I think 70 score is completely representative of this game. I would say that Shadow Of The Tomb Raider is the game that you can unobtrusively complete in a couple of evenings, but if you miss it, then you absolutely will not miss anything. Expand

After how much i loved the first two games in this series, I was disappointed by this one. I found it to be, by far, the weakest plot in the series. The graphics are strong, but that's about the only big positive I have for this game. It is the epitome of a forgettable game.

First as comparison, I gave 10/10 to tomb raider 9 (2013), 4/10 to rise of tomb raider because of the numerous bugs.
The graphics of this game is still at the top level. The story is overall good. But, the game design and the battles are too similar to the previous 2 games.

A lot of amazing set pieces there and there is also a great thing. There were even some emotional parts in this game. (example: Lara's POV on her Dad's death). After this experience i'm gonna buy the 2013 game and see how is it. Both ROTTR and SOTTR are a truly great experience. When i'll be replaying Rise of The Tomb Raider i'm gonna play through it in the way i played Shadow. Expand

I’ve played this game a million times before. Can we move on to new experiences please? And there is nothing that takes you out of the game more than having to repeat encounters where you failed to grab a specific ledge or whatever and fell to your death. I tried it out via PlayStation Now but deleted it after the tsunami scene. Did I mention that I’ve played this game before?

This game is pretty immense and arguably underrated, especially when viewed next to the most recent Tomb Raider games. The reason I can understand some of the mixed reception the game had on release is I have played the game to death and can recognise things that a certain player won't get along with in this. Let me explain.

The reason I can understand some of the mixed reception the game had on release is I have played the game to death and can recognise things that a certain player won't get along with in this. Let me explain.

Classic Tomb Raider (1996) was mainly about three things: the puzzles, the exploration and the suspense. The suspense part often came from the few encounters you'd actually get, alongside a sudden surge in music, which was otherwise pretty scarce. I see Shadow as returning more to these values, which is why I loved it so much, as these things were what made the original a classic. Recent entries I also enjoyed have arguably been widely successful because of the action and encounters. In this game the thing that will stand out most will be the Tombs themselves, and puzzles therein. There are encounters, however it doesn't feel like they are frequent. The game's definitely cinematic though, and you do indeed still get some of the rush from the recent games. For instance, there is one area that is flooded early on, and you're negotiating getting through it. Let's just say, it's literally a rush.

So, assuming you enjoy the Tomb aspect of Tomb Raider, this entry has the most of them, and also the best of them in years. The puzzles when taken as a whole (including the excellent x7 DLC quest/ Tombs) are the most inventive, most taxing, and impressive looking, and if this is your bag, you will probably find this the best Tomb Raider in years. If not, you may actually hate this entry, because, without the aid of guides, this game taxes you... you have to pay attention, you have to listen and watch for the clues. This game could frustrate the hell out of you.

The visuals are absolutely fantastic, arguably an improvement on the previous title. The texture detail, even on a base PS4 boggled my mind. This late 2018 game looks consistently good on practically all textures in the game in and out of cut scenes. Something I can not say for a more recent entry like say, Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

This was a platinum trophy pursuit, and I really appreciated everything the game offered. I didn't even mind most of the side quest content because they often involved entering one of the many impressive looking crypts or tombs in the main game. Some side-quests however were very 'fetchy' or 'back and forthy', which is always a chore to have to do in *any* game of this nature.

The negatives in the game for me I will say amount to the controls. At times the control response in platforming seemed inconsistent. That is to say, an action that worked in one area will not have the expected response in another area, or you may have to compensate without the game being explicit about letting on. It's difficult to explain in words, but suffice to say, as a consequence expect to die a lot during the platforming in this. For many this will be extremely irritating as it was even to me at times. This is only made worse in very hard mode (needed for Platinum trophy), as the checkpoint saves are far fewer / if any.

The other area I wasn't that into was the story itself, however within it the acting, drama and voices hit the mark for me, as the visuals (textures and backgrounds) are all on point, even on 7 year old (time of writing) base PS4 hardware.

