It was something the had been done before in games, but the sum of its parts made it a game that for me was almost a 10/10 for me. When I heard that the sequel was finally coming out I was ecstatic. I was wanting to see the rest of the story of Joel and Ellie.

Then the leaks came out...oh boy the leaks. I don't give a crap if a character is gay or trans, but what matters is that they are wrote as a human being first not just some token character that we get so much of in today's media, but what we got was this....trainwreck.

As I said I wanted to like this game, I really did. This game had the potential to tell a great story. It tells a story, but the story it tells fell flat for me. Without going into details, I love a revenge plot. I have seen so many in movies and other games, but this one dropped the ball hard. However, I am not wanting to spoil the game for anyone out of respect for the players, not the company or its marketing.

This could have been a great sequel if it wasn't handled so poorly. Abby could have been a good character if they handled it better, Joel was all-but squandered, but Ellie I enjoyed. It was good to see her grow up, but then the last half of the game.....urgh.

That's why I have to give this game a 4. Graphically its fine, a good 7 out of 10, Gameplay is the same 7 out of 10, Story is an abysmal 3 out of 10. If this was a different IP I might have scored it higher with a 5 out of 10 or a 6. Yet, this is not a new IP. This is a sequel to one of the best games I have played and one that I have finished more than once just to find things i may have missed the first time. Sequels will always be judged more harshly by the fans of the previous installment. Many sequels will never be as good or even greater than the original.

Neil Druckmann is an egotistical moron who ruined this franchise, and will most assuredly take Naughty Dog down along with it.

From Crash, to Jak, to Uncharted to even TLOU1... then this travesty happens.

A downward spiral is beginning, and this man is the source of it all.

Bad story, bad plot, lots of visual bugs, this game look and feel like a movie, a 30 hours story that could be told in 10 hours or even less. The world is very bad designed, comparising with the first game, and look even worse in a base ps4. I finished this game and I don't get what is the point, "Revenge is bad, forgive is good"? Don't buy this game, it's a total waste of money.

I spent over 100 hours with Joel and Elle and within the first hour of this gameplay, Neil slaughtered Joel and forced us to play 10+ hours as Abby and wish we can understand why she slaughtered Joel? NO WAY! In that world, everyone suffers, everyone has reasons, Even David has reason to eat human. I don't care what is Abby's reason, as long as she slaughtered Joel, she has to pay the price. Neil slaughtered my Joel, Naughty Dog will pay the price.
As for Abby's reason? Come on, Abby's daddy wants to kill Elle first, Joel is about to stop murder, this action is justified even under our current law system. Even if the goal is to create a vaccine, does anyone ask Elle first? No. Unless Elle wants to give her life to create a vaccine, Abby's dad is a murder. There is no justice for Abby's revenge, period. Not even to mention Joel just saved her life 10 mins ago.
Abby's story is meaningless, if she can turn back on WLF because someone just saved her life, then she shouldn't kill Joel in the first place. If Neil wants to convince me that Abby is a good guy, he nees to work harder.
I won't deny this game is a miracle. This is the first time in my gameplay history that I wish the character die in my hand. When I play Elle part, I am careful and I don't want her gets any injure, when I see the scars in her back, it breaks my heart. As for Abby, I don't care, no stealth, all face to face battle, I just want her suffers. I won't forgive her, never. If Neil don't let Elle kill her for vengeance, I will do it. During the batter, I often stop playing and just watch, how, runner, clicker, WLF, etc, kill her. I even let her fell on purpose. How dare Neil force me to play Abby? This is unforgivable.
I won't buy any games from Naughty Dog any more unless Naughty Dog officially apologies and fire Neil.

Waited 7 years for this game and ultimately it disappointed. Uninteresting characters, established characters that act completely different when they shouldn’t be. The gameplay of the game undermines the message it tries to convey, making the whole thing pointless. The “twist” doesn’t work because they completely failed at making you care about a certain character. Everything disappointed.

    - The marketing was manipulative
    - The story is forced, with laughable contradictions
    - The Soul of the first game is non-existent
    - The writing is horrible, weak and tasteless
    - Most of the supporting characters are either laughably forgettable, amazingly boring, or extremely repugnant.
    - The story is challenging, but in the worst kind of way. It is challenging to believe and difficult to not laugh at how bad the writing is.

