For me, this is probably the best of the reboot in the series although I cannot help but feel I am playing a version of uncharted. In its own right its a good game there is no doubt but it doesn't have the complete Tomb Raider feel for me as an original 1996 fan. The action outweighs the puzzles, not once was there a time where trying to figure a puzzle proved tricky, and when Lara ends up once again battling a military helicopter fitted with sub machine guns with waves of enemies pouring in gunning them down I just felt like I was playing a diluted version of the uncharted series. I am not sure why the puzzles and intricacies of working a tomb out are second par when you consider we live in a world where people are locked onto mobile phones with puzzle apps as a primary focus. I hope they one day reboot the original, from memory there was only one other human in most of the original game, a guy called 'Pierre' who was always one step ahead and the enemies were wildlife not military grade Navy Seal teams. Lastly the setting as graphically nice as it was, it was all the same location - not scouting the world for some secret treasure which did become repetitive. Expand

I just would like to say that the developers did a great job with this game. Before this game i played Rise of the Tomb Raider and this game was much better than that one. Before this game i played Rise of the Tomb Raider and this game was much better than that one. You really have to pay attention to the story and the characters as i would find myself lost in the story because it mainly revolves around solving riddles and those riddles deal with a part of history i am not familiar with. There were times where i would ask myself why am i doing this and the only answer i had at that time was i am trying to save the world. Here are my likes and dislikes about the game.

    Likes:
-A much better stealth approach than Rise of the Tomb Raider
-Liked the fact that the game took place in a jungle and not in snow. For some reason i wasn't a big fan of snow in the previous game.
-Amazing views and architectures. Tremendous credit to the developers on this one.
-The puzzles are frustrating, but they are so much more unique than the previous game.
-Jonah looked way better than the previous game.
-interacting with another culture is pretty cool
-The story is good as any game or movie to me that deals with the apocalypse is satisfying to watch or play.
-The skill tree has a better layout
-Love how they included the crazy arrow that makes enemies go insane.

    Dislikes:
-Due to me not having the required language skill or required gear to raid tombs or decipher murals i had to come back to them which was really annoying because yes there is fast travel, but even then to me it was not worth coming back unless i felt like it as you still had to trek through the jungle and find it again.
-Stringing enemies up into trees didn't look that great when executed. Just looked very odd. Maybe it was a glitch or something.
-Towards the end pf completing a challenge tomb it doesn't feel as satisfying as the previous game as all you do is pull down the mechanism and the challenge is completed. Whereas the other game you would open the mechanism and light would spew out and felt more satisfying.

To me there is a lot to love about this game and not sure why the user score is a 7.4. This game is so much better than the previous one. I hope they come out with another Tomb Raider game as the series has been addicting. Maybe the next game takes place in Egypt as that would be awesome.

Ho aspettato questo capito con grande entusiasmo peccato che lo abbia trovato di una noia assoluta e per nulla coinvolgente, tra l'altro anche molto corto. Non è lontanamente paragonabile ai due capitoli precedenti. Grandissima delusione.

The jungle dynamic is amazing, giving a photographic scenario for the player to enjoy, not to mention that the diving has improved a lot! The ending chapter of this game is the best of the franchise, with a epic scenes and amazing moments. I’d say that this is a great game, with great moments, a few epic moments, and finally great tombs. The studio could have spent a few more months to improve the gameplay, and I really missed the innovation step in this game, as the gameplay was more or less the same. With astonishing new games such as HZD, GOW, I hope Tomb Raider comes back in PS5 with a lot of innovation! Final Score 8.5/10. Expand

I enjoyed the game so much, I ended with a 95% completion with the overworld map. The production quality was top notch and the game was so intense and engaging. The gameplay and controls were pretty much perfect too and became second nature. There were a very small amount of really annoying parts but they were few and far between the overall game. I'd recommend this game for exploration and puzzle solving lovers. The combat was also very minimal and the stealth takedowns were very fun and satisfying. Из-за такого подхода свежая кровь, которая только пришла осваивать забугорные красоты этой вселенной, может смело сказать олдам: "Любишь OLD-SCHOOL? Геронтофил"! As mentioned before Lara has no shadows in her face! The surroundings are okay but not breathtaking as other games which came out that year. Gameplay wise I have a few problems as well. Why does this game have to stream content? It happened already two times before another part of the story, that it had to stream the content, which meant at least 10 sec of freeze frame! I cannot recall anything like this in the prequels. It is still fun to play, but I expected a higher standard (at least as high as the last game or on the same standard as other competitors...). As a die hard tomb raider fan I really wanted to love this game. I found the world to be beautiful, the initial exploration alone with Lara to be enjoyable and refreshing. The beginning of the game is very dramatic and exciting when Lara takes the dagger, though it felt a bit rushed and left me with questions and wanting more context and back up story. My enthusiasm for the game started to diminish around the halfway point and just decline all the way to the end until I just wanted the game to be over already. So much towards the end was very boring, and the story was not that interesting. It felt kind of like wild goose chase at times and sloppy. The villages were boring and they reused the same character models for most of the villagers. The side quests in the villages were excruciatingly tiresome. It was definitely dark, Laras mood was dark, parts of the game were like a horror nightmare which imo was too much. I miss playing as Lara who is confident and fun. I miss being alone with Lara and vast places to explore where there’s not so many people and not so much talking. If you talk to a villager in this game it can feel like they go on for 5 excruciating minutes.... not interested! Theres nothing really to explore here either. Even on the highest difficulty its not hard to see where to go and almost impossible to get lost or wonder where to go. I only got stuck on one puzzle, and remember only one other puzzle being pretty amazing, most of them were too easy, didn’t even have to really think about what to do most of the time. I miss having to really use my noggin to figure out where to go and what to do with Lara! One really nice part was playing with young Lara, its really the only part of the game where you see a different side of Lara before the end of the game. It is my hope that coming out of this adventure Lara becomes the old Lara we all remember and love. If theres any redemption out of this dark painful story hopefully there will be a new series for Lara that will do the Tomb Raider franchise justice. Out of the 3 games in the reboot this one is definitely the weakest, and though I see what they were aiming for in growing Lara through a difficult time it was not very enjoyable to play as this tormented confused and struggling Lara. In this game Lara is a cold hearted killing machine, and at times feels more like a villain than a hero. After playing and enjoying the first 2 games of the franchise very much I was super excited for the 3rd game. Overall dissapointed. Expand

