As an avid fan of Naughty Dog earlier releases, despite the leaks I was still hoping that no matter what's in the leaks, this game is still going to be something special. After all there is no other studio that can tell story the way ND does, right?

I'm probably one of many people that during the game came to conclusion that creators wanted you to suffer. They drag you though horrendous, emotionally draining gaming experience. Game is designed to make you miserable and there were moments when I was considering just quitting it.

Beloved characters from part one are nowhere to be found. Joel is an old, sad, beaten dog full of guilt. Ellie is completely different person that treats Joel like a dog. There is a cast of new completely irrelevant, forgettable characters that I could not care less about. Story is full of inconsistencies and plot holes. Writing can only be compared to what those two clowns did to GOT season 8.
Let's not forget super important sex scene that was so crucial to find it's way into this game.Scene that was so gross I could not watch it. Dude f*****g dude named Abby with herculean body and semi female face.

Druckmann managed to destroy everything that fans loved from part one, leaving me devastated and heart broken. He killed Joel, forced me to play half of the game as his killer trying to convince me that I should like that character. Story does not provide any profound message just a mess of unfinished plots, irrational decisions.
I was left with the feeling of confusion and emptiness after watching with bleeding heart final moments of a biggest looser of the story, emotionally and physically devastated girl named Ellie.

I cannot comprehend what was Druckmanns motivation to destroy something so beautiful and unique that was enjoyed and loved by millions of fans around the world. To make fans suffer to intentionally cause them pain. I would like to unsee it unplay it , pretend that it never happened.

I feel sorry for developers, programmers, artists etc who put so much work and heart to make this game look like it is. Visually this game is stunning. As a story driven game none of this efforts could save it unfortunately.

Ignore all others discounting this because of" Shock value" or "being woke" if you played the first game it starts with your daughter dying and Ellie accepting being Gay in a **** up apocalyptic world. Nothing in that aspect has changed so it acknowledges the first game in that aspect. If your afraid of gay characters this is not the game for you and you should have bigger problems with people being people. Love the game for the relatable story in those circumstances and have a great time. 10/10 Expand

All those who give the game a minimum rating, half did not go through the plot to the end, and the other half did not buy the game at all. Personally, I am delighted with the game. Of course, the sequel is no better than the first part, but he definitely does not deserve all the negativity that hit him.

Having grown so found of Joel and Ellie, watching Joel go through heart ache, survive an apocalypse, grow hardened to the world. But then get a second chance with Ellie was amazing. I waited patiently for the follow up. Staying spoiler free despite the odds stacked against me. Saying that I am disappointed, angry, confused and broken with the Last of us part 2 is an understatement! I just don’t get it?? How can you mess up a winning formula that was pretty much guaranteed to sell and do well. Last of Us part 2

Graphics are amazing - TBF i expect nothing less from a AAA title in 2020!

Gameplay mechanics are good but pretty much the same as the first with some improvements - going prone, climbing and dodging but that’s about it.

Story is disgusting! Treatment of Joel, not just killing him but making him die in the most painful, brutal way possible and then literally spitting on his dead body??? Just not acceptable however you try and slice it.

Ellie is this mean and a not so likeable character all of a sudden?? Must be the fact that she has lived in relative safety with her own home, surrounded by loved ones, friends and community for the last 4 years?? We have hardly any scenes of Joel and Ellie one museum flashback which is really nice. But that’s it, every other scene between them she is just horrible to him. Newsflash NaughtyDog, practically everyone of us doesn’t think what Joel did at the end of Last of Us was that big a deal!?!! I think every father would have done the same in a flash!?! I think any daughter or other human would understand why he choose not to let her die. Making us play for so long as the character who kills Joel has to be the biggest mistake ever made in gaming history. She is shoved down your throat in this linear story. You just have to grit your teeth and try and get through. Even forces you to beat Ellie to a pulp at one stage and fight Tommy. Everything I am told about Abby still doesn’t make me like her. Her father is not very likeable, her redemption with two random kids doesnt make any sense. They saved her life she says over and over again, well so did Joel didn’t make a difference then!?!?! No she still brutalised him, not even on he saved my life I’ll make it quick!!! Even the kids who are supposed to be why we should like her are a bit annoying. Lev basically runs off and gets his mother and sister killed after you have just spent 2 hours trying to save the same sister.