Some games ask you to Suspend Disbelief, this game asks you to play like you are a potato. It asks you to ignore all the plot holes, unrealistic character motivations and laughably unbelievable scenarios.

In a word, the Last of Us 2 is inauthentic. And this is why it fails.

As a preface, I just made my first and only metacritic account and I am writing this review and giving The Last of Us Part II a 10/10 to help fight against the unnecessary review bombing. I would honestly give it a 9/10 for some game-play issues, but overall it was a worthwhile experience. I finished the game a few hours ago and successfully avoided any kind of spoilers throughout my time with the game. If you are a fan of the first game, you will enjoy this one. Just do yourself a favor, play through the prior game and this one and make up your own mind before reading though any review site or forum.

This title improved upon the first in every way, except for multiplayer which they totally got rid of, which is, in a way, an improvement. I experienced few, and very minor, game-play bugs, but nothing that tarnished the game in any way. The game-play gave me what I expected and more. It allows you to experiment and try different methods to overcoming enemy encounters. The puzzles are frequent. Exploring the detail rich environments is very rewarding and adds so much to the universe that Naughty Dog has created. My only complaint about the whole game would be in game-play, which is the AI. The AI is very very dumb. Naughty Dog has added some features that improve upon AI from the last game. At some instances I would have Hitman flashbacks where I would find some murder corner and pile up 20 bodies while the NPCs would vaguely know where I was, but would be completely unable to do anything about it. I do plan on replaying at a harder/the hardest difficulty so hopefully that won't be a problem anymore. However, I didn't buy this game for the shooting and looting. I bought this game for the story and the world in which it exists.

The story pulls you in directions that you do and do not want to go. Your heroes become jaded and selfish. The villains; you learn to understand and relate too. At the end of it all it's hard to tell who was right and who was wrong. And at the center of it all is you, the player. Throughout the entire journey, I experienced an array of emotions. The story doesn't go or end where I wanted it to, but it went and ended just where it should have. Some stories are fun and kind and the hold your hand along the entire path. This is not one of those stories. Treat this game like a novel. When your done with it, do it again. And then give it to someone else so that they may live through the characters like you did.

Aside from the storyline which I had little problem with ( although not the best by any means ), there are 3 major flaws.

1- not how Joel dies, in fact I liked the d the fact that I was quite brutal. I was already expecting him to die. It is NOT how he dies, it is the fact that he dies within 2 hours of the game. The main character of the last of us dies within the first 2 hours of the game Let that sink in. Its like Harry Potter dying in the first 20 minutes of the film. That he died? Fine. But could they not have come up with something later down the line?.

2- I've thought this long and hard. Could they not have come up with the option to play abby? Because honest to god, it is not the fact that I genuinely did not for one second feel like playing baby. Her story line is indeed fun. You get to explore the world a bit more. And yet, I still had no emotional connection to her. At all. Being forced to play a character I do NOT want to play is not fun.