It's true that there is significantly less combat in this one and in the first two hours, what combat there is, felt clunky and unsatisfying. But stick with it - the game slowly becomes the most immersive, beautiful, interesting Tomb Raider yet. Stunning, vast worlds and intriguing exploration - and all skillfully executed.

The tombs are plentiful and have a satisfying degree of difficulty that can be tailored to your taste by selecting the level of hints from none to maximum. There are additional skills and maneuvers that are really fun and the combat eventually becomes engaging and challenging.

Yes this is an evolution not a revolution but the familiar feels great and the graphics are so much better than the first two, that the world completely sucks you in. I grew to prefer the balance in this one of more exploration and tombs than combat .

If you're looking for a first person shooter - look elsewhere. If you're looking for one of the best immersive adventure games available on PS4 look no further. Do not miss this one if you are a Tomb Raider fan.

On Ps4 it behaves really well, never had a problem or a bug, very stable frame rate, breathtaking views and spectacular animations.
    Sound:
amazing soundtrack and general sound perfectly performed.

I love this game. Shadow of the Tomb Raider have everything what fan of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider series as me want to - beautiful graphic and story, tombs are absolutely amazing and game play and combat system is great too. New underwater explorations is great and the water looks so real and nice etc... there are a lot of thing what i love in this game. One of my best games.

This is definitely the best TR title in the gameplay department, Lara's moveset and animations all flow perfectly. Ledges and secrets can be pointed out to you or you can raise the difficulty however you like so that you don't get handed everything easily, nice touch.

    Ending statement:
One of the best in the series and it's an absolute gem to play, if you are a TR fan or an Uncharted fan, it's a must play!

Wonky mechanics, outdated character graphics, weird facial animations, bland level design, cliché story and villain, uninspiring puzzles, unsatisfying combat.. all make for quite a boring game indeed. And that's after downloading an 11GB patch. If you were hoping for something even remotely close to the quality of the 2013 installment, let alone an Uncharted game, you will be sorely disappointed.

Mediocre. As much as I liked the secret tombs scavenging and the intro of the game in general, the plot proved to be weak, alot of clunky aniamtions, ugly npc with even worse facial animations not to mention a terribly cliche final battle. Next time give script writing to someone else.

If the plot of stopping an apocalypse sounds familiar… don’t worry. .this isn’t the end of things sounding familiar..
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is probably one of the most generic and unoriginal aaa games ive played all year…
There is just no soul here…
The game is beautiful, the mechanics are great…
tons of stleath options.. you have your bow and arrow, you have guns that go in and out as this 14 hour story plays out, theres an xp system and skills… there are tombs which are easily the coolest and best part of the game
But the rest of the game is just so uninspired and boring…
The scenery never really changes.. its jungle, caves, and under water sections.. which of course, youre in south america .. but nothing is done to make any of the sections feel different… nothing sticks out or is memorable, aside from again the tombs… theyre great…
But Shadow of the Tomb Raider just makes the mistake of trying to be what it used to be instead of evolve and create something new….
This feels more like assassins creed and uncharted thrown into a pot, melted, and poured into an action adventure mold…
A linear feeling third person assassins creed walking simulator almost…
just climbing through these boring platforming sections over and over, just to hop in some water and do it all over again for 14 hours that just feels like it goes on forever in scenery that never changes…
Shadow of the tomb raider just tries so hard to be a past version of itself because it thinks that that’s what fans want.. tombs. Puzzles, constant platforming… when just 5 years ago this series was rebooted and that reboot brought tomb raider to near masterpiece level.. it felt real and gritty.. I felt anxiety when I would have to climb, lara felt vulnerable and scared… she felt real…
In shadow of the tomb raider she feels like an emotionaless mass murderer… just killing everyone in here way not because she has to like I felt in the reboot, but because this is a video game and theyre in the way…
I feel like shadow and rise of the tomb raider just threw away the magic they created in the reboot.. they cept the semi open world fast traveling, the hunting animals for crafting and upgrades.. but they threw away the emotion..
Shadow of the tomb raider is a beautiful well polished games, the tombs are amazing, the little towns feel well populated and alive…
But theres no heart here.. no soul…
I only felt anything at the end during a touching moment that had nothing to do with this games main story…
but I didn’t feel for lara, any of her friends or any of this games main characters.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is simply forgettable.
I give Shadow of the Tomb Raider

This game, quite honestly, just looked like a reskin of Rise of the Tomb Raider, doing more of the same from the last installment. Also, on side quests, Lara looks quite inanimate in the dialogues. But, there are definitely positives. The puzzles are once again stimulating and the third person combat is fairly fluid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When Tomb Raider got rebooted in 2013 I was looking forward to seeing how it would turn out. And thankfully in the end it turned out to be a great game and the same can be said of it’s sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider. And with Shadow in the Tomb Raider it marks the end of Lara Croft Origin Trilogy. I thought story wise the first game was a great introduction to what type of character we were going to get this time around. Rise of the Tomb Raider continued to tell her origin story, only this time adding the organization Trinity who were responsible for the death of her father. And now with Shadow of the Tomb Raider this is where we were able to find out more about why Trinity killed her father and we see Lara transform into the Tomb Raider many fans know and love.

