They gave no respect for previous game characters, by torturing and killing them and in the end of hours of poor game play reminding worst of uncharted series and playing as annoying characters you just can’t take a revenge, you let go your main enemy. Poor script, written maybe by some Neil Druckmann’s random boyfriends from the street with 0 knowledge of how to write it, bad gameplay and oh... it’s just a shame.… Expand

    Shame on Naughty Dog for destroying such an epic franchise in such a disgusting and gruesome way. I am a so glad I cancelled my collectors edition after I saw the leaks. I am a huge fan of the uncharted series, which definitely are masterpieces, but to give this game a 10, so many reviewers got paid....this is definitely a disasterpiece.... I am just going to keep playing my tomb raider,Shame on Naughty Dog for destroying such an epic franchise in such a disgusting and gruesome way.     This game is a disaster, and it's apparent from the offset. Reading the critic reviews would have you believe that this is the greatest game ever made, I suspect their ratings have more to do with ideology and financial incentive than actual objectivity. The game isn't particularly pretty to look at in context of the budget, and while graphics aren't everything this 'game' doesn't have much else to offer. The story devolves from the first game into a petty revenge fantasy, I could harp on about this but honestly what's the point? The characters are totally different from the first game, there's no consistency. You're lead to believe that Joel will play a large part of things, they kill him off within a couple of hours. A man who trusts nobody and is a hardened survivor walks into a room full of thugs and announces himself, something he never would have done and simply isn't believable.

    There's a horrific 'love scene' in which we're forced to watch Abby get railed that's more hardcore than some of the things you can find on pornhub. I did not want to see this, I don't understand why it was in the game. The fact Sony has censored the likes of anime games yet allowed this is the height of hypocrisy.

    The gameplay? Stale and dated, the gameplay in the first game wasn't exactly stellar either but it had the story to carry it. This has nothing, it's not worth your time or your money. It's a strange fetish created by the self absorbed narcissist Neil Druckmann.    … Expand

    Story is bland, gameplay is weak, and they handle the characters very poorly. This feels like the story was written by an amature on a fanfic website. The gameplay makes very little in an effort to feel like an improvement from TLOU1. This game will ruin the story for you. If you like TLOU1, do yourself a favor and forget this ever existed.

    The story, characters, are crap. The only thing redeeming about this game is the graphics. Such a far FAR fall from the first one. It is such a shame since I have been looking forward of this game for so long. Should have just left the game alone.

    A misunderstood masterpiece. Visually and technically the game is stunning. The fights are engaging and intense. The game is just a fun and enjoyable experience.

They killed off Joel so early in the series just so they can dangle flashback scenes just to make you feel sad is just is ridiculous. I would have at least wanted to see some note of those moments before killing Joel off. Forcing you play as Abby for the whole second half of the game was a stupid decision on their part. They don't make her a likeable so you'd actually want to play as her at all before forcing you to. She's an adulterer with no remorse for killing Joel right after he saved her. I know Joel's crimes were atrocious but so are abby's and the whole WLF's. Pulling the whole: "look how relatable and human these **** are... you know the ones who slaughtered people and whole towns. But look they've got dogs, families, kids, and schools. Ooo they didn't kill Ellie and Tommy because they weren't targeting them so they must be good people" even though they're warmongers who've gotten an entire town that looks so impossibly perfect and pristine that its warmonger influences nowhere to be seen in it was so unbelievable that it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand the overall message, the execution was just awful. Thought I don't believe I don't believe my score should be as low as it is, I think Naughty Dog needs to get the message across that due to their track record and long 4+ year gaps they need to be held at a higher standard to what we ended up with this dissapointing game.… Expand

    The story is not strange because it is not a bisexual person and the main character is gay.

    Even if the PC thought came out, I wouldn't be disappointed if the story was well-organized.

    However, it was hard to understand the story itself because I couldn't grasp the emotions of the main characters and people around me in the game.

