I was very disappointed by this game: I didn't expect GTA levels of detail but at least expected more fun from a gangster based free roaming game....you know, like Saints Row. Despite being called "Definitive Edition" it feels lackluster and even with the DLC episodes cleared, I have a big sense of emptiness inside as if something was missing.

Let's start with the story: the plot is revolved around Wei Shen who's an undercover cop who's a double agent for the triad and has to rise in ranks to take out the big ones...and that's the deal really. You get to do many missions but I honestly can't even remember half of them, because not many were important for the main plot: a lot of fluff missions where nothing happened and all I did was to steal crap for no reason but to get more money.

It doesn't help that the characters are bad too: the game tries to give a sort of conflict within Wei Shen, to choose between triads and cop, but the reality is that it never really shows its full effects: Shen always does his job like normal and whenever he said something, nothing really happened anyway. His attachment for the Triad is the same for the cops: he doesn't care, so why should I? Even when he said his best friend - HIS BEST **** FRIEND - that he will not leave him behind, all he did was...leaving him behind. Just what the ****

And top it all of, even the secondary stuff like dating girls is so underplayed it's amazing: all they serve is to allow you to check extra on the map and that's it. You cannot date them a second time.

Okay, nevermind the story: this game is all about fun, so is the game fun? Honestly no, I was really bored after doing the tenth same mission about fighting enemies and chasing thugs. Most of the missions are quite literally the same deal, whether cop or not, and even in the DLC, they didn't really try harder. More to that later.

What saddens me is that the game is big, there are MANY activities to do, from cop jobs to racing, and It never EVER changed: it was the same thing all over with almost no difference it was mind-numbing. It doesn't help that the fight is also repetitive: just press one button and do a basic combo to kill most enemies while triangle is countering. it's easy at least and you can do environmental kills, but that's it. Also, gunplay is soooooo bad and underwhelming - and so easy to do: just vault over a cover and kill enemies: infinite slow mo!

And to top all of this, the DLC missions are even more underwhelming! I liked the nightmare on north point the most but because at least they gave us new enemies and I liked the new face meter which allowed some neat animations. But once again it's all the same thing: kill enemies to death.

The second DLC is even worse because it felt more like an additional case for the main game...but the main game case is actually better! Just...just disappointing, that's all I can say.

So I said how the game is boring but hey, it's still a big game right? It can't be so bad...except that I finished the main game in about 20 hours and about 2 hours for each DLC to complete...no I didn't rush, in fact I took my time and only had to resort to maps online because I couldn't find some places on my own, but in less than 30 hours the game was over for me (I platinum it in 29 hours, it's that short).

It's a real shame, it's all I can say: I wish the game to be bigger, to expand more, but I feel that it was rushed because everything is barebone developed: characters come and go and the story has only a few points that make any sense, while the rest is fluff. Add an underwhelming world with boring missions - and I didn't mention the many bugs I had, but no crashes at least - you get a game that is just "okay". It's neither good or bad, but not even mediocre or above average: this game is okay.

Do I recommend it? On discount, yes, without a discount...get Saints Row instead.
At least It didn't bore me!

The game has not the best of scenarios, full of clichés and well predictable plot twists, the characters are not the most charismatic, but the story develops in a clear and objective way, making it even catchy at some times

With a city not as big, but as alive as in GTA (it is impossible not to compare), the game rarely leaves you with nothing to do, even when you are not following the main history. there are races, missions to clear a specific area of criminal activity, working as police or even just collect hidden boxes or find specific spots to improve your character.

The gameplay can seem a bit confusing at first, especially while driving, but that's all about adaptation and after some time the game starts to flow and drive passes from complicated task to the most fun part of the game.

Fights are mostly without guns, and actually unarmed fighting is much more fun. Trough the game you learn more new interesting moves, but when with guns, this is another negative point of the game. The controls do not always respect, sometimes you shoot and shoot just does not come out, and the aim is a bit confusing. But this does not hinder the experience with the game.

In conclusion, Sleeping Dogs is a pleasant surprise in ps4, the extra content make the game even more complete, and guaranteed many hours of fun.