I was excited about playing this game because I was looking forward to seeing what Lara Croft would do next but, the thing with this game is my level of excitement going into this game was not as high when comparing to when the game was rebooted and when Rise of the Tomb Raider came out. After playing this game I was left satisfied with the gameplay but, felt that story wise they could have handled a lot of the events that occur in this game better. The story of this game is Lara is on a mission to stop Trinity from acquiring a dagger that can cause the apocalypse if anyone were to get it. So in order for Trinity to not acquire the dagger Lara get the dagger and because of her action she causes the apocalypse. And now the only way she can stop the world from ending is to go to South America and find the legendary city of Paititi and find the box that can stop the apocalypse.

The direction of Lara’s character early on in the game I wasn’t a fan of because she came across as an unlikeable character. And I know that the point of that is so supporting characters like Jonah can call her out and she grows as a character as you play the game. Unfortunately the way that it was handle just didn’t sit well with me and it took a long time for me to like Lara as a character again. And as for the villain of the game this is another problem I have with the story because the main villain really could have benefited from being apart of the previous game so we can learn more about the character and somewhat sympathy with the villian. I only say that because the game was intending to do this as the story progressed and in the end it was underwhelming.

As for the gameplay it's the same as the other games with some added element like how stealth is handled in the game. There are some areas where you can hide on walls and use as camouflage. That is made most evident seeing how you can use the mud on the ground and have Lara cover herself in it and like that see can use a lot of the environment to her advantage. These segments are fun and satisfying especially when you can successfully take out an area without being seen.

One thing I really loved from Tomb Raider 2013 were the tombs you can explore because they provided puzzles and you can net yourself some rewards. Now this game does have tombs but, my issue with how they were handled this time is that most of the tombs I found I couldn’t do because I needed a specific weapon or attachment in order to enter the tomb. And for the most part I couldn’t do a lot of tombs because of that and it almost seems like tombs were meant as post game content. While in the end I enjoyed the experience after I beat the game I didn’t want to continue playing. For me when the credits rolled I didn’t have any interest in completing the tombs because I was done there was no reward worth it for me because I beat the final area and there was no point to complete tombs at that point. Luckily there is a new game plus feature so maybe this is the best way to tackle tombs as you play.

In the end Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a really good game and I would recommend this game to anyone who have enjoyed the rebooted series. The game looks great and the music was also really good which added to a lot of the moments that did stand out in the game. Especially the scenes where you see the badass Lara Croft we know and love. This is my least favorite out of the three but, it was still a journey I was glad to see in the end and I am excited to see what is next for Lara Croft.

The game trows away any shred of realism out the window literally with the introduction. It is a very promising title that feels ultimately shallow and empty. Beautiful execution of course with a slight lack of variety at some point.

And the combat mechanics are painfully terrible. Every single time it was a pain in the ass to fight. The danger from combat came from the controls rather than the magnetically attracted opponents. Once they see you, they are very tricky to let go. At the beginning of the game you get a automatic rifle combined with the bow you don't need any upgrades to progress. You do the rest of the game just for the achievements and not much more of a reason.

Decently fun game but it won't glue you to the monitor from start to end. NOTE: I finished the main story on normal difficulty with a 100% which wasn't that hard to achieve. There weren't that many collectibles.

Another big issue is that this game plays too much like the last two, because it's the Crystal Dynamics way. The formula seems be, reboot Tomb Raider, use as many elements from that new reboot in the next game as is possible, repeat until people stop buying the game as the expected rate, and reboot it again, then repeat the whole process over. Lara deserves better, people like myself who have been fans of Tomb Raider for the last 22 years deserve better, and Crystal Dynamics isn't interested in giving us that.

Finally, the game's story is boring, the acting is stiff, the characters are boring, uninteresting, and pretty much the same as they've always been, and it's hard to sit through. I ended up watching most of the game get played because it bothered me so much. Also, the puzzles are the worst in the series as well. This game simply put, is just bad, but mostly, it's disappointing.

I have played the original tomb raider games as a teenager, and enjoyed the first 2 origin games by square-enix (the first being the best)

Play shadow of the tomb raider with hard exploration difficulty and you will have a genuinely satisfying tomb raiding experience, wherein in this final instalment tombs and crypts appear for a change well concealed and isolated from the rest of the map - sometimes also guarded by enemies. On hard exploration setting any clues and obvious white trail marks are switched off, meaning you will have to genuinely explore your surroundings in order to progress.

The puzzles are also satisfying - they will take you by and large a few minutes to work out - not as obvious and patronisingly simple as say "uncharted" game puzzles. On hard puzzle difficulty verbal hints will not be given at all, adding a challenge on first playthrough.

Combat is a bit annoying as enemies will spot you easily and have very good aim - to counter this set the combat difficulty to easy if you get frustrated. The other downside to combat is that due to the newly introduced stealth mechanic the game unfortunately forces you to play in this style, not really allowing you to go about a combat section in your own preferred way.

I agree with some commentators on the lacklustre story presentation - for example indigenous, non-contacted people speaking perfect english + merchants in their village selling modern weapons (makes no sense whatsoever...)

Despite its shortcomings in some areas this is still a great game... not perfect, but very good.

The third instalment in the Tomb Raider reboot has arrived, and although not quite the apocalypse depicted in the game – it is the weakest of this new triad.

Lara’s final ‘coming of age’ chapter takes the player to Peru, a locale some players may recall being her first outing back in the original Tomb Raider. There are no pieces of the Scion to find this time though, but an artefact connected to an imminent apocalypse of Lara’s own doing. The game attempts to be profound in this way; it asks of us: “What is the human cost of all these tombs you’re raiding? An excellent question, and one you can seemingly ponder while recklessly raiding more tombs. This nonsensical approach to the story and its themes is replicated in many of Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s plot points, to the extent that it gets noticeable for someone even vaguely following the story. It can be frustrating.