Ellie kills like 1000 people trying to get to Abby and then when you finally get your hands on her right at the end and think you’ll get a pay off and some redemption. She decides killing is bad and she’s not worth it. In this mission of pointless revenge Ellie loses everyone and everything she ever had. No Joel, no Tommy, no Dina, can’t go back to Jackson. Just left alone, wondering the wilderness and then the game finishes!

Shame on you NaugtyDog, you always had my money regardless, I’d buy your products day 1 without even thinking about it, not anymore!

This game was beautifully detailed and actually quite fun to play, but i, as I'm sure thousands of other fans, came for their story which was a total let down and very forced. I'm so disappointed in Neil Druckmann as all through the promotion it was all Joel and Ellie, there was little to no promotion of any new playable characters. I felt that there should have been another game inbetween this where you play as just Abby, then have this game as the third, minus the choppy time line. I didn't have a problem with Joel dying, however, i felt Joel was used so much in promotion compared to game time that they slightly conned the public, no I don't feel entitled in any way but as a die hard fan, who has invested so much time and money into this franchise, i can't help feel totally let down by this great company. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

    Decepcionado!

    GAMEPLAY

The gameplay is similar to the first game, but it contains reinventions and a few changes. Such as: The dodge and the jump. The weapon upgrade system is much more satisfying than it's predecessor. With a wide arrange of weapons, upgrading each and every single one of them, change not only the aesthetic but the way you play it. The jump button is very important to the level design of the game, since now, you have a traversal option to approach the enemies. I found the dodge thoroughly entertaining, it adds to the frenetic and fast paced combat of the game.

    PACE

The pacing of the game is adequate. It fits into the story, and it shows how Naughty Dog has grown in this particular aspect. Since previous games of the company had some pacing issues such as Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us. I'm really happy to see that Naughty Dog made her homework.

    ENVIRONMENT

Naughty Dog's level design was always very inspired. In this game, it reaches a whole other level. Non linear sequences add to the feel of the post apocalyptic world of the game and also reward the ones who explore. With collectibles and unique sequences that add to the overall meaning of the story. Seattle, the city where you play most of the game only proves that Naughty Dog is amazing in it's art direction.

    STORY

The story of The Last of Us Part II is Amazing. It follows Ellie in a quest for revenge and Abby (the new character) in a quest for redemption. The narrative talks about a lot of different themes. Such as: Empathy, Hate, Love, Legacy, Redemption, Sacrifice... the list goes on. Nothing in this game happens for free. Everything has a meaning or meanings. It's really about deconstructing the characters we know.

    PERFORMANCES

Ashley Johnson kills as Ellie, giving a career defining performance that is sure to change acting in videogame forever. Laura Bailey is the star of the game, she carries Abby's character arc forward and made me love the character even more than I thought I would. Troy Baker destroys as the intimidating but charming Joel.

The Last of Us Part II is a sequel made in spectacular fashion that not only respects the story of the first game while also adds to it.

PS: I experienced some bugs while playing the game. But nothing that destroyed the experience.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that the graphics are outstanding (and so is the acting, for that matter). The gameplay is arguably better than the first even if that leaves some elements still to be desired.

Last of Us, however, is really about the story and it's the storytelling where everything falls apart in the sequel. I made excuse after excuse to myself while playing in a desperate attempt to love Last of Us 2 but there are critical plot holes surrounding key events that you really need to buy into. Worst of all, these could have easily been written much more convincingly without changing the quite controversial plot that likely would have gotten more players to appreciate the game.

The roughly 25 hour journey is mostly unpleasant, depressing, and decidedly not enjoyable. It seems like some people were moved by the moral but for many that point was obvious and insultingly clear from the start without giving the player any agency in what choices were made or how they played out. Last of Us 2 dragged everything I loved about the first game down with it, kicking and screaming. The story was needlessly clumsy and it's the player who pays in spades for this failure.

