I really didn't like the game. The plot, the dialogues are just horror. The locations, despite the fact that they are kind of colorfully done, are boring and not interesting. The weakest game in the reboot trilogy.

This game is great. I have not played the other 2 games of the revamped series but this is absolutely fantastic. Semi open world, great story, great gameplay and great atmsphere. Also, there are some challenging puzzles. If you like ancient civilizations this game is for you. Some bugs here and there, but nothign that makes it unplayable.

I had issues with the following:
    - Story was lackluster, character development was abysmal (Lara is still the same stubborn woman it's like she learned nothing from ROTR)
    - Lighting was terrible (the flashlight randomly turns on at the wrong moments, easy to miss certain things, etc.) - no difference from the original 'Rise of the Tombraider' - expected more, whether its improved

Not quite as good as the uncharted series, but still very good. I agree with most of the positive reviews. The best tomb raider game in years and possibly the best ever. Graphics are top notch, the stealth kills are a good addition. One of the best games I've played on my ps5. Highly recommend.

A weak copy of uncharted. Mostly jumping from cliff to cliff, swimming, and gathering resources for weapon upgrades that were not necessary at all (Due to lack of enough combat).

It’s a very fun game. The story wasn’t particularly compelling for me, but the open-world gameplay and environmental puzzles were a lot of fun. The crafting system was engaging—albeit limited—and the combat was consistently entertaining. While I ultimately preferred Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a worthy addition to the modern franchise.

The Tombs are great visually and mechanically, most of them. All else is somewhat normal if not bad. Action sequences are worst part of the game.

Just like the previous games (and, by extension, the Uncharted games), Shadow of the Tomb Raider has some great setpieces, nice visual, and some fun but shallow gameplay. Unfortunately, these games have always had mediocre stories, and this one is no exception. Lara Croft is unbearably shallow. Somehow, the writers thought that making her get hurt a lot would add some depth to her character, which is honestly a stupid idea. And unlike Uncharted, you can't argue that the story being shallow is the point. The writers clearly tried here, and failed miserably. As she is now, Lara Croft is whiny, unsympathetic and overall just unlikable.

If you've enjoyed the Uncharted games or the previous Tome Raider games, you'll probably like this one. If not, avoid it like the plague.

All the crafting and pointless little side missions that take time away from progressing with the main story get on my nerves. I like how they're starting to bring Tomb Raider back to its origins by focusing more attention on puzzles and and exploration, but for me they're going about it in the wrong way.

The mechanics were okay but could be quite glitchy at times, there's definitely room for improvement there; also, the feel on the stick when moving Lara around felt a bit too light, like I was moving around a helium balloon. The combat was so-so. The story was pretty bland, could have been a lot more gripping. The graphics were pretty good, but for 2018 even they felt lacking in certain areas (the character models for example). The main highlights for me were the puzzles and some very beautifully designed environments, could tell how much time and effort must have gone into them.

Overall, I found Shadow of the Tomb Raider an average experience at best.

Shadow of the Tomb raider is a classical action adventure game with top quality Hollywood style plot. Most of these are well implented, and allow different play styles with good difficulty level. The most annoying I find are the quick-time eventish running scene where you are basically always running from something and have to react to falling things and stuff, they aren't real QTEs so there's no button prompts but you still have to memorise what do on each step and it's usually not obvious at all so it just becomes annoying. The camera is sometimes quite bad and especially swimming is torture. Other than that there is no big problems in the game. The music is top notch and the voice acting is passable. I kind of like using native languages for npc's but calling it immersive is quite absurd, that's not quite how it works in real world. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a great game! There were really great environments, fun and challenging tombs to raid, and exploration that didn't seem like a chore. I really like how you can set the difficulty settings for each of the ways you like to be challenged. You can decide separately how difficult you want the puzzles, exploration, and combat to be. I only knocked it down a point for the ridiculous story. I know that the premise of the series is rather unbelievable, but the plot doesn't really resolve satisfyingly. All in all, it was a really fun game! Expand

Shadow of Tomb Raider, reviewed on PS5 with PS4 edition.
    The Goods:

Overall animations of looting/playing in general is good. I noticed some subtle animations added to Laura which makes the game feel better. Having 60FPS option is great and so is 4K, but I have to select only one, and 9/10 times I select frame-rate. Sadly I lose amazing 4K graphics that game designers worked on!

