This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely horrible game. I could've understood the good reviews if the game was well written. The theme of revenge and forgiveness is okay, also playing as the villain is an interesting choice....if only it wasn't written in such a bad way. If they wanted us to like Abby then they should've made us play with her from the very beginning, showing us her reasons and making us feel some empathy towards her instead of just throwing her in the game like that. And no, playing 10 hours as her isn't going to make me change mine or anyone's mind about her character at that point in the story. The LGBT theme is written by someone who clearly doesn't understand how mechanics between lesbians work. Casually the only sex scene between them seems like a pillow fight and there's also the presence of weed (I wonder why it's never mentioned afterwards, huh?). Overall, it really seems like the writer tried to represent the community without actually having an idea of how things really work. As a part of the community myself I don't feel represented in the least by such a thing.
If this wasn't the worst already there's also the mental illness part. You want to represent someone with PTSD? Fine, then show me ALL the sympthoms that come with it, not just a part of them. It's useless to try to portrait them as real people if then you don't give the idea of complete realism. Where's all the anxiety, the sudden changes of mind and absurd thoughts that come with PTSD? Why wasn't there EVER a confrontation with Dina about it?
Another point is that the characters don't seem themselves anymore. Joel and Ellie, the core of the previous game, feel completely out of character from the very beginning. Joel would've never revealed his name or trusted someone so easily, we all know that, so why doing him like this here? It just makes no sense. Nothing much has changed from the gameplay point of view and some areas are just boring. The ending, however, manages to do even worse than this. If the message is that revenge is bad, then why does Abby get away with what she's done? Does it make any sense that Ellie lets the only person who wronged her live and kills everyone else? This is just ridiculous. This game is nothing like the critic says about it. Absolute trash.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The reason why i have given this game such a low score is due to the false advertising at the teasing of this game where they blatantly used Joel in their trailers making the whole last of us community believe that he would join Ellie's journey but they instead swap these cinematics with Jesse, which is just a another way they destroyed their own reputation. Additionally, the only critic that give the best response with constructive criticism is IGN Japan, the gameplay of this game is fantastic but the story is the heart and soul of the game and that's completely destroyed by politics which the last game did not blatantly push in your face. i can see why Naughty dog lost a large amount of its employees one of my speculations is probably because the writer and director Neil Druckmann can not take any constructive criticism but would rather call you a bigot or would just rather just take all the positive reviews. The game purposely wants to do a parallel between Ellie and Abby but it just does not sick together its just too forced and ruins the flow of the story. Finally, Abby kills Joel even though he saves her life without hesitation but when i comes to Lev and Yara they save her life but hesitate at the start but she spares them and helps them at the end, even though they have probably killed countless numbers of the WLF and her friends this is a plot hole which makes no sense at all. It would probably be better if they just left the last of us franchise alone instead of destroying it with every political statement. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (SPOILERS) I am a big fan of the last of us and this story doesn't work, Joel has survived for 20+ years and he didn't trust many to survive and then he saves some random ripped girl and trust her to go to here group. And gets killed and tortured because of it. Ellie in the end has been hunting Abby (the ripped hulk girl) for months maybe and then in the fight Abby bites of Ellie's fingers and Ellie just let's her go ?
After nearly killing her girlfriend and Jesse, Joel and shooting Tommy in the head/eye.
    WHAT!?!?
The worst part of it all is that you have to play as the HULK for 10 hrs just because naughty dog want's you to understand her side of things although she killed Joel and most people do not want to play as the one who killed Joel the lead character in the first last of us.

Although i think the story is really bad, The graphics and npc animations Ellie's animations other stuff like gore and new zombies are great So i give it a 4/10.

