This game would be a masterpiece if not for narrative, pacing and inauthentic/flat characters.Some of the plot holes are astounding - is this really a Naughty Dog game?. So much fantastic work went into supporting this pretentious plot that tries so hard to be subversive and unexpected without providing any substance first.     I loved how the story made you question the motives of loved characters - it really shows that no one is good or evil, these characters are just trying to survive in the apocalyptic world the best they can and protect those they love... even if it means being destroyed by revenge in the process. I loved Abby and thought it was a great addition to play as her.

First 12 hours shows Ellies revenge and after that we play as Ebby 10 hours... I think better play in turn as Ellie and Ebby. We understand motivation of both characters, but in the first fight of both charecters, I had questions - "What just happend? I've just played as Abby... and why?? Game needed showed only 1 hour for Abby and what she is going to do and other 25 hours gameplay as Ellie! Why??". Gameplay as Abby at the fifth hour became SO BORING. I didn't care about asian kids, but I understood, Neil wanted show, how Abby becaming better. I thought we will see something new... but we get **** by Naughty Dog. They added couple monsters and dogs... Ok new aim for bow it is that, what I've really like of new things. I replayed first part and after that completed second part and there is only 1 big difference is graphic. I waited for that final, what I thought. For me Joel revealed more selfish, end of first game is not right and Joel standed him. Main problem is, than you play and play, but you get bored and start play another game. I can say 1 thing - TLOU2 is boring game, but with right end.… Expand

    I played the game for 25 hours, went through the whole story, discovered a lot of achievements, and after the credits, I was happy with the project. I hope in a couple of years, there will be a sequel, because I wonder what happened next, what happened to Abby and Ellie.

    Let's get right into what the game got right. Right from the start you can tell that blood, sweat and tears were put into this game. The game is absolutely stunning when it comes to its graphics and cutscenes. From little details like characters playing with their fingers, to nervously shaking their leg. The emotions characters can envoke through their facial expressions and live eyeLet's get right into what the game got right. The emotions characters can envoke through their facial expressions and live eye movements is incredible, something that I see a lot of games lack. The actors do a tremendous job in bringing these characters, old and new, to life in the game's cutscenes and conversations. The atmosphere can really be felt here in almost every area of the game. Even the smallest sound can make you quickly paranoid. Every footstep, glass smashed and shot fired sounds good. The soundtrack of the game is great, although dramatically underused. When it comes to gameplay, I feel like they have built upon it enough for it to be satisfying and fun for the most part. This game is meant to be played on Survival difficulty, if you really want to experience the desperateness of your every move and struggle for survival. Every shot missed is an opportunity lost. The scarcity of the resources make you cherish what you craft and how to best use it to your advantage. At times the choices have to be made quickly with no time to contemplate, adding to the experience.

    Now come all the things the game has not done very well. Right of the bat the game decides to go in a direction that changes the atmosphere from then to the end. It never feels the same after the first few hours. The events that happen are not handled very well as the game doesn't let you sink your teeth back into the returning characters. The game mostly focuses on the new characters, dramatically, affecting the way you feel about returning ones at times. Even after knowing that the actors have done a great job some scenes and dialogue seem to fall flat at times. Not making sense, or doing and/or saying something totally out of character. You don't spend much time with the characters you would like to spend time with. Story doesn't seem to be as sharply written, and that really hits hard.

    The back half of the game makes you play as this new character that I didn't care much about. Finding myself bored throughout the second half of the game. Although they introduce a handful of characters, I did not care for any of them as well as for the story they were telling. It turned into a game that I just wanted to be over and done with. Although, I do think that people that have never played the first game could find this game extremely fun from start to finish and enjoy the story. I see what they were trying to go for in this game, but it just did not hit the mark. For me, it's a one and done.    … Expand

    Lets begin with the story . IT WAS REALLY BAD this kind of storytelling didn't work with tlou world and they changed so much attributes of our beloved characters just to make it work but it sucked
    the ending was really unsatisfying and a pain in the ass to watch with no character development to achieve it
    The graphics and gameplay design were great though the gameplay half of the game will force you to play with some character for no reason and it felt wrong cringy and uncomfortable

    Eu esperei muito tempo por essa continuação e foi decepcionante. A historia tomou um rumo lamentável, matou dodos os feitos do Joel, e transformando a existência dela em um cara qualquer e o final foi pior que eu imaginava, conseguiram estragar completamente a historia, que tinha um potencial incrível, mas tomou um rumo que deixou totalmente a temática zumbi pós apocalipse.

