    I was so hyped for this game for years and it delivered absolutely nothing expect amazing graphics and gameplay... that’s it. Characters suck and no I’m not a anti homo or anti woman. No one likes Abby. They ruined Ellie and Joel and made them stupid. I couldn’t care less about Dina or Jesse. I’m gonna pretend this sequel doesn’t exist.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is another piece of evidence that the industry is growing up. Alongside God of War, this game will be remembered by many people as a watershed moment in game narrative - and unlike the AAA narrative space that the original helped create, the Last of Use Part II has stretched beyond the story of a taciturn father figure to focus on a relatively unique perspective - that of the kids who are left behind when the last connection to the old world are out of the picture.

    //Graphics//
    One thing that everyone tends to agree on (even those who profess to loath the game) is that it's a looker. And it is. This game is so beautiful (even on a base PS4) that I found myself stopping over and over again just to take it in. The amount of detail in each play space is phenomenal. The variance in locations is impressive (given that the game takes place in one city). The lighting, the effects, the arena design, all fantastic. There are many locations in this game that will stick with me just as long as the story beats.

    But the real star here is the facial animations. A testament to the actors and the animators that even the smallest emotion comes through in a believable way, helping create untold depth to the characters.

    //Gameplay//
    This game starts where the first left off and goes a little deeper with the mechanics. Make no mistake, it plays better than the original in terms of moment to moment combat, but it is certainly more of the same - and certainly less impressive than the original gameplay trailer. Still, it provides enough variety to stop you from getting bored.

    What might be more divisive however is the amount of downtime between combat sections. This is a slower-paced affair than the first game. With long stretches of exploration and scavenging between brief-but-brutal battle arenas. For some, this might be a downside. For me, however, it made each encounter feel much more personal and important and helped me avoid the fatigue that tends to set in games like Doom or even Ellie's last adventure.

    //Story//
    When you see people giving this game a 3 or a 0 rating, their main complaint is the story. Right out the gate then, these reviews aren't really credible - since visuals, design, and gameplay alone should net this game more than these paltry scores. It is ironic that the same people who complain about the big outlets being paid to give this game 10 out of 10 scores are putting out reviews that are disingenuous. Story is but one pillar of game design, even a complete miss in this department shouldn't sink a game to a 3 or 0 - if so, Breath of the Wild should be sitting just as low on the scale.

    The story of Last of Us II is a thoughtful discussion on revenge and the cycle of violence. Yeah. You've all heard the copy on this. No surprises here. But it's also a story about the world the generation born to the apocalypse want to make. Will it be marked by the destruction and violence of the old guard, or will it be something new? Time and again along their journey toward this answer, our characters watch parents and parent figures fall victim to their violence and will struggle to find the right way forward. It's a mature story and a thoughtful one, well-told and with a conclusion that is well-earned.

    However. It is not an easy story to tell in the medium. A lot of people are going to check out at the start, when the inciting incident for the story occurs. More are going to check out at the mid-point, where Naughty Dog forces the player to do something that is uncomfortable by design. That's okay. No one is to blame if this isn't the story for you. Not Naughty Dog. Not the player. Pick up another game and move on. Or give it some time and come back to it - I promise that it's worth it, if you're willing to give the developers the benefit of the doubt.

    For me, the story is a knockout. A real sign of the medium maturing. And while it is a little over-long, by the time the credits roll, it more and earns its runtime.

    //Elephant in the Room//
    This is a watershed moment for representation in videogames. It has white, black, Asian, Middle Eastern, male, female, trans, straight, gay, bi, old, young characters throughout. The main character is a lesbian. A major character is a straight woman whose body reflects years of training and warfighting (no, she's not trans as many "not transphobic" people keep shouting. Another member of the core cast is trans. A couple are white straight males.

    This is not a game that pushes a SJW agenda (whatever that is). It's a game that represents a wide range of people who happen to exist in this world. And it's really nice to get to see stories from these perspectives - especially those perspectives that I don't personally know. Because, isn't that kind of the magic of videogames as a medium? That we can inhabit worlds and perspectives different from our own?

