This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The 1 is for the graphics, that's the only good part of this game. Gameplay's pretty much the same from The Last of Us 1, no revolutionary way they made it more fun. Now, onto why it's terrible, the story's beyond **** Joel is the hero everyone adores from the first game, the way they killed him was terrible, he's supposed to be a seasoned veteran in no world would he be that stupid to die because he was too careless. Joel kills Abby's father, that's why Abby kills Joel, that reason was revealed so much later that it should've been, what we got was Joel saves Abby's life then Abby brutally murders him. That alone makes everyone hate Abby, then for them to make us PLAY as Abby for hours and hours is pathetic. Expand

É um ótimo jogo, as mecânicas são ótimas, os personagens são bons, o que pode estragar a experiência e o final mas esse jogo não merece uma nota menor do que essa.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start with the obvious, no game is perfect. But many people seem to be overly negative, and I think this game is definitely a 9.8

To begin, I'd summarize this game to be the perfect sequel to what it meant, Joel's selfish deadly love act to keep Ellie.
You learn to see a story through your own eyes, if you know why you made a bad choice you can justify it. Sure you wouldn't want others to do it, but you were different. You had a good reason.
The game dives into this quite hard, and this will hit like a sledge hammer. Any writer should be proud to have written something so meaningful. Everything build together so wonderfully.

Music was always linked to Joel, and by the end, Ellie has learned Joel's love, and his anger. Loosing her musical fingers severs her from music, now what that means exactly is up to yourself, to me it seems like it allows her to grief. But to you that may mean something different, and that's a great key of writing, the meaning depends on your experience. But it's a tough thing for sure to involve yourself in this story. My hat is off to the writers though.

The story has went a new way of story telling. The ending is not a happy ending but its like okay **** what did I in the last 25-30 hours?! Was it worth? Another point is that the last 3 hours of playing the game is not such good as in the begining oder middle. Expand

Every thing is really good . About story , it could be better but the writer used a diffrent method of telling the story and that when you finish the game make you love it or hate it . I loved that cuz it show us a halfway story in the first and countinue it to complate it in the end in a new and maybe a nice method . But the destiny of some chracters maybe not good for every but it is what happend in a fully vengeans way and its what the writer want .

