It's must have been a great game for PS2 but for PS4 it is a bit boring. But at the same time it has some mystery which doesn't allow to leave the game without beating it.
It worth to be played just because of colossuses which are great!

This game is overrated because people are sentimental and this game is 'oh so classic gem'.
It has pretty graphics of colossus and environment (not so much of characters) and in general interesting artistic direction. I must also admit that gameplay concept of climing on the colossus, finding their weak spots and stabbing till you kill them is also original and quite satisfying. But

But there is not enough to do, not enough depth. Game gets very repetitive after beating few bosses. To often I felt that game deisgn is not intuitive, and I'm doing not what my mind suggests me, but what developers intend me to do (like jumping to that high platform where colossus with sword is. Didn't know what I should do and fell to water plenty times). The gameplay doesn't really require skill even on Hard, the whole difficulty is to find a dude and find a way to kill him. And what's wrong with the camera? Why do I have to fight it all the time? It's like it has some rubber strings that pull it hard to the center all the time.

What saves the game are the colossi themselves. They are incredible creatures who each have different ways of attacking you and being defeated, and they are fun to fight. It's too bad that getting there is a chore.

Nevertheless, once you start doing battle it’s really easy to win and turns quite fun trying to defeat the colossus.

The landscapes were amazing, you can clearly see that they put a lot of effort in trying to picture a beautiful world, you can see the strong influences from the Scotland landscapes, and the Aztec and Cambodian cultures put together in order to create a world that it was just beautiful to watch.

The ending wasn’t what I was expecting but it was good, it was different. In summary, this game wasn’t for me since I didn’t get much fun from it, but maybe it’s for you.

The camera control is really bad (I guess it is as good as it was in the PS2 era) but nowadays it feels like the player lacks control over where it should be looking. The world is always covered with a thin fog, which together with graphics and textures that reveal its age, does not hide that this game belongs two console generations back. Given the limited number of characters and the big but relatively empty world, I would have expected that the team working on the remaster would have improved the game graphics, but it seems to me that they have just ported it to PS4. In summary, this games does not live to the review made by the critics, which give it a 91. A 91! Clearly, the critics have not been able to leave behind its nostalgia when writing the review. Expand

The most overrated game I've ever played. Short, empty world, no-story, boring, the worst controls of the entire generation and a camera that you're going to hate. You'll only go from point A (the temple) to point B killing colossus. That's all. Maybe the original game was a masterpiece in 2005, but this is overrated as **** And, believe me, you're gonna hate the bloody useless horse.

Having played the game back in the day, I was looking forward to this release. Sadly the game has not translated well into modern times. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I have been spoiled by more modern control schemes and gameplay loops, the the game simply does not hold up.

Obviously the one main positive is the graphics. They are absolutely stunning and Bluepoint should definitely get a ton of credit in that department. On top of that, adding in a performance mode on the PS4 Pro is something way more devs should be doing. Its nearly flawless. Kudos.

Graphics and performance aside, everything else about the game is just seriously unpleasant. Once you've killed one colossi, you've killed them all. The controls are SO horrendously floaty and bad, Idk how the game didnt get stopped in QA. I understand they wanted to keep the controls like the original but omg, the controls are so so so bad that it killed almost everything for me. you never know if youre going to grab onto a ledge or the fur, the jumping is so imprecise and you fight with the camera every single second of gameplay. Its infuriating.

Dont get me started on the Agro (The horse). Its. Awful. I hate it. Its worse than Roach in TW3 and thats saying something. Never goes where you want him to, often just juts into a random direction whenever it wants. So unpleasant to control especially considering how much time you spend riding him and its made even worse since you need him for a few of the fights,

The story is also completely forgettable. There is almost no voice acting to speak of, and there's no clear reason as to how you got to where you are. I really wish they would have redone this part with flashier cutscenes and cinemetography.

Put the awful controls and lack of ability of the story to grip me, and you've got a boring game that has flashes of brilliance and a TON of potential. If the controls were made tighter and the camera control improved, i would easily raise the review score to an 8.
The game is by no means broken, in fact its flawlessly polished. its just ruined by poor controls.

I understand this was a masterpiece for PS2, and still is a pretty fun game. But I think it's kind of simple and empty in today's standards. It's just 16 boss battles (which are pretty good) but that's it! there is nothing to do in between. And BTW the controls are horrible! possibly the worst controls I've ever seen in a game!