I definitely recommend the game. I say it is underrated but recognise it won't be for everybody owing to the difficulty spike, some of the control during platforming, and its emphasis in often very taxing, very long but rewarding puzzles

I say imbalanced because I think the in game collectible content, which is admittedly large and encourages exploration, hardly matters when the majority of game is more about exploration and discovery over combat. The combat itself is varied with a mixture of weapons and custom ammunition and is challenging fun when you actually get some. There is nowhere enough combat content to justify the amount of collectibles and skills which in turn left the game feeling imbalanced. A big shout out though to the couple of playable set pieces that occur throughout the game.

The biggest let down however is the story here which is simply boring. Compared to the bases and facilities of Trinity in the last game which made them seem like a genuine threat, here we have none of that and all we get is a primitive South American jungle village with no memorable characters. Billed as the moment when Lara Croft finally becomes the Tomb Raider we know and love, frankly I don't see it happen here. It is so focused on the main storyline that anything personal seems to be lost except for a moment at the end. To be honest I thought the ending of 2013's Tomb Raider did a better job at establishing Lara as the Tomb Raider we know her to be.

The game play is familiar and fun and of course the gorgeous visuals will keep you playing and exploring and collecting all these items. For me however this is a bit of a disappointment and a step down from the outstanding two preceding games.

Gameplay wise I had little complaints. I hate only the upgrade system because I always feel like I choose the wrong things & would rather the game automatically be balaced. My other issue was with some cutscenes. The plot had its moments, but I just didnt care about the bad guy trying to end the world. I think Lara came off as shallow since her best friend Johna did everything to treat her good, yet since he’s not a sweaty chested bodybuilder, he only gets thank yous & goodbyes. We are 3 games in & the guy can’t catch a break. Also, why did TR tease duel pistols in previous games? They never make a comeback. Guess we all got lied to.

So the basic storyline of all TR games is Lara gets into the tomb, destroys it, then slays all the Trinity archeologists (because she should be the only one to get it) and then slays all the indigenous people too. And has zero remorse. And she isn't even sacrificed in the ending to be redeemed (I'm not sure she could be redeemed, but it would make at least some sense to try).

Wow. These game developers are trying to steal Uncharted formula by just copying gameplay elements w/o adding any good writing to the mix. And it sucks so badly.

Crystal Dinamics a tomar viento.

It is let down however by the seemingly same plot line just in a new dress.

Don’t get me wrong I had a blast playing this game, it just felt monotonous at times, when you realise its practically the same action over and over again. The puzzle elements were fine, and added that little bit of head scratching challenge you would expect. The fight scenes, especially the final boss was fun to play. Even stealth was challenging to a point it was fun, and I hate stealth.
Though the game has its ups, it does have its downs. The game plays much like previous instalments, unearth some ancient artefact leading to a wonderful hidden civilisation, while running away from a military organisation hellbent on killing you, all the while Lara keeps saying that everything bad that happens is her fault.

That last bit leads me on to my final point. I get it Lara is an all action fighting machine, I mean she is a Tomb Raider, but by god can she not be so stubborn about everything. Someone dies or is injured, she’s all like I’m sorry this is all my fault. She gets injured, she doesn’t want anyone’s help. Its like she plays the good guy and bad guy at exactly the same time.

The game then is a fun play, although it gets repetitive and the character personality does irritate me from time to time, it’s still a fun game nonetheless. I don’t know if there will be another game, but if there is let’s hope it’s as good this one if not better.

Story is absolutely bland and literally hangs off of Lara’s ability to coincidentally know everything when she needs to. Don’t play. It’s nowhere near worth 70% in the real world Expand

Excellent game, the graphics are incredible, the gameplay also very nice, Lara has a lot of new abilities for stealth kills, lots of weapon and upgrades, the campaign is very long like it´s predecessor if you want at least like 75% completion. If you liked the TR games, you must finish the story of this trilogy, really awesome

