    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. extremely heartbreaking, i avoided the spoilers/leaks i was about to go out and get a physical copy then i accidentally saw a tweet saying Joel died in the first 2 hours of the game and at that point i don't care anymore i started watching gameplays, read user reviews and it's all true, a complete garbage ruined by some people who think they made creative choices and bold moves but in reality they delivered garbage with a cheap shock value plot twist that nobody asked for. Joel, Ellie, the programmers/graphics team deserve so much better than this awful game.… Expand

Joel and Ellie were the reason people love the first game. Their characters and their story was handled with love and care in the first game. This game not only butchers their relationship it completey throws it out the window in favor of this new Abby character. The marketing was deceptive and everything was in service of Abby. They might as well have killed Ellie when they killed Joel because this franchise is effectively dead now!… Expand

    Positives-

    The graphics are excellent. I would slow down my gameplay just to take in the scenery.

    Negatives-

    The game play is repetitive with very few new enemy challenges.

    This game was delayed and still had bugs where people would spawn often right beside me.

    The characters you play don’t develop. They are mostly angry, bitter, and thoughtless, but for a few moments of humanity.

    You have no options to make decisions which makes it feel like your forced do things not in Ellie’s character. I would sit there and not press the button the game was indicating I press. Its the first time playing a game I thought, this is miserable. Unfortunately, it’s just a downward spiral for her character.

    Abby is an unlikeable angry person who cheats with a guy who’s girlfriend is pregnant. He’s an unlikeable POS too. Their whole group is unlikeable. Being forced to play her character was not fun. I rushed through her sections of the game which unfortunately is a huge part of the game. She does one good thing and I guess we are supposed to feel like she has been redeemed. Nope. Also her father is a unethical doctor who didn’t inform his patient he was going to kill her before being he put under anesthesia. Abby is an angry sociopath and her deceitful father got killed because of his own horrible decisions. Joel prevented Ellie’s murder.

    It was apparent early on revenge will take more than it gives. But that is the core of the story and repeatedly reinforced ad nauseam. This drives the plot to nowhere. Nothing was gained by the experience. We literally end with less family, less digits, less purpose than when we began which I understand is the point but what a disappointing experience. Its like GOT or the SW trilogy. When your ending is bad it ruins everything that comes before. I replayed the first game twice. This game has no replay value.

    We get the point. Revenge is bad.

    Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent game because the characters have story arcs. They change and develop and realize life doesn’t have to be misery. This game begins with misery, with some misery in the middle, a blip of hope, then a strong miserable ending.

    In summation. Excellent job and creating a graphically beautiful game. Boo for releasing a game with bugs still in it even after a delay. It’s misery and depression with amazing graphics.    … Expand

    You will hate the story due to some poor plot twits in the game that come more has a cheap shoot then an actual plot twist. The game play is basically the same but you can jump now hooray for innovation!
    Graphics look amazing jaw drooping but it all goes to waste since you the story is probably one of the worst ever in gaming, you though the mass effect 3 ending was bad? Oh boy you haven't seen nothing.    … Expand

    Story - 7/10
    The story is OK. Definitely not as good as the first game. The story was actually going pretty good up until the Abby portion. I know what the writers were trying to convey, but by us playing as Abby for what seemed like forever, it seemed to diminish the anger we had from Joel's death. And it wasn't because I started to see things from Abby's side. It was because we were focusing so much on her that I started to forget about Joel. Abby's story was kind of boring.

    I was hoping for a happy ending, but I understand why they didn't go that route and it doesn't affect my score. My score was affected by 2 things. The OK-ish story and the fact that they pulled an MGS2 on us.

    Now comes the easy part.
    Graphics - 10/10
    Not alot needs to be said here. This is top tier stuff. How did they get the lips to move so well?

    Sound - 10/10
    Again. Not alot to be said. The score was fantastic. Sound effects were great and made me flinch many times.

    Gameplay - ??
    I'm bad at reviewing this stuff. I played good. *shrug*

    Just two hours ago, I already finished. I understood why the fans fell in love with the standard part)

    I will be brief. During the passage of the sequel, I have a difficult feeling, and I will play the Game Tycoon product, when the developer will have many game points, and the rest of the game for the gameplay and quests would not have enough points.