    All I could think about was why?

    Don't bother with this one, this is not the sequel people wanted. This is some pitiful revenge story injected with SJW agenda full of hate.. pros: graphics and game play are good but story is so progressive bs that it ruined the franchise and is an insult to the first game :-( very sad about it, hopefully Cyberpunk 2077 will be what people expect.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has amazing graphics and pretty good gameplay, however the most important aspect of this game is the storyline, which unfortunately has been butchered and slaughtered in the most inhumane way possible.

    Just a few hours into the game the protagonist is thrown away into a pile of trash, like an obsolete 1.44mb floppy disk. This decision was made not only because of the clearly sexist and biased political views of the story writers but also very possibly because their imagination was insufficient to live up to the story masterpiece that was in the first game.

    So what do you do when you have a severe lack of imagination and lack of self confidence into living up to the expectations?
    You chicken out and kill the most important character of the game so you can make new ones, this way nobody will be able to call you out for your failure to do a proper sequel to the game.
    Unfortunately, this was so poorly executed that it makes story lines from films such as GhostBusters 2016 sound like the most innovative and creative writing you've ever seen.

    If you are a true TLOU fan, then this game is not for you as you will find it a complete failure story-wise.
    If you are a hardcore fan of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, then you will find many fingerprints of those 2 in this game, so it should have some sort of appeal to you.

    You may think that these are harsh words, but there are simply to many examples in game where you can find the storyline killing the entire game atmosphere, i'm not even going to dwell into the clear political agendas that this entire game is all about, lets pretend that those issues dont exist and just consider the story as a whole instead.

    The Good
    In the first game you get to play as Joel daughter, then Joel and then Ellie finding a unique storyline about family and hope in the most dificult and improbable scenarios of a persons life.

    In TLOU2, most of Ellie & Joel memory flashbacks are heartwarming, even if predictable and expected, they get to you, frankly these memories were so good that if you sold the game and expanded solely on these memories the entire time it would have worked much better than this actual storyline, it would also allow you to evolve the main story of this game later in TLOU III explaining to the players how JOEL died. That would probably work so much better than this as the whole game is constantly spamming you with flashbacks making it annoying very quickly.

    The Bad
    In this game despite so many content being about Joel and Ellie relationship, you don't ever get to play as Joel, instead you play as Ellie and Joel murderer (not skippable).
    You get Family Guy type of flashbacks, which becomes annoying very quickly, by the time you're 50% into the game, you're already frustrated with the annoying interruptions from the main game, you are then forced to switch characters from the new protagonist to the antagonist, again, at the worst moment in time possible.
    As if it was not enough that you have to play as Joel killer and to fight and almost kill Ellie, you then get another bunch of annoying flashbacks from the antagonist life, the idea here was to allow the player to somehow feel some empathy for the antagonist, however, this character story line is so boring and long, you just cant stop thinking about the main game.
    Everytime i was forced to play with Abby i couldnt help to feel a severe lack of interest into the game and i had to almost force myself to keep going, promising myself the rest of the game story could be better.

    Although the game tries to imply that Abby is human too and has her own problems, the story is too flawed and too generic to transmit this kind of sentiment to the player.

    The rest of the story is more or less the same, bland and generic, you really dont feel any empathy towards any of the game characters dying, even when Joel brother was almost killed was a "meh" moment and his comeback a total cliche.

    The Ugly
    You might think that im done with the negative side of the story but wait! Theres more! You end up sacrificing the life of your friends, permanently crippling Joel brother, murdering lots and lots of Abbys "friends" just so you can get into a final fight with her and loosing 2 fingers, at the end of the fight, when you're drowning her for good, you give up and let her go because somehow you're starting to think that there is too much killing in this world, so the perfect logical conclusion is you kill everyone except the murderer of Joel, the hole in this plot is so big not even a blue star could cover it.

