Expand

Another masterpiece. Just like the first game. The game looks amazing and plays wonderfully too. The violence is brutal and shows what a person would have to become just to survive in that hostile world. The exploration is fun and finding and reading notes are a great world building device.

Can you settle down having people who love you close to you and keep your inner demons on hold? Absolutely not. You have to deal with them - just like Elly who is forced to deal with her demon, pumped up, muscled Abby. See how the characters in the story evolve to reach the climax in sunny California. I highly recommend this game for anyone yearning for the good, thought-provoking story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay: The gameplay in the last of us part 2 is brutal, dirty and feels like you're fighting for you're life in every encounter. The AI is incredibly smart and can plan coordinated attacks on you as well as outflank you, when I was playing on survivor mode I felt forced to play aggressive as if I stayed in one spot enemies would quickly surround you. It is an immersive experience because of these mechanics as well as the horrific screams when you dismember an enemy or the cries of anger when you kill one of their friends. I recommend playing on survivor. 10/10

Graphics; Absolutely stellar, jaw dropping, and at times almost feels photorealistic. 10/10

Story: This aspect of the game is the most polarizing and controversial, and is the main reason of the negative reviews. The point of the game is not merely revenge is bad, as many players say it is, I'd like it to compare it too the final scene in "Come and See". In which the main character fueled by hate comes to understand that we are all victims of our environment, Abby is not inherently evil, the world she lives in forced her to be evil to survive, just like has happened in Ellies and Joels storylines, but as we play with Abby we see that she is not simply Joels killer, she is also a daughter to a murdered father, friend, lover and just as human as Ellie, she is a good person which had to make bad decisions. In other words its not the people who are evil it is the world they live in that turns evil into a virtue, almost a condition for surviving. When I understood this it was easier to slowly forgive Abby as each time we played as here we were seeing another layer of her, and by the end I actually enjoyed playing as Abby more than I enjoyed playing as Ellie. Whether you liked the game or not comes down to if you could forgive Abby or not, you're in the same boat as Ellie, so thats why I think whether to spare Abby or not should be up to the players, and not determined by the game, simply because a lot pop people could not forgive Abby, in my case I did and the decision Ellie made was coherent with my own, but a lot of people wanted Abby dead and just had to see their character forgive them. So in conclusion the story is a masterpiece if you can slowly forgive Abby thought the game. But naughty dog should have allowed you to decide. 8/10

I wen into the game with no spoilers, so I intend to spoil nothing in this review.
To tackle many people's biggest complaint: the story.
this is the one aspect that falls slightly short of TLOU, however the story is quite the opposite of the last of us, whilst the first game is about saving another this is about ending one. If you expected the stories to be the same then you should change that perspective right now. Through out the game you get to play as two characters; Ellie and Abby. Whilst Ellie's story is dim and full of hatred, driven by rage into making suicidal decisions, Abby's is fueled by love and mainly regret. This game brings a closer look at an already devastated world, it's about death and sorrow, the people within a torned world and how they live through it. Compared to the first game where you discover a torn world and how to live in it. So obviously this game is far different story wise. And personally I loved the story.
Gameplay is far more versatile in Part II, this ability to do so much more allows for a lot more fun. Whilst the combat is repetitive just like in the first game, the introduction of new tools be it a new ammo type, craft-able or weapon, increases your creative ways to murder. Overall I found the gameplay in this game a lot more fun than the first, especially a specific encounter which is possibly one of my favourite gaming moments.
The atmosphere of this game is impressive, the first one was so disturbed yet beautiful, and this game does a great job of reinstating that and improving it. To be honest, I thought I wouldn't be scared by this game (seeing as I'm already accustomed to the world) but there are so many tense moments that leave you fearing for your life. This game is a cinematic masterpiece, from beautiful sunsets to dark interior building to raging fires, if there is anything truly incredible about this game it is the visuals.
The music in this game is just as empty as the first, giving it the exact same feel. One lonely instrument. Seeing as guitar plays such a heavy role in this game every piece played on guitar is symbolic of (spoilers). Music always kicks in at the right time, to set a scene, to increase tension, it's so absorbing you don't even realise the music is even there, and thats why I think the sound design is amazing.