For all that, the story does have a fantastic setting. The Peruvian Jungle teems with life and the first few hours exploring it is a joy. There are intermittent settlements as well, and one of these is perhaps the single most beautiful setting in any Tomb Raider to date, the city of Paititi. These settlements add a new element to the games, which is the RPG style side-quests that you can undertake by interacting with the residents. Sadly, these are usually dull affairs that fail to utilise the lore and to set to its real potential. It also seems like the developers wanted to reduce the number of human enemies this time around, and there are far less shooting, maiming and general carnage to be done on this outing.

The best adventures await you in the tombs, and the game does shine in this respect. The new challenge tombs are creative, challenging and have enough variety to stay interesting. Playing the game on the harder difficulties, as I was, the clues were not available, and a few tombs took me back to the old Tomb Raiding days of being ‘stuck.’ I never knew how much I missed it. On familiarity, Shadow brings back the skill trees, the campfires and the weapon upgrades. Nothing about it has changed enough to warrant mention, except for the fact that this third instalment has lost a lot of its ‘survivor,’ feel. You will never really feel in any danger in this game. Supplies are so abundant as to make it feel redundant as a feature. This feeling is made more apparent by the caches and treasure troves that usually reward you with yet more supplies you are not using.

Completionists among you will be busy. There are ridiculous amounts of collectables and documents that delve into the lore of both the Maya and the Inca. Some of the artefacts are genuinely interesting, and avid readers may be able to reconcile themselves with the developers by filling some of the story’s vagueness with the descriptions therein (though I was not). The trophies are a mixed bunch that encourage you to play the full game for your platinum but are not overly burdensome.

Overall, I do recommend this game. It is an underwhelming end, but to a journey that I enjoyed and felt compelled to finish. If you have played the other two, this is a must.

To start off, let me say I quite liked the previous two entries to the series. Unfortunately this third entry seems to have lost a lot of it's polish. Here are a few of the things I'm talking about. If these things frustrate you, then avoid this game:
1 - Too much insta-death. By itself, this isn't necessarily bad. After all, uncharted does this in action sequences as well. The problem here is that you can end up playing the same section dozens of time because the game has buggy controls, or because it doesn't do a good job of showing you where to go.
2 - Which brings me to the bad sign-posting. This game hides the path from you all the time, not just in puzzle sequences. You can spend minutes just trying to figure out where to go, only to see that the next ledge was just camouflaged for no reason.
3 - Voice acting. Lara is extremely monotone. To be fair, this was never strong in the series, but it gets really annoying since she'll talk every time you use survival instincts.
4 - Bad camera/controls. The camera will often rotate around to prevent you from actually looking at where you are supposed to move to next. Also, about 20% of the time the controls crap out so you can't use your climbing gear.
5 - Boring side quests - fetching, fetching, and more fetching.
6 - Broken combat. Even with aim sensitivity set to the maximum, your reticle moves slower than most enemies, making it just a game of luck that you were pointing the right way when attacked, because you'll never be able to adjust in time.
    7 - Boring story.

This game is so flawed that it really isn't worth the money. I wish I could get my money back. Spend your money on a better game instead.

And with that I want to give my take on the game.

Generally I think it is a good game. I enjoyed playing it. I feel there are certain aspects that can be improved. I would recommend the game but I also have suggestions on approaching the game.

I don’t have any problems with the storyline. It’s not cluttered, not confusing and not too lengthy. It was well thought out. I did not have to play the first two games to figure out what is going on. Generally satisfying storyline with good buildup, good flow and good ending.

The characters complement the storyline. Lara is not straight up full of conviction. She doubts herself and is somewhat conflicted. Those traits do make her more relatable and endearing. We also see multi-dimension in the antagonist Dominguez. He has Paititi’s interest at heart, just his methods are too extreme. It was saddening when Unuratu died. It was particularly heartbreaking when Jonah was supposedly killed.

The character animation is top notch. Lara is beautiful. Jonah wouldn’t be as lovable if he doesn’t look the way he does. Characters aside, the environments depicted are also breathtaking. From the lush jungles to the lively towns and cities to the dark and appropriately claustrophobic caves and tombs, everything was meticulously detailed. I love it.

Exploration in the game is really fun. Lara has the skill set befitting of a tomb raider. What spoils the fun is how inconsistent the game behaves when Lara is executing these moves. One moment she can do it. Reload the game, do the exact same thing and this time she falls to her demise. The inconsistencies and luck factor have to be removed. Apart from all that, I think the game excels in allowing me to live out my fantasy of venturing into caves and tombs; something I consider too dangerous to do in real life.

I generally dread combat in the game. In the Deadly Obsession difficulty, the best, if not the only approach towards combat is stealth. Sadly, stealth, like exploration, is inconsistent and therefore unreliable. It is not broken because you can eventually stealth your way to victory. For the number of tries you need to succeed, you could actually be doing the same things. Just the outcomes are different and you would be wondering why. Stealth could be improved to be more robust to improve the overall combat experience. As for the fights that provide no option to go stealth, I would say I am not a big fan of the idea of Rambo Lara singlehandedly going up against military trained Trinity soldiers or even the Yaaxil.

With how dreadful combat is, I do enjoy the missions and tombs where no combat is involved. The challenge tombs are so fun and challenging. The puzzles are very well thought out and executed.

I do not recommend the Deadly Obsession difficulty. What makes the difficulty broken is the fact that the game only saves at base camps. I wasted a lot of time getting to the hard parts rather than dealing with the hard parts. Using time wastage to achieve a certain level of difficult is a terrible idea. I don’t understand how game developers can confuse challenging with time consuming.

That’s my review. Let me know what you think. I welcome different perspectives.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a action filled game that was trhilling at times. The storyline is maybe the worst of the trilogy and could have been improved on the characters. The location was beautiful but repepetive at times. Overall I had fun and that is the most important factor into this game.

