If they wanted to write a story about a generic revenge story, they could’ve created a new IP, but instead, they choose an easy way out and build on top a story that should’ve ended 7 years ago.

    - Poor boring gameplay
    - Flat characters
    - Bad scenario (with huge plot holes and endless coincidences)
    - Parasitising on TLOU Pt. 1

Graphic pure and beau, but this is a cinematic story, if narrative bad - this aspect doesn't matter. God bless this 3d-designers, crunches that u paid - cost nothing.

I want to point my middle finger deeply to ND, for delivering a game which destroyed one of the most loved and shared stories of the entire gaming industry.

Whenever I thought about Last of Us, what came to my mind was a beautiful delivered story about a man and a girl, who let me be part of their amazing story.

Ellie made Joel find a reason to love his life again, he found a reason to be alive, to live and find love .
This is what part 1 delivered.
    What did part 2 deliver?

Revenge, lots of revenge, and in the end they throw it away and tell you it's a part of "growing". That revenge brings nothing.

One guy tries to kill an innocent girl, he decides about life and death, and then another guy decides about this guys life and death. After that the daughters from both of them do the same again but in the end they decide to let it go, because they won't get their fathers back. And that route took us 35 hours of redundant fights against zombies, wolfs and scars, over and over.

    Gameplay 10/10
    Graphic 10/10
    Story -1000/10

Fu** Naughty Dog, you broke my heart and I will never forgive you. This game doesn't exist at all for me. The story endet with Part 1

The 4 points is because it's a technical masterpiece. Gameplay is pretty much the same with small improvements here and there but the graphics detail, the soundtrack, level design are fantastic. Kudos to the technical team here. You guys knocked it out of the park. Those 6 points are lost because the story and its writing is the most important aspect of TLOU and it has failed at just about every point here.

In short, technical masterpiece but story-driven game gets low score because of its horrendous, hamfisted story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was introduced to The Last of Us after the remastered release on the PS4 and it changed my gaming preferences to this day. When I completed that game I knew it was amazing, and felt the same way about the creative team at Naughty Dog. From there I went into the Uncharted series, and again, each title was a home run right up until the recent end, which left everyone feeling great.

Now I get the fact that TLOU is set in a much darker world, and that "happy endings" isn't what it is all about. As a big fan of The Walking Dead (which clearly Neil is as well based on how he stole from them) I get that sometimes, in order to keep it "real" we have to lose some of our favorites, however in this case it should have been Naughty Dogs team that had their heads on pikes for the decisions they came up with, that have alienated a huge part of their fan base.

They can try to twist the facts to meet their narrative all they like, but at the end of the day they completely **** the bed with this one. SPOILER WARNING

Killing Joel is essentially killing Daryl Dixon or Rick Grimes; you just don't do it. If you are going to, you had better do it right and for a reason that moves the story. When it comes to beloved characters like these, there has to be a level of respect shown as well. Naughty Dog did not do anything to justify Joel's death and at the end of the day it was more for shock value which, thanks to the spoilers, had none.

There are so many moments in the game where it can't get out of its own way that it would take too line to list them all. One of the biggest though was when we are playing as Abby. We have to get to a hospital to get meds to save a patient and after an hour long mission, we are successful, only to see the patient killed off in the next scene. WTF?!?! Why did you waste my time with that STUPID time consuming journey for absolutely NOTHING? Now you can argue that she used her last gasp to save Abby but still and all, that was a huge waste of time.

Not to be outdone, that leads us to the ending. Ellie, who for over 20 hours has been hunting Abby to avenge Joel, has Abby submerged under water, and as Abby is about to be drowned, Ellie lets her go instead. WHAT?!?!?!

Naughty Dog had my blind faith and trust due to their past track record; that is all gone now. This abomination should have been aborted and I'm surprised the box doesn't have a rainbow flag on it. I couldn't care less about their being gay characters in the game, but the idea that you are trying to argue for LGBTQ equality in the post apocalypse, where murder is legal in the absence of law enforcement, is hilariously bad!

"It can't be for nothing..." and yet, in the end, it all was.

    What an incredible game.

I've never felt such heightened emotion while playing a game that I'm quite literally screaming out due to stress, tension or fear, and my deep love for the characters causing me to cry. Neil Druckmann and the rest of the team at NaughtyDog really have mastered the art of modern video game-making.

They have accomplished something that is astonishing in today's overcrowded landscape of entertainment media, where it feels as though everything has been done before, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out among the infinite resources we can choose from in this golden age of content.

Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson return as Joel and Ellie, expertly portraying their respective characters in a performance that feels deep, rich and meaningful. Johnson, especially, really cranks it up a notch as an older Ellie, and I would go as far as to say Johnson is more talented her field than many popular actresses working in TV and Hollywood today.

I think it's a remarkable achievement to introduce new characters that aren't dry, annoying or just not really worth caring for. It's an all too common problem in film, TV or games that I think we've accepted as normal and to be expected when sequels and spinoffs are made. However, I did find myself happy to see Jesse, anticipating interactions between Dina and Ellie and found myself growing to like Abby despite outright hatred toward her to begin with, which is not an easy feat.

Everything in this game is oozing with genuine effort - nothing is lazy. The graphics, game play combat and above all the story is phenomenal. I'm blown away by what the team at NaughtyDog have been able to take from the first game, and improve and build upon it.
The story is what seems to be making or breaking this experience for many people. It upsets me to see so many negative reviews when the years of dedication, love and care to create this game is so starkly evident.
I really think that if you believe that the story was poor, you aren't understanding it in the slightest. You're missing the mark and failing to see the point completely.
Many of the critic reviews do an excellent job of illustrating this point. Go and read some of their reviews.

To give this game anything between a 0 and a 4 is downright wrong, because even if one did understand the story, and it truly wasn't for them, then fair enough - but you can't deny that everything else that makes up this game was near perfect.

I'm also terribly disappointed in those reviews that stated the reason they were giving the game a bad score was because they were having 'politically correct, feminist propaganda' shoved down their throats. How will we ever have LGBT+ and/or strong female leads represented in anything if angry bigots shoot it down in the first instance, complaining that they have to see someone different to them on their TV screen? It's actually disgusting to see in the year 2020 just how many people are still stuck in the past.

I know this phrase 'subverted my expectations' is so overused and practically a joke but it really did just that. I was always on my toes, unable to predict what was going to be throw at me next. I had a phenomenal experience all throughout the game, but somehow the last few hours just elevated the entire game 10-fold, wrapping it up so fantastically. I teared up a lot.

I wouldn't be able to say whether ''Part I is better then Part II'' or vice versa, because they both have completely different feels to them that it becomes impossible to compare the two. I think the change in mood is down to the nature of the respective stories. Part I is about (fatherly/daughterly) love, but toward the very end it becomes what the second instalment is about - the (arguably horrid and wrong) things you do for someone you love unconditionally.

I think you could choose to interpret that change in feel as a positive or negative, personally, I think it's a good thing. It needs to have a point of differentiation, something that lets everyone know it isn't it's predecessor. Or else, we end up experiencing something that feels like a cut and paste of the first one, with a few things jumbled around which happens far too often in the entertainment industry because it's safe and profitable. I think it's incredibly brave and commendable for NaughtyDog not to rely on the success of the first instalment, and it definitely pays off.

The Last Of Us Part II is a worthy continuation of a modern classic, and passes the game from being Joel's to Ellie's story of survival and love smoothly, even though they are beautifully and heavily intertwined with each other.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only good part of the game is graphics, so big thumbs up to the graphics team, you are the only reason I'm giving the game any points... And by the way, I'm sick and tired of people saying "You need to grow up" or "You're not intelligent enough to understand the meaning of the game"... These are the only things fan boys can bring up against negative critics, and actually they are the ones that just simply can't accept the fact that the game is full of mistakes, on almost every level. Don't get me wrong, I am a big Naughty Dog fan, I LOVE the Uncharted series too, and I absolutely loved the first episode of the Last of Us, and it's always going to be one of my favourite games, but at this point I just wish Part 2 was never even made. But then again, this is only MY OPINION, if there are people that actually like it, I'm honestly happy for it and wish them a lot of fun playing it, but as for me I will just pretend that there is only one Last of Us game.

Edit: After submitting it I realized that this is not a "proper" review where I say my opinion on the game and mention the things I didn't like and why didin't I like them, but everything that I could say about it was already written by about 70% of the negative reviews on this page, but here is a quick going through: I understand, that this is not a "typical fun" game, where everyone survives and the game ends with a happy ending, and at some point I even like it, it just makes it even more realistic. (Now, if you are going to keep reading, you'll run into some spoilers, so if you don't want anything spoiled, click away!).