Really wish this was some random zombie game and not the Tlou2 so I could just forget about it but damn has there ever been a worse sequel to a great game that completely forgets what made the original great, i.e . not some grandstanding never before seen plot ( it was a zombie property in the 2010's for God sake) but the relationship of 2 characters were allowed see grow and develop.
I reckon you can remember every single named character in the Tlou1 but in Tlou2 there's so many thrown at you with no time to shine that theyre usually dead before you've had a chance to memorise their names or even see a second personality trait.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the story didn't please everyone because everyone kinda wanted a happy ending or something that they would expect. On the contrary, even though the ending is sad and unbearable to the point I have nightmares, i totally love it. it made me think. which I think is good. The choices Ellie's choose to make were very characteristic to the human being. She couldn't free herself from the burden and the loss of her adoptive father. Obviously if you think ln a objective view, you would think her choice were dumb and that should have let it go, which I agree! But that's her story and we gotta understand that that is her point of view and that we can't just put our-self in the place of Ellie.

Remember when Joel saved Ellie from the Hospital, you were all agreeing that killing a doctor for selfish purpose was ok. Abby seeked revenge, Ellie seeked revenge too. It's human. It's just retribution.

On another note, I think the staff really made a good work, such as the way they wanted the game to be played. Like the intro with Abby, then Ellie for the revenge, and then the 2nd part with Abby point of view, to finally with Ellie again.

Final note : 9/10, love the story

You lose interest in it as the story forces you to do things that are not enjoyable. Its kinda repetitive and the AI is kinda predictable. The 2018 trailer was ofcourse over promised and we got a lesser version from the trailer with the less graphical fidelity. Replayabilty would rate it 2. It was just linear after the first day with Ellie. Story: would rate it 1. Contrived and forced. Joel isnt stupid or dumb in the first game. Why is he dumb in this one. Yara doesnt care her mum died. Wtf. Abby has no redeeming qualities and you just dont care playing this character. No wonder every reviewer gave it 10 as they only were allowed to play Ellies first half. Much of the game was an exercise in Ludonarrative dissonance, ultimately sadly resulting in an immeasurably uncomfortable and joyless playing experience. Being forced to beat up Ellie was the most egregious ‘spit in the fans face’ moment in any game i have experienced. Hating Abby then the game pulling a 180 and forcing you to play as her for half of the game required extreme effort and inner soul searching to empathise with her. Not particularly fun. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SPOILER ALERT! This is the best game that I have ever played. No other piece of media has made such a deep emotional impact on me. The storytelling was masterful; captivating and immersive the entire way through. Yes, it was really emotionally painful, but that's what I expected and wanted. Actually, it far surpassed expectations. I'm sure like many others, from the trailers and teasers that came out before the game, I had guessed that Dina was going to be the one who was murdered by some group, and the game was going to be Ellie and Joel going on a revenge mission together. I was taken by complete surprise that it turned out to be Joel who was murdered. Big, huge, humble props to the developers for pulling that off. I am a young woman with a father that reminds me of Joel, so playing Ellie and watching his death hit me really hard. Having so much emotional investment in Joel made Ellie's anger over his murder so much more compelling. Then they devoted so much time to Abby's side, and to her character, that I empathized with her side of the story as well. As much as we love Joel, he did stop the development of a vaccine that could have saved so many lives and could have turned the apocalypse around. On top of that, he murdered Abby's father (and a lot of other people) to do it. There's so much pain in this story, as there should be.

I also really appreciated the inclusion and diversity of the cast. Both main characters were badass women, and they were badass in their own ways. Thank you for giving us Abby's biceps (I hope she is able to get them back someday). My one and only complaint is that I wish they would have called out Owen more for being such a piece of ****

The graphics, audio, and gameplay were all astounding. There was so much detail in every level and the landscape felt very real. The audio amplified the emotions at every point. The enemies were terrifying. My boyfriend pointed out that making the flashlight invisible to zombies made the dark and scary parts all the better, because it could be creepy without taking away the players' ability to see.

    Amazing game all around.