I wish I had never played this game, and for what little was done very well there is an ocean of failures that have me never wanting to revisit any game in this franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you don't end up moved, truly hurt by this story, you haven't played it the way you should have. Every person that end up hating the game, saying it ruined the legacy of the last of us, makes it even more logical that this game is a pure success. The level of storytelling here is above anything ever done before. ND went all the way, without a flinch. They knew the user reviews will be divided. ND made it that way, by going through this hurtful story, you end up learning that Joel, our beloved Joel and all the **** up **** he did in his past, he had to pay for it. The payment is salty af, but Joel knew it. He lived as long as he could with his burden and remorse, even if as he said, " if somehow, the lord gave me a second chance, I'll do it all over again." The love he carried and still carry for his "adopted" daughter, Ellie, is the reason why he did all these things to the fireflies, we all know that, for those of us who've played the last of us. But we had never seen all the damage Joel made by saving Ellie. In TLOU part 2, we get to see all the damages it did to the fireflies and how it destroyed the hope they had to make a cure and save humanity. Joel and his selfish choice doomed us. But because in the last of us, we're playing Joel, we don't get mad at this. we're some sort like "well **** the world, Ellie prevails on everyone!". In some way, we all end up acting as jerks against our own humanity. And the last of us part 2 slaps that reality into our face after 7 years of waiting, of being okay with that selfish choice. 7 years of preparation to put us back in our place and to teach us that life isn't fancy even in a game, that our actions always have consequences and we all have personal responsibilities for them.
The magnificent overlay of Abby and Ellie's time line in Seattle creates a deep realism, as we flow and end up fighting against Ellie, as being Abby. As a game of the mouse and the cat. except we're playing both hunter.
ND went deeply into characters story realism and into Ellie's trauma, providing us some of the best representation of a feeling, the loss.
The whole game play is articulated around the loss, the wound that it left, the denial and the anger then the acceptance, letting go all the pain, to be left with a void to be filled. All this, not clearly showed, but it is all this story is about. Acceptance of the loss, and getting over the trauma. We all lost a loved one, Joel was a pillar to us, and his death as some of you though, was like a bus hitting us right in the face.
To avenge Joel, Ellie lost everything. She lost and best friend, Jesse, she lost her love, Dina and JJ, and she lost the ability to play guitar, a skill she learned through Joel, a bond she lost the moment Abby bite her fingers. But the last picture from the window with the moth carved in the guitar and Ellie walking away in the background, without looking back, is a blurry way to show us she keeps on going. Everything that happened, is over now. We'll see what's next in a maybe part 3.

#1 This game is being “unfairly” downvoted by people who didn’t even play the game. I say this because it became apparent that this game was review bombed less than 12 hours after the game was released FYI (you need at least 20 hours to finish the game). The downvoted reviews were mainly due to the backlash caused by a few cutscenes that were “leaked” before the release of the game.

#2 Other people are review bombing the game because they don’t agree with the game’s story and narrative choices. In my opinion it’s completely unfair to review a game “solely” based on the the narrative choices of the game creative director. Other major factors should be examined Ana analysed before coming to any conclusions.

    And now to the review:

    The Last Of Us 2 8.0 / 10

    Pros (+)

    - Amazing Graphics : I can undoubtedly say that this game is the best looking PlayStation 4 game so far.

    - Solid Gameplay: The gameplay has been significantly expanded on with new mechanics , weapons, and tools at your disposal - Highly Polished Game : I didn’t encounter any bugs or glitches in the 25+ hours of playing the game. The game also ran at a steady 30 FPS with no noticeable frame drops.

    - New unique Factions with their own story, beliefs , ideas , and personal struggles - The game feels more open and less linear compared to the first game with more sandbox like environments in the world.

    - The Environmental story telling in this game is the best so far in the entire industry. Every building , house , and room feel lived in and has a story to tell.

