This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the first game two weeks before this one. I just never got around to it. I didn't realize until after the fact that it was a ps3 game. What they achieved there is nothing short of remarkable. Though I wasn't as moved as much as others, probably because I was pretty aware of some major beats before I even played, I would still place it as one of the top games.

With TLOU:P2 NaughtyDog did it again.

Though I didn't have to wait as long as most fans of the first game, the anticipation was just as high the closer I got to that midnight release. I consumed every bit of content released over the years that I had been missing or went over my head since I missed the first game. Part 2 Trailers, Gameplay Reels, Interviews, etc. Just so I could get up to speed. This was great for me since the first game was so fresh in my mind. Watching the trailers were already gripping. I could tell the story was already taking us to places I never expected to go. The clear theme of revenge was at the forefront of all the material, and Ellie was clearly taking center stage this time around. I kept wondering: What would be the cause of Ellie's rage? I could only come up with one answer.

    Joel is going to die.

Spoilers: That's exactly what happened. Despite having expected as much while going through the promotional content, I will admit that this was not something that I wanted to happen; especially during the act itself. I felt just like Ellie, wanting to scream out at the screen and the characters themselves to stop. Don't do this. Don't take him away from us. We need him.

Then it happened, and I was distraught. Spent. Filled with hate. Just like Ellie. From that moment forward I was on board with this revenge plot. I wanted to get back at these people as much as Tommy and Ellie; maybe even more so. Yet something kept bugging at me as I tore through the streets of Seattle to exact my revenge. Why had the developers put us in Abby's shoes early on in the game?

I got my answer as I kept playing. I hated the writers even more. I didn't want to play as Abby. I didn't want to empathize with her story or her character. I didn't want to feel for her more than I felt for Ellie, nor more than my hatred for what she had done. I especially didn't want to be rooting for her when we went up against Ellie in that cinema. Yet, NaughtyDog made me do it. They put me in her shoes and I felt everything I was supposed to, and I hated myself for it.

Nothing in the first game ever moved me as much as this game did. Where by the end of The Last of Us Part II I was conflicted. I did not know who I wanted to root for. I just wanted Ellie to stop. I wanted to tell her that it wasn't worth it. I wanted her to enjoy the life she has been given. That final flashback with Joel, and on to those final few scenes of the game, left me feeling so sad, hopeful, hurt, and fulfilled at the same time. So many emotions to even list.

And I think the game deserves every emotion it elicits.

TLOU:P2 is unrelenting. Many have talked about the brutal nature of the game, it's characters, and the world they live in, and what it takes for the player to get through it. It's not easy. Revenge is hard. Hate is difficult. There were times where it weighed on my heart so much that I just wanted a breather. I wasn't sure how I could continue like this. That's when NaughtyDog reminds you of the same hope we have for humanity. They give you moments that are the most beautiful and breathtaking than I have ever seen in a video game. You are, at the same time, shown what you are fighting for, remembering what these characters have lost, and longing for a time before certain people were taken away from us.

This game is so good at making you wrestle with what you're doing it probably should be a crime. In fact, a lot of people have considered it such, and there's even a petition to remake the game already floating around the web. People are mad. They think the developers are hypocritical to put us in situations where we have no choice but to kill in a game that ultimately doesn't want you to. I think that's simplifying things a little too much. There's a lot to unpack with TLOU, and if it wasn't for the emotional journey we wouldn't have a story worth exploring.

Moreover, people are really mad about Joel, and this is what I want to say about that. Having played the first game recently, Joel was not the most compelling character. In fact, what made Joel loveable at all was what Ellie brought out of him. The story of TLOU (part 1) was of Joel reclaiming his own humanity. Where we find him in Part 2, evident in the flashbacks, is that because of Ellie, he was able to find contentment and happiness because of this humanity. Ellie no longer needed him, but we find that all along, he needed her. Overall, his story was done.

