    The Last of Us Part II takes that game, and throws it in a dumpster then sets it on fire. The characters you loved from the first game are not the same. The bold and harsh decisions made for you in the first game were justified. In this game they are forced and used as shock value. The gameplay is extremely repetitive by the half way point its almost tiresome to play. The cut scenes make up 11 hours of this game, yes, over half of this game you are forced to watch this hideous story play out. The other half you are forced to play as a character 99% of people do not wish to play.

    The hate on this game is not because of the social agendas being pushed so heavily, rather, its drawn out repetitive gameplay, terribly written story, and Neils promise to us (Part 1 fans) that this game was meant for us. I cannot believe that you built such an amazing world and characters only to tear it down rather than build it up.    … Expand

Why Neil? i know that you want to create SHOCK FACTOR but then you didn't solve anything?? i don't even bothered to finish the game after the first 2 hours to be honest :) it is a disaster to offend other community such as LGBTQ+.     If you close your eyes on logical inconsistences and part 1, this game can really surprise you from hate to real feelings and empathy. BUT this is valid if you drop the ending entirely and stop playing nearly at 80% of the game, after Elly and Abby meeting in theatre. The other part is just so dumb and trash, that I have no words to describe it

    I knew better than to get my hopes up too high for TLOU2 as most sequels are up against something their predecessors aren't; expectations. That said, I went into this with an open mind, knowing the game I loved before was over, and there may very well be developments that I won't be too pleased with in the new one.

    The opening reminds the player of the struggles you played through with Ellie in the first game. The hard fought battle to get halfway across the country and the fight to save her when she was going to be killed in the process of finding a cure. It's evident how much Joel's grown to view her as family. Even, dare I say, have found happiness after all. And then, almost immediately, NaughtyDog smashes it all to pieces.

    There's a lot of praise for the graphics and polished mechanics but I really don't care, like at all, about that. The most exhilarating part of TLOU was the story. The world you're put into and the characters lives you follow make the whole gameplay experience a true adventure that keeps you buzzing from one cutscene to the next. If I'm honest, the gameplay itself in the first one was always a bit wonky and took some adjusting to get comfortable with. TLOU2 takes all of that away. What's left is a sad and hopeless trip from one miserable scene to another with awkwardly forced LGBT campaign ads peppered throughout becaussse... equality? Not only does the dreariness of the circumstances really take it out of you, the attempt to make the game feel open world by making 4 or 5 paths to get to same spot extra boring when they're all empty. The reward for exploring is minuscule and usually barely worth the effort. The occasional puzzle also feels elementary and disjointed to what's going on. It's not creative or fun to solve, it's just time consuming.

    The biggest failure of the entire game is the characters. It nearly completely loses all grasp of the character traits, which were so thoroughly illustrated, in the first game. Even the characters in the current game seem to make decisions that are bizarre based on what the game shows you about them up until the new shock moment. One second they're clever and calculated and the next they're rash. One moment they're compassionate and the next they're cold blooded. None of it makes sense.

    It's the biggest cop out to make a crap nonsensical story and then blame the fact that it's crap on the assumed hatred of the people who call you on it. Give me a break.

    For the love of God, save yourself some money and heartache and pretend that this story ended when Joel got Ellie back to Tommy's.    … Expand

    Instead, we've got a game that makes you hate yourself during the whole playthrough. I don't want to play something that forces me to watch all my loved characters suffer or become some sort of a monster.     The gameplay is really the same, which wasn't cutting edge even back in 2013 and now it's just straight-up boring. The violence levels are absurd, which is weird coming from a person who was giggling like a small child while playing Doom Eternal recently. I'm really sorry, but as a person who had to put down his dog, I don't want to play a game that forces me to kill one while watching her suffering and then make rub it in my face and make me feel like an ****
    And the sex scene... One of the dumbest and most disgusting sex scenes I've seen on screens. Great job with "not sexualizing" women.
    The only upside is the graphics, which are gorgeous. The animations are top-notch as well.
    This game should have been great, but it really sucks what it turned out to be. And it really sucks for all those developers and artists and Naughty Dog, because you can see how much work was put in it and how many crunches they had to go through. But unfortunately, this game is ruined by bleak, horrible characters and even worse plot, that was written with a whole purpose of taking everything you loved about the first part, ripping it in pieces, and setting it on fire together with your house.    … Expand

    A 20 hour long generic revenge story that doesn't even have the decency to let you get said revenge which you have been working towards for the last 20 hours worth of game play. Completely unsatisfying. As well as an obvious LGBT influence which only feels forced.

