This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Shadow of the Colossus game is a huge success from the PlayStation 2, the game got an HD version of the PlayStation 3 console, which did not make a significant change to the graphics but let new players be out of the game. And in 2018 we got a remake of a game created by Bluepoint games (the company that developed the collection of Uncharted games) so let's start with a review of the game Shadow of the colossus:

Plot - The plot in the game is simply excellent. Without making you spoilers I will just say that the plot of the game will arouse in you many emotions from designer to anger.
    Final score - 10/10 - Just a crazy plot.

Gameplay - The gameplay in a simple game is very excellent and creative, the game consists only of bosses but the bosses are like a puzzle that after you kill them you will feel a sense of satisfaction. The bosses in the game are not puzzles, they will also challenge your archery links and your tolerance.
Final score 10/10 - Simple gameplay is excellent.

Graphics - The graphics in the game are simply breathtaking even today in 2021. Bluepoint did a great job here with the graphics that make this game look like a game released today and not like a game released for the PlayStation 2.
Final score - 10/10 - Simply amazing graphics

To sum up the remake of Shadow of the colossus is a simply amazing remake, it's one of the best remakes I know, it's also one of the best games I've played in my life.
Final score - 10/10 - A simply amazing game, anyone who has a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 must get a copy of this game.

Bluepoint Games put a lot of effort in reworking Shadow Of The Colossus, and even if you are like me and have never played the original PS2 title, the amount of passion put into this game is fantastic to see in a game. The frustrating controls made finally overcoming a colossus even more satisfying, for me at least. The soundtrack is quite frankly one of the best I've ever heard. The music can be somber and melancholic, or large and bombastic, and it adds so much to the experience. The plot is incredibly straightforward, but the mysteries and hidden treasures buried underneath it made me feel a way that not many other games have ever made me felt. It may not be quite up to quality to other games, but the legacy it made lead to bigger and better games like Breath Of The Wild, and for that reason I believe this game deserves a 9 out of 10. The reason this isn't a 10/10 from which you'll be able to tell from the other reviews is the controls are annoying at times. Not so in important situation but when on the horse travelling. It's like the horse is made of jelly and you're trying to control it with a Wii remote which is basically me saying, it's annoyingly frustrating at times.

The original fun factor from the PS2 game does carry through onto this PS4 edition and if you've not visited this game in some years like I did, for a low price I'd definitely recommend getting this, even just for the graphics (Which aren't next gen quality but an improvement nonetheless.)

In Shadow of the Controls, you fight the programmers' poor coding for control of the most pathetic protagonist and the game engine's ungodly physics that takes platforming to an unprecedented un-realism. If you are like me and had no idea what the game was about and was drawn to the cool design and concept of the game, please stop right there and stay far away from this game. Terrible controls and mechanics are the hardest to explain in words, but this game, without a doubt, has the worst control of any game I've ever played.

The game's biggest strength is immersion, which BluePoint has certainly done an absolute brilliant job in capturing the desolate yet beautiful world of SOTC. The music is grand and epic when battling the colossi, and the sense of scale given to the player makes one really experiences the vast unit the enemies truly are compared to what puny power the character possess in order to overcome these extreme behemoth of monsters. All of these makes the game well deserve to be the PlayStation classic is it until you find that the horse AI is programmed by a monkey, your character starts randomly floats in the opposite direction of your analog stick, grabs edges that you never intent to reach, starts falling off the edge every three seconds, takes over ten seconds to get up from a knockdown, or the camera always just snaps to whichever is the most inconvenient angle for the moment. These things instantly pulls the player out of the immersion and makes one realize that the game is nothing more than a poorly aged PS2 game that uses outdated controls as its core gameplay.

The game's shallow mechanics is stretched by constant downtime and cryptic puzzle solving, with often terrible RNG in the AI's pattern that further extends the frustration and time wasting, making a supposedly one hour game into a six hour mind-numbing journey that by the end, one would wish that it could end sooner.

When a game's difficulty stems not from player's skills and knowledge but the gameplay design and fundamental controls, you might as well go watch a movie instead because at least you don't have to deal with poorly thought out mechanics and infuriating engine physics.

But then again, this is not by any means a 90+ game, mainly because of one single fact that's like an elephant in the room that nobody talks about...