    Amazing visuals even in cutscenes!
    Crafting improved a lot!

    The Bads:
Story is by far the weakest, but the setting is SO GOOD! Good side characters but somehow story does not feel well made.
Character animations aren't great on Lara, this does not feel like 2018 game.
Hair, mouth animations and quality also could have been better.
Fire effects are straight up from 20 years ago, have you seen them!?
Lost of things are added for sake of adding it, like upside down scaling cliff, I think it's a gimmick and does not work well on several occasions where I was doing everything correctly, yet I died.
Game is heavily inspired by Uncharted series and I can tell. This is good, but when you compare, controls are way better in Uncharted.
Also game clearly can handle 4K/60 but somehow we have to choose one or another :(

    Would I recommend? YES

As a trophy hunter I find this game an absolute trash for trophy hunting. Playing on Deadly obsession difficulty. You go through one hour of playing then you somehow die because of a stupid bug.

Poor little rich girl Lara Croft white knighting her way around South America saving the indigenous people while pilfering any relic that isn't nailed down. Mechanically solid, but the narrative is at best dull, and more often cringe worthy.

    Pros:
-Nice story (the kind of story you should expect from a Tomb Raider Game)
    -Nice ending
    -Beautiful world
-I really, really, really enjoyed the puzzles
-Runs amazingly well on the PS5

    Cons:

Why have NPCs talk in their native languages when Lara always answers them in English? Nothing lost in translation.
Overall, the gameplay is slightly more enjoyable than in Rise. It has craftable outfits which give you slight advantages when worn. The game forces you to wear two outfits for ¾ of the game. Well done, devs.
The whole series lack good characters (the only one being Jesus from Rise) which makes Tomb Raider look like a weak alternative to Uncharted.
I'm glad journos (except for Lucy the virgin-shamer) finally realised these games are not extraordinary in any way and lowered their scores from 9/10 to 7/10.

I even prefer it over Rise of the Tomb Raider because I felt the snowy environments in that one made for a visually repetitive experience. The gameplay here is also far more dynamic than its ever been; A much deeper emphasis on stealth, and the combat environments allow for more aerial traversal that wasn't as prevalent in previous entries. I also thought the parkour segments were very impressive, giving you a plethora of new tools that make exploration feel brand new again. It makes the climbing segments in Jedi Fallen Order feel like an absolute joke in comparison. There's weight to every impact. Even though it's generally pretty easy, I always feel like I'm scurrying by a thin thread. Swinging off ropes is so exhilirating like a rollercoaster ride. It's as enjoyably cinematic as you'd want.

Story-wise, I found the game to be a little more by-the-numbers, but there were definitely some series highlights with Lara's childhood flashback sequence and a nice emphasis on her friendship with Jonah. I can't even remember the villain's name or what he really wanted, and he overall doesn't have a strong presence throughout the story, but I can at least say that exploring tombs and uncovering the big mystery was more than enough to stay interested in Lara's plight. She just seems so desperate and you can't help but route for her as she throws her life on the line. It's also refreshing for the genre that instead of raiding tombs for treasure, Lara is trying to prevent bad people from raiding them.

I think one of the bigger falters was unfortunately Shadow's newest integration: There's plenty of side missions and a hub-world to explore but I never cared to do any of it. The biggest problem with them is not only their fetch-quest nature, but their automated cutscenes. My biggest pull for the Tomb Raider reboots have always been their top-notch motion capture performances and the work Camila Luddington puts into her role. All of that is still present in the main story. But that caliber of storytelling sadly gets lost in the procedural cutscenes, and it doesn't help that the stories within them are not all that interesting. I think it works in games like Fallout and Skyrim that are built around a sandbox world, but in a linear game like Tomb Raider, it just grinds the momentum to a halt. Thankfully they're largely skippable, but it unfortunately makes the game feel on the shorter side by choosing to ignore them.