Very good game, the dlc were fun and so was the mission , I know that it doesn’t need to be remastered but playing it again on PS4 is quite enjoyable for example good fight sequence , awesome gun play , good story, the world is well crafted my only problem was the some of the repetitive side missions. Also wei is a very likeable character and there is a lot of Easter eggs around the world.

I love the story, a dark and brutal foray into the untraveled in video games East. The Hong Kong underworld complete with sex trafficking, drugs, triads and corruption is fantastic. The combat is awesome and is a more complex version than what the recent Arkham games offer complete with upgrades. It takes a while to get to grips with controlling vehicles, once you do however it has a more "Action Movie" feel to it than other games of this genre. Over all the game itself is terrific, I'd give it a 9/10

This is where it lets itself down, yes it has all the DLC and such but as far as a visual and audio overhaul its barely had one. All they have really done is made everything shiny and glisten. The neon has a bit more image flare and its a bit more higher resolution but that's about it. When it rains it looks really good but my major gripe is how empty Hong Kong is. Aesthetically the game is abandoned and sparsely populated, the city simply isn't alive enough. The pedestrians have about 7>10 possibilities of things they can say and there aren't enough of them. Sometimes there are literally zero vehicles on the road. To me this is not a next-gen overhaul. It is more fitting of a past gen GOTY re-release.

Summarizing, Sleeping Dogs is a fantastic action game and it is very underappreciated. However as far as remasters and definitive editions go this is a flop. Taking into consideration a certain other open world crime game which was remastered into practically a brand new game *cough, cough* GTAV *cough* the remastering of Sleeping Dogs is pretty sub-par.

The story is well-constructed, and despite being short and sometimes too simple, it is enjoyable. Main protagonist Wei Shen's situation is delicate and throughout the story we understand why. Things that were less fun to me were the side quests and more generally most of the secondary content.

Gameplay-wise, the main strength of the game is the combat system. It may not be as developed as a Batman Arkham game, but it's nevertheless really good for such a GTA-like type of game. Wei Shen is a master of martial arts and the game demonstrates that perfectly through that fighting system. The handling of cars is not the best I've seen in an open-world despite being good enough to enjoy driving in the game. The size of the map is obviously not as big as today's open-worlds standards, but it's good enough to support what the game has to offer.

I'm very happy this game exists and I'm sad to see that the studio closed because I would really love to see Sleeping Dogs 2 coming! Give this game a try, it's low priced enough nowadays to make it worth it.

—Interesting premise and setting. It's very rare to see games made about Hong Kong and the triads, I feel the overall concept and premise was extremely interesting and compelling. The first few opening hours and missions are also very fun and immersive as you try to work your way up the ladder and gather more information.

—Great overall gameplay. It easily competes or even beats other series like Saints Row and GTA in the gameplay alone. From the aforementioned hand to hand combat to the chase sequences to the smaller activities and missions littered around the world. There is a wealth of side-activities and collectibles here, will easily lend you a good 6-8 hours on them alone.

    Cons:
—Combat gets extremely repetitive after a while. There are really no new moves that you can learn later on in the game, you can just upgrade your current moves to do more damage. The striking just revolves around single button presses. By about 2/3rds into the game, You're gonna be actively trying to avoid hand-to-hand fights because of how repetitive it is.

—The game is just too easy. You can single-handedly annihilate 15-20 people all by yourself, at least in hand to hand combat.

—The storytelling and pacing drop completely about halfway through the game. Wei Shen is an interesting character but all his internal conflicts and dilemmas literally lead nowhere and the actual storytelling just turns bad. Missions get extremely repetitive and even mindless after a while.

—The world is just shallow. This is the biggest problem with the game. There is a wealth of side-activities to do but it just lacks depth. There are no alternate martial arts you can learn or anything. You can't even buy **** guns in the game. Everything gets extremely stale after you've done your first 4-5 missions of each type. Racing also just devolves into a guessing game as all your opponents have inhuman turning speed with 0 weight to their cars, easily speeding past you if you bump into a tiny pebble on the side of the road which brings you to a screeching halt.

