This on the level of Game Of Thrones series finale disappointment. I don't mind about the political, trans, SJW elements, or even the death of a character. I thought they were all brave and engaging choices. The visuals/art of the game are incredible as well. Nothing wrong with the technical. What I have a problem is the lazy, heavy handed, hollow, and failed narrative it TRIES to pull off at the end. It blows my mind that they couldn't see this coming. Did they really think they could introduce us to a new character/narrative that is SOO good that we forget what we fell in love with in the first game and are willing to forgive the destruction of that. If Neil/ND are actually going to take their own 'moral of the story' from this game, then there shouldn't be a Part 3 or any humans dying in the hands of our protagonist in any of their games from now on. They killed their own franchise. And their fanbase. Unforgivable. Expand

Great game with gorgeous graphics and animations. Gameplay is solid and very good. Never been so conflicted between 2 main characters, Abby and Ellie are real humans from flesh and blood and it's so well written. Only downside are the side characters, they don't flesh them out so much like in the first game.

It's a game with so many facets. The characters have so many facets. I have been trying to write something, but I have been keeping fighting against myself about what I wrote and at the end just deleted most of it. But there's one thing I'm sure, it's such a great moment to me when Ellie found the strengh of forgiveness at the end. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay: The gameplay in the last of us part 2 is brutal, dirty and feels like you're fighting for you're life in every encounter. The AI is incredibly smart and can plan coordinated attacks on you as well as outflank you, when I was playing on survivor mode I felt forced to play aggressive as if I stayed in one spot enemies would quickly surround you. It is an immersive experience because of these mechanics as well as the horrific screams when you dismember an enemy or the cries of anger when you kill one of their friends. I recommend playing on survivor. 10/10

Graphics; Absolutely stellar, jaw dropping, and at times almost feels photorealistic. 10/10

Story: This aspect of the game is the most polarizing and controversial, and is the main reason of the negative reviews. The point of the game is not merely revenge is bad, as many players say it is, I'd like it to compare it too the final scene in "Come and See". In which the main character fueled by hate comes to understand that we are all victims of our environment, Abby is not inherently evil, the world she lives in forced her to be evil to survive, just like has happened in Ellies and Joels storylines, but as we play with Abby we see that she is not simply Joels killer, she is also a daughter to a murdered father, friend, lover and just as human as Ellie, she is a good person which had to make bad decisions. In other words its not the people who are evil it is the world they live in that turns evil into a virtue, almost a condition for surviving. When I understood this it was easier to slowly forgive Abby as each time we played as here we were seeing another layer of her, and by the end I actually enjoyed playing as Abby more than I enjoyed playing as Ellie. Whether you liked the game or not comes down to if you could forgive Abby or not, you're in the same boat as Ellie, so thats why I think whether to spare Abby or not should be up to the players, and not determined by the game, simply because a lot pop people could not forgive Abby, in my case I did and the decision Ellie made was coherent with my own, but a lot of people wanted Abby dead and just had to see their character forgive them. So in conclusion the story is a masterpiece if you can slowly forgive Abby thought the game. But naughty dog should have allowed you to decide. 8/10

It was ok. Gameplay is great, some of the new open world aspects (quickly abandoned) are great, weapons and fighting are great, exploring is great, opening is great. ... So why only 6/10? The story devolves so quickly, the player is pushed into a nonsensical duality motif for which, why ruin the flow of the story and the well established characters with such an unneeded change of pace?

The atmosphere is absolutely top notch along with the stunning graphics that will have you trying for screenshot opportunities for hours. This game is not for everyone, it is very bleak, intense and even emotionally draining at times. If you played and liked the first one, which was also one of the most intense games there was story wise, you know what kind of story you should expect.

It is a game in which you should really invest time and effort, you should listen to the conversations, read Ellie’s journal, look around and definitely not rush it or play it whilst being distracted.
Graphics and gameplay wise, it’s the smoothest game I’ve ever experienced. It is extremely realistic and makes for an immersive experience like no other. It is extremely polished, and the amount of attention to detail is mind blowing.

