I’m 37 years old and have been gaming for nearly 30 years, I’ve never been more disappointed in a game. Yes the game is beautiful and gameplay is good, but where this falls flat is the story. From forgettable characters to just down right disrespect to others, it’s just a mess.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As time goes on we can start to see the reviews from the people who ACTUALLY played the game and didn't jump to the fanboy/hate bandwagon.

I would rate it a solid 9.5 but since it is not possible i'll settle for a 9.

The gameplay is improved in every way imaginable from the first game, it feels heavy and meaningful, you actually feel bad killing most of the time.

The graphics are (in my opinion) the best we have seen from the ps4.

Here comes the "controversial" part, the story. It is a sotry about revenge, about a cycle of seemingly never ending violence.
Joel's death lights the fuze for this story of revenge, making you HATE Abby and wanting to kill her at all costs. But as time goes on and you get to play as Abby (i'd say probably 1/3rd of the game?) you get to see that like Ellie and Joel, she too has a family and some friends to protect, an active comunity.

At the end of the first game i kept trying to excuse Joel from the countless murders and the dooming of hope for finding a cure. "He killed a lot of people... but he did it for Ellie" i thought.
This time is the other way around, i was starting to undertand Abby and why she did what she did while at the same time trying to hate her. "She saved some kids from certain death BUT she killed Joel".

No other game has ever given me an experience sush as this one.

Despite all of this i too would have liked to see Abby die (which is why i rated it 9.5 and not 10), but i understand why Ellie ended up not doing it. She finally breaks the circle or death, hate and revenge and becomes "the better woman", in a sense, better than Joel was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent. The story makes you feel a range of emotions. It’s not a happy story But that’s the point. It won’t be for everyone. I was so disgusted by Joel’s death and I intensely wanted Abby dead. As soon as you play as her I knew they would try and make me have empathy for her. I didn’t think it was possible but I eventually grew to like her to the point I no longer wanted her dead. Think about it, if there was no TLOUS 1 or backstory to Joel or Ellie then people would hate them for they did to Abby. I’m glad Ellie let go before the acts she committed destroyed her completely. I do wish that Ellie found some kind of happiness and meaning in the end though and I hope that’s the focus if there’s a DLC or continuation of the story Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game uses cheap, artificial, manipulative story mechanics, instead of intelligent or thoughtful characterisation, to garner sympathy for Abby. For example when playing as Ellie, you are FORCED to: (1) kill dogs (2) murder screaming wailing people, whose loved ones mourn and cry in terror (making you feel bad about killing them) (3) murder a pregnant woman Whereas when you are playing as Abby, you are FORCED to (1) play and have fun with dogs (2) defend yourself against evil scary transphobic jungle people (3) save kids People who enjoy the story are confusing SKILFUL DIRECTION with CHEAP MANIPULATION. People seem to be forgetting the Abby is a fundamentally EVIL, IMMORAL character that doesn't deserve sympathy In Ellie's darkest moments, she: (1) attacks a woman who, aside from being involved in her fathers death, also further titillates and aggravates Ellie by saying Joel died like a little **** Reacting with rage and impetus, she beats the woman up with a metal pipe. However, Ellie is visibly traumatised and shaken by the event, she comes back and is clearly distressed and troubled (2) kills a woman who she later finds out is pregnant. When finding out, Ellie's hearing fades, she collapses and starts hyperventilating; clearly disturbed, remorseful and regretful In Abby's darkest moments, she: (1) shoots an old man in the knee, who just previously saved her life and was completely friendly and warm to her. She proceeds to take VISCERAL PLEASURE in beating him with a golf club, torturing him for so long that she eventually she grows exhausted and needs to remove her jumper. She delivers the killing blow right in front of a screaming girl who begs for his life (2) smashes a girls face, and upon finding out that the girl is pregnant, Abby takes immense PLEASURE AND SATISFACTION at the prospect of slitting her throat. Both girls enact their darkest moments under the impetus of revenge, but it is clear which character takes pleasure in the idea of inflicting pain. Once you understand this, any meaning the story holds completely withers away. TLOU2 is not a satisfying or entertaining story experience, nor is it a story that even needed to be told, given how many other movies, games, books, TV shows have conveyed the consequences of revenge theme better. Revenge is an emotion that lacks maturity and thoughtfulness; something the first game had in spades. The key plot device was ultimately a bad choice and proves there never really was a “Part 2” story to begin with; just as the creators said at the end of the first game.