Отличная игра, лучшая из трилогии перезапуска, не хуже чем коридорный последний анчартед. Обилие гробница, сложные головоломки на тяжёлом уровне, спасибо большое разработчикам.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, I’m an extremely huge fan of Tomb Raider, I do Lara Croft cosplay and I played every game more than one time, it’s my favourite serie of all time and I’m a fan since I’m 3. But this game really disappointed me, I loved Tomb Raider (2013), because it was a new kind of experience in the Tomb Raider serie, yeah tombs were laking but they were trying to shape Lara, to tell her what she went through to become that bad a** that we know. But I think that message got lost somewhere. Rise was good, but not amazing, I think the story was pretty weak and not memorable. For Shadow, nothing really work in my eyes. First the story is more bad than Rise’s story, second the glitches, third the character development is not there. Yes during the first half of the game they do kind of a good job to develop a bit Lara, but after it stopped. But the thing that made me the most mad is the fact that they used “the defining moment that she becomes the Tomb Raider” because I don’t know if it’s me, but I didn’t see the moment that she becomes the Tomb Raider. I was expecting Lara to become more strong emotionally, but she still cries and blame herself a lot:/, I was just expecting something more similar with the old Lara. Also I tried really hard to play the game more than twice but I couldn’t, I really get bored and it makes me sad because it’s Tomb Raider and it’s the first game in the serie that made me feel that way. I’m honestly scared with the future of the serie, let’s just hope that It’s good:( Expand

Of the 3 reboot games for tomb raider, IMO this one was the worst. For the reboot games I played through the original Tomb Raider 2-3 times, Rise of the Tomb Raider twice, and this one I dont think I will ever come back to. I dont know what they were thinking. There were awesome moments in the game that took me back to the older tomb raider games, but those moments were few and far between. Long gone are the solitary days of the original Lara Croft exploring and tomb raiding all by herself. In this new installment there are so many other people and characters who rather than adding to it take away from the game. This game brought in elements of horror, and its very graphic. Much of the game felt like a horrific nightmare rather than the wonder of exploring and solving puzzles and finding artifacts. Its like they are trying to expose the player to more and more shocking and gruesome material with each tomb raider game. They must think, “Well we had the bodies hanging and wading through blood and bones in the first 2 games, lets have dismembered body parts laying all over and human sacrifice going on all around Lara to make the experience more shocking. And lets use all the blood from all the people getting slaughtered left and right for the puzzles. Cool!” And Lara doesnt seem to care one bit in some of the situations where people are being sacrificed. Lara lets out her anger and hatred, she shows a lot of emotion and becomes extremely violent herself, but she also loses some of her humanity. Lara is in a crisis during this game, doubting, being careless, trying to figure out who she is. My only hope really is that this game is setting us up for the Lara Croft we came to love (in a new series).. the sassy fun, sure of herself character where things weren’t so dark and gloomy. Honestly, This game is dark, overly violent and gloomy and to me for the most part was not fun at all. I just tried to finish to get it over with. Uncharted: The lost legacy feels more like Tomb Raider than this. The main character in the lost legacy feels more like Lara than the Lara Croft of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I recommend playing that instead of this if you a a lover of the original Tomb Raider games. Expand

It's great from a technical standpoint, but it doesn't offer much variety in terms of scenery. There are basically 3 locations: the initial Mexican village, a oil refinery, and a generic "jungle" with some settlements here and there. Combat is fine especially after unlocking some power-ups, but there's quite little of it. The game is filled with climbing sections, but be prepared because your grappling hook will randomly fail you for no apparent reason, and when playing on the hardest difficulty, that will mean having to replay long stretches with unskippable cutscenes over and over because the damn thing just won't hook to some place it's supposed to.

Also, gravity is basically non existing in this game. Lara jumps so high and so long that after a while it stops being funny and it starts being stupid. She will jump from hanging to a ceiling to another, and gravity will just stop gravitying because she just won't fall down. Except when you're throwing that damn grappling hook, because then she WILL.

The story is pretty mediocre, but I wasn't too bothered by that. Most side characters are rather lame, but I did appreciate how Jonah was given a bigger role than in Rise. Lara's voice acting is great, even if some of the lines feel cheesy.

Although beautiful, all games seems to much set in a fantasy fictitious world. In Uncharted to compare with, you know what part of the world you are trekking trough, In Tomb Raider you are not. I think this is a thing with Japanese produced game, especially like Square who is a pioneer in making fantasy worlds. They have a hard time creating something authentic on that real level.
2: The game plays too nice to you. Its rolling out the red carpet for you and off you go. The game pretty much TELLS you constantly where to go, what to do, and what to press. Just dont bother playing this game on easy, because it is. Crank that difficulty up from the start
3: In terms of content, new features and other stuff, it has little. It borrows so much from the previous two games that it is scary. This game is falling hard into the Ubisoft/ Assassins Creed franchise where things are much of the same, just different packaged together.
The Instincts feature should have been removed. I think i pressed L3 about fifty thousand times while playing this trough. You get that dependent on it that you feel like cheating each time you press that L3. It totally breaks fluidity of the game and you get too addictive to use it..
4: Like the locations. The story also feels distant. And is not really that interesting. Come on, you enter a populated hidden city deep in the bush and everybody speaks perfect english? I lived in South America for a year and i met two people who could speak english.
5 Luckily this is the final game in this trilogy that wraps up the early years of Lara´s career. It needs to end now!