The premise of SotC may be interesting - but at the end, becomes a hollow, pointless technical demonstrator. As with Team Ico's "The Last Guardian"... SotC presents a potentially interesting take on the 3d puzzle/platform game, but ultimately in the same way it just becomes annoying with frustratingly bad controls, especially the temperamentally aloof Agro (I felt very agro when interacting with this horse, who seems about as intelligent as a bag of bricks); the cringey character mechanics that often end up seeing Wander lurching around as if drunk; the woeful camera that seems to have been programmed by someone suffering autism (avoiding focusing on the important things), the vacuous story (more on that); and the at once impressive open-world landscape that seems to have been for a completely different game, and at the end just becomes a vast riding simulator arena; the map and locator mechanic that often has you inadvertantly going off down a dead-end; pointless side-missions that add nothing relevant to the game; and finally the Colossi themselves - poor AI, meaningless combat dynamics where you rarely need to die if you can be bothered to just leave the arena and wait the 2-3 minutes to rejuvenate health... not to mention the completely contrived design that turns them in to basically just moving platforms. Even if the mechanics had been sorted in the PS4 re-master, the game itself is empty... a lot of people praise the minimalist story line - but essentially there is no story until you complete the game, and when you get there, it really isn't worth the wait.

Also many people are impressed with the meta-meaning of 'who is the monster'?... and we're meant to feel sorry for the Colossi... but in the end, I felt nothing for them except a hairy (angry) platform environment - they express no more sentience than an angry fart. As for the protagonist - he is essentially a moving emotionless mannequin - with no real emotion, no motivation, no real impact from all the killing he does. And if he can't be bothered caring, then neither can I.

The problem is that this is lauded as a PS classic - and perhaps on the PS2 it was truly impressive, but to modern sensibilities and expectations, this is only a so-so game at best, but elevated to a shocker given the unjustifiable love for the game (especially by critics). If you're wondering whether to buy it - and thinking it sounds pretty simple with only 16 Colossi to dispatch when some of them can be killed in 5 mins, or 1 hour (due to the poor programming and crap controls that force you to repeat so many things) - it is all over too quickly.

The only thing that gives it any length is the ridiculous riding of the horse to your next opponent... and it's not like you'll be doing anything on the journey except wondering why this was a feature of the game at all. That and the very contrived and repetitive gameplay when you get there. Got this as a PS+ freebie, and was actually going to buy it. Glad I didn't.

Incredibly disappointing game that just comes across to me as one of those technical demonstrators that was turned into a ill-conceived and poorly executed (almost) game.

Shadow of the Colossus it's a nice game, looks awsome and the soundtrack is good.
An experience to play once, just that.
I felt very amazed when I fought with the first's colossus, each one of the 16 giants are different and they have their ways to defeat them, but the pattern it's the same: You just have to search for the giants, climb them, stab them in their weak points and kill them.

I’m grateful that I didn’t spend money on this pile of trash and that it was free to download with PlayStation plus, because it is not worth anyone’s money or time. First of all, the controls are AWFUL. Adjusting the camera angle is pointless because it always snaps back to its original position. Which makes trying to do anything incredibly annoying. The mechanics and physics of the game don’t make sense. And the horse is nearly impossible to ride. All of this makes it way harder than it needs to be to kill the colossi. Each monster was so incredibly frustrating not because it wasn’t hard to beat them, but because of the infuriating controls. Each colossi was the same thing. You hop on, hold on, stab the weak spot. That’s it. The map was huge and had nothing of importance in it. Finding the colossi was so hard as the directions were way too vague. Also, I didn’t even find out the function of the sword until the third or fourth colossi (you hold it up to the sky and it points you in the direction of the next foe). There were no instructions or directions that were helpful. The only reason I finished the game was because I wanted to get the girl at the end. But after spending hours upon hours defeating SIXTEEN colossi, you don’t even get the girl !!!!! The ending is so long and so confusing, I don’t even know what was happening. The main character gets possessed and some random people show up and basically kill the main character. And then the girl wakes up. And you wanna know who gets the girl ? THE HORSE. The horse that couldn’t even walk in a straight line or do anything right gets the girl and I didn’t. This was such an infuriating ending to such an infuriating game. DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. This game is so hard. I don't have any problems with hard games, but the hardness of this game is for its ****ty mechanisms.

The inputlag in the game is SO BAD. The camera is awfull, it turns everywhere by itself. The horse is the most stupid horse in game industry, it goes into rocks and walls and sticks there and its hard to control.

The most important thing in a game is CONTROL, and a game with ****ty control is a **** game, not a masterpiece.

The game has no tutorials. You must learn in by yourself. Yeah! Ridicolous!

The story is so simple and ordinary and nothing special about it.