Their were parts I enjoyed, which was the parts of playing Ellie and the flashbacks of course. The gameplay was good I liked it, Visually great, and music is good but without a story this game has no legs to stand on.

    I've waiting over 6 years for a sequel, 3 years for it to come out, I was over the moon when I found out it was happening. Then this, why? I get what they were going for and I think if they which the two playthroughs around it would been better, Showed no promotional stuff on Ellie and joel. I think making you play as Abby was a bad decision especially after you was just getting started with Ellie and starting to get to know the other characters. I didn't like what they were going with Abby and lav aswell trying to push them like the new Ellie and joel that was silly.

    All in all I think this story would have been a good 3 game not the second and destroy all that character building from the first. Can't be for nothing! Felt like it in the end.    … Expand

The characters don't grow, they act illogically, generally come out as unlikable and seem to be wrapped in a plot armor 10 inch thick. The comparisons with fan-fiction levels of writing are actually one hundred percent spot-on. I'm not even going to talk about the controversial agenda pushing that's going on, I'm sure everyone has already made their picture about that.
    The other bad part is the combat. Naughty Dog has never been famous for their combat systems. However, as combat is a VERY integral part of this game (more so than in the first one, dare i say), the issues only rise in prominence and often you'll question yourself "what the **** just happened?" or "did the camera/auto-targetting/glitches (yes, the game has some minor glitches in the enemy AI) just decide to **** me over?". The combat and crawling through maps looking for hidden resources is fun a while, but gets repetitive and annoying very quickly and it only gets worse as the game goes on.

    If you've loved the original The Last of Us because of its combat, you're going to be happy with this game. If you¨ve enjoyed it for its story or characters, you're in for a very unpleasant surprise. Save your 60$, buy on sale if you want to try.    … Expand

Don’t even get me started with that poor excuse of an ending. Neil took a fat **** on this franchise, and I will pretend this game never even existed.

This game was disappointing at best, the gameplay, and the looks were stunning but the story didnt make up for it, as it dumbed down from the first making it all feel pointless. The start was strong but the last nearly 75% dropped down in quality as it goes on. Trying to make you sympathize an antagonist can be great, but naughty dog has done it in a terrible way where it just makes you despise the antagonist more and feel more sympathetic to Marlene. The story is just disappointing and a massive step down from the nearly perfect narrative of the original. This might be the biggest disappointment to me and maybe of this entire year so far, its a shame to see naughty dog go from the great things of uncharted 2, the perfect conclusion with uncharted 4, and one of the greatest narratives of all time with last of us, dumbed down to this big mess. Get the game on sale is my verdict, but even then, be prepared for disappointment in narrative.… Expand

    The game wants us to build empthy over a new character who brutally murdered people and brutally beat pregnant woman. This is just the worst story I have ever seen.

    I can’t believe I waited all these years for this, what a disappointment. If thought I was buying a zombie horror game, not a cheesy soap opera. If you have to play this I would at least get it cheap second hand, but even better just play last of us remastered and ignore the rubbish soap opera DLC mission “left behind”

However the core storyline is quite insulting to fans. The fact they tried to hide Abby in the trailers is misleading. Even more misleading is making Joel seem like a major character in trailers only to have him be killed off two hours in a 20+ hour game in a needlessly brutal and distasteful way. ND tried to subvert expectations and be edgy but instead alienated fans of the game by destroying two beloved and well developed characters. The story and it’s characters failed to grow and develop. I intentionally ignored all the drama prior to release because I wanted to give this game a fair shake. I wanted to Love This Game, I really did. However, in its current form, this game however, is HOT GARBAGE. Joel deserved better and it was kind of pathetic watching a Neil Druckmann "lookalike?" inserted into the game. The game does in fact LOOK gorgeous and runs very well, make no mistake, but those are the only good things I have to say about it. You can tell where Anita Sarkeesian's political drivebys were infused into the narrative, The PC / SJW ridden story is horrible, the characters are mostly wooden or stereotypes of "Super Wahmen" or fall victim to the latest "White male leads or major characters are so 1990s, let kill them off" mantra and the dialogue in general, is just atrocious. This game is literally an enduring self-licking ice-cream cone that shoves identity politics down the players throat without a break. There was a 10 or so hour stretch that felt like the worlds biggest side / fetch quest. I had to force myself to finish it simply because I wanted it of the hard drive. This game nether respects the original characters nor does it pay any homage to any of them. Save your money, save your time, and play the first one over again and pretend that that ending is the canonical one.… Expand