I think it's safe to say that Joel was almost everyone's favourite (or second favourite, after Ellie) character. At some point I even understand why they killed him, because this is the "motivation" for Ellie to go on a revenge mission. But what's bothering me is that they did it in such a disrespectful way, and also in like the first hour of the game (or second, depending on how fast you play it). But let's just say that even this can be understandable (not for me though). After this, at a certain point in the game, you have to play with Abby... Even if you somehow can manage to gather the strength to continue playing the game, you are most likely going to do so with absolutely no fun. I know it was said that "this game is not about fun", but there shouldn't even be parts that players absolutely hate, there is a big difference in those two things. Even if they made an explanation about Abby's story, to make it understandable why she did what she did, most players won't really care, because they will look at her with hatred and will have absolutely no fun playing with her nor any willing to learn how to like her character. And just the whole story, about Ellie going through hundreds of men and women, killing all of them just so that she can get to Abby, and then in the end when she could take her revenge she actually leaves her alive, it just makes the whole game pointless, because everything you did, everything Ellie end everyone else has lost was for absolutely nothing.

Again, this is only MY OPINION, You don't have to feel the same way, as a matter of fact, if you feel otherwise, I'm genuinely happy, but don't start with all that "You don't like the Last of Us Part 2, so you must be an idiot, who is not mature or intelligent enough to understand the story" or the "You only say bad things about it because that's what everyone else does".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This does not feel like a true sequel to the first game. They took characters that felt real and that people loved like they knew them personally and killed them like there is no tomorrow, make their motivations make no sense, as well as introducing new characters that are either hollow or infuriating. It is sad that the story is simply so wretched too, because there was obviously a lot of great effort put in by a lot of great artists here. Many of the levels are intense and fun to play through. The environments are great. The graphics are top-notch. We even get one exception to the terrible new characters, as Dina is quite a joy to be around.

Ultimately what kills this game can be attributed almost exclusively to Abby, and everything that revolves around her. She is an irredeemable character, killing a character that was beloved by millions, even wanting to kill a pregnant woman out of vengeance, knowing that she was pregnant. Aside from being pure evil, she is not very interesting, as when they do try to make show her light side, she is simply bland. The writing relies far too much on her backstory to try to give her character instead of actually giving her a real character. And this would not be so much of an issue if we did not have to play as her through a third of the game.

Given the muddled and confused moral, and the equally confusing narrative structure and pacing, we are left with an experience that feels not only incomplete, but ultimately leaves us in a dark, depressed state. One of the best words to describe this feeling is probably "robbed". I feel robbed of the characters I fell in love with. I feel robbed of the true sequel that the first game deserved. I feel robbed of the mood that the first game left me with, which was not one of pessimism, but of "endure and survive". With the feeling this game gives, I don't know what is there to fight for anymore.

But Eille is better in stealth. DONT Judge Or Make any Negative Things about the game. Because you did not complete this game Plan and Simple.

Naughty Dog did an amazing Job. If you want survival action game, well this is the game for you and if you play the 1st last of us, this last of us part 2 is twice as good.

Again this game is worth the wait and its the Best game to close out the exclusive for PS4 Period.

I don't want to play as the one who killed him, at least not in that way. All that comes after, when you are forced to play as Abby, is a shallow attempt to force me with a character I don't like.
If the game made me first play as Abby, and then she reveals to be the one who is going to kill Joel, then it would have been WAY better.
That's a shame, because the gameplay part and most of all, the graphics are really good.

A potentially unique and visceral story unfortunately executed slightly poorly with brave narrative choices falling short of their desired effect. Lots of subverting expectations and shocking imagery to raise the players heart rate and create despair. Unfortunately this method of storytelling while having an immediate and extreme reactionary affect on the audience will inevitably fail to move anyone in any meaningful or lasting way. Thus while there are some truly stunning moments it fails to achieve the lasting impression that part 1 did. While it is understood that part 2 is trying to achieve different things. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game's story looks as if it was made in the months in which the game was delayed. Let's start with the reasond behind my rating. I give it a 1 because the graphics are amazing but I would rather play the first one with minecraft graphics than this one any time. The story gets a 0. You would think in 2020 writers would get past plot armor and clichés. Not only is the story bad, it also doesn't make sense. In the first game Tommy almost doesn't lets his own brother enter Jackson and in this game he just goes "Yeah, down the hill, come with us, restock.. might as well tell you our patrol schedules. This is Joel. In case you are wondering he used to smuggle things and oh yeah, years ago the fireflies were about to kill his daughter so he killed them first. I am telling you this because there are millions of Joel in America. Wouldn't want to kill the wrong one". Same thing goes for Joel, reluctant to help 'injured' guy on the road but somehow trusts a random girl the same size as he is...
Also, knowing their past as hunters and the fact that Joel literally killed a hospital full of fireflies they shouldn't openly say their names to random people and in the middle of a huge group of them while being alone and outnumbered...
When Ellie opens the door and sees Abby beat Joel, she could easily shoot her but no let's look at her and go in without checking the room or anything.. as if Joel and Tommy could be taken out by a single random woman..
The entire story should not take place. You would expect mistakes from beginners but not people who survived in a post apocaliptic world for years and learned their lessons. Aside from the plot holes, the characters just aren't interesting. When Abby killed Jesse I was just 'wow' but could not care less. Same would have been the case with Dina. There is no emotion. Abby's story does not make you like her no matter how many dogs she pets. "She changes wow bla bla" yeah well, Ellie to Abby "she is pregnant... Abby-GOOD".
Trust me when I tell you that I liked the Joel and Ellie flashbacks more than I did playing as Abby but those kinda don't fit in the way the story is told.