The music in the game at first is good but repetitive and boring after an hour. Same as the art, all locations look the same and all the bosses are like each others.

-the world is empty they could have you just kill a bunch of bosses without the need to travel there in the first place
    - annoying to use the compass (sword) to find the next boss
-the story isn’t that compelling imo
-the character takes a nap every-time he gets hit therefore when he get up again he will immediately go down again
-most boss were good to look at but tedious to fight (wasn’t fun) -jump mechanics feels sloppy -the horse is unresponsive Now I know this is a remaster/ remake but I can’t over look these issues, this makes it hard to enjoy the story overall making this I think the most overrated game out there with the praise it got.

Potentially a decent game hindered by a dodgy camera. I felt nothing during my playthrough. Padded rise and repeat. From a visual angle it has an original(ish) look. Some of the boss fights were fun. Most were frankly dull. No challenge here either. Amazed so many critics appear to think this is a PS4 classic. Nothing to see here, not for me anyway.

I had high expectations on this game and I got very frustrated. Pros: good graphics, nice soundtrack.

Cons: a lot of glitches and bugs, there is no tutorial, camera can be a real pain in the ass sometimes, controls are a bit awkward, game can be really stressful, there are no checkpoints. A test of patience.

This is by far the worst game I've played in PS4. Very nice graphics but terrible camera, controls & gameplay. I don't understand how this game is considered a PS masterpiece if it's built on frustratio rather than fun. There is no story at all until the end. This is a game I will never forget, for it's one of the worst games I have played in my life.

It’s a big boss rush essentially, with each boss being their own puzzle. Getting to some of them can be a pain, as well as figuring out how to take the colossi down. The horse you ride on being realistic is well.. annoying. Idk about you but I play games to not be IN REALITY. So any mechanics like that are always unwelcome to me. While this HD remake is conspicuously a labour of love, it lacks the transpiring astonishment that was so appealing in the original. I believe Bluepoint did a great job in bringing things back to life again and vastly upgrading the graphical quality, but they haven't quite nailed the art style of overexposure and the overall colour palette is either a hit or a miss. For instance, the rendition of the first colossus battle and the second one is a bit off the rail, for I don't get that kind of epicness in the original anymore. But the fights against Avion (the bird) and the last colossus feel right on the spot. I really wish they could have taken a closer look at the source material or perhaps a full supervision from Mr. Ueda would have made it work. Expand

This was a masterpiece in the PS2 days however and some things like camera and controls sometimes took a back seat back then. However, it's a missed opportunity not to address these issues now. They should have completely revamped the movement, controls, and camera for the new age. Still, I'm glad to have revisited the game once again as the graphical overhaul is well worth it to really enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of this game.

I really loved the PS2 original and subsequent PS3 HD remaster. I consider SOTC to be a gaming classic. At the time I really loved the art, emotionally evoking story and feel to the world. I had mixed feelings about a remake on first hearing of its release. I didn't want it to be a sacrilegious, messed around with, poorly done caricature of my beloved game.

I had mixed feelings about a remake on first hearing of its release. I didn't want it to be a sacrilegious, messed around with, poorly done caricature of my beloved game.

This game is certainly not that. It delivers a truly beautiful version, especially in 4k HDR. The game is just spectacular to look at and the game-play of the original is completely intact and unadulterated. The controls are perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned, but will probably need some getting used to for newcomers. I've tried all the new control options and they all seem to work fine to me, both old style and modern. If you've never played this game, absolutely do not let the criticism aimed at the control system put you off! Yes, they're slightly fiddly, but not at all a problem once familiarised. The incredible original soundtrack is as per the original, which certainly needs no improving. The new photo mode option is a great distraction and a welcome addition.

I don't think there is anything lacking at all in this version whatsoever, in fact it's been great playing it again and has deepened my appreciation considerably. The game plays at a relaxing pace most of the time and I find the best way to play it is to just explore and take your time enjoying the atmosphere and amazing scenery and vistas. I find it very relaxing to play and it helps me unwind. Playing it again has made me realise how unique the game is, particularly in the modern gaming climate of fast paced action/ FPS type games, driving sims etc. It's definitely not going to appeal to everyone, but if you allow yourself to be immersed in it's atmosphere and get into the pace of the game, you'll find it an experience unlike anything else. The seemingly low key story, reveals itself to be quite an epic in its later stages.

If any game could be described as having artistic merit (Personally, I think video games definitely have merit as being an art form), it would be this.