    My main criticism of the game would be that I found the hand to hand combat a little clunky and there was a bit if a glitch with journal entries not registering. The guitar parts were cool but a little repetitive by the end. Apart from this I think it was a really good game. I would play a third if it came out.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OMG. When I firsly looked at this game, I couldn't believe, that it could be so dull. But here it is. What's worse - it gets worse, when you spend more time with it.
    I get it - post apo USA (because USA, Russia and Ukraine long time ago are only countries that exists in the world), destroyed cities, lack of supplies, lack of healthy population etc.
    But God damn it. Story is really dumb - people just fight with each other and kill, not only infected, but healthy and normal people as well. For no real reason. As a main character you are FORCED to kill in most cases - seriously, what the hell? Even in games, where you were a soldier (like Crysis) or gangsta (like gta series) there were at least options to NOT KILL EVERYTHING IN SIGHT? 19 yo girl has more bloodlust and hunger for killing, than some psycho freak like Trevor from GTA5.

    World itself is so unlogical - cities are being vanished from healthy people for around 20 years. Yet there are still fuel in tanks of the cars, power generators still runs after 2-3 pushes of starter (despite being in one place for so many years). Not to even mention closed and linear sections, made there because...I don't really know why. Only the first part with horsing around in Seattle looks and feels good - just like games in 2020 should look like. Don't tell me that You cannot put open world into 2020 game, when you can do that to improve gameplay.

    Characters? Very shallow and just boring. They propose next to ANYTHING, that they could do to memorise them. Ok, maybe 2 scenes might stay in your mind, but both of them are hard connected with sex, so I'm not sure, if this is the way to do so. Besides that - npcs and playable characters doesn't offer anything, even above average (not to mention good level or top-tier lvl). They are expressionless, they are boring, they cannot even say something, that could be remembered later, than 20 minutes from now on.

    Story itself just sucks. Ok, I get it, after 5 virtual years many things could have changed, got it. But there are so many different (and better) ways to tell this, than stuff that we have in this game. I got lost before half of the game, where we do have to redo past, and when we have to focus on current time and current set of events. It's is poorly mixed, if you want to have good retrospection, look into Max Payne 3 for example - non forced, swift and quick transition between current timeline and the past, short explanation and back to (hi)story we go. Here? Some weird and unnecessary pauses, some minigames in qte style (why?), longer pauses and then some magic timewrap.

    Next issue - motivation of the characters. It is stupid, nothing to say more would make me feel better about this. Ellie is simply very naive and dull. And this was supposed to be DEEP GAME, THAT GIVE YOU UNFORGETABLE EMOTIONS, WHEN YOU PLAY IT. After hearing most of the jokes I got feeling to leave my desk and go for a walk, that's how poor they are. Most "thinked through" decisions makes me think about the same stuff, but this time even for longer period without game itself. As far as I can understand some reasons to go out and travel (or maybe to seek for something), I totally don't get the whole conflict stuff in this game. People simply kill each other for no good reason. Young adult become uber blood-lusted killer, because someone killed her friend. Ok, got it, revenge tastes good. But what's the idea of revenge, if your only objective is to kill everything in sight?

    Lack of logic in this game is terrific. Really, much older titles had npcs with better motivation - Witcher, Kingdome Come, whole Dark Souls series, not to even mention some proper storytelling games like TLOU1, This war of mine, Walking dead etc. Most of them had some bigger and smaller issues, but here we punched in the face with idiocity on scale, that I haven't seen in a videogame for a long period of time.

    I don't know, maybe I'm just too stupid for this kind of experience, but I just feel more and more retarded when I watch it and play it. That way of storytelling was ok-ish 10 years ago, we could forgive that 20 years ago, but if games wants to be in 1 line with movies and books, they simply have to be better (more logical and more reasoned) than this. Game looks nice (not super, but graphical side is not something, that you should be ashamed of), music is ok (nothing very good, but I guess being uniritating also counts). Atmosphere would be amazing, if only the game and characters weren't so dumb - it really has got potential. But due to irritating caps for ammo (without upgrade you cannot take more, than 12 pistol rounds and 3 medkids, which is a joke, character WEARS GODDAMN BACKPACK), it is boring more often than satysfying.