-Story: the game tries to deliver a epic journey but with no success. Why Trinity is now a paramilitar organization and its head boss a guy who lives in a hidden village pretending to be the god messenger? In RIse of the TR the enemies were heavily armed and hard to kill, now you can take down most enemies with 4-5 bullets, no joke, even the armored ones. These leads to a poor use of the stealth mechanics. Why use stealth if going berserker is more effective? That is a huge problem.
Also Lara is like a superhuman, even if a jaguar **** her back she is like "only a scratch, no real deal".
Also Jonah... An unnecessary character like in RotTR.

-World: beautifull I have to say.

-Combat: the combat in this new trilogy has evolved practically nothing. Same animations, same moves, same weapons, same enemies. In addition on this game there are significally less combat than in the previous two, why?

-Conclusion: a huge dissapointment and a bitter ending to a trilogy than looked promissing.

Wow what a journey! I just finished this on Oct 1 at 100% completion and 95% trophies earned, which took about 30-40 hours with slow-medium gameplay.

As a massive fanboy of Tomb Raider since 1996, this game gets a 10/10 from me. The gamer in me will give it an 8.5/10. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND PLAYING THIS AT HIGH DIFFICULTY THE FIRST TIME, AND EXPLORE EXPLORE EXPLORE!! Pros: 1.

The gamer in me will give it an 8.5/10.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND PLAYING THIS AT HIGH DIFFICULTY THE FIRST TIME, AND EXPLORE EXPLORE EXPLORE!!

    Pros:
    1. Stunning, beautiful graphics with excellent cutscenes.
    2. Fun puzzles to solve in Challenge Tombs.
    3. Immersive exploration, with open hubs instead of open world.
    4. Brilliant level designs. Tombs really feel oppressive and authentic.
    5. Shadow really captures the feel of Mayan/Incan/Aztec art and culture. I've always been enthralled by their history, with my favorite Mayan based movie being Apocalypto.
    6. This time round, the devs toned down on combat and focused more on exploration and puzzles instead which I really feel captured the essence of the original Tomb Raider in the 90s. Those games were hard!!
    7. Climbing and controlling Lara is intuitive. Feels natural and I actually enjoyed traversing/spelunking around the tombs. It doesn't feel as boring or mundane as the climbing in Uncharted for example. You'll really feel like an expert wall climber.
    8. I love the music used especially in the young Lara sequence and the credits.
    9. Story is engaging, especially if you collect all the lore items and read the notes in sequence.
    10. With the end of this trilogy, I cannot wait for the devs to bring Lara out of origins and into a full blown Tomb Raider dual pistol wielding mode. I hope they will hire talent to improve on writing, story flow and pacing to get to the levels of Uncharted/The Last of Us/Hellblade.

    Cons:
    1. They recommend turning on native language for immersion but I feel it's the opposite because Lara will be talking in English while NPCs will be talking in their native languages. I ended up turning it off so everyone's dialogue is in English accept for background conversations.
    2. They still haven't fixed examining objects for hidden clues. I need to turn on controller vibration each time because that's how the game allows you to detect the clues. Finding clues visually is an exercise in frustration.
    3. Background audio sometimes overlaps, cuts off or loops in the most immersion breaking manner.
    4. I cannot stand Jonah in this. STFU already with your, "Are you OK, Lara?". She's the friggin TOMB RAIDER. YES SHE'S OK JONAH. SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE SIGNED UP FOR. GET ON WITH THE PROGRAM. I feel that his character is redundant and useless. And how on earth is he always able to catch up to Lara?? He's no tomb raider obviously, yet somehow is able to find his way to Lara who had to go through climbing hell to get to places. Some writer out there must love his character so much to give him the spotligh in Rise, Shadow and even the comics. I would've preferred if they developed Sam Nishimura as a secondary character. That would've made more sense what with them being best friends in college and surviving a traumatic experience in Yamatai. I still don't know what happened between Lara and Sam. What a wasted narrative opportunity.
    5. Side missions MUST be improved the next time. It's very basic. To be fair, this is not a dedicated RPG like The Witcher/Skyrim/Fallout but if you're gonna include side quests, either go all in or remove them. Shallow fetch quests just spoil the whole experience. The gains in plot points did not justify the blandness of the side missions.
    6. Super long loading times, making fast travel a chore. I guess they'll patch this in the future. I hope.
    7. End of the world/save the world plot is getting stale. I really hope they improve their writing and narrative design for the next one.

In conclusion, despite it's flaws, I absolutely enjoyed Shadow, and I really felt like a Tomb Raider.

Simply put, if you haven't played the first two, there's no reason to play this one. This time, they've chosen to focus on swimming, stealth and realistic villages. All three of these things were present in the last game but I don't think any of them were deserving of expansion.

The swimming mechanics work far better than I feared but the gameplay it provides still isn't very compelling. Every thirty minutes or so, you'll go underwater for a 3-5 minute segment that'll inevitably poop you out in a new area. There might be some deadly fish but it really doesn't change anything. If you die, just try again and you'll probably make it the second time. They don't present much interesting exploration either, as the swimming areas are usually linear or optional ponds with treasure inside. These sections were just brainless to me, nowhere near as interesting as the core platforming mechanics. More importantly, who thought focusing on water levels was a good idea? Who likes water levels? Rise of the Tomb Raider already got just about all the utility you can get out of swimming mechanics in a Tomb Raider, this was a silly thing to focus on.