The realness of it might scare some away, it is not a cliché good vs bad story, it is not always linear and it explores a lot of tough themes. But overall, that makes its impact bigger than any game I’ve ever played, and it pushes you to new places. So, if you play it you should keep an open mind, and ask yourself why they decided for the story to go this or that way, why you feel this and that emotion and so on. Although most scenes are far from pleasant and it might not be the ending you would want, it makes for a much more real, interesting and raw story. They make you question everything you thought about such and such character, their decisions and actions, they make you empathize with people you never thought you would, and deliver an ending that has many layers to it.
If you want a game that’s all about shooting and killing zombies, this is not for you. If you want a happy ending, more cliché/typical revenge story, this is not for you. If you want something light and fun to distract you this is definitely not for you. But if you want a beautifully layered complex story, that will immerse you to a whole new level, that will make you cry, laugh, be terrified, be angry, be happy; if you want to experience next level graphics and gameplay, if you want to witness insanely good acting, and if you want to test yourself, this is definitely worth it.

This is by far the game that made me feel the most intense emotions I have ever felt in a game before, and for that, I applaud Naughty Dog. They went for it, they went where no one else dares to go, and although not always a comfortable experience, it was one of the most memorable experience I’ve had, and feel very blessed I got to experience it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a classic sequel that has the almost impossible ahead of it: to match or, if possible, to overcome the original game. Unfortunately, given the fantastic and complex story that the first game was able to tell, this one would probably not have surpassed this milestone anyway, even if it were flawless - and it is really far from that. My simple verdict on the game is: TLOU 2 is a perfect craftsmanship that pays off for some bad story decisions.

I'll start with what probably bites everyone the most from the beginning: the death of Joel. A lot of people say they don't mind the twist as such, but they are dissatisfied with the circumstances - that an experienced and hardened survivor would not be so foolishly trapped, that he would not tell his name to a gang of armed unknown thugs, and so on… however, I do not agree with this. Joel's name was revealed by Tommy, who had always been a little naive, and I don't think they had any other choice of escaping from the rolling hordes of infected than to trust temporary comrades, albeit foreigners. No, in terms of logic, everything is fine. I'm just bothered with that it even happened.

Joel's relationship with Ellie was at least 90% of all TLOU. That was the magic, the geniality of the story. While playing, I was not looking forward to killing the infected or exploring beautifully depicted natural locations, but to more and more interactions and verbal skirmishes between the two main characters. By destroying this basic pillar, the game loses at least half of the interesting things.

Fortunately, this gloomy hundred-times boiled journey of revenge is saved by a new addition to the party - Dina. Or not? Dina is a well-written and well-drawn character, but she simply does not have the care and kindness uncompromisingly hidden under the mask of Joel's harsh inaccessibility. I didn't enjoy her dialogues with Ellie for the most part, and many times did she seemed to me as a story-imposed love object. And although I wasn't thrilled by it at first, I begin to appreciate the innocent Riley, who had at least some depth of character.

Unfortunately, most of the other characters aren't much better off either. The interesting Maria has practically zero space, Jesse shows up almost halfway through the game and ends just as quickly, the only remaining fighter from the Miller family is moved to the other track and it's a shame to talk about Abby at all - she is perhaps the least likeable character, which I have met so far in the games. So in the end, Ellie has to pull it all by herself again.

The second half of the game focuses on Abby and wants to show us her human side, that not all bad guys are bad and that they have their reasons - which doesn't work for four reasons: (1) Because when you just introduce someone as absolute evil, rotten bastard who beats your brain out of your favorite character, you can't expect everyone to forgive him for a few intentionally touching flashbacks. I just don't want to play as a jerk that I still hate just as much no matter how hard the game tries to make me like it. (2) Because the game tries to convince you by force that everyone who used to be "good" is somehow bad and evil - including Joel and Ellie. In fact, he's trying to make you stop loving Joel, or at least start doubting him. But I don't want to - I don't want anyone to ruin the image I created about him. I don't want to think that Abby´s dad was just an innocent doctor and Joel the bastard who killed him without mercy - he may have been a nice guy, but he was also an idiot who went with a scalpel against an armed man. If he didn't intervene like the other doctors, he could have survived… (3) Because then the game loses even the weak drive it had until then: if Abby isn't bad, then who is the villain? So who do we really want to kill? What do we want to achieve? They are all so terribly forced in shades of gray that the game lacks real evil.