    So what is good?
Well, graphics are gorgeous, and there finally is more Tombs to raid, But boy do the rewards really sucks. but none of them are that challenging really. I always wanted this game to pay some more focus to what Lara is known for and that is raiding tombs.. I get it, 3 games in and Lara is starting to find her inner self rather thank ancient artifacts, Tomb Raider.. It is the title of the damn game anyway.
Controls are good, Maybe too much auto assisted.

Overall, i think this game needs a new direction, possibly a new developer. I think Square has exhausted this franchise enough.. Square Enix, who is known for RPG and Fantasy games, has a hard time authenticating this franchise. To me all three games has provided me with plenty adventure, but i feel that they all are set in a world i have a hard time to feel and attach myself too.
After three games in, they have not developed so much in terms of new features, movements, design, story and gameplay. It feels rehashed now and its time to end it. Pass on the torch and start something else.
I did not bother with a New Game Plus.. You play this game once, collect the **** for achievements and move on.

First of all I am by no means a hardcore fan or played many of the games so far, so this review is as honest as it can be. I was thinking about buying this franchise title for a while and did recently. The journey was very worthwhile.

    World // Engine // Graphics // Sound // Atmosphere : 10/10
I love the semi-open the open world. It gives guidance without being plain useless. It still brings comfort options such as fast traveling and the engine seems solid. My PS4 Pro with SSD had no hiccups at all. The engine looks amazing wiht much love to detail. The animals are beautiful, weapons and items are reflected seamless on the character. Hair is still an optimization factor but did not bother me much.

The sound arena is spectacular and brings an intense atmosphere to the ground. Crawling thorugh dark tombs, shadows casting to the walls, vast seas, beautiful waterfalls, lava caverns and nice towns. The stage is set and game makes a lot out of it. I was stunned by the scenery and took more then one amazing screenshot.

    Controls // Mechanics: 6/10
One of my personal negative spots are the mechanics. Yes, the game has indicators on the surroundings much similar to genre titles such as Uncharted but it still feels sometimes that things are not in the proper place. Some jumps land into the void which should not. Some grapple spots are so unforgiving that even due to the very solid auto save feature, sometimes it just killed my nerves. I think they should have used one or two mechanics less to make it more simplistic because stuff as the over-head grapple wasnt used much either. There are some few passages that could ve been shortened and some challenge tombs are a little bit too irritating when it comes to pathing.

    Story // Puzzles: 9/10 - 6/10
The story feels very generic. At some point I had a though of an 2019 Indiana Jones classic remake which made me laugh for a second. After all the story is still fun and well made with love to details and characters. Of course some stuff is pretty much head over heals hollywood. Having a girl climbing mountains, jumping over small pikes etc. etc. but in one scene she gets hand to drop down a 2 meter deep hole... had to laugh again but its okay. Laras sidekick is a nice addition to the game but they could ve made more out of that. Some passages made me slap my forehead hard. Like rescue someone to get someone else captured to capture this person to get another one captured really pissed me off at a point.

The puzzles are okay-ish to awkward. Some are simple, some are more complex. I cannot say that they were all bad but some were unnecessary time consuming.

    Combat // Weaponry 9/10:
Combat in general feels pretty fluent. I was a little bit irritated about the gun heavy bits at the end because for a while I was pretty sure that I would be able to finish it 100% stealth. Ducking, running, covering, jumping from trees, shooting guns, arrows, poison, flares. Lara got it all and it is fun although for a normal playthorugh you will need not much to finish it.

Normal wildlife and special wildlife can be killed very easily even without use of special stuff or weaponry. Soldiers can be a little more persistent but then it is still not much to overcome at normal difficulty, which still feels rewarding. The final boss is little bit more of a challenge still more of a long drawn battle then really complex.

