To be fair the game play, though not much of a change, still okay. graphics was nice and good. that being said, the reason i like the TLOU1 is the story so for me this is just a let down. if not for the story i think it wont be much of a drag to play this. new characters are just not likable. original characters just nerfed for the sake of the plot so dissapointing. too linear and just bleak

I am bewildered at how simply bad writing could turn a beloved franchise and the whole community against itself. There are so many things fundamentally wrong with the game I can’t even point out one and say this is the problem here: my personal issues were with the poor writing, with inexistent character development, with inconsistencies between how the story was presented in the trailer and the final product, with how contradicting the plot was, with being forced to play an insignificant character you were just introduced to, with how character progression was managed from the first game, with inconsistent message, with misleading presentation of the game pre-release, with lackluster ending that undermines the purpose of the whole journey, with unnecessary sex scenes, cheap plot devices and slight character remodels that served to further the game’s message with disregard to characters and plot. I am sad to admit that this game has been more than a disappointment from the first part and this makes me question whether I trust any further products Naughty Dog puts forth. I give it a 2 only for the fantastic job from the technical department; 0 for characters, story, ending and message. Expand

I am an ordinary player having gone through part I and just completed part II. Obviously it's rubb-ish comparing two episodes. Who the f**k is the main character of THE LAST OF US? why the time i play as Abby is more than Ellie???

Graphics are great. But that's ist. Everything else is the same except that the story became just an average revenge-plot filled with shock-value and plot-holes. Not for me.

I don't play games that want to make you feel bad. I got enough of that in my real life.

I appreciate that naughty dog took a chance, but it just didn't work for me. Very great graphics and gameplay, nice atmosphere also, but biggest problem was the story that i didn't like it at all. In a Naughty Dog i always spect a brilliant story, but with this game i didn't get that. To me, is a 4/10 at best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the first game, so much that I have played through it multiple times and not once did I ever rush through it. I hoped that part 2 would have made me want to play though it at least a second time but sadly I doubt that I ever will. I avoided all the leaks so I had no inclination to be skeptical of purchasing it. Though I did watch the trailers which made be beyond hyped, as the original was perhaps one of my, if not favorite games. I was so excited to have another Joel and Ellie adventure. That was my main reason for getting the game. So I was shocked when I played, and in just around two hours of gameplay, they killed him off in such a disrespectful way. I was even more shocked when I realized that they replaced Joel's character model and line from one of the best moments in the trailers, with a character that, although enjoyable, paled in comparison. Not only that but they purposely swapped out old and young Joel models from the trailer, making many to believe he was going to be a core character that would accompany you throughout at least most of the game. To me this is false advertisement and purposely misleading the fans just to ensure they sold more copies of the game. Its not that Joel was killed off, its how he was killed off and how they tricked every one in the trailers. I honestly loved the gameplay mechanics, and graphics, but to me a game can have all the best graphics, gameplay, sound and world design, and if the story is ruined, that just loses me. Also, having to play as the main antagonist for so long, for one was boring to me and I just wanted to get it over with. I understand trying to show that there are two sides to every story, but players tend not to care when that character killed off such a beloved character, so it makes it hard to sympathize with her. I do not believe that this was a game worth waiting 7 years for. Especially when it ruins such beloved characters. I couldn't wait to finish it because of how dark and depressing the entire game was. Yeah im sure tens of thousands of people finished a 25 hour game in 3 hours and decided it was a 0/10. I mean come on the amazing graphics, sound design, animations, graphics are worth 0 points? I didn't read any spoilers/leaks and I loved the game. Yeah it's not perfect but compared to the average game it's in a totally different league. It brought out a lot of emotions (good and bad) and made me think a lot, and am still thinking about it 2 weeks after finishing it. A lot of people saw spoilers, decided they hated it and didn't give it a legit chance (or didn't even play it at all), blew the negatives out of proportion and minimized the good parts of the game. People look at the original through rose-colored glasses, yeah it was a great game but it wasn't perfect either. Bottom line people are sad/mad because a character they like died, but Ned Stark died suddenly and brutally and everyone praised GoT for being so ballsy to kill off a main character. At the end of the day it's a game and the amount of hatred this game has brought into the world is sad and ridiculous. Not liking something is one thing, but sending death threats to the creators/actors that played a character you dont like is absurd. Expand

