The Last of Us was built on a strong story, very well told, with a sensational script, which made a deep connection between the player and the characters. At The Last of Us 2 there is simply no logic in the events, it seems that there is no script, and they simply ended the narrative to defend a political / social agenda. As a fan it hurts me to say that, but they ended up with The Last of Us.

Womp womp. Its comes down to story, your a passanger in a narrative car crash with no control. Some people will like it, a lot more will hate it, Im the latter. Rental if you wanna experience this dissapointed for yourself. Even that would be a waste of money.

Graphically looks excellent. Gameplay is mediocre; while in a battle with enemies, it’s pretty good. When you’re doing anything other than engaging enemies, it’s boring. I guess that’s what the game wants, but it makes for a miserable experience. Doesn’t help that the dev engages in character dissonance to force fit his story. Painful storytelling. Buy this in a couple months in a $5 bin. Slightly below average as a game and an awful AAA title. Expand

This is a beautiful game period. Design and attention to detail was flawless, the fight sequences were great as well. I love TLOU so I can’t hate too much, but it is a flawed game. What made me give it less than a ten is the Abby part, way too long. Somethings in the plot I wish were different. I love the inclusion of the LGBTQ and the transgender communities into the game as well.

Anyone who has played the first game MUST pick this up. There’s a lot of bad press on this one, people are mad the story didn’t go the way “they wanted”. The way that it's forces you to shift perspectives and gain empathy for characters who are normally more one dimensional is pretty genius. That and the very grim, in-your-face depiction of cycles of vengeance and brutality at it's most mf'ing brutal (You're supposed to feel that way btw. It's emotional manipulation, like all entertainment.) I think if you liked the first game you'll like this. It's more of the same...uh...mostly.

On brand for The Last Of Us series, it presents a dark, morally grey glimpse into a horrifying world. Violence is necessary, but also emotionally punished. Loss is commonplace and often leads to cycles of revenge. The nuanced thematics separate this game from others of the genre. It is incredibly effective at making the player connect with these characters who struggle so profoundly. The one issue I had with the game thematically was its anti-violence was achieved through gratuitous violence throughout. That said, it is difficult to achieve such a strong effect without this contradiction. The gameplay is fun, but there is a reason it has a reputation for questionable stealth mechanics and “idiotic” AI. Often predictable and occasionally baffling, the AI typically has a great deal of difficulty finding the player whilst in plain view. The gunplay can feel clunky as well, though feels very satisfying when making impressive shots. At times, the clunky gun mechanics feels immersive. I’m sure I would have trouble switching between various weapons in any situation, including an apocalyptic wasteland teeming with deadly zombies and deadlier tribes of violent humans. Most of the time, the gun mechanics would be frustrating, though not game ruining. The visuals fluctuate between beautiful at worst and stunning at best. The imagining of urban environments in the process of being retaken by nature is wondrous and haunting. A great deal of time was spent during my play through just taking in all the intricate details of the scenery. A game earns high marks for visual storytelling when one often stumbles upon scenes and can tell what happened before the player arrived with no words needed. The Last Of Us Part 2 is a force of imagination, thematics, visual storytelling, and excitement. It falls into familiar pitfalls other stealth based games struggle to overcome, but ultimately provides and incredibly compelling 20-30 hours of gameplay and leaves the player with a great deal to contemplate upon completion. As a comment to all the negative ratings, I get it. Some people just find it hard to empathize. Especially today, where the story is always 'Us' vs. 'Them'. I disagree with these people. I especially disagree with those who also hate the fact that the characters happen to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Also, it's not an issue that they killed a character. No one is invincible. It's incredibly stupid to believe that just because a character was popular, they can't die. This is hypocritical. Why should the producers appeal to the cheapness of popularity? The videogame dared to be bold, and they did a great job.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this game without any spoilers and expected it to be good, but not as good as it actually was. I understand the anger and frustration people feel with this game, but I actually feel like over time people will begin to appreciate the true beauty and genius of it. In this world, things can happen in an instant. You can never expect something to go perfectly, and this case Joel’s death. Along with Jessie, etc. The irony of Ellie and abby’s stories being almost identical is incredible. It sends a message of reality and different perspectives! They both did the right thing, going after revenge for their fathers right? In this story neither of them are in the right. It’s funny because I absolutely adore Joel in every shape And form. But he wasn’t the best man in the last of us 1. He was older. Softer and comfortable in the second one. He changed, but it wasn’t all puppies and rainbows. From an unbiased stand point you cannot deny the absolute legendary this game is. I LOVE the perspective, I LOVE that naughty dog didn’t just give the players everything perfect and what they dreamed of. Because life isn’t like that, especially in that world. Just breathtaking and a beautiful new outlook!! Expand