    Atmosphere: 10
I think this game is definitely worth playing

What I say in this review will be nothing much different than other creators and honest reviewers have stated. This game pissed me off, but i also thoroughly enjoyed playing it at the same time. The graphics are stunning, easily one of the best looking games from the ps4 with only a title like red dead 2 coming close. The game play, though nearly identical to the first game, was enjoyable for me. I loved the first game so much not only for it's incredible story and character development but I enjoyed the game play as well. It's simple, but fun. Repetitive, but never really got boring for me, I loved it. So the visuals and the game play were incredibly enjoyable for me. What ruined the game for me, and so many other people, was the abysmal storytelling. The premise of the story is not what i'm solely mad at either. It's the way and sequence they told the story that was laughable.
Killing Joel is something i feel could certainly be done, i almost expected it. But to do it so early, with no build up or setting of the story line, WHY? Playing as Abby as a unknown character didn't anger me at first because i thought they would interlace the story lines side by side so that we could build each character into the way we could care and love each of them. But the game brings you to a climax with the story of Ellie, making us hurt for her and HATE everyone that was a part of Joel's killing. I enjoyed the murder of each of Abby's friends, and I was hoping that a fight would entail to kill Abby right in the theater and end the game. But no, they throw you back to the beginning of the game and force you to grind though another 10-12 hours playing as the character you hate the most! I don't care about this person, I hate this person! I want her to die I don't care about her or her friends well being. Then they try to change her perception from being an **** by saving those kids. But it's far too little, far too late. They absolutely ruined the entire game with not only the forcing of Abby on you, but the way they do it as well. Then while you think they've salvaged up whatever ending they may have left with Ellie able to be happy with Dina and her child, they rope you into another few hours on a mission that only lengthens and ruins the story even more. Not only revoking you of the death you desire of Abby, but stealing any sort of happiness Ellie may have left. Leaving you feeling empty inside, the whole game feeling pointless. Just to wrap up I've seen some people upset at the fact that Ellie is gay and that the scar child is trans.
There are some little parts in the story that baffled me by it's unnecessary placement, but others i felt were warranted. I feel like Ellie being gay was a good idea, before the trailer came out I figured she would be anyhow. I don't mind the trans placement with the child. I feel like they should've maybe made him a bit older to give more certainty to his choice, but in the context of the story it makes sense. He and his sister became outcasts because of his choice, and that's what brings them to Abby and poses them against their own people and I thought it was interesting. The sex scene though, totally out of left field and unnecessary. It is only even a thing for a few minutes in the next scenes and I feel only put in to make the story seem even more adult. But to put that on top of characters I couldn't care less about, and towards the end of a story I only want to wrap up, it wasn't needed.
I give this game a 4 solely because of how much I enjoyed going through the mobs as Ellie, trying to get revenge for Joel. This game could've been so much better and after years of waiting it is an utter disappointment. At this point they should've just kept it alone with the first game, at least it left the story at a better place than this.

Combat, looting and crafting is as solid as the first. New enemies keep it fresh but still creepy. It's good to think how you will engage encounters trying to reserve resources but still win some brutal fights.