Story - 10/10 : It's the most controversial and complex story I've ever witnessed in my life. This game will drain you emotionally and mentally every single time you hop on to play. Many people hate it/ say that it doesn't fit as a story for TLOU, but to be honest I say otherwise. This game ends off on the saddest note I've ever seen. It's all about a revenge story that flips the table completely and turns it into a forgiveness that shows the most heart wrenching twist in a story I've ever seen. The whole story all around is executed pretty much perfectly , the writing is amazing and so are a lot of the new characters. It is a journey that everybody should experience and it's definetly worth the 60$.

The graphics are amazing and the scenery is just beautiful. The story was alright. Most of the new characters are boring and the old ones are not recognizable. The gaming experience is very nice but as a last of us sequel the story was a bit disappointing. Obviously, it is their story and they can decide whatever they want. This game is definitively emotionally difficult to process. I understand why people love it and why they hate it. ND said this game is not "fun to play" - well he was more right than he expected I guess. I give this game 8/10. I admit I was expecting something more epic after the first installment, but we get what we get. If this game's theme is to be brutal to the point it devastates even the player then I'm fine with it, I'm not gonna cry because the game turned out the way it did.

Lastly, I completely disagree with people who rate it below 6, as bad as the story may be viewed this game's mechanics, graphics & gameplay are on the next level, evaluations below 6 to me are purely emotional and undeserved.

I waited 7 years for this! What a disappointment.

Now, the graphics were a solid 9/10. The gameplay was more of 8/10 for me. It was fun for sure but unfortunely, there was nothing innovative in part 2 and the fighting does get repetitive. It was brave what Druckmann & co. tried to do, but it didn't work. I don't mind the death of a certain character, but my problem was how and when it happened. It was out of character and felt rushed. And the Abby story? My gosh, I really couldn't care less about Abby and her friends and just wanted to run through her story as fast as possible. At one point they showed a friend of hers in a body bag, and we were supposed to feel sad or shocked he was dead. But honestly, I had no clue who the dude was. That's how little character development these guys got.

Dina and Ellie were definitely cute together, I just wished the built up Dina's character and her relationship to Ellie more because until the farm with JJ, they had very little chemistry.

Oh and the Abby and Owen scene (you know which one I'm talking about) was pure cringe.

All in all, this game is a 5. Bec the story is way more important to me than graphics and gameplay in a game like this, it will also weigh in heavier.

I think I would have been happier with Ellie and Joel's story if LoU2 never happened.

This games looks amazing the gameplay is incredible naughty dogs usual gameplay polish is here with graphics better than any game they have made before. However as this is a narrative based game I’ve got to acknowledge that the story is entirely lacking and takes away from how enjoyable the gameplay can be. The reliance on coincidences and plot Armor withdraws almost any stakes in each set piece. And of course there’s Abby one whom is defended by many critics who ignore the fact that her and Manny attempts to justify killing kids in a throw away line in Seattle day on as well as the face she was clearly didn’t care and almost enjoyed the woman who’s throat she was about to slit was pregnant just to get one over on Ellie that’s just sick Ellie defended herself against Mel and Owen. Just because Abbie saves two people inevitably killing several of her owlf comrades does not redeem her in any way. The ending is something I won’t go into because I don’t even know how to feel about it and would rather recommend the last of us remastered as that is a 10/10 game if this game had a multiplayer faction mode like that one I would give it an extra point or two but the great gameplay is simply overshadowed by the contrived and manipulative narrative.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

But we were never here for Graphics and Gameplay. The first game excelled in its story and was praised for its depiction of characters.

Sadly, the same thing can't be said about this game. The Story feels like a bad fan fiction. The protagonists behave out of character and very often illogical.

Overall the legacy of the first game is not treated with respect. It's apparent that it was more important to ship some Agendas instead of making a good game. The ending especially feels like a punch to the face.

Amazing Gameplay, Graphics and animation no doubt, but JESUS there's no doubt sony paid for all those reviews I mean the STORY, like seriously WTF. It's not that it's shocking its just that its plain bad. It's laughable and ignores all the character development of the past games. The Joel scene was so badly written that I was literally laughing during that scene.