Ultimately, I'd rather have a 10-12 hour game full of highlights and fun moments than a 19 hour game that feels stretched out. I'd probably say Shadow is my 2nd favorite of the reboot trilogy. It has the best gameplay and graphics by far, so I definitely see it having a higher replayability than the others. But I still think the first reboot game has a far more memorable and compelling story. And all the gameplay mechanics that are expanded and refined in Shadow, wouldn't exist without that game. Shadow still makes for a worthwhile entry, but I would be sad if this is really the closer for the franchise. It makes for a good closer in a Skyfall kind of way, but definitely leaves me craving more. I don't know if I'm ready to say goodbye to this version of Lara.

However in the case of this game it made it very hard to enjoy and appreciate the game. There's no difference in combat difficulty between Hard and Deadly Obsession, the only difference being no save points (you die you have to redo the whole level again), so I can't find much point in the harder difficulty. It was beyond frustrating because I only died once in the entire game due to the difficulty of the combat. The other times I died were due to camera angle malfunctions and glitches in the platforming meaning I had redo 30-40 minutes of gameplay again that I solved first run with combat simply because I missed a jump by the smallest of margins. This really detracted from the game for me. The story and general gameplay was good but found the difficulty and difficulty to get the trophy pointless. No dying doesn't make a game more challenging. The combat health and puzzles are what do. Put that aside though, and it wa still a great game. Expand

Gameplay? As much as you can expect from the previous 2 Tomb Raiders, the same great platforming, puzzle-solving and combat mechanics are brought in and fine tuned in this last installment. Platforming is still awesome due to the fact that they have indeed improved Lara's animations. She glides, swims, rappels with great ease and you feel great controlling her due to the fluid controls. Combat has been put to the backseat in this installment, and it's not a bad thing. The only issue I have is the stealth kills could be more violent and impactful. Tomb exploring has been put into more emphasis now. And you will be invested in alot of it due to its great design.

Graphics? Great, very impressive. The environments have been vastly improved. Foliage, dirt, mud, surfaces and lighting has been improved. I played on very high graphical settings and its just a visual bliss. SOTTR world and its tombs is a great time to spend time in.

Story? Mediocre to be honest. Crystal Dynamic opted for a "apocalypse is imminent and we must stop it" thrope and its not exactly the most compelling story arc to be invested in. I do enjoy the flashback segment and also more character development for Lara.

Overall, Crystal Dynamics played it safe, and well. Not taking to much risks but also not exactly innovating. Its no Uncharted 4. But for a Tomb Raider game, its great and a blast to play. A solid 7.8!

ReusingThe third and—allegedly—final installment in the "origins reboot trilogy", Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an adventure/action videogame with light role-playing and Metroidvania elements that doesn't seek to revolutionize either the franchise or the genre. In fact, it sticks to the formula and concepts of the first two entries too close, only adding a few quality-of-life improvements. Reusing what has worked in the past can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, returning fans of the series can expect to experience all the things that made them fall in love with the two previous titles of the origins reboot trilogy: hunting wild animals, crafting materials and improving gear using resources collected, solving puzzles, doing optional tombs and side quests, and founding different types of collectibles, it is all there. Conversely, providing gameplay otherwise identical to that of Rise of the Tomb Raider leads to seriously questioning if the franchise has once more stalled and if it's time for it to take another break. Perhaps. In any case, the gaming experience is solid for the most part (minor imprecisions in the platforming and with how the camera controls) and, at the end of the day, quite satisfying.

Beyond the cliched argument that sets the game in motion, Shadow of the Tomb Raider tries to conclude Lara Croft's origins storyline on a personal level. It is a precautionary tale about human nature and how far a person will go to accomplish its goals, whether valid or not. As a result of this more insightful approach to the game's narrative, the action had to be kept in check for two purposes: one, to give the characters more time to reflect on the world and their actions, and two, to grow tension and make these moments more impactful. Does it pay off? Aside from one masterfully crafted sequence/scene mid into the game, not in the epic way the developers wished for. It doesn't help the fact that, despite Camilla Luddington's utterly brilliant performance, the Lara Croft character falls somewhat flat because of the underwhelming cast of individuals (except her friend, Jonah Meave) she's paired with: supporting roles are passable at best while the antagonist feels like a greatly missed opportunity. The narrative works ok but it isn't something outstanding in the end.