As a player, you were spending several time with Joel and Ellie to create a bound and you can't simple cut that bound as something simple. If you were thinking on generate a bound with that antagonist character, I visualize multiple ways to do it, but the way you make the game narrative, merely didn’t work. I feel the 2nd part of the game like an excuse to make you feel in tuning with the antagonist, all looks so much forced. I feel it long, stressful and with out any sense, also to force you to fight against Ellie and Tommy is something that is painful for the player. The game playing, controls and drawings are awesome, but all those incredible features get opacity by the bad narrative and 2nd forced path. The 3rd part is the worst, has 0 sense, you are not going to sacrifice everything, to get nothing. Expand

Now, for a game that relies so heavely on story, as it should be, it falls on it's knees when compared to the first game. It makes you hate what once was loved by most of the fans. In the first hour and a half the game takes a very dark twist and tottaly ruins the entire mythos that the first game created... a shame. Expand

Like I am not mad because Joel died because developers needed a reason to make the game but the fact that Ellie wants to get her revenge and at the end she lets Abby get away with it it's just mind blowing and another fact that we play 10 hours with Abby just to learn her story makes me mad I don't want to play with Abby I want to kill Abby right away because it's a revenge story and at the end you don't even get the revenge that makes me mad. Gameplay is similar to the first one, not bad, but not the best. The story however is a revenge plot that is extremely poorly executed. They completely ripped apart everything that the first game had built up and definitely did not do right by Joel and Ellie as they said they were going to. Joel gets killed very early in a very dumb way and Ellie loses everything. The new characters are not fleshed out enough and most are forgettable. You play as Abby for half the game and I found her very unlikeable even as they show her past to get you to sympathize with her. The ten hours of gameplay with her just seemed to drag on. I found the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie to be the best part of the game and I really enjoyed them, but unfortunately those were short and few. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought I was prepared for everything, but to say that this was an unwelcome surprise is an understatement. I knew that the last of us series is dark and its expected that it would get darker with the most obvious expectation that one of the main characters would die or be incapacitated in some way (Joel was the laziest choice in my opinion) and the way they died would probably be gruesome and dark. But to just randomly introduce a character that noone knows just to up and kill joel for little more than shock value and then forcing the player to play as her to try to "understand" her is one of the worst writings i have ever seen. I had problems with other scenes like the sex scene which was just unnecessary in my opinion, the obvious attempt to appeal to SJWs by just making ellie gay and abby as transgender with no contribution to the plot, everyone being a female and Naughtdog refusing to kill females otherwise they might receive hate, and the overall plot that starts off weak and ends with literally nothing accomplished and noone dead. I loved the Last of Us for the setting, the characters, the beautiful but dark vibe, some decent gameplay, but most importantly the plot. It's sad to say that all of these aspects have felt downgraded with the only redeeming quality is a slightly better gameplay and visuals.

TLDR: If you want to play a decent zombie apocalypse game then this game delivers if you can ignore the entirety of the plot, but if you are here for story, good characters, good writing, and are a fan of the last of us series and looking for the same if not better quality game than the first one then this game will exceed your worst expectations. I heard alot of bad things about NaughtyDog, but I was willing to put all that aside as long as they stick to focusing on making good games, but this game has left me dissapointed, getting a refund, and never supporting this terrible company and I encourage you all to do the same

When you see people giving this game a 0 or a 1, that's the reason. However, I would argue that once it is all said and done, that is WHY this game is so incredible. I would classify this game as a masterpiece because of the incredibly challenging narrative that makes you question morality. But not just the characters, but also your own and that of your heroes. And not just in the obvious ways of "Is violence bad?" But to the extent as which people will go, the motivations, the responses to others' actions - It is a wildly powerful story about empathy and revenge and the cycle of violence.

On top of all of this, the graphics are jaw-dropping. They're as good as you remember Part 1 being, until you play Part 1 again and realize just how far Naughty Dog has taken it with this second game. The gameplay has also stepped it up in ways that feel more modern and fun, with many different ways to handle various situations that are thrown at you. Guns blazing, stealth, and even running for your life are all viable options here in most scenarios. The music is perfectly scored, and I'd feel I was doing you and the team a disservice if I didn't tell you to listen to the song in the end credits. Gives me chills.

Please give this game your love and attention. And when you're 5 hours in and you are just mad and angry and don't want to play anymore because of how things have panned out, keep going because that is the point and you can't cheat yourself out of one of the best stories of our generation.