    Even the whole lesbian story isn't hurting me that much, as lack of proper gamedev do. They copied old solutions, pack them into nice package, prepaid reviews and voila, this should be great game. But it isn't. Don't waste your time.    … Expand

    If they haven’t beaten the first game, they’ve definitely matched it. The story, gameplay, acting and character development are outstanding. The team have worked hard and the whole game was an enormous rollercoaster of an emotional experience. Bravo Naughty Dog.

    Dazu ist die Grafik für ein ps4 Spiel einfach unglaublich, und diese Detailverliebtheit von ND ist wie immer einfach grandios.

    Dazu liebe ich es wie tiefgründig der neue Charakter, Abby gezeichnet ist. Ich habe gegen Ende emphatie für sie entwickelt und wollte so das keiner stirbt.

    Absolute masterpiece, enjoyed the game thoroughly. Only reason i didn’t give it a 10 was the pacing in the last couple of hours, wish it ended at the farm. Everything from the smooth gameplay and stunning graphics was perfect.

The first reason I give it that score is because it is a pretty good plot and I don't understand why there is a problem with Ellie being a lesbian. Are The Last of Us Part 2 players homophobic? On the left behind DLC, it says so. Didn't they play it? Or they just do that to a game expected by many of us for 7 years. Why do they do it? Game over? Or did they leave him when Joel dies? I don't understand with their discontent with the game, if their game is very good, their story is very good, why do they do it? Or do they not like to play with Abby because they have to fight against Ellie? It shows us the two sides of the coin that exists in the game.

    I love games with intense stories and this game has just joined my top 5 favorite games of all time, which includes the first game in the series. Most of the negative criticism lies either in prejudice against a gay protagonist, or in the fact that in place of the characters, they would make some different choice.     This is one of the best games out there today hands down. The second half of the game when you switch I absolutely loved this game and so did my whole family. After beating this game and getting the platinum in it I haven’t been able to play other games due to not being able to find a game that had the gameplay and story like this one did. With all the hate about the LGQBT stuff. Yes it is in there but it does not shove it down your throat. It feels like it belongs and I felt it was done naturally and very well. Don’t listen to all the haters out there who have nothing better to do but try to trash a masterpiece due to their own ignorance.     The developers, the actors, they're all so talented. But they all work for a company that disrespects them AND their customers.

    And then, there are the unanimous critic reviews. Apparently, this game is perfect, period. Anyone who lives (so, literally EVERYONE) knows that perfection does NOT exist. It just doesn't. So how come that game be perfect? It CAN'T.
    Which just shows what is happening behind the scenes. It doesn't take a lot of braincells to understand. The critic reviews were entirely paid. You do know bribery is supposed to be illegal, right?

    Anyway, back to the game. It's so long it gets boring. It just drags on and on and on. At some point it feels like the end, but nope, here we go again for a few more hours.
    It tries to tell a non-linear story, but the changes of time are so random it's just annoying.
    And the story... Dude! What have they done to my beloved characters??? Joel is extremely stupid, whereas he was a cold-blooded clever man before. Ellie is a monster for no other reason than shock value. Her bloodthirst is NOT justified by revenge. It's just not how humans work. People don't go on a rampage just to get revenge. That's a cliché that just doesn't happen. It's a shame because TLOU characters were so realistic and believable. In this game, they're not.
    The revenge plot is an overused trope, and TLOU2 brings NOTHING to that idea. But worse than that, the end of the game utterly DESTROYS the message that "revenge is bad". Yeah: they managed to fail a cliché message! How can you be so incompetent?

    Unlike the positive reviews who pretend there's nothing wrong, I won't pretend there's nothing right. From a technical standpoint, again, it's a masterpiece. There are a few scenes that are actually good: the introduction that sums up the end of the first game, and some flashbacks of Ellie and Joel.

