I read about the leaks but still came in with an open mind because TLOU part 1 had one of gaming's best storytelling and I felt like that they would still retain that quality. Then all the reviews came in and my expectations shot through the roof only to eventually crash and ignite when I experienced the story. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT EVER. Then I heard about all the DMCA takedowns and Sony Reps and those rumors made this game very uncomfortable to play. I think Naughty Dog may have officially ruined their reputation with this entry. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. How do you take one of the most revolutionary, emotionally complex, deeply affecting video game concepts of all time and turn it into 30 hours of revenge porn? What brain dead moron green lit this script? It is just awful. The only high points are the fleeting moments you get to spend with Ellie and Joel. Their character chemistry is still top notch, but there’s sadly precious little of it. The rest of the game is filled with uninteresting, one dimensional characters whose motivations and relationships with each other make absolutely no sense. Oh, and one of the most forced, awkward sex scenes I’ve ever witnessed. The game mechanics, graphics, sound design, voice acting, etc., are all excellent. But Naughty Dog already set the bar for all of that in the first one. All they had to do here was meet it again (and I think they actually surpassed it in a lot of ways). But at the end of the day, a game like this is about the story and the characters, and TLOU2 falls well short in that regard. Where Joel’s story in the original was one of redemption, Ellie’s story here is basically “we’re going to kill the best character in the game almost immediately, then make you spend half the game playing as the psycho that beat him to death, and THEN, we’re gonna make you let her go and take everything from you, including your one remaining connection to him (guitar). Because f*** you, that’s why.”

As a sequel, this game just felt unnecessary. I’d have much rather they just left the original stand alone. It was a masterpiece in every sense. Part II added nothing for me, and I think ultimately only tarnishes one of the most lauded franchises in video game history.

Joel is killed brutally. Someone people spent much of the first game building an attachment with. I believe it’s because Naughty Dog doesn’t think games should have straight white males anymore. You play the second half of the game as his killer. How ND thought this was a good idea eludes me. Abby (the killer) is not a likeable person. People want to play more Ellie instead they have to play as someone they hate. The story is all about revenge being bad, yet Abby gets hers and walks away while Ellie loses everything. The game doesn’t give you the choice to kill Abby as Ellie. Robbing you of what you want to do because god forbid Neil Druckmans leftist masterpiece character Abby dies.

The game play is ok, just like the first one, but making me play as the main villain for a solid 10 hours, and then against Ellie? Come on, what is the logic in that even. This story destroys my love for the first game, and probably a little for the Uncharted series as well, because now I am genuinely afraid that ND will produce Uncharted 5 or whatever the next title is as an SJW "piece of art". I just want to play games and have fun, and I don't want to experience another disappointment as this, or something like GOT season 8, again. Expand

    DONT BELIEVE THE NEGATIVITY!!!

This game is an excellent continuation of TLOU. The story seems shallow at first glance until you realize that the collectibles in game have been given a much more important role than previously. Instead of having the story spoon fed to you in cut scenes, it rewards careful and deliberate exploration with meaningful interactions, dialogue, and even Ellie's internal monologue in the form of journal entries. The story has a lot of interesting parallels to the first game that get more fascinating the longer you dwell on them.

Gameplay is strictly better than the first, better weapon variety, better craftables, more interesting skill trees, more believable AI. Melee fighting actually takes effort now instead of button mashing square.

10/10, will play again, and buy DLC.

The Last of Us was built on a strong story, very well told, with a sensational script, which made a deep connection between the player and the characters. At The Last of Us 2 there is simply no logic in the events, it seems that there is no script, and they simply ended the narrative to defend a political / social agenda. As a fan it hurts me to say that, but they ended up with The Last of Us.