I owned it on PS3 then bought it on PS4 for the upgraded graphics, TLOU Part II is a terrible story - it's like it was written by someone that had no connection at all to the 1st TLOU. The only connections I made to this story was when I play Ellie or the flashbacks to Ellie and Joel (loved the spaceship launch part - I cried). When I had to play as Abby I felt nothing (no fear of dying, didn't care, no joy at her victories, didn't care, no sympathy for her when she was hit or hurt or taken captive, didn't care). I want to give this a 0 but due to the graphics, scenery, game mechanics and playing as Ellie I give it a 3. I will tell you that I wont be buying it when it comes out on PS5 and I will never buy a Naughty Dog game again on the faith that you actually give a crap about your fans. Naughty Dog has the right to make a story that they own the rights to and I have the right to not to give them my money unless they earn my business back with thoughtful well written story driven games like TLOU1. People just really need to try playing with an open mind because the world of The Last of Us is not a world of happy endings and fantasies. One downside I guess is there were unnecessary scenes that didn't quite impress me but overall, it really is a nice game. Sure the visuals and graphics were stunning - I was expecting that - and the the gameplay was decent, but masterpiece? GTFOH with that BS. I wanted to give this a 0, but I'm trying to be somewhat objective. You kill Joel in the first couple of hours and then make us play as Abby and expect us to feel some kind of empathy for her? WTF!? Joel was beloved, and in comes this crazy b*tch who we have no background knowledge or understanding of who bludgeons his face in with a golf club. I was looking for ways to kill her as I played her. Then, Ellie goes on a killing rampage to avenge Joel - the only reason I stayed to the end - but she lets Abby go because love trumps hate or something? Dumpster fire. I'm writing this as the credits roll on the game, nor did I watch the spoilers leaked online. If you enjoyed the first one, you will more than likely utterly despise this one. Joel and Ellie are not the same characters; straight-shooting and hardened heroes no longer describe them. What you are left with are similar but significantly altered shadows. Like another man said below, I checked out 2 hours in, and never came back.

    The rest of the story is just... bad. There's an attempt to make you care about other characters in the game, but you end up not because of everything surrounding them. You try to keep playing, and then you realize that you're not having fun. You're just watching a train wreck that hit a bus while carrying a nuclear bomb that set off a volcano that froze the planet in endless winter destroying all life. It's. That. Bad.

    The gameplay is worsened from the previous one. There's an effort to make combat more combaty, but I remind you that this is a mostly a stealth game. Stealth, depending on the difficulty, you may never use. Listen mode is utterly useless now (unless they are right next to you). Enemies will change patterns depending often you reset a point (this is more frustrating than enjoyable). You have to continuously turn the camera to keep hitting the same enemy. Your first skill tree is useless; the last 2 are your best. The game will not let you turn off tutorials until you beat it and prepare for condescending 'hints' when you die.

    The diversity in the game is paper thin and hollow. And it feels more like checking off boxes saying, "Look who we have in the game!" versus actually doing the work to weave their stories into a compelling narrative. Diversity is not a bad thing. Half-assing it is. A black character is not just black, a lesbian is not just a lesbian, and a jewish person is not just that. They are more and that should have been explored through the lens of that world. You will see almost every race in here. You will see almost every marginalized 'major' group in here. None of which contributes well to the over all story.

    The art and graphics are solid. Game looks beautiful.

    Do not buy this game. Borrow it from someone, or watch a Let's Play. The ending is remarkably awful, and there is no satisfaction in finishing it. The Last of Us Part II was an artsy attempt to change the first; it succeeded. Neil Druckmann said that this game is about hate. He is right about that; you end up hating the game.

    However unfortunately even the gameplay felt empty and ruined to me by the absolutely disgusting taste akin to vomit that this game left in my mouth. There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said here or great analysis videos on youtube but in basics I'll just leave this:

    I have been obsessed with TLOU since its release. It is a masterpiece and its storyline that closely follows Ellie and Joel as their relationship develops (as well as each of them separately as characters) is what brings everything about that game into harmony. I've played it so many times I've lost count. TLOU2 on the other hand is such a blatant insult to the first game I couldn't even force myself to finish it and instead settled on reading what happens before I promptly deleted the game as well as the extra content I got with my special edition preorder.

    When the game got delayed for the final time I was given my money back by playstation and told I could repurchase the game if I still wished to. I now wish I hadn't. What a complete waste of money on a game that is pointless and brings the player no joy or enrichment. What made TLOU so special is gone, now in TLOU2 its legacy and reputation are left in ruins due to the garbled mess that is TLOU2.