    In the end its obvious why the story is such a disaster. ND programmers & artists did an amazing job, since the game graphics and gameplay are so good that this generic, bland and poorly written storyline is an insult to all the years wasted programming, designing and modelling this game. Neil Druckmann had 1 job and failed miserably at it.    … Expand

    I know that many people are not going to read this but for those who actually finished the game and did not understand the ending (or doesn`t know how to feel about it), I will leave you with an analysis that may be useful to some:

    Ellie's hatred for Abby is an external reflection of Ellie's self-hatred.
    Joel deeply hurt Abby and Ellie in different ways and they both punished him for it. Ellie hates Abby for torturing Joel to death, especially since she didn't have a chance to restore her relationship with Joel. This is a parallel to her situation with Ellie because she also tortured Joel, she did it for years but in a different way, and I would say that in a more painful way for Joel, and that was to disconnect from him. Ellie hates herself for torturing him like this and for not restoring their relationship when there was still time. That is the real pain that she has been trying to avoid facing throughout this quest for revenge, she is like a "junkie" who uses revenge to avoid dealing with those painful feelings of regret. This is the vision she has while she is drowning Abby (when she has the flashback of the scene on the porch with Joel) and chooses not to kill her. She is not only forgiving Abby, but more importantly forgiving herself and finally coming to a resolution as to what happened between her and Joel, I think Ellie leaving her guitar leaning against the window and walking away symbolically represents that she has forgiven Joel, and she made peace with what happened between them and she's finally ready to move on and start a new life.

    When I finished The Last Of Us Part II for the first time, I felt empty and honestly, I didn't know what to feel, whether I liked it or not, but after much deliberation, I think it is truly a masterpiece.

    People who say the game is just about "revenge=bad" or that the ending "feels utterly, hopelessly pointless", I think they really didn't get it (or didn't play it). Because this game is about forgiveness.

    This game is not at all what the fans expected, but I think that's what makes it so great.    … Expand

    The game play is quite good, it has similar mechanic as the previous game and it is crisp, exciting to play. However, unliked part 1, there is no motivation to continue to play. The story line is absolutely garbage, it makes very little sense and is offen cringeworth. I don't know how they went from such a beautiful story in the first game to this.

    - Abby é capturada pelos Seraphites (um grupo religioso extremista preconceituoso), mas foge de lá com duas minas japas, sendo que uma delas, pensa que é homem (é trans).
    - Abby então descobre que Ellie estava matando seus amigos e parte em busca dela, acha a Ellie e aí mata o Jesse, atira no Tommy e dá um pau na Ellie e na Dina (igual eu disse antes ali em cima). Mas não mata elas, pois a oriental trans lá, pede pra ela não fazer isso.
    - Depois disso, Abby recebe um convite para se mudar para uma nova base dos Vagalumes, mas ela e seu(sua) amigo(a) oriental são capturadas por um grupo de caras que caçam pessoas e fazem elas de escravos.

    Parte 3

    - O jogo então corta e mostra Ellie e Dina vivendo numa fazendo e criando o filho que Dina teve com Jesse, como uma espécie de broken back mountain feminino. - Ellie ainda está perturbada e com vontade de matar a Abby.
    - Depois de uma visita de Tommy, Ellie resolve ir de atrás de sua vingança. Dina diz que se Ellie for, ela terminará com ela e não estará mais ali quando Ellie voltar.
    - Ellie vai mesmo assim, invade o acampamento dos "escravizadores", mata mais uma pá de gente até que acha Abby, que agora tava toda judiada, magra e sem músculos.
    - Ellie ajuda os escravos a escapar, mas desafia Abby para uma luta, ameaçando matar o(a) amigo(a) oriental da Abby.
    - Abby aceita e as duas saem no soco. Dessa vez Ellie vence e começa a afogar Abby no mar, porém, Abby arranca dois dedos de Ellie com uma mordida. Ellie não desiste e continua inforcando ela, até que, do nada lembra do Joel, e libera Abby, perdoando-a e deixando-a fugir com seu(sua) amigo(a).

