    Having played this on and off for the past several years on PC (and I even purchased the lifetime subscription), this is in a sad state right now. This is first few PC seasons bad. Mind you, the game has only been out for less than two weeks, but the lessons PWE should have learned from glitches (and fixes thereof) on the    Note: This is for the state of the game as of September 17, 2016.

    Having played this on and off for the past several years on PC (and I even purchased the lifetime subscription), this is in a sad state right now. This is first few PC seasons bad. Mind you, the game has only been out for less than two weeks, but the lessons PWE should have learned from glitches (and fixes thereof) on the PC version did not translate over to the console versions.

    Here are my main issues and grievances as of the playable version available during this review:

    - This game is WAY too streamlined. I get it, this is a console, not a PC...but it doesn't excuse the extreme amount of streamlining that PWE enacted on this game to put this game on consoles. The interface alone is stripped down and wonky. Unless you can constantly remember where something is in the heat of battle, you are screwed. Even then, the console controls tend to not be favorable for certain tasks (having to use a wheel to select an ability in the middle of battle is obnoxious).

    - The mini-map. Oh god, the mini-map. You cannot zoom that thing in, so you are constantly having to pop up the bigger map to find where objectives are.

    - GLITCHES! There are several noted gamebreaking glitches in the current version of the game. There is at least one that will not let you start the mission (Diplomacy) and requires you to skip it to proceed through the rest of the story arc (else it crashes the game back to the XMB every time you try to play the mission - many reports of this on the web)...and leaves you without the story arc trophy. Story mission glitches, mission procession glitches, graphical/model glitches...did I hop back to PC Season 2???

    - Missing features. With this one, I'm hoping these features do work their way in to the game with successive patches/updates. From my understanding, certain fleet features are missing.

    - Server related issues. Rubberbanding galore is back with a vengeance. Also, be prepared to see Server Not Responding with counting timer more often than you'd like. Come on PWE, with the money you are making with microtransactions, could you not afford better server farms?

    - Pay to win. This is the sad result of free-to-play games. And that lifetime subscription option? Don't bother. Compared to the PC version's lifetime sub, you get jack for that cost. Some sub exclusive items, titles and access to a location that is always dead. That's it. You get that and more, including a monthly 500 Zen stipend, with the PC lifetime sub. What gives? And those eff'ing master keys...

    - Lack of additional contact methods with the GMs. As usual, there are already several bots in the game chat spamming for sale sites for Energy Credits and Master Keys (and a lot of people complaining about being ripped off). While you can report them, the ignore function resets after log off or leaving the zone and coming back. On top of that, how are the players supposed to report bugs to the devs...through the forums? Why not a direct route from the game itself?

    As it stands, this game is a mess. If you are a Star Trek fan, avoid this game for the time being until PWE fixes at least the major issues (the Diplomacy game breaking bug being one of the biggest), or play the PC version which is much more mature as far as bug/glitch fixes go. While this game does have a lot of microtransactions, you can actually ignore most, if not all, of them and still enjoy the game. The big problem will be with starships (you stop receiving new ones around level 40, which stops you at Tier 5 and you will end up needing a Tier 6 ship with the higher levels of 50+). This game has most, if not all, of the story missions, but the issues might distract you from the fun.    … Expand

    This game is among my favorite pc games, and on PC I rate it highly. That said, the ps4 release of this is among the WORST experiences I've ever had. The game started off buggy and lacking all but a skeletal frame of the glory found in the PC version... Fun, but lacking... Then the first patch came in, cementing the console dev team as the worst to have ever existed. Take E.T. on Atari,This game is among my favorite pc games, and on PC I rate it highly. That said, the ps4 release of this is among the WORST experiences I've ever had. The game started off buggy and lacking all but a skeletal frame of the glory found in the PC version... Fun, but lacking... Then the first patch came in, cementing the console dev team as the worst to have ever existed. Take E.T. on Atari, hold it next to this game and it looks good. That's how bad terrible. I'll revise my review when/if the current dev team are ALL sacked and the game is fixed. Until then, 1/10 - worse than Onigiri (game)… Expand

So, like all the others of it's type it's a glitchy mess that has you repeating the same dull as dishwater activities over, and over, and over again. Over an extended period of time you slowly grind out levels and upgrades that allow you to do the same boring activities against slightly more powerful enemies. Rinse and repeat until you hit a wall and feel pressured into dropping money on the game, or you just walk away from it.

    If you're a Star Trek fan you may remember the Starfleet Command series of games. Go and play those games again. Believe me when I say that they do more justice to the Star Trek franchise than this hideous malformed beast of a game. And most importantly, you'll actually have fun playing them.