Next, we play 3 game days and get a cut-scene with a seemingly denouement and .... end? Not! We play again these 3 full days, but on behalf of that same antagonist. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has amazing graphics, mechanics, and scenarios, and up until the end of Seattle day 3 I had this game at 10/10. I didn’t realize Naughty Dog was going to make us play as Joel’s torturer for half the game. When I first played as Abby, I thought it was just going to be a quick flashback, and I was thinking to myself “oh cool, these guns will be a part of Ellie’s inventory once it gets back to the main story and I finally kill Abby as Ellie”. First impressions are crucial in my opinion, and the second Abby and her group takes a golf club and beats Joel to death in front of his brother and Ellie, right after they saved Abby from the infected mob, I wanted Abby and her group dead. So I was very disappointed to find out the 2nd half of the game forced me to play as someone I wanted dead. I understand Naughty Dog is trying to have me sympathize with her, but there was nothing she could do to redeem herself, and I honestly didn’t care about her backstory or friends (most of which have already been killed by Ellie during the first half of the game). I had to force myself to trudge through her story, it’s unfortunate too because there were good encounters with the bloater-esque mini boss in the hospital parking garage, and Yara & Lev had a good story. The ending is also very disappointing because poor Ellie is still suffering from PTSD and seeing Joel’s bashed in head, which leads to her tracking down Abby and Lev who were captured by a gang in Santa Barbara. So after Ellie kills every gang member and frees all the prisoners, she finds Abby and Lev tied up on posts by the beach, she cuts them down and they walk to some boats to escape. In the process of escaping, Ellie has a flashback of Joel’s bashed in head again, and challenges Abby to a fight, she doesn’t use anything from her bag of weapons to just kill her, but instead wants to have a “fair” fight with Abby, but she still uses her knife for some reason. After losing two fingers, Ellie gains the upper hand and is in the process of drowning Abby until she has a flashback of Joel except this time it’s a positive flashback, so she lets Abby go and escape with Lev. I understand Naughty Dog is trying to push growth and maybe forgiveness, but Ellie left her girlfriend(wife?) and child for this, she comes home to and empty house, 8 fingers and a guitar from Joel she can no longer play. I’d like to imagine if Ellie was killed, Joel would scorch the earth for her, it’s disappointing that there was no choice to avenge him, and at the last second a flashback where she planned on working towards forgiving Joel stopped her from killing the one person who kept that from happening. Again maybe not everyone shares that feeling, but a choice would have been nice. Another complaint I have about the story is why does Joel still go by his whole full name when he knows he is wanted by any former fireflies from the previous game, let alone give his full name and camp location to a group of armed strangers. I feel like this game tried too hard to get the player to dislike Joel or at least sympathize with the fireflies more. I was disappointed Joel didn’t explain to Ellie the whole situation with the events of the first game at the fireflies hospital in salt lake, because if he did, Ellie would have probably been more receptive to his reasons at saving her, and how the fireflies broke the deal with Joel, and his “payment” for delivering Ellie was getting knocked out, having his possessions stolen and being marched out at gunpoint. So yes my opinion is very biased against a very incompetent Firefly organization, but only because the first game had done such a great job at painting the picture of them. TLDR: Not a fan when I’m forced to play half of the game as a character that kills a favorite character in the first few minutes. Even less of a fan that the daughter of the deceased character never gets revenge on the killer/torturer and she loses her family and two fingers in the process, poor Ellie didn’t deserve that. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To everyone saying that the story is bad. Incorrect, the narrative is bad. Get your head on straight. Joel is not a good person and wether you like it or not, he was eventually going to pay for his actions anyway. The world is still realistic enough that it still makes sense. Going out of your way to leave a bad review on a game that you clearly haven’t played all the way through is wrong. Now, I get that people are mad at the ending as well... And Abby. But to explain Abby, yes, I hate how you play nearly the rest of the game as her just as you were starting to have fun with Ellie. This is were the NARRATIVE is wrong, not the story. By shoving you in to play a character you hate, and making her seem likable, it’s hard to play that portion of the game. The only way they could have fixed this is by splitting the Ellie and Abby scenes up leading to them meeting up together. The next thing is that the ending is bad. It’s questionable and symbolic, yes, but not bad. I’m not saying it’s great either but there are some thing you need to realize. Symbolism is a big feature in this game. The moth (one of the key symbols) is to display how moths are attracted to light, which kills them, just how Ellie is attracted to revenge, it takes everything away from her, just as it also took Abby’s friends. But the symbolic ending isn’t that Ellie was trying to avenge Joel, she was trying to find peace instead, which is why she spares Abby when she forgives Joel (the last flashback). The ending also isn’t as sad as you may think. As many people have pointed out, Ellie has her bracelet that Dina gave her AFTER the fight with Abby at the end, but not when she left to go find her. All of Ellie’s stuff is also gone from the house except a few paintings and anything related to Joel. This is most likely to show that she is still with Dina in Jackson but has come to finally let Joel rest (leaving all of his stuff behind and his guitar). She does this by playing the first notes of Joel’s song, and then leaves into the woods. If I were to guess, a Part III would be a sort of redemption arc that will hopefully not make the same mistakes this game did. Final note, to touch on bs arguments, here:
LGBTQ-guys, it’s 2020, move on and get over it.
Abby has BIg aRmS-Really? What argument is that, it’s kinda sexist and I would suggest looking up the person they modeled Abby’s body for.
Politics-Sure, it makes the game bad, but it doesn’t. If you want politics, watch the first game. FEDRA vs FireFlies is the definition of politics.
    Religion-I mean... ok?
Boring to play-there are difficulty settings...