    Naughty Dog and sony have crafted a masterful interactive experience that takes you on one of the wildest rides in storytelling history. You cannot but love how they wove the story around the events of TLOU1 into a completely different story in Part 2. They took the choices we all had to make in Part 1 and made them consequences we had to deal with and they    Nothing short of amazing.
    Naughty Dog and sony have crafted a masterful interactive experience that takes you on one of the wildest rides in storytelling history. You cannot but love how they wove the story around the events of TLOU1 into a completely different story in Part 2. They took the choices we all had to make in Part 1 and made them consequences we had to deal with and they showed how that cycle of violence can be an unending grueling experience with no satisfaction unless one fights one's own internal demons. This game admittedly set the bar really high expectations wise, I understand why people are angry, they had expectations that they had created that were not met, but this game is best played with an open mind to enjoy the wonderful cinematic experience that it is.    … Expand

    This game is a disgrace for everything we love about video games. Companies that try to force a certain political agenda upon us, the users, deserve bankruptcy and nothing else. Don't buy this piece of horse **** and hit them where it hurts the most - their income.

I have no problem with the voice actors, Abby, or even the agenda they pushed heavily onto our plates. I gave it a chance so I could at least say my peace. My problem is with the people who thought this game was the best they could possibly come up with. The graphics are stunning, the music is beautiful, and the story.... blows. Literally blows. How can you manipulate everyone who loved Joel dearly showing us you guys putting Joel in the main trailers and having the audacity to put him on the tin game case with Ellie for more false advertising. And then when you play the game they proceed to kill him off 2 hours into the game and Abby screaming at him “do you know who I am!?” I can’t believe you’re okay with this and think it’s a fantastic game. Neil druckmann ruined this game for everyone who painstakingly avoided trolls and spoilers for years and this is the best you can come up with?! I hope no one buys another game from naughty dog because you just lost everyone who stood by you since Jack n daxter like myself. I deleted the game once I finished and it left a bad taste in my mouth. To kill Joel, to spit on Joel, and to spit on us to play his killer for half the game. You should be ashamed for the false advertisement to the loyal fans that’s backed you through the years and the micro transactions in TLOU. I will never buy another game from naughty dog because you lied, once you lie you’ll just do it again with another game right? Maybe when Neil isn’t in the top seat I’ll give a view to your trailers and actually look through the leaks and spoilers when the time comes. Instead, just in the very first act of the game Joel is brutally murdered in an absolutely naive and stupid way by a character that you barely know for 10 minutes, and then the game expects you to play as that new character as if nothing happened.

    Seriously?

    The ending is also silly and negates virtually everything that the storytellers were trying to preach.

    This is quite possibly the worst game sequel ever made. DO NOT BUY.

    Don't even get me started on the copyright strike abuse by MUSO (read: Sony).

    P.S. For the people of the "press" and fanboys shouting that all the negative reviews are from bots, trolls or homophobic people: the LGBT aspects of the game are completely irrelevant. No one is complaining about that. I don't give a crap that Ellie is a lesbian. We already knew that from the first game's DLC. The atmosphere is dark, charmless and inhospitable which greatly helps you to immerse yourself in this beautifully crafted world. The voice acting likewise is extremely good, the actors did a phenomenal job. However, the first game was not praised for its cutting edge graphics or revolutionary gameplay but for its immersive and truly groundbreaking storytelling. The Last of Us 2 story is an unmitigated disaster, the game fails to form a connection between the player and the new characters the way the original did. The plot is full of horror and outrageous scenes just for the sake of it and lacks narrative cohesion. What I disliked the most was the constant jumping between flashbacks and current time events, although the flashbacks were arguably the highlight of the game, it took away from the immersion, it would have been great if the game started off with the flashbacks and then played out as a continuous story. The characters undergo almost no development throughout the game and as the player we do not get involved in their individual stories and experiences. Most of the characters returning from the original game are almost unrecognisable. The game reminds of Game of Thrones season 8 and Star Wars: the last Jedi where ‘subverting expectation’ was more important than creating a compelling storyline. If you enjoyed the original game because of the gameplay, you will have an absolute blast with this game. However if you were looking for a continuation of one of the best video game stories ever, you are in for a huge disappointment.