Somebody grabs you, infected grabs you, etc, blah blah blah, boring. Cheesy crafting. It's like they wanted to make the game a little beefier so they add a throwaway crafting system. Can't wait to get 25% faster reload speed. Worthless considering I don't know how fast it is to begin with.

The encounters are scripted. The levels are designed so that things happen when you drop over a wall or go through a door instead of the enemies being there already going about their business. So there is no replay incentive. Once you do it why replay? Assassin's Creed, far cry, the division, ive played many of their missions and games over and over because it's different each time even if it's the same mission because the enemies react differently each time. The stealth sucks. Several of the hard areas I just sat still and waited for many of the enemies to come to me. Many of the people are upset over the story. I don't care. But it's not art. It's a cheesy comic book level story. People argue over the ability to control the narrative and put down anyone who doesn't like it. Saying you must not be intelligent enough to understand the story or message. For the most part that has nothing to do with liking a game. I play games to have fun and control what's going on. I read books to enjoy a story that has no flexibility, and is trying to relay something to me. This game is like punching a time card when playing it. Nothing is fun, nothing is cool, nothing is interesting, nothing happens that is neat. There is nothing you can do to change anything. Like you can't go and grind some materials and upgrade your base or camp or anything unless they want you to within the cheesy craft system, 25% more stability, can't wait. Every single thing is walking, going through a building, a few skirmishes then a big fight. Half of the time you forgot why your going where your going or what your supposed to be doing, because the game forcing you into it's path so why care? It's room to room. The outside is just rooms with no roof. I've had more fun playing Watch Dogs 2 for a couple hours after I finished, than the 30 hours I played this game.

I traded the game in today and gamestop gave me $32 for it.

The fact that they got rid of the competent female writer to have some egocentric lunatic write this ham-fisted, heavy-handed tripe shows that this so called woke take is cynical and was handled by a true toxic male. This is the toxic masculinity that they often trot out we should avoid. If you want to have fun when you play a game, avoid this. Outlast handled torture and strife better. Dying light has better monsters. They ignored the story of trying to actually deal with the plague for this claptrap. I give it a 2 because it looks impressive enough. The mechanics are bland and you have absolutely zero agency with the two players. Think about it, this male 'feminist' takes away the agency of the wronged woman protagonist. What was this game made for, other than some grotesque circle jerk with the writer and a mirror?
Avoid the game and play something better.

I will begin with these words: this game worths its money (I made a pre-order) and all of my expectations were met.
From the very beginning, you can see that developers loved what they were doing. The proofs for this statement are all the tiny details which they made: starting from the backpacks which are slide on the characters' backs while they are moving and ending with the small pieces of glass which stay on the windowsill when you break the glass and then the character can swipe these tiny pieces from the windowsill while jumping over it. I can hardly remember any other game which has such a detailing.
The game itself is pretty long. It took me 30 hours to accomplish the game but I tried to explore every corner, every small location, also I was reading all the notes I found and tried to open all the vaults. These actions took some extra time but I really enjoyed it and it helped to improve the vibe of this post-apocalyptic world. I really enjoyed some of the new game mechanics such as in the moment when you are given a map and you should explore a pretty big location and mark the places which you visited and what you found. Talking about locations, the thing which I noticed pretty soon is that the game itself became bigger than the first part. I really liked this fact because I loved exploring locations in the first game and here I did it too. Especially because the graphics in the game is really amazing even on my PS 4 slim. Also, I really enjoyed the atmosphere which makes you scared pretty often and keeps you on your toes.
Talking about plot, it turned to be very touching for me and I got some ideas to think about. For me, it is not worse than in the first game, although, I think that not all people can enjoy it so much as I did. Many people scream out about that fact there are no such relationships like between Joel and Ellie in the first game which were the core of the atmosphere. Yes, there is almost no such relationships (except the flashback scenes) but I, actually, respect developer for that. They could do just a copy of the first game because they know that idea if the first game works and people love it but in this case, we would have a situation like with the new Star Wars movies. I mean the 7th episode is a plot copy of the 4th episode. The 7th episode was made just to attract new people. Developers of TLOU could do the same but they didn't. I respect them for their bravery.
However, the game has some drawbacks too. Firstly, I noticed that many people talk about stupid AI. Alas, it's often true. For example, I was sitting around the corner and when an enemy comes close to me I can silently kill him but then another one spots his body and comes close too me too and I kill him too in the same way. Once I killed 4 enemies in this way. It breaks the atmosphere a lttile bit. However, enemies often make you afraid of them and you try to go through them quietly, what is more, I've just talked about is not familiar with the infected.
The second disadvantage is that stealth mechanics haven't changed significantly since the first game. You still бщыедн just pick up bottles and bricks to attract enemies' attention. The differences are only the facts that now you can crawl and hide under cars and can craft silencer for the gun. When you making such a big game which is supposed to change the game industry you should add more new mechanics. However, the physics of the guns themselves became much better.
The third con is about LGBT. I'm not familiar with homophobia and stuff and I respect such people but I don't like when it's aggressively promoted and in this game, it's obvious that it was added, just because they were asked for that. Nowadays just if you don't include an LGBT topic you will be accused in "homophobia" and they decided to follow the "rules" and no to "oppress" anybody. They made some brave decisions but in this case, they failed, in my view
In conclusion, I love this game. It's a decent continuation of our beloved story and developers did such great work. However, I can's score 10 because of the cons I found but I still consider this game a masterpiece.
Dear Developers, I can't even imagine how difficult it was to create this game how nervous your were. I'm sure that you felt responsible for this game as almost everyone considered the first game a masterpiece and you had to do something better than it. It's difficult to imagine how many problems you've got during the development including problems with family and health. It's obvious that the game was developed under big pressure. Non or the less, you did it! I want to thank you for that and let you know that time goes and the attitude to the game will improve in the future. Thank you one more time from a gut from a small Russian province town!