If you are a fan of terrible writing, gameplay from 2013, and a cast of empty, lifeless characters that you're forced to play as and emphasize with this is the game for you. Out of a 25ish hour long game seeing Joel die two hours in is a stupid way to start a game. It leaves you wondering where the hell can the game go from this? Hunt abby for 23 hours? Oh wait nah, you play as Abby for half of it. The character that just killed Joel you are forced to play as for half the game. And the end, you get to play as Ellie but wait! You dont get revenge, no you let Abby go and now Ellie has nothing because her family left her. Terrible writing.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just want to preface this by stating that I had little issue with any political ideals or anything like that. I know a lot of people are going out of their way to dismiss all low reviews as bigotry, but this certainly not the case with this review. My issues were solely with what will be discussed below.

    First what I liked:
    -Overall gameplay is relatively unchanged from the first game for better or worse. There are some additional movement features and the ability to go prone but otherwise there is not much more depth than last time. If you enjoyed the core gameplay of the first game then you will probably at least enjoy that aspect of the game.

    - The graphics are certainly impressive on par with that of other first party Sony titles. Some of the skyboxes were breathtaking.

    -Small interactions with the environment that added extra storytelling. Like being able to play the guitar or playing fetch with the dog are nice little slice of life segments that at least bring some light to the utter darkness that is the story.

    -Dina was a well written and fleshed out character who stood out among the rest of the new cast.

    What I did not like:

    -The story. Wow. I don't even know where to start? If the main reason you enjoyed the first game was the dynamic between Joel and Ellie then stay as far away from this title as possible. The actions that are made by them 90% of the time are so completely out of character it is mind boggling. Joel telling his name to a group of random strangers? Ellie killing a dog and then berating the dead dog while looking at its corpse? Enough to make your stomach churn to be quite frank and that is really just the tip of the iceberg.

    -The new cast aside from Dina were either forgettable or insufferable. The only one that really needs to be talked about is Abby. All the qualities that made Joel and Ellie likable from the first game are completely absent with Abby. Abby is extremely selfish and rarely does she ever make a choice that is not in her own interests. The narrative constantly tries to paint her in a positive light yet her actions are perceived completely different by the player. I think a lot of this is due to the fact that when trying to paint Abby in a positive light they constantly tried to do the opposite to Ellie to force changes in perception.

    -The ending is an extremely unsatisfying bait and switch that leaves the player confused by Ellie's actions or should I say non-action. The whole plot of the game was about how revenge is bad yet Abby got her revenge and is in a better place for it. Ellie tried getting her revenge and decides not to at the end and her life is now in shambles. If the message was "revenge is bad" then I just don't see how that was translated in an effective manner.

    In conclusion I can't help but feel that the writer feels a disconnect or sizeable dislike with the main protagonists of his established work. After Joel's demise in what was essentially the tutorial I could have already surmised that the author did not like the protagonist, but the author takes this to another level and actually inserts a detailed depiction of themselves spitting on the corpse of the character which left me to wonder what caused such a hatred for one's creation? Was it merely just for shock value? If so that seemed more amateurish than self-inserting in your own work of fiction. Regardless I will certainly be hesitant to invest time, money, or emotion on a Naughty Dog product ever again and I will certainly never touch a work of Neil Druckmann's again as long as I exist. Not due to any kind of political issues, because to be quite frank Neil and I probably agree across the board on every political issue, but because I believe he is an absolute abysmal storyteller who does not truly care about the worlds or characters he is responsible for.    … Expand

JOEL dying is acceptable, the way he died was not. 20 years of living experience during the zombie apocalypse is not going to be erased by 4 years of living peacefully... Instead of getting wiser, Joel became dumber. Joel should know that he is likely a wanted man, and so does his brother Tommy... Giving out their REAL names to strangers they just met was absolutely dumb on their part which was uncharacteristic of Zombie Apocalypse Veterans. For a game that boasts of realism of the zombie apocalypse that sure hell was unrealistic. Joel was a beloved character, it is only proper to at the very least give him a proper and realistic death that still keeps his character.