I’m pretty numb towards the writers of the last of us 2 right now, and have been since I saw Joel die. Why was this even brought up at the table? Which genius had that bright idea? Cuz it’s dumb! Every fan out there wanted Joel and Ellie to fight more monsters and grow into a deeper father daughter type relationship. Not this. Nobody asked for this. Nobody wanted what we got instead. Nobody. I hope someone learned something from this butt plunging, no soap, disheartening taste naughty dog left to all it’s “previous” fans. The game sold big numbers cuz fans thought they were getting Joel and Ellie back for another fantastic adventure. Had people have known what was really about to happen sales numbers would look very different. Then they make me use the very character that kills Joel... which I didn’t want any part of! I had to pause the game and think about if I really was gonna continue or not. I asked myself some very hard personal questions about my level of forgiveness towards people and if I was willing to go through with trying to understand Abbey’s side of the story. I didn’t want to. But I chose to stuff my emotions and see what naughty dog wanted me to feel. Fine, let’s go. Abbey grew on me and I started to feel her pain. Thanks for teaching me that, really. I’m better for it. Then you make me fight Ellie??? NO, I won’t. I don’t want to. Why!? Wtf! What’s wrong with y’all? I don’t want to fight her, I love her like a sister from 5 years ago, remember. What the hell is wrong with you people? Ok, so I can’t progress in the story unless I try to kill Ellie, so FINE we have to do it I guess. Now at this point I’m playing the game with nothing left to feel about Joel, or Ellie or Abbey cuz I’m too scared to like any characters anymore! So I’m just pushing buttons to get over the story by now. Maybe my love for artwork or the console itself will help. So I get to the end and abbey is looking like a crackhead but she still strong enough to go toe to toe with Ells. Whatever. It’s finally over and Ellie lost her girlfriend over for nothing. Water her time going to look for fake revenge. At least give me a reason to like somebody somewhere! Damn! Not even a little! Just rape me. Take my money and run. I haven’t felt this used since Glenn was killed of from walking dead! I’m not buying another game by naughty dog. Not after the way they treated my loyalty to their characters. I bought PlayStation avatars of the characters I loved, paid more money for the amped up version, and for what? To get it all taken away. Fool me once... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite the extremely polarizing reviews of "The Last of Us: Part 2" I decided to buy and play it anyway, being a hugggeeee fan of the first game I couldn't miss out on this. My opinion is that this is absolutely a 10/10 game. It is hands down one of the most phenomenal pieces of storytelling to ever hit the gaming industry. It was an emotional roller coaster of love, sadness, empty revenge, and self realization. I would also be remiss if i did not mention incredible voice acting that puts much of the acting we see on tv to shame. The connections to the characters that are built make you feel every gut wrenching emotion or glimmer of happiness they feel. Also worth mentioning that this game has some of the most impressive graphics and facial animation I've ever seen on a console game. Everything about this masterpiece comes together nicely

