This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being a huge fan of the first game, I can honestly say I’ve never felt so betrayed by a sequel. The graphics are incredible and the gameplay is slightly better than the previous with new additions to help your survivability, but the story is the equivalent of a car crash. I saw all of the leaks before release and still thought that there was a chance that playing would change the context and perspective and I was correct. It changed it so negatively that I couldn’t look away as one of my favorite franchises was butchered before my eyes. Neil Druckmann stated that this game is about hate and I fully understand that now. I hated the game being leaked, I hate the direction they took the story, I hate the character decisions that seemed out of place, I hate the reviewers giving mysterious positive reviews claiming it’s a masterpiece and I hate myself for buying this game. One point for graphics and another for gameplay. Nothing else deserved it. Also, what kind of revenge story (which is played out already) ends with no revenge for the main character? And by main character, I’m referring to one of the two people we looked forward to playing as, not bland and boring Abby. Expand

But every step of the way showed us how we can have two perspectives of the same story. I hated the way it ended. It left me sleepless and in agony about the choices we were forced to make. The game had interesting and updated battles and sections over last of us. But we weren't there for the gameplay even if it was good.. We were here for the difficult ride and I'm glad I did. Expand

Story tackles complex & thought provoking issues, challenged my biases & perspective & made me feel a wide range of intense emotions. ND took a big narrative risk with their vision but managed to tell a story that was true to the characters & the world they inhabit. Gameplay is vastly improved & super fun. The more open world structure encourages exploration & allows each encounter to be approached using a variety of different strategies. This is a massive game, twice the length of the 1st with stunningly realistic & crazy detailed graphics, & that very natural character dialogue & mo-cap facial expressions which we come to expect from ND. My only criticism was that certain sections of the game felt a bit long & stretched out, leaving me exhausted & hoping for a bit of reprieve. Though it’s likely this was their intention. One of the best analogies I’ve heard comparing each game is that the 1st ends with hope on the surface but a sense of misery underneath whereas this ends with misery on the surface but a sense of hope underneath. Just as part 1 was to PS 3, this game is the very best of this gen of consoles, it has excellent replay value & will stay in your heart & mind long after you finish it. Expand

Let's ignore narrative and first look at the other aspects. The visual is astonishing, level design remains high standard, and the details in this game are insane. As for gameplay, you'll definitely enjoy it if you enjoy Naughty Dog's previous games. It's more polished and smooth.
Look back to narrative, as you can see from the reviews, this is definitely not a game for everyone. In fact I won't recommend it, not everyone has what it takes to appreciate this game: a strong and sympathetic heart. The story is dark and distressing indeed, and triggers quite a lot of negative emotions along the journey. But it also presents the most complicated, touching and beautiful relationship I've ever seen in a video game, and provides the most intense and unique experience.
So all in all, I think TLOU2 is a masterpiece. I understand why so many people dislike/hate this game, but for those who can accept the plot for what it is and embrace it, this is definitely a must-play.

The story blends in the gameplay and thats how you feel the story telling even better than in most recent games. The music is so well done and the acting the is nothing like this in any game. You can really feel the characters emotions. Most games its just gameplay and than simple cheap acting story momentsabd back to gameplay again but here it blends in while your playing and offcourse there a longer cut scenes. I love how you can feel a different between playing against humans or the creatures. Sometimes it feels repetitive but lets be honest here what game doesn’t ? But because of the change of area’s, characters, story you stay in the game and the story. I can understand that a lot of people don’t agree with the choices in the story. I kinda like what they did with the characters to play both sides and kinda understand why someone acts like that. I find it sad that the comments are negative like this cause that means future developers not gonna take a risk like this. And we will get the same basic simple Standaard storyline, Hero vs Bad guy But this is all my opinion and I respect everyone’s opinion. I loved it and hope the will keep on making games like this. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Excellent technical presentation all around.

    Cons:
The game developers have lost their way with this sequel. They have left behind the hope and wonder of Ellie’s plague immunity, and exchanged it for a drawn out, unnecessarily gruesome, and morally bankrupt slugfest. The need to showcase the various sexual appetites of the main characters and the complete disregard for contemporary religious beliefs shows their need to be seen as “woke hipsters.”

In a nutshell, gamers play games to have fun and to enjoy a great story. The developers of the sequel have chosen to lose the story elements that were compelling and instead are focusing on a disjointed story of the main characters descent into murderous psychosis. Compare this story to the story of a Horizon Zero Dawn and you can clearly see what I’m talking about.