*Slight changes I have noticed, to that of the originals: Dormin when speaking, has a female voice layered over the male voice. The lighting of the game is slightly different to the originals. The bloom light effects are not as pronounced. The game does not have quite the same pastoral colour pallette. None of this bothers me, the above were probably due to technical restrictions of the original hardware. I love the new look of the game entirely!

As you ride into this quest, you immediately see a video game from 2018. On a PlayStation 4 Pro, you can play with a silky frame rate that complements the wind rushing through valleys covered in tall grass and the viney hair of the humongous beasts. Or you can opt for a lower frame rate, with a resolution suitable for a new 4K HDR TV

I couldn't play the original on PS2 as the camera was infuriatingly impossible to control but glad I revisited this game the developer Bluepoint has refined and polished it to a fine tee. Closest you're likely to get to Zelda-esque title on PS4, so satisfying to take down this huge scale Colossi and the musical score to accompany it is just breathtaking at times.

    A true masterpiece.

One thing that ruins 90% of game are the controls and camera. They are absolutely the worst I have ever seen in any 3rd person game. Where ever you would like to look, apparently the game kwos better than you. Racing on your horse at full gallop and the camera drops to the ground where you can't see any obstacles in front of you. Weird. I enjoy standing completely still and moving the camera a tad and watch the game quickly switch the view to some neutral position that doesn't make sense. Watch any video on any YouTube gameplay and watch the the fans gushing about the game still struggle will it. In fact many often comment on the several downsides of this game and yet still call it one their favorites, if not THE favorite of all time. I don't get how such a major drawback still can be overlooked even after 2 remasters. It's practically criminal.
It's not just the camera controls, the hero and horse controls are terrible too. Watch players on a YouTube video fight the controls while trying to cross the narrow land bridges. It's a good thing your horse won't run off the edge because that would be game breaking. It's because your horse kind of has a mind of its own and will run his own path if you let him and don't fight it. But if you like to think you have control, that's where you'll mess up. What makes matters worse is that there are Colossi that need the horse for combat. Even just controlling your elfish hero that prances across the prairies like a ballerina is not that intuitive. People would put up with bad controls like this a couple decades ago but now this can't be forgiven.
I didn't really know much about this game and what I was getting into but after defeating the first 4 bosses I realized that that is all this game is. Defeating large tedious bosses. There is nothing else to fight or do that really matters. I've learned from watching walkthroughs that there are items and shrines to find out in the world. I don't know where they are because the world is pretty huge but barren. The gamer I watched even said that he wouldn't bother getting them until AFTER he defeated the Colossi. What is the point then?
The game is really MAYBE a couple hours of actual interesting gameplay surrounded by things out of your control that just slow you down or make you start over. Long travels times to boss locations that will be redone if you die. Fall in water? Expect a very slow swim back to land. Prepare to wait for each Colossus to perform the action needed so you can begin your ascent to his sweet spot. If you miss it, prepare to wait again. Need your hero to rest on a safe spot during your climb? Get ready for him to flop all over the place like a rag doll from the slightest movement. I also wonder what percentage of SotC players have used videos and wikis to defeat a Colossus because many times things are unclear. I rarely ever go online for hints but I did more on this game than in most other games played in my lifetime put together. The hints the game gives you are vague and sometimes misleading. In one, the voice tells you to knock off the beasts armor to defeat him but in actuality he knocks his own armor off by striking a metal plate instead of soft ground. Something the game expected me to figure out at random, I guess.
And the one thing that shocked me the most is the Colossus battles get tedious very quickly. There is no tension because even a direct strike by a colossus might do less than 25% damage which quickly automatically rejuvenates. You can fall from some of the tallest places and still not even take 50% damage. I guess that's good because you would just be restarting from the main temple or last shrine each time but it also means there are little to no stakes involved.
This game isn't a test of skill really but a test of frustration. If you are the type that doesn't get easily frustrated by challenges then this is the game for you. I'm not that type of person.

What could've been one of my most memorable gaming experiences turned out to be one of the most disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I still thought Shadow of the Colossus was a good game, but I did not understand where the game's status as a "masterpiece" came from.

As far as the positives with this game go, the game looks absolutely stunning, and is one of the most visually appealing games ever released. Also, the attention to detail within the world's landscapes is amazing, and it really makes the whole world feel alive. Finally, I really liked how the game took a non-traditional method to storytelling, and rather than relying on constant dialogue and cut scenes, the game tells its story through the actions of the player.