I loved seeing the relationship between Joel and Ellie, and sometimes even felt tenderness for Ellie, honestly a touching story. Now in part 2, well it's crap. Who wants to play a story where Joel dies, the main character, and there is homo propaganda and forced diversity?, the making of the story is dull and simple, it is only about revenge. It looks gorgeous. The scenery and characters look amazing. There is virtually no difference between the cut scenes and the gameplay and you often don't even realise you've entered or left one. The areas feel like they have a history and exist when the characters aren't there and there's lots of cool little details to find if you take the time to look around. The mechanics are an improvement on the previous game and the quicktime events have been reduced to a minimum and are very forgiving which was an issue with the previous one. Overall combat and movement is very smooth and the only small issue I had was that sometimes dodging in combat meant your attacker went off screen which was annoying. There a multiple ways to get through areas from stealth to combat to distractions to just running for it and often you'll end up doing a combination of all of those. Like the first game there were times the encounters dragged a little if you were stealth-ing it but there were scary and terrifying times too and fast moving action. The only "bug" I ever noticed was a hint icon wouldn't go away at one bit until I moved to the next area. I loved the first game and avidly avoided spoilers bar the teaser trailers and was excited to see what the story would hold. It was a tough story to experience and it is totally different from the first game. It's hard to pin down. It's a tale about revenge, loss, grief, consequences and bittersweet memories. It is not a happy story but it does have lighter moments too. It is told via cutscenes and the little character interactions like in the first game. I thought the voice acting, character animation and music was superb. Even listening to enemies will drop little details about whats going on plus there a load of notes and side stories to find. The game play does a good job of making you feel what the characters feel, even when you don't want to. It has an unexpected switch in the middle which caught me by surprise which I wasn't sure about but I went with it and it paid off. I understand why they had to do it that way and I think it was the right choice and for me it really worked. The characters do things I don't want them to but I understand their reasons which I loved about the first game too. The game makes me care about them and I want them to do better and I wanted them to survive this in spite of their actions. The ending was dark but with a glimmer of light and it will stay with me for a long time, much like the first one did. I absolutely loved it even though I felt like it absolutely destroyed me playing it. I want to give it a 10 but the extremely minor issues puts it at a 9 (edit: after much thought, reading that a game doesn't have to be perfect to get a 10 and now on my second play where I'm spotting foreshadowing I missed, I have to go with 10) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally finished my first playthrough, and honestly, all of the negative takes on this game are not deserved.

It's not like people didn't see this onslaught coming from the moment a trailer revealed Ellie to yes, be definitely into girls, and yes, it's going to serve as something as part of the story. The reveal of the leaks only helped amplify people to have a "reason" to be mad and want to cancel their preorders, and even be ready to drop negative scores on release date, which they definitely did.

A number of negative reviews that include "woke" and "SJW" doesn't really surprise me, and they're definitely coming from incels who didn't even actually play the game.

The reviews citing "story" issues: I'm convinced most of these are from players who didn't finish the game. You can tell by the fact that the "most helpful" reviews of the game right now are coming from day-one reviews, and there's quite simply no way anyone was beating this game in just a few hours. But the few who did actually play through the game, and still want to cite their contempt for the story, I've gotta say they're pretty low IQ and simple folks. The story is much more dynamic than the original and unconventional. This is something that should be appreciated in gaming, especially in sequels to a successful new IP. But nope, they didn't get the game "they wanted". They didn't get another story of duo-team Joel/Ellie going and kicking some ass and trying to survive, so **** the director and the devs because they were too dull to get it, apparently. This is the problem with entitled fanboys. But let's be honest, no matter what the story entailed, they wouldn't have liked it, because the original game is popular, got loads of awards, and the sequel was highly anticipated. So like so many sequels to equally successful games since: it was never going to live up to their expectations. But the leaks didn't help. It's very aggravating to see tens of thousands of talentless losers try to sabotage the success of years of hard work by the dev team for quite literally no actual good reason.

Unfortunately for these crybabies, the game is actually legitimately good. If you enjoyed the game mechanics of the first game, you'll feel right at home with the sequel. A few new weapons, a few new stealth mechanics, a new means of upgrading abilities and weapons. It's familiar, but fresh.

The graphics got a bump, and it makes the overall feeling of the world around you and the way you traverse, explore, and combat enemies much more breathtaking. It's a very pleasant experience and no doubt the devs put a lot of work into attention to detail.

When there is music playing, it's soothing and meshes well with the moment, which is what it's all about. I'm a fan of minimalism with music in gaming when it makes sense. The Last of Us has always been one of those games where that makes sense. But when it happens, it needs to matter. Thankfully with TLOU2, as was with the first, this is the case.

    The story.

This is arguably the biggest point of contention with players right now. And I say arguably very loosely, because you kind of see the writing on the wall with how a lot of these bad actors just can't separate their assertion that the story is bad, with their need to openly display their contempt for the fact that Ellie's sexuality was made apparent, and even part of the story. Now, of course, no one will have anything to say about the sex scene with Abby, and her romantic history with one of the other supporting characters.

The story is very good, it's thought-provoking, and it challenges your perception of what storytelling can be. The idea that the story is "predictable", as I've seen other player reviews state, is ridiculous. The only way it was predictable is if you went out of your way to watch the story leaks, and even then, there's no way you're going to be able to predict the outcome of anything in this game with such minimal amounts of information leaked by a disgruntled former employee.

I honestly don't understand why gamers set expectations for sequels to games they like. For people who complain about predictability and bad storytelling, it's weird how they want a story to be exactly the way they envision it being - which sounds more predictable than this game ever ended up being.