Kudos to you, Laura Bailey. The gameplay is good, as in fun, for the most part. Abby's section is better than Ellie's. The problem is that by the time I got to Abby's part, the repetitive gameplay (mechanics) had gotten a bit tedious. Then there's the main issue I have with the game, the story. The story is absolute trash! For a STORY-BASED game, this clearly ruined the experience for me. Abby, though well-acted, is a TERRIBLY written character. She is unlikeable, and the attempts to get me to like her failed miserably. Another "tell" that the story is bad is the fact that the game is too long. Averaging at 25-30 hours, as opposed to the 15-18 in the first game, you are left feeling drained and completely unsatisfied. I feel my time was completely wasted. I would not recommend buying this game at full price, if at all. To those out there who are still curious about the game, I suggest either viewing a playthrough on youtube OR waiting to buy the game after it's been discounted at GameStop (at least by half). DO NOT PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS GAME. After my first playthrough, I rated the game 6/10. Now that I've played AND viewed the game a number of times, I can't give it higher than a 5/10. The gameplay had very few improvements over the first game, and that wasn't the most praised aspect of part 1. None of the characters, beyond Joel, are really that likable. This includes Ellie. The story doesn't make sense, especially after learning what Naughty Dog was trying to say. That's all I can say without spoiling anything.....more anyway. Naughty Dog, you dropped the ball on this one. Expand

As with the first game, the story is the main selling point. There were impossible expectations on naughty dog after the first game, and while I don’t think the story was AS good as the first game, it’s still very solid. Also, the world-building in this game is phenomenal, and the longer length of this game allows for a wider cast of characters to be developed and fleshed out.

    ********SPOILER ALERT********
if you didn`t finish the game don`t read the following

I know that many people are not going to read this but for those who actually finished the game and did not understand the ending (or doesn`t know how to feel about it), I will leave you with an analysis that may be useful to some:

Ellie's hatred for Abby is an external reflection of Ellie's self-hatred.
Joel deeply hurt Abby and Ellie in different ways and they both punished him for it. Ellie hates Abby for torturing Joel to death, especially since she didn't have a chance to restore her relationship with Joel. This is a parallel to her situation with Ellie because she also tortured Joel, she did it for years but in a different way, and I would say that in a more painful way for Joel, and that was to disconnect from him. Ellie hates herself for torturing him like this and for not restoring their relationship when there was still time. That is the real pain that she has been trying to avoid facing throughout this quest for revenge, she is like a "junkie" who uses revenge to avoid dealing with those painful feelings of regret. This is the vision she has while she is drowning Abby (when she has the flashback of the scene on the porch with Joel) and chooses not to kill her. She is not only forgiving Abby, but more importantly forgiving herself and finally coming to a resolution as to what happened between her and Joel, I think Ellie leaving her guitar leaning against the window and walking away symbolically represents that she has forgiven Joel, and she made peace with what happened between them and she's finally ready to move on and start a new life.

When I finished The Last Of Us Part II for the first time, I felt empty and honestly, I didn't know what to feel, whether I liked it or not, but after much deliberation, I think it is truly a masterpiece.

People who say the game is just about "revenge=bad" or that the ending "feels utterly, hopelessly pointless", I think they really didn't get it (or didn't play it). Because this game is about forgiveness.

This game is not at all what the fans expected, but I think that's what makes it so great.

Yes, in the game our dream daddy of gaming was killed. Did we cry? I sure did, couldn't stop. I was fuelled by rage and anguish. I was Ellie. Through what was the first half of the game I felt everything she felt. And then Abby came into the equation. What leads up to the final battle is a step into Abby's shoes. At first, I was not on board, I want this **** to die, I wanted Ellie to beat her to a bloody pulp. That was until Abby's story started to pick up. As Abby I saved a young boy who defied his society. I conquered my fear of heights. I slayed the ugly **** that was the rat king. In what felt like minutes but really was hours, I was Ellie again. I was standing on a Misty beach staring at a starved Abby with my fists curled. What started as burning hatred in hour 2 turned into me screaming 'stop' at my TV. I've been playing video games for a long time and not once have I not wanted to press square. I froze up twice during the final battle and this is something I've never experienced. The reason why I give this game a 10/10 is because Naughty Dog made me feel something I've never felt. To call this game a lazily written revenge plot that doesn't end with revenge is undercutting the game's accomplishments. Whether you liked the game Naughty Dog did what they set out to do. We all felt lost, angry, and confused. In my mind this game is a masterpiece for that very reason. It provoked thought and it sparked conversation. I highly suggest the game. Form your own opinion and share it. But please, I ask that any hate towards the developers or critics comes to an end. Thank you for reading my really long review, enjoy your scrolling Expand

Baldurs Gate 2 had it, Zelda OOT had it, quite a few others, but for those of you who know, you know why you're a gamer, and it's not for gaining levels and uber dominating pwnz others, it's for the immersion the story and the characters that take you on a journey to another world that you can breathe in and look around in.

