This game is a masterpiece. SImple. Everything is amazing about it, the story, the colossi, the characters, the gameplay. Though the camera is bad and the controls are questionable. And the physics aspect of the game makes climbing the colossi very wonky and frankly more unrealistic. But i will still give this piece of art a 10/10. Would give it 100/10 if i could.

The collosi can be frustrating puzzles, the story is anything but funny, and the controls are absolutely garbage. Yet Shadow of the Collosus may very well be the greatest game ever made. The game is proof that games can be artwork, and a testament to the times when developers put more care into there games in trying to make something special rather than another hit free to play game. The game creates a perfect cycle of working with the story, and then using the time between Collosi to reflect on the tiny details the game gives you about its story, then relieving the boredom with a new collosus. Not only this, but the game has, in my opinion, the best ending in all of video game history. I would say more, but this game should be played with very, very, VERY little beforehand knowledge. It is Worth every cent.

Only negatives I had with the game were the camera and the lack of story in between every colossal defeat. I question wether the camera was made with the intent for the player to have to fight it as an extra challenge or it was an artistic choice. Either way, I felt it was an unnecessary headache to deal with that would of been better if we had a choice with a different camera, one less combative. Overall, this game is a must play, I highly recommend it! Expand

    Pros:

+ Climbing colossi feels dangerous and Wander clings to his life with bare hands until his stamina runs out.
+ Exploring open world feels very much like a real-life hiking trip. The game has no filler activities of the modern open-world games. It could look empty to some, but I actually enjoyed it. Quite refreshing after Assassin's Creed series.
+ The music is still epic. The soundtrack didn't age a bit.

    Cons:
    - With the new game engine, the game looks much more generic than the original. I feel that the game lost some of its abstract geometric poetry with this new rendering. Also, the grass popup distracts more than it should.
    - At its core, this is a puzzle game. So at certain points I was annoyed. Especially, when the new hd rendering made finding interactive spots harder. In my teenage years I was much more forgiving for this kind of stuff.

Wasn’t going to write a review for this but never in my entire life have I seen an audience get something all so very very wrong. What am I reading and seeing here? Never have I been more disappointed in humanity than I am right now seeing all those red reviews.

This is the greatest damn video game ever crafted with haunting themes of loss and despair. I think many people just do not have the deep sensitivity required in order to truly appreciate the power and haunting beauty of this game. I almost do not even want to call it a game. It’s beyond that when something is able to make you feel so deeply. I cried in the end…most of these people will never be able to possess the ability to feel what the character in this game is feeling. The desire, the determination that no matter what the cost….he’d do anything necessary to bring the love of his life back from the dead.

I will say this…the critics here are the correct ones. And thank the heavens for that. If I listened to all the idiots here I’d miss out on the greatest cinematic masterpiece I have ever experienced. And I’ve platinumed this game. I’ve spent 120 hours on it according to my ps5. It’s my most beloved and cherished video game of all time. I bought two physical special editions of the game. One for myself and my brother. This is how much this video game means to me.

The critics didn’t review this game for the average moron that’s out there. Of course they knew most people wouldn’t understand this masterpiece. This game is made for people such as myself who admire the finer things life has to offer. Someone that smells the roses while going for walks. Admires beautiful sunsets. Listens to the birds as they fly over cascading waterfalls…..the critics reviewed this game based on what Fumito Ueda envisioned this game to be. The loneliness, the despair, the way the horse handles….every little damn detail in this game is exactly how it was intended to be. It’s not supposed to be easy to climb those colossal beasts…it’s supposed to be an agonizing task in which when you succeed you feel as if you have conquered the world.

I’m glad the critics see this game for what it truly is. Shame on all those bad reviews but I’ve always knew this to be true. Most people on this planet are not exactly spiritual and introspective people.
It’d be like trying to show someone with a bery corrupt mentality and view of nature why the waterfall is so beautiful and they’ll just say…but it’s just a waterfall. You either see it or you don’t. You either believe it or you don’t. I for one, am happy to say that I see what the critics see. People are going to talk to me about awful controls? Seriously? The horse controls as if I’m actually riding an actual horse. It feels like he is a separate entity to the main character and feels like it has a mind of its own. You really have to command him to stop. The horse honestly controls itself and moves freely through the corridors without much need for player control. People are just clueless or upset that this game was praised so much and rightfully so. I had no problems navigating through the game but then again this game is my cup of tea…I hate shooters and nonsensical stupid games. I like contemplative experiences like this where you just navigate through the environment without anyone holding your hand.

This is perhaps the most misunderstood product of all time. People are just not used to this kind of game and are gonna bash something they don’t like because it’s not their conventional Zelda like game.