I understand why controversy surrounds it, but I truly hope that folks realize the controversy was inevitable. This is game designed to put you through its paces, to force you to experience its narrative. It’s not a game about choices, which by itself makes it sort of a throwback in these days of almost infinite character design and open worlds. This is a game with a story to tell, and it requires you to travel with it.

And what a story it is, far more akin to a novel than a game. You won’t be able to empathize with one character throughout, because that character’s actions will force you to reevaluate your feelings. Likewise, your initial impressions of other characters will change because of their deeds and motivations. I’ve never seen anything like in a game before. It’s clear that enormous thought and planning and artistry went into this story before any programmer touched a keyboard.

Perhaps that is what impresses me most about the game, that Naughty Dog had a singular vision and, holy hell, did they follow through on it. I still find it hard to grasp the sheer scope of it all, the ridiculous beauty of the mountains surrounding Jackson, the heartbreaking devastation of Seattle, the set pieces that had me as tense as I’ve ever felt during a game. I can’t tell you how many times I asked, “How did they do that?” Even though it’s been seven years since the original, it’s hard to believe they pulled off this massive — there’s no other word for it — world in such detail.

I will play it again, but not anytime soon. I want to approach it after it’s not so fresh in my mind. If you are on the fence, or have been concerned by the mixed or negative reviews—please, give it a shot. This game was created by talented professionals working at the very peak of their powers. You may love it, you may hate it, but I promise you that it is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Not only were we deceived in the plot trailers. We were given the killer Joel, as one of the main characters of the game, this is disgusting. The game is good, but because of the dullness of the plot and the terrible ending, I put zero.

Well, first of all I don't even know what to say about the graphics and the gameplay, it is simply the perfect evolution of what the first game had created. The amount of animations made for the combat and all the little features that were added, like the silencer, are breathtaking and make the gameplay feel dynamic and as fluid as ever, and therefore making one of the best 3rd person games ever (gameplay wise). Naughty dog really nailed the techinical aspect, but now the story...

I don't think that this game has a bad story, not at all, it has the best premise that a TLOU sequel can get, taking one of the main characters and making him pay for all the stuff he made in the first game is simply the only plausible motivation that would make Ellie seek revenge at any cost. But I agree that the way in which they did it was pretty bad, I get that the TLOU world is cruel and that death is always around the corner, but it's f*cking Joel. I don't think that Joel deserved that miserable death, maybe he could've sacrificed himself for Tommy or something like that, because it really made him look weak.

As I said, I truly don't think that the story is bad, I just think that it is poorly told. I really appreciate the ambition of ND by making us see all the sides of the story, because after all, the last of us is a game about people, and not about Joel and Ellie. But they sure as hell shouldn't expect us to be happy by making us wait more than 10 hours to progress Ellie's story. I simply don't get why they needed to add 2 campaigns that are so long, maybe they could've made 1 day with Ellie and then 1 day with Abby so that we don't get so tired of expecting Ellie's story to come back. It would have the same effect that the devs intended, we kill everybody that day with Ellie and then see Abby's point of view of who they really are, instead of killing them and only seeing who they really are 15 hours later.