I don't know how it got so many negative reviews on day one as it is a pretty long game, must be a lot of speed runners about. I can see why some people might not like where the story went so I am not disregarding all the negative reviews but the day one reviews seem fishy. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When it comes to the actual experience of the game. It’s second to none. Amazing graphics and animations, superb mechanics, etc.
But when it comes to the storytelling, the writers have really dropped the ball on this one. I think they forgot what made us love the last of us. We loved the first game because it told a story of two lost individuals trying to survive and the journey that we went with them to finally witness that father-daughter bond that was so unique and yet so heartwarming.
By making us play with the main antagonist for several hours certainly didn’t help. Abby isn’t a likable character but that isn’t the problem, the problem is that the game tried to force us to like Abby by drawing parallels to Ellie and by sympathizing with Abby cause.
Another issue is the way that Joel was killed wasn’t the proper way to kill the main protagonist in the first game. (Btw I’m glad they didn’t do a happy ending to him otherwise it would be too boring and predictable)
There are many examples to how to kill off a main character in other movies, games, etc. and I think most of them are better than we saw in the game.
Beating Joel to death with barely any resistance at all is unlike Joel (the guy who fought through the world in the first game). Another issue is with Dina.
Dina’s personality seems perfect for Ellie as the supporter of a vengeful bit#h lol.
Yet the chemistry between both of them is off. Dina just doesn’t seem like the right one for Ellie and that becomes more apparent as you progress through the game. Dina is a tough, peaceful family woman.
Yet Ellie is a warrior who fought through a lot of trauma just to survive. I really hope that Ellie’s soulmate can be someone that truly understands what Ellie has been through since she was born.
I’m sure there are a lot of problems with the game that I didn’t touch on and I apologize for this being more of a rant lol but this shows how much I was disappointed.
To conclude, I honestly do not trust naughty dog with a third game. A dlc would be fine just to tie the loose ends and not ruin the game more for me

The Last of Us Part 2 is a game seven years in the making, the long awaited follow up to what is widely considered one of the best games of the last decade.

Let me start by saying I think the story is amazing. I go much more in to the nitty gritty in my full review on my YouTube channel DotakuHUB but here I will just say that while there were completely personal issues I had with the structure of the story and placement of certain scenes, I think on the whole the narrative was wonderfully crafted. The story made me feel the entire range of emotions. Happiness, sadness, anger, frustration, all of it and there were parts where I felt really uncomfortable and even hated what was happening but that was the whole point. Its meant to make you feel uncomfortable, it's meant to challenge you. The long and short of it is that its not an easy story to experience but that's the whole idea.

Graphically I mean, do I even have to say anything? This game is probably one of the most gorgeous games I have ever played if not THE most gorgeous. Sure its not my personal all time favorite from a stylistic standpoint, that’d be Bloodborne, but it is impossible to argue that this game in terms of pure graphical fidelity isn't absolutely jaw dropping. From the textures on things like Ellie's backpack, to the heaps of little details added to enhance character and weapon models, to the insanely dense environments, to the best in class lighting this game looks fantastic. Much like I couldn’t believe that Part 1 was running on a PS3 I can’t believe Part 2 is running on a PS4 and I can’t wait to see it running even better on the PS5.

The sound design is great. This has some of the most immersive sound design in any game I’ve ever played. The sounds of the various weapons and enemies, the sounds of the surrounding world, the various audio cues, all serve to add to the atmosphere and tone of the game. I also really enjoyed the st of the game, from the licensed tracks to the songs written specifically for the game. It's all really well done.

Gameplay wise this will feel very familiar to the first. You gather resources, craft, upgrade yourself and your weapons all while sneaking around and or killing various threats from both the infected and human enemies. That said there are tons of small changes and tweaks that make the gameplay feel even more enjoyable this time around, at least for me. Ellie for example doesn't need to craft shivs, instead using her knife for quick stealth kills and instead of valuable resources being hidden behind shiv doors you have to use basic problem solving skills to get into some more out of the way areas. Weapon upgrades are no longer locked behind tool kits, instead you can unlock any available weapon upgrades so long as you have sufficient bolts. Almost on the flipside, player upgrades are now locked behind various training manuals in a light skill tree system to enhance your stealth, crafting, combat ext. Stealth has seen an enhancement thanks to the ability to go entirely prone and hide under various objects and in tall grass, which helps in doing away with many of the stereotypical waste high walls from the first game. Combat sees the addition of a dodge mechanic which really helps make melee combat much more plausible and something I actually used way more often this time around.

Overall The Last of Us Part 2 is a more than worthy sequel to Part 1. It created an even more emotionally challenging narrative, the graphics were a massive leap forward, the sound design was top notch and the gameplay was familiar but still a significant improvement of what was there.

