This review does not much talk about the game but was rather written to direct you to looking at some more positive reviews of it because you will not find many here and you will most likely find those more informative. I 100% recommend this game to anyone who enjoys great, divisive storytelling and is capable of playing it with an open mind. Everyone who says anything bad about this gameThis review does not much talk about the game but was rather written to direct you to looking at some more positive reviews of it because you will not find many here and you will most likely find those more informative. I 100% recommend this game to anyone who enjoys great, divisive storytelling and is capable of playing it with an open mind. Everyone who says anything bad about this game has opinions rooted in homophobia, sexism, and closed mindedness. I am certain that if you were to have a conversation with anyone who says anything bad about this game’s story you would realize that the opinions of the majority are full of bigotry and ignorance, and they would inadvertently lead you to buying the game. I’ve played through the story twice and can easily say that it is my favorite story ever told in all of movies and video games. Expand

Pretentious story telling ruined a good gameplay and amazing visuals, that's the reason I only give it 1 point.

Took me more than a month to complete do to not liking the game; repetitive, one dimensional & forced story, complete garbage, avoid it at all cost, you'll lose some money and time with this "game" in my opinion :(

I waited more than five **** years too. And I am also pissed off on how they killed off Joel in such a disgusting manner, its **** disrespectful. But, isn’t it great that exists a game, that can create so much controversy, and yet makes us fell in hatred and emotions in a such particular way?
You dont get this type of games often
I mean its the last of us, its a cruel **** world.
You can’t deny the effort they put making this game, the details and grafics are astonishing and the gameplay is almost flawless.
Yes, I finished the game and I felt emotionally drained. There isnt other game that had me feel anything as TLOUS saga has ever done, its an eye-opening **** game too. I agree Abby deserved to die in that **** beach, but it wasn’t our call to make but Ellie’s. If you have any love for the TLOUS, at least respect Ellie’s decission. And I dont **** care what you say. Ellie got her revenge at the end, goddammit I wanted Abby dead too. But Ellie killed everyone close to **** Abby. Thinking it twice, I don’t dislike the idea that Abby’s life will be full with of regret and torment on what she has **** done.

Just remeber there isn’t any exclusive **** game from other console franchise that can top the story of the last of us.

Because of you people **** around is why we dont **** get good games anymore, stop throwing **** to naughtydog, or don’t tell you want another pointless shooter game as halo 8.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the best game I have ever played, the graphics are amazing, the animations and realism of the gameplay are just mind-blowing, the combat system, dodging, the AI, it's just tremendous. However, almost everyone didn't seem to like the story. I believe it is because they didn't understand it as it actually is.

Most people hate it because Joel dies and Ellie doesn't kill Abby. First of all, every human being dies at some point, people have to accept that, also the average life expectancy in the US is around 72 years, so obviously in a post-apocalyptic world, the average life expectancy would lower down a lot, which means Joel was supposed to die around his age. My point is even if Abby didn't exist, Joel was anyway gonna die (plus characters always wonder if they're going to die from old age, because it is very improbable).

In addition, the fact that the predecessor's doctor NPC was Abby's father, doesn't mean it's the only reason Joel was killed, Abby wasn't alone on her quest for vengeance, everyone wanted him dead because he made the worst decision ever made in the entire world (literally). About Ellie not killing Abby at the end, there are many reasons. 1- Ellie couldn't sleep anymore, she always had the memory of Joel dying, she couldn't even hunt (this is when the birthday gift part becomes important, when she finds the boar in the museum). So she went to Santa Barbara and when she's going to kill her, she finally remembers Joel playing the guitar, Ellie finally calmed her consciousness and stopped thinking about him only because of the fact that he died, but because of how he was. Then, she realizes there's no point on keep destroying that woman, so she lets her go.

2- (This is my personal interpretation) Ellie didn't kill Abby because she saw herself in Lev, she knew that by killing Abby, she would be, in a way, killing Joel.
The game makes you not only understand that Abigail is a good person, but to comprehend the Mother figure she is to Lev. She was there when he losed his mom, she was there when he loses his sister and his home, she understood he wanted to be a boy, she all he had, and he was all she had too (after losing the love of her life, his girlfriend + future son + dog, her friend group and her home, the WLF).
So Ellie realized she was the villain of the story, and allowed her to leave with Lev.