In the whole game, I really liked only flashbacks to Ellie's past - especially "Birthday Gift". That was all I wanted from the game, and I don't think I was alone.

And what about the end? The ending is a chapter in itself, but I'll just say that Neil Druckmann's explanation "We had to let Ellie spare Abby to stay human" comes to me at least smiling. So Ellie kills dozens, hundreds of people along the way - cuts her necks, stabs in the stomach, shoots brains - kills a pregnant woman - but will she stay human if she doesn't kill the biggest scum in the game, which is directly responsible for all her suffering? Somewhere I read the analogy that it is as if Thanos found all the stones, but did not snap. Just whaaat? AT MINIMUM I would give a choice to kill/spare when it already has to be, but I find the ending as it is now a disappointment. The fact that the end of first game came to me as an absolutely brilliant and logical conclusion, perhaps one of the best in video game history, is this a decent armband.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I unterstand why people are pissed. They don‘t like how the game killed off Joel and say that the story doesn‘t make sense. In my opinion it does. Of course, the fact that the doctor, Joel killed at the end of TLOU 1, hat a daughter that would hunt down her dads killer seems kinda random. In my opinion the story still makes sense. In the world of the Last of Us, people don’t die like heroes they just get shot or whatever and that’s it. The enemies you kill are just getting shot or stabbed and die without much drama and so do our protagonists. Joel, who forgot how to trust while living in his peaceful little town Jackson, Jesse surprisingly getting shot in the face by Abby and so on.
Also, Ellie is not better than Abby. They both kill with no regrets, the only reason you hate Abby and love Ellie is, that you know her from the first game.
At first I hated Abby as well but playing her backstory made me like her more and more.
The only thing that really pissed me off is the ending.
From the point on, where Ellie and Dina live on the farm, with Jessie’s Baby etc. the game felt kinda weird. Ellie looked weird, Abby looked like a totally different person, the whole thing just felt like a different game in the last few ours.
The Gameplay is not the best but actually improved a lot and is way more extensive and better to control then in the first game.

All in all I think that, even though the fame gets way too much hate, its a masterpiece and next to Part 1, one of naughty dogs best games.

Game is awesome, I really appreciate Naughty Dog. No matter, what dumbs talking about that guys, go on same way

As most of disappointed players I can complain mostly on scenario.
    - Killing Joel in such way was simply wrong
    - So brutal revenge on Joel after so many years (as Abby) is also weird
    - from my perspective this game would be very short, because as Abby I would killed Ellie and Tommy after Joel's dead, because why keep alive two people which are close to person which We brutally killed in front of they eyes - that's cruel and stupid.
    - First half of Abby's campaign is simply boring and took me over a two week to move forward. During that time we are playing as person which We don't like or even hate... later this slightly changed because of more action.
Main characters make stupid, unlogic choices during the game.
That story have also some good sides - player can compare/confront both sides during whole game and try understand reasons whey Abby/Ellie make their choices. Lev story was interesting at some point.

In my opinion - whole scenario is, let say... original, but original doesn't mean it's good and scenario writer lead this game in wrong direction - this is not a "hate", that's only my opinion.
Game is very popular and make a lot of noise in the games world, but that's not mostly a "good noise" and financial success is based only because a lot of people(including me) waited for this game almost half decade after amazing first game.
Writer let window open for Part 3, but I'm sure that will not be such successful opening like Part 2. I'm not even sure that TLOU IP can be saved after Part 2...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was totally in love with first part of the game. It was my best of the best titles. Played on PS3 and PS4 several times. And I was expecting and waiting for Part 2 as I was diving and I run out of oxygen, and Part 2 was my oxygen. But after playing Part 2, I had such bad fillings about it. I had a filling that I was betrayed. That place where oxygen was suppose to be - it was none. This "gay" think is spoiled a lot of titles of 2020, but it's not only for this. Story for me was bad. And game play to play as protagonist was not the best idea. Thank you for your attention. Expand

As a huge fan of the first game, the Last of Us 2 managed to surprise and amaze me in ways far beyond my expectations. It gave me an experience that I will never forget.