Next is stealth. This was heavily featured in the game's marketing but it really didn't change the game much to me. The main changes are you can cover yourself in mud like in the movie Predator and you can hide in grassy walls. Much like the focus on swimming, this just doesn't change the overall experience in a meaningful way. There are more sections where you're forced into stealth but this, too, is a negative in my view. I cannot understate how little combat this game has. There are almost no shoot-outs, and almost every enemy encounter can be overcome with stealth. This has a couple unintended consequences. Firstly, people like me that prefer the shooting to the stealth are likely to feel left out in the cold. These games' stealth mechanics are fine but I think the shooting is far more enjoyable, being some of my favorite third-person-shooter mechanics. The bigger problem is that this stealth focus massively undermines the upgrade system. You can upgrade your guns as usual and pick from a wide array of ability upgrades but all this is largely pointless in a game that has almost no combat.

Lastly, is the shift in world design. While the first two Tomb Raiders were focused on making elaborate, vertical, jungle-gyms that were as enjoyable to explore as they were to look at, Shadow of the Tomb Raider takes a more muted approach. Firstly, almost the entire game takes place in a Peruvian jungle. There's lots of jungle, jungle, ruins, and more jungle. The variety on display here pales in comparison to the first two games. Even the game's intro level is just a Mexican jungle instead of a Peruvian jungle. So different... Worse, the game clearly puts a lot of focus into its 3 main village areas, where you can talk with tons of natives, do sidequests, and buy gear. Unfortunately, these areas really drop the ball. All three are incredibly flat, with nothing interesting to climb or explore, offer tedious fetch-quest sidequests, and turn the 100% quest into a grind. I really just didn't care to talk to these NPC's or solve their problems. This was handled far better in Rise and it's undermined by the weak level design. Especially if you're a completionist, you'll come to despise this game's main village, as it contains about 50% of the game's optional content but is the least interesting area to play in the entire series.

So throw all that together. Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn't do much new, and what it does do differently usually undermines some other aspect of the game. With this one, it really felt like they were trying to make the game realistic, more like a full open-world sandbox game, and more like Uncharted, all of which are at odds with what I love about this Tomb Raider series. Again, only play this if you've played the first two and want more. I replayed Rise of the Tomb Raider after completing this one and found that it was, in fact, far more enjoyable even the second time through than Shadow is on the first play. It's still a good game overall but pales in comparison to its predecessors. Also, I'd recommend you avoid the game's side content except the tombs. Getting to 100% really eroded this game in my mind.

Climbing feels as clumsy as it felt back in Tomb Raider Legends, Enemy Paths are clearly scripted and the Stealth Mechanics are way too basic. I always felt like there's only one way to get through an area without alerting every enemy on the map and since there's a lot of combat/stealth in the game everything seems to be pretty linear for a semi Open World Game. The Worst part about the Gameplay is probably the Close Combat System, it only requires random Button Mashing instead of quick reflexes and seems to be a bit buggy. I often punched my way through several enemies without even dodging once.

I guess the game has a good amount of content but it just didn't manage to keep me interested long enough to play through the additional tombs and side Missions.

It's a pretty average Game overall but it just reminded me too often that i'd be better off playing Uncharted 4 instead, which is the better game in pretty much every aspect.

Internet research showed that glitch is common. Second, on hardest difficulty combat is not hard. It's same as on easy. Mode is hard only cause it's annoying. You can save only on camp fire and there is parts of game which are really silly!

ETC... You start at campfire, must pass 3 waves of enemies, solve 10 minute puzzle, swim and then after 20 minutes you must dive through lake full of piranhas which attack random. If they kill you you must play everything again and again because there is no save.

The design of the challenge tombs and crypts was simply gorgeous and each one was more difficult and detailed than the last constantly challenging you throughout the game if you choose to explore them, and since they reward the player with gear and skills that help Lara especially in harder difficulties I'd strongly recommend them, hell even if you don't care about the skills and gear the design of each makes it well worth the visit. This game added a new difficulty setting where you could customize how hard you wanted combat, exploration, and the puzzles to be, for example, if you wanted easy combat but difficult puzzles you can adjust accordingly which is an amazing feature for a variety of players. It also has an option to localize language so that everyone speaks in the language you do or they speak in their native tongues which helps make the experience that much more realistic. I personally loved that it wasn't as combat focused as the previous two entries in the reboot trilogy and focused more on the puzzles and exploration making it more like the PS1 originals. The story is not as good as Rise of the Tomb Raider's but it is still very interesting and will have you sticking around to the very end to see where Lara ends up and how it sets the character up to be the titular Tomb Raider from the originals. It is an amazing end to a great trilogy for one of gaming's greatest icons. Expand

This third one is just more of the same but it does not taste as good. Campfires to upgrade, locked content until you have a particular gear and/or weapon, exploration, kills, rinse and repeat. It's not bad, it just feels... less inspired. And I also think this new game does not look as good and polished as the first two... it feels kind of rushed to be honest. Some of Lara's facial expressions are atrocious.

It's a nice game to have some casual, adventure fun for 15/20 hours. And that's it. Kind of a weird end for the trilogy though... thought they would end it with a bang, and I was left with: ok, thanks I guess.

This Lara reboot lacks soul. Look how amazing the Uncharted series is. Those games have jaw dropping moments. This new Tomb Raider series is just about killing, upgrading stuff and finding caves while avoiding some mysterious threat to destroy the world.

This series has had solid games throughout the trilogy with gripping cinematic sequences. Unfortunately I feel like after the first game they haven't quite gotten the same spark that it held.

The gameplay is exactly what you would expect from the new Tomb Raider series. You have a dash of survival with crafting, and a little exploration mixed in. The level up system seemed more useless now then ever before. I never felt like I got a new ability or was stronger in any way. Shadow also threw in a stealth only section that was infuriating, both as a mechanic and logic wise. In the stealth section you are killing guys with guns only using a knife. Not once can you pick up a weapon and shoot back. There isn't any story reason for this it was just to make you be stealthy. The high notes of the game were in the first hour. I was so excited for what was to come playing the beginning. Unfortunately Tomb Raider blows its load and actually doesn't pick up again towards the end.