    I finally finished the game and I just want to make it clear how disappointed I am. This game has so much potential but falls on its face more than anything I have ever seen. However, in a story-based game, all of those things don't matter if your story is a complete dumpster fire which this story is. Characters lack any sort of development. I literally don't care when anything happens to anyone, but Ellie. Every single one of them could die and it would not change how I felt about the game or them at all. The only time I feel any sort of emotion is in flashbacks because that's the only time I see any sort of character development at all. Otherwise, this game left me bored out of my mind. I found myself working through areas faster and faster just to get to the next cutscene in the hopes it would get somewhat better spoiler alert it does not. Most of the character development and good thought out story bits you're going to see are within the trading cards you can find throughout the map as collectibles and honestly, I'd rather read and collect all those than ever play this story again. The second issue I have with the game is with the ending I won't spoil it for anyone, but those of us that played the game understand how bad it truly is and I don't think that we would be having this discussion if it was at least a choice. However, it is not you are forced into the decision it makes, which I can guarantee is not the decision 95% of the player base would have made. The ending straight up feels like a slap in the face as you have worked the entire game for one goal and it makes all that work and effort useless. That's why I gave this game a 4/10, everything about the game is great except for the story which is a major issue in a story-based single player experience. To the team at Naughty Dog who worked on this game brushing up the mechanics, creating the environments, and working on the sound design you did an amazing job. To the team at Naughty Dog who wrote the story, I hope you never touch another project in your life. Just to reiterate this story is so poorly written that imagine if in Uncharted 4 instead of its ending Nathan gives up on his quest halfway through and goes home. That is basically how I felt after this story, honestly, I'd ask for a refund but at this point, I don't even care. I don't want to spend any more time thinking about this game, playing it, or writing about it; this is it. Finally, I am incredibly disgusted by the way Neil has handled the backlash. I'm aware this game has been review bombed but for those of us who actually played the game, his reaction to our criticisms seems like another blow to the gut. On Twitter, he's made jokes about the reviews and that's just a shame he can't admit to his own shortcomings and mistakes, but I really do expect nothing less from him as he's clearly shown he does not care about fans from the story he's written. That is why this game is a 4/10. I'd recommend never touching it, don't let it taint your opinion on the series like it did mine. Just know Ellie and Joel are out there surviving just like the end of The Last of Us and let it end there. Why didn't the developers concentrate more on delivering a engaging story that stayed true to the characters that we grew attached to.     After all, just look at RDR, RDR2 and TLOU.

    I never wanted a sequel. I know from the get go, that to make it as emotional, they’d kill Joel. Which IMO was just bad, lazy writing, but I was sure that was what they’d do.

    I was expecting a John Marston/Arthur Morgan quality story of redemption... after all, this is Naughty Dog. They thrive in story telling, don’t they?

    Nope. No they do not.
    TLOU2 takes one of them most cliched and overused plots of any bad B movie ever, and makes it into the main plot.
    Then gives up any desire for character development or even trying to stay true to what we know about these characters And destroys them immediately.
    The nice thing about TLOU was the subtle nod to Ellie being gay. Subtle being the main point... we didn’t need it rubbed in our faces, because Ellie was a great character, and so it didn’t matter what she was. It was barely a blip on the radar.
    TLOU2 takes that subtlety and beats you round the head with it so badly, that any negative comments on this game automatically get you labelled as homophobic or transphobic.

    Neil. It’s great you want to support these communities, but leave your politics out of the damn game!

    As for Joel. I can deal with character death. I do t gave to like it, but given that the RDR games are 2 of the greatest ever made IMO, I can accept it if it serves the story.

    Joel’s death does NOTHING for the story. Nothing. The man who ran over someone in the last game just because he had a “feeling” something wasn’t right, willingly goes with a group of strangers and tells them everything. He then proceeds to be beaten to death in glorious HD by a woman. The daughter of the surgeon he killed in the first game (I did mention the plot was utter dog **** didn’t I?)

    Not only are you then forced to play as the person who killed one of the most beloved characters in gaming for 10 hours, whilst we “learn” about her. Not only did I not want to know anything about her, what we did learn was boring and mundane cliched bull****.

