It has it's moments, some nice visuals and a unique atmosphere, but it has very little of content and gameplay. Controls and camera are extremly annoying. More then 50% of the game, right from the start, I kept asking myself over and over, why play this any further, it has hardly anything to offer.

This game feels like they salvaged what they could out of a fatally drained budget and sold it like having so little content was the plan all along.

With the last bosses it did get more interesting, picked up a bit of suspense and finally the ending did make up for a lot of narrative that was missing most of the game. It is an experience, but as a game, it's over after 6-8 hours, and that only because you have to repeatedly travel over long and empty distances and if you go hunting a few useless lizards and fruits in a partially good looking, but mostly very bland looking environment.

You can get probably get a bit more challengeing things to do and some new equipment in New Game+, but why would you really want to...?

There is a very minor connection to The Last Guardian (basically in the setting, the climbing, and the general feel), but that is a very different "story" in quite a few aspects.

This game is good. Just a couple gripes with this one. I got really bored when I would try to find each Colossus. but once you get to there the game becomes fun. All of the bosses where a good challenge. only a couple frustrated me. (The Turtle (9) and the Warrior (3)). The ending was also really weird. other than that, I recomend that you try it

The character is SO HARD TO CONTROL it takes all the fun out of this game. You waste so much time not because of your skill but because of how they made the character move and climb and hold on surfaces. It's such a shame because the rest is nice but if you can't control the character you're playing, it's not worth it

I don’t understand why people say this is a masterpiece. Nevertheless, once you start doing battle it’s really easy to win and turns quite fun trying to defeat the colossus.

The landscapes were amazing, you can clearly see that they put a lot of effort in trying to picture a beautiful world, you can see the strong influences from the Scotland landscapes, and the Aztec and Cambodian cultures put together in order to create a world that it was just beautiful to watch.

The ending wasn’t what I was expecting but it was good, it was different. In summary, this game wasn’t for me since I didn’t get much fun from it, but maybe it’s for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An absolutely great remake. Visually gorgeous, it retains the spirit of the original.

Shadow of the Colossus tells us the story of Wander, one man ready to risk everything in order to save Mono, whose fate is told to be cursed and who had been sacrificed because of it. Wander travelled to forbidden lands with his horse Agro, where lives a godlike entity, Dormin, able to revive dead people, in exchange of one service. Destroying 16 idols, each of them corresponding to one colossus. As a player, you have to defeat them all.

To do so, you have to find them first, in these open yet empty lands. As a gps, you have your sword, who reflects light towards the next colossus. Once there, you'll have to think on how to climb on them, and stab them to death in their weak spots. Colossi are not bosses, but levels, puzzles, that you'll have to solve in order to vanquish them. The plot is very simple, it is a remaster of "the hero going to save the princess from the dragon", but it is told very efficiently, with a simplistic yet strong narration, and a few more subtleties. Each colossus death feels like a murder, the death of something greater than you, who fell because of an egoist desire. One frag brings more sorrow than joy. The game ends with an masterpiece of a final scene, which deserves to be played / seen once.

The soundtrack was one of the best ever made in a video game, and still is in 2020. Grandiose, in perfect harmony with the epicness of the fights. A classic.

Like each of Fumito Ueda's games, it plays oddly, like almost nothing else. Wander is weak, vulnerable and has little balance when on colossi, Agro might be tricky to control, as you're not controlling directly the horse, but the rider controlling the horse. Gameplay choices, made to make you have a more complex feel of what you're doing, instead of creating fun and accessibility.

Probably not everyone cup of tea, but one very beautiful example of video game as art. If you're ready to put aside nowadays codes to play an old game who was bizarre even 15 years ago, go for it, it will most likely worth it. A great experience.

Camera do suck tho. But I never find it that constraining as some can say, whether it was in the original or in this one.