I evaded leaks and all that BS, but now maybe I should have done that. The story was good, but unrewarding which would make you wonder why you even went for the quest in the first place. Can’t get a refund which would make anyone feeling bitter if they didn't like the game. I gave it a 4/100. I didn’t enjoy the game. It was boring. I literally almost slept in my own playthrough which is a first to me. it didn't exceed my expectations, it's just an edgy game trying to live up to its prequel. I just wished it had more depth in it with a better ending. I was playing this game with some friends who had watched the spoilers and by the end of the game they laughed at the grimace I made, I don't think I have ever cringed so hard in my entire adult life but this is the last time I buy anything on day 1. Edit:I replayed the game and I ended up getting a different experience. I think that the fact that I hasted the game made me judge it too harshly. It didn't get better, I just realized some significance of some events which I didn’t in my first playthrough. All in all I don’t look forward to any last of us 3 any time soon. Do I recommend the game? No, definitely not on this price. However I do recommend buying it if on sale. Expand

    -Game looks wonderful
    -Atmosphere is nice
    -That's it

The game takes the story that TLOU worked well to make and just **** on it, it lies to the fans about Joel, It lies about Ellie being the only playable character, makes you play as Abby but doesn't give you any excuse to like her, just inserts her in as Joel's killer, no of the other characters give you any reason to like them. Ellie completely changes from what she was in TLOU, some of her decisions don't even make any sense when compared to who she was in TLOU even if she's "grown up| and speaking of Grown up, there's almost ten to none character development, whatever character development there was, must have been hidden under its just terrible story. The ending is even more ass then the story itself. Its a story about revenge.

The gameplay; its nothing, it does little to improve upon the first game's gameplay and just seems like the most basics of a combat system, its nothing special but is functional and decent enough where you can at least kill enemies without any issue; too bad that game constantly tries to shame you for doing the most basic of actions that almost all games share; Killing enemies in order to progress and survive. It does so without impunity and generally just makes it unfun. The upgrade system isn't anything either, again, its just one of the most basic things implemented in that is just functional and decent enough that you can use it without issue, only real flavor to it is watching the gun/weapons be taken apart a little but even that is shallow compared to even some older games with a more advanced upgrade system that runs on less powerful consoles and systems. The stealth is pretty bare-bones as well and runs just like your traditional "hey there's stealth in this game too, so yeah" type of games, sure, I'll admit, the dogs do provide uniqueness to it with being able to sniff you out and lead their owners too you needing you to make a quick decision on killing the dog and their owner too, but again, that's rather bare-bones since that's a situation that pops up in games with any resemblance of a stealth system and still occurs in games with even arguably better stealth systems, hell, even in MGS and Splinter Cell you still run into those scenarios with the enemies just simply following their basic patrol routes. Speaking of enemies; the AI has improved, kind of, from previously TLOU, but is still rather stupid. The human enemies in my honest opinion are just zombies with guns capable of sounding human and thats it.