The good: The graphics clearly pushed the industry forward, but I would argue that Death Stranding accomplished the same quality so I don't give it many points for being a tech demo.
The meh: Gameplay is rehashed and polished from the first game but still feels dated. The forced political choices more interested in pushing a message than creating a good game.
    The bad: I'll break this
The good: The graphics clearly pushed the industry forward, but I would argue that Death Stranding accomplished the same quality so I don't give it many points for being a tech demo.
The meh: Gameplay is rehashed and polished from the first game but still feels dated. The forced political choices more interested in pushing a message than creating a good game.
The bad: I'll break this down as best I can but TLDR the story and characters fundamentally fail on nearly every aspect. So spoilers ahead.
    1. Lets talk about the elephant in the room, Abby kills Joel within the first few hours of gameplay due to his brothers frankly ridiculous mistake of sharing his full name. This is the decades through the apocalypse survivor who wouldn't be the slightest bit cautious when he knew people were looking for him... Evidently.
    2. Shifting perspectives, after Joel is killed we eventually get to play as Abby... for ten hours... What I like many others did was run the killer right into a clicker as I'm sure many others did. Why? Because I played through an entire game that I loved as the character that Abby unceremoniously murdered. I am made to feel over time that Joel was a bad guy for dismantling the Fireflies. But issues with that.
1.1 If you listen through the first games recordings they had many other cases where they thought they could create a vaccine with. All of them were killed, none of them produced a vaccine, Ellie very well could have been killed for nothing.
1.2 Worse yet, it is impossible to create a vaccine with that small of a team in that small of a facility, on a global scale it would take 1-10 years based purely on how lucky they got.
1.3 And the final most important reason, I didn't care when I did it. I care about the little girl who Joel had been taking care of for the past couple dozen hours of my life. Do I care about the people who would just as readily shoot as help me, no.
    3. Really weird sex scene out of nowhere in the middle of the game while other Sony products are bashed for having 'sexy' outfits.
    4. The lazy attempt to make me understand Abby, the villain in my humble opinion, just by throwing me in their shoes. This is contrived to make the story complex and powerful, but instead becomes a lazy way to extend gameplay. When thinking about ways to do this better I thought of Horizon Zero Dawn, Helis's tent had the logs inside which was given a bit lazier than spreading them out to piece together over time, but it was still a way to understand someone who killed the father figure without empathizing with them. This doesn't do that, this says hey you know how Ellie is a rage ball of revenge, well here's another rage ball of revenge empathize with her over the one you spent the whole last game and the lions share of this game with.
    5. Finally the ending "Boss" fight. You play as Abby not Ellie, you are not allowed to get Abby killed. Abby almost kills Ellie's pregnant girlfriend and says good when she learns that fact. (I don't care that Ellie inadvertently killed her pregnant friend.) Then once again at the actual ending you track down Abby have her underwater about to die when suddenly, oh violence bad comes in and suddenly hey I know I've killed hundreds of people to get here but yeah lets let them go. Then they have the balls to have a cut scene with Joel just to make you really regret spending money on this tech demo written as a tumblr fanfiction trying to be deep but instead being shallow and infuriating.
This isn't undertale, this isn't dishonored, and this isn't Detroit Become Human. This isn't a pacifist game going into the issues of violence. It's a revenge game and with all the set up to this point you can't just say violence bad and end it. Kill Abby give the player that catharsis, then give them the time to reflect on it after. It would make you wonder if the revenge was worth all the bodies left behind in a world already in an apocalypse, ponder if Joel would have wanted it, and whether you can live with the emptiness it leaves behind. But instead this game left me hollow, it broke my heart not that Joel died but that he died in such a stupid way. And it destroyed me to have to watch such a great studio as Naughty Dog who created some of my favorite games, burn because of terrible writing. It's the end of an era with this game and I hope it can regain glory but for now it looks like it will go down in a whimper and I'm so disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm about 15 hours into the game and the gameplay is GREAT, but the story seems a bit forced.... It's very unbelievable that Tommy (a bad ass ex firefly and Hitman that killed thousands of infected and militia) and Joel ("the madman" that killed thousands of people with ease and lived over 30 years in the apocalypse without much trouble) gets themselves killed from a handful of Wolf's... And alongside that, ellie had more than enough time to pull the trigger after opening the door. This all seems like it's forced upon the player to just accept it because it is what it is... And they wanted a revenge story that's not fitting to the story what so ever. I love the gameplay, I like the new characters, I don't mind the romance, buuuuuut it could have all happened with Joel.... The story just seems rushed, which is strange, because they had more than enough time to create one fitting to the first part. Call it a theory, but I would bet money on it that they had a different story and mid development they had/wanted to change it. I will continue to enjoy the game, but Mr. Niel should respect the fans that aren't gay bashing the game and accept our honest opinions! Expand

A good continuation to the masterpiece that is Last of us. Graphics, animations, map design and sound is superb, best in any game out there right now. Story is okay but the pacing is unfortunately a bit iffy. Which drags down the score to an 8.

Actually my note would be a 7 out of 10 but it is not correct, the game takes you from one side to the other. You have to understand that humanity is always disgusting for it "Truth Is Stronger Than Fiction" and although this closely resembles Reality does not leave it for you or me, it has several flaws in empathy towards the characters.

Except I Saw the Devil doesn't bottle it at the end. Any poignancy TLoU2 tried to have on its fresh take of vengeance is lost in the pure fact that Ellie is forced to kill countless people in the pursuit of her vengeance on Abby, which in the end is moot.

With that in mind and TLoU2's absolute shoddy judgement of what revenge can do, along with repercussions of past sins, you can expect, I'm sure, an onslaught of sequels and DLC to follow each characters off-spring all seeking vengeance on Ellie John Wick 2 style.