3- I heard Neil Druckman does not use fun to describe this game. Whatever happened to video games? To the enjoyment of playing game and forgetting the real world. I want everybody to finish reading this review and if you have not yet played the game, play it and ask yourself., did you, at any point had any fun playing it? Because I speak for myself when I say. Not at all did I have any fun. I was always on edge. Always waiting for something. I literally did not smile at all, unless it was a ellie/joel flashback. It was a horrible feeling. And it is a game I could never play twice. Again, not because of the storyline. But the fun was literally vacuumed out of that game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THAT IS GOOD SAVE YOUR MONEY AND FORGET THIS EXISTS. Please do yourself a favor and save your money this game is an insult to anyone who has the slightest interest in movies and storytelling. (note: I am not rating this game on gameplay at all because that would make it a 0 for me since the gameplay is boring and naughty dog games are slightly interactive movies so as such I review them like that)The only positive that this game has is its the most beautiful looking game I've seen. But graphics don't save lazy writing. This game is a message, NOT A STORY. Characters act uncharacteristically to push the message and completely shown to be disposable. Now to talk about this game in-depth i have to spoil the major story elements if you are for whatever still interested in this game after reading all these reviews stop here. Now I'm going to start from the beginning, Now I do not have an issue with what happened to Joel, I have expected it after the first game and golf is a great sport. I have an issue on what leads to his death, Joel is known to be very secretive SO WHY DOES HE GIVE AWAY ALL OF HIS INFORMATION TO COMPLETE STRANGERS and you cant make the argument that he has changed because not only A. he is in a zombie apocalypse but B. Joel and the people he is with is known to be attacked by hunters so he can't risk just giving his information away. Now If you ignore that the rest of Ellie's story is fine until we get to Abby, the game attempts to make Abby a misunderstood character who was eaten with revenge but it only does the opposite ABBY IS A MONSTER even if you ignore she killed Joel, she has been know to be ok with killing people she once sat at the same table with and being excited to kill a pregnant woman. No matter what you can't make me like her in any sense. You have to play as Abby FOR TEN HOURS if you cut most of her parts out not only would you have a better product but your goal of making me sympathize with her would have been better executed. The biggest sin of this game is the ending after Ellie finally finds Abby hung from a tree almost dead, instead of letting her die, SHE FREES HER. You could have ended the game with her walking away and still have her end the cycle it would have been anti-climatic but it would still be better than what happens she frees her and proceeds to challenge her to fight her to death to which she begins winning, in the fight Abby bites off two of Ellie's fingers so if she wasn't mad before now she should see red. Ellie proceeds to drown her and as she is dying and Ellie is getting her revenge the most retarded thing in the entire game proceeds to happen ELLIE LETS HER GO AFTER REMEMBERING WHO SHE KILLED. WHAT??? I AM DUMBFOUNDED BY THIS. The logical response to remembering Joel is letting her come up for air and drowning her again. This doesn't even do what the game was trying to push. LETTING ABBY LEAVE DOESNT END THE CYCLE OF REVENGE. What is stopping Abby from coming back and finishing the job? There is no implication she doesn't want to do that so your message is now pointless killing her would have stopped it. After letting Abby ago Ellie is left with nothing, Abby gets her revenge and what she wants, while Ellie loses everything she can't even play her guitar how does that encourage people to end their cycles of revenge. The only saving graces for this game is the flashback sequences, It's almost like the writers just fell asleep for the rest of the game except for these parts. They should have charged $20 for the game and only had the flashback sequences, This would live up to the legacy of the last one and still be enjoyable. OR HELL if you cut 8 or more hours of the Abby parts, rewrite both the ending and beginning to make sense, you could have a 9/10 game. Or even just cutting the Abby parts would make it a 7/10. But that doesn't happen this game is just unbearable. This game could be a 5/10 if these were completely new characters and not Joel and Ellie it would at the very least fix the beginning and help certain people from hearing Abbys story out in the beginning but again this doesn't happen. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THAT IS GOOD SAVE YOUR MONEY AND FORGET THIS EXISTS. Expand

The way he walked into a trap is so out of character for who he is that it raised red flags for me before anything else. And I love Abby as a character, but I didn't want to play her. And no I did NOT want Ellie to leave her family, her little spud, for some revenge spree, and it honestly didn't make that much sense.
Also if she killed like dozens of people just to get to Abby who was imprisoned, why on GODS GREEN EARTH would she hesitate to kill Abby? Oh, these people were just NPCs, but Abby, she's special. ugh...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abby is a terrible and ugly character, inside and out. This game was supposed to be about Ellie, yet you spent half the game playing through garbage you don't care about. I get what the writers were trying to do, but they fail in making you care about Abby, which makes the game fail in my opinion.
The gameplay is exactly the same as the first game, except you can go prone now. Very little innovation.
The only good this about this game is the graphics. They are the best you will see on the PS4. The environments are insanely detailed and the lighting effects are amazing.
I found the game tedious to finish. Very dissatisfied and disappointed in this entry of the series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joel dies. Not only does he die, but he dies like an animal. He dies because incompetent writers made him incompetent for the sake of getting him killed. Abby gets everything. She’s living the good life. Hey, her friends might be dying one by one, but it’s all good. She got to avenge her NPC father from the first game. What does Ellie get? Nothing. She goes on a long and arduous journey to avenge her father figure. She loses everything. She finally reaches Abby, and having piled thousands of bodies just to get to her, decides— “Eh. I’m not feeling it anymore, Mr. Krabs.” She is left alone and broken at the end of the game. Abby gets off scot free because Neil couldn’t stand the thought of killing the character he mocapped a sex scene with. The game doesn’t have a bad ending.
    It has a pathetic ending.