Yet here, it's this horrifying, dreadful task. Your own self interests lead you to slay these innocent beasts, most of which don't attack you on their own will. After defeating one, the game gives you a breather, almost to force you to reflect on the egregious action you just committed. What a game. I must say, I wasn't expecting a lot of this game, and I got my money worth. My only complaint would be the horse's controls, they were awful. Otherwise, the gameplay was great, graphics were amazing, story was simple but very touching. Each boss battle was masterfully created and the puzzles were fair enough. Loved the ending. Overall, a little short but worth every penny. Solid 9/10

This is by far the worst game I've played in PS4. Very nice graphics but terrible camera, controls & gameplay. I don't understand how this game is considered a PS masterpiece if it's built on frustratio rather than fun. There is no story at all until the end. This is a game I will never forget, for it's one of the worst games I have played in my life.

When Shadow of the Colossus first released on the PS2 in 2005, it was unlike anything people have played before. A sprawling, open world where your only objective is to defeat 16 mythical Colossi that roam the land for your own personal gain. It was lauded for its technical prowess, the bosses themselves, and served as a prime case of video games being seen as a form of art. The game had its fair share of issues, and it certainly wasn’t for everyone, but it’s just so wholly unique in its presentation and design that you can’t help but at least admire it. 13 years later, a ground-up remake of the game was released for the PS4, and for my money it is the definitive version of this classic.

Of course, the most obvious improvements are found in the game’s presentation. The game looks positively gorgeous. Each environment in the game is pain-stakingly recreated with modern textures and graphics, and the Colossi look even better than before (and they already looked great on the PS2). It all helps to fully bring out the best of the original’s stellar art design. The main character Wander does look a tad off though, mostly in his face. The game also runs considerably smoother than originally, as the PS2 release was really pushing the hardware to its limits, and you have the option to sacrifice some visual fidelity for increased framerate. The orchestral soundtrack has always been one of the best parts of the original and remains pretty much untouched. Music isn’t always present though, as it only appears when it absolutely needs to. It can range from being haunting and beautiful to bold and grand, perfectly suiting each moment.

The core gameplay remains the same as the original, but with some much needed tweaks. As mentioned, your goal is to kill each of the 16 colossi in this forbidden land in order to bring back the one you love. With the help of a mysterious voice, your sword and bow, and your trusty steed Agro, you set off to do just that. Aside from killing a few lizards and eating some fruit in the over world to increase your health and grip, killing the colossi are the only thing you’ll be doing in this game. You’ll be using Agro to travel around from one point to another, and using your sword to help you navigate. This is one of the reasons why a game like this would be a hard sell to your average player. You can easily view this as being barren and dull, but given the core themes of the game and the context of the type of land you have trespassed on, adding other people or things to do would be a detriment. The world itself is artistically beautiful, and it instinctively makes me want to explore and soak in my surroundings.

Now let’s talk about the colossi themselves, as they are the real meat of the game. While some are considerably smaller than the others, most live up to their name exceptionally. These are not mere sword fodder for you to mindlessly slash at. Each colossi has a puzzle element to them, having weak points on different parts of their body, and half of the challenge comes from simply figuring out how to get on them and finding their weakness. If you take too long, though, the mysterious voice does offer hints. Once you do, it’s a literal struggle to hang on to them for dear life while they attempt to fling you off. Each colossi has a creative method of getting on them, and once you do and that glorious music kicks in it is absolutely thrilling. It does help that the controls in this version have improved a bit since the original, namely its control scheme. The original options are there for those who prefer it, but the revamped scheme feels so much more natural. Wander is easily prone to tripping and falling, though, so you’ll need to take that into account. Your horse Agro behaves rather realistically, and when traveling through narrow passages she usually does a good job of navigating through them automatically. The game also features a photo mode because every major Sony release needs to include one, so if you are interested in that it offers a good amount of features.

Shadow of the Colossus was an incredible achievement on the PS2, and its staying power and legacy continue with the PS4 remake. If you have ever been curious about this game, or are just looking for something different, this version comes highly recommended.

Could there be more variety to the gameplay? Sure. But this game is unapologetic on what it is, and that's sort of the reason why it's so special.

    pros

    - evoke a sense of wonder.
    - boss fights are fun at time.
    - very atmoshpheric.