It seems most of the people who didn't like game are truly missing the point of the game. This isn't a game about revenge, its a game about people who have lost sight of themselves and moral values, but ultimately are reminded of who they really are, unfortunately at a significant cost. This game shows us that revenge is not what its chalked up to be. Take a second to actually put yourself in Abbys shoes, the bloodlust she felt is not too different from how many feel about Joel. We lost Joel, yes....and it sucked but its what MADE the game hit so hard. Its clear Abby is on some level remorseful for her actions. She still doesn't sleep well, she struggles to make real connections with people, and is an emotional wreck. But though all this she encounters Lev who helps Abby find herself once again, even when she is at risk of her darkest moment, about to kill a pregnant woman (Dina) who would have just been collateral damage in this situation, and then backs off. The hardest part about this is watching Ellie make all the same mistakes as Abby on her revenge quest, while the audience knows full well that it wont solve her problems, whether they will admit it or not and despite how we all feel about Joel. In the end when Abby is spared, it was only when Ellie hit absolute rock bottom that she realized the error of her ways.....taking an incredible toll on her spirit. The ending was perfect. People interpret it alot of different ways, but the absence of Ellie's bracelet (which Dina gave her), while she was in Santa Barbara, and then the fact that she was wearing it again at the end sequence back at the farm, no longer bloodied up, fingers healed, no longer carrying her weapons she had and unconcerned about Dina and JJ's absence shows us a large passing of time and tells me she had already been back to Jackson and just stopped by the farm to say one last final goodbye to her last connection to Joel.....The guitar. At least thats what i'm hopeful for.

The other group of people who didn't like the game are reading too deeply into their own bigoted views and what they perceive to be propaganda. *big eye roll* just enjoy the damn game, no one is shoving their values down your throat here. I really thought we were past all that.....

10/10 highly recommend, This wasn't just a game, it was an experience. All great art evokes a myriad of different emotions and opinions about the subject. So if anything the polarizing reviews of this game are proof of what a masterful piece of art this really is! What an absolute pleasure it was to play, I sincerely hope the devs are not discouraged and we get a third.

This game has astonishing attention to details, graphics is just great. And that's actually that. No more memorable characters we loved from the first part. Motivation of characters is broken. Story is broken. Abby is disgusting and was probably first modeled as a male character. 2/10 just for graphics/audio design.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2 could be the single greatest game I have ever played. And heres why.

    Characters:

Most people hate that you have to play as abby because she is the antagonist in this game but i think it was a good idea to make us play as her because it shows the story from 2 different points of view and lets the player decide who's the good guy and who's the bad guy, since neither of them are entirely good or bad. The actors and designers have done an amazing job with bringing these characters to life. I can't think of a game where characters emotions seem as realistic as this, during the scene at the end when Joel wants to cry but tries to hold back while talking to ellie about what he did at the hospital was arguably Troy Bakers best performance in this game. I think that this game does an amazing job with LGBTQ+ representation, unlike other games with LGBTQ+ characters, this accurately shows that they have to deal with homophobia and transphobia and shows that different LGBTQ+ people experience it in different ways (for Ellie and Dina, it was only verbal abuse but for Lev it was an attempted murder)

    Story:

A lot of people didn't like the ending but i do understand why they did it this way. In part one Joel says to ellie "you have no idea what loss is". Now ellie has lost everything and she lost it all for nothing. Most people were upset that Ellie didn't kill Abby but I think this shows that she realizes that revenge will solve nothing because it won't bring Joel back and if she killed Abby, then how is she any better than Abby is.

    Graphics and aesthetics:

The game is absolutely beautiful and i love all the tiny details that are easy to miss like blood diluting in puddles or the animals that show up at random points in the game or even that slight film grain and blur in the distance. While playing, i can't even tell you how many times i had to stop, just to look at how good the game looks. Gameplay:

I've heard so many people argue that "linear gaming is dead" because open world games offer so much more than just the main story, but this game proves that linear games can be better than any open world game. The level design is done so well that there is so much to explore and even though it is linear, there are so many different ways to get through the levels.

    Weapons:

My favorite weapon additions have to be the silencers and abbys crossbow (I would like to be able to use a crossbow as ellie but i do prefer using ellies recurve bow) on the subject of bows, i want to mention that i love how they have improved the bow physics from the first game. Aiming with the bow in the first game was way too easy because it literally showed you the exact path the arrow will travel, in this game, until you attach a sight onto the bow, you need to judge distance by yourself. I also like how in new game+ you get all your weapons from the previous playthrough from the first day in Seattle. In the first game, even with new game+ you had to find the weapons again. I especially like this because now i can use the silenced smg in Seattle. Accessibility: Lots of games have had accessibility features but they were usually limited to alternate controls and a colourblind setting, or you would be required to buy more hardware like alternate controllers. This game takes accessibility to an entire new level and I've heard that a lot of blind people are now able to play it. I think that TLOU2s accessibility features should be the new standard for all games because gaming should be for everyone.