The graphics look great, although nowhere near the best. The technical aspects of the game and animations absolutely shine. The gameplay is aged, not that far different from the first, and not an improvement on similar games like Tomb Raider.

Story is a middle finger to the first game.

This game is more of a 5/10 but rated it 0 in response to the deluge of perfect 10's people are giving it and the blind-sided media bias to give the game perfect scores. Less than a handful of score based reviews have actually critically reviewed the game and have instead opted to champion progressiveness at the expense of shining a light on its shortcomings. It begs to question if this game was not as inclusive as it is (and therefore in need of protecting) how earnestly reviewers would have been in regards to the games glitches, dated gameplay, insult to characters and the fans of those characters, and the pretentious plot which has been done to death in much better ways.

What's worse is the media campaign to silence the voices of the FANS who care about these things, and instead to paint a huge brush over everyone is some sort of phobe or russian bot. It's not okay for fans to be disgruntled at a game and give low scores, but it would have been perfectly fine for the cowardly media (don't want to be blacklisted or to be seen as going against progressiveness!) to spew 10/10's all over the place without any questioning as to why?

Joel, just like Luke, gets completely s**t on just to "subvert expectations", a slap in the face of all fans of TLOU part 1. Most of the new characters are uninteresting and by halfway through the gameplay gets really repetitive. Which leaves us with the story, a pointless revenge story without the big payoff. I don't know what they were thinking when they wrote this, but they clearly missed the mark, at least with fans of the original. A low score is given for ruining and killing off one of the most beloved and interesting characters without even giving him a proper ending or purpose. Yes the game is stunning, the visuals, the audio, the mechanics and design just beautiful, really amazing work. BUT the story....its a mess. Yes I didn't like the story but if it really was the story they needed to tell ND could have done it better. We deserved better after 7 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To everyone saying that the story is bad. Incorrect, the narrative is bad. Get your head on straight. Joel is not a good person and wether you like it or not, he was eventually going to pay for his actions anyway. The world is still realistic enough that it still makes sense. Going out of your way to leave a bad review on a game that you clearly haven’t played all the way through is wrong. Now, I get that people are mad at the ending as well... And Abby. But to explain Abby, yes, I hate how you play nearly the rest of the game as her just as you were starting to have fun with Ellie. This is were the NARRATIVE is wrong, not the story. By shoving you in to play a character you hate, and making her seem likable, it’s hard to play that portion of the game. The only way they could have fixed this is by splitting the Ellie and Abby scenes up leading to them meeting up together. The next thing is that the ending is bad. It’s questionable and symbolic, yes, but not bad. I’m not saying it’s great either but there are some thing you need to realize. Symbolism is a big feature in this game. The moth (one of the key symbols) is to display how moths are attracted to light, which kills them, just how Ellie is attracted to revenge, it takes everything away from her, just as it also took Abby’s friends. But the symbolic ending isn’t that Ellie was trying to avenge Joel, she was trying to find peace instead, which is why she spares Abby when she forgives Joel (the last flashback). The ending also isn’t as sad as you may think. As many people have pointed out, Ellie has her bracelet that Dina gave her AFTER the fight with Abby at the end, but not when she left to go find her. All of Ellie’s stuff is also gone from the house except a few paintings and anything related to Joel. This is most likely to show that she is still with Dina in Jackson but has come to finally let Joel rest (leaving all of his stuff behind and his guitar). She does this by playing the first notes of Joel’s song, and then leaves into the woods. If I were to guess, a Part III would be a sort of redemption arc that will hopefully not make the same mistakes this game did. Final note, to touch on bs arguments, here:
LGBTQ-guys, it’s 2020, move on and get over it.
Abby has BIg aRmS-Really? What argument is that, it’s kinda sexist and I would suggest looking up the person they modeled Abby’s body for.
Politics-Sure, it makes the game bad, but it doesn’t. If you want politics, watch the first game. FEDRA vs FireFlies is the definition of politics.
    Religion-I mean... ok?
Boring to play-there are difficulty settings...