The first game included an amazing world, immersive storyline, interesting (main and side) characters, and excellent pacing. As much as it pains me to say this, The Last of Us II definitely fails to deliver on these expectations and standards set by the first game. Part II is riddled with plot holes, questionable character choices, boring side characters, and terrible pacing. The revenge plot is so poorly executed, and the writing is just overall lazy. Although the graphics, animation, sound, and gameplay are amazing, the true appeal of a Last of Us game is the story. In the first game, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, and I was thoroughly looking forward to the next thing. In this game, I was sad, annoyed, and bored. It seems like everything (story-wise) that was good in the first game was completely sacrificed in this one for the new characters. The characters we know and love in the first game are deconstructed to fit the lazy storyline. I was so unattached to the story, that by the end of certain segments, I would have completely forgotten what I was doing before, which characters had died already, and what characters’ names were. Usually, I am EXTREMELY aware of these story elements. I cannot believe that after so much patience and excitement, this is what the franchise has come to. I am utterly heartbroken as I know the insane potential this second game had, even though a sequel was not needed.

    Some people tell me “oh, you didn’t understand the story” or “that’s what the game wants you to feel”. But I don’t believe I need to dig that deep to tell myself that this game was good. I’ve never done that for any other game I’ve played, and I won’t give any special treatment to this one. If you’re wondering whether its worth it to get this game, get it if it’s on sale for $20 or less just to experience it if you really want. This coming from someone who’s favorite game of all time is the first Last of Us. As far as I can tell, The Last of Us Part II does not exist.

    I have nothing against LGBT, but why kill off Joel? Yeah, he wasn't a good person, but can you at least show some respect?
    And for what our beloved Joel was killed? For having a new bland character, that authors force you to play as for half of the game and force you to feel bad for her.
    You know what?
    I. DON'T. GIVE. A. FLIP.
    Abby is a goddamn nobody, who killed Joel. The hell we supposed to feel bad for her?
    Also, what was the point of adding LGBT if you never use it? Yeah, why explore the relationship between Ellie and Dina, when we can have the "dark and edgy" revenge plot?
    You know, The Last Of Us is a franchise based on a story, not the gameplay. Without the story, this game costs nothing. Oh and the game is just boring.
    I wanted to love this game. I really did. But I just can't.
    You were the Chosen One Last Of Us II! You were supposed to save 2020, not ruin it even more!

How great the story was, how the gameplay was still relatively new and fun, how the characters were incredibly well written and actually made choices that made sense to their lore.
    This time around, the story line is riddled with massive plotholes and goes for shock factor instead of good writing. While I think that trailers and marketing campaigns shouldn't spoil a game, there is a line where it goes from being anti-spoiler to flat out lying to trick fans into buying the game for false reasons, and Naughty Dog went over than line numerous times.
    Gameplay wise, it is exactly the same as the first one. That's not exactly a bad thing, if it ain't broke don't fix it, but it only worked in the first one because of the story, where every cutscene brought new and interesting plot development, why what you were doing and where you were made sense. This time around it is just tedious, side mission after side mission that aren't important, fighting the exact same enemies in the exact same way hundreds of times.

    TL;DR Don't buy it. Graphics good, game-play poor, storyline abysmal.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To preface this review/rant; It took me nearly two weeks of processing my feelings to decide where I stood on this game after completing it on June 21st. I would advise anyone reading these reviews to give no weight to reviews left on release date, June 19th. There's simply too much to unpack here, including finishing the game, which took me 23 hours altogether.

    Notice how the extremely negative reviews push buzzwords/terms, and don't mention much of anything coherent? It's not a coincidence. These reviews do not elaborate what "plot holes" exist, they do not elaborate on what makes the story poor, in their opinion. The people leaving these reviews are either experiencing grief over the death of Joel, and don't understand how to process it, or are internet trolls/bigots and are a waste of your time. More often than not, people get angry when they don't understand something that they cannot change.

    This game pushes the boundaries of what the medium can be, and it will go over the heads and hearts of those with a lack of emotional intelligence and an ability to look deeper than what is on the surface.

    I believe that this game is phenomenal, heartbreaking, complex, and challenges the player on an emotional level. While it wasn't the story that I personally wanted, due to an attachment over the characters from the first game, Part II tells a complicated and nuanced story that gets you personally invested from the early hours of playing. It takes away something you care deeply about, and then challenges you to overcome your anger and hatred, tying the player directly into the same struggle that Ellie endures.

    The game hits a very hard point halfway through that flips the script and has you play as Abby, the person responsible for your anger and pain. It's not comfortable, at all, but it is necessary for helping the player understand the bigger picture. It mirrors the journey and experiences that Joel had in the first game through Abby's decisions and journey involving Yara and Lev, showing that these characters are much more than just their actions. It shows that both Eliie and Abby and have the same motivations - to seek revenge on those who wronged them.