This game is REAL. The creator wanted you to feel every breath of wind and every blade of grass. He wanted you to be in the footsteps of wander and boy, the final 10 minutes are some of the most emotional moments I have ever witness in a gamer.

However, when it comes to the gameplay it remains simple and it serves well the idea of playing with a weak character in the face of its challenges, as the controversial camera continues to have a lot of difficulty in showing the combat against colossal beings without being impossible to understand what is happening sometimes.

Going straight to the point, there weren't any major mechanical advances in this new version of the game however if you're a fan of the original it won't matter, as what makes Shadow of the colossus unique is its incredible narrative that guides you through its contemplative scenarios and memorable songs in unique combats where the combination of these elements makes each event unique.

If you are an old fan of the franchise this game is mandatory, however if this is your first experience, I recommend caution do not expect a big open world with thousands of side quests or something like that, but a remarkable narrative experience where not everything will be played in your face in cutscene.

Personally I love the game and can look past some of the annoying things about it. But there are certainly some minor things that for some can kill their enjoyment of the game the biggest thing being the controls. I wouldn't say there bad but they do feel old which makes sense seeing as the game was originally on the PS2. The controls take some time to get use to but again I wouldn't call them bad except maybe the horse which was annoying to control the whole way through. What the game gets right is pretty much everything else though. The visuals on the PS4 are just breath taking when you first experience them. And the boss fights are mostly pretty good. It's like trying to solve a puzzle while also fighting a boss and I love that. Most of the Colossus are great other then maybe 2 of them who were fairly similar to each other. And the finale colossus was a little disappointing if I'm being honest. Along with all that the music is top notch and the story is interesting but also goes on the backburner for most of the game. Most of the plot happens at the beginning and the end of the game with little happening in between you slaying colossus. Which works for what the game is and also helps with the twist that happens by the end. In conclusion Shadow of the Colossus is certainly a unique game and I think that it's a game you should at least try to play once so long as you can deal with some weird controls. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

It really shows how much effort they put into making each fight unique and fun. Unfortunately, that's pretty much it... Traveling through the world is boring and there's no other fun stuff to do besides beating the colossi. Controls are clunky, but since it's a remake of a PS2 game I won't be too harsh about it, although maybe they should've done something about it.
The only positive aspect about this game is fighting the colossi, the rest is pretty boring and the story barely adds anything to it.

A pretty great game to me, honestly, but maybe not everyone's cup of tea. If it were a $10 indie game you'd be proud of yourself for having stumbled upon such a breathtaking diamond in the rough, if it were an overhyped $60 AAA title with eight months of previews leading up to it you'd be pretty sorely disappointed. I dunno which one this was originally, I just thought the trailer looked cool

This story is about Wander and his horse Agro on their journey to save a girl named Mono. In his attempt to revive her, Wander makes a deal with the entity named Dormin to slay all sixteen colossi in the forbidden land. By defeating each Colossi, Wander gets one step closer to completing the ritual which will allow for the resurrection of Mono. With almost no more information than this, Wander is thrust out into the forbidden land on his hunt for the first Colossus armed only with his horse, bow, and sword.
I played Shadow of the Colossus months ago for the first time but wanted to revisit it as for the month of March it is free to download with a PS Plus membership. I never played the original on PS2, so I did not have any nostalgia to influence my playthrough. Before I get into more detail, I want to say that this is an amazing game that you should try out while it is free, but it will not for everyone.
Shadow of the Colossus blew me away with how beautiful the landscape is despite its loneliness. Unlike most action-adventures, there are no towns, dungeons, or really anything to explore. Despite this, I was enthralled just riding Agro around seeing the different environments and the imposing Colossi from a distance. Although I would have liked more story and a more filled world, the reality is that the emptiness of it all adds to the mystery and loneliness of Wander’s seemingly insurmountable task. The colossi he faces range from humanoid to animalistic features from air, land, and sea. One common thing they share is that they are all massive compared to Wander. I view this as more of a puzzle game as the main gameplay loop is to figure out how to climb on to these Colossi made of stone and rock. After climbing to certain locations, Wander can attack critical points that are made of organic matter until eventually landing the final blow on the head of each colossi. Simple enough concept, but each Colossus offers a different challenge of attack patterns, and puzzle of how to climb to their weak points. These fights are magnificent in scale and further show the beauty of the artistic design of the game. Shadow of the Colossus also offers a photo mode which easily allows for some great wallpaper for any images you take of the environments and colossi. To further add to the ambience of the game, the fully orchestrated soundtrack pairs perfectly with the tone of each environment and colossus fight. I have been listening to the soundtrack again while writing this, and highly recommend you go and take a listen even if you don’t play the game.
This title is definitely worthy of its praise as one of the best PlayStation games ever created, but it does have its flaws. The camera angles can get a bit hard to manage during some boss fights and the controls are not the best compared to modern titles. The lack of a filled world adds to the overall mood of the game, but I really disliked having such a minimalistic story. With this remaster it would have been a great addition to add short cutscenes or unlockable lore for each colossi to understand them more. Finally, although I enjoyed the main gameplay loop the reality is this game will not be fun for many people. Once the method of climbing onto a colossus is discovered, the game is really just a climbing simulator while avoiding being shaken off. There is a thrill in discovering the pattern while avoiding attacks from a colossus, but then it just becomes monotonous climbing. Because of this, I highly recommend this title to those that love their games to be an artistic experience like Journey and say to those who aren’t to just give it a try. Not much to lose out on this title can be gotten for free this month. Shadow of the Colossus may not hit my top ten of all time as it will for others, but I give this amazing display of art an 85/100.