The game play is very similar to the first game, but improved upon in numerous ways such as the added dodge functionality that makes melee fights much more exciting. I am personally not a great fan of stealth-style game play, but in this case making the choice between being sneaky or going in weapons blazing is a lot of fun at all times.

The graphics (especially the lighting), sounds, voices, characters and landscapes are among the best if not the best I have ever seen or heard on any platform. I played the game alone, in a fairly dark room with headphones and on a relatively high difficulty. It was a really intense experience that left me with a pounding heart many times.

The biggest part of general criticism seems to be the story and the characters that drive it. I personally must strongly disagree with this assessment but I understand where it's coming from. Where the first game was more of a character driven blockbuster, the second game is much more nuanced and calm and puts the player in uncomfortable situations and perspectives. I personally enjoyed the heck out of this very grown up approach. It kept me interested and engaged every minute and left me wanting more. But if you were expecting a linear progression of game one in a more standard Hollywood style sequel, you might be disappointed. For me, maybe because I've also gotten older, it was the best storytelling I have ever experienced in a game (or movie).

For me, the worst thing was that the came had to end at some point. The ending was a bit abrupt, but served well as a conclusion.

I would give 11/10 if possible - this is why I play games. It has instantly become one if my favorite games of all time and I applaud Naughty Dog for being so brave with this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite all the hate this game got I still think it was a really great game though it did have some flaws. Here's why:

When Abby killed Joel it was understood that this person is to be hated as she has just demolished one of the most beloved protagonists in video game history. During the first ten hours of the game ( played as Ellie) my rage for Abby was building up and I didn't give a flying **** who I was killing to get my hands on her. It was all like that until we come across Nora. She's the first friend of Abby's that we actually get to talk to. After that encounter, you can see that Ellie is shaken but still continues to move forward. She goes to the aquarium and kills Mel and Owen who I didn't care much for but again Ellie is ****ing disturbed to learn that the lady she just killed is pregnant. Yada Yada Yada Abby comes in and kills Jesse (Who I personally liked), grabs Tommy, and points a gun at Ellie. At that moment I wanted every bad thing to happen to Abby and had nothing but hatred for that character.

Then the screen goes black. Time runs back and you're playing as Abby from four years back. At this point, I realized why this game got so much hate. You play as the person who killed Joel. During the ten hours of the game, I didn't connect one bit with Abby or her dumb friends. I didn't feel bad for killing them and I just wanted to go back to playing as Ellie. Personally I found the Abby gameplay pretty fun but I just didn't enjoy being here. You do get to see why Abby wanted to kill Joel and I started getting her side of the story a bit.

We come across Yara and Lev. After helping them out a bit Abby loses all the respect she got from me for helping these scars by wanting to see if her retarded boyfriend was okay. After a scene I wish I can erase from my mind, she
goes back to help Yara and Lev. During this time you get to know them a bit more. But when you go to the hospital with Lev that's when I start liking Abby a bit more. The time with her and Lev reminded me of the time with Joel and Ellie from the first game. They bond a bit and Lev even tries to open up. We see Abby not being selfish and caring for the safety and well being of Lev and Yara.

During the sniper scene, I really ****ing hated whoever was behind that scope. I couldn't wait to get to him and **** him up, but then we realize that the sniper that we were hating on was Tommy. It's really interesting to see that perspective can change a lot and that's what naughty dog was trying to show us in this game.

When we get back from the island I kinda felt bad for her. She just lost her group, everyone she worked with thinks she's a snake, and when she opens the aquarium door shes gonna find Mel and Owen dead on the floor, she lost everything. I felt bad for her but I didn't really care for her at that point that much that I would be sad if Ellie randomly popped up and shot her in the head. I think I was more attached to Lev than I was to Abby. His story seemed more interesting and I saw him as a likable character. He was literally the reason I liked Abby even if it was just a bit.