    - The Camera is a huge issue for me, and im not one to ever complain about cameras in video games unless its really messed up. like in shadow of the colossus. it prevented me from having fun for a majority of my play through

Expand

However, any redeeming qualities of this game are offset by the most atrocious and poor control scheme I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing in a game. Quite simply, this game is not fun whatsoever. The horse navigation makes no reasonable sense. Accelerating and decelerating the horse takes several seconds, and turning is either too slow or too fast. The bulk of colossus battles are climbing up onto them to find their weak points. But this becomes an absolute chore because of the absolute poor control scheme and it's similarly atrocious camera. Often times I would fall off if I let go of R2 for even a split second and would then have to climb my way up again. What should be a fun battle against a giant majestic beast quickly devolves into an uninspiring repetitive task. I tried to like this game, I really did. But it's just not fun. 4/10. Expand

Only negatives I had with the game were the camera and the lack of story in between every colossal defeat. I question wether the camera was made with the intent for the player to have to fight it as an extra challenge or it was an artistic choice. Either way, I felt it was an unnecessary headache to deal with that would of been better if we had a choice with a different camera, one less combative.

The original game has been in my "to play" list for a long time, but I'm glad I waited and experienced the PS4 version instead. I feel jealous for Shadow of the Colossus fans, because this version is basically a dream come true as far as remakes go. The game looks absolutely stunning, even rivaling the PS4's own titles. Some people could argue that they should have implemtented more quality of life improvements, or even additional content, but honestly, this is exactly how a remake should be in my opinion: faithful as possible to the original work, but making it look better than ever.

Shadow of the Colossus is a game with a very simple but compelling premise: hunt down sixteen gigantic monsters that act as bosses spread all over the world. Boss fights are one of my favorite aspects in any video game, so naturally I was inmediately captivated by this premise. At first I had some trouble getting used to the controls and phyisics, but eventually got better at it. The controlls are clunky, but this is part of what makes the game challenging. Of course, that also means that you'll be set for some frustrating moments, especially during the first few hours. This is a game that often demands patience from the player, so I can see it being difficult to enjoy for some people. It is clearly not a game for the mainstream public.

But no matter how many frustrating moments you'll experience with the controlls, the game will keep you coming back for the epic and spectacular moments that take place fighting each of the colossi. Being a game designed entirely around boss fights, you can expect the fights to be more elaborate and time-consuming than your average video game bosses. Each colossi is like a puzzle, where you have to find the way to their weak points, and then execute your attacks while managing your stamina. Overall, the bosses are creative, varied, and for the most part entertaining from a gameplay standpoint. From an artistic standpoint, some of the battles are simply breathtaking. In this sense, Shadow of the Colossus is unrivaled in the gaming landscape. Of course, not all of the colossi are on the same level of quality. But overall the fights are very memorable and satisfying.

There isn't much to this game apart from the boss fights. The rest of the experience consists of traveling the vast, (intentionally) empty open world in search for the colossi. There are some collectibles and a much appreciated time-attack mode that let's you replay any fight, but I didn't really bother with any of those. And finally, the game has a story, which is very minimalistic and in reality, it only exists in the beginning and the end. The finale is extremely memorable.

The art direction for this game is very solid and well done. The landscapes are beautiful, and the colossi look spectacular, especially in this 1080p remake. The music is sensational, consisting mostly of orchestral pieces, with a few exceptions. Though I often find orchestral music in games like this to be very samey and forgettable, this is not the case for Shadow of the Colossus. All of the songs are very memorable, and the composer was clearly a very talented person.

In the end, this is a game that anyone who likes epic boss fights should play at least once. Again, it is not your typical adventure game and I would not recommend it to the general public. But I have to commend the developers for commiting to such a novel and bold idea, because the result is a game that despite its shortcomings, will always be rememberd by everyone.

I tried hard on this one, but the camera was just infuriating! I defeated the first time and then gave up, climbing walls looking for monsters and the ever nauseating camera made my head hurt! Just my opinion though, if so many people liked it maybe it is great, but didn’t work for me!