    Then at the climax of a game all about revenge...and this game is pretty brutal. I’ve seen it described as torture porn - and that’s pretty accurate... you have your one chance of revenge taken away from you.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Reading some of these negative reviews amazes me. They're all nonsense. The game was released on the 19th and there are a bunch of reviews slamming the game that day, uninformed opinions.
    Gameplay is improved, the ability for stealth, the interaction with the scenes.
    Once again they've created a beautiful and atmospheric world with some really nice touches and attention to detail.
    The build up to climax of the intro is amazing, really well put together and it did a great job of getting me invested in the rest of plot to want to enact revenge.
    The rest of the game was great too, immersive as expected and some real good scares at certain points. It's definitely scarier in parts than the last one.
    As for character development the plot and story is very very good at shifting your perspective on how you feel about the characters. At times forcing you to go against your will and work against what you really want, but it pays off and makes you empathise really well with all parties.
    The ending is great too, ties things off nicely, but it's also quite melancholy. There's a real sense of loss that you feel on behalf of the character which given all that they've been through is understandable. The fact that naughty dog can make you feel that is a credit to their team.
    Highly recommended. I've not read a single convincing negative review here.
    The only thing I'd have liked, would have to been to also play Tommys days in Seattle.
    I'm hoping for some add-ons later down the line with that content and perhaps with journeys to Seattle.    … Expand

    I don't know as I don't follow this sort of information, but, I feel like The Last of Us 2 was written by a separate team of people to the first game? And if I didn't know any better, I'd also assume that the people who wrote this game hated the first game or at the very least hated the people who wrote it? It feels like, ironically, the writers of this game getting revenge on the writers of the first. If you've played the game, I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about.

    I was beside myself with excitement when The Last of Us 2 was first announced, and we've patiently waited to play it for years since then. I avoided spoilers as best I could, even though I heard people were not pleased with what they had seen. But now having experienced the game... I wish it was never made, and that The Last of Us was still just a standalone title. I'm so disappointed.

    The positives are:

    + The graphics. This has got to be the best looking game of this console generation so far. I absolutely adore the way this game looks. Graphically speaking, you can see and almost feel the love and care that has gone into producing this.

    + The world/environment. I wish it wasn't *quite* so linear at times, but the detail and beauty of most of the scenes in this game is, again, probably the best we've seen this console generation.

    + The interaction. Whether character to character, or interacting with the world itself, there is an awesome dynamic feeling to everything. Little things like the brilliant physics of a rope, and layers and layers of other such details give such an amazing feeling of interaction with the game.

    + Sound. Play the game with earphones, honestly, you owe it to yourself. I've experienced sound like this in some PC titles, but never in a console game. A huge step forward in sound for console games. Especially the environmental sounds, which lend massively to the immersion of the game.

    Something I thought was satisfactory.

    ~ The gameplay. I enjoyed The Last of Us gameplay back in 2013, it felt very good for a game of that time. However, with The Last of Us 2, although it is undeniably better than the first game, it hasn't advanced from 2013 as much as other games have in this regard. The controls, especially for gun fighting do feel somewhat dated. And the puzzle solving hasn't moved on from the first game, it's not particularly interesting to play in terms of that side of things - it's neither bad, nor particularly good.

    Now for what I didn't like (read absolutely hated):

    - The story. The Last of Us is a story driven game. One with one of the best stories of all time in a video game, by my reckoning. The Last of Us 2 has an absolutely woeful story, and it isn't even well told either. It's a tired old story about revenge, and it's told to the player by bouncing around, in a really out of order seeming way, between various characters and flashbacks. There were large parts of the game that were massively drawn out, for no reason, as the story payoff at the end was not nearly as important as the amount of play time dedicated to it would dictate. The direction the story takes seems like a spit in the face of anyone who loved the first game for its story and characters, which lets face it, all of us did. I found myself shouting at the screen at some moment, knowing I just watched characters I love take actions that are antithetical to their very nature, if the first game is to mean anything at all. I got angry while playing this, genuinely angry, and not in the way the game is meant to make you feel angry, I don't think.

    - The characters. The Last of Us is a story about Joel and Ellie, and their growing bond. If you like that version of Joel and Ellie, do not purchase this game. The writers of this game apparently don't like those characters, and instead like their own characters who are inserted into the game without any care taken whatsoever to help the player feel any kind of empathy for them. I do not want to play as the character you force me to play as. Most other characters are totally one dimensional and dispensable. The exact opposite of the first game.