    Conclusion:

The last of us part 2 isn't just a good game but it exceeds the expectations and limits of what a game can be. It's also one of the most important games to ever be made. I've been a gamer since i was a kid and I've played hundreds of different games. The last of us part 2 is by far the best game i have ever played.

First the good: production quality is typical Naughty Dog high. Excellent graphics, sound, and the voice actors and motion capture is great for the material they are given,

The bad: The story. Some may find it interesting. I found it painful. If you enjoy misery, torture, pain and death, this is the game for you. When I play a game I want to be happy, grow with the character, and feel good about it, at least at some point with a turn in the story when the bad turns to good. TLOU2 is a story with an unhappy start, and unhappy middle and an unhappy end, all the while sprinkled with misery, pain and death. There is NO happiness in this game. None. Who likes that? Apparently pro game critics who don't represent the people who play the games.

I don't think this game was review bombed by social justice warriors, at least not primarily. it was legitimately hated by most who played it and then felt miserable after toughing their way through the whole thing.

My rating of 4 is a true score. If it were a 0, I would have quit after an hour but it was at least good enough for me to get all the way through to the depressing ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanna say this game is a Masterpiece just by the fact how people are arguing and hating it. Above all things I think our problem here starts with Joel being too badass and Ellie being too cool and cute in the first game. As Joel says in the ambush with Ellie, he had been on both sides. He was once with those we killed violently in the first game. He was once what were our enemies in the first game. If he was on the "other side" he was probably killing people that we wouldn't consider our enemies?? After that we have the hospital scene. Joel gets crazy and goes guns blazing throughout the hospital, kills unarmed doctors and nurses and prevent the cure from being created. Not only did he do this he also had that ultimate lie at the end. Nevertheless we all depicted Joel as a true hero! (myself included, I had allegedly said "Joel is the best character in the video game world" but why? Did naughty dog drawn us so deep into Joel's life? Seeing Joel being killed like that was too much too digest. No character would never feel like Joel again. Ellie is no longer that cute cool girl. She's still haunted by Joel's lie. Furthermore we get to play with the one who killed our hero. And it did felt like "despite all the effort to show Abby's life is also hard and not more special than anybody else", it did. In the beggining it is unconfortable to play with her. No matter what good deeds she's up too. She's the one who killed Joel and deserves to die. It was like Naughty Dog was forcing a character into us. But it wasn't. And that's the part where the game is revolucionary. It didn't come to please, it came to shock and make us wonder. We got too attached to the first game and to Joel and young Ellie. The first game leaves us with some questions and opinions, but despite all the bad things Joel had done, he was still depicted as a hero and people didn't even have the chance to play with him. Turns out the way the story unfolded was the story where Joel was no hero and we weren't prepared for that. I still give this game a 10. It went further to a next level of gaming. For those complaining about "swj" and "agenda", I'm sorry for you. I'm really sorry the prejudice is strong enough to prevent you from enjoying a game where women are the most important characters. And don't you think is weird that not even in a fictional VIDEO GAME women can't have a moment? Were women the problem? Or because they didn't have big **** If you can't tolerate women, if you aren't able to tolerate different gender on a FICTIONAL GAME, go get help. Expand

The graphics are impressive, perhaps even better than we might see with the next generation of games. The gameplay is somewhat more dinamic, with interesting combos and many variations of execution, and the same goes for the locations, giving the player the feeling that the same goal can be achieve in a dozen different ways.

The story is complicated to judge, precisely because the reason of that which I disliked is not something that can be objectively defended. The plot is complicated at times to understand, as we transition from the protagonists quite a few times, and yet that same concept also contributes for the game to push the player away from that feeling of familiarity players often acquire after ending a game with a sole character.

The story consists on a mix of what was to be expected from the first game if the worst could happen precisely at the right moment, resulting in the death of one of the franchise's most beloved character. At the same time the road in which the player is led ultimately ends in an extremely unsatisfying manner, as we see our beloved character beaten, cut, bruised, frustrated, filled with grief, struggling with some form of PTSD, and still losing her last trace of a family.