The story was boring. The villain didn't have a good plan at all, and Lara seemed like she was going to go through a deep character change, but then she was over it fairly quick. The side characters along Lara are so bland they needed to have someone with some charisma in this game to make it a tad more interesting. Lastly the hell with the ending they try and pull the rug over your head and it is so played out you aren't remotely surprised by the outcome.

Overall Shadow of the Tomb Raider has a bland story with decent gameplay. The gameplay does get a bit stale due to the lack of blockbuster set pieces and enemy types. If you are a fan of the series give it a shot just don't buy it new. Wait for a sale on Amazon, or Gamestop it will be worth a BARGAIN BIN price.

yes, this game is beautiful, but I never felt any empathy for characters, they sound and act superficial and artificial. The difficulty is stupidly bad managed on some scenes like the first "arena" with Yaaxil. When on hard mode you have good chances to be taken down within 2 seconds after the begining of the scene...

    pros:

    - I had a bug free game except for the 100% artifact achievement

    - photo mode (could need some improvement but there already is a thread for that)

    - the traversal in every aspect without the white ledges. I looooove it every time Lara's grib fails and I have to press the grab button again.

    - piranhas

    - every puzzle and tomb, especially the eagle trial and path of battle

    - the nahual quest

    - the stealth system

    - the cenotes, the whole yaaxil stuff gave me the creeps (you heard them but never really saw them); especially before we really knew what

    and who they are.

    - The cenotes challenge tomb with the ship

    - San Juan was a lovely hub, wish it would had been bigger.

    - Lara's arms :3

    - Unuratu was very well written, I really felt sad when she died

    - Etzli was gladly not some annoying little brat but I would had prefered a little older boy (16) to take on his mothers heir. How old is he?

    Maybe 13?

    - Villagers voiced their annoyance when Lara ran and shoved them outta the way.

    - Jonah did a good job on keeping Lara on the ground. For exampel when he shouted at her after the tsunami.

    - The story itself was good.

    - Lara's personality was good, like she didn't had time or cared about her injured leg while Jonah worried. The best part was when she had her badass moment at the oil refinery and the "Don't try me" part.
What irked me was that she said sorry to Amaru after stabbing him. Why? He killed her father. She didn't had any connection with him. I would had understand the "sorry" if he had been one of her Professors or an old friend who visited them often when Lara was young. Also that she fell so easily for Rourke's lie about Jonah being dead.

    cons:

    - her stiff necklace (might be minor but it annoyed me)

    - There were no visible marks on Lara's back (in the cutscene) after the Jaguar attack. I mean her back must have deep cuts from those

    claws.
    - way too often in combat my view got blocked by big ass leaves (some games make objects transparent when the camera gets too close) - Invisible walls ok there weren't that many but I wished I could jump on most tents, sheds, block of stones. For example I was deeply annoyed that I couldn't jump and climb on most of the buildings in San Juan village and Kuvaq Yaku. I WOULD LOVE TO CLIMB EVERYTHING - The villagers of Paititi shared how many different faces? Not many because after running around some time I recognized them all over again. Some incest heavy village there. Also the faces of Amarus guards all looked the same you can even recognize that tho they wear helmets or facepaint. A little bit more face diversity wouldn't hurt. - Where's that deadly Jungle? There weren't enough Jaguar encounters. Where are the Anacondas, black caimans, giant centipedes and vipers? I didn't felt threatened by the Jungle at all. - combat: I know they reduced combat but imo it was too much reduction. I wouldn't had mind to encounter 2- 4 human enemies here and there and definitely more animal encounters. The first would have been a good place to use hanging enemies up by tree branches. - no enemies in tombs and cryptas - while the underwater sections where pretty and fun; especially when Piranhas were around it wasn't very challenging because I always had enough air. - I was missing a manual control for the flashlight - traps! I only died by one. They are too easy to see, especially if you walk instead of run. - The boss fight. I miss big epic boss battles where you have to learn their mechanics. Destroy/hit some sore spot, evade attacks, go for a boss hit that shortens the Boss life bar (that we can actually see) than repeat until we get to phase two. some random thoughts and suggestions: - I'd prefer to unlock instead of buying some weapons or weapon upgrades, outfits and other extras like hairstyle (Yes the braid), sunglasses, a hat (like I was really envious about Isabella's hat that would have worked perfectly with the adventurer outfit) and colors to dye some outfit parts. I want to be really rewarded by climbing up or down a hard to find cave or some secret passage. Or the church tower in San Juan. Or some underwater section. As of now Shadow is imo the best in this reboot series. And that's it I enjoyed the game and give it 8 out of 10 points.

I really love the Square Enix Tomb Raider games, but I feel as if Shadow of the Tomb Raider fell short. While I welcome the new character arcs and interactions between Lara, Jonah, and other main characters, I feel as if the game pacing is odd and the amount of content, particularly after Rise of the Tomb Raider, fell short of my expectations. The ending of Lara's origin story seemed anticlimactic. I loved having more tombs to explore and utilizing my gear more, as well as the large, open areas (Kuwak Yaku and Paititi). The setting was great and I loved being able to have characters speak in native languages. However, the number of challenges, side missions, and combat (Why am I spending money and resources on weapons I'll never use!) seem to be lacking. Lara's hints during puzzles on Normal mode were excruciating - (YES LARA, I KNOW YOU NEED TO GET TO MIRROR 3, I'M JUST EXPLORING) but I didn't want to change the difficulty because I want to get all the achievements for the different difficulty. It seems excessive. I also hated the water caverns (so anxiety inducing!) but I know that is a nitpicky thing and I'm not letting that affect my score.

Overall it is a fun action adventure game. I liked it! I enjoyed myself while playing it! But it is not free of criticism and problems.