    - Gustavo Santaolalla does a wonderful job as the game’s soundtrack composer. The soundtrack this time around can be considered at the same level , if not better than the first game. - The writers take a massive risk with their bold attempt at exploring very dark and vengeful themes. I personally think that the overall theme of the game helped to distinguish TLOU2 from the first game. —————————————————————

Cons (-) - The pacing of the story felt unorganised and in some cases annoying. It’s very clear that some parts of the story felt very unreasonable and unnatural compared to the first game. - Too many new characters were Introduced (10 new characters or more) and unfortunately some of them were either un-memorable or weren’t given enough screen time. It’s also clear that some characters didn’t get the character development that they deserved. This is expected when you introduce too many new characters that lack proper character development due to time constraints.

    - The game felt too long , I think the game could’ve been fine if it was as long as the first one instead of stretching the game into the 20-30 hours territory. ————————————————————-

Verdict: 8/10 I personally believe that this game would’ve gotten a 9 or 10 if the storytelling was re-arranged in a more chronological manner similar to the the first game. I also believe that game’s overall experience could’ve been significantly enhanced if some characters were better written and had a longer screen time.

This game , as the media describes it , is a “Flawed Masterpiece” and I think this term appropriately describes what TLOU2 really is.

I personally think you should play this game , even if you don’t agree with its themes and narrative, it’s still worth your time.

Replace Ellie with Nathan on those parts and there you go. All the relationship drama is a snooze fest. The game mechanics for 5 years in the making are a let down. The first Last of Us was great as it seemed to have much more of an intense survival aspect and not knowing whats coming next.. Being that this whole game is about revenge on actual people and not the "infected" totally felt like a 180 for me and makes the story line less in suspense. Yes there are parts with the infected you must survive from, but if you are looking for that same feel as the first one...good luck. Honestly the best parts of the game are the movie/cut scenes. Whenever i start playing a new game that i really want to enjoy i hope that i don't finish it too soon. This game wants me to get through it as quick as possible and then delete it off my system. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was a phenomenal follow-up to its outstanding predecessor. Don’t believe all the hate and controversy surrounding it. To receive the full effect of the story you have to play through the entire thing for yourself. The people who hate Abby and are complaining about playing as her have either not played the game enough or at all and/or are too tunnel-visioned to accept it. The game shows you Abby’s motivations for killing Joel, and even though I’m not happy he’s dead, I totally understand it. Abby wanted to take revenge on her father’s killer just as Ellie is doing. Abby and Ellie actually have more in common than meets the eye. They both have extremely similar motives. In contrast with most people, I actually grew to like Abby just as much as Ellie. They show that she’s not just a brute-like monster that killed one of the most beloved video game characters of all time. They give her depth and characterize and in doing so, bring to life a new beloved character. They also show how she grows as person and sets aside the ruthless killer she once was. People are complaining because they can’t and won’t understand the complex story Naughty Dog is trying to tell. They are showing that Joel and Ellie are villains from one perspective, while they are seen as heroes from another. The same goes for Abby. No one is totally innocent, and no one is entirely a villain. Things are not merely black and white like you see in many games. I honestly thought the story was much more complex and interesting than the first one. You are introduced to many more perspectives and motivations and characters who are as complex as they are interesting. Of course the gameplay and graphics were amazing as well (though that shouldn’t have to be said about a Naughty Dog game). Nothing huge has changed gameplay-wise from the first game, they’ve changed it up enough to feel fresh like the addition of the jump button. Overall, this is a game that has to be played from start to finish to get the full effect. Do NOT listen to hate from the internet. This game MUST be played start to finish period. If you’re willing to give it a chance then you’ll see Naughty Dog has yet again created something very special in The Last of Us Part II. Expand

It was a shock. When Joel got killed I was left staring at my screen, controller on the floor. Halfway through the game I get to play as Abby(the killer). I didn't like the idea. I didn't wanna play as her.
10 hours later, seeing the world of the game through her eyes, I was surprised that not only she grew on me, but I got to root for her! That's a story we'll made for me. I get it that's not for everyone. I get that some fans will hate it. But yes, you are allowed to not like the story of the game! And trust me I am a fan of the first one, and the Left Behind DLC. I loved Joel. I loved his relationship with Ellie. It did brought tears to my eyes. During the first game, during Joel's murder and during the flashbacks. I don't know if I can forgive Abby. But I'm willing to try.
Story wise aside(which I personally loved), the gameplay is awesome. It's an improvement of the first game. I don't get all the negative reviews calling it **** gameplay wise, because its like TLOU but better. And no matter howuch I love the first one, I'm not sure that another road trip with Ellie and Joel is what the series needed. That story was told. That story made us cry and get attached to characters. And now it s time for a new story. That(personally made me cry again and get attached to new characters), might not be for anyone I get that but oh well. That's my 2p.For those who hate the game, fair play. For those who loved it, I get you! For those who haven't played it, give it a chance and judge by yourself!