I'm a mature gamer and took a HUGE hiatus from gaming after the masterpiece that was 'The Ocarina of Time'. 'The Last of Us' and the 'Uncharted' series were my gateway back to gaming and 'The Last of Us II' has now cemented itself as what I would consider the crowning achievement for what is possible with the art form that is game design. This game deserves a place on the mantel amongst all that we consider holy within the entertainment industry. That includes the best of modern literature, cinema, television, music...the amount of sheer ingenuity, creativity, obsessive attention to detail and love that went into the production of this game I can only begin to imagine. What is even harder to imagine is how anything like this could ever be accomplished again. I felt the same ache I did last night when I completed my first run-through of 'The Last of Us II' that I did when I finished the pioneering achievement that was 'The Ocarina of Time'. This art form deserves to be lauded and regarded at the same level as the rest of the entertainment media we consume, specifically because of games like these. That said, there truly has never been a game with the depth of storytelling, character development, sound design, gameplay, music performance and composition, than what has been achieved here with 'The Last of Us II'. Truly.

If you were moved by anything that Naughty Dog has accomplished in the past, especially the characters they've brought to life through 'The Last of Us', don't hesitate to buy and play this game. Regardless of whether you agree with the decisions they've made with the introductions, fates and farewells of their beloved characters or particular plot elements, don't let ideology or politics prevent you from experiencing this masterpiece. It is just that.

If it helps those who are still on the fence here is a list of games not yet mentioned that I have also thoroughly enjoyed in no particular order:

    - Bloodborne
    - God of War (reboot)
    - Horizon Zero Dawn
    - Red Dead Redemption (I and II)
    - Inside
    - NieR: Automata
    - Breath of the Wild
    - Nioh

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

almost all the leaks before release were correct yet there were people going around saying that none of the leaks were true.
the story is written AND structured poorly.

if your gonna kill a major character you need to do it correctly, if ND had done it halfway through it would have been better. They also needed build Abbys backstory and motivations on why she would want to kill Joel BEFORE not AFTER. because of this ALL of Abby's gameplay sections are boring/unmotivating

the ending is extremely unsatisfying since Abby wasn't killed or at the minimum injured severely only Ellie (who lost the last thing that connected her to Joel, being able to play Guitar).

the entire message of the game is "revenge cycle is bad" but this game doesn't do that troupe any justice at all. there's significantly better stories/anime/games out there with this exact plot point that do it better then TLoU2.