And it's not the soulless main character that looks like the singer from a k-pop band, neither is the excellent musical score, nor the gorgeous -although empty- lands you traverse, nor is the short length of the game (clocking at about 8 hours in my first ever playthrough)... no. It's the goddamned controls.

I can't recall in my 30+ years as a gamer such awful, infuriating and bland controls - both when just fighting or platforming but also while on the horse. It's just a nightmare. It basically breaks & ruins the experience. I think 30% of my runtime was unwillingly falling off cliffs, bumping into walls & rocks, etc. It's infuriating, awful & frustrating - and totally disruptive of an otherwise sweet experience.

I totally wanted to finally play this game after so many years, so I did. It has its enjoyable moments, and certainly has something to offer... but beware: you'll be screaming & cursing at your screen like you're watching the World Cup final.

However, when it comes to the gameplay it remains simple and it serves well the idea of playing with a weak character in the face of its challenges, as the controversial camera continues to have a lot of difficulty in showing the combat against colossal beings without being impossible to understand what is happening sometimes.

Going straight to the point, there weren't any major mechanical advances in this new version of the game however if you're a fan of the original it won't matter, as what makes Shadow of the colossus unique is its incredible narrative that guides you through its contemplative scenarios and memorable songs in unique combats where the combination of these elements makes each event unique.

If you are an old fan of the franchise this game is mandatory, however if this is your first experience, I recommend caution do not expect a big open world with thousands of side quests or something like that, but a remarkable narrative experience where not everything will be played in your face in cutscene.

Also, some other things to know before reading on:
    - I've never played the original. I have no nostalgic feelings or memories about the game. Prior to playing it, I've only heard the greatest of things about it.
    - If you like the game, that's awesome. This is not meant as an attack towards people who enjoy the game. As long as games draw people in, I'm happy. No matter if I myself don't enjoy something. There are simply some aspects that ruined the experience for me

So let's begin with my thoughts on the game.

    The Good:

    - Graphics. Obviously. I'm not sure if I've ever played a game that looked better. Maybe Red Dead Redemption 2. SotC is definitely a very pretty game.

    - Music. I wouldn't call the score a masterpiece, but it's somewhere between "very good" and "awesome" for me. I'll definitely listen to it some more in my own time.

    The Meh:

    - Story. Many people praise it to heights not achievable by anything else it seems. But to me, the (very, very small) bits of story did not really hit the mark. It's certainly not bad, but considering the bias I got by listening to other opinions, I was quite disappointed. There is a (kinda) clever twist, but I felt like it was too little too late to move me. The whole premise also isn't that great over all. There is MUCH better stuff out there that doesn't get nearly as much attention or praise. I can still see why people like it, though

    The Bad:

    - Controls. I'm NOT talking about the control-scheme (or button-mapping). This is about how using the controller translates to what's happening on screen. I get that the protagonist is supposed to be very young and inexperienced, but from a gameplay-perspective unresponsiveness and clunk (at least to that extent) are not justified by that.

    - Horse riding. Pretty much the worst riding controls I've ever come across. Tank controls in general are great (again, not about button-mapping) but the horse simply doesn't react to half my inputs. It slows down when I want to accelerate. It randomly takes a 90°-turn in an open field without me even touching the controller. It's unable to go faster than 2 km/h in forests (except in the very center of the "road"). Walking was often faster. In a game that is literally 50% riding, this can become a deal-breaker very quickly. Sure, a horse can have its own will, but this completely destroys any emotional connection with the horse I could have otherwise built.

    - Camera. Straight up the worst in the biz. Never have I experienced an ingame-camera even half that stubborn. Hell, most N64 games probably do better. The camera always tries to move to a "cinematic" point of view. That's generally not bad. Riding across a huge meadow can look stunning; having it zoom out while climbing a colossus breathtaking. But 99% of the time, it's just annoying. Even when trying to adjust it manually, the camera fights you. It always pans to a more impractical position. It doesn't help that the direction of climbing (on fur, for example) depends on how the camera is positioned. If it's turning all the time - which it often does when mounting a colossus, without the player getting much control over it - the left stick will have to be yanked in different directions countless times, just to move in ONE direction.
I could rant on, but I think the point came across.