The weapon set is exciting. Multiple bows, handguns, shotguns, rifles and a knife complete the arsenal together with normal and specialized ammo. Most of them can be upgraded with ressources that respawn indefinitely in the game. Ontop of that you can skill Lara within three different categories, most of which I never really needed.

    Summary:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider on sale is worth the bucks it takes. A solid playthrough with some trophy catching will take you around 15-30 hrs for a full clean you will need more time and at least two playthroughs. The world is semi open with much love for detail and atmosphere. The mechanics are decent but overloaded at times. Lara itself is displayed in a positive and adventurous way. Puzzles are a bit of a let down but the game overall provides solid fun.

    Would buy again on sale.

The whole rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy has been absolutely stellar, and this game caps it off excellently. The graphics here are beautiful; some of the best on PS4 when it comes to the stunning environments and super-detailed main character models. Lara herself looks brilliant in particular, and is again voiced expertly by Camilla Luddington, however some of the NPCs can look rather generic and sometimes the difference in detail between Lara and someone she is talking to can be a little jarring.

Gameplay-wise, this plays very similarly to the previous Tomb Raider reboot entries, which seems to be drawing very heavily from Uncharted. However a few additional mechanics have been added, such as a grappling hook, enhanced stealth, and a new emphasis on underwater sections and swimming, which can add some great tension when squeezing through a gap underwater then rushing to the surface or nearest opening for a quick gasp of air.

The game world itself is a little more open than in Rise of the Tomb Raider, and there are plenty of expertly designed tombs to be found and conquered. I did feel that a few of them were a little difficult to find however, even when using the map to direct you. The waypoint system is something that could be improved, and this has been true for the whole trilogy.

If you enjoyed the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, or Rise of the Tomb Raider, then this is a must-buy. I would definitely recommend playing those games first however to get the most out of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, as there is a story continuation throughout them all which is wrapped up satisfyingly here.

In Rise of Tomb Raider they did a great job, conveying what Lara is going through her face, using an advanced MoCap technology and highly detailed facial models. You could feel for her, empathise with her. In this game facial animations and the models in general somehow look worse than in the first game, you feel completely thrown out of the immersion. The worst thing is the critics that defend this game as though it's a well made product. For the next instalment, I hope to see Crystal Dynamics taking back the charge of their franchise, instead of passing it off to another studio, and restoring it back to its glory. Expand

    A lot.

In what is easily the worst of the Tomb Raider reboot ("Tomb Raider" / "Rise of the Tomb Raider"), "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" somehow takes a major step -back- on its mechanics. It's awful to the point where you stop caring if you die because you don't really feel like it's really in your control, anyway. Pretty much every escape/run-from-the-impending-disaster scene will take multiple attempts, though somehow I managed to do the Oil Field escape without dying. Also, the scramble button is rendered almost completely useless in melee - you get hit most of the time, anyway.

For contrast, the game I played before this, "Assassin's Creed Odyssey," I played for 120 hours. in 1/3 or less of playing time, Lara died approximately 5x more than Kassandra did. Dying's part of any game, of course. After playing through the entire Uncharted series and all the other Tomb Raiders, I'm fairly convinced that no single person could take on an entire private militia by themselves and win in real life. And as frustrating as dying can be, players are generally ok coming back for more -if they're having fun.- The ridiculous final battle (where there are plenty of places to hide but it doesn't seem to matter because they see you no matter where you run/jump/climb) is one of those moments where if you weren't so close the end, you'd just quit out of spite. You just don't -care- to come back and do better/different.

Yausarl's review (currently listed as most helpful critical review) also hits upon some major flaws - combat content is greatly reduced, making the offensive upgrades and skills you acquire another "so what?" about this game. As an example, one of the trophies you can get is "20 headshots with arrows." I love the silent bow-play from the last two games, but those opportunities do not exist here unless you force it. You can't stay hidden for long. The AI is bad along the lines of "Assassin's Creed: Unity" where you'd be blended with crowds and the guards would still see you do things.

The tombs aren't even that fun. I TRIED not to look up walkthroughs, but in the 8 or so challenge tombs that exist, I needed a walkthrough for 3 of them. Two because I never would have found the path to the next step, and one I just never would have figured out, so not very satisfying there, either.