Ellie's, in contrast, was just beginning, and now we know who she is without Joel.
The same is true with you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanna say this game is a Masterpiece just by the fact how people are arguing and hating it. Above all things I think our problem here starts with Joel being too badass and Ellie being too cool and cute in the first game. As Joel says in the ambush with Ellie, he had been on both sides. He was once with those we killed violently in the first game. He was once what were our enemies in the first game. If he was on the "other side" he was probably killing people that we wouldn't consider our enemies?? After that we have the hospital scene. Joel gets crazy and goes guns blazing throughout the hospital, kills unarmed doctors and nurses and prevent the cure from being created. Not only did he do this he also had that ultimate lie at the end. Nevertheless we all depicted Joel as a true hero! (myself included, I had allegedly said "Joel is the best character in the video game world" but why? Did naughty dog drawn us so deep into Joel's life? Seeing Joel being killed like that was too much too digest. No character would never feel like Joel again. Ellie is no longer that cute cool girl. She's still haunted by Joel's lie. Furthermore we get to play with the one who killed our hero. And it did felt like "despite all the effort to show Abby's life is also hard and not more special than anybody else", it did. In the beggining it is unconfortable to play with her. No matter what good deeds she's up too. She's the one who killed Joel and deserves to die. It was like Naughty Dog was forcing a character into us. But it wasn't. And that's the part where the game is revolucionary. It didn't come to please, it came to shock and make us wonder. We got too attached to the first game and to Joel and young Ellie. The first game leaves us with some questions and opinions, but despite all the bad things Joel had done, he was still depicted as a hero and people didn't even have the chance to play with him. Turns out the way the story unfolded was the story where Joel was no hero and we weren't prepared for that. I still give this game a 10. It went further to a next level of gaming. For those complaining about "swj" and "agenda", I'm sorry for you. I'm really sorry the prejudice is strong enough to prevent you from enjoying a game where women are the most important characters. And don't you think is weird that not even in a fictional VIDEO GAME women can't have a moment? Were women the problem? Or because they didn't have big **** If you can't tolerate women, if you aren't able to tolerate different gender on a FICTIONAL GAME, go get help. Expand

I love it, and I'm still processing all my emotions over it. But yeah the game, the ending it's beautiful, powerful, and very HUMAN. The entire story is wrapped around the concepts of cause and effect/confronting the consequences for your actions. Not everyone is going to agree with it, not everyone is going to like it, but frankly that's their choice. And I'm happy it exists.

I LOVED the first game. I've played it start-to-finish probably a dozen times. Naughty Dog chose to go in a very different direction with the characters and story structure than I think most fans were expecting. After finishing the game, and having many ups and downs along the way in my own experience with the story, I can say that this game absolutely deserves the 10/10 ratings it is receiving for what the game actually is. I totally understand why some people are upset about the approach they took, and how it violated their expectations of what this game should be. But if you can get past the initial shock that it's not what most Last of Us fans expected, Naughty Dog has created something incredible and unique, and this story is something that will stick with me for a very long time. But moving on to my honest opinion about this game in particular: I think the characters really stood out to me. As in any Naughty Dog game, this one is also very character-driven. Ultimately, this is a story about revenge, hate, and violence, but also about redemption and forgiveness. Yes, I agree that this theme has been heavily used in every entertainment medium, but they rarely do it justice. I can happily say that The Last Of Us Part II has not did justice to the theme itself, but also did stay true to the world, the character development, and the hidden symbology behind this perfectly crafted cyclic narrative (which I will not spoil, but it has to do with the ending itself). All the narrative beats fit perfectly with each other, and it always brings other elements of surprise, right when you think you know what to expect for the ending, another story beat hits you in the face and changes your perspective. Also, you should never go to part II expecting the same thing you experienced in part I. Although that same feeling can be felt through other types of relationships, and some perfect flashbacks, the first one is very different from the second one. Lastly, I just want to say that I think this game will not only define how we all experience video games in the future, but also define how they are engineered, thought, and its story will be discussed and debated for many years to come, just like we did for the first one.

PS: Don’t be the dick who gives 0’s without experiencing it.

This game took me 27 hours without seriously looking for artifacts/trading cards on my first gameplay. All the negative comments were based on leaks that were petty, out of context, and some of them untrue or misleading.