The Last of Us had it, and the Last of Us 2 has it. Lovingly crafted and a tribute to gamers.

We live in Polarizing times, it's precient ND crafted a game that allows gamers to explore an alternatives side to an event or set of information. It's not for everyone and I found the Ellie Portion much more satisfying, though I love that we are getting this level of story immersion in a game.

Had we played Abby for more time before the Golf Club incident I think we would have been able to identify with her more. Use the flashbacks to let us play and identify with Abby before we hate her guts for destroying our beloved Character. It was a mistake to make Abby masculine in physical appearance, particularly with little to no explanation for why her physique was so unique in the game world. This design choice raised an already high bar for me to climb in order to identify with Abby's world and motivations.

Lean into the game, you will be rewarded.

Beyond minor gripes, the game was incredible. The gameplay was incredible. The hint system was incredible. The game stays with you after you play it, and draws you back in. Thank you Naughty Dog, I hope you guys lean into the challenge of effective story telling with your games. By far the most talented AAA studio on the planet right now.

Improved gameplay from the first part. If you liked it in the first part, you like it here.
    Ovesome grafics and animations.
The biggest minus is the plot. He kills everything. Constant luck or bad luck of the main characters. Love triangles here and there. Dramatic moments that look just ridiculous. The game has the city of Santa Barbara. And the game itself is like the Santa Barbara

This is a narrative focused game, if the story doesn't work, the game doesn't work. There are several weird decisions, a lot of characters that don't act as they would have acted on the first game, some lies in the trailers (in 2018 Neil Druckmann stated only Ellie was a playable character, this is not true, one trailer shows Joel telling Ellie that ge wasn't going to let her go throught that alone, it's not in here), also they changed a character from being africanamerican in the first game to white in the second one (this feels weird considering all the efforts made searching for inclusion and diversity)...

After the 12-15 hour mark I just wanted the game to finish, which is quite bad since that's like half way through...

At several moments the game comes off as trying to be disruptive just for the sake of doing it

This doesn't feel like a proper sequel to me

Would I play through it again? Probably not... but that was just down to how long the storyline was. They done a great job. It may have lacked some immersion as some parts are free roam so it takes away some of the storyline as I like to explore EVERYWHERE. 7.9 out of 10!

That all being said. The game has a handful of issues, much of which revolves around pacing amd timing. The gameplay itself is more of the same from the last of us. Their are new options and enemies but overall it is just as good if not even a little better than the first mechanically. Where the game loses its three points is the story. Don't get me wrong, the story it tells is actually a good story. There is a through line of the concepts of revenge, it's outcome and it's impacts. They specifically are crafted to show us that the only real difference between the enemy and the hero, is who we have more emotional investment with. They dropped the ball a couple of places to really make this message sink in. However, you aren't supposed to like Abby in this game. Just like in the end, you're not supposed to like Ellie. The main problem comes with pacing. They waited too long for us to take control of Abby. I think the game would have improved greatly if we started as Abby during the "tutorial" section to learn to play, then jump to Ellie for the start. Then we should have swapped day by day with the two characters to get more connection with Abby. They also could have held off on Joel's death until we have some connection to Abby. With those two changes I think this game could legit be an 8 or even 9 out of 10.
However, I do have to bring up the token trans character and their treatment of them. (I am NOT talking about Abby! Abby is never said be to be trans in game and is never talked about in that way so wether or not she is, is irrelevant. She is a woman in game. Period)

The Non-binary child in the game is, in all honesty, nearly tortured emotionally more than any other character in this game. The game is not a happy one but when you are introducing character into your game who are not widely represented, it may be important not to have your character be tortured, forced to kill their own mother, and watch their sister get their arm cut off and then be shot... I'm not part of the NB community so that's just my take but I've heard a lot of people not happy about this portrayal.

So over all it is a generally more than good game with a couple of flaws that brings it down to the slightly above average zone. Any of the massive negative reviews are suspect (as I would also day is anyone who says this game is perfect!) If the scores wouldn't be bombed because of people being reactionary, this game should probably get a 6-8 score. So until it's in that area, I'm helping to bring it up!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Full disclosure, I wasn't the hugest fan of the first game so that may change your opinion of my review.

The Last of Us 2 is no where near a bad game. Its completely understandable to not like this game for the story it decided to tell, but to say that the writing is objectively horrible holds no merit. The pacing of Abby's day 1 was extremely slow and took some of the excitement away from me, but it was soon made up for with the addition of Lev and Yara. I've played through this game twice and I'm personally still on the Abby sucks train, but the game does a good job of using Lev to humanize her. His addition to the story made me see Abby as a extremely flawed human being rather than a comically unforgivable villain. I don't think the story ever necessarily asks you to like Abby. Mel's feelings about Abby is more than enough to show that.