ND has falsely advertised this game. They took what the first game created and burnt it, stabbed it, stomped it and beat it into the dirt then tried to stick it back up. Just because your first game does well, doesn't always mean you need to create a sequel, especially if you're going to trash it like what happened here. Also, who the **** makes a self-insert of themselves for a game they're making, puts it in, spits on one of the main characters they killed and then proceeded to **** irrelevant character we just put in that everyone hated within just two hours of the game?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was deeply saddened by the direction the team took this franchise. Whats worse is that they seem to have lost touch with their fan base. The first act of the game starts off the best. It is as close to the original, in feel, as the game gets. The cutscenes that show Joel and Ellie’s relationship growth, as a father and daughter, hits a stride reminiscent of the tone shown in part one. I feel these are well done and should have been the focus of the game. This quickly devolves as the game hits its second and third acts. You are forced to play as characters you have no history with and I would go as far to say hate as much as Ellie. There is a quote Druckmann used during development that got alot of attention. The quote goes “We don’t use fun to describe games” or something along those lines. This shows in the game. The focus has shifted from the original to a complex mess of running around and watered down story telling. Ellie’s arc, sadly, feels cheap. She makes decisions that don’t make sense. She is robbed of the revenge she is seeking through out the game. I understand they want to show change, and that Ellie, at this point understands killing and revenge leads no where. But the way this is implemented is poor to the point of juvenile writing. She decides at the end to let Abby live. The player has no chooce in this and makes the nihilistic point of the game feel like a 20-30 hour slog for absolutely no reason. You play far too long as Abby. Abby’s story arc feels rushed and does the exact opposite of what it tries. The team wants us to sympathize and humanize with Abby. This backfires, almost immediatly, we are forced to play as Abby for 10-15 hours...far too long. Abby is a very flat character with an arc that feels cringy and cheap. There is a part in her story where you play as her, and you literally beat the hell out of Ellie and Dina. This part disgusted me. It went two far, and really played out like a grown man beating the **** out of two women. This was disgusting and uncalled for. Additionally there is a sex scene between Abby and Owen in the game. This was also very disturbing. I didnt feel it was needed for character growth, or to further the story. The way its implemented is not sweet or caring but forceful and carnal. Like something out of a prison rape scene. Again - too far naughty dog....too far. You could cut Abby out completely and the story would be the same. Maybe even better.
Then in the final segment you return to Play as Ellie. At this point I felt confused and disheartened as the game I thought I was buying was for me to play as Joel and Ellie. Ellie failed in killing Abby, during round one. She now gets word from Tommy to Abby’s location, and sets out for round two?
The point of this, as I understood it, was to show how Ellie loses everything hunting for revenge. However, I am left wondering why, at this point Ellie is trying to go after Abby again. Ellie has already given up the hunt, but on a whim and some loose info, decides to pick back up the crusade. This is dumb.
Ellie finds Abby after killing a faction, that was only introduced at this point in the game, so we could have bad guys to kill. Ellie finds Abby who has been caught by this faction, fights her and decides to let her go. At this point Ellie has killed 3 of the people who helped kill Joel and let the actual killer go? This made no sense. Why would Ellie kill so many un-named people to get there, just to let Abby go? Why does Ellie act so traumatized by killing? She did it throughout the first game, throughout the second game, with no issue. No remorse, no great self conflict. But now, the three people are so hard to kill? Again dumb story and exposition.
I want the game where I get to play as Tommy. He is a effing rockstar in this game. He gets most the bad guys, he is a bad ass sniper and I want the dlc where I see his story and maybe some revenge at the very end where he snipes Abby.
The best character that got development in this game was Joel. He would have been a perfect way to show diversity had he been the only segment pointing to it. He shouldn’t have been killed in such a disrespectful way. Give me the game that mirrors the first 5 mins where you play as Joel. Give me a remake of the first Last of us with this games graphical improvements. Give me that, not this hot turd.
The things I liked about the game were the graphics..
The gameplay has shown little imporvement from the first game. The jump mechanic is poorly implemented. This was suprising since the team makes uncharted.
In closing. This game misses the mark, doesnt improve on the original and wastes your time with characters you hardly care about. Abby’s story is disgusting, deranged, and irrelevant. Do not buy! Pretend it doesnt exist, play the first last of us, play the remasterd and pretend Naughty Dog didnt hype the last 7 years of your life for a huge let down.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of, I CANNOT believe that THIS is the sequel to one of the greatest games of all time.

I... why should I write the reason why I give it a 0? The media, the makers, and those who "love" the game will just dimiss eveything I say based on my being "a racist, anti-lgbt incel", and all those other buzzwords. As if I had any issues with the characters in the first game...

I'll only say this: games like the Last of Us are CHARACTER driven. There are no characters in this game, only marionettes forced to act and make decisions according to the writers' personal believes. This game's story is, and I'm DEAD SERIOUS, nothing short of propaganda, and not even LGBT propaganda neccessarily (although you can't blame me for thinking it is when all male characters in the game are either killed off or retired by the end of it).

In other words, it qualifies as propaganda by the simple fact that the characters are (so blatantly) forced to act out the ideology and the world-view of the writers to the point of making ridicuouse decisions no person who survived so long in that world would make.

Art, on the other hand, is creating characters (and setting up their pasts from the get-go!!!) so fully fleshed out that the story practically writes itself.