    DON'T BUY.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2... and why I think its one of my favorite game of all time.
CONS :The shock DEATHS, for example Jesse and Yara deaths they just leave me after the shock feeling like what I had done was for nothing. The first games had some of these as well
I think the pacing is really bad but I don t think I could've done it better or someone else for the story it is trying to tell. For example I would've done everything chronological but NO, we would've seen what Ellie is doing in 2033 then 2034 then 2036 then what happends a few days after that and then Ellie kissing with DIna and the rest so NO. You would've forgotten every of those moments by the end of the game. And those flashbacks actually have critical role for the moment they are put in. So now getting to the pros.
Pros: I think the story is very good overall. I don't think the main theme is revenge and is about forgivness and overall the good in humanity. A lot of people are mad about Joel dying either early either "stupid" or that he didn t have a hero death witch is just stupid he is an anti hero ffs, From what we know from the first game is that he only care about himself and the ones that he loves. I thought the first game forgot something but it didnt. The first actual scene where we can see that from Joel is right at the begining before Sarah dies, when he leaves behind a hopeless family in the street. So no I didn t have a problem with Joel not heroic death we still get a lot of momets between him and Ellie after and he wasn t stupid I mean it was too far for them to go back to Jackson and is not like those guys had a firefly band on them and not WLF. And NO there is no plot hole. Abby was actually searching for Tommy, Joel brother cause she knew he was in Jackson it is said in one of the flashbacks. BUT PEOPLE wheren't paying attention to that cause now we don t get to have a villain backstory cuz she just killed our main character ? Come on is just SO STUPID. So Ellie wants to get revenge and she goes and kills Abby's friends to get information about her location. In these moments we see how Ellie gets more comfortable with killing like Joel how his death had an impact on her, IT IS JUST SO GOOD. Then we get to see why Abby killed Joel and that her revenge on him left her with nobody cause now all her friends are dead. We also get some cute bonding moments between her and Lev. She goes after Ellie but she doesn t end up killing her or Dina when she looks at Lev. And Lev is the good part about Abby, he is the motive she tried being a good person. Then after two years at a moment when Ellie was with Dina at a farmhouse, Ellie decides that she wants to go after Abby again against Dina's opinion. She founds Abby but she didnt killed her cause she reminded THE LAST moment of her and Joel , and I dont know if it was intentionally but she was mad at Joel 2 years as she was at Abby. So after 2 years she finally says to Joel that she is ready to forgive him and that she will be seeing him arround. That moment absolutely broke me cause with was so sad. Thats why I think the game is about forgivness, because of Ellie s revenge she gets left with nobody, Abby gets all her friends killed. Joel who didn t care about humanity and murdered an entire hospital gets hated by Elllie. His death was even sadder that it was right after Ellie was ready to forgive him, I DON T GET WHY PEOPLE COMPLAIN IT IS BAD. The first scene of the game was actually Ellie's dream because she was ready to forgive him and that was a moment when they were in the middle of being close and disconected. I love how the guitar is a conection between them because of that first scene. The last scene actually left me thinking she was ready to leave the memories about him behind and get back to her life.
SO the story is very good, I don t need to talk about the combat cause is soo good the exploring is much better the graphics, the views
So my rating for The Last of Us Part II is 9,7/10
stop hating it cause Joel didn t die how or when you wanted. I feel like some people liked the first game and got the impression that now they know everything about writting. I can tell you that the first game had some bad **** in it as well, I mean Tess death doesn't serve other purpose other than for Joel to continue his journey with Ellie cause otherwise he wouldn't have done that. But then anyway he decides to let her with Tommy so yeah Tess death was just as Jesse and Yara death. Sam and Henry the same I mean it s sad and everything but even after seeing it has no impact in the final decision of Joel at the end at the hospital so yeah we can now ,if the user s socre say so, stay and find some bad **** in every video game rather than seeing what it's beautiful about them. Others just now found out that the characters are not the theirs, and the developer's