Finally, if you insist on playing this title, just set up the audio for English voiceovers. I get what they were going for with the immersion of having locals speak to you in their language, but the language spoken in the Hidden City, especially, is either the most inefficient language ever (like saying "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" as slowly as possible only for it to translate to "ok") or the subtitle is the extreme Cliff's Notes version thereof. Oh, and I would highly recommend "cheating" when you're setting the brightness and the gamma toward the "bright" side. I was honest about it, unfortunately, and battles with the "never miss" Yaaxil were pretty much a grind (refer to useless scramble mechanic above) as half the time I couldn't see them (even with Survival Instincts) or see where I was going when running for breathing room.

Positives - Camilla Luddington's voicework as Lara is once again quite good, despite the poor writing, and Carlos Leal as the self-righteous villain, Amaru/Dr. Dominguez, does his best to make his character multi-faceted. There's also a lovely cut-scene of a revenge-bent Lara emerging in silhouette from flaming water after she's been told to retrieve a friend's body and she's in full predator mode (currently top match on youtube with "lara flaming water"). But I have very little positive to say about the gameplay here. A huge disappointment after two fairly interesting predecessors. This feels like a thrown together money-grab because, goddammit, we've got to finish a trilogy!

From my perspective the best of the new trilogy. Perhaps the story is just "ok" the game offers plenty of new scenarios and more action and the option of not listening to Lara every single time she finds a relic.

As someone who love the Tomb Raider franchise, I'm a little disappointed with this one. Besides the story I really liked, the combat is missing, it's almost a explorable open world with 2-3 fights to get you some action, but that's it. The trilogy comes to an end and still glad I had the pleasure to play, but this is my last favorite.

    -Good voice acting as always.
    -Good controls.
    -Good optimized.

    WHATS BAD:
    -Short campaign as always.
-Almost non existing side quests that have story or anything.
-Collectibles are boring to collect and have no meaning.
-Totally useless Upgrade tree and useless weapons that you won't use because lack of fight encounters in the game. Most of the game you are running free and no enemies to be found.
-Game is very easy and there are hits allover the place.
    -Lack of content.

It still a good beautiful and enjoyable game but not worth the 60$ because of lack of content and combat with very poor useless upgrading tree. 25$ or less would be worth the pick.

What I want to see from future TR-Games. I would like a lot of side quests to do here and there instead of brainless collectibles. Also I would like a longer campaign and A LOT more enemys encounters so I can enjoy some action so that the skill tree would mean something.

They put such hard work in creating one of the most beautiful environment I've seen in a game yet the lack of content is disastrous and makes me sad as hell.

If the dialog doesn't make your eyes roll, the dialog delivery of many of the NPCs will. I know this remote village in Peru does not all speak perfect English. I'm fine with reading subtitles because that at least makes the game feel less cheap. I like learning about the mythology through finding items but this just feels like all digging around and no story.

Single. Misstep. And water levels, too! This game takes every feasible misstep for a Tomb Raider game. For the first time since the series was rebooted, you can see the true ugly roots of TR in this new adventure: the incredibly stupid plot, the incoherent script, the ludicrous premise, the straight up fear of any sort of change to the character of Lara or the world she inhabits. Then there's the ugly, dark, muddy environments, the regurgitated gameplay and setpieces that fail to excite - and even when they do excite, they feel UNEARNED, like the crowning of the Queen of the Damned scene, for example.

The first two got by on a plot of less is more, environmental and inferred story telling whilst here... it's as much magic god lasers and bright lights as the series ever had, making any semblance of mystery disappear in the cackle of the players' laughter. And don't get me started on the damn towns - who thought THAT was a good idea?! Because you saw them in Uncharted 4?! Uncharted 4 has them as a momentary setpiece, a backdrop to make the world feel lived in, not going on fetch quests for children and buying top of the line guns from tribal merchants! What were you thinking?!

Technically, the game is a true marvel - highly detailed environments, effects, particles, mud, facial expressions, tesselation - all to display a world that is just plain, unimaginative, flat, monochrome and, for a VERY large part of the game, way too dark to even play through properly without squinting and falling to your death in the dark. Yes, I adjusted my settings, but apparently nobody playtested this on a OLED television.

Mechanically, the controls are wonky, with the highly detailed and diverse terrain never quite meshing with the characters floating on it, or through it, resulting in a lot of accidental deaths, slips, and plain getting stuck - but mostly, just not looking quite as convincing as in previous games.