This ending is particularly unsatisfying considering the silver lining, if there is one, is shockingly nonequivalent to all the bad things the game shows. In the end, the player is taught two things:

    1) The pursuit of revenge might lead you worse than where you were;
    2) Joel would not want her to do it.

But the issue is that both of those facts are obvious, which contribute deeply to empty the ending of any shock or satisfaction whatsoever.

And this is a fundamental flaw in the writing, as a mere inversion of scenes would have rendered a completely distinct feeling, something akin to a bitter sweet ending. Instead, Ellie gave up on such a precious life to have, especially in a post apocalyptic world, to seek said peace (when it is really just revenge, as far as the game is able to convey).

One can argue that the story is not bad solely because the ending is not satisfying, or that the ending is indeed satisfying, but these two points do not seem to hold, as it either dismisses the idea that the ending of a story is not important, which is absurd, or it reveals an odd pleasure to see a character so loved to end so empty and scarred. One can also say that at the least Ellie left this journey more mature, which is a valid point, but one must also ask this: at what cost, and does that mean the story ends well?

In such a decayed world, the best direction to head would be the opposite, that is, to show that even in darkness there can be light, and even in disadvantage the innocence and purity of a love between father and daughter can triumph, even when he was brutally murdered and she sought, for a while, a path of revenge.

Unless, that is, the creators decided to make a bold move, which is praiseworthy...as long as it gets the landing right, otherwise it is just a stumble.

Unfortunately this a complicated review to make, precisely because it became so divisive and problems can be found on both sides of the reviews. If on one hand prejudice and idiotic criticism contributed to such a negative view of those who did not like the game, it seems fans who loved the first game are willing to ignore any shortcomings of this story. But the truth is that, this game is far from perfect, just as much as it is far from ratings so often spotted on this platform (anything bellow a 4 is rather questionable, to say the least).

Finally, the game has ups and downs, although it personally felt like a disaster. It is not because it is poorly designed, but solely because the story did not do Ellie's character justice exactly at the most important part of the story, which is the ending. And although this might seem like a small detail, it is not, especially in story driven games such as this one.

I knew about the leaks before I played the first game. I played the first game at least five times before picking the second one, and I can say with moral honesty that I do not know if I will ever play The Last of Us Part II ever again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The greatest, most brilliant story I've seen in a game. A story that perfectly depicted human nature when the structure of society is all but gone. Joel's death is a high price to pay, even for the storywriters, but it is the fuel that will keep you hooked to the game for the rest for the rest of it, craving for vengeance, only to realize that vengeance will not solve anything. And from that point on it becomes a battle of Ellie against herself and her own traumas. Ellie ends up killing the people in the gang completely blinded by her desire for revenge, including the only WLF guy who stood to defend her (Owen) and a pregnant Mel. Only to end up finding an Abby who has finally tried to redeem herself and for once do something nice for another person. Had Ellie killed Abby she would have proven that ellie is as **** as her. And it was by forgiving abby, and by fighting her on a one on one fight ( even though she started with a knife). That she really realized that the only way to forgive Joel, and to forgive herself was to forgive Abby. This story is out of this world its simply much deeper than anything I've seen before. The only real problem is that players don't really have the stomach for something like this. We have all been educated to live in a world of fantasy and avoid watching gruesome videos in real life, and this game forces you a mouthful of pain and brutality of a real world down your throat. I'm not saying this game is for everyone. But if you can see beyond all the blood and violence, you will find the most humane characters ever seen on a game. This is simply brilliant to me. To force people to accept the reality of some countries even today, but this time in the United states in a Post apocalyptic world. If you can't handle a story like this, I totally get it. I just think that the whole story is an instrospection into Ellie's mind and her Nemesis to show, that in the end, they are both just humans. Expand

Great game brought down by a toxic community. The graphics are great and the gameplay is absolutely amazing. It's pretty obvious that the people who hate on Abby barely found out that women can get buff, and they don't seem to like it. I'm not entirely sure what they expected either, getting buff during an apocalypse is pretty reasonable. That being said the story isn't nearly as specialGreat game brought down by a toxic community. 10/10

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