    The game is NOT garbage nor a masterpiece. I enjoyed certain aspects of this game but the story was not one of them. I highly recommended waiting for a sale or buying a pre-owned copy. You can pick one fairly cheap off eBay. The place is flooded with this game.    … Expand

    I think deception is a word that translate the meaning of this DLC of the first game. This is not a new TLOU game, is more like a really sick joke than a game.

    TLOU 1 is my favorite game of all time, I played it a lot, I played at least 7 times the campaign. And I just love everything about It. The mechanics of the game is simply awesome, the plot is extraordinarily immersive and beautyfull, this game make you love all the characters of it. Maria, Tommy, Bill and of course, Joel and Ellie. TLOU 1 tell the history of this duo in a simple and fantastic way, the fights against the enemies and even the discussion of Joel and Ellie is made in a way that everything fits perfect. TLOU 1 is a MASTERPIECE in the plot, in the mechanics of how the game works and how this "New World" is against everyone and obviously, how the characters are built to fit in the game.

    TLOU "Pt. 2" is the very opposite of TLOU 1, the characters are there for the hell of it, however much the mechanics and adds of this new game are really cool, like breaking windows and really modifying your weapons is insane, and the setting is amazing, as the sounds of everything. But this is a game based in the plot, and if the plot is terrible, so the game is just a piece of garbage. It starts by killing my favorite character of all time in a stupid way. JOEL EVEN SAID IN THE FIRST GAME NOT TO TRUST ANYONE, SO HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO BELIEVE THAT HE WOULD JUST BELIEVE IN A TOTAL STRANGER LIKE ABBY!!!! WOW NICE ONE NAUGHTY DOG!!!
    In this game, not like TLOU 1, they don't mind making you like the characters, the developers criated some flat characters and expect that you to care about them, and they expect you to be sad about their deaths, thing that we don’t care about. You are supposed to like and love the new characters, but when they die, you simply ignore it and keep playing. And in the middle of the game, you are forced to play with the killer of Joel, for 9 ****** hours. And they want you to believe that Abby is a good person by forcing events that make it seem like she really is, and of couse, in a terrible way. The final is just horrible, they make Ellie forgive Abby in a trash way, with the excuse that Ellie doesn’t want to become like Abby, Which is honestly idiotic considering everyone who was killed by Ellie. Speaking about Ellie, they took a ready-made protagonist and threw it in the trash, everything that shaped Ellie for a deep character in the first game was thrown in the trash and she turned into a dumb flat character who only thinks of revenge and nothing else. It's frustating how bad the plot of the second game is, this is not a continuation of the masterpiece that was the first game. This is nothing but a bad joke turned into a triple A game. By killing Joel, our beloved protagonist, you simply ignored all the mass of fans of the first game and stepped on your feelings.
    For new people that are playing this game, they could tell that is a great game. But in my opinion, this "sequel" is nothing more than a stupid sick joke, this thing could be called "They Laughed at Us" because the developers did it with the lovers of the first game. They think that making a SJW protagonist is a reason to make the plot horrible, while you play 30 hours of campaign suffering expecting that it ends.
    Last but no Least, there's no reason to force you to like Abby and understand her. i played all the TLOU 1 with Joel, so i love him, and i really care about him, and killing Joel will not make me happy, not at all. Killing Joel means that you ignore the hole thing that was the first game, all the relationships and moments that made Joel a fantastic character, and you put an terrible excuse that "we are goin' to make a game different from all the others". This game sure doesn't deserve the GOTY, TLOU "Pt,

    The Last of Us is a beautiful, immersive, emotionally compelling story, with visceral, high intensity gameplay. Unfortunately none of that holds a candle to the disappointment of the story. There are many complaints that can be said about Joel's death at the beginning of the game. It's unnecessary, it paints Joel out of character, etc. but that's not even the biggest thing that irks me about this game. What infuriates me the most is that half way through the game we abandon our stance as Ellie on a warpath for revenge, and pick up as Abby for THE REST OF THE GAME.