    Everyone is horrible.

That’s the world you want me to play in Druckmann?
    No thanks.
I find good things in my world, and I don’t want to be in the headspace of ANYONE in yours.

This game is straight up not enjoyable, at all.
I don’t care what your message is, and maybe you’ll get a lot of other people to sit through this torture chamber, but not me.

I am 100% fine with women characters. Horizon had a strong wonderful woman character who was a joy to play. I don’t care in the least that Ellie is gay, but none of this game makes any sense at all. The characters simply make me cringe. Ellie is hateful. She’s horrible and I don’t like her. I don’t want to be near her and that’s a real problem since I am forced to be her in the game.

How can you make a game with a central character who is SO unlikable?

    Really Naught Dog?
    The game makes me cringe.

It’s sad to me that naughty dog actually thought that this is what fans wanted. I do not know what is going on in this country, but I don’t want to be a part of the same nation as these sort of people anymore. I’ve just totally had it with them pushing their ideals down my throat endlessly, demanding I relate to them.

    I don’t.
    I won’t.
I don’t care if you ever make games for “me” again. I don’t need to spend my money with you, it’s fine. I truly don’t care at all.

There are other things to do. I don’t need this.

TLOU was one of my all time favorite games. It was heartbreaking. It was beautiful, and it truly had love written all over it.

TLOU2 is an absolute train wreck of SJW meets too high expectations for me. I am in shock that this is the game that naughty dog thought fans wanted.

Either that, or (more likely) naughty dog does not care what fans want. They used all of us who loved TLOU by taking a platform we all loved... and turning it into a nonstop lecture on the evils of white men.

    Oh, how brave.
    How daring.

    How boring.

    This game is being sold.
I couldn’t play more than 3 hours of it... and I honestly disliked every minute of it. Congratulations on that naughty dog.

By the way, I thought Control was awesome.
Female lead, was awesome, great game.

    I’m 100% done with anything like TLOU2.
Feel free to replace me and my dollars with anyone else, Druckmann.

I thought id try out this game despite its controversy. I went in with an open mind and tried to dismiss what was being shoved down my throat. Thats all I really care to say. Descent game, but Ill probably get it refunded. Im sure my score wouldve been slightly higher if they added multiplayer like the first game.

Why is Metacritic keeping this POS in the top spot on the new and notable for MONTHS now? The story is an abomination of cultural Marxism. The graphics are descent. The gameplay is nearly a clone of the old one so still descent. Metacritic I don't know what they are paying you but you need to get this off of your front page. You r credibility is going to zero.

Honestly the absolute worst story of any game I have ever seen. The writer had a clear agenda and purpose he wanted to tell with his game and it was garbage. Absolutley no redeeming it. Ellie was NEVER the reason for the success of The Last of Us. It was ALWAYS Joel. The fact that Druckman didnt understand this is why the game falls flat on its face from the very beginning. Expand

TLOU 1 was one of the best games I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It was beautiful. This sequel is like someone took that beautiful thing and smashed it repeatedly in the head with a golf club, and then spat on it.

The problem is not what happened in the story, the problem is the way it was written in is just simply bad writing, and is not worthy of the name.

Neil Druckmann couldn't write a shopping list let alone a game. Gameplay and graphics are okay, but the story itself ruins the game.

I still recommend to pick it up. if you're hesitate then wait for a sale.