What a waste of time. Disgraceful. You’re better off pretending it never existed.

After 25 years of living in a post apocalyptic world and having done the kind of work Joël did the event leading to his execution look impossible to me. A guy with his background would never had been so relaxed with such a big group and rrevealedhis real name...
Forcing us to play such a beloved characters killer when is it a good idea i don't give a **** about Abby...
And weak ending it's highly illogical to think about Joël playing guitar as you're about to finally avenge him at best if you do guet a flashback is one about him guetting killed an then be even more motivated to fish the bith...but never would let the **** go...
They also made Ellie highly unlikable...
Making her selfish and unable to understand that it's because Joël loved her that he saved her in the even from the first opus.
They never at one moment in the story is the clicker outbreak given more info that player didn't know from the first game...

I think Naughty Dog had political messages they wish to tell using the story and it was more important to them than to deliver a good story

Mechanics wise the same as you'd expect from the first game. No complaints there. Though none of us are playing TLOU for the gameplay, we are here for the story. And the way a major character was killed and the obviously low skilled emotional manipulation involved absolutely destroys this game's value.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Played both. Didn't read spoilers. Wasn't sure I was gonna love 2 as much as 1. Thought a basic revenge story would be boring. People on the internet are skimming through this game as if it were a reading assignment due the next day (it shows). The game tells a complex tale of coping with grief, challenging you to objectively humanize the enemy, and themes of evolving identity analogous to the first game. Along with a ton more that I know I missed on my first playthrough. If you are on the fence about playing this game stop reading reviews, stop watching content, just find a way to play the game yourself. The experience is powerful if you just allow yourself to experience it organically. Or... Continue to spread negativity and gain nothing but contempt from others I.e. post comments about a game you truly never attempted to care about in a futile attempt to get revenge for a plotline that you disagree with. The game won't change and you being mad about it does nothing about it sales figures 4 million copies in 3 days. Learn to move on. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an interesting case, I could spend about 20 paragraphs trying to explain what went wrong and I'd still be unable to express how I feel about it. I'll do my best nonetheless.

    Music 6/10

Honestly, I find the music to be quite unremarkable, none of the tracks stuck with me like other OSTs have in the past. At the end of the day, this type of music isn't for me and I accept it.

    Graphics 9/10

The game is visually stunning, with the reason why it's not a 10/10 being that I found some visual bugs along the way, some of which were very noticeable.

    Gameplay 8/10

The gameplay being 8/10 is me comparing it to the previous game, combat as stayed mostly the same and, for the kind of game it is, it works. However, even though gameplay would generally be the most important part of a game, this is more akin to a movie, which is why I feel sad to have to give the story...

    Story 1/10

There's no way to explain how I felt after finishing the game, although disgust might be the closest feeling. Upon finishing the story, I just couldn't understand why they would shoot themselves in the foot like this. It's genuinely baffling that after the emotional story of TLOU Part 1, that they would manage to screw it up this much. Killing off the character that served as the protagonist in the first title of a series has been done before and, when done right, can cause some emotional responses from people that no other medium can. However, never had I seen that treated it's past with such disrespect, literally spitting at it's corpse. Some other writing decisions were also dubious, such as playing from the POV of the antagonist. However, the game tries to convince the player to like the character who killed the previous protagonist. When games make you play as the villain, it's generally in one of two ways: either because the villain is cool and interesting (examples: Vergil from DMC or M. Bison in Street Fighter) or to reinforce how evil the villain really is. Instead, the game tries to make the villain sympathetic and utterly fails at it. Additionally, it feels like the game is trying to send a message, that THIS is what you have now and you'll buy it and play it and YOU WILL LIKE IT, borderline disrespecting the people who have waited for years for this game. In summary, the story doesn't feel like a downgrade, it feels like they threw together ideas from what could have been a good story and worked their hardest to make it as bad as possible.