Closing note: this game isn’t bad but it’s not the best thing on the planet. If this game were to be for everyone’s expectations, it would be boring. It would make the entire game guessable if it was what somebody wants. Also, this game follows the same act story that the first game had. A person sets out on a journey to complete a task ultimately changing their mind in the end. I’m talking about the first game here, not the second.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a story-driven game, thus relying heavily on it's story. Gameplay and graphics are a minor point compared to this.

The story of The Last Of Us clearly went downwards since the first installment. Every credible source will tell you this fact as well. Personally I think this is connected to the fact that ND crunched a lot of employees in the making of this game. Eventually they didn't know what to, since all the competent people left the company, so they decided to make this.

After playing the game, I could probably tell you the names of about 3 characters, the ones from the first game not included. These people are the same throughout the game. There is no character development. I think the game does try to make you care about it's characters and there troubles, but I haven't met a credible source that say they do care about the characters. Neither do I. It is clear that the writers of this game are not the same as the last game, to say the least. Futhermore, after viewing the trailers for this game you wouldn't think this is the direction it would you. Plenty of people feel baited into buying this game. Luckily I have managed to refund it.

The gameplay is solid, however it is a copy and paste of the first installment.

The graphics are not bad, but that is what you expect from a game that has been in development for 7-8 years.

All in all I give this game a 0/10, for it did not deliver.

This game is nowhere near the masterpiece it is touted as but it's not a terrible game either. I appreciate Naughty Dog for attempting to push the boundaries of emotional intensity but while this is praiseworthy, they failed spectacularly. The characters could all be interchanged with their motives, and no one would know the difference. Ellie, who you would come to love in the first game as a spunky, lighthearted but caring person is devolved into whatever it is they call a character. I do understand why they wanted to go this direction with the story, but it's so poorly done and contrived. Ellie's voice actor's talented was wasted by this script.

The gameplay overall was quite fun for the first 10-15 hours but puzzles they used in the first game, are too far and few between here. It soon gets stale and if that isn't bad enough, they throw a huge tonal shift at you and expect the same gameplay to carry you through for another 10 hours or so. That being said, the environment design is amazing and it does make Seattle feel like it's own character. What they did here was nothing short of amazing. I think most people would like the story beats and feel it compelling for the first half of the game and does have some pretty good moments. Overall, I'd say I'm ok with the beginning and ending of the story, but getting there was emotionally painful and unpleasant to play through. This is a videogame first and foremost after all and thus I can't give it a positive score for any of it's redeeming qualities.