    Also, before release... ND sold us Ellie and Joel! Not that ABBY person.    … Expand

    Imagine walking into an art gallery and looking at a Picasso painting. Now imagine, I’d take the painting off the wall, **** on it after being constipated for weeks, let it dry and then hang it up back onto the wall. The critics like IGN would probably argue because of its shock factor its great art. Really though it’s dried **** on a great painting. In a nutshell the dry **** is The Last Of Us 2.

    Playing this game is like living out Neil Druckmann’s twisted fantasies from over the top gore, to having to kill dogs and sheer manipulation of the player. This guy is literally a one hit wonder for writing the last of us story years ago. He has little contribution in the Uncharted series and his main accomplishment was the first game, where he was heavily guided by Bruce Straley. You have to give the arts team credit for this game. It is probably one of the best looking games on console. A lot of people are praising the gameplay mechanics......... Naughty dog never had great gameplay mechanics. There is literally 1000 other games out there that do shooting, melee combat or stealth way better than this game. Overall this is a terrible game and hopefully it will be reflected in the number of preorders for future Naughty Dog games. I will be more cautious with their next game.    … Expand

    This game is a slap in the face and just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The way they treated Joel’s death is extremely disrespectful to his character and he should’ve had more respect then how they treated him. The amount of plot holes in the story was way to many for a good game (which this game is not). They treated the men like trash in this game because they were trying to force a strong female lead’s(which I have no problem with and I encourage) instead of having the female lead’s happen naturally like so many games and movies before them. I wanted to give this game a chance because the last game was a masterpiece and this was far from it. The only good thing I would say for this the gameplay was nice, smooth, and I like some of the mechanics they put in, but with that to say the story was trash and it shows. I would’ve given Last of us part 2 a higher score if it wasn’t for Naught Dogs reaction to the spoiler leaks and how they went about people talking about them, it was childish and not professional and I don’t know if I’ll support Naughty Dog after this because of this whole fiasco. Anyway back to the game with my final thought I think this game had a message of hate which didn’t sit right with me after the game and the whole story was way far off from the original plot of a Zombie apocalypse game. They missed so many opportunities to make this game a great game, but chose the path of a narrative that the people are sick of seeing in the media all over the world with that being said I say don’t get this game and save your money for Ghost of Tsushima.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wrack my brains trying to figure out how such a story-driven game powerhouse like NaughtyDog missed the mark so hard you'd think they held the gun backwards. So here's my drop in the bucket review.

    •Pros: The game looks fantastic. Water reflections and physics show what the PS4 can truly do compared to even respectably built gaming PCs. The sound design is crisp, audio occlusion is realistic, and the voice acting is pretty good. Really conveys the emotions the characters are feeling at that moment. The melee combat has more crunch to it. Each blow is really felt, in the way the camera moves, the motions of the attacker and recipient, and the dodge mechanic makes it more than just a 'Mash square til they commit aliven't' simulator. Gunplay is solid, though the default sensitivity is a little higher than the previous entry's, but you can fix that simply in the controls menu. Crafting and upgrades are still here, and they arguably feel a lot better to do. Personal upgrades go beyond 'reload faster' and 'at least pretend you have forearm muscles' due to the sway. There's a couple of flashbacks that show small snippets of the previous game, and they have updated graphics as well. Particularly the scene where Joel lies to Ellie right at the end, there's so much more emotion and weight to even just her eyes. There's an enormously varied Accessibility section in the options that range from auto-aim for motor handicapped people to replacing every event in the game with a different sound cue paired with text-to-speech so the game can be played by actual blind people. The difficulty can be cut into smaller chunks of personalized merit; you can either choose a flat difficulty that makes every aspect the same as the difficulty you chose, or you can choose to make your character extremely squishy but the enemies as well so no one becomes a bullet sponge, not even yourself. Atop that, the ability to change how much your allies help you in battle, how aggressively the enemies attack you, and even the amount of supplies that will spawn in the game. The game can be as easy or as difficult as YOU want. Also, you can pet the dog.