    Conclusion

Some might think that "since everything else was good, then the game doesn't deserve a 2 because of the story". However, as I said, The Last of Us is more of a movie than a game and, if this is the best that the writers can come up with after 7 years, which, then I can only say that I'd rather pretend that this never happened and keep waiting for the release of the game that I and many others were expecting, one that doesn't make such ridiculous mistakes in it's writing.

Also, I want to leave a note at the end, the way Naughty Dog (specifically the director for TLOU 2, Neil Druckmann) and Sony have been taking the criticism against the game has been nothing short of ridiculous. You could make the argument that the people leaving negative reviews are hate-filled trolls and, to an extent, there's always people like that but you'd have to be insane to believe that everyone who dislikes this game is like that. I want to leave it as clear as possible, I don't have any problem with the representation in the game, although I still question if it was necessary in the game. However, the "progressiveness" of a piece of media does not make it immune to criticism and I stand by what I wrote. The game is a true narrative mess and to treat the fan base as a bunch of "haters", "trolls", "bots" and "racists" for disliking it is not the way to go.

And there you have it, I hope I managed to convey how I fet about the game as a whole, although I feel like there was more to be said. I doubt anyone at ND will ever see this but understand, this review comes from someone who admires the work you do, I have nothing but respect for the people who work on video games for people like myself who enjoy playing them.

TL;DR: Saying that I was disappointed isn't nearly enough to express how I felt about this game's story.

The gameplay, the graphics are absolutely amazing but I cannot bare how the storyline of the game was handled. It could have been so much better. A wait for this game for so long just to find out what happened absolutely left me in shatters. They could've just left it at where it ended and it would still be something I'd remember. But they went ahead and made me hate their production. Whoever called this a piece of art was just being subtle to not hurt some mentally **** up people who came out with that kind of a narrative. And they even went ahead and bought these critic sites who are calling it a must play game. If u loved the Last of us, I'd really not recommend u even reading about what happened in this part. Combat feels fluid, tactical and exhilarating. It has the same brutal impact of the original’s, mixed with an increased variety of ways to approach scenarios with some thrilling results. The environments are some of the most detailed in any game I’ve experienced and the graphics are some of the best on either console or PC. The music and sound design are also stand out along with the brilliant acting and mo-cap from the likes of Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey and Troy Baker who breath such life into their characters. The story has proven to be incredibly divisive but I really feel its one of the strongest parts of the game. It drew me in completely and I just had to keep playing as I was desperate to know how it would all come to an end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Obviously the user score isn't reflective of the quality of the game itself, but rather the projected insecurities of those that haven't even played it. When the game was leaked, people criticized it for the way that they disrespectfully killed off Joel or how Abby is supposedly trans. Now that the game is out, all of those points just seem to fizzle away. The truth is there, plain and simple... Naughty dog made an incredible game. They killed off Joel early on in a brutal way but the reasoning behind that was expanded upon later on. I had seen people stop playing or give up the game at that point, even going so far as destroying their disk. Those people will miss out on the context and expansion of Joel's character via the various flashback exposition moments between Ellie and Joel in the off moments between Part 1 and 2. Joel is a fantastic character, an excellent father figure, but a **** awful human being for what he decided to do to save Ellie. He shot up a hospital, killed Marlene, killed the only medical professionals that could have created a cure for all of the innocent people left alive, just for him to have his daughter figure still in his life. Over the course of the first game as you progress by killing dozens of people but those were usually cases of self defense, the moment Joel first killed in Seattle, he was strictly on the offensive and a lot of people were desensitized to the fact that he was killing due to them just being random enemies just like every other encounter. The Last of Us Part 2 expands on that by humanizing the WLF. While brutal, they're still humans that are just trying to survive. They appear to be backpacked survivors just like Joel and Ellie, they call each other by name, they get devastated upon discovering the bodies of one of their friends/comrades/dogs that have been slaughtered by you or the Scars. This new perspective simply expands on what you're really facing and if you're really the good guy in the story. It's highly debatable if what Joel and Ellie do in the games that would be considered "right" but those lines become more apparent the more you kill. Joel was a selfish monster that let his own feelings of losing a daughter again take over, dooming humanity. I've discussed this with others and people came up with the argument that Joel had finally found something worth fighting for and living for in a game where it constantly was showing you that humanity was beyond redemption or repair. The more you see Jackson thriving in the second game, you see that a chance at a normal life was a reality that nobody had considered and that a vaccine would have saved so many innocent lives of civilized people. Ellie begins to follow in Joel's footsteps by murdering every one in her path in order to enact vengeance against anyone involved in the death of Joel. An emotional, irrational, response to people that were perfectly in their rights to hunt down a mass murderer of innocent doctors and civilians looking to better the world. Sure it may feel cathartic and satisfying to hunt down these people and get your revenge but that difference in perspective gets thruster onto you when you begin to play as Abby. You peer into the lives you've destroyed or devastated in the events of the first game and you see that you're not the hero that your protagonistic bias has led you to believe. You're becoming the horrifying monster that Joel was, and in that the game's message became clear. This is the circular path that revenge will always be. Abby understands it better than Ellie which is why Abby leaves Ellie alive TWICE. Which brings me to my second point, as of the release of the game the leaks were wrong in the regard that Abby is trans. She's not and that was confirmed. Regardless of if she was trans or not, it was clear just how much spite people had towards a character like her. She's not pretty and she's not meant to be pretty and it pissed people off that they're forced to play as "the ugly villain". I won't even begin to address the hatred against transgender individuals being the motivator for so many negative reviews because that's not a valid point to be making. Abby is muscular, built like a fridge with those broad shoulders. We see in the flashbacks she wasn't always that way, but after the death of her innocent father she trained hard to be able to be strong enough to kill the man who killed him. Sure she might not be the most relatable character you've ever played in a video game, but her perspective was necessary to tell this two incredibly different sides to the same story. You're not meant to like her, you're meant to understand her. The game itself I feel had expanded quite nicely while staying true to the gameplay of the first. The controls were familiar but with an accessible expansion of convenience in terms of weapons and crafting. The strongest commendation I'd give is the sheer attention to detail when it comes to storytelling and gameplay. Expand