Pues no... O a Ellie.. O...

Has a father of girls, after they killed the main character, that I came to strongly relate to after part one, and being forced to play as the killer I could no longer stomach playing the game. I'm glad I only rented this so I can send it back and not be out $60.

People need to complete this game before judging it.
Everyone is so upset about Joel dying and the number one argument I'm seeing is that he was catious in the first game and is somehow trusting in the second?"
Think about how many people are in their encampment now, and the situation they just got out of being chased down by a horde. They spent years building it to that degree and their is always risks with strangers, but there is HAS to be some form of vulnerability to allow a camp to grow that large. There has to be some form of trust. Joel had a moment of vulnerability, it's a human mistake.
For anyone that actually completed the game the whole theme was about how cruel life can be and how one decision stretches to affect everything around them. Decisions made by all characters which were masterfully portrayed and the very real threat that life could end at any moment. This is a MUST PLAY. It has the best acting you can find out there with the best graphics you can find on the market with an INSANELY dark and gripping story about humanity that you have to experience

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Killing a character as great and fleshed out as Joel for shock value. Forcing us to try and sympathize with a character in Abby who is irredeemable. There is in fact a big difference between Ellie and her. Add to the fact that we have to play as her for a large chunk of the game. Then the ending is hollow, Ellie’s decision does not match up with who she has been built up to be throughout the game. It’s on par with the sudden heel turn of Daenerys at the end of season 8 of Game of Thrones as in it’s a idiotic character choice. Such a disappointment. Expand

Mediocre game improvements and a boring hack story.

This game really needed to do only two things 1) Not do Joel dirty. 2) have a good ending.

    It failed

I think it's the story and the way it is presented that is probably what will make you love or hate this game, personally I loved it, and having gone and watched playthroughs after completing it myself found myself appreciating it even more.

It's difficult to say too much more without starting to spoil it, all I can suggest is that if you do play it you will likely find some of it difficult to play through for varying reasons, but persevere and allow your preconceptions to be challenged and hopefully you will enjoy and appreciate it. Remember that it's a story-driven game where you are being shown the story, much like a book or film, and not one where you will get to take it in the direction you wish to see it go. If you can be fine with that, I think you are much more likely to have a better time with this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game broke my heart in the worst way possible. After playing the first game on ps3, than multiple times after on PS4, I was so excited for this game. I had only seen a few trailers, and got spoiled on absolutely nothing for the game. After finishing it a few minutes ago, I wish I had gotten spoiled. I could’ve saved myself many hours of frustration and disappointment and 60 dollars. Obviously, the gameplay, graphics, level and sound design are great, but the story is atrocious. The massive disrespect to Joel, the extremely bad pacing and dynamic between Joel and Ellie in this game, the villain, who we are made to play as for at least 10 hours who they clearly want us to sympathize with, but is one of the most unsympathetic characters I’ve ever seen in anything. This story is just down right stupid. Please I beg you anyone reading this, for anyone who hasn’t played this yet and loved The last of us and the amazing Left Behind DLC like I did, do not buy this game. This game is a gigantic slap in the face to most fans of the first game. I can honestly say, I don’t dislike this game, I absolutely hate it with all my heart. Expand

People always complain that this is a bad revenge plot. But its actually a story of forgiveness.
If people realize it, they'll at least start understanding the true beauty of this game.

P.S: People complain that Ellie kills a lot of people so forgiveness doesnt make sense.
IF we are talking gameplay, lot of those encounters can be avoided with stealth. This makes the motivation of her killing to be "Killing to SURVIVE". Yes I know she does a lot of dark **** But thats why she realises in the end right?

    2. despite the death of you know who, the story does not make sense: Abby is so cruel and try to kill Ellie in second encounter, but she stops after looking at Lev while Lev's sis was jsut killed. What a humanity?

    4. the graphic is a bit overrated: the water in last scene is a bit PS3 quality.

I'm all for diversity in video game main characters and the rebuttal of "you just hate X" is undeniably childish. This game aims high but whiffs hard while insecurely acting tough the whole time. Disappointing.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