I also wanted to emphasize the fact that, in the beginning of the game, when you just get to know Abby, after killing Joel, she gave me that feeling I got when I argued with my dad, that threatening sensation that would send shivers down my spine, I would cringe with my arms to the sound of her voice, I was totally scared (you can see that when she asks Ellie to toss her weapon and she does it while shaking). Even in the Tracking Lessons chapter when she throws a stone to her father, I could feel that fear even though she was a child there, but when I got to know her better through her gameplay, that disappeared, I had totally empathized with her. There are people who say they didn't stop seeing her as a villain (I thought that myself) but you actually do, you just don't realize it in the process.

I personally believe this game recquires a high level of maturity and analysis to understand, as a big percentage of the gamer community is conformed by underage people (or even 10 year old children), it is probable that the majority don't get to comprehend it. Nevertheless, this game is still one of the greatest games ever made, I would call it "The ‘Pulp Fiction’ of games".

I played part 2 during a holiday, daily giving my wife enthusiastic updates (this game packs amazing moments) until I grew silent for a few days as the game turned grimmer... Then on one morning I was having breakfast with my wife and I finally believed I was ready to speak and said the words 'I finished the game'. What happened then was a lump grew in my throat and I was barely able talk about what happened and how I felt about it... The game was that good...

It was only then I learned other speak bad of the game and I respect it, I just don't see how.

Truly amazing use of video games as a storytelling medium. This studio is really pushing on games as an art form and what can be achieved with it that cannot be achieved through other mediums. My only critique is that sometimes the mechanics weren't fully aligned with the narrative experience, but all in all this was a minor issue. A powerful and fascinating game. Look, I understand that they had to change the story and characters to try to "innovate", but what came out was something quite bad in the story, the graphics were excellent, but they sacrificed the story like a lamb. the end was very forced and you feel as if you had no choice, it would have been excellent to leave the decision to us and not force ourselves.

Although I don't like Abby, the Abby line is quite good, especially the part with Lev. I can feel that it somehow emulates the relationship between Joel and Ellie in TLOU1, but it's simply not as good.

The game is short, but with the story decision it's long enough. I honestly think Naughty Dog did try to maximize the tension inside the game, but sometimes darkness and conflicts are not the only thing we expect from game like TLOU2.

The game is also unnecessary long. The story keeps dragging and dragging for no reason. The writing is mediocre and at the end, the message of the story didn't even get conveyed properly.

    NO SPOILERS

Finally, done with The Last of Us Part II. I won't go into any detail regarding the story. I'll dissect things in bits and pieces which constitute the game as a whole, and then a summary of my thoughts.

First off, this game is not for everyone. I won't go into any arguments as to why this is the case, as we all interpret things differently. As for me, I loved it. Despite all the flak that Naughty Dog has been getting lately from all over the Internet, I feel like they gave me more than my money's worth. And then some.

    GAMEPLAY
It's more of the same, with minor improvements here, and there. I don't think there's really much to touch up on the gameplay, as it was already top notch to begin with. I did like how fluid everything felt, due in part to a heightened sense of freedom of approach. You can opt for stealth, or go in guns blazin' like the cowboy that you are. The game doesn't push you into a certain playstyle, and it makes it really fun. I do recommend playing on the higher difficulties. Fewer resources means you plan out how you'll use what you have, and how you approach certain scenarios. It really makes you feel the drab scarcity of the world you live in. And the game shines in that regard. LEVEL DESIGN - Gameplay
I like how the level design was literally elevated. Since there's an added verticality to Ellie, the map was constructed with multiple tiers in mind. I felt that the first game was so tight and constrictive, but this one blows it out of the park. Massive levels with much more freedom during subsections meant a more varied experience for everyone, minimizing repetition. This also means more replayability, since you can miss out on a lot because of how much there is to see. LEVEL DESIGN - Art
I paid much more attention to the lay of the land this time around, and I can see how meticulously crafted the world is, very much similar to the first game. I really like how interconnected everything feels compared to the previous game.

    PLAYTIME
My playtime total was 35 hours and 25 mins. Due to the added nature of the highest difficulty, I did take some more time with the game than usual. I also tried to mop up as much of the collectibles as I could, which also added to the counter. Overall, this is a 20-25 hour game on regular difficulties. There were some padded out sections, but I didn't really feel it was too detrimental to the whole experience. STORY
This is where it gets spicy. A lot of people hate it, a lot of people are indifferent, and then there are people like me who loved it. I think this is an examination of the human psyche, and the depths we're willing to go to fulfill our need for satisfaction, whatever that may be. The Last of Us isn't a story about heroes and villains; it's a human story about people just trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. A world wherein survival could mean consequences down the line, and how our actions, no matter how justified or satisfying it may be, will always have repercussions. It might be hard to relate to, for some, given the circumstances we live in, but I couldn't really think of anything to compare this to. It's a world of its own. There were times when I had trouble going further, mainly because it was all too much. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because then I wouldn't have the drive to see things through. And it also means that it makes me feel so much, which, I must say, doesn't happen quite a lot, even in other entertainment media.