First of all, I really, really wanted to like this game. I've heard tons of great stuff, and a metacritic of 91 set high expectations.
Also, some other things to know before reading on:
    - I've never played the original. I have no nostalgic feelings or memories about the game. Prior to playing it, I've only heard the greatest of things about it.
    - If you like the game, that's awesome. This is not meant as an attack towards people who enjoy the game. As long as games draw people in, I'm happy. No matter if I myself don't enjoy something. There are simply some aspects that ruined the experience for me

So let's begin with my thoughts on the game.

    The Good:

    - Graphics. Obviously. I'm not sure if I've ever played a game that looked better. Maybe Red Dead Redemption 2. SotC is definitely a very pretty game.

    - Music. I wouldn't call the score a masterpiece, but it's somewhere between "very good" and "awesome" for me. I'll definitely listen to it some more in my own time.

    The Meh:

    - Story. Many people praise it to heights not achievable by anything else it seems. But to me, the (very, very small) bits of story did not really hit the mark. It's certainly not bad, but considering the bias I got by listening to other opinions, I was quite disappointed. There is a (kinda) clever twist, but I felt like it was too little too late to move me. The whole premise also isn't that great over all. There is MUCH better stuff out there that doesn't get nearly as much attention or praise. I can still see why people like it, though

    The Bad:

    - Controls. I'm NOT talking about the control-scheme (or button-mapping). This is about how using the controller translates to what's happening on screen. I get that the protagonist is supposed to be very young and inexperienced, but from a gameplay-perspective unresponsiveness and clunk (at least to that extent) are not justified by that.

    - Horse riding. Pretty much the worst riding controls I've ever come across. Tank controls in general are great (again, not about button-mapping) but the horse simply doesn't react to half my inputs. It slows down when I want to accelerate. It randomly takes a 90°-turn in an open field without me even touching the controller. It's unable to go faster than 2 km/h in forests (except in the very center of the "road"). Walking was often faster. In a game that is literally 50% riding, this can become a deal-breaker very quickly. Sure, a horse can have its own will, but this completely destroys any emotional connection with the horse I could have otherwise built.

    - Camera. Straight up the worst in the biz. Never have I experienced an ingame-camera even half that stubborn. Hell, most N64 games probably do better. The camera always tries to move to a "cinematic" point of view. That's generally not bad. Riding across a huge meadow can look stunning; having it zoom out while climbing a colossus breathtaking. But 99% of the time, it's just annoying. Even when trying to adjust it manually, the camera fights you. It always pans to a more impractical position. It doesn't help that the direction of climbing (on fur, for example) depends on how the camera is positioned. If it's turning all the time - which it often does when mounting a colossus, without the player getting much control over it - the left stick will have to be yanked in different directions countless times, just to move in ONE direction.
I could rant on, but I think the point came across.

Overall the experience could be described as this: I was not fighting the Colossi. I was killing them, but only through fighting the controls and the camera. I simply don't see that as justified for a modern game. Even a remaster such as this should have adjustments. Maybe even a toggle to switch between old and new controls/camera?

Finally, if the problems were the same in the original, I see how people call this a great remaster (I guess). So if you've loved the original despite the controls, by all means play this remaster. It's just that in this day and age, there is no way I can recommend it on its own.

One of the most beautiful games available on the PS4, SoTC competes toe to toe with major AAA titles like Uncharted 4 and Horizon in terms of art direction. The journey to each colossus through desolate lands was also pretty relaxing for me. Call me a weirdo but casually running through beautiful meadows under the sun searching through various ruins to find a colossus was a really great experience for me.