ND didn't make this story to be a fairytale filled with happy endings and perfect relationships. They said they were going to make this game as realistic as possible, and that didn't just mean the graphics. I loved Joel just as much as anyone else, but with every story, there's multiple sides. He killed people to save Ellie... But that means he killed someone's father, brother, wife, friend for his OWN gain. They developed Abby in such a great way. She was such a well rounded character, and I loved the fact that you were obligated to go after Ellie. It was uncomfortable and difficult... But you were forced to see all sides of Ellie and how other people view her. She may be our hero, but to many other people she's a murderer that took away their family. Absolute 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. FIRST PARAGRAPH HAS SPOILERS This game is the game of the year for sure, it has a great story even making the player sympathize with Joel’s killer and if you don’t, you surely sympathize with Lev and consequently you don’t want Abby to die. You end this game completely destroyed because you don’t know if you want Ellie to win or Abby to win and you feel what the characters are dealing with for example when you see Abby getting to the surgery room and seeing her dad dead, you feel bad for her, when Ellie is in Santa Barbara, you see that she is broken, you see that she doesn’t care about anything anymore and she even has things written on her book saying that she regrets going to Santa Barbara and wanted to turn back.

The gameplay is better then the previous one, because the new features that were added (crouching and dodging) work perfectly and makes the gameplay look real and with very human movements, when you play it you actually say “that’s what I would do” Gameplay 10/10 The graphics, facial expressions and the ambience are the best ever made
10/10 The story is great and it has a meaning, which is something the first one didn’t have, because although it is also a great story, it’s a very well made genetical adventure story, TLOU2 in may opinion has a story that is slightly better then the previous one because of that, this sequel is a lot darker then the first one and I think that was a great change since it reflects what goes on in both protagonist’s minds, but the only problem of the story was that. It was a really well written story and it’s only not a 10/10 because of what I’m going to say on the next paragraph Story 9/10 Actually I would give this game a 9.7 because there are some minimal details that were unnecessary such as Mel being pregnant, I thought that was only to shock the player since her not being pregnant wouldn’t change nothing in the story and also the fact that they had to make Joel kinda stupid to

Who didn't really understand the first part - which is OK - should definitely avoid the second part. Gameplay is OK, but there are other titles that do most things much better. This is not enough to enjoy the game.
But who - like me - after the credits of the first part half an hour after the end of the credits still sat speechless on the sofa and wondered what just happened and had to process the emotional rollercoaster ride of the last minutes will find a worthy continuation in the second part.

The established world is meaningfully expanded and captivates with breathtaking variety concerning the artistic realization. Not only the graphics are "awesome", but also the choice of locations and their extremely detailed elaboration is fascinating.

The story answers most of the open questions of the first part, but also dares to take new paths with unconventional and courageous steps in the demands on the player. It's not a game like many others and dares a lot of new things - a player who gets involved in the game (especially emotionally) will find a pearl that is rare. But TLoU2 is definitely not a game for players who just want to be entertained. It is a further development of "video games" - some like it, some don't. The days when the whole community was feverishly waiting for a title and loved the game equally are over. Long gone.

TLoU2 may or may not please you. The game forces the player not to like it, it's up to the player to find out.But if you didn't question the first part and didn't get the real masterpiece of the first part, TLoU2 will torture you. Whoever has opened up this level of the first part for himself - have fun! ... or good entertainment? Cruelly good experience? I don't know what to wish the inclined player. Only one thing you have to bring along for sure - time. If you play the game for an hour in the evening and stretch it over weeks, you will probably not be able to experience the full spell of the game.

    Many thanks to Naughty Dog!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty Dog's finest work yet! It might not be what everyone wanted out of it, but it's use of storytelling and how it explores themes on revenge, forgiveness, morality and redemption is well crafted. It's definitely a game that is meant to be diverse for people who were fans of the first game's story, but this is a whole new story and the only way people will enjoy it is by taking the time to understand both sides of the situation that goes on among these characters.

Although the game might be polarized by some fans, people might hopefully start to appreciate it more as time goes by. I for one believe these Last of Us games will go down in history and be considered one of the greatest video games ever made. If there is a Part 3, this game might even be considered The Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. I am definitely eager to see if Naughty Dog will decide to give this franchise one last game to not only complete it as video game trilogy, but to Ellie's story overall. This game alone proves that she is the true protagonist of these games.