    - The ending. Everything you do in the game, everyone who dies, every quest you complete. It's for nothing. The ending is so infuriatingly disappointing, that it was the final nail in the coffin of the idea that I might ever play the game again.

    The worst thing about this game, is that knowing it exists actually tarnishes the first game for me. I'm a little scared to play the original game again, now, knowing this is ultimately how things end up. I've never wanted to "un-play" a game so much in my life.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. honestly best game I've ever played! great story and emotional roller coaster. only thing I'd rather see is ellie to talk to Abby about why and understand her side a little at the end because ellie still didn't understand why abby did what she did. that's the point is to feel for both sides and that's what people aren't understanding it makes you feel for abby and understand why she did it. and by the end ellie turned out to be the better person. it sucks joel died but he probably deserved it. we all loved joel but the well placed and not confusing flashbacks made you miss him more and for abby makes you feel for her side too. I found myself rooting on ellie to kill abby even wile I played as abby but you slowly get to understand she's just a human too and a good character. By the end of the game I was yelling at my screen at ellie to not kill her that ellies better than that because we know abby been through some **** too. abby shared a lot of similarities to joel and thats what made it harder for me to want to kill her at the end. I do wish we spent more time with joel and less time with abby but I guess that's what the first games for… Expand

Abby on the other hand is nothing more than a selfish brat who’s backstory is only partially explored in flashbacks and nothing more. To put the cherry atop the inedible ice cream, you play as her for half the game, and so you’re stuck with this character you just want nothing to do with for a good portion of its 25-hour runtime. So since since it’s a story-based game and the story is awful, I can’t give it anything above a 4/10. As a huge fan of the first game and one that has it as one of my all-time favorite games, disappointment can’t even begin to describe what I feel right now. I honestly just wish Naughty Dog didn’t make a sequel in the first place, especially since TLOU didn’t even really need one, and this along with their workplace crunch and misleading marketing of the game have definitely put me off of purchasing any of their products in the future.… Expand

    Not only do they kill the main character at first, but they make you play to "empathize" with an unclean character who didn't even have a really powerful motive for killing Joel. And you have to see when it is f%%&ed.

    Abby's father wanted to kill Ellie, Joel had the right to blow her head off.
    Not only that ... Joel saves Abby's life in the bars against the zombies and pays him by blowing his leg off with a shotgun. Complete garbage.
    And finally, the player can't even take revenge on that nasty character by playing with Ellie.
    Playable appearance and aesthetics: Normal, it has some bugs, but the graphics are fine.

    It’s been about 48 hours since I finished the game, and I am still completely awestruck by it. The gameplay, the graphics, the complex and highly emotional story that makes you challenge your own beliefs. I have never been so emotionally devastated by any piece of media like this before, let alone just video games. And it’s divisive, as any work of art should be.     This game broke my heart, thanks Naughty Dog for exactly making such games. You're best! People are angry with this game but do not even understand why.     All I can say is I hate it

    Graphics : 10/10 the graphics is at best for a console video game

    Fighting mechanics : 3/10 nothing new, only few animations which was implemented in fighting and of course now you can stealth prone... which was introduced in gaming maybe over 15 years ago in metal gear solid. Story : 0 /10

    And of course, the STORY is garbage. In a story driven video game the story is what matters.

    In this game the characters make stupid choices.

    One example is the first game game Joel, he just give his name to a group of strangers with guns. Knowing that there are people looking for him after the choice he made in the first game.

    And of course there is Abby, which will kill Joel in a brutal way at the very first 2 hours of the game.

    Then you’ll be forced to play as this character who killed the best thing about the first game for almost 11 hours. In this game they kill Joel and make you play as the character who killed him, then try to make you sympathize with Abby. Which is almost impossible after what she did. The rest of the story feels boring, thanks to the bad writing.

    And what makes the game worse is the forced agenda with meaningless characters

    Definitely a Zero from me as a fan of the original game.

    And maybe it might get 5 or 6/10 from a non-biased revier    … Expand

    I absolutely despised playing through this game. Playing 10 hours as a despicable antagonist is not fun or engaging at all, and it has by far the WORST ending out of any game i've ever played (including ME3).

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