Finally I want to make one suggestion to Crystal Dynamics - find the person who said "diving sections are a staple of the older Tomb Raider games", and boil that person alive until done. It's 2019. It has NOT been long enough for game designers to forget that EVERYBODY HATES WATER LEVELS.

Let me repeat that - DO. NOT. PUT. DIVING. LEVELS. IN. YOUR. GAMES. It's not a fun mechanic, it was not fun in the 90's, it wasn't fun in the 00's, and it's not fun now. It's dead for a reason. Do not bring it back.

This game is bland, boring, ugly, and a massive disappointment.

Where this really shines as a Tomb Raider game is in the exploration and puzzle department. The feeling of risk and isolation is huge, especially if you play on Deadly Obsession. Some early platforming bugs that left to accidental deaths have thankfully been ironed out.

I enjoyed the RPG skill-based elements, they really suit the game and set it apart from the otherwise quite similar Uncharted series. However, there is too much focus on collecting parts to upgrade guns, when they make very little difference, and by the time your guns are powered up there are only about 3 proper combat sequences that need them. That said, the bow is as fun as ever and the shooting mechanics work perfectly. I hope the DLC will bring some combat missions.

The only down side is that the story is quite laboured and not especially gripping. The "key" and the "box" just felt like plot devices to progress the game, rather than a self contained story. The previous two games were better in that sense.

I highly recommend this game, it loses a point because the story wasn't as engaging as it could be.

Nice finish to something that I hope is staying a trilogy. A bit more openness to the world with a lot more sidekicks, nice visuals, but nothing extraordinary that we haven't seen before in the two Tomb Raiders before this. I like how Eidos has given players options to customize the gameplay. Also default skipping Lara commenting upon the collectibles she finds was great. That was such an annoying speed bump for the first 2. I don't mind how there is less gunfights than the first 2 because I get to explore the area more. It's still fun coming across enemies as Eidos has given you multiple ways of taking them on. Eidos has kept the game interesting enough that I will replay it later. They achieved excellent results. SotTR reminded me a lot of TR Anniversary as well as TR II and TR III. Beautiful locations, solid story, very interesting and atmospheric tombs.
They improved quite a few things in comparison with the previous game (RotTR). It concerns:
    1) quality of the foliage, which became a lot better;
    2) interaction with the foliage is more advanced too;
    3) Lara model and some other major models are a bit more enhanced;
    4) water quality is much better;
    5) tombs and crypts became more sophisticated;
    6) some in-game animations (like Lara's movements in certain positions) are better, more real;
    6) AA is higher quality.
This game really knows a lot about shadows, as they are a big part of it. And the quality of shadows is great.
Combat is as good as it was before, they didn't change it much, just reduced the quantity of action scenes in favour of exploration. There are many things to explore: outstanding locations, a lot of challenge tombs, more advanced crypts (than in RotTR), many side quests.
I loved the soundtrack too. It presents great feeling of presence.
The game has different pace, than the two previous TR games. There are a few action scenes, but it relies more on exploration thing. I am not sure that this pace is better, but I think the devs arranged it well. They've succeeded in making this game interesting and compelling.
SotTR might not be the best action-adventure game of all times, but it definitely deserves praise, respect and admiration.

I would like to add, that Square Enix, unlike some other publishers (Activision and Rockstar, for instance), do really care about the quality of their games. So the devs (EM) were able to eliminate all the major flaws of the game - big input lag and some other bugs. Blur intensity is fine. So the game plays perfect, as smooth as silk and does not distract player with any substantial issues.
I also would like to thank developers for the top notch PS4 Pro optimization. They achieved 1872p and rock solid framerate (there are few dips only during some cut-scenes). Excellent job! If I had not known that this is multiplatfom game, I would be sure it is PS4 exclusive, as the optimization for Sony console is really smart.

So taking into account all the factors, in my humble opinion, SotTR deserves 10 out of 10. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you, Eidos Montreal, for the opportunity to play this game. I really hope TR franchise will continue to evolve and please it's fans and admirers with new, more and more exquisite, thorough and refined games.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider should leave us wanting more from the rebooted Lara Croft game, but with some clunky controls and a lazy combat system, what saves the game from being below average are beautiful visuals, fantastic puzzles and tomb layouts along with true adventuring. It’s as mixed up of a bag as one can get.