The Last of Us Part II is, in my opinion, a masterpiece and probably the greatest and most beautiful piece of video game storytelling I have ever experienced in my life. I was emotionally moved by this game in a way no other game ever came close.

Since the story is obviously the most controversial part of the game, I'll talk about the technical aspects of the game first.

On a base PS4, the game runs incredibly smooth. I have experienced no FPS drops during my playthrough and encountered only one non-game breaking glitch (I have experienced several crashes during the first several hours, but after restarting my console the game ran perfectly so it probably wasn't a problem with the game itself). The graphics in this game are also absolutely breathtaking. The apocalypse has never looked more beautiful. The sound design is also perfectly done (fair warning: I know practically nothing about sound design and mixing, so for me it basically comes down to whether the game sounded good). This game is easily the most immersive game I have ever played. There are so many tiny details in the world that really make you feel like every single room you enter in the game has a story of it's own.

Let's talk about gameplay. The gameplay is improved in every possible way from the first game. In combat and stealth sections there are some really great new mechanics, like dodging hits in hand-to-hand combat, or going prone (is that the right way of saying that?) and sneaking in the grass or under cars. You can now also move through narrow cracks in walls, and there are some very welcomed rope mechanics (which seem to have been borrowed from Uncharted 4, not that I have a problem with that). The gameplay and movement just generally feel smoother than in the previous game. The AI (of both your enemies and companions) in the game also seems way more intelligent and advanced than in the previous game, especially on the higher difficulties (I played on hard).

I think that we can all agree that all the developers, coders and designers in Naughty Dog who worked their asses off should get massive respect.

Before I discuss the story, I just want to quickly acknowledge the amazing soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla. The soundtrack is incredibly atmospheric and really helps to immerse you in the story, characters and the world. There's not much else I can say about it, everyone knows that Gustavo Santaolalla is an absolute master at his craft.

Okay. Let's talk about the story, Easily the most divisive part of the game. Some love it and some think it completely destroys the characters. The situation is not unlike a certain highly divisive eighth movie in a series about space wizards (a movie which I happen to love). I should probably start by stating that if your complaints are anything other than "SJWs ruined the game with forced diversity" or something along those lines, I can absolutely understand the criticisms of the story, and why people would have a problem with it. I think your opinion will mainly depend on whether you can accept something that happens fairly early in the game, and whether you can sympathize with a certain character (I'm trying to remain as spoiler-free as possible). Personally, I found the story to be an incredibly compelling and moving tale about the cycle of violence and the nature of revenge. In my opinion, the story builds upon the story in the first game and feels like a natural continuation, making it worthy of being called "part 2" of the story. Every character in the game, both old and new, are all extremely sympathetic and likable, although some will not seem that way right from the start. Finally, all the voice and motion capture performances in this game are absolutely top notch (Troy Baker as Joel, Jeffrey Pierce as Tommy, Shannon Woodward as Dina, Stephen A. Chang as Jesse and Laura Bailey as Abby are all fantastic) and bring the characters and their relationships to life (especially the relationship between Ellie and Dina), but I especially want to single out Ashley Johnson, who should receive every single award possible for her absolutely incredible and heartbreaking performance as Ellie.

    10/10, Absolute masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From the very start of this game i enjoyed it, the game is dark, gritty and very emotional. Joel's death hits like a truck and throughout the game you can sense the loss in Eliie. Ellie's thirst for revenge it something you can get behind, well, for people who played the first game. And as the story unravels and you learn of Abby's reasoning you can start to understand her reasoning. As for the technical parts of the game, the graphics are top notch, the combat feels like an improved version of TLOU1, which i loved. The music in this game will give you serious nostalgia for the first game and some of the songs in it will get you emotional and in some cases, may even make you shed a few tears. one thing i wasn't keen on was Abby's section, especially after what she had done to Joel but i think that was intentional. All in all this is a great game that is deserving of all the praise (and some of the critiques) but not deserving of all the review bombs from people who claim to hate the ending even on day 1 of release. No game is perfect and all have their flaws but this to me is one of the closest you can get to an actual 10/10 so that is the score i will give it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not about Revenge.
This game is about the lack of forgiveness and the cry for blood.
This game is about (for the most part) everybody out to do good, but convinced of that self image always ending up attacking others and seeking revenge on others.