In some sort of attempt to make it original it's...ironically...some of the most cliched and infuriating story choices i've ever played, playing certain sections just made me want to put down the controller and turn off my PS4.

Positives are that it looks amazing, the locations are truly incredible. It sounds amazing and has some decent gameplay (besides the nigh constant resource scavenging which is infuriating), but doesn't improve too much over Part 1.

However, that alone doesn't excuse this mess, don't listen to the IGN's etc, that call this a masterpiece...it's not, not even if you are a fan of part 1...which is a true masterpiece.

Neil Druckman, if you are seriously proud of this story, then you shouldn't be allowed to make any more games.

I can't believe we had to wait 7 years for this joke...I wish i could erase Part 2 from my memory and believe that there isn't a sequel. Don't buy this game, just pretend the end of Part 1 is the end of this story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU part II, like the name sugest, is a second part of an story. So you need to analise the game as a sequel for the first game.

About the game-play: TLOU2 give to us the smooth game-play for the first game, with a lot of improve; the shooter part of the game have the same mechanic of the first game, with more animations and more smooth animations, everything sounds more real, the fight mechanics of the second game is way better than the first game, the aditional evasion mechanic makes the melle fight way better too, most important, the melle animations make sense with the scape mechanics, making a fluid scene in every fight scene.

About the story: You need to understand that this game occours 4 years after the first game; Joel, Ellie and the rest of thw crew showed to us on the first game are now living in a "peacefull" city, with a "Peacefull" live, when you read the log of scouts, this is more clear. So... There`s some aspects of this situation you need to understand to get the point of the plot.

When you move on the plto, you have a mission, a revenge mission, and a Breaking Bad mission also. The thing about this game is about you, becaming a monster, and undertand what makes you a monster... And why eveybody in this game is a monster.

There`s plot hole, this is true. The game isin`t perfect, this is true also. But the things that this game makes good, is SO GOOD, that makes the bad things simple and small.