Closing note: this game isn’t bad but it’s not the best thing on the planet. If this game were to be for everyone’s expectations, it would be boring. It would make the entire game guessable if it was what somebody wants. Also, this game follows the same act story that the first game had. A person sets out on a journey to complete a task ultimately changing their mind in the end. I’m talking about the first game here, not the second.

You kill Joel in 2 hours and replace him with a character we don’t even know or have any real backstory too who the fu** hired these writer wtaf. But all right I get it make something new keep us on our seats and guessing but at least make a Coherent story and character arc. Lastly I have one final thing to say to naughty dog studios , why are you making games political.Honesty what did you think would happen especially in today’s current political climate. Your literally putting a wedge between you and half or your customers. Keep your political views out of video games plain and simple. You know most people probably more than 3/4 of the people have nothing against lgbt persons and don’t mind them being in a game as main characters but to say that we are all racist, bigots for not liking the Obviously Flawed Story and your use of editing to make it appear that we would be playing with Ellie and Joel again is wrong and probably illegal. Final words if naughty dog does nothing about ND and there writing team I guarantee you will no longer get any of my business. Expand

I loved the game. The gemaplay as wel as the story. It's intriguing and the people that are spreading hate, are not capable of thinking while their playing.
Yes the game forces you to play through parts you're hesitant to play but it al compliments the story. And if you don't like the story, that's okay, I think you're not duploto 'like it', but that doesn't mean it's a bad game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story had its faults but the gameplay is actually challenging and fun. The environments and music are hauntingly beautiful. Overall, I was immersed until the end.

I do have a few things to mention about the story. I honestly really enjoyed this method of story-telling, playing as both Ellie and Abby and experiencing their memories and dreams/nightmares. Unlike a lot of people on here, I feel like I was able to completely sympathize with Abby. Like come on, I loved Joel after the first game, but he really did make a stupidly selfish move taking Ellie and killing all those Fireflies. I will say the cycle of violence in this game was not super satisfying to play through. And I wouldn’t say I feel satisfied at all with the ending. I think I would have really enjoyed seeing a sequel where Ellie works to reclaim the decision to give her life for a vaccine with Joel by her side, searching for another doctor/group of doctors that could engineer the cure. But that doesn’t mean I am disappointed with their decision to have Joel killed. I enjoyed playing as Abby and getting the chance to sympathize with both sides but in the end it just felt like a lot of the things I did as both characters were completely pointless in relation to how things ended. And I get that that may have been the point, but if this is really going to be the last of The Last of Us, I would really have preferred to leave the franchise satisfied.

Nevertheless, I don’t feel like it’s fair of me to hate on the writers and the studio for putting out this game. Yes I did wait 7 years, and yes I wasn’t completely satisfied, but I don’t think that gives me the entitlement to be a pos on social media to the people that worked their asses off to get this game through. Most of the people running their mouths have no idea what it’s like to work behind the scenes on these games, me included, so that is why I choose to be a decent person and make the best of what I’ve been given. So thanks ND for another great experience overall!

Also, for all the bigots on here hating cause of the game being “too political” by having gay and trans main characters, kindly **** off. Maybe you should have waited until you were mature enough to handle real characters before playing the game. Otherwise don’t fund the studio producing inclusive content you can’t bear to tolerate and don’t ****ing play the game. Or maybe don’t be a goddamn fool choosing to post a rating when you’ve not actually finished the game. Simple as that.

No logic at all in the entire story plus some forced SJW BS all the way, like the most important thing in the time of an apocalypse is some lesbian drama, dafuq? Again SJW destroys everything it touches, this was so great franchise and now it is just forever dead cause even the hundreds of the good sequels won't fix that damage done in this one.