Finally, if there is anything in Shadow of the Tomb Raider that deserves absolute praise are its visuals and art direction. True, character models don't achieve photorealistic status—in fact, they are a bit off—but the landscapes, the tombs, and the in-game relics are astonishingly beautiful, with the latter paying so much attention to details that could easily pass as exact replicas of the real thing. It goes to show the developers put their heart into studying and researching materials and lore to finally achieving such an outstanding result. Simply gorgeous.

    CONCLUSION
Shadow of the Tomb Raider may not be the epic conclusion everyone was hoping for but it is a very good game in an otherwise fantastic trilogy. Yes, it doesn't do more than necessary, it misses some narrative opportunities, and it prioritizes functionality above else. However, the game still works and is quite an enjoyable ride despite the shortcomings. And, honestly, that's all that matters in the end.

Tombs are more numerous this time, and generally well-designed, with better ones reserved for DLCs. Combat and climbing are serviceable, but nothing special. The addition of a rope is welcome, but its uses are limited throughout the game, sadly.

The main weakness is, also still, the game's story, which largely mirrors Rise's, starts out in an intriguing way, but slows down to a halt promptly. Croft mostly acts like a whiny b**ch, her "lost my parents" backstory still doesn't make you care, Jonah is still an annoying friendzone type ("R U OK, LARAH?" constitutes 50+% of his dialogue), Trinity is a lame antagonist, and the aboriginal allies are forgettable cliches. The franchise continues to suffer from an identity crisis, with its gameplay mechanics more honed towards open-world style, while the levels are mostly tight limiting corridors. Plus, there is a strong imbalance in favor of exploration at the expense of combat, so you spend the majority of the game unlocking combat skills only to use them a handful of times. The game tries to stretch itself, as that's what AAA games are expected to do nowadays, unfortunately, so we also get a number of side missions, which are split into alright tomb missions and horrendously boring fetch quests, where only the strongest won't skip through the cringy dialogues and free 4 prisoners / talk to 5 natives / read 3 murals / etc.

The Tomb Raider reboot started out strong, but took a step back with its sequel, and a new developer studio couldn't shake things up. It's just an alright game worth picking up at a discount with all the DLCs included, which is a shame, as the potential to be something greater is still there.

Most underated game I played. Graphics looks 2018, mechanics too, Lara has nice character, story is good and this is the best TR I played. The best money spent in my life.

Shadow didn't improve on anything from the first two games, if anything it took major steps back.

I just finished it and i enjoyed every aspect of the game.
Yes it is not a huge improvement over their previous games and that's why they did not delay it but still they made some changes here and there which made it an amazing cinematic single player experience!
( I don't know if this is right to say it here but i hate seeing people saying that it is like Uncharted... You know that

You know that Lara existed before Drake, they are both archaeologists searching for treasures, ruins. Of course they have their similarities and yes i am a fan of both games and i still enjoy them!)

The only thing that i hated was their decision to make the game kinda short (about 12 hours) and make you purchase the Season Pass if you would like more adventures of Lara... Aside from that it deserves every penny, especially if you have an RTX GPU. And believe me, they made a very good job with the performance which makes it run butter smooth!

I know they did their best to market this game enough with all those trailers but i still think that it could get a bit more recognition from players that enjoy Single Player games...

The worst in the trilogy BY FAR.

The game is more of the same but with way less enemies and a lot more piss easy puzzle sections which feel boring to play through. Also the story feels very rushed, full of uninteresting characters and mcGufinns.
The game looks good, expecially the tombs, which makes raiding them better, but playing it feels like a chore, I stopped playing it about 70% through.

Shallow story aside, Shadow of the Tomb Raider has the best tomb exploration in the series, and that’s what it’s all about.

Still very good, but in some ways weaker than the previous game. Still, fans shouldn’t miss it, just because it is the conclusion of the trilogy. [Issue#289]

Shadow of the Tomb Raider should leave us wanting more from the rebooted Lara Croft game, but with some clunky controls and a lazy combat system, what saves the game from being below average are beautiful visuals, fantastic puzzles and tomb layouts along with true adventuring. It’s as mixed up of a bag as one can get.