Great mechanics, compelling story, innovative narrative structure (at least in the videogame ganra), and most of all grounded in real life feelings.

It might not have been the perfect execution the community was expecting, but it is truly worth your wile. Although the ending is divisive, I applaud the story directors for sticking to it and giving us something we were not expecting.

For every con: awkward pacing intervals, somewhat repetitive gameplay towards the end, stressful scenarios for the casual player, the developers have managed to give us plenty of pros like: more options in the skill tree, beautiful animated cut scenes, and combat animations that look more like a cut scene rather than gameplay, and finally great accessibility toggles.

Secondly, it shines a light on the unbelievable lack of empathy in our modern lives. People are just so unwilling to see the world from someone else's perspective that they're prepared to send death threats to actors who portray characters in a story. Shame on them.

Naughty Dog's storytelling in this game is just beyond anything I've ever played, and being a part of it makes it so much more connected than any film or a book. The emotion this story brings out in people (positive and negative) is so intense and raw that it leaves a huge mark. I don't know what more there is to ask from a piece of entertainment. This is the absolute pinnacle of gaming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the gameplay and loved the graphics and the attention to detail in the environment; props to the developmental team for those.

The story though. The story left a lot to be desired, with inconsistencies, Battle of Winterfell level plot armor, and just some bad writing in general. I was okay with the twist and Joel's death at first, even though the false advertising is kind of infuriating. Ellie's 3 days in Seattle; I loved. I stayed away from the leaks and went into the game blind and throughout those 3 days I was thinking, hey, why do people not like this? It's great!

And then came the part which totally turned the game on it's head for me. The ~10 hours playing as Abby. The entire game depends on whether you like and sympathize with Abby or not, and I personally did not. I couldn't care less about her friends, and didn't even flinch on seeing them die one by one. So many WLF characters introduced, literally none of them resonated with me. I mean I don't even remember half of their names, that's how little I cared about them. Probably the only emotion I showed was doing a little celebratory cheer when Tommy shot Manny. That was nice.

As the game went on, my dislike for Abby increased. I mean it's hard to like someone who takes joy in torture (Joel, the captured Seraphites at the WLF compound she wanted a few moments with) and sleeps with their pregnant friend's boyfriend. Yeah, definitely not endearing. For others like me who didn't like her, the 10 hours playing as her would have been absolutely torturous. I considered dropping the game around halfway through them. No one wants to play that long with an MC they hate.

And then the ending. By the time it rolled around I was already extremely disappointed with and tired of the game, and it did nothing to change my emotions. Probably made my opinion of the game worse, if anything.

Looking back on it, I cannot be more disappointed with the game that Naughty Dog put out. As a standalone, sure, it'd be a great game. But as a sequel to The Last of Us? Pretty bad. If they were insistent on putting Abby's part of the story across, there would have been much better ways to go about it.

If you greatly enjoyed the storytelling and development of the first game the same way I did, you probably won't like this game. I have finished this game in about 6 days since the release and I have had time to fully think about my feelings for this game.

Oh, and if your review has anything to do with a "political agenda", or "feminist propaganda", your review is already invalid. Don't bother.

I will get this out of the way and say that the gameplay and graphics are absolutely worthy of a good score, save for the fact that a LOT of the sequences are repetitive at worst. Many mechanics are improved upon and added in this game, making those sequences worthwhile. The photo mode is also fantastic, I recommend that you take as many screenshots as you can with photo mode and just play around with it.

