A great time. Highly recommend especially if you enjoy Star Trek, however even those who arent fans will find fun here. The combination of ground and space combat is great

Perfect World's done a good job, in general, converting this PC game to PS4. There are notable bugs, such as the player camera unpredictable zooming out, or cinematic where the character is standing with their legs half way in the floor. I would have hoped they'd have addressed these minor flaws before releasing the game, especially since they gave no indication as to the actual release date.

On that topic, I would say that while their game is good, the company's communication is dire. The community isn't shy about raising the various bugs as issues, so you'd think that Perfect World would want to address the issues head on and explain their plan of action. No luck there - just silence and continued efforts to push extra content.

The game itself is fun. I'm a Trekkie, so flying the ships from the films and TV series is a real fanboy moment. Immersion is great in parts, with pretty good voice acting and impressive set pieces. However, some missions go the opposite way with either no voice acting, or ones where you wonder whether it's the developers themselves doing it on the cheap. There doesn't seem to be any consistency with where voice-overs are placed. But considering the original game had none, they've done well to catch up to the 21st century.

The music is generally sub standard and after 30mins of listening to it at the beginning, I turned it off and made a Star Trek Spotify playlist. Problem solved - but not one I should have had to solve.

Space combat certainly carries this game. Flying past beautifully rendered nebulae, or though asteroid belts, lit by cracking solar storms is brilliant. There's some massive space battles, which are unlike any space sim game I've played before and are truly epic.

Beaming down to a planet offers a similarly impressive graphic haul and the new lighting has massively boosted the game. But, the ground combat is still jerky and archaic, so don't get your hopes up there. It's only redeemed by fun class-specific abilities, like turrets and shields etc.

Overall, this game has, without a doubt, improved since I last played 3 years ago. The missions are more coherent and are all story driven, having done away with the generic 'patrol missions'. However, for casual Trek gamers, you'll struggle to look past the bugs and average combat gameplay. For hardcore fans, you'll likely put up with it and allow your imagination to carry you through the ranks. It definitely picks up, the longer you persevere.

While the F2P parts are there with monetization, it never feels like it's extortion like most other F2P games. It's old and the ground missions aren't the best, but it has a lot of replay value, they do a good job of balancing the game and adding new content where while you may have not played in a year, you can jump back on and you're still pretty much in the same place you were. Only reason i'm not giving it a 10 is because of how a lot of the cool ships are locked behind loot boxes. Expand

After trying most of the mmos on ps4, i can say this one is the best. From a scamming perspective at least. Not sure why, maybe CBS is keeping stupid on a short leash. U can get anything by farming, and farming is easy. U do anything and u gain stuff and dilithium. And u can sell dilithium for zens for the store. It takes a few months to get to good builds ofc. There's a lot to like about Star Trek Online, even for players who aren't hardcore Star Trek fans or crazy people like me, but it does ask to be put up with to a certain extent. As for the console versions, it's also not all there yet, almost literally. At the same time, it's hard to name a more overtly generous free-to-play title on the current market, and it's worth a shot, for both Trek devotees and the merely Warp-curious.

Star Trek Online is a game that casual and dedicated Star Trek fans should check out. While it doesn’t beat out Neverwinter as far as mechanics goes, it allows players to inhabit a fascinating facsimile of the universe, exploring, undertaking complex missions and always boldly going forward (because we can’t find reverse).

This is one of those games that could use a little more time in the oven.