Everything just feels cheap and average. Even with extremely interesting missions where you're supposed to sneak into a hospital or crime scene under cover and collect info, It just feels half-assed and cheap. The RPG elements in this game are just not up to par.

In conclusion, If you're a die-hard martial artist or kung-fu flick addict like me then buy the game on a discount. The DLC missions offer a lot of great and interesting sequences with more elaborate stories and details but outside of that, everything is just slightly above average.

But does that equal a better game and something fans of the series should purchase? No but there are a few caveats to mention.
Sleeping Dogs was one of the best games of 2012 and one of the best non-GTA sandbox games ever to have been made with its great story, wonderful acting by a ton of celebrities, and a focus on melee combat never before seen in a sandbox game. But the game was released in 2012 and is now over 2 years old, an eternity in the gaming world. The remastered version does little beyond touching up the graphics (just barely....) and adding all the DLC into the mix on one disc. It's a decent package but leaves alot to be desired.
First of all, the graphical upgrade is beyond minimal. While the character models for the main Cantonese people are good, anyone of another race look beyond awful. The world doesn't look great and you can tell there was very little done beyond the main character models, but even those don't look that good. For a remastered version and a game on the PS4, this game look terrible. Other remastered games for these new next gen consoles have been pretty to look at, while this game does not. It's pretty sad honestly.
But this is a great game from the last generation and you're doing yourself an injustice by not playing it. Everything about the game is fun and is about as original as a sandbox game can really get honestly. There are some minor gripes that remain from the original game but they are minor compared to the whole game. I have always loved this game but I cannot justify paying 60 dollars for this game when it's about as bare bones as you can get for a remastered game. If this game was around 40 dollars, it would be highly recommended from me. But considering you can get this game for less than 20 dollars on last gen systems if you look hard enough, I cannot recommend this game as it currently stands. That doesn't mean it's a bad game but that there are easier ways to go about getting it.

It very easy to learn very button mashing. Much like (Arkham batman games, Madmax, and Shadow of Mordor) but very very bad. What makes it bad is the timing of the prompts and aiming. It is also very boring combat. Driving sucks compared to Watch Dogs & GTA (granted Watch Dogs in considered next gen). This is an "open world" game a VERY dead boring, skeleton of an open world. This game just doesn't hold up well at all. Why did they make a "Definitive Edition" of this game in the first place? Nothing really looks all that better. Yes you get the "DLC" with it but IF you must really have to play this game Please don't pay more then $20 for this. Expand

This game is just riddled with bugs and **** and it crashes completely at least once a session. The most infuriating bugs are the disappearing objects, which either cause you to fail a mission (guy you're tailing just disappears), or causes you to lose exp (sudden vehicles out of thin air).

Second thing is the melee fighting mechanics, which are the whole core of the game as the weapons

Second thing is the melee fighting mechanics, which are the whole core of the game as the weapons are truly scarce. The only real strategy that works in a fight is to (a) grap smaller opponents, beat them up, run away, (b) kick bigger opponents once, run away, (c) wait for the guy with a knife to strike, counter and hope none of the others are too close, run away. I think the countering system is essentially broken, where even if your reaction time is on spot, the character just does nothing to avoid damage. Best just to run in circles and grab, grab, grab.

Driving is frustrating as hell, and it's almost impossible to get full points on cop missions due to this. Also, the ramming? Why do something this cartoonish in an otherwise "realistic" game.... Just ridiculous.

I give props to this game for the story though, and the dossiers on the main characters are actually well written and entertaining.

If you have played Sleeping Dogs before, there’s no point in picking up the Definitive Edition. But if you’ve missed the original game, you’re gonna have a lot of fun in Hong Kong. [01/2015, p.71]

Whether you've played it before or not, the value for money makes this an impressive package. [Christmas 2014, p.76]

While overshadowed by Grand Theft Auto V, Sleeping Dogs is still a well written and executed action game. The combat mechanics are nothing short of superb. [Dec 2014]