Players shouldn't be driven off by the bad reviews from people who definitely didn't play the game, and already had their minds made up after they saw the leaked footage. Experience the full extent of the content yourself. This team clearly put a lot of effort into providing something fresh, and if you liked the first game, they deserve to have their hard work be given an honest chance.

Now I'm onto starting my second playthrough so I can complete my plat trophy. 10/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Neil Druckmann just made a $60 SJW propaganda instead of the game we waited for 7 years. Don't get me wrong, I'm not furious about the game containing characters with various races and sexual orientations. I have absolutely no problem with that. However, I'm furious for TLOU 2's inconsistently breaking all the characters' personalities in order to make a point, characters' motivations that don't add up in order to make a point, and throw away/killing characters with no sensible explanation IN ORDER TO MAKE A **** POINT. For what? so that Mr. Druckmann could enlighten us about 'how video games should treat their female characters'.

If these aspects of the game was advertised clearly from the trailers, I would have not be so angry at least, because if that was the case, I would not have bought it in the first place. Instead, Naughty Dog released a trailer deliberately deceiving customer as if the TLOU 2 is all about Joel and Ellie's story. But the reality is far harsh. Joel dies in the beginning of the game and you are forced to play as the killer Abby half of the game as if the game was forcefully educate players "See? Abby is not so bad. Joel was the bad guy in her eyes" and this take was done in very poorly paced manner.

This piece of abomination made people realize the fact that the success of previous TLOU was accomplished by collective efforts from talented staffs once Naughty Dog had. Namely, Bruce Straley.

Don’t buy this propaganda and don’t trust 10/10 user reviews for they are bought by Sony. ND and Sony seem very desperate. Why? because they know the game is so **** up.

The biggest problem that the most of people had (and that brought the review bombing to this page) was about the way it show us homosexuality. The game doesn't shove it in your face, they just took one of the elements that they showed us for the first time in Left Behind (The Last of Us DLC) and they decided to develop it a little bit more, by making this character having a couple that is a girl and is in the whole game.
And the other problem that caused this review bombing was that this game's story is "politically correct" something that I will say that is completely false, because the majority of the things that you do during the story are on the opposite way.
This game isn't for everyone, kids can't play it because of it's brutality, and the adults that should play it need to be open-minded and mature because of all the themes that these work of art show.

I've never had such emotional response to a work of fiction before.
They took very brave decisions with the story, and for me it was all brilliant. Exactly what I want from a story. Misery in fiction is cozy to me. If that's not your cake, it might not be the game for you.

The story is utter garbage that doesn't add anything meaningful to the first one. Some games aren't meant to have sequels. Some stories stand on their own. Star Wars is an ideal comparison. If you like TLJ you might like this game. It takes the characters you grew attached to and throws them away for cheap twists to tell a story that has been told a hundred times already and replaces meaningful characters with some of the most unlikeable ones I've ever seen in a video game. They aren't bad, they just have nothing about them that makes me invested in who they are, and I couldn't care less to see the rest of their arc.

This was a colossal waste of such a massive opportunity for the story they could have told with this game. I appreciate the effort made by all of the dev team. The design of this game is fantastic. The detail put into the environments, animations, facial expressions, particle effects and so much more is second to none. You will not play another game on PS4 with this level of polish and quality. It's just such a shame that it couldn't have been an excellent story, and have all of the detail the devs worked so hard to build in it as well. I'm just... disappointed.

It seems some creatives have discovered that angering fans of established and well liked properties or characters will create a hugely negative response, in turn fueling debate and argumentation online. This seems to be interpreted as a positive thing by many, for no apparant reason.
As far as the game and it's technology goes, it looks and sounds wonderful (a lot of skilled and talented work was wasted in this game's production) but there's very little that's in any way interactive. The lush vistas are merely skyboxes and billboards, the detailed environments will be merely glanced at as the player taps triangle to pick up the same crafting ingredients they were picking up 8 years earlier, in the worthwhile original. This is the game's major flaw (other than the terribly written 'plot') - the game is identical to the first in playability in every way; only three actions (jump, dodge and prone) differ, none of which adds anything to the game. Further, the venerable and cheap PS4 Jaguar core only being able to offer at best 1440p upscaled at (barely) 30fps makes attempting to aim with a joypad an exercise in frustration.
Then there's the review bombing. Prior to release this game was brigaded with 10/10 and 100% scores from 'outlets' functioning as marketing arms for Sony. It seems the public are finally becoming aware of the corruption and nepotism that has largely destroyed gaming journalism in the last few years, and are now attempting to make their voices heard in the only ways available to them.
In closing, I would recommend to new players to avoid this game entirely - while it looks nice, viewing a playthrough online will save you 60 bucks. It's about 20% walking simulator with no interaction, 60% awful, poorly written and infuriating cutscenes - and 20% sneaking up behind people/monsters and tapping triangle. Terrible.
To those who played the original, I would avoid this like the plague. Comparisons to 'The Last Jedi' are appropriate and apt; beloved characters written by someone who clearly hates them are destroyed and literally spat upon in an attempt to drive your 'engagement'.
The only thing I was engaged to do was return the discs to my friend and leave this hugely negative review. 2/10 is not a 'review bombing' score; it is my genuine assessment of this software release.
    Do not buy it.