    Now don't get me wrong, Abby as an isolated character is fine. However, the game sets you up to play as Ellie on her mission for revenge, then halfway through, they pull the rug out from under you and force you to play as the person you hate the most. This is done in such a manner that so blatantly and oppressively FORCES empathy down your throat. Abby is really just a sweet girl who loved her father. She's accepting of all her friends, she loves dogs, hell she even has a romance plot. This perfectly mirrors Ellie's plot of revenge and killing by making Abby look infinitely more like a real protagonist.

    Instead of giving us an immersive emotional experience as Ellie getting revenge and closure, we're met with this wild rollercoaster of a journey that goes so far as to force us to fight our beloved Ellie as Abby. If that isn't insulting enough, the game has such a headstrong focus on the idea of "VIOLENCE BAD" that it derails the entire plot. Every time you kill an enemy, one of their teammates shouts out their name in grief, same with dogs. Ellie is painted as an absolute monster for killing off members of what is essentially a glorified terrorist organization, in search of the woman who killed her father figure. Sounds reasonable to me. This pacifist perspective is held so rigidly that the game ends in a pointless stalemate of Ellie just letting Abby walk away, after losing everything.

    I see this as the biggest bout of disrespect to the playerbase. It wasn't enough that they killed off our favorite character, then made us play as his killer while forcing the message that "shes not a bad person!" At the conclusion of the game, Abby and Lev go free to live out their lives, and Ellie is left maimed and alone. She lost a friend, a father, a partner, even a child at this point. This whole journey was for nothing and leave our main character broken. All for what? The message that revenge is bad?

    I could go on and on about how Abby is such a poorly written character, displayed in a way to force so much misplaced empathy from the player. I could complain that Abby's revenge mission is ultimately more petty than Ellie's, seeing as how her father worked for a terrorist organization and was basically going to murder a child without any consent. I could complain that the game was nothing but virtue signaling and trying to appeal to a holier-than-thou audience. Above all I'm just disappointed that Neil Druckmann did Ellie, Joel, and all of the fans dirty with this game.

    If you didn't play the first game, this is an intense and emotionally draining rollercoaster ride. If you played the first game and loved Joel and Ellie, this will only be a big middle finger to you.

    This rant doesn't even begin to contain all my thoughts on this game, but I know it's likely nobody will read this anyway so I'll stop here. Congratulations Neil on your best selling game and all of it's focus on what you think are perfect societal issues to sidetrack your game with. I'll be replaying the first game to try to block out this nightmare and remind myself what a compelling story with lovable characters really is.

    P.S. It's a dick move to include Joel in a trailer implying that he's with us throughout the game, only to flip the script on us and replace him with a side character for the actual game. **** yall.    … Expand

    Unbelievable. This game is insanely good, even though we lose someone near and dear. The acting is first class, with both graphics and gameplay adding to the sense of intense realism with every single environment. A particular flashback really got me in the feels, and the guitar interludes are superbly handled.