I did go into this with no preconceived notion as to how it should go. After all, this isn't my story to tell. I'm lucky I was able to avoid spoilers as much as possible, because it would've ruined the experience. The plot as a whole won't be agreeable for everyone, but I like how it was done, and I felt that no one was left behind in this story. Execution was really great. SUMMARY
In the end, everything was worth it; the wait, the money spent, the time lost to playing. A rollercoaster of emotions throughout, with some moments leaving me teary-eyed, or just downright broken at the core. And I think this is where it succeeds, since the goal was to challenge your outlook on survival, and how far you're willing to go to feel some semblance of vindication. It's not a perfect game; in fact, far from it. But what it does great far surpasses what it does otherwise. And the fact that it encourages discussion between the morality of the charactes, and the story itself, is a victory already. And that god-tier animation. Facial detail is on a whole another level. Naughty Dog set the standard again in that regard. I'd give it a 9/10. -1 for not doing much in terms of gameplay innovation.

I forgot to say this but mad props to Naughty Dog for adding in that extra work to make the game accessible for everyone. You can spend an hour alone tweaking the game to your liking / disability / personal challenges.

What a drop in quality this was. They wreck the characters then make you play as the character that killed Joel, in other words it sucks and then don’t even let you get revenge on her at the end. A fantastic sequel that's more of an extension of the first than a sequel. The mechanics of the first one are greatly improved and never have I been so glad to have a knife. It's inferior to its predecessor, with some SJW / Progressive **** But overall, it's a good game, worth at least a single play through. Graphically good, gameplay is nice. Story and narrative are inferior to the first game but overall it's not as bad as it seems. The ending could have been better if the player was given choice. But it makes sense considering everything that happened.

It's like the developers completely forgot why people loved the first game so much.

It wasn't the "gritty world". Or the gameplay, which was only slightly innovative at the time, but hardly the selling point of the game. It was the story and relationship between the characters. The dynamic of taking someone who had lost everything, and giving them something to hope for. To the point where they will sacrifice everything to save that person. The motivation is love, not hate. The sequel plunges you into hatred. Sure it's fine to explore that element, but doing so while destroying what people love is the wrong move. Just make your own game, a spin-off, a new franchise to explore those elements, don't hijack a franchise people love. You've hijacked the fans love of the characters to make a profit from pre-orders, and shat on the core audience that loved the original game. People don't dislike the game because Ellie is gay, or that there is a trans person (maybe some do, but **** em). We already knew about Ellie, fans played the expansion for TLoU where this is explored. It was great. It built our love for the character and her journey. We dislike it, because you destroyed the characters we love.

While my score is positive I cannot recommend this game. Out of respect for the craft I give it a 6, but this game is more a movie than a game and not in a good way.
They forget that as a player at the wheel you should steer. Instead the story must go where it must go according to the directors and writers. This is a huge problem when your underlying message is violence begets more violence. You cannot condemn violence and talk about how bad it is while taking away player choice. As a result many of the plot points and climaxes fall flat on its ass.

The game's biggest gimmick is how perspective changes your point of view. So if this fails to impress you, the game does very little except that. The impact is a literal "all your eggs in one basket".
Speaking of climaxes, it's certainly a problem if you don't care for any of the characters. This point being subjective. Some will but I didn't. As a result I rather enjoyed playing as the infamous new character the game introduces.

Throughout we don't get a say in what characters do. No option to kill A or spare B. Things just runs on rails. I thought I was clever in thinking that I would spare as many humans as I could via stealth, only to learn that certain doors won't unlock until hostiles are cleared. Literally forcing me to commit murder even though I got past all the threats non lethal.