I think if the game was structured a bit different, playing both Abby's and Ellie's journey through Seattle side by side like they did in the Jackson chapter of the game, would've helped improve the pacing. Instead we get a jarring switch of perspectives in the middle of the climax, taking away from the tension of the moment.

Although the ending was not what I would have wanted, I'm not disappointed with it. I would've preferred a happy ending, Ellie staying with Dina and JJ on the farm and learning to cope and hopefully find peace within herself. Instead we get a much more depressing ending with Ellie ending up alone. I don't need all my games to have happy endings, but when a game is filled to the brim with heartbreaking and depressing moments, it should end on a happy note to avoid feeling like torture porn.

Despite the games shortcomings, I enjoyed my time with it and am looking forward to future Naughty Dog releases.

I gotta admit the gameplay is good and the graphics are phenomenal. But it’s expected when you take 7 years to make a game with so much production hype and followers. This triple A title game is a political message rather than a game you would enjoy playing. Abby is the worst character created, her timing within the story is pure garbage. And they seemed to add along the way that she is trans, just to fit a ‘trans’ gaming audience. But why? Just because of the plot, I couldn’t enjoy the game, there was no drive no purpose for me to continue and hence the 0 star rating. The game is a waste of money, and the coders for the game have been more oppressed than any trans person I know. They had to watch the story writers Anal rape the game in front of their eyes. Indeed, what the establishment ‘professional reviewers’ ignore is that a game is more about the gameplay and graphics. It needs to have emotional appeal and storytelling that can endear the gamer. The LOU1 had this in abundance. However, the LOU2 in its cause to ‘subvert expectations’ has given us something cheap, gut-wrenching and non-sensical which leaves (especially, fans of this franchise.) you feeling absolutely empty and resigned, e.g. the application of Joel’s death was similar to the death of Luke Skywalker.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II was fine. It wasn’t the worst game, but it also wasn’t the best. First of all, I’d like to acknowledge that this is possibly the most visually impressive game I have ever played. This game is **** gorgeous. I often found myself just admiring the environments around me or staring at the way blood pools and splatters naturally. The level of detail is beyond impressive. The gameplay is also quite enjoyable, gameplay and mechanics aren’t anything revolutionary or special, but I found it fun to play. While this has nothing to do with the story, it’s still a video game at the end of the day, and this was a fun game to play. However, in a story driven game, the story fell flat. The story itself isn’t even that bad, it was the structure that made some parts feel like a chore. Having Abby murder Joel that gruesomely, then have us play as her for half of the game made me play her parts only out of obligation, not because I was interested in her character or story. I’m not mad Joel died, however the way he died felt a little like lazy writing, but one could make the argument that his extreme caution from the first game was softened by living a relatively normal life with Ellie in Jackson. I think a better way to tell this same story would be to market it as a stand alone, a spin off of the original, following Abby and her friends traveling through the United States. Then mid way, reveal they’re looking for Joel and have him die. This could be when the tides switch and we go into control of Ellie and have her half be the exact same, then have the confrontation in the theater be the FINAL boss fight to remove the events in Santa Barbara as this felt disconnected from the rest of the game. Connecting deeply with Abby before knowing her intentions would make her actions with Joel that much more impactful on the player. Introducing her relationship with the other characters around her BEFORE we know Ellie ends up killing just about all of them would allow us to better connect with them. I found myself not really caring about the love triangle between Owen, Abby, and Mel because I already knew Owen and Mel die, so it felt pointless and a waste of time. This had to be my biggest problem with the game. Trying to make us empathize with a character we already hated then make us care about her relationships when we knew these characters died made her half of the game feel like a chore. I only kept playing out of wanting to know what happens after the cut before Abby’s section begins. And to later introduce a brand new group (The Rattlers) to only have them in 2-3 hours of gameplay was very weird. The entire time played in Santa Barbara felt like a DLC rather than apart of the same game. I have many more thoughts on this game when it comes to themes and the manipulation of gameplay between Ellie and Abby to create faux empathy for Abby. I’ve already played it twice due to the fun gameplay and stunning graphics, but the story structure is beyond annoying. I unfortunately think this will be GOTY due to the prerelease hype and critic reviews, but it isn’t deserving. Expand

Absolutely cringe worthy the negative circle jerk that is happening around this game.

I think this game absolutely closes this gen with perfection. I was left wondering how they managed to pull tgistoff on the ps4. It completely blows most of the latest releases on all platforms out of the water. The story.. The graphics.. The animation.. The gameplay.. This game is a must play.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