There is a deeper layer to this when the creators say "we feel like this story needed to be told".
There is a deeper layer to almost every character of some importance or power being a woman.
There is a deeper layer to almost non of them doing any better than the men.
There is a deeper layer to almost every man dominant in the story being in the flashbacks.
There is a deeper layer to Elli pretty much beginning the game with calling someone a "biggot".
There is a deeper layer in players/fans calling this game out for being "made for SJWs".

Among these layers are the facts that we are all just human, just because men are out of power (or in case of this game, dead) will not make the world a better place, women will light it on fire just as much. And there is also the fact that people will feel trigged, will start to look for a fight, because at first the woman dominated world with a lesbian protagonist that replaces the man sounds like tagged on to please "SJW" and the Media (Oscar bait in the movie world i suppose). But it's not. You got to look at these deeper layers. It's very well crafted.

The biggest downside of the game is it's gameplay. It's great, it's fun, it's well don, it looks good... but sometimes you just want to be in the story, see what happens next and instead you have to cut through buildings for the next couple of hours. It kinda gets in the way. I can't wait to see what HBO dos with it's adaptation. This could become what "The Walking Dead" should have been.

It's a great ride, try it... and see if you are willing to forgive, willing to not jump at the triggers the writers put in this game just for you to bark, just for you to go looking for a fight (albeit a less deadly one). This is a masterpiece.

    Cons:
    - story
    - character design
    - character development
    - plot holes

So, even with all the pros this game is really really bad. It makes NO sense that Ellie act how she acts in certain parts of the game but that isnt even the biggest thing about why its bad.
    The reason is: character development.
If you kill one of the most beloved characters early in the game (Joel) and want to bring in new main playable characters like Abby, you HAVE to bring WAY more backstory in order to make the player feel with her.
    I mean she KILLED Joel!
How do you make the player like her? Bring more and more backstory before she does that. Let the players play 2-10h as Abby when she was a child or whatever. The backstory of her is basically told in 10minutes and then her dad is being killed. Thats it? And now I have to feel with her and understand why she killed Joel?
    Hell no!
That is weak story telling. Really really weak.

Then there are all the other new characters. Nobody is likeable. Like really. They all feel empty. They are only shells without any meaning.

This game is just bad. Do yourself a favor and dont buy it. The reviews the journalists wrote are either bought by Sony or ND or are heavily politicly influenced. Sad thing is: because of that same journalists will most likely make this game GOTY. What a joke.

Safe your money and buy something else.

And last but not least: this is technically a very good game but the story/characters is/are SO bad it just doesnt matter how well the rest is done.

You want a good revenge story? Watch "Oldboy" then you know how to make a good revenge story that shocks everybody to their core.

This game right here? Its garbage.

Amazing game, with a almost perfect narrative. If this was a movie, it would probably be on Oscar. Great direction, excellent graphics and insane real characters. Video games need to improve their level after this game. It is already in history!

The Last of Us: Part II -

So far the games been fantastic, the visuals splendid, game play similar to its predecessor but equally as good. The talking point for the negative reviews seem to be regarding the "story", which I believe is captivating and suspenseful, creating a great sense of adventure.
It's easy to see the "story" in poor taste if you're relying on just leaks or clips of certain scenes, which almost takes the scene out of context. It seems a bit unfair to judge the game on that basis without giving it a chance.
Anyway, that is just something I wanted to get off my chest. Hope you all have a good day.

Absolutely amazing game from start to finish. Please don't listen to these silly people. Characters are great, story is great, gameplay is great and looks beautiful. Would recommend. I'd say play part 1 first though or look up a movie version or something. Go have fun!

In many ways, Abbey walks out of the ending more positively than Ellie.

    Loved it all.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