    Look, Star Trek Online is free to play so just download and try for yourself. Then after a short time delete from your hard drive, put the whole sorry mess out of your mind and chalk it up to experience. Never to repeat again.    … Expand

    Great game ruined COMPLETELY by the worst team of developers to have ever lived. I would give it 1/10, but the game is really that bad in its current abysmal state.

    Did I mention the B-U-G-S ?!!! This Game is in an unbelievable HORRIBLE ALPHA STATE (11/2016)!     This is the crappiest Game I have ever played within the last 30 Years!

    At first I liked it, although it has cheap graphics like a 10 years old Game (and this is already the advanced Version with better Graphics compared to PC), HORRIBLE PRIMITVE ground Gameplay like a 20 Years old RPG or Textadventure, but then I stumbled over more and more BUGS, GLITCHES, STUTTERING, CRASHES and even Missions you cannot start or finish, which leads to further bugs and annoyance! Although I am a huge Star Trek Fan, I really cannot recommend this ATM. Furthermore the Game feels quite overloaded with all its Features, Skills, Abilities and more. You have to study wikis regularly for hours - promised.

    I do not know if the Producer even HAS a Q/A Team, but at best wait at least a 6-12 Months if you want to play and try this crap. Otherwise you will hate yourself when you already got addicted and cannot let loose.

    It's a shame, this Game COULD be quite nice with all its complexity and variety of the Star Trek Universe, but not if you fight the most Time against Bugs and disappointment instead against your Enemies.

    BEWARE! Do not try the PC Version on Windows XP, after 6 Years (!!!) this is STILL THAT buggy, that it destroys your Windows Installation!!! (Corrputs install/uninstall Programs Manager).

    The pc version is a complete mess. One of the most buggy and broken games ive ever played in 20 years. So i cant imagine how bad is the ps4 version, keeping in mind it has all the bugs from pc, and the game is not even half of what the pc version is lol. I would never recommend this game to a pc player, but even less to a console player lol. Its a shame that CBS will never care aboutThe pc version is a complete mess. Voice acting provides some brief amusement for the sheer awfulness of both the script and delivery. Ship combat is fun, ground combat is...not. Graphics and sound well below standard. But, if you own an actualOne for only the hardest of hardcore fans. An already terrible PC game has been ported, terribly, to console.     This is a review for the game on PS4. I downloaded the game with an open mind. I wasn't a Star Trek fan really, but the thought of an open space MMORPG was a bit intriguing. I played for a week so I could get a proper idea of the game.

    There are few things to like about the game. First of all, it is a Trek game so it does a good job staying consistent with the source material. Player    This is a review for the game on PS4. I downloaded the game with an open mind. I wasn't a Star Trek fan really, but the thought of an open space MMORPG was a bit intriguing. I played for a week so I could get a proper idea of the game.

    There are few things to like about the game. First of all, it is a Trek game so it does a good job staying consistent with the source material. Player customization is very deep (as it should be in an MMORPG). The use of guns is a great idea for an MMORPG and item customization is simple enough for anyone to pick up on. And that's just about where it ends.

    For the bad, the game is a buggy mess. Even the areas where their are no chats or other players, it can be a buggy mess. I have a strong connection and it even affected me. Also, the acting from the NPCs is laughable. You don't necessarily need to be Golden Globe or Oscar winners to do voice acting, but that was just awful.

    The missions are a bit linear and the story is meh. You're a guy who takes over the ship after already dealing with a attack and the person who was in your command is killed and then you kill the guy that kills them and......yeah. Just a mess.

    The fighting system is good in theory, but leaves a lot to be desired. They would have done a better job taking a page from Mass Effect, Gears of War, and everything other 3rd person game that has allowed cover fire. Also, could they have made the enemies and more stupid? They dodge from left to right or stand still and just take hits. How about some......difficulty?