It's weird because at the theatre I didn't want Abby to die but then SHE KILLS fricking TOMMY!! (or I thought). I felt really bad playing as Abby and beating the **** out of Ellie because I wanted Abby dead for killing Tommy. I had confused feelings for her. I think Naughty Dog thought that by the end of the ten hours you would be attached to her or something but that obviously didn't happen with most players.

It's crazy how if Ellie didn't leave to find Abby again in Santa Barbara, Ellie would've been happy with her family but Abby and Lev would've died, but Ellie did go and Abby and Lev lived and probably moved to the fireflies base to live a happy life while Ellie lost her two fingers, lost Dina (not confirmed), and couldn't keep the promise with Tommy.

We get to see the flashback of Ellie's last conversation with Joel and it was a really beautiful moment.

THE FLAWS: First and foremost let's get to the fact that Joel would've never revealed his name or entered a building to a group of armed strangers. That was just bad writing. Mel going to combat was stupid plus Joel saved Abby but she still killed him making Abby's logic a bit confusing. I didnt connect with Abby's friends that much as the game intended to.

Overall the game had the best graphics on the PS4 so far. The writing wasn't all awful it was just not sequenced properly and it could've been way better (Like if we played as Abby before killing Joel). Again the flashbacks were really well-timed and wholesome. The gameplay was pretty fun. The story wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was really interesting seeing the other side of the story. It wasn't as good as the first game but I wouldn't blatantly give it a 0 for no good reason.

A beautiful game world, showing off the strength of the PS4, and highlighting how far games have come since the first addition of The Last of Us, the second game has a lot to live up to. And in my opinion it lives up to it. The story is interesting and unique, and had me thinking about my actions as Ellie as I slowly learnt about the characters I was once hunting on the Abby side of the story. This was a really effective way of telling the story, as it slowly dawned on me that the people who I was killing as Ellie were people, who had lives and meaning. It wasn’t the same as killing infected, although I slowly realised that Ellie was falling deeper and deeper into this need for revenge that was actually slowly eating her away. It is first seen when Ellie decides to go after Abby instead of joining Jesse to help Tommy. When Ellie decides to try and get revenge for Joel instead of saving Joel’s brother, I knew that Ellie was getting tunnel visioned by her need for justice. And I think this is echoed once again when she leaves the farm.

And in the end she realises this. It is a beautiful character arc that really shows how the characters in The Last of Us 2 are alive and almost real.

The writing isn’t as good, the character development is poor for new and existing characters. Old characters like Joel, Tommy and Ellie (ESPECIALLY Joel) are written very out of character with ridiculously poor excuses as to why they’re written out of character. Joel was treated like some random NPC. Abby is okay, I want to like her. But she’s too forced and thrown into your face. I hate pretty much everybody on her “team,” Owen, Mel - gosh I really hate Mel, etc. Yara and Lev were fine. But the whole Abby + Yara and Lev felt very.... well, forced. I love the new shambler and rat king. I absolutely adore the more intelligent AI. This story could have been much better though, but it just didn’t pan out well. Also, the HUGE amount of false advertising in every single trailer basically telling us it’s about Ellie, and that Joel will be embarking on this new revenge journey with Ellie because he “won’t let her do this on her own.” Lots of lying, and it’s disgusting that Naughty Dog would lie to that degree just to make money off old long time fans. Unfortunately, the problem is that they wanted this game to be about “hate” and I guess they did such a good job that people literally hate the game lol. Jokes aside, I will still replay the game, but it certainly won’t be for the story. Expand

And I see the game as a masterpiece consisting of both games and not each part on its own. For me, the characters, the story, the character development, the atmosphere, brutality, music and sound effects and graphics of this game were really the best I have ever played in my life. Of course I get why many fand are disappointed about the first part of the story - of course it killed me as well and was like: for real? Now I have to play Abby for hours and hours? All I want to do is kill ber and take revenge. But somehow ND managed it to make her appeal like a good human bei g so in the end I really didn‘t want Elli to kill her. Also ND showed us that pure revenge is destroying more than it gives you even if you feel facilitated for 3 secs. For me this game is a masterpiece and I‘m kinda sad and frustrated that NO GAME (probably until TLOU3) will ever come close to this masterpiece endlevel of story telling and video game. Man I am greatful to be alive and being able to play TLOU when it was first released. Thank you with all my heart ND and all the other teams who have participated in this game - you changed my life!