This being said, the story is... not great. It tries to differentiate itself too much from the first game, which had a cliffhanger that basically begged for a continuation. There has been a feeling of disconnection to both the story and characters and nothing to really grasp at you emotionally or mentally as the first game did. Within the first 2 hours of this game, the entire relevancy and connection to its predecessor is completely severed due to a certain event, even if you are greatly involved with the supposed "plot" and what is told to be Ellie's end goal. This game is riddled with what I like to call cheap-outs, that try to get a "gotcha!" moment at you, but are really just surprising for a moment, then irrelevant in the next. There are certain parts that I do appreciate in the story. Ellie's interactions with the characters on her side of the story were something that felt actually good, feeling like the connections you make with other characters in the first game. Although I don't feel as if these characters are necessarily well-developed, I do appreciate that point of view from Ellie. Another aspect I greatly enjoyed, in which case is the best part of the game for me, were Ellie's sequences of flashbacks that told their own story. In my opinion, the story told by those sequences would have made a better plot, one that lovers of The Last of Us would have found more emotional distress and disparity with, in a good way. One that doesn't shatter its connection to the entire first game in a minute, but instead builds on its foundation.

The game also allows you to play the same story from another point of view, in an attempt to garner sympathy for a certain character. I will say that with my time of reflecting on this game, I have grown to like this character and the one that most of her journey is with. Yet even now, I've gained no sympathy for the character. It seemed like they got a small part of the first game (the ending hospital scene) and decided, "Oh hey! Let's make a second game entirely of this pointless death!" Moving on, many of the other characters in the "Wolves" group simply are either just unlikable or gone before you can even get to that point.

I've heard the point from critics that this game is not one you're supposed to enjoy or be happy with. I get it. It's riddled with tragedies. It's supposed to have a "deep meaning". But I say this wholeheartedly: I enjoy tragedies. I like games with tragic stories and endings. Stories that make you angry, upset, and empty. But at the end of this game, I genuinely felt none of those emotions, just disappointment. Plot devices that serve no purpose other than to be a way to move the story on (I'm looking at you, Tommy at my farm and random new group called Rattlers) and major events that don't feel major at all.

All in all, I don't want to say that this game is bad, but it's certainly not good. I say this considering it as a standalone game.
But it is not a standalone game. It is a sequel. So I am going to judge it as so. Considering this, I do not think that The Last of Us Part II is good. Sure, it ups the department of gameplay, but the main driver of The Last of Us is the story. And when you start lacking in the main focus, you have made a disappointing sequel. I wanted so bad to like this game and it hurts to write this, but this was a sequel that was just. Eh. Worth playing? Yes. Would I genuinely recommend it? No. This is my review that no one will read, thanks for your time.

They do that to perhaps make the game more challenging or perhaps to be "realistic"? B uh t if realism is what they are going for then I need to buy me the tape they use that fixes bats and pipes. I do however think ND designed a good game and the Developers are talented and if you like these types of games then it may be great. I just dont feel that way. I was bored and wanted more action. I dont care for 1st person shooters I enjoy 3rd person adventure games with plenty of action. This game did not deliver that for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game has amazing graphics and music but the story is all over the place. You can't kill the main character in the first 2 hours of the game by a character we don't even know about, at least do it right. The different character transitions is awful. The only good part in the game is the flashback with joel and ellie. The ending is horrible. Waste of 25 hours I'll never get back. Expand

So, it is very sad that this game got review-bombed to hell due to leaks that ranged from either totally false, misleading, and/or out of context. Many of these negative reviews were put up within hours of the game being released when it should have taken well over a day (without food or pee breaks) to even complete the game, let alone contemplate it enough to write a review. However, if you are still considering playing this game, don't let the negative user reviews mislead you. Understand that TLOU 2 is a dark and mature piece of fiction, but give it a chance. I'm not joking when I say I think this game is a masterpiece.

The gameplay doesn't change up a whole lot from what already worked in the original game, but it still adds some welcome new mechanics that give the player more freedom and choices. In addition, Naughty Dog has included a plethora of accessibility options so that pretty much anyone can enjoy the game. They've also put a technical marvel on display here! From the graphical fidelity, the motion capture, the incredible animation and acting, the riveting musical score, those hilariously realistic rope physics, and the terrific sound mixing, TLOU 2 does it all better than any previous Naughty Dog game. Actually, it does that all better than any game I've ever played! Not to mention it does it all at a very stable 30fps at 1080p or 1440p depending on your console.