People aren't complaining about the game because of the LGBT characters or the strong women in this game, it's just that the structure and pacing are horrible, and even though Abby's story is very interesting there's always that background thought wondering about what is going to happen with Tommy and Ellie that never goes away and that doesn't let us us enjoy Abby's plot as much as we should've. This isn't the game that we wanted, but it is the game that made sense as a sequel, I would give it 7.5 but since there isn't an option, I'm giving it an 8.

Everything that makes this a good game is there. But the pacing and the story falls short if its potential and it treats the fans like they are idiots. There is a boring and stupid back and forth between characters and the 2 story lines that never reaches a solid conclusion in the end. The LGBT representation is really good specially Lev (I'm not sure about Ellie and Dina). But thisEverything that makes this a good game is there. The original game has been number one on my list since I first played it, and I have played the game all the way through at least 35 times or more. I was eager about The Last of Us Part 2 and waited forever for the game. I purchased a new PS4 in 2017 in hopes to get the game and I waited and waited until I had played so many games I decided to get another PS4 before playing this masterpiece. I bought a PS4 Pro as an upgrade and awaited the game. Suddenly all these leaks come out. Everyone is downing the game and I find out Joel dies. Well I had expected Joel to die oddly enough. Unlike some others it wasn't a surprise to me at all. However the way they took him out did surprise me, but honestly the leaks had me even more hyped than before. I couldn't wait to learn who these new characters were and what the new story was like. While some hated the story I found it fitting of the characters Ellie and Joel and also found it very realistic. When pulling back the layers of the game you get a glimpse of each persons role in the Murder of Joel, and even get to analyze them as a group. Each has their own part in the whole drama and I found it all to be very well done just like the original. The graphics are a 10, Sound is amazing and is a 10. Story? I loved it myself. So much care went into every aspect of this game and it really comes off as a film or show, and the acting is top notch. The game-play is brutal and the story veers into some horror levels equal with RE7 and the remakes. The Boss in the Hospital was amazing and much more well done than I had expected. Naughty Dog has really done well pushing the PS4 beyond it's limits. It is a very violent game and if that is what you are looking for look no further. The combat feels great and is addictive to play. I am already playing a second time through on new game plus. So much hate for such a great game. Don't let other deter you. If you are interested in this game just buy it, it is amazing to behold. I can say The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2 stand on the same line for me. They are both masterpieces and compliment each other instead of rehashing the same thing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first games story served its purpose but wasn't all that complex or intriguing. The gameplay was solid but not very innovative or all that exciting as a stealth action third person shooter. But what sold it and made it one of the greatest games of all time (besides the totally underrated multiplayer) was the characters they crafted. Even up until now, no game had created such fleshed out and believable characters with real motivations and interactions that actually made you care for them. Which is why it's such a disappointment in actually waiting seven years for this developer to bring us that same level of commitment to characters in the form of a sequel and utterly destroy every notion of character building that brought their first game such huge praise and success. And the "voices" of the industry want you to believe that if you don't like these characters, you're basically a hateful person and don't support inclusivity in the gaming medium. I have actually gotten arguments against me saying I'm not for representation in gaming because I don't like the game. This is an absurd conclusion to make because there are actually great games that have made many strides in representation in the gaming community that people praise, including myself. And one of them is the DLC for the previous game! The problem with the characters in The Last of Us Part 2 is not that they're too representative, it's that they're just not very well written. This is exactly what happened in Game of Thrones season 8. The need to subvert expectations overrode their ability to craft intricate characters and organic situations that would naturally bring them together. The first part of the game is just trying to find the fastest way to kill Joel so we can get to Ellie's revenge story. That's a problem because it leads to the contrived actions of characters they spent the entire last game showing you they wouldn't put themselves in. And when we get to the point of no return, the other group has to keep making dumb decisions just to keep the plot rolling. And no one points this out but just think how the first game took place over a year and how we grew to love and connect with those characters (and the ones they came in contact with) and you contrast it with this game that takes place over the course of ONLY three days then puts you back at the beginning of those three days just to do it over again. How can you expect the characters you create to form connections and bonds with someone after three days and then expect the audience to understand their motivations and reasoning? Then look back at how the originals pacing feels mostly right and hits its story beats while this sequel feels long and needlessly drawn out. Every time a "building in the distance" prompt came up it just keeps reminding you that you probably have hours more to go. What kind of storytelling is building up to a moment of conflict where the character you've been hunting for three days shows up at your doorstep only to have you immediately pulled out of the climax and into their shoes to show their side of things as a cheap emotional trick. And nothing Abby does pertains to Ellie and the overall story. She doesn't even know Ellie exists until the end of her third day. Her entire side story is largely inconsequential to the overall plot of the game. And you have all these story beats tied up in the most contrived situations imaginable. The person Abby has been searching for for four years is at the exact spot she is and saves her when she's about to be devoured by a horde. She kills him while Ellie watches and they don't think this group will come for them after they leave. Ellie and Tommy start hunting them down and it leads them to an aquarium where ELLIE LEAVES BEHIND A MAP SHOWING EXACTLY WHERE THEY ARE. They fight and Abby once again leaves them alive for no logical reason. A year later you have Tommy, someone who is supposed to care for Ellie, come and guilt her back to a revenge engrossed mindset. She tracks her down and has to rescue her so she can kill her, then let's her live because reasons. Ellie didn't learn anything. There was no resolution between the two. She had a flashback of Joel that prevented her from killing the person that brutally murdered him.... when she just spent the entire game shooting hundreds of people in the head who, according to the writing team, were just as good of people as they want u to believe Abby is and you never even gave a second thought about them. This game isn't bad, it's just a disappointment. It's a shame this is what the writers at naughty dog were making for seven years with the full intention of disappointing fans and they never took a step back to ask themselves if this story was necessary to tell for these characters and this world. I'd argue no and I wish I could somehow erase this game from my memory and let part one live on as a standalone experience that told the complete story of Joel and Ellie.