From playing the first game and enjoying it by playing it 5 more times. This sequel does not have replay-ability. As soon as the game ended I did not care to go back and beating it in the hardest difficulty, I did not care to go back and 100% the game. It was a done to done put the game down and go enjoy another game type of deal. As I would always tell my friends when it came to fan favorite movies, animes, and books. A good story has to have an impactful plot, it can come in a character death, in character development, or as a reader gather more points to the story to make it whole. In this game they went with deaths. The character they chose for deaths very agreeable into which ones would be more impactful. Now the way it’s executed is a different thing. This game did not do a good job in pacing out their “impactful plot points”. Throughout my gameplay I deeply felt the story was moving too quick. So when it came to the games impactful moments it didn’t feel like they were the main characters, it didn’t feel like those were the characters all the people cherished. It truly felt like some side character who you just met and died at the end of that journey. Even Henry and his little bother from the first game was more impactful than the main characters who died this game.
Enough about story plot, I’m going to get to my point. I was truly disappointed in how it all turned out, I wanted this game for the longest. I was sitting impatiently waiting for the moment for TLoU2 to come out since it was announced to only get..... this.

One of the best games ever made. Anyone who hates this is incapable of actually critically thinking about a game.

the game's story is the worst that I've experienced in a very long time but I'm giving it a 4 because of how much of a technical masterpiece and the accessibility options which are amazing

One of the worst "sequels" to ever be made.

Technically, its absolutely gorgeous but there's very little "game" in this game. You could say the same for its predecessor but at least that game had a surprisingly warm story and set of characters. This game is just unpleasant almost from the get-go. The more you play, the less you enjoy it. By the end, I was almost on autopilot. It felt

This game is just unpleasant almost from the get-go. The more you play, the less you enjoy it. By the end, I was almost on autopilot. It felt like work to finish it. This is a cardinal sin in gaming. Games should keep you engaged and wanting to play, this does the exact opposite.

I'm just glad its over with so I can go play something else... I'll give it a 2 out of 10 for the great visuals.

I really enjoyed playing this game. In my opinion, the inclusion of minorities wasn’t forced, actually, they weren’t such a big deal, which makes it cool, because this topics shouldn’t be ‘a deal’. Besides, the story wasn’t at all linear and the ending portraits the paths of life which are guided by the choices we make. It was a little bit sad and made me feel sad, but that’s life, right?I really enjoyed playing this game. One of the best PS4 games! I know part of the storyline is hurtful. But the characters were built so successful which made their choices resonable. Hurtful, but understandable. I know the theme of this game is about hate. But at last you will find out that forgivingness is the most important. So I love this game.

To start this game is really good, like I can’t explain how much of a good time I had playing this game. But to keep it simple the amazingly improved combat system keeps every battle in the game as fresh and original, and incredible graphics and score add another level to game, and the story while not everyone’s favorite kind is one that grows on you and makes you think about your actions and if they are justified. This game is a must play for an PS4 owner.

Masterpiece. One of the best games I played since I started gaming in 1988. I don’t understand the complaints. People can’t appreciate the emotional complexity of the story I guess...? the story is amazing, characters are amazing.
I played the first one, which I loved, but this at another level, it is a Masterpiece.
You can tell there’s been a huge amount work put on that game: Everything

This game is not just about revenge or a cliché story that contains a hero and a villain, this game shows the real consequence for the choices and actions that Ellie and Abby take during the game. Revenge brings loneliness and does not fill the void caused by trauma. This game surpasses the first in all aspects, with incredible graphics, huge expansion of maps, advancement of the combat system, sensational setting, incredible development of the story and magnificent facial expressions, even of the NPCs and enemies. This game is incredible and makes us reflect a lot on our choices. A game to be played at least once in your life. Expand

The best game I ever played, has a perfect and deep history that brings the first game consequences to another landing. Like Neil Druckman said: “No one is prepared for The Last of Us Part II”.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