    •Cons: The story itself is oblique, and quite possibly delivered in the wrong order. It's a confusing mish-mash of revenge that seems to try and teach us that revenge isn't worth getting... when the antagonist gets their happy ending in the first 2 hours of the game, and Ellie is left at the end with... nothing. Lost her girl, lost her friends, lost her fingers... She can't even play the guitar, her version of Joel's watch. Where his reminded him of his daughter, Ellie remembers Joel through the guitar. The AI, all-in-all for a modern release is quite sub-par. If you watch AI In Gaming on YouTube you'll understand how the AI in TLOU1 worked, and 2's really sees no improvement. Enemies completely ignore your allies while you are in stealth, they have a vision cone that consists of about 35° in front of them that ends after 15 feet like they're all geriatric with cataracts thicker than their thumb. They still blatantly say out loud every thought they have, I'm surprised one of them didn't talk about what they had for breakfast to themselves while they walk on the other side of your chest-high-cover. They added dogs that more or less act like the Cosmic Clones from Super Mario Galaxy where they trail about 5 seconds behind you when they 'get your scent', so you gotta keep moving you can't really filter them all through the same door... as easily, anyway. No significant changes to enemies or enemy types, be they infected or human. On top of all of that, the cast of characters you regularly see throughout the story are all completely unlikable two-dimensional reflections of a single personality point and nothing more. Chaste, or brash. Sarcastic or serious. It's like the developers were afraid we might have to think a little too much to understand a person's motives so they just made them walk around with a sandwich board that says 'Hello, I am {Insert emotion here}.' Another thing that's more weird than anything is Neil Druckmann's self-inclusion in the game. It's not the first time a game has used an employee's likeness, this started even as far back as Perfect Dark for the N64, where a lot of the faces were developers at the studio. No, the thing that makes his point-for-point everything-but-name inclusion is that he seems to exist solely to tell the antag-protagonist to do the bad things she wants to push the story... and to bone her in a sex scene. Straight up just bareback porking her. 'Ellie is a lesbian' seems kind of phoned in, as well. We knew from Left Behind that she was definitely into girls, and she seemed rather unhappy at seeing Bill's dirty magazine of naked men. It doesn't push LGBT at all in an impactful way, either. It just seems to be pandering to me. No serious issues like facing hardships brought about by their sexuality, just a mention in an early cutscene, no more.    … Expand

While TLOU's story and gameplay were great, it was Joel and Ellie themselves that made The Last of Us a true masterpiece. You see, the core of The Last of Us isn't the zombies or the violence or even the gameplay itself. The core of the Last of Us is and always will be Joel and Ellie despite what Naughty Dog and all these pseudo game critics want you to believe.

    Joel, one of the best fictional characters that I've ever seen, is completely disrespected and cast aside in favor of a new character named Abby. At this point, everyone and their mother's **** has heard of Abby and what she does to Joel. Not only does she kill Joel but she bashes his brains in with a golf club in front of Ellie, and Abby's associate (who is just a stand in for Neil Druckmann) spits on Joel's corpse, and this all happens towards the start of the game.

    Right off the bat, its clear that Naughty Dog has lost their way and forgot what drew the fans to TLOU in the first place. or maybe they just didn't give a **** TLOU 2 wants to make it very clear that Joel is a piece of **** who deserved death because he killed a lot of people but I think that actively goes against what the first game was going for. TLOU 1 showed us a world in which people cast aside notions of right and wrong and put survival above all else, Joel being one of those people. It told a complex narrative and presented complex characters who were neither good or bad but HUMAN.
    TLOU 2 yeets all that **** out the window and just says that Joel is a piece of **** who doomed humanity and we should actively root for Abby (It doesn't help that Abby is so ****ing unlikable).

    TLOU 2 wants the player to realize the cycle of violence is bad but none of this applies to Abby, who gets away with EVERYTHING. So Ellie murders countless people just to get to Abby but once she finally has the chance to kill her, she just has an abrupt realization that violence and revenge is a big no no so Abby gets to walk away.

    _First half of the game makes the player forget a little bit about that dumb-Joel nonsense until the game makes you play as the character you hate, the one who killed Joel.. 10 hours of boring redondent gameplay with characters you don't care about , hoping for a final revenge..