    I believe that most of the hate for this game comes down to Abby killing Joel. Ultimately, if players could accept Joel as an extremely flawed character and justify his actions (remember his decision from the first game to murder dozens of innocent people, including those working on trying to save the world from the cordyceps pandemic? Not to mention his past as a hunter...) to "rescue" Ellie for questionable personal reasons, they must also accept that Abby is just in her actions to avenge her father, the firefly surgeon who was murdered by Joel.

    My only critique is that I do feel the game almost had too much on it's plate. While maybe it wouldn't have been practical, I believe the story could have been told better by having players experience more with Abby before Joel's death.

    This game is a monument to the art of video games. its world is beautiful and horrifying. Its gameplay is immersive and intense. But most of all, its story is in a masterclass of its own in the medium. Complicated, nuanced, and challenging the player like very few in entertainment try to do, it sticks the landing and delivers a powerful message about vengeance, hatred, grief, and forgiveness.

This game was absolute trash with the story line, only thing enjoyable was the graphics, but because like many others I waited 7 years for a sequel, it gets a 0. Like many others, we had hopes of walking beside Joel for joyous moments in the apocalypse, no no. Instead, you get to see Joel die, play 12 HOURS as the villain, beat the **** out of Ellie, on top of that, this game really pushes the LGBTQ Agenda in your face constantly, as if the game itself is rotated around a Gay Apocalyptic World that plays out like Game of Thrones. Connections and relationships among characters and the "build up" of the plot with them has not been properly executed. Some of the flashbacks and old memories of Ellie has been written really well and they were the best moments of the game and some of the best ever moments written on screen. While the game-play and combat is good, not much new elements were introduced from previous game. No major game-play innovations. However graphics, animations and acting are great and some of the best you will ever see for a long time. Ending is an anticlimax and doesn't provide any sort of closure to either of the characters or the player. It shows us the dark side of humanity. The world does not revolve around Ellie and Joel this time. There are points in the story where I just thought is ridiculous, like Ellie coming back for Abby late in the game. When Tommy said before he's had enough, now, Tommy is keen on getting revenge even going as far as to guilt-tripping Ellie. I also thought that Scar/Seraphites was forced into the game.

Beyond the ludonarrative dissonance (because videogames) and the obvious political agenda (and which is perfectly fine for me, beyond the fact that they use a shallow use a trans character for the mere fact of being trans). It is the way that naughty dog builds to tell us a story the real problem of this game. Disrespectful treatment of the former main character, and the way that they erase the deep personality of Ellie, becoming a being just driven by revenge. The whole way through I was enthralled in this world and the gameplay was intuitive and engaging. I kept getting amazed and wanted to continue seeing where this game led. This revenge tale I feel is important as Ellie has taken on a lot of Joel’s traits and with how the game proceeds you see that she’s slowly becoming more comfortable with it, even going so far as to torture. At the same time though we see Ellie get affected by these actions and due to Ellie allowing herself to get consumed by this need for vengeance, she lost everything. I won’t lie I was sad with the ending but I felt it was a bold and important for the story. During the scene that divided fans, you could see Joel uncomfortable while Tommy was relaxed. You could see Abby's shock and disgust after she went through with the act that she had long awaited. Because she realized revenge doesn't fill any holes in your heart. Those that angry at the game chose to hate the game from that moment out. They never gave it a chance solely based on the fact that a main character died. The story being done in a non-linear fashion angered many, but just because one does not like it, doesn't mean its a bad story. The pacing with the non-linear story could have been done better, but overall it made the experience of Abby better.
    The game did exactly what it sought out to do and that was make the audience feel. Overall, the graphics, gameplay mechanics, action sequences, and the attention to detail that the Naughty Dog team labored over pushed the level of games in 2020.

Those who have not played this masterpiece do not despair! For the very reasonable price of 60 U.S dollars you too can experience the cultural zeitgeist that is forming around the heart of this games own citadel of dreams. Dreams that the gaming Omnissiah himself Godd Howard (blessed be thy graphix card) would be proud of. Gamers, rejoice, for our prayers have been answered, in this game we have something that hasn't touched our cynical Doritos be-speckled hearts in quite some time, what we have here, in essence, is Nirvana, in video game form. As our Holy Lord Gaben Newwell (hallowed be thy processing core) forewarned eons ago, there would come a game, a game so monumental it would shake the very foundations of Gamers faith, but low and behold that holiest of tests has been passed, Witcher be praised! 10/10 would recommend. Very good game! Thrilling, breathtaking graphics and great characters. A milestone in gaming. And for all the homophobic people here: Welcome to the year 2020. Deal with it!

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

    If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