The sense of atmosphere is also an incredible feat. In fact, there are many moments where the sense of dread and anxiety might be overwhelming for those not accustomed to such intense games. TLOU 2 mostly takes place in a harsh cordycep-infested Seattle, where most of the residents have only survived as long as they have by being ruthless and cruel, and for you to survive, this game will require you to be the same. These residents of Seattle have divided into factions and appear to be locked in an endless cycle of violence with one another. While not everyone within is ruthless and cruel, the ones that are often have more than enough determination and resources to do as they please, regardless of the consequences.

The pacing and editing here is also master-class and unique. There are a number of flashback sequences this game has to juggle, and each sequence involves different perspectives, characters, and years. Yet, each flashback arrives at the perfect moment in the story and avoids the pitfall of becoming messy and confusing. With each flashback, a new layer of the story will peel back and earlier story beats may now make more sense or have new depth added to them.

With all that said, let's talk about the story, the source of all the vitriol and controversy. In my opinion, the story here is vastly superior to the already excellent story of the original TLOU. It has more emotional impact, the characters have more depth, and the stakes are much higher and more personal. TLOU 2 is presented as a revenge story and while revenge is important since it is the fuel that drives our characters (to some seriously dark and disturbing places, I might add), it is reductive to claim the story is nothing more than: "Revenge Bad". TLOU 2 actually tackles many complicated themes such as love, grief, forgiveness, tribalism, individuality, humanity, and obsession. As I said earlier, the story is also edited in a very unique and interesting way that I believe only a video game could succeed at. Suffice it to say, the story will have you actively engaged and you will find yourself pushing forward, eager to learn more.

Well, for most of you anyways, and that's the true tragedy of all this. This game is releasing in one of the most divisive and toxic times in recent history. TLOU 2 includes powerful female leads and LGBTQ+ characters in its story and for some bigots that proved unacceptable. The most generous and forgiving explanation I have to explain the rest of the backlash is that the story simply wasn't what some people wanted. However, to say this game has a "bad story" is simply wrong. Objectively, the story of TLOU 2 is quite brilliant! Naughty Dog took much bigger risks here and they clearly had their minds made up on what kind of story they wanted to tell, and in my opinion they delivered. Yes, the story broke my heart at times and made me cry, but it also made me smile and laugh and instilled a sense of hope. I honestly couldn't tell you the last time a game affected me so! Sure, the story is dark and intense and that won't be to everyone's liking, and it may not be to yours, but after finishing it, you cannot say it was told poorly. I loved The Last of Us and I loved its sequel. If you played the first game and loved it, as long as you approach the sequel with an open mind, I'm sure you'll love it too.

Masterpiece. Of course graphics are unbelievable, better than 99,9% of games on PC, the gameplay is so enjoyable, I would very much love a secondary mode to fight against IA without story, just to play with this nice gameplay (I hope the multiplayer mode soon). And of course the story is so well built.
Good job Naughty Dog ! (See you next Uncharted ?)

TLOU 2 is the best example of a game that is more than just entertaining, it's a game that makes you think and stays in your memory for a long time. Which is in itself, something that few games in the triple A industry can do. And it is for the same reason that this game has been review-bombed, for the simple fact that only with a playthrough and the hatred we feel for the death of Joel, this game cannot be reviewed. You have to at least play and think for a long time to understand that this game is as good as its predecessor. The graphics, gameplay, soundtrack, and story (when you get it right) put together make TLOU 2 the best game I've played since TLOU 1. Expand

For real, you need to have a lot of maturity to be able to understand what is this game trying to tell. it isnt a game about revenge, put that in your mind. its a apocalyptic world that anyone have a heroic death or is a pyschopath. everyone haves loves and feelings, and you just cant be blind by the hate.

Cant deny this game looks amazing, combat is faultless and engrossing with the only floor which is very frustrating is the story. Poorly written, very complicated, the characters have no appeal and it feels like the writers forgot about the original. What a shame. Very very dissapinted. Naughty dog dropped the ball and have destroyed a franchise. So sad.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