If you loved the first The Last of Us game, story and characters, please, for the love of God, do NOT play this game! Naughty Dog does everything possible to ruin and destroy the story, dynamics and bonds earned and enjoyed with the original beautigul The Last of Us story. For example, in the beginning if the game, they Kill Joel (a Trans Abby smashes his head in with a golf club while licking her lips and slurping down the blood, skull and brain matter that splatters on her face, all the while moaning in ecstasy), then, after about 10 hours as Ellie, SJW Naughty Dog has the utter audacity to force you to play as Trans-Abby (the one that smashed in Joel's head with a golf club), and begins changing the narrative by painting Joel and Ellie as the "Bad Guys" while making the "new" Trans- Abby character into a "Superhuman-Superhero", aka "Marry Sue", meaning "IT" is now the most powerful character in the game, all the while painting "it" as a poor, victimized "thing" that has suffered so much at the evil and despicable hands of Joel and Ellie, that we MUST all feel sorry for "IT" and grant "IT" the revenge "IT" deserves by giving Abby the privilege and the obligatory, anointed right of sadistically, maliciously, brutally, maiming, destroying and finally murdering our beloved and cherished Ellie and Joel characters in conjunctionwith the e tire original The Last of Us storyline! Ultimately, Naught Dog forces us to suffer through this abomination of a story because Ellie and Joel were not SJW enough, so they must be punished for their sins with pornographic violence inflicted by a total "Marry Sue", "IT" character, aka Abby.     The Last of Us Part II is a bit like marmite, you are either going to hate it or love it. For sure the game isn't perfect in one or two ways, such as the length of time it takes to complete it, but overall the Last of Us Part II is a visually stunning game with an equally stunning soundtrack.     The first part is a masterpiece, this one sucks. The only highlight of the game is political correctness but it contains lines of racism to Asian. Hilarious, Sony is not a Japanese company now? I hope Sony can sell naught dog to EA and get them break apart.

The gameplay and graphics may be its redemeable points since they are truly amazing, but that is to be expected of any AAA game nowadays so its not an accomplishment. The story has been the biggest focus for the franchise since the first game and its DLC, but this time around it seems as if Neil's creativity has been dulled to the extreme, the structure of the story is incoherent and has plot hole after plot hole every 5 minutes, with the sad reality that neither Joel or Ellie are really the protagonists, this isn´t a game about them but rather a mediocre attempt to introduce a new protagonist for the saga and why we should care about her, but despite the great efforts of Naughty Dog, she does not induce any kind of sympathy or attachment from the player, after laying the game for hours all you feel for her is the desire to get her kmilled and erase her sorry existence from the story as quickly as possible, but the game even robs of this in the end, with Ellie letting her go in a climax as boring and badly written as the rest of the game.… Expand

    The first game conveniently used McCarthy’s The Road as an “inspiration”, this game’s original story ends up ironically exposing how inadequate Neil Druckmann actually is as a story-teller.

    There are plenty of argument out there already discussing why the story is bad so I won’t dive into details but let me point to the obvious one here - how do you expect the audience to care about the characters in the 2nd half when you already *spoiler* all of them in the first?

    To be perfectly clear, I’ve got nothing against *spoiler* getting killed. The critical flaw lies in the story’s structure itself - when you can’t connect to the characters and the audience stopped caring, the 2nd half of the game felt so long and patronizing. Every single plot point felt so contrived and worked too hard seemingly trying to “influence” the choices you have no power to make in the first place.

    An easy fix would be giving this game multiple endings based on the moral choices you had to make, which shouldn’t be too hard, I’ll be happy to take just two endings - to kill or not to kill.

    Instead, Neil Druckmann made those moral choices for you - preaches down to your neck be precise forcing you to have emotional connection with characters that you already know will be *spoiler*. That’s precisely why at the end of the game you got this bad tastes in your mouth and felt nothing even remotely close to that cathartic release from the first game.

    I’ll leave it at a Joel quote in the game; ‘See there was a sequel. It wasn’t as good.’    … Expand

    As soon as content is added or removed to any media device, in this case, a game, to appease a certain demographic, that piece of media fails. The community wants good gameplay and goof story above all else. Forcing “certain things” down our throats in a way that’s so obvious you’re just trying to send a message is a sure fire way to kill your fan base.

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