Very good game - reduced shooting, more stealth, more tombs, stronger story-focus, more quiet and atmospheric moments. Good graphics, only the controls are a little bit clunky. If you like this kind of games it´s easily a 9.0, i give it 10 points because of some haters who give this beautiful game a 0?1 For me personally this is more interesting and compelling than God of War.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Slight spoilers. I'm about half way through the second area (Peruvian Jungle) and I'm bored already. All the 10's and 9's you see are not true! I can't even remember how or why Lara was in Mexico the story is that boring & they try to tell you the plot in one or two sentences that you miss. Lara is a Miss Know it all, she's mean to Jonah, game doesn't even say why Jonah is tagging along in the first place - it's like he's her servant. I loved the other two games but I'm not impressed with this one. Stupid stuff like Lara calling out 'Is someone there?" if she hears a noise inside a dark, scary tomb. Right! We'd all do that, wouldn't we? Figures out the main baddie is the head of Trinity by overhearing one very short conversation between two other baddies and other unrealistic stuff like that. I'm still confused on that whole dagger thing and what it is? Story is very confusing and not explained well at all. Camera is really clunky as well on PS4 - fell numerous times just across a hanging wall because I did not have camera perfectly turned against the wall. The lighting sucks in many places making it hard to see what is around or where you are supposed to go. One section in the beginning almost made me quit the game as the forced button mashing device (QTE) would not work until I turned the game down to Easy! Tried about 20 zillion times before that. So far no interesting places - just a cave and a jungle. Big whoop! Also, when you find any treasure or stuff it's hard to tell what's in it as the icons are very small on screen. I'll keep going but I don't remember being this bored or pissed off by the first two games. Expand

There are a lot of collectibles. You always have a reason to go back to the jungle. This game is going to get you addicted. The two city hubs are also a nice change in gameplay and variety. You can tell that the devs have done a lot of effort in it. There are a lot of details in the world. The tombs are more dangerous and scarier. The story is more dark. Not as dark has I have expected but overall the story gets you hooked. More then in Rise. The visuals are beautiful (Though I think on the Xbox One X it is even better). Tho there are some minor bugs and framerate dips here and there. And also.... where is all the blood when you stealth kill your enemy.
The voice acting of Lara is superb. Love her voice and the different facial animations. The game itself is not very polished. (Lara her bow goes right through her face). The enemy ai at some points is also not very good. And also there are not a lot of predator animals. Survival feeling is low (We are in one of the most dangerous jungles in the world. Where is all the danger?). But that does not stand in the way that this a good crafted game. I am in love with it. Love the whole Maya vibe. Love the setting and the art style.

If you are a fan of it you will love it. If your new to the series then remember that there are no real differences with Rise.

On the other side: story is pretty mediocre and the pacing is really bad. I felt like the narrative just pushed me through the locations sucking out the joy of what tomb raider was about. I recall maybe one memorable moment from the game and the rest was pretty really shallow in comparison to the first game in series - I expected way more from the 3rd instalment, as the engine was already in place.

Why is this getting 10s and 9s? Maybe the fans of the series are not seeing the flaws, or maybe despite the flaws, they find this game that much enjoyable nonetheless. As someone who has completed the first two games, I find this quite disappointing.

I mean, I see what were the developers going for. They put more "tomb raiding" and less shooting. And I don't know why people think this is a good thing. Why not more of both? There's no point of upgrading your weapons, you won't be using most of them. Tomb raiding side quest rewards you with combat moves or crafting materials which you rarely use.

The game mechanics are so similar to the previous games. The only thing new about it is that Lara can camouflage herself by smearing mud all over herself. Don't expect that you'd be doing this quite often, you won't. The encounters with enemies are cut down by 3/4, at least. So, if you're looking for combat as it was advertised, (like a predator) those moments will be brief and you won't miss it.

The animations are the same ones as the previous titles. I had hoped that they change the dodging animation. It's the same one since the first, crawling like an ape. If you're trying to get back to the roots, keep in mind that Lara is acrobatic, not a wild animal!

I'm not finished with the flaws. At some point in the game, you are required to be in a specific outfit to talk to people. And this makes my blood boils. It's so annoying going back and forth to the camp just to change clothes. I hated this mechanic. Who thought this was a good idea? This was the worst thing about this game.

I'm still not finish with the criticism. It's the story. I don't care that the characters are uninteresting. But it's about Lara. The first two game had moments where Lara just snapped, going berserk to seek out vengeance. And after that fallout, she had to deal with that transformation, by going all emotional. This is good and a believable transformation... the first time. There is no reason for this to happen again! She already killed a lot of people in the last two games. When are we going to see Lara Croft The Tomb Raider rather than Lara Croft "becoming" the Tomb raider?

The good thing about this game. I did enjoy the stealth section, despite it being so brief.

The game's visuals and scenery is so beautiful that it blows its predecessors looks away. The game also displays it's cultural appreciation with its Maya influence throughout the game, and plays respect to religion. Difficulty wise, this is one of the harder Tomb Raider games. Enemies are more alert now and stay constantly on their toes, which is why stealth is the biggest part of the game's gameplay. The addition fo rappelling and wall running makes the game more interesting. The tombs and puzzles plays a pivotal part of the game. Some are difficult, yet fun and worth the time. Worst Tomb Raider game I played. Horrible gameplay, the mechanics for stealth and shooting are just unacceptable. Also, I have no idea what happened to Lara Croft personality in this game that I just wanna punch her in the face all the time.
The puzzles are boring, the story feels like a very cheap rip off of Uncharted, which is sad, because Tomb Raider is supposed to be the original

Shadow of the Tomb Raider should leave us wanting more from the rebooted Lara Croft game, but with some clunky controls and a lazy combat system, what saves the game from being below average are beautiful visuals, fantastic puzzles and tomb layouts along with true adventuring. It’s as mixed up of a bag as one can get.