This game is an absolute disgrace. The story is a complete and utter joke, somehow naughty dog, impressively, managed to undo everything good they did in the first game. The story is shockingly and unspeakably bad. Naughty Dog just tries so hard to distract people from how bad this story is by including disturbing scenes and disgusting sexually explicit scenes, basically products of Neil Druckmann's sick and weird fantasies. Graphics aren't even that great either especially when you compare it to some of Sony's exclusives that came before this pile of junk. Gameplay is typical overrated naughty dog clunky crap. Seriously I can go on and on and on about how bad this game is but my advice is if you want actually good game graphics and good stories and good game play then there are plenty of other games that are worth your money such as God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and even Days Gone. This game is not perfect and honestly I did like the first game better, that said this game is still phenomenal. Think about this, if it were different characters I believe all of this hate towards Naughty Dog wouldnt be there, it would be nothing but praise. Not only that before spouting off hate and review bombing he game once you are finished sit with it for a while. It takes time to digest everything that happened, no it doesn't leave you with a good feeling at the end but it isnt supposed to. It is supposed to make you contemplate what just happened and in the end it is about the cycle of violence and how violence begets violence. In this world there are no heroes and no villains, just people trying to survive and it gives you that perspective because in the end everyone thinks they are doing right unless they are just evil but all the characters in this game are just people none of which are evil and they all believe that they are in the right. So I beg you to just play the game and once finished let it sit with you before making your final conclusion on it, because in my opinion this game is phenomenal. The gameplay is awesome, the animations, the stealth, omg the enemies. When you are playing stealth and the WLF flank you and look for the people you killed it is intense. Anyway in my opinion most of these 0 ratings are people that didn't play the game or cant get past the fact that they killed Joel. "Joel is a **** person"(quote from Tess). And got himself in a heap of trouble when he murdered an entire militia group. PLAY THE GAME IT IS WORTH IT. Some gameplay scenes look straight up like cut scenes and the transition between those two are flawless most of the times. The game gives you a lot of options in the menu to ensure the game is available for everyone to play. The enemy AI definitely improved since the last game, the will flank you if they get the chance and change their route if they find a corpse. The dogs added make enemies with a higher first-kill priority, together with more options to move by jumping and crawling, the game appears to involve a lot of quick strategic thinking. A new type of infected adds to it.
But in The Last of Us, gameplay isn't the priority and most fans of the first game bought the second one for the characters and story. The sequel had high expectations on it's back and they grew the more time passed. Obviously meeting these expectations isn't an easy feat and have mostly not been met based on what has been promised and not delivered.
Horror and survival fall in to th background as human interaction and conflict takes it's place. In it's purest form, this sequel follows the structure of a typical Drama. You know those books which have been played in european theatres hundreds of years ago. Yeah those, this form of storytelling has been ancient since Bertolt Brecht brought up change.
Before I get to my personal opinion, I'd like to point out that I myself am a female gamer who is part of the LGBTQ community and thus I'm glad they added social political statements to normalize them in our society. There is criticism I'd like to add about the execution though.
    Now to my personal opinion:
I watched The Last Of Us the same as Ellie was in the first game back when it was released on Youtube. Although I've been a fan of the game, marking it as one of my favorite game ever since, I forgot a lot about Joel and Ellies relationship in those 7 years. Needless to say, the first shock element in this game didn't work at all. It came far too early to establish any meaning. However, it's also been the only fuel of the story. it's the kind of plot you can put in any world building, even in those that don't have world building. This plot is known to have an obvious ending. The lack of good characters just add to the mess. For a game called The 'Last' of Us, there are too many living people. There are so many characters I couldn't care less about, even when the game tried to make me care. The story likes to jump in time and place, present to backflash, from Ellie to the second protagonist, and vice versa. It's annoying. The first game never did any backflashes and it worked out great despite it. I bet it would've been possible to achieve the goal the developers had without having to play a completely different character. After all we've never played as the Fire Flies in the first game and we still knew they do good.
Now to the one part that probably gets me discredited. We know Ellie likes girls, from the dlc, so do I. I'm not a fan of romance. It wasn't needed in this game to workout. It could've done without or at least much milder. The one straight nude love scene didn't have to happen either. Well, if the game was supposed to resemble the first one. It's not. I accept that.
All in all the game can never be a 10/10, neither a 4/10 if 5/10 is considered average. It's performance and execution is above average, at a 7/10 or 8/10 but my enjoyment beneath all else and my disappointment even higher. I might have scored it objectively, thats not what user reviews is about though. 2/3 of the game is about characters and story and those got 1 points from me, leaving it at a 4/10 for the amazing technical execution.

I made an account just to say this game is **** stupid. Kill off the most beloved character less than 2 hours into the game and the rest of the story is "revenge bad". If you really want to play this game, buy it 2nd hand/used. Don't dump 60 dollars on this dumpster fire.

Gameplay is basically the same as the first game from 7 years ago except NOW YOU CAN PRONE!! WOW!!! INNOVATIVE!!

I really like the story and the graphics are amazing. The game play is great although largely unchanged from the original. It loses a point from me because I think the pacing fails in some of the later half of the game but it is still very much worth playing and buying at retail price. Even when the story is at it's slowest the gameplay is still very good. An interesting aspect is that youI really like the story and the graphics are amazing. Even when the story is at it's slowest the gameplay is still very good. An interesting aspect is that you are not innately a a badass in this game. At the onset you cannot aim well, your firearms sway when you aim and aiming while moving is a feat this becomes easier as the game progresses but you have to earn it. It feels appropriate considering the game is about struggling against the world and everything in it.
A ton of people are dragging this game for unbelievable character reactions and choices but I think that they are justified within the context of the narrative. It is a blind rage, seeing red, bloodlust fueled, quest for revenge and the characters are obsessed with extracting their vengeance. ND is trying to say something about loss and letting go of those who have seriously hurt you and how that is not an easy or possible task in some instances. Are they completely successful? No. Is is objectively bad? Also no. This game is great and should be judged on its merits instead of what the fans wanted instead. If this were the first game no one would be complaining.