IMO this is a 10/10 game.

While I agree that the first game is a masterpiece, Part 2 is even more so for me on so many levels... This game indeed has a very controversial story, but it makes perfect sense to me and I understand the decisions that the characters have made. Also, the parallel storytelling is absolutely genius, and it plays with my emotions so much. Then there's environment and gameplay, which are definitely elevated from the first game and then some.

Now let's get onto the real SPOILER heavy portion of this review...

    ===Story===
Naughty Dog wanted to make a game with a theme of vengeance, and they did just that. The whole game is surrounded by vengeance, and what people are willing to do to fulfill that. In my opinion, the story and character reactions were complicated but never out of place, even though sometimes they can be very overwhelming. I won’t dive too deep into the plot, but I do want to address two main arguments that fans are having.

First of all, I would like to say that killing off a beloved character simply does not mean a story is bad. I understand people's feeling are hurt, since someone you love so much from the first game got brutally killed. But let’s be honest, Joel is not a hero. While this doesn’t mean he should die (especially in such way), you cannot say his death is not justified, especially that he killed someone's father, and essentially ruined the chance of a cure for the human race.

Now let's move on to the main playable characters. Ellie was set on a quest to seek revenge because her father(-figure) was murdered, and she went on every length to accomplish that, which is what most of the players want to do after witnessing Joel's death. But when it comes to Abby, whose father was killed by Joel, also set on a quest to seek revenge, I noticed many people are suddenly not okay with that. Honestly, I think Abby's action is just as justified as Ellie's, the difference is that Joel's death is personal to the players, but Jerry (Abby's father)'s is not.

    ===Storytelling===
Storytelling might be my favorite part of the game because it gives the players different perspectives. When I played as Ellie and Abby, I get to see their personal life, and experience their thoughts and memories separately. At a certain part of the game, I have to go to the same area twice, but as different characters. When I first played as Ellie, I didn't think much and just by default eliminated everyone in that area; but later, as I play as Abby (timeline wise Abby gets there earlier than Ellie so everyone's still alive), I get to talk to them and interact with them. While this doesn't make me feel entirely "guilty" that Ellie has killed them all (since they are obstacles to her goal), it added a personal touch to that story and gameplay, knowing these are Abby’s friends (and fur-friends) and they are just doing their job.

The parallel storytelling in this game makes me think a lot more than other games. It turned an otherwise linear revenge story into something much deeper and much more human. I equally love Ellie and Abby at the end of the game because I see them both as human, instead of two game characters who are blessed by the creators, I feel their loss and pain, and I understand why they made all the decisions.

    ===Environment and Gameplay===
I will not spend too much time on this other than saying the game is gorgeous but brutal, and the combat is super fun yet can be extremely challenging (especially a certain new clicker).

Frankly, I don't write reviews much, but with the tremendous hate that this game has gotten, I feel a need to express my opinions (hence certain parts of this review are more of my reaction). Of course, Naughty Dog can just make another game of a cross-country tour featuring Ellie and Joel that's filled with love, and people would be happy. But I admire what Naughty Dog has crafted. It's a very dark, intense, complicated, and controversial story; but through the gameplay, I feel a much stronger emotion towards the story and much deeper connection to the characters than I excepted.

This is a game that I would highly recommend anyone to EXPERIENCE firsthand, rather than just be an observer or just storm through the plot. There will be times that you feel happy and loved through the characters’ eyes, but also moments to drown in shock, hatred, and revenge. Afterall, they are human in a post-apocalyptic world, and they are all just trying to survive.

Expand

Horrible bait and switch marketing. Story lacks logic, making the gameplay feel hollow and pointless. Why would I keep on going in playing this, when the driving force of the game is its story, which its as weak as its ever been. For a sequel, you have to live up to expectations and surpass the originals. See the Metal Gear franchise.

The critics on some story beats may be justified but for me felt so minor in the scope of the whole thing! I could connect to the main characters but you have to bring a ton of empathy and general interest for a story with consequences and unconventional pacing into it. (The pacing is actually the only thing I would have wished were different). Overall great experience which should not be missed.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