The graphics were beautifully done. The gameplay, while very similar to the first game, had some minor improvements but nothing ground breaking. My huge issue with this game is the story and the characters. This didn't feel like a sequel to The Last of Us at all. I really do believe this would have been better as a stand-alone/spin-off game, with different characters to the first, but even then it would be a boring game with huge pacing issues. The pacing of this game is terrible. The order of events is baffling. Some parts felt rushed, others felt so dragged out I found myself extremely bored. For a story driven game, I simply can't give this a score higher than 3 because the writing is lazy, sloppy and cringe-worthy. I'm a huge fan of the first game, so I really wanted to like this sequel, I even got the collectors edition expecting to love it as much as I did the first. It didn't even take me an hour of playing the game to realise it was mediocre compared to the first game (which in my opinion is a masterpiece). I hoped it would get better but it just got worse and worse. Finishing the game felt like a chore, it dragged on and on with no real goal in sight. The ending was awful, one of the worst endings I've ever seen in a game, movie or TV show. I feel like the writer had a mediocre story he wanted to tell, without any care or respect for the fans of the first game, fans that waited 7 long years for this sequel, hoping for something better. I do feel like I wasted my time and money on this game, and I honestly don't think I'll be purchasing another game from Naughty Dog. The Last of Us was Naughty Dog's one hit wonder, which is a shame because it had such high potential, but ultimately ended up being like a long drawn-out episode of The Walking Dead, which btw I'm pretty certain The Walking Dead (TV show) is where the writers of this game plucked some of their bad ideas from. This game is the biggest disappointment gaming has ever experienced. 3/10 Expand

The last of us part 2 however is not that game. The last of us part 2 is an absolute dumpster fire. I feel naughty dog did a disservice to its fans of the first game. The trailer was designed in a way to where you can tell the company knew the game wasn't going to be liked. This was a desperate attempt to get sales up and isn't even the worst part. The game in itself is absolutely terrible. The gameplay itself is pretty good but the writing is absolutely terrible. The pacing is off, the game's sequence of events would actually work better in a different order because it's terribly put together. It's fine to kill off a character but if that character is the face of the franchise then don't kill them off in the first 2 hours in the dumbest way you can think of. This game forces you to play as a new character with little to no development and makes the previous protagonists the monsters of the game. You liked the old characters? Hell no you're a terrible homophobic hater who only dislikes the game to get at Neil. The game couldn't have been executed more poorly. In my opinion this game is the biggest waste of 60 dollars but if you HAVE to get it buy a used copy. So many people have returned this piece of crap that the used copies actually rival the new ones.

My opinion in Spanish, the game is very good, I really loved it. But it has a couple of things ...

Aspects to take into account about what is being talked about:

    Joel's death
Joel was with some anxiety for having lied to Ellie and worse even when she discovered it, it is a point where people do not say it, that changes people.

When Sara died, Joel changed his way of seeing life, he changed completely, he stopped being what he was before, if you remember correctly, the change to be very cold and he was an arms dealer who only cared about ending what he owed, at all costs. Then he met Ellie and the change completely, everything that happened with them in the first part happens and now that we see him at the end of the game cry for Ellie, we can realize that being an older person and much calmer, he returned To be as it really is, we cannot say "Joel would have suspected Abby and his friends" when he has trusted the black brothers in the first installment.
And his death was like real life is, from one moment to another. He became a noble man, bent, he is the same person who was with the last of us 1 with Sara.