In the end, the first game remains superior both story wise, character development and gameplay and the second is definitely not the game of this generation. With these budgets you expect the directors to be brilliant and life touching but I guess Kojima is the only man right now who is able to do it. Suggestion: lower the budgets as you are not able to have decent triple A and focus on gameplay rather than story as you are very weak on the latter.… Expand

It has beautiful graphics and nice gameplay similar to the first game, but this cannot hide or mask the huge flaws of the story. So for me to see what has happened with the story, which i believe the first game has one of the best stories in all of entertainment media, is so disgusting. It feels as if the writers wanted to force upon us an agenda that none of us were asking for. It didn't matter that the characters are gay, trans, or otherwise to me. I was disappointed with the story, which i waited 5 years for. Sure the opinion of whether the story is good or not is subjective but the way things happen and the way that certain characters act uncharacteristically is so stupid. The fact that after abby kills joel the only thing and i mean the ONLY thing us the player would want is to kill her, we have to play as her for 10 HOURS, WHAT!? How did that get through 7+ years of development and they said "yeah thats great, leave that in there they'll never see it coming" Of course we wouldn't, its the dumbest thing that anyone could write. D&D would be able to come up with a better story and you all know how GOT is in season 8. And the cherry on top of this **** sundae, is you finally find abby as ellie, you have her literal throat in your hands and you let her go!? Because revenge is bad!? Even though abby had a **** revenge spree the whole game and she gets off SCOT FREE!? BUT REVENGE IS BAD!?!?! I haven't been this disappointed in a story since the last jedi and im not even that big of a star wars fan. Just because its subversive doesn't make it a good story. I feel like all of my favorite IP's are just getting butchered by these agendas that have NOTHING to do with it. When are creators going to learn that the more you try to force what YOU think we should believe in, the less we care about it. This game feels like it was poorly written and it should never deserve high praise for anything besides the fact that it did put a spotlight on the LGBT community as a positive thing but my main problem with this entire game is the fact that it's supposed to be a revenge story but the only person that got revenge for what they were trying to get revenge for was the person that everyone is hating on even though there's nothing really to hate on her for yes she's not aesthetically pleasing or that much of a relevant character in anything of what we've had and the fact that they killed off from Joel and how they did it was subpar at best and we should never try to say that this game is worth the money that it is asking for because there are major plot holes in the entire game and Ellie from the first game feels non existence her character drive or ark feels small she has no effect on me at all and that sucks because I was such a big fan of the first game yes this entire thing of zombies really scares me and it's a good thing that it does because I play the game simply for the story because I love the fact that Joel was able to redeem being a father in the first one and somewhat of it in the second game which is okay but still they should have went with his death a little different they should have actually killed Abby because without those revenge I don't know this game is just terrible and it should never get anything but a bombed review because it destroyed the legacy of The last of Us and you should never even attempt to try to pick up this game because you'll be wasting your money and wasting your time… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think first time I heard about this game in 2016. Back then one designer works for Naughty dog, writes hers linkedin page about the design of Ellie. Like she was 4-5 year older than the first game. After that I heard a rumor, something like "Joel is dying". I just like I hope it won't happen. When the first trailer comes up, when I heard Joel's voice I was in relief.

    I pre-ordered the game in October 2019, game delayed after again again. Then Sony decided to give our money back without asking. I was like "wtf, I can wait, why the hell are you giving the money back". After I got my money back I watch the latest trailers. I was expecting a couple of things like more black people and more gay/lesbian/transexual etc. because that is the new trend. That is ok for me.

    I just re-pre-order the game again, waiting to download and open its lock. I played it 3 days, it took almost 30 hours. I cried in the scenes like Joel's death, Tommy's got shot and Ellie's barn scene.

    I played the first game in both ps3 and ps4. I bought all dlc's in ps3, all finished it. Also I'm collecting the trophies of the games, so I finished it on Grounded mode etc.

    After I played a lot of times, Ellie is like a daughter to me. While I played the dlc's, I feel like Joel is a father to me.

    Comes to the game again, Killing my father, I will begin my revenge with my friends and my uncle. Doing that my uncle got crippled, my friend is dead. I killed almost everybody, but not the main character. So I decided to go back, living with my lover and her son. After everything seems settled, crippled uncle comes to me and said he found the main character. I decided to go hundred of kilometers to find the character, almost killed couple of times.

    In the end, decided to not to get her revenge. That is because she can see Joel good in her dreams back. That isn't a storytelling, that is something like Stephen King movie. Everything is good, but ending is soooo bad so it ruins almost everything.

    I give that score for music, athmosphere etc.

    Last note to Neil Druckmann, when you say something, you need to keep behind it. When the people talks about the overpowered girl, you said "we don't wanna sexualize the women". But in the game that very character get **** literally. In that scene we can see Owen's **** is bigger than hers.    … Expand

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
