Tommy is permanently disabled because of Abby. This was a revenge story without the revenge. You play a villain, fighting against a hero, and the villain wins for no good reason at all.

Neil Druckman does not know how to write a story. Whatever lightning in a bottle he had with the first game and the DLC is gone here, although I did read in an interview how he thought that people would think 'Abby realizes that Joel lied and hates him for it' - when NONE of the audience read it that way, which make me wonder if someone else wrote the story and Neil Druckman just is a crappy director who doesnt know how to read nuance.

I will not be playing TLOU 3 if it comes out. I consider this to have been a tremendous waste of money and I almost quit the game after Joel died, then after I saw I had to play Abby. My only hope was eventually I'd play Ellie again, and I'd get to have fun with her as the far better developed and likeable character. And I was robbed of that.. You don't even get Ellie getting to go back to live happily ever after with Dina after sparing Ellie, because apparently Dina doesnt mind her friend Jesse being shot in the face and murdered. She wouldnt wait for Ellie to return - she instead packs up the entire farm and leaves. What.... do they have U-Haul in the apocalypse? WTF?!

I will not play any more Naughty Dog games if Neil Druckman has anything to do with them, regardless of how good the graphics and animation are. Even if the gameplay is good (and for this game the gameplay was mediocre honestly). Because the Last of Us games are STORY driven games. If the story sucks, then the game sucks.

    And here... the story sucked.

There's scenes that are just repeated and you have to go through them again and again and again. It really does break my heart to write this, but this is probably one of the worst story driven games I've played in a while, there's massive plot holes, unlikeable characters, in some areas it looks very cartoon like, i experienced a lot of bugs as well, it doors not opening, or doors being open but i can't continue the game. It's not a last of us game, the fact i paid £70 for the special edition shows how much i was looking forward to this game.