    TLOU is remembered for its beloved characters in a simple but effective story. TLOU2 will be remembered as the symbol of everything wrong in the current industry: games now are a marketing ploy, and the politicians that now govern the industry simply don't care about the game, nor about their developers, nor about their customers.    … Expand

But, I was wrong and I am so happy to say this is an another masterpiece of a game that every person should expirience once in their live. Then at the end of the movie John Wick decides not to kill him for no reason at all. That’s TLOU2 in a nutshell. An utter travesty and desecration of the characters we all loved. Zero character development, forgettable characters, massive plot holes, unbelievable decisions, and lazy storytelling. Grade A garbage! 0/5

    I was bored rigid for first 3 hrs, tedious. I thought the game picked up after that & it kept my interest, but in a bad, unenjoyable way. The stereotyped politics & wokeness the creators have tried to shoehorn down your throat is laughable. I was actually relieved to start playing abby just to get away from the wooden character of Dina. All characters have been stripped of any likeability. The whole thing is bleak & pointless. It makes me wonder if ND delayed this game because they realised they'd created a turd and sought desperately to polish it.I thought the game had ended after abbys first bossfight with ellie but no, they decided to drag it on for a second non sensical confrontation ( which felt like dlc). An utterly pointless sequel besmirching the memory of the first..which I replayed immediately after just to restore my faith.     Played it twice now and 100% the game so I didn’t miss anything. The last of us was one of my favourite games of all time. Now the sequel is too. It made me upset. Angry, relieved, scream, confused, uncomfortable. Amazing game

The writing, the pacing, and the excessive switching between characters, flashbacks, and timelines show how poorly this was executed. The characters, who we knew and loved in the first game, are butchered in their sequel. Worse, we're expected to care about these new, yet uninteresting ones, that are shoved upon our throats for the second half of the game. Apart from it's messy plot and disengaging characters, it was mostly the immersive combat, amazing graphics, and lengthy narrative that lifted this game for it's entire worth.

    Ellie is no longer the defiant, joke-loving girl we adored in the first. No, she's taken a darker and more brutal path towards the concept of vengeance. Evidently, this makes Ellie a dry and uninteresting person to play as. Contrary to the trailers, we only get to play Joel for less than 5 minutes throughout the whole game, and his death is already shown before we even get our bearings. As for Dina, her character is alright. However, her relationship with Ellie felt as if the LGBT+ agenda was more emphasized, instead of having actual chemistry and character development between the two. It's as if Naughty Dog wanted to push the boundaries of socio-political inclusiveness with this one. For the amount of time I got to spend with Abby, I found myself engaging with her character a little but not enough to actually care. Abby and her crew had some interesting parts to them, yet their roles and characters soon degraded throughout the story’s progression. As for Owen, he was probably the worst of them all. Besides his creepy personality and confusing relationship with Abby, it felt like Owen served no real purpose in the game. None of them did. It’s as if the crew was mainly used for Abby’s character development, so the player would hopefully “like” her and see things from her perspective. I get the whole moral, but it just didn’t work for this one.

    Storywise, the entire thing is a jumbled mess. The timelines, the transitions, and the flashbacks are excessive and suspense killing. As you play, you will find yourself jumping timelines and characters, switching between Abby and Ellie for the initial part of the game, and then finding yourself in a random flashback minutes later. Jumpscares are common but they lack suspense to build upon. As a result, everything becomes so cliche and predictable that you’ll eventually get bored. Gameplay-wise, it’s really good. The combat is well designed and the crafting system is like it used to be. However, there were some limitations I encountered when using the skill/pill system. Although it offers multiple branches for a different set of skills, It seems that each skill branch has to unlock it’s first skill before the second one could be. Therefore, you can’t spend pills on one skill before unlocking the one previous to it. As for combat, human NPC’s are really smart. Even at moderate difficulty, I constantly found myself being flanked, cornered, or flushed by enemies. Hounds will sniff you out if you don’t keep moving. There isn’t enough time to hide in bushes or covers because enemies will always keep you on your toes. Evidently, this renders stealth approaches difficult to execute.

    In addition to your common runners, clickers, and bloaters from the previous game, Part 2 introduces a new collection to their zombie arsenal. For starters, Stalkers are too quiet to be seen in listen mode, and they’ll pounce from the shadows if you get too close. Shamblers are similar to bloaters. However, they excrete gas explosions at close range instead of throwing them like a bloater does. There are also zombies that hide in fungal growths in the walls, waiting for the chance to attack. During the later part of Abby’s gameplay, you’ll encounter something entirely different and much deadlier.