Although nice to look at at first, the photogrammetry used in place of the original hand made assets really take away some of the atmosphere present in the PS2 and PS3 version. The environments become samey very quickly and don't have that sense of world to them. The frame rate on the standard PS4 leaves a lot to be desired and its as if you're playing with an incredible amount of input lag. I do remember it being somewhat hard to control originally and having a low framerate on the PS2 but perhaps these problems were worse than I remembered. That said controlling the game is NOT an enjoyable experience in any way shape or form and in my honest opinion these are problems that should have been fixed or revised for a brand new release. I think the controls are not acceptable and that's that. Some have said that they are intentional and that is were the challenge lies but I think these are controls that could have been improved by leaps and bounds. Seeing the Last Guardian has exactly the same problems I'm more inclined to think it doesn't matter that much to the developers or they are simply incompetent in that aspect. But saying it is an gameplay design decision to have clunky controls doesn't hold up to me. I honestly think the controls of the original PS2 games were not this bad but I could be wrong. Having enjoyed the original game and actually being enthralled with it and played many many hours of it, coming back to it in this remaster doesn't evoke the same feeling I originally had. Expand

A new graphic is not enough to turn an old game into a new one.
I never played a game tedious as this one.
The graphic is good but everything else is awful.

The main force of this game is its artistic direction. The world is very unique. The design of the colossi is impressively good as well. Expectably, the colossi are the best part of this game. Still about artistic direction, the music is nice and perfectly matches the world.

Storywise, it’s simple and light. Don’t expect to find an extremely developed scriptwriting, but some mysteries are good enough to make the player wanting a few answers.

That’s all for what I liked about SOTC. There are also many things I didn’t like. First, let me start with the absolute worst thing in this game: the horse handling. It is HORRIBLY TERRIBLE. I don’t care that it’s originally a PS2 game. If you remaster/remake it (2 times), you correct the obvious bad stuff. It’s not acceptable to « remake » a game and to offer your players such a disastrous experience when it comes to the handling of the horse. Moreover, the frame rate is bad. It’s too slow and I cannot believe that they cannot make such an old game a 60fps on PS4. That’s another very negative point. On top of that, there are lots of camera problems and I’ve found myself stuck several times because of bugs or gameplay imperfections. Disappointing for such a light-content game.

More subjectively, I found the game slow to begin. I also don’t like this fictional language thing. Globally, I got tired after a while so I forced myself to finish the last third. Nevertheless, it’s worth playing for its uniqueness and because I have rarely seen such advanced boss fighting (if you can call them like that).

Then the actual 1st & 2nd boss fights ( which were a bit cool i must admit - hence the 1 rating) - on the second boss after about 30 minutes trying to figure out the direction , I could not bear the controls climbing that boss . I quit the game right there. Luckily for me i got this as a freebie on psn ( although we all know nothing is for free) . But hugely dissapointed & cannot see how the ratings lead this to being a “ must play” , more like “ must avoid” Expand

Very good game, beautiful graphics, incredible bosses, epic battles, but it has many collectibles and not very good gameplay, besides occasional bugs. A human-style work of art.

A fantastic remake of a timeless classic. However the controls and handling were a lot to deal with, messing up some of my boss fights from time to time. A definite must-play but also be warned that the mechanics are VERY outdated and hard to get used to after playing streamlined newer games.

One of the most beautiful games available on the PS4, SoTC competes toe to toe with major AAA titles like Uncharted 4 and Horizon in terms of art direction. The journey to each colossus through desolate lands was also pretty relaxing for me. Call me a weirdo but casually running through beautiful meadows under the sun searching through various ruins to find a colossus was a really great experience for me.

The USP of the game though, has to be its music. The loud, triumphant tunes that play when you're trying to cling on desperately to a colossus, or the sad, almost mocking tune whenever you kill them, it all adds to the atmosphere.

Not having played the previous iterations on the PS2 and PS3, this remake was my first introduction to this game. I went in expecting a heartfelt story and some truly epic moments based on the impression i garnered from the internet and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed. This game doesn't throw a plethora of dialogue and cutscenes at you to tell it's story. It conveys it through its gameplay and subtle hints hidden throughout the game. The story was short and open-ended yet the ending really blew my mind.

If there's one thing I have to complain about, it's the wonky controls. Although, i've grown up playing PS2 and PS3 games so they weren't much of a problem to me. IMO SoTC is a game everyone should give a try at least once. It might not be for everyone, but for me it's one the best games i've played and it will always hold a special place in my heart and memory. Sometimes it's nice to just appreciate the smaller things in life :)

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