I... just can't with this game. Abhorant. Abhorant writing. With games like this I don't care how pretty it looks. It's not why I was willing to pay 60 bucks. Jesus... this just made me even more furiouse. I wasted 60 f*cking dollars on this utter grabage.

In a nutshell: this game's story feels like the experiment in story telling of an amateur, untalented, hack writer in college who thinks the world of himself... named Neil Druckman.

The game has also a surprising number of glitches and bugs throughout. What did they work on for 7 years? It sure as hell wasn't the story.

No. The '0' I gave this game is not exaggerated, not when it's a betrayal thrown into our faces with the expectation to say thank you on top.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphic is beautiful, animations are really good and the soundtrack is amazing, the gameplay is the same as the first game, the new mechanics (like the jump button) don't bring anything new to the gameplay and it gets kinda boring. BUT I can't give this game above 0 because the plot is so contrived, nosense and disrespectful that it's impossible, as a great fan of the first game, to give this STORY DRIVEN game somewhat credit.

This is not the TLJ or GoT S8 of videogames, this is worse.
The plot is a mess from the beginning because it's a dreadful retcon of the first game ending, saying that the Fireflies would have created a vaccine and saved the world, when it's clear throughout the first game that they're just an incompetent and dangerous group of terrorists.
All the og characters are completely different, they range from their true personality to their new one in a second, they're lunatic and make A LOT of stupid decisions, only to make the plot move forward. All the death scenes are so random and meaningless that the player reaches a point where he doesn't care anymore.
There are a lot of new characters and the game tries to make us empathize with each one using a lot of subplots in the span of 20/25 hours, making the complete plot even more contrived.
The message of the game is "revenge bad", but fulfilling one's desire of revenge is ultimately rewarded, because Abby (killer of Joel) gets revenge for her dad (firefly surgeon) and in the end she gets away with it and reunites with the fireflies, while Ellie loses everything and everyone in her path for revenge, and in the end she spares Abby, remaining lonely, defeated and hollow.
If you're a fan of The Last of Us, you will hate this, and you'll come to hate the writers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Basura progresista.

First obviously is Joel's death. But lets say this was a revenge story. What makes the story awful is that it's told almost entirely from Abby's side AFTER she kills Joel (after he saves her life). That makes her instantly completely unlikable, and the impetus is not there to want her to succeed. But lets say you're able to get past that. Then the fact that you almost completely do not ever get to play Ellie any more after the awful trudge with her is over makes the game awful. I'd rather have played Ellie for the fight in the theater.

Then Abby makes herself even MORE unlikeable by wanting to kill a pregnant woman. Whereas when Ellie did that... she did not realize it until after Mel was dead, and Ellie did so in self defense, while Dina was already completely unconscious when Abby was going to kill Dina.

Abby is a villain who Neil Druckman wants us to think of as a hero. joel was an antihero turned outright hero who Neil Druckman wants us to think of as a villain, because apparently Neil Druckman thinks it's fine to kill children if there's a chance of healing other people from the death. That's literally a nazi scientist mentality.

But lets say you were able to even get past all that, and you get to the very end of the game..... If it ended with Ellie being able to put the past behind her in the farmhouse and live happily ever after with Dina and the baby, I would have said 'Okay, not a great game but not a garbage fire of awful'

What makes it a garbage fire of awful is what happens afterwards. Ellie becomes a straight on psycho completely out of character, who saves Abby and Lev, JUST So she can personally fight Abby who no longer wants to fight, to the point that Ellie threatens to murder Lev in order to make Abby fight. As if Ellie is some sort of horrible villain. Somehow the audience knows the character of Ellie a lot better than Neil Druckman's warped sensibilities can manage. Ellie could have killed Abby on the cross. Or she could have come to the idea that revenge will not bring Joel back, AND THEN FREED ABBY and let her go.

But no, instead it's a disjointed, amateurish mess. She frees abby so she can kill abby then doesnt kill abby at the last moment for literally no reason. If she's going to spare Abby for no reason, she could have done it before having her fingers bitten off to permanently mar her while Abby gets off scot free.