The USP of the game though, has to be its music. The loud, triumphant tunes that play when you're trying to cling on desperately to a colossus, or the sad, almost mocking tune whenever you kill them, it all adds to the atmosphere.

Not having played the previous iterations on the PS2 and PS3, this remake was my first introduction to this game. I went in expecting a heartfelt story and some truly epic moments based on the impression i garnered from the internet and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed. This game doesn't throw a plethora of dialogue and cutscenes at you to tell it's story. It conveys it through its gameplay and subtle hints hidden throughout the game. The story was short and open-ended yet the ending really blew my mind.

If there's one thing I have to complain about, it's the wonky controls. Although, i've grown up playing PS2 and PS3 games so they weren't much of a problem to me. IMO SoTC is a game everyone should give a try at least once. It might not be for everyone, but for me it's one the best games i've played and it will always hold a special place in my heart and memory. Music is occasional and it's hard to compare it to such great boss games like dark souls. Open world while really beautiful it's empty and lifeless. Game is really good but only at the beginning when you are fighting first colossus but further on game is just boring, frustrating and pointless. Expand

This gameplay is simply a masterpiece! To keep this short:
    Music 100/10
    World&Characters 10/10
    Controls/Gameplay 7/10
    Enjoyment 10/10

Ever since i heard shadow of The colossus was getting a remake i was overjoyed. I couldn't be happier that this remake happened. The graphics, sound, everything has been remade running on a brand new game engine entirely. But the camera and controls was the worst thing have i see in a video game.

Shadow of the Colossus proves that videogames can be art too.
I've played the og back in the day and it was one of the best experiences I've had in my life.
This games is the same thing but fixes (almost) all the problems that the original had.

A perfect remake of a near perfect game. If anyone was to ever doubt video games as an art form then this is the proof they need that it is.

This game being ported over to newer hardware unfortunately sheds light on the fact that the control scheme and camera have not aged well at all. Bluepoint Games put a lot of effort in reworking Shadow Of The Colossus, and even if you are like me and have never played the original PS2 title, the amount of passion put into this game is fantastic to see in a game. The frustrating controls made finally overcoming a colossus even more satisfying, for me at least. The soundtrack is quite frankly one of the best I've ever heard. The music can be somber and melancholic, or large and bombastic, and it adds so much to the experience. The plot is incredibly straightforward, but the mysteries and hidden treasures buried underneath it made me feel a way that not many other games have ever made me felt. It may not be quite up to quality to other games, but the legacy it made lead to bigger and better games like Breath Of The Wild, and for that reason I believe this game deserves a 9 out of 10. This remake turned out another piece of art, like the original game from PS2. Fantastic gameplay, soundtrack...A piece of great memories restored. No considerable cons found it.

    It's a monster-hunter-like game.
This game is never an RPG game.
You can't get weapons or equipment, you can't decorate your character.
Nevertheless, what is popular is that it creates a spirit of challenge that constantly challenges people.
The difficulty of this game is as difficult as dark soul or SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE.

The game definelty isn't for everyone, and some will see it as repetetive or/and boring, but the effort that went into this game is insane, especially considering its originally a ps2 game, the remake improves on few flaws the original had, but unfortunately there are still some clunky and difficult controls in the game.

Shadow of the Colossus is a masterpiece of gaming that should simply be played by everyone. Taking down stunning colossi one after the other, roaming the beautiful landscape, being overwhelmed by guilt, and seeing the tragic story unfold makes this game an absolute must play.

Stunning visuals, great story, I can see why someone would love this game in the ps2 era but the gameplay hasn't aged all that well, the controls are abysmal and the gameplay at its core requires a lot of patience. Still im overall positive about this game although it is very likely that won't be coming back to it.

An incredible game that manages to convey what he really is... a young man alone in a world where his opponents are bigger and stronger than you. The game is small, but you get so much into the game that it feels like the game is huge, and that's a very positive point.

What was all ready my favorite game just built up to look excellent. Unlike other games it doesn’t shove enemies in your face to keep you interested but rather thinks of you as a smart player which is rare now a days. The gameplay is excellent, the story is simple but excellently crafted and the only complaint would be the camera angles, which is still improved from previous versions.

The history is poor, they don't explain anything about it, the physics is weird, seems like your playing on the moon and the camera is also annoying sometimes.

Expand

My favourite game ever, the way it makes you feel the bad guy as you progress the game while actually having good intentions is paired with the awesome colossi fight.

Some people complain about the controls of Agro but it's meant to be difficult to force an actual animal to make some things. Player controls were a little clunky on PS2 but the remake is amazing.

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