Character are just really flat and boring 0 character development. Even the two main characters of the last game became uninteresting. New side characters has nothing that makes them interesting they feel like fillers. And the new main character seems interesting but the way they bring you her story is bad and really flat. Every character decision was made because of some plot not because it was logical. The amount of times they use plot armour or deus ex machina is just impressive and that is just lazy writing. A game that is very story driven with such a bad story writing has ruined it for me. And that makes me sad because. It's probably the most beautiful game you are ever going to see on the ps4. I wouldn't not recommend this game.

So graphic designers, game designer, voice actors and everyone else that has nothing to do with storywriting great job you guys did an amazing job! My message to the story writers maybe try to read a book first.

Forcing players play as Abby doesn't make any sense, we played the first game because we loved the characters, and were willing to make the right choices with them, but the second game, we just play it because we have to, we had no choice...

This is a game that requires the player to have an open mind on the story and respect the author's creative direction, instead of wishing to dictate how the story should be like. There are so many negative reviews that criticize the story direction NaughtyDog took, but I applaud them for doing so instead of doing fan-service and produce a likable but predictable story of Ellie and Joel.

After completing the game, I am glad that I've ignored all the good and bad comments about the game and took my time to enjoy the game as a whole. In short, if you wondering whether you should invest your time in this game, I wholeheartedly say YES and skip the rest of my review below.

Here are a few thoughts about the game after completion (no spoilers):

    1. STORY: In my opinion, the story and the way it unfolds throughout the game is very well thought through and crafted. Yes, the violence is a bit over the top at times, and there are times where I wish I am able to intervene certain scripted actions of my characters. However, having that feeling also proves the story has grown on me and I care about what the characters' actions going to be. Not many games that I played in the past were able to do that to me.
Having said that, the reason to have the last chapter of the game felt a bit forced so we get a more climactic end. Rather being analytical about it, just enjoy it. Also to note is the key story lesson imparted to the player will only be revealed at the very end of the game, and it's something that has been echoed by the supporting characters around our two key characters of the game.

    2. GAMEPLAY: I vaguely remember how TLOU1 plays like, but overall the gameplay mechanics felt the same with some enhancements. Nothing wrong with that as it retains what's already great in the first game. As a casual FSP game player, I did wished the character movement and weapon aiming mechanics could be more snappy rather. The introduction of sniffing dogs which will hunt you down and some tough infected beings is a good addition, which forces me to move around sometimes instead of just hiding in the same spot of comfort.
Enemy AI is probably one of the weakest points of this game overall, where at times they feel downright dumb. Maybe it will be improved when playing at a higher difficulty setting (I played in Moderate setting).

    3. GRAPHICS & GAME ATMOSPHERE: No question on the graphics department, as NaughtyDog would have spent a lot of effort from various concept art of game locations to the detailed finished environment of the various game locations. But what I loved the most is the sound design. From the tranquil rainfall of Seattle to the eerie silence of dark, infested rooms and buildings, it really draws me into the situation of the characters in the game.

    4. MUSIC: Love it, the songs are very well composed for the game in cutscenes, and blends well to the various real-time events during the game very well. Not to mention a few pieces of songs sang by some game characters with accompanying acoustic guitar.

    5. GAME CHARACTERS: Excellent voice acting plus the emotions portrayed in the fine nuances eyes, facial and body language really shines through in the game cutscenes. key character backstory development is sufficient for the story as it progresses towards the excellent final hours and conclusion of the game.

    Played on: PS4
Total playtime: 37 hours 27 minutes
    Difficulty: Moderate
Favorite games: The Witcher 3, God of War (2018), Mass Effect Trilogy, Tomb Raider (reboots), Uncharted, TLOU1

Unfortunately had so much potential that it fails to live up to, if you liked the first one you will like this, graphics, game mechanics, tone and music are all incredible.
Despite being a bleak world it is a joy to play

Unfortunatly the story is a little all over the place, there is some good stuff in here its just presented really badly.

Not terrible but certainly not perfect

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