And even if you say 'But Abby had most of her friends killed' - yeah well so did Ellie. Jesse and Joel were both killed by Abby, and Tommy is permanently disabled because of Abby. This was a revenge story without the revenge. You play a villain, fighting against a hero, and the villain wins for no good reason at all.

Neil Druckman does not know how to write a story. Whatever lightning in a bottle he had with the first game and the DLC is gone here, although I did read in an interview how he thought that people would think 'Abby realizes that Joel lied and hates him for it' - when NONE of the audience read it that way, which make me wonder if someone else wrote the story and Neil Druckman just is a crappy director who doesnt know how to read nuance.

I will not be playing TLOU 3 if it comes out. I consider this to have been a tremendous waste of money and I almost quit the game after Joel died, then after I saw I had to play Abby. My only hope was eventually I'd play Ellie again, and I'd get to have fun with her as the far better developed and likeable character. And I was robbed of that.. You don't even get Ellie getting to go back to live happily ever after with Dina after sparing Ellie, because apparently Dina doesnt mind her friend Jesse being shot in the face and murdered. She wouldnt wait for Ellie to return - she instead packs up the entire farm and leaves. What.... do they have U-Haul in the apocalypse? WTF?!

I will not play any more Naughty Dog games if Neil Druckman has anything to do with them, regardless of how good the graphics and animation are. Even if the gameplay is good (and for this game the gameplay was mediocre honestly). Because the Last of Us games are STORY driven games. If the story sucks, then the game sucks.

    And here... the story sucked.

Not even 2 hours in and Joel gets killed in the absolutely stupidest way possible (yes I've seen the leaks so I knew it was coming)! But even still the way they did it was terrible!!! Ellie is set on revenge the whole game and at the very end of the game SHE DOESN'T KILL ABBEY?!?! What was the point of making this game or even writing this game?! What a waste of 7 years of waiting. Neil **** should never write again especially for this series. It has no place for him. Expand

    horrible story .
especialy the way it ends . It is simply disappointing and pointless . The Abby character looks so weird and stupid and you can't symphatize with her at all .
They just ruined this beautiful game by SJW nonesense. this is not a game anymore it is just a propaganda with an stupid story .

You don't have to be homophobic to not like the story. Unfortunately, Naughty Dog screwed up the storytelling.

Holy **** the last of us 1 bad the greatest storytelling in all of gaming, but this, after playing the game for 8 hours is one of the worse if not the worst storytelling ever. I'd rather play Mario for the story than this piece of **** game Expand

Killing main beloved character is cheap and unprofessional move. And then through the same cliches, justifying the killer’s actions, while forcing the player to spend another 20 hours playing on this character, is already simply disgusting. Expand

This is how you ruin a beloved series of games...Usually when you make a game and it's loved by everyone, even considered a masterpiece you, as a game developer, would want to make the sequel based on the first game but better...you know don't change what is not broken, make it better but keep the spirit...Nope, none of that. Naughty Dog just went in the completely opposite direction, forgetting what made the first game so good, confident that whatever they will make, the fans will just accept it and praise it. It happens that this is not the case, many of us don't like it, whether is the gameplay, which is good but nothing special, like they promoted it to be; the story which is like day and night compared to the first game; the characters of which the majority are plain and boring (including the other protagonist)...The only good thing I can say about it is that the graphics are beautiful, they truly are.
I can go in depth about the political nature of this game and how "certain" persons influenced it in a bad way but it would take too long...let's just say that they focused more on other things and less on what made the first game a success..
That said...I'm not on the side of critics, which blindly gave 10/10s or the people that gave it 0/10 out of rage and the feeling of betrayal...and though I feel like that too I'm just gonna rate this based on the points I made...I feel like this is a 4/10...nothing more and nothing less.

The last of Us Part 2 doesn’t care about the characters it established in the first game and barely cares about the characters they introduce in this game. An integral plot point occurs because characters forget who they were in the last game and how they’ve survived for 20+ years. Antagonist characters have weak motivations and don’t make for compelling villains/characters. Joel and Ellie made the first game and there’s barely an hour or 2 of them together in a potentially 30+ hour game. You can obviously tell these are the best scenes in this game. False advertising and no payoff at the end... this game ruins the legacy the last game left. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start off right away by saying this: I have owned The Last of Us since it was first released. I have replayed the game nearly 20 times, and sometimes when I'm bored I'll just replay random chapters. I've watched, and rewatched, Youtube playthroughs. That's how much I love it. Joel and Ellie are my favorite characters in any video game. So when the second game was announced, you can imagine how excited I was. When the first trailer was released, you can imagine how excited I was. With each step closer to the release, my anticipation grew. I preordered the special edition, prepared to spend $200 on this game. THAT is how much I love TLoU.