It was a time bomb for the few fireflies to want to kill Joel, he was a bad person at the time. And it was when I least expected it.

    THE END

I thought it was very good. Ellie has a psychological problem in which she was not left alone because of Joel's death, people think that she should not have gone after Abby if he was not going to kill her, she did not kill her because she felt that she was going to be the same, that's why she had that flashback of dead Joel. So he decided to accept it.

It was a bittersweet ending when I saw Ellie lose what she loved most ...

    Extra

Ellie identifies with a moth, because they look for the light, the fireflies ...

What an incredible game! Start to finish it truly takes you on an emotional journey. Dont listen to those with negative things to say regarding the game. It's obvious what there intent is behind the hate. Must play, must be open minded, must finish! So excited to see how this story moves into potentially part 3...

I keep seeing people say Abby got a good ending she didn’t she lost everything and only has Lev left which is exactly what Joel had. Joel was miserable then he found Ellie and now it’s happening with Abby and Lev. The graphics are wonderful and the story is good but has some downs. Honestly I felt bad for Abby and I never thought I would have empathy for her. I cared for Ellie tooo overall the game made me question everything I was trying to figure out if I wanted Abby dead or Alive I liked her but I loved Joel but deep down I knew Joel wasn’t a good person. People keep saying Abby is evil but it’s not true she doesn’t kill innocent people and at the beginning of the game she tells her group not to kill Ellie because she’s innocent and didn’t kill her dad. Abby is a good person because she saves Lev and his sister. Ellie and Abby our the same both lose their father and got lost in revenge. Honestly I think Ellie doesn’t know who she really is- I feel like she wants to forgive Joel and she does when she doesn’t kill Abby. But through out the game Ellie is ruthless and angry which she should her dad died but at the same time she’s lost she’s not the Ellie from the first game she’s older and darker. This game gives me mixed feelings it’s morally grey which is realistic no one is perfect. But I liked the story because it was realistic every action has a consequence. Abby killing Joel made Ellie kill all her friends. And Joel killing Abbys dad made her come for him. This game shouldn’t be a 0/10 the gameplay is fun and the graphics are amazing. Another thing is the game wasn’t ruined by sjw you were just mad Joel died. Yes there is a gay character and guess what there was a gay character in the first game. Lev being trans is an interesting plot and helps you build a bond with him honestly Lev is one of the most bad ass characters. Ok I’m done I respect your opinion if you dislike the game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game is generally good but the story ruins it. I gave it an honest play through (5 times to be exact) to see if my opinion changed but still i don't care about Abby at all. It has nothing to do with anyone's sexual orientation/preference either, i could care less. Graphics and music are both great, the game play is much like the first with a few things added on but nothing that really stands out to me. What really grinds my gears (and probably most fans of the first game) is the lack of Joel and Ellie time. I thought the beginning was cool with Joel and Tommy but why not let us play as Joel with Tommy clearing out that area and then having "the talk"? Some bad ass brother tag team action would have been a great way to start off the game. We hear about how awesome they were from other people but never see/experience it ourselves. There are so many things they reference in the game that would have been cool to actually do. For example, if the game progressed with Joel and Ellie in Jackson first and showing their relationship growth would have been smarter. Them going on patrols together and showing how Ellie has grown in both combat and wisdom would have been a great platform for her character and fans to experience the changes and the Jackson community more. During this time, the truth about Ellie and the Fire Flies could have been executed. Learning how to swim, playing guitar, etc would have been great to see and would have given players the opportunity to play as Joel if not for just a little bit. I am not saying that Joel had to live in the sequel but at least give him a proper ending. If they really needed to push Abby's character, then have Joel and Ellie on a paired patrol finding them and having one last battle together where Joel dies protecting Ellie from Abby. This may not be the best alternative but damn it would have made me feel better at least and we see this over and over again in the first game where Joel consistently puts Ellie's life before his when there's danger. Getting beat to death from a golf club is great writing?! Also Joel, Tommy, and Ellie's characters are really different from the first and to be honest i don't think Joel or Tommy would ever put themselves in a situation where they are outnumbered with strangers and giving out personal information about themselves...where was this in the first game? I've heard some say that they got softer in Jackson but then freaking show me that! There are too many "implied" things they are counting on you to just get but the story is so forced. Joel's death was purely for shock value, if they needed a reason for Ellie to go on a rampage then the relationship with Dina could have been better developed and she could be the one that died since it was Ellie's love interest. She was pregnant and they wanted to start a life together so that in itself could have been enough fuel to make Ellie go nuts and then the scene with Joel and Ellie "you think i'd let you do this on your own?" would have been possible. Joel goes on the quest for revenge with Ellie (Ellie as the main) and then his death could have happened (still at the hands of Abby where the truth is revealed). If Joel had to be the one dying in the beginning then have an Ellie and Tommy combo going. That would have made so much more sense since they are two closest people to Joel. Tommy knows he cannot stop Ellie, why not go together so at least Tommy can watch over Ellie like Joel did. This would also be something Joel would have wanted and to be sure Ellie would be safe when he's gone and his brother is probably the only person he trusts besides Ellie. Yes Tommy went first in hopes of ending it before Ellie could get involved but again he knows Ellie will follow. Seems like everyone in Jackson is aware of Ellie's habits (even the mayor who lets her go anyways). This would have been sweeter with a chance to play as both Tommy and Ellie while developing their characters for the audience. Flash backs of both their memories of Joel would have been way more meaningful as well. Now onto the issue with Abby, "who the f*Ck is that guy?" - Conor McGregor. Okay i get her story and her thirst for blood and how she mirrors Joel but in all honestly i don't care and being forced to play as her so the audience sympathizes for her is a really risky thing to do. Playing as the killer of our favorite character just doesn't sit well through the entirety of the game and honestly i wanted Abby to die somehow. Why am i playing more than half the game as her?! A quick 'this is where Abby is coming from' would have been enough but her whole story and side characters that we cannot attach to is just too much and forced. Now it feels like they need to do this with any sequel (hopefully not) since we need to see everybody's perspective now. I heard ND say "why do we care so much about fictional characters" but isn't that how you make money? Expand