It's a stealth game. I dig it. I can appreciate that, but then you get RE:4 cabin sequences and it really doesn't make sense the rest of the game design considered. It's just frustrating and tedious. If you start a gunfight via poor judgment - then fair enough, but forced sequences don't work for this title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The biggest attraction of the game was the fraternal love that developed between Joel and Ellie throughout the entire game until the end, that's why everyone liked it, and they repeated the game (I repeated the game 7 times) The worst decision was to kill Joel at the start of the game, and replace the fraternal love that developed in the first game with love crap at first sight lol. We ALL bought the game from Joel and Ellie. We expect dramatic scenes between Joel and Ellie and the brilliant idea was to kill him after 40min of gameplay. The story of TLOU 2 is a total rubbish which I am sure NO ONE will play the game 2 times, for the simple reason that the story is not enjoyable ... in the first game the vast majority played the campaign several times .. I doubt very much that anyone wants to play it a second time. Another point, all the other characters could have been dismembered or burned alive and we wouldn't have minded ... BECAUSE THERE WAS NO DEVELOPED ATTACHMENT. The only attachment we had was the Joel - Ellie relationship (who was even having a hard time, and they could have worked from there). They really should fire those who had the stupid idea to eliminate fraternal love and incorporate love without any attachment from users, I don't think they can work on a TLOU 3. Ah, good job taking Ellie's fingers off her so she could never play the guitar again, the only thing Joel left her.
it's a **** game of the year 2020, that is, ALL the games of this era can be scored 10/10 in graphs and gameplay easily, what really makes the difference is a good use of resources in terms of characters, story, narrative, dialogues, etc. 1. They forced the use of a character with whom we had no developed attachment. (IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE RESULT WOULD NOT BE GOOD.)2. We were tricked with the trailers, thinking Joel would be an accompanying character (Joel).3. The worst use of resources I have seen in years, should be ashamed to do this rubbish in so many years...Joel's death mismanaged, if only killed mid-game or given a "dignified" death and in the process "develop" attachment to Abby. For example: Playing with Ellie and Joel as Abby searches for Joel (and that way we are presented to Abby in a different way, ASI develops character attachment). But NOOOO Hahaha we'll have Abby kill one of the game's biggest resources at the first hour of play and then force you to play with Abby for 7 hours...that can go wrong?

Like many other users, this sometimes included rage. HOWEVER, honestly after finishing the game and playing the whole way through I left feeling honestly quite satisfied with the game as a whole. Admittedly, I did take some time away from the game in the middle when I felt like my negative emotions were affecting my ability to play the game without bias, and when I returned it honestly felt a lot better. I'm usually the sort of person to play through a whole game as fast as possible, but THIS IS NOT THE GAME FOR THAT - if you want to process the point of the plot that is. Ultimately, this is a story about the terrible cycle of revenge and how it affects yourself and the people around you. We as players all seem to have successfully taken on the anger and vengeful emotions that the story tries to evoke in us, but haven't embraced the message the game is trying to portray - that we need to let these go.

Outside of the plot, the gameplay is actually markedly improved compared to the first one, there are a number of small changes and details that make the game very satisfying to play. The game also has a brilliant soundtrack. There are new types of enemies to fight, with some new and old mechanics mixed in and this gives the game a fresh sort of challenge to navigate. The exploration is much nicer in this than the original, just in my own opinion.

This game series has always been about highlighting some of the awful parts of humanity, mixed with both moments of tranquility and despair and honestly I think this game does continue those themes beautifully - if frustratingly, at first. I honestly reckon you should take the time to give it a shot, and take it at a pace where you won't be judging everything you see at first glance.

The positives were the beautiful visuals in some unique locations. The cinematic cut scenes at the end of most chapters were also exceptional. Those were the two things that kept me engaged.

    So then there's the negatives...

The gameplay which felt repetitive. Human zone, infected zone, scavenge zone. Repeat. Then all the time spent in Seattle. So many beautiful locations and variety when the game wasn't in Seattle. But 60% of the game was hotel lobbies, coffee shops, streets and commercial buildings. No notable gameplay mechanics or crafting options introduced over last of us 1. Scavenging was unrewarding but it felt like I would be at a disadvantage if I didn't. 1 pill here, 1 bullet there. Killing humans with the shotgun, mines and bow was fun though.

The story. I actually liked the plot point of Abby killing Joel. Seeing Joel from a different perspective (that he did kill someone elses father and at the expense of humanities cure). But the execution was missed. Ellie became a moody unlikable person. Her story was 'revenge for Joel'. Abby on the other hand was much more interesting up until the end of seattle day 2. Then the scar refugee angle felt weak. Felt missed to not have her weave in and out of Ellies events in Seattle. Her ending - a random capture was also a disappointment. Santa Barbra, while beautiful, felt rushed. Less time in seattle and more time there (or just anywhere else) would have been more fun. Just more varied. **** Seattle. It just kept going and going and going. Can you tell I was over Seattle by the end? Just take me somewhere else! Please! No more hotels!

Hopefully Naughty Dog choose to kick off a new IP after this

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