    I respect Neil Druckmann for approaching Part 2 differently. Unfortunately, that approach never really delivered. Abandoning where the game left off, Naughty Dog forgets what made The Last of Us memorable. Instead, the characters we knew and loved were unfairly butchered and destroyed in the sequel, and in return, we’re forced to familiarize ourselves with new and loathsome ones. Although the combat and gameplay was a treat to experience, and the crafting system encouraged resourcefulness and practicality, the game’s messy writing, story progression, and lack of believability for it’s characters drags players along it’s lengthy narrative. Not only did the Last of Us Part 2 discredit its predecessor, it failed to carry whatever point it had in the beginning. Consequently, I don’t believe this game deserves the exaggerated threes and zeroes it earned. believed it deserves a 10 for compelling gameplay, graphics, length, and combat. However, minus 4 for choice of story, bringing it down to a strong 6.    … Expand

They destroyed the characters we loved from the first game and the new characters they introduced were not interesting at all. The story didn't make sense and the worst part is that they force you to play as Abby which is like torture after seeing what she did to Joel. The game tries so desperately to make you like Abby that it's hilarious, meanwhile Ellie is treated like a villain. The pacing of the story isn't good at all either. The gameplay is okay but I was expecting more improvements from the first game, it gets repetitive especially because the game is needlessly long. Super disappointed… Expand

I even went back to playing the first game again to make my feelings more genuine for the TLOU2 and I ended up being more upset towards this new game. People loved LTOU because of the father/daughter bond that Joel and Ellie had. There were better character development and story that was seamless while in TLOU2 it relies on shock and "surprise". The overall message of the story was entirely predictable and by the end of it, I just felt upset that all of this pain and suffering was because the writer's message was something so obvious. Revenge is bad and it can consume you if you do not do something about it. They killed Joel in such a terrible way just as a catalyst to get this predictable revenge story going. What a complete and utter waste.

    This game also does a lot of manipulation to make you feel for Abby and make Ellie look bad but it doesn't work. There is a scene where you kill Abby's dog as Ellie as if you are supposed to care when just before you were killing DOZENS of dogs prior. You are supposed to feel bad for killing someone when you just brutally slaughtered tons of other people right before. The game contradicts its self constantly and it ruins the immersion. You can see the puppeteer instead of the puppet constantly. I really disliked a lot of the side characters as well like Mel for example. Why is a pregnant woman going to the front? How irresponsible do you have to be? Also, they even changed a lot of the story like how Joel killed the Doctor. They not only changed his skin color but made the operating room look clean. In TLOU1 the doctor has dark skin and the operating room is moldy and gross. Made me realize how shoehorned this story was. Joel and Tommy are also a lot less smart for the sake of moving the plot for Abby by being way too trusting and telling everything about themselves. These guys didn't get this far from being this stupid.

    Let's talk about the good. The game has without a doubt amazing graphics and animations. The music and sound design are tremendous and it does a great job of creating a terrifying atmosphere when going up against the clickers. I loved exploring the map and having conversations about what happened to the unfortunate. Combat was nice as well and I got a kick out of smashing people's head in with Abby. Probably the only thing I enjoyed while playing as her.

    Overall it was a decent game but I can play other games if I want better Graphics or gameplay. I wanted to play TLOU2 for the story and NaughtyDog did not deliver. IMO it was a wasted opportunity to do something better and it could have been handled so much better.    … Expand

    I've been avoiding all news and reviews ever since its release. Haven't finished the game until July 2nd. Not sure these bombed reviews are real or fake, but I personally love it so much and I would not be hesitated to give it a 10.
    Currently on my New Game+ and half way of platinum it.

    I have never been so disappointed in a sequel.... 7 years of waiting... and everything that was so amazing about the first game has been completely destroyed by this one. The first game was successful because of the story! This franchise is story-based! Which is why a lot of fans are disappointed. It was then you lost me...Ellies revenge plot was genuine and I was with her throughout the game! I wanted that b**ch dead but then!!!!! you made me play the person responsible! Not just for 15 minutes but for the majority of the second portion of the game!!!!! and had the audacity to try to get us to SYMPATHISE! With her! No! Just no!.
    But what made me more angry was that Ellie’s revenge plot goes nowhere! The person got to live! Which makes me believe! That the killing at the beginning was just a plot device! Which basically proves that the director Neil didn’t give too s**ts about our love for the characters who we grew to care about in the first game. It’s like we have completely forgotten about the zombies and what made them interesting and again moved to the humans. Much like Walking Dead. Which in my eyes is boring. Don’t get me wrong there are some positives, the gameplay is excellent, improving your weapons has this cool animations and most of all the graphics is just stunning!! but the story had to be right and it wasn’t. *sigh*    … Expand

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