    The biggest issue is the game is completely incomplete and lacks a lot of features. I can deal with the pay to win model since at the end of the day, it is a f2p game. However, as long as you can get access to the same content by grinding or playing the game out, I don't particularly mind (even if it takes awhile). But, this is pretty bad. Its not too late for them to fix the issues with this game, but they need to get to work because as of right now.....its just bad.    … Expand

Graphics are at least two generations old (think slightly better than Goldeneye on N64). Animations are clunky and repetitive. Battle is simple stand in place and shoot at enemies who also stand in place and shoot. Missions are boring. I shouldn't sayThe game is hot garbage.     Players will experience bugs and glitches from the very moment they start the game, with the character creation screen being so laggy it is advised to simply skip it, you can re-edit the appearance of your character at a later date.
    From then on gameplay becomes a rollercoaster of popping assets, broken dialogue and cutscenes either distorted beyond all recognition or simply missing. Characters from the various Star Trek shows are shoe-horned in at random points and in many cases lowers the experience to something that feels worthy of a fan-film as characters pause mid-dialogue to throw a reference or in-joke with a "hey guys remember star trek?" nod and a wink to the camera.
    Some missions revolve entirely around these pathetic attempts at nostalgia pulling and special credit must be made to LaVar Burton who's ham-fisted phoned-in performance where he delivers each line of dialogue in such a monotone way you could be forgiven for believing him to genuinely be on the other end of a phone reading off a card. His special mission encompasses exactly 5 minutes of gameplay and uring its debut STO ran a subtle add campaign in regards to a series of podcats LaVar Burton was in, in which he proclaimed his character 'Geordi La Forge" was gay and it was only because of "the oppression by white men" could the audience not see this.

    The rest of the game can be described as shoddy, beyond expectation, the sheer scale of glitches and bugs make Fallout 76 seem a fairly well-polished game by comparison and this is only emphasised by the number of disconnection errors one can expect to fight with, in one half hour session I was disconnected three times, this is somewhat average.
    The Graphics are reminiscent of the PS2 era and characters frequently stop lip syncing or moving their mouths at all, opting to instead nod their head to the words as if rocking out to a particularly heavy metal song. Dougluge interrupts, errors and missing cutscenes are also a common occurrence.
    In one example an early mission had me fight off a large armada of Borg ships side-by-side with a series character called Nog, as voiced by Aron Eisenberg, my bridge crew and several other NPCs kept referring to him by a different name and it was only later I learned Eisenbergs character was replacing a previous NPC. Nog had been shoe-horned in as a replacement but the NPC dialogue had not been changed to reflect this.
    Such incidents are highly common and many newer players could end up confused as various NPCs refer to events which have not happened, characters that are not there or refer to the player as the wrong species, faction and gender.

    The game does slowly taper up towards endgane, with much of the developers focus primarily in this region, the game comes over as particularly top heavy and requires users to purchase a Tier 6 starship, unavailable through any in-game currency least a player sell on to you, for around $30. Without one a player can expect to fight waves of impossible enemies or be meet with frustration as their ship is constantly one-shot killed in both PvP and PvE events, limiting what end-game content is available to free players and those who choose to pay.
    In stark comparison to early and mid-game, the content available to premium end-game users is rather enjoyable and of considerably higher quality, the PS2 graphics and glitchy cutscenes of the early game give way to a spectacular series of well-detailed maps, photo-realistic characters and well-polished cutscenes, proving that the developer team is well within their capabilities to improve the game as it currently stands.
    However as it stands it is obvious the developer team is only interested in providing end-game content for the few users willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for end-game content and keys to loot boxes.
    If you are looking for an online Star Trek Experience, look elsewhere.
    Outside of the aesthetic of some of the ships, and characters the similarity of the game vs the show ends, with combat thrust upon the character in 99.9% of all situations, the Federation being in a constant state of war with one faction or another and the diplomacy and exploration missions being either unplayable due to game-breaking bugs, or simply removed entirly.    … Expand

    It lags and is very buggy. Sorry, i would love to play this but the technical difficulties make it impossible. Also what is with the PS2 graphics?

    As of 3 Nov 20, the lag makes the game unplayable. It is a good port of a broken game. The PC game has gone through both positive and negative updates. The original design however results in a lackluster experience that does not pull the player into the Star Trek world. The space battles are unrealistic, the ground battles are terrible with the player constantly under attack (flanked)As of 3 Nov 20, the lag makes the game unplayable.     Star Trek fans will be in awe until the tutorial ends. Now with Perfect World Entertainment at the helm, it is pay to win with exorbitant fees for competitive ships.

    There's a lot to like about Star Trek Online, even for players who aren't hardcore Star Trek fans or crazy people like me, but it does ask to be put up with to a certain extent. As for the console versions, it's also not all there yet, almost literally. At the same time, it's hard to name a more overtly generous free-to-play title on the current market, and it's worth a shot, for both Trek devotees and the merely Warp-curious.

    Star Trek Online is a game that casual and dedicated Star Trek fans should check out. While it doesn’t beat out Neverwinter as far as mechanics goes, it allows players to inhabit a fascinating facsimile of the universe, exploring, undertaking complex missions and always boldly going forward (because we can’t find reverse).