It broke me in ways I can’t even begin to explain, it made me feel everything with such intensity that no other piece of fiction or media has been able to accomplish. You can have your opinion and disagree with some narrative choices, but Naughty Dog gave us a real story in a world where bad and horrible things happen. It was a story that needed to be told. And is brutally uncomfortable but equally astonishing. And you can’t deny either how well-crafted it is as well as the heart and soul poured into bringing this game to life. The gameplay, the visuals, animations and graphics are unparalleled and situates this game in a whole other level. So thank you Naughty Dog for delivering such a complex and beautifully crafted story and video game.

Even if leaks and spoilers “ruined it” for you, give this game a chance. It is so much more than what you think it is or think you know. Play it, live through it and let it take you to one of the most gripping experiences a video game has ever delivered.

Gameplay was fun as the original one but the improvements was better, but just like the other true fans, I was disappointed with the story, paced, and characters. I wouldn’t mind if the main character dies but make it iconic and poetry. Also, the pacing on playing two characters wasn’t great. Playing as Abby was a dragged and I was just speed running the levels with her cause I wanted to go back to Ellie and finish the game. They should had use Abby gameplay as a DLC and have Joel and Ellie in one epic adventure together. Expand

If it is compared to the rest of the AAA games that are out there it is a definitive 10, there is no other game that can be compared in gameplay except MGS V, and if we talk about graphics it is the best that exists today it is almost not to believe that it is running on a PS4 and not on an RTX, the audio quality is just as sublime the audio is so good that it becomes something that is part of the same gameplay and gives total immersion, listening to the Seattle rain is more impressive to be a PS4 which the audio is not as good as it was on ps3 and the music of Gustavo Santaolalla because we all know how good it is, the art design, needless to say, it is the best of the game just like it was in the first, artificial intelligence is one of the best there is, enemies are always alert, they communicate with each other, they flank you, they track you down and they notice if something is wrong or if a partner is missing, in addition to going in front of an enemy or being exposed for a long time is very complicated, one thing for sure is that it is the game with the best lighting system (not RT) of all, and the characters (except for the unmentionable) are very good, Dina, Jessie, Owen or Lev have very defined personalities and can be empathized and feel interest very easily, and if we talk about the voice acting work this is something that was already a guarantee of excellence with the actors that we know lend the voice, and if we play on the subject of animations it is definitely the most natural and refined that It exists so much so that people came to think that the gameplay trailer was cinematic because it was not to be believed, the studio animations are to date the best in the industry. The game when compared to everything that exists out there is a 10 without problems, there are not many games with this level of quality. Expand

It's great - graphics, sound, character models, acting, gameplay. All great. And despite many suggesting otherwise, it's story, tone and characterisation are also great. A different but very "Last of Us" tale, with a similarly, multifaceted message at the end. If this was 'just a revenge story' then The Last of Us was just about helping your friend (clue - it wasn't).