When the leaks first surfaced, I put my foot down and refused to look. Naughty Dog created Uncharted and TLoU, my favorite video games EVER. I refused to doubt them. A week or so passed, and I'd successfully avoided spoilers. Then I saw it. Stupidly, I scrolled through a comment section, and my eyes caught on the words: "Joel dies". My heart sank and I immediately kept scrolling, trying to convince myself that I hadn't seen it, that it was probably fake anyway, that I could simply move past it. But here's the thing... when I say Joel and Ellie are my favorite characters, the emphasis is on Joel. I. Love. Joel. So naturally, my imagination started racing. "Do I want to spend $200 on the game if Joel dies?"

So I took the leap. And I will forever be grateful that I did. Within 2 minutes of reading the leaks I was crying, cancelling my preorder and unable to fall asleep that night. I cannot describe to you the heartbreak and rage that I felt at discovering what would happen to my beloved characters. That was weeks ago, and I've since cooled down. Before this game was even released, I mourned for Joel, went through the stages of grief. So now, at the time of release, I'm no longer raging - I'm just disappointed.

Now I've been watching playthroughs, and the graphics are as beautiful as expected. I live in Seattle, and even THAT isn't enough to get me to buy this game. Do you know how excited I was, when I first heard the game would be in my home city?! The idea of exploring Seattle with Joel and Ellie was MINDBLOWING. Now, it's an afterthought. Exploring Seattle within this graphically stunning video game isn't enough. I will not ever be purchasing this game. I will never even buy it used. Now let me explain why.

I believe in the freedom to create whatever art you want to create. I, however, am also free to despise that art. And I do. If the story was true to the characters and felt honest, things would be different. But it's not, so here we are.

They destroy the very foundation of the characters that we love. If you think for one second that Joel Miller would trust a group of strangers enough to follow them into a closed space, and let his guard down enough to give his real name then you DO NOT KNOW JOEL. End of story. If you think for one second that Joel wouldn't have pulled out his gun after being shot in the leg, you DO NOT KNOW JOEL. Joel, fundamentally as a character, at his core, would never follow a group of strangers when he's completely outnumbered and knows that he has a bad reputation. Because of this, his entire death scene loses all credibility.

Let me be clear and say that I'm fine with Joel dying. His death could have been a devastating, beautifully done moment. Instead, it's fundamentally untrue to his character and only serves as shock value. Instead of inspiring the player, it leaves you with nothing but bitterness and coldness - toward the game itself. I've watched so many people become distant, cold, bitter, uninterested, and detached, during and after the death. I don't believe Joel would have EVER allowed himself to be in that position, therefore the entire scene feels empty, untrue, and forced. Joel is a survivor.

Now since I have limited characters, I will skip to the end. Throughout the game you/Ellie kill thousands of people. And then suddenly, once you get to Abby, the end goal of the entire storyline... you get... nothing. Suddenly, after killing so many people, this one kill isn't worth it. Suddenly, killing gets you nowhere and shame on us for killing all those people just to kill Abby. Ellie is sad, revenge got her nowhere, it didn't bring Joel back and so on and so on. Abby, the ONE person in the game who successfully got her revenge, disappears into the sunset.

Newsflash, Naughty Dog: WE KNOW KILLING IS BAD. KILLING BAD. WE KNOW.

Guess what: IT'S A VIDEO GAME. You go through these games, generally, defeating enemies. Usually, by killing them. That's why we upgrade weapons, build our arsenals. It's at the core of these types of video games. So for you to use the boss battle to prove a point about "killing bad. Ellie realizes now. Not before, but now." Is laughable. Any player investment that survived Joel's death is killed off for good with an unsatisfying, anticlimactic ending. In the end, it was all for nothing.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