Overall the experience could be described as this: I was not fighting the Colossi. I was killing them, but only through fighting the controls and the camera. I simply don't see that as justified for a modern game. Even a remaster such as this should have adjustments. Maybe even a toggle to switch between old and new controls/camera?

Finally, if the problems were the same in the original, I see how people call this a great remaster (I guess). So if you've loved the original despite the controls, by all means play this remaster. It's just that in this day and age, there is no way I can recommend it on its own.

It’s a big boss rush essentially, with each boss being their own puzzle. Getting to some of them can be a pain, as well as figuring out how to take the colossi down. The horse you ride on being realistic is well.. annoying. Idk about you but I play games to not be IN REALITY. So any mechanics like that are always unwelcome to me. Those are a few gripes I had, but overall the frustration doesn’t outweigh the enjoyment I had trekking across this mysterious land to get to the next colossi. The game is nothing less than a cornerstone of gaming exploration and atmospheric storytelling, but for some unfathomable reason, Bluepoint (which is usually... on point) missed the chance to consolidate it as an absolute masterpiece on current-gen by not modernising enough camera and controls. What a shame.

Honestly don't know why the critics' consensus is 91/100. This game has the worst control of any game I've ever played and it's just a series of boss fight after boss fight.

My complaint with this remaster is its controls, as if they just left the clunky controls from the original game. The game's certainly not for everyone but it can be enjoyed as a work of art. And as a example of perfection of soundtrack and art direction in video games.

Personally I love the game and can look past some of the annoying things about it. But there are certainly some minor things that for some can kill their enjoyment of the game the biggest thing being the controls. I wouldn't say there bad but they do feel old which makes sense seeing as the game was originally on the PS2. The controls take some time to get use to but again I wouldn't call them bad except maybe the horse which was annoying to control the whole way through. What the game gets right is pretty much everything else though. The visuals on the PS4 are just breath taking when you first experience them. And the boss fights are mostly pretty good. It's like trying to solve a puzzle while also fighting a boss and I love that. Most of the Colossus are great other then maybe 2 of them who were fairly similar to each other. And the finale colossus was a little disappointing if I'm being honest. Along with all that the music is top notch and the story is interesting but also goes on the backburner for most of the game. Most of the plot happens at the beginning and the end of the game with little happening in between you slaying colossus. Which works for what the game is and also helps with the twist that happens by the end. In conclusion Shadow of the Colossus is certainly a unique game and I think that it's a game you should at least try to play once so long as you can deal with some weird controls. Expand

Eso si, tiene cada batalla con cada coloso vale la pena ya que debemos encarar la situacion de diferentes maneras para derrotarlos a cada uno. Pero como dije antes, no tiene mucho mas. This is the worst game I have ever play, really. The camera and controls suck so much. Colossus are good, but you don't fight with them, you fight with camera all time. Don't waste your money on this game, it's better to buy cigarets even if you don't smoke. It will be more healthy for you.

The camera angles and swing work against you. The game relies heavily on parkour-like mechanics but the camera is always swinging in the wrong places so you end up falling off stuff unintentionally and wasting time re-climbing.
The parkour sucks. Sometimes the character climbs as expected, other times, they get confused and just go up and down with no progress which just drains your stamina unfairly..
The game relies on you basically killing a bunch of colossus creatures that have weak spots but they don't consistently show them to you making for stabbing-guesses and long arduous battles. Bug?

I have no clue why this has such a high metacritic rating honestly. It's not the worst game in the world, but certainly not worthy of a 93 rating.

And the physics aspect of the game makes climbing the colossi very wonky and frankly more unrealistic. But i will still give this piece of art a 10/10. Would give it 100/10 if i could.

The objective is to defeat 16 Colossi, ranging from bull-sized to titans standing 30 meters (100 feet) high, or giant creatures 200 meters (650 feet) long. There is an open map which you have to explore, with your magical sword guiding you to each Colossus after 5-10 minutes of traversal, but in-between there are no enemies of any kind. Each Colossus is a platforming puzzle you have to solve, with most Colossi featuring literal platforms on their body, and you defeat them by stabbing their weak points.