    My main criticism

If this was 'just a revenge story' then The Last of Us was just about helping your friend (clue - it wasn't).

My main criticism of the game is that it is a tad too long and could do with a couple of lighter moments to break the bleakness. Not sure if the significant graphical improvements and subtle but welcome gameplay tweaks quite make up that shortfall when comparing it to the first game, but otherwise this is a great sequel that only loses out to its predecessor slightly and only because it hasn't got that novelty value. I mean we were expecting something mind blowing and lightning in a bottle is very difficult to capture twice. They came close though.

It is very similar to Part one - bigger sure, better? maybe, maybe not.

For those that enjoyed the first one, if you understood why it ended in the way it is did - not just the "saved Ellie cuz I like Ellie" bit, you are highly likely to love this game. If you are the sort of person that freaks out when you realise sometimes things happen that are bad and there is nothing you can do about that, then consider staying away and just continue to enjoy the first one.

What is funny is that the story (which is essentially about bad things happening and learning to put things behind you so you can move on) has flown over the heads of a lot of the previous game’s fans in the most spectacular fashion.

I know, right? a game about growing up, being review bombed by people that mostly haven't grown up!?

    Who'd have thought...

P.S. Partly came here to check the rumours about MC blocking negative reviews (lol). This is my third attempt posting a positive review, so it’s likely just the massive volume of activity on this page (compare it to any other big game, its crazy!). Still at least it gives the nutters something else to get upset about!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay and visuals are incredible (can't wait to see it on next gen consoles). Sometimes I paused and used the photo-mode to capture some of the jaw-dropping set pieces (classic Naughty Dog).

The stealth mechanics were some of the best in any game I've played, mainly because they were more realistic than other games that use similar mechanics (but still offers a significant advantage to the player). For example, you'll have dogs sniff you out if you get within a certain detection distance and enemies can spot you from pretty far away. If you're in the grass, it doesn't completely shroud you from detection if they get close enough and you're in their line of sight. The AI is also pretty clever in this game, making for some tense situations. If you're quick enough and have good aim, you can silently take out enemies and avoid combat at higher difficulties. The thrill of sneaking past some of the absolutely horrifying monsters in this game combined with the factions hunting you down really gets the blood pumping.

I didn't have much of a challenge playing through the game. I played on hard mode my first play-through and had numerous occasions where I was fully stocked. There are some tough boss fights, but there are numerous autosave points to make fights easier. So if you like a challenge, you'd probably be fine starting out on survival difficulty honestly. Just make sure to explore and to move/kill from the shadows as best you can.

As for the more controversial topics, I liked the characters. They're animations and conversations seemed realistic, the facial animations were stellar, and the developers fleshed out most of the characters just enough to understand their personas and motivations. Obviously, the structure they chose just made gamers rage against the machine, hence the mixed reviews. Out of all the things that make this a 10/10 game, such as the gameplay, the visuals, character development, first openly lesbian couple in a game, references to the complexity of gender identity ( all of which wasn't in your face about it), the little details in the combat/easter eggs/environment , hilarity in the light hearted moments, the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie, the clever level design and AI, sound design and ambience.... ALLLLL that, and you **** up the structure of the game? ND could have kept everything they had here, restructure the game, and you'd have a definite 10/10, GOTY on your hands. Sadly, I have to painfully give this incredible game an 8/10 for this one criterion.

When I sat down to play the game I was instantly hooked. It's a thrilling, emotional and devastating revenge story that barely let's you catch your breath. The writers do an incredible job at showing the futility and destructiveness of revenge as well as the grey morality of the characters. The switching perspectives between protagonists will make you realize no character is completely good or evil, they all have their own motivations and their own stories. You'll begin to feel like every NPC you kill has lived a life just as rich and full as Ellie and Joel have. Which adds significant weight to every encounter. It's a difficult thing to come to terms with as a gamer, as you are so used to feeling certain throughout the game that what you are doing is right. You will not feel like that playing this game.

Yes this game is heartbreaking. Yes it's not what many players wanted to become of these beloved characters. But it's an example of some of the most gripping storytelling in gaming I've experienced (I haven't been as hooked to a story since Red Dead Redemption 2) and it left me staring blankly at my TV for the entire duration of the end credits. Feeling a thousand emotions at once. Gamers are emotional. So I completely understand some people's anger at the story. But the story is fantastic nevertheless. Please ignore the controversy and negativity surrounding it and play this game. It's incredible.