Let's start, the graphics are amazing, the gameplay is a huge step up (especially for melee and stealth), and the story is fantastic. A lot of people whining about the story are either upset about the LGBTQ+ aspects or they read spoilers with no context and were left enraged before playing the game. The Last of Us 2 is not the sequel I expected, but it is one that is true to its world and characters. The first game shows a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to get his job done, contrary to what Polygon thinks, the game is not about selfless actions or anything remotely about altruism. Joel has a mission, he became attached, and then he literally doomed the entire **** population because he didn't want to lose a daughter figure again. It is understandable, but also, if you came out not thinking Joel is a selfish man (albeit relatable) person, you didn't absorb the story properly and this game likely isn't for you as you entirely missed the point of the first one. Which you can see if you read Polygon's review, which honestly is an embarrassing review because the reviewer just blasted out that she played a game and didn't understand it even remotely. I think the hardest part of this game (for some) is that it really asks you to be a decent human who is capable of complex emotions and hopes that you can place yourself in the shoes of others while things are unfolding. It essentially asks that you go in with one motive and understand why you would possibly change that as events unfold and apparently that is asking too much for some 40,000+ losers review bombing the game. If you enjoyed the first game, play this with an open mind and don't become so attached to your own expectations that you get upset when the creators don't adhere to your every specification. Expand

What the hell with gamers that criticize this game. It really a great single player game, better than resident evil 2 or 3 remake. I have a great time with it. Those gamers better go play their animal crossing, pokemon or online kiddie stuff.

It's a technical masterpiece with very good gameplay and a polarising story.
I think that the themes and atmosphere of this are very much aligned with and build off the original. It's not for everyone for sure. The Abby section dragged on just a couple of hours too long for me. Especially since we left it on such a cliffhanger before that...
It questions your loyalties and offers differing perspectives. Each character is flawed. Some more than others. But ultimately the game left me feeling dirty, conflicted, emotionally wrecked, with a touch of acceptance to wrap it up. Not quite as stellar as the first, but damn near close.

Really enjoyed this game. Dispite all the haters they couldn't be more wrong. If you liked the first, I doubt you will dislike the second. All i can say is if you have some unhealthy attachments to characters, or for some reason you cant stand a story that involve LGBT characters then i would say this game isn't for you.

After one week of playing, I’ve just completed The Last of Us: Part II. Emotionally wrecking. Naughty Dog has created another work of art that will go down as one of its best opera magna. Naughty Dog has created another work of art that will go down as one of its best opera magna. Granted, despite the huge efforts it doesn’t have an engaging story as the first game. The pacing is odd and even distracting at times. Time jumps aren’t always agreeable. But, in the end, it all comes together in a rather coherent manner. With new environments, new dynamics and new characters The Last of Us: Part II strives for a world which is more ambitious, relentless and immersive. This admirable effort (or, rather, the ideal) works to a large extent -though I'd wished some things would’ve not gone unexplored. The game mechanics, gameplay, atmosphere, graphics: not much to say on these areas other than perfect.

I might have a soft spot to lean more on the weaknesses in comparison to the game’s strengths (which is a lot). However, there is no doubt that The Last of Us: Part II is a rare gem. Don’t look at the abnormally bad reviews and scores. This is GOTY material right here. Taking only half a point off on account of the story, I am giving it a solid 9.5.

This game is near perfect in every way. Don't listen to the haters. Most of them lack the emotional and/or intellectual depth to fully understand the game. The people I know personally who were disappointed by the story or the structure rate it 7 or 8 out of 10. This is not a 1-star game by any measure.

Even after all of the negativity surrounding the game, I started playing my friends copy and thought it was ok for the most part, until you hit a point where the whole game changes. I actually got angry at the game and stopped playing. The graphics were great, but that simply can't save this game.

In the technical aspect, the game is overwhelming: incredible graphics, excellent environmental design, God-tier animation, shot composition and overall scene direction, however the game is dragged out and over stays it's welcome, and the overall gameplay loop is mediocre at best, barely an upgrade from a game 7 years ago, hence feeling like the game belongs in the previous generation when it comes to being played instead of being watched. Beyond the technical aspects, the game's story pretty much deconstructs it's former narrative peak in character writing, and by the end of the game the story lead nowhere and pretty much undid every achievement part 1 managed to reach. This is the most disappointing aspect of part 2, and left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Incredible technicals, mediocre gameplay and bad writing. How this game managed to get such a very high score in the "Profesional reviews" when it clearly has so many issues is beyond me.

For me it's a cautionary tale that our mistakes can come back to haunt us; that no matter how much we correct our ways, some will focus on that terrible mistake, so be ready for the consequences.

And at the risk of sounding preachy, that instead of letting our future selves be defined by our mistakes we should strive to be better regardless.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