Even though there are a lot of positives about this game, there are quite a few negatives that I simply cannot ever look past. First of all, the gameplay and controls both feel very clunky and unresponsive. This may have felt just fine in 2005, but in 2018, when we have games with advanced physics engines and tighter controls, this game's controls stick out like a sore thumb. Also, I found very few of the colossi to be genuinely fun and entertaining to take down, those being Avion, Phalanx, and Dirge, while the rest either felt decent at best or insanely frustrating at worst (Celosia). But quite possibly the worst of all, this game has very little replay value. What I mean by that is, once you've beaten the game once, there is no reason to back and play the game a second time, as it will be the exact same thing. So unless you really enjoyed playing through the game, I can't recommend you play through the game more than once, and I don't ever see myself playing through this game again.

In conclusion, Shadow of the Colossus is certainly a good game and one I recommend everyone tries out once throughout their life. But even so, the game is incredibly flawed and far from a masterpiece, at least in my opinion.

    A masterpiece beautifully remade !
I would like to give it a 10 but the camera still needs work and Wander's face lacks the personality of the PS2 version in my opinion.
Out of that, Bluepoint's work on the environments and the creatures is outstanding and faithful to the original.

The story is extremely vague up until the very end. But even those things aren't what really make Shadow great, it's experiencing each one of these colossi without any clue how to bring them down. They are truly some of the greatest things to ever be put in a game. My only gripe would be the controls. I understand the excuse as to why they would be difficult to use, but it's still a pain in the neck. Expand

Awe-inspiring. Shadow of the colossus offers a gripping and captivating experience with it's mountain-like scale colossi and fantastic level/creature design you will almost certainly be gripped in every battle in this game. I'd personally not played the original on the PS2 or the HD version for the PS3 however finally getting to play this game I realise what all the fuss was about. The level of intricate programming that must have gone into this cannot be overstated, a lot of passion was put into making this game and it surely shows. The sound in the game was fantastic every detail from simply galloping along on your horse to the roars of the colossus was perfectly implemented and had a very real feel to it, allowing the full immersion of you and the game.

The graphics. I've never been so satisfied with water, which is a big thing to me, and considering this is a remaster too astonishes me. The colossus have very real features with no flare or un-textured spots on them, such as hair that moves along with the direction you are moving in, and intricate engravings on the parts that you cant even climb on. Love was put into this game and cannot stress enough, if you love great graphics in a game, this is another reason you should check this one out.

Moreover the gameplay, is mostly amazing, it almost always works and climbing your first colossus is an experience I'll never forget. However, with some of the colossi after even just the first one I started experiencing some difficulties with the camera, and the actual movement on the colossus. Such as when I was climbing the second one I would get stuck on strange places, lose stamina and fall off for no reason, which was frustrating. Furthermore the camera quite a few times was very frustrating as it moved on its own. Even when just riding your horse it would sometimes feel very ridged and robotic and you tried to manoeuvre your way through tight spaces, but couldn't see anything just because of the camera. Although sometimes frustrating I found these things didn't happen too often, and it is a remaster from the ground up. This is the only reason I didn't give it a 9 or a 10.

The story I found was more of something there to keep you going, it wasn't too necessary to a game like this but more added reason behind what you are doing. It had a very big plot twist I didn't expect but loved and I felt it was satisfactory to what it set out to do. It's not a huge story but it's still there and very prominent in moments.

Overall shadow of the colossus was an extremely rare experience in gaming and one you will surely remember, with excellent sound work, stunning visuals and excellent gameplay shadow of the colossus will go down as one of my all time favourites, a must have for all types of gamers.

You play as a man tasked with reviving a girl somehow special to you, and are ordered to traverse a vast land and slaughter sixteen gigantic beasts called Colossi. By your side you have your noble horse, named Agro, and you’re equipped with a sword and bow and arrow to aid you in your fight. The graphics on the PS4 are a nice improvement, but unfortunately, the controls don’t match up. Agro steers terribly and will absolutely not cooperate with you in forests. Also, while in a battle with a Colossi, she will refuse to come to you when you call her, forcing you to chase her down and mount her yourself. However, she is a nice companion and good at getting places faster. She will be useful in battles with Colossi, where she can evade attacks such as fireballs with a speed quicker than the human player owns. I have to give the game credit for creating unique designs for each of sixteen Colossi. The game also gives you the option to switch your controls around (for example: “classic” controls can be switched to the remake’s controls, or can be kept as classic for those who are familiar with the 2005 controls). With each Colossi, a unique challenge is presented, and although the end goal is always the same, getting to the magic sigils on the Colossi is different every time. It’s getting to the sigils and effectively taking them out that is the most exciting during the battles. After a long, hard fight with a raging Colossi, the final stab and freezeframe is a great reward for your troubles. Expand

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