I think TLOU 2 is a game that is very difficult to talk about, because it is the experience of each player that is important here - everyone has a different experience. For me, the brainchild of Naughty Dog is a piece of work that cannot be evaluated by any assessment, it must be passed in person (not on YouTube!). The only thing that can be said for sure is that we will not see such an epoch-making work in all senses for a long time. And yet-for me, this is a candidate for the Game of the Year.
    SECOND: leaks, scandals, Metacritic score.
If there's one thing I've learned from all the hype surrounding The Last Of Us Part II, it's that if people on the Internet want to hate something, they'll do it, nothing will stop them. No arguments, facts, etc.
Well, OK, you can continue to "Kill" the game, the result of hard work of the whole Studio.... And I will go on to pass, get a lot of emotions, enjoy a lot of small details, follow the plot, and then even "New Game +" start.
I just can't understand, me and an army of Hyper-satisfied people, are we really playing the same game? Why do I understand, motivations, actions, why does it not interfere with the orientation of Ellie and Abby's appearance, why do plot twists seem appropriate and logical?.... Is it I'm crazy enough that I like it, or the INTERNET?
How I sympathize with Drachmann..... What he feels? I think seeing a score of 4.9 points, reading like that, etc., is not the most pleasant thing on Earth.....
You know, no one paid me money for my opinion, but I fully support and understand the decision to make an unusual sequel, Yes, it was controversial, but it's cool! This means that it can be discussed, analyzed, and thought about. Is this not an indicator of a good work, the result of CREATIVITY and effort? Do you think that an abstract "correct" continuation would be better? Most likely, we would get a "cotton", "Safe" something that would be like chewing gum without taste, it would just be boring....
Third (and most important): Respect Drachmann, Respect To Naughty Dog!

I'm glad to see a game that fleshes out gray moral concepts. At first I was disappointed playing Abby for half the game. Then as the game progressed all I could do was empathize for for the both of them. At times I didn't know whom I was rooting for and I'm refreshed Naughty Dog would take such a risk. As a fan I had to almost Ignore what had happened to enjoy this game.To start off, I have to agree it wasn't the wisest decision to execute the MOST iconic character in the first game known as our Joel, so early on into the game. As a fan I had to almost Ignore what had happened to enjoy this game. Fortunetly it does get better later on after the event. Yes the story does fall short in some cases and is filled with plot holes, I do not agree with the direction of the game like everyone else, yet you cannot deny the attempt, vision and effort they tried putting into this game. It's mainly surrounding the hatred and vengeance, which drives to conclude nothing in the end because of all the loss both Ellie and Abby suffered through because of hate.

In conclusion, not all of it is terrible, many scenes are memorable. Feeling the emotional spark from the voice actors, the animations and voice acting to the small whispers and deep breaths. The BEAUTIFUL world and art direction is just fantastic especially on an OLED tv paired with the PS4 Pro. The relationship with Dina and Ellie is high class and finally the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie is what kept me playing this game.

Wish they also had such perfectionists regarding the story. The characters can be considered among the most bland in the gaming industry. You can‘t help but it really feels like the „second main protagonist“ had been created as a vessel to carry the message of the self-proclaimed „anti-sexist“ movement, which actually turns out to be a misandrist movement, especially with a strong bias against caucasian white males, and the idea that such are „overrepresented“ anywhere, may it be film or games, apart from other redundant reproaches like „damsel in distress“.

Whoever enjoyed Star Wars Episode 7-9 might get along with the character development in this game. Whoever „made friends“ with Joel and Ellie in the first game. I strongly suggest to stay away from this game.

    Pros
Very entertaining and engaging gameplay, good improvements from the first game
    Undeniably amazing graphics
    Great performances like always
    Great music
Good level design for the most part, once again good improvements from the first game.