Bluepoint Games took the original game and remade all the graphics from the ground up. You can play the game at 1080p and 30 fps on the base PS4, but on PS4 Pro you can choose between 1080p and 60 fps or 1440p and 30 fps. The gameplay and AI behavior have been left untouched from the original, for better or for worse. Shadow of the Colossus can be beaten in ~6 hours, and even less than that if you already know what to do.

Shadow of the Colossus and its predecessor Ico paved the way for the rise of many artistic games with a minimalist narrative, left open to interpretation by the players. But unfortunately Bluepoint Games chose to ignore Ico altogether and didn't remake that one, too. Which is a shame because it's my favorite of the two. Still, I recommend anyone to play Shadow of the Colossus.

After finding out what to do I finding myself more face palming than feeling smart.

You play as Wonder, a young man tasked with killing 16 colossi to resurrect a girl. These colossi populate the forbidden lands, a grand, lonely expanse you traverse alongside Agro, who is both your horse and sole companion. Despite some pop-in, the game looks consistently excellent from the environment to the designs of the colossi. The colossi are huge, haunting figures, and killing each one plays out almost as a series of puzzles. You have to figure out a way to exploit the individual weaknesses of a colossus, and this is usually quite fun but the specific method of killing one can be too obscure at times. Although you're given a hint or two to keep you on the right track, figuring out what exactly the game wants you to do can be a bit frustrating, especially as you often have to goad the unreliable enemy AI into certain actions before you can take them down. This was my first playthrough of the game and I often found myself unsure as to what I was supposed to do.

When you do manage to take down a colossus though, and everything works as intended, the game feels epic in scale and you're treated to some fantastic music. The music in Shadow of the Colossus is great and helps to maintain the sombre tone of the game.

On the whole though, the core gameplay loop is solid - you're told your next target, you find them, kill them, and move on to the next one. How you find the colossi is quite smart as well. In a well-lit area, you raise your sword and point it around. When you point it in the right direction, a beam focuses on your destination. I liked this, as it felt more interactive than just following a waypoint or a minimap. No minimap means the game can do away with the HUD when you're not in combat too, so you can better take in the visuals. Getting to your destination is no trouble either, as your horse is speedy enough and exploring the world is decent fun.

It's just a shame that playing the game can be annoying in places. In addition to some of the fights as mentioned above, the controls, and the way the camera fights against you in particular, are frustrating. It's not terrible, and you've kinda gotta just accept that the camera has a mind of its own and let it do it's thing. It gives you some nice angles at times, but at others it makes you stare at the floor. Using the left trigger to focus on a colossus in a fight helps alleviate this issue a bit. The controls while climbing are also a bit iffy. It can feel temperamental, glitchy and like you're not in control.

Overall though, this is a great game with a solid, somewhat emotional ending. The ending didn't take me completely by surprise but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Although I think Shadow of the Colossus is great, I also think it's plagued by some issues that perhaps stem from it being a remake of an older game with antiquated design sensibilities. Regardless, what is mostly a beautiful experience is marred by some frustrating elements.

The collosi can be frustrating puzzles, the story is anything but funny, and the controls are absolutely garbage. Yet Shadow of the Collosus may very well be the greatest game ever made. The game is proof that games can be artwork, and a testament to the times when developers put more care into there games in trying to make something special rather than another hit free to play game. The game creates a perfect cycle of working with the story, and then using the time between Collosi to reflect on the tiny details the game gives you about its story, then relieving the boredom with a new collosus. Not only this, but the game has, in my opinion, the best ending in all of video game history. I would say more, but this game should be played with very, very, VERY little beforehand knowledge. It is Worth every cent.

I had high expectations on this game and I got very frustrated. Pros: good graphics, nice soundtrack.

Cons: a lot of glitches and bugs, there is no tutorial, camera can be a real pain in the ass sometimes, controls are a bit awkward, game can be really stressful, there are no checkpoints. A test of patience.

Still, I just didn't feel compelled enough to keep trying, and the way the game is designed, there's not much to do aside facing those single enemies.

The scenaries are gorgeous, and the battles fairly epic and rewarding if you have the patience and desire to overcome them, but to some of us it might get boring or uninteresting as the only real thing you do is defeat colossus.

Perfectly polished and improved cult game – even with better controls! Killing giant monsters has never been so much (melancholic) fun. [Issue#283]

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