Story: I am shocked at the absolute disregard for the characters and themes set up by the first game. Joel feels like a different character, and sure maybe he could have grown over time, but we don’t see it and it feels extremely cheap. Without spoiling anything, the ending was a total cop out and was just huge sequel bait. I am beyond disappointed with the story as a hole, I’ve waited 7 years for a cliffhanger ending and a terrible plot line.

Conclusion: if you cared about TLOU to any capacity, this will feel like a complete slap in the face. I would recommend that you do NOT buy this game, it has very little in the way of redeeming qualities.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. We all know that the main selling point of this game is the story. Well....they **** it up.

    First :
Those who are saying we are mad because of the lesbian and trans thing going on. No, we aren't. All of us knew ellie was a homosexual and no one was mad about it in the first game.
    Second :
Nothing good came out of killing Joel. How the **** could they use him for some cheap shock value. I mean at least they could make up for it right? Nope. Just ****ing killed one of the characters that drives the game and you ****ing expect us to sympathize with a stranger character we don't even know. No amount of understanding will help us empathize with someone who killed one of the crucial character of the game. And then you spit us on the face and make us play that ****ing character.
Third : It's a ****ing revenge story with no revenge. Nothing good comes out of it. Everyone dies. She spares her life. It's a ****ing disaster. And Joel's last word to Ellie is 'Yep.' Like wtf. Really?!? ****ing lazy writing.

We are not here to have a woke contest. Naughty Dog spits on our face and disgracefully kills off what could have been one of the best games of all time. All the character development for nothing but to make a point that does no good. Ellie kills hundreds but spares the killer of joel...yeah right. We had to wait 7 years for this **** You guys suck.

Managed to hide from the leaks and got the game day 1 because I am hugely obsessed with the first game. It truly hurts with what they did to this story when they should be receiving kudos for such amazing graphics and AI.

The Last of us part 2 is literal trash, don't waste your money. The first game was so amazing and one of my very favorites. So sad how Neil Drukmann along with the rest of leftist feminist sjw Naughty Dog company has ruined this once great franchise. It had so much potential but has now all been wasted. So many plotholes and sjw agenda trash has been stuffed into this game it's ridiculous. The Last of us part 2 is literal trash, don't waste your money. About the only good part of the whole experience is the amazing graphics and semi decent combat, that's it. The story is such garbage and terrible writing that it just ruins everything the first game set up so well. Joel and Ellie's story deserved so much more than what Naughty Dog did with this. I did not have a single once of fun playing this game, It is depression incarnate. All leading up to one of the worst endings in a game I have every seen before. This game is hollow, Naughty Dog is a former shell of what a great company they used to be giving us titles like Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter and Uncharted, but this, this is just vile. All to further their progressive pushing feminist sjw loving agenda. Do not support this steaming pile of **** that they call a game. If they would have took this and made a different game all together that would have been much better, but no they completely ruined the legacy of the first game. Expand

The game looks stunning! Voice acting is great! These are the only positive things i can say.

This game (technically) isn't a zero... BUT.. it really is. I didn't want to continue playing after the first two hours. I stopped playing the game and will not be playing it ever again. There is no need. The game felt like angry fan fiction. If you're looking to continue the fantastic

The game felt like angry fan fiction. If you're looking to continue the fantastic story of Joel and Ellie of the first game.. well.. dont bother. This is the first time, in my 30 years of gaming experience, that i stopped playing a game because of the story.

    F*ck this game

I am an ordinary guy who hoped to play a good story game, which was the first part. And I got some kind of feminist madness, where there is no logic, no good characters. The main thing is that women dominate everyone, a completely uninteresting story! I love the first part, and I hate the second part, the biggest disappointment

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They have ruined the legacy of the first game with this game. Joel dies, Ellie acts dumb and makes poor choices the whole game. Here's the gameplay in a nutshell: ride on your horse, kill 3 enemies, cutscene, walk through empty city, kill 6 enemies, stealth kill 3 clickers using Xray vision, repeat in some order. There are no set pieces or awesome moments like the first game had. And for the love of god this has to be the biggest slap in your face of an ending. What was the point of the redemption arc if she just let's her live. She killed someone who was like a father to Ellie. It is not worth the payoff. It's a damn shame. Save your money. SNAP! Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