    Cons
    Unlikeable characters
    Poor pacing
    Terrible story

The game and trailers try to use shock value to make the Joel death scene that much more painful to watch, using shock value tactics and intentionally changing what occurs in trailers further proves this. The issue is not the fact that Joel died it's how he died, by trusting a stranger and giving away sensitive information to then be brutally beaten. This completely goes against his character and feels very lazy. Furthermore, I can't begin to understand how the writers thought that players would feel compassion for a new character (Abby) that brutally beat a character from the first game that everyone loved (Joel) who just saved her life. Any attempt to try to create compassion for Abby was a failure and was very forced. There are many other glaring issues with Abby's part including the trip to the hospital to get medical supplies which was very drawn out and pointless, and her part in general being much longer than it had to be. The ending was atrocious, Ellie left her comfortable life with her girlfriend to track down Abby(again), to then fight her (again), and then let her go. After killing all of Abby's friends, losing friends of her own and just getting her fingers bitten off did Ellie have a cliche realization that " Revenge bad" " Forgiveness good" I'm sorry what? I would have much preferred for the game to have ended at the farm with Ellie, Dina and the baby.

The challenge is in confronting anger, rage, and vengeance, however well warranted and to see the consequences and to feel the weight of irrevocable decisions, even when those decisions didn't have a viable alternative.

This game is about violence. And it is about pain. And it is about the loss of identity in giving yourself over to rage. If you are a STAN for characters over story you will probably not like this game, however beautifuly and impressively designed its imagery, graphics, details. This game is gorgeous. And with so few hiccups to execution that the most significant impact to my playthrough was my own obsessive compulsive need to conserve ammunition and to execute my tqctical plans as expertly and perfectly as possible - leading to many reloads when I as a player executed less than perfectly.

The game's sound design is atmospheric, and haunting and paranoia-inducing as much as the first Last of Us. The use of audio cues to indicate when your actions risked observation were downright anxiety provoking. The creature performances are absolutely frightening so much so that when stalkers become silent you the player become even more terrified and paranoid.

The gameplay, while a bit on rails as expected, does give you big open playgrounds at times which helps to alleviate the feeling of being constrained alkng a linear path hurtling towards conclusion, there truly are moments where you can stop to just appreciate the incredibly detailed environments. In my playthrough I encountered no technical glitches or game-breaking hard stops at all. I never encountered a consumable or acquireable I could not pick up. I never got stuck in a wall or door. And the camera did a fantastic job of positioning itself intuitively. While there wasn't a clear satsifying button push to lock you into the use of cover, the game does a WONDERFUL truly genre-defining job of having the character models KNOW when they are in proximity to a hard surfsce. There were times I didn't feel as in cover as I would have liked, and there is no mechanism for leaningx so often "peeking " involves actually exposing yourself to some degree, the game is actually very forgiving in this and I never felt like my choices were punished by some of the less precise tactical movements.

Gameplay choices are consistent with the original, included the still-baffling choice that at least one character has to manufacture shivs in order to have a stabbing weapon when, 20 years-on, a fightning knife should seem de rigeur for a post-apocalyptic infectious disease zombie outbreak. Improvements to melee weapons are often little more than aesthetic and their design for arguing that they have been improved continues to beg the question of "Really? How does duct tapping half a pruning shear to a lead pipe make it any more effective or sturdy?" - a mechanic I think could've been tossed, but again, not inconsistent for the series.

Characters... so much to say about characters and almost all of it spoilers. The characters give weight to the consequences of decisions that are made throughout the game. This game makes an extraordinarily bold choice - one that I think many of the fans giving negative reviews fail to connect with the original story, even though the parallel is clear. The Last of Us does not have heroes. It isn't a game about heroes. Joel's actions at the end of The Last Of Us were heroic or villainous depending on your point of view, the same is true of Marlene. The post-apocalyptic nightmare world of cordyceps parasitism is a harsh world of survival and of violence and of killing. Often, as in the original, the most dangerous confrontations aren't with the creatures, they are with other survivors. The morality of confronting a kill-or-be-killed world where an act of vengeance can bring a living nightmare to life beyond the ever present fungal threat makes this game all too human. The most challenging thing about this game is that it asks us to confront ourselves. To allow ourselves to be taken to a point of raw emotional rage and pain and then to objectively see ourselves in the light of that for the monster in ourselves. By the end of the game I just wanted the violent cycle to end. I wanted there to be some future not bound by pain.

Naughty Dog CRUSHES it. They take you on a journey. And its lesson is humanity.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
