At first, I wasn't enjoying Shadow of Colossus all that much. I found the gameplay mechanics not all that intuitive and the overall aesthetic of the game seemed a little bit outdated, despite it having some great next-gen looking elements to it.

But its epic battles, its outstanding soundtrack and its bold ending completely won me over. Shadow Of The Colossus was a great game back

Shadow Of The Colossus was a great game back when it was released 12 years ago, and I'm glad it was able to be as great of a game now.

    Overrated, artsy game.

My main problem with this game are the controls and camera. The camera auto-corrects it's position each time you try to navigate. Absolutely horrendous. This made the already barebones, arthouse story even more unappealing to me. So many gamers and reviewers laud this game as a must play but I was hugely disappointed by it.

If you're a modern gamer who never played this during the PS2 era, or who appreciates more developed narratives with compelling characters like God of War, Witcher3, RDR2, Detroit, Final Fantasy, Nier Automata, LA Noire, Uncharted, etc..AVOID THIS PRETENTIOUS, ARCHAIC CRAP.

The beautiful visuals are not worth the pain. If you want visuals, story and great gameplay, just play any of the above-mentioned games.

Most disappointing PS4 exclusive so far.

Overall it's a nice game. I personally like remakes of game of the old days. But I personally think this game is in a way a bit hyped. I did not feel too much excitement while playing it. I believe Bluepoint did a great job in bringing things back to life again and vastly upgrading the graphical quality, but they haven't quite nailed the art style of overexposure and the overall colour palette is either a hit or a miss. For instance, the rendition of the first colossus battle and the second one is a bit off the rail, for I don't get that kind of epicness in the original anymore. But the fights against Avion (the bird) and the last colossus feel right on the spot. I really wish they could have taken a closer look at the source material or perhaps a full supervision from Mr. Ueda would have made it work. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I bought a PS4 just to play this game, Spider-man, God of War and the other slew of highly acclaimed exclusives for this console. Out of all of these games I will say SotC has not lived out to the legendary status.
One thing that ruins 90% of game are the controls and camera. They are absolutely the worst I have ever seen in any 3rd person game. Where ever you would like to look, apparently the game kwos better than you. Racing on your horse at full gallop and the camera drops to the ground where you can't see any obstacles in front of you. Weird. I enjoy standing completely still and moving the camera a tad and watch the game quickly switch the view to some neutral position that doesn't make sense. Watch any video on any YouTube gameplay and watch the the fans gushing about the game still struggle will it. In fact many often comment on the several downsides of this game and yet still call it one their favorites, if not THE favorite of all time. I don't get how such a major drawback still can be overlooked even after 2 remasters. It's practically criminal.
It's not just the camera controls, the hero and horse controls are terrible too. Watch players on a YouTube video fight the controls while trying to cross the narrow land bridges. It's a good thing your horse won't run off the edge because that would be game breaking. It's because your horse kind of has a mind of its own and will run his own path if you let him and don't fight it. But if you like to think you have control, that's where you'll mess up. What makes matters worse is that there are Colossi that need the horse for combat. Even just controlling your elfish hero that prances across the prairies like a ballerina is not that intuitive. People would put up with bad controls like this a couple decades ago but now this can't be forgiven.
I didn't really know much about this game and what I was getting into but after defeating the first 4 bosses I realized that that is all this game is. Defeating large tedious bosses. There is nothing else to fight or do that really matters. I've learned from watching walkthroughs that there are items and shrines to find out in the world. I don't know where they are because the world is pretty huge but barren. The gamer I watched even said that he wouldn't bother getting them until AFTER he defeated the Colossi. What is the point then?
The game is really MAYBE a couple hours of actual interesting gameplay surrounded by things out of your control that just slow you down or make you start over. Long travels times to boss locations that will be redone if you die. Fall in water? Expect a very slow swim back to land. Prepare to wait for each Colossus to perform the action needed so you can begin your ascent to his sweet spot. If you miss it, prepare to wait again. Need your hero to rest on a safe spot during your climb? Get ready for him to flop all over the place like a rag doll from the slightest movement. I also wonder what percentage of SotC players have used videos and wikis to defeat a Colossus because many times things are unclear. I rarely ever go online for hints but I did more on this game than in most other games played in my lifetime put together. The hints the game gives you are vague and sometimes misleading. In one, the voice tells you to knock off the beasts armor to defeat him but in actuality he knocks his own armor off by striking a metal plate instead of soft ground. Something the game expected me to figure out at random, I guess.
And the one thing that shocked me the most is the Colossus battles get tedious very quickly. There is no tension because even a direct strike by a colossus might do less than 25% damage which quickly automatically rejuvenates. You can fall from some of the tallest places and still not even take 50% damage. I guess that's good because you would just be restarting from the main temple or last shrine each time but it also means there are little to no stakes involved.
This game isn't a test of skill really but a test of frustration. If you are the type that doesn't get easily frustrated by challenges then this is the game for you. I'm not that type of person.

They made a great job porting it to the PS4, the graphics are gorgeous, and the filters and photo mode add to the fun for those who have already played the game on the PS2, I still have some problems with the camera, It moves by itself many times, and it's almost impossible to control it, I know you can focus on the colossus by pressing a button, but still, I would have loved to have full control of the camera as we do in most games.

Some people don't like to walk around the vast world of Shadow Of The Colossus because it's "lifeless", and it really is, but that's part of the game's experience, they don't play a soundtrack when you're exploring the world, which creates a silence that gives the player a feeling of solitude, I mean, you're going on an impossible quest, in a cursed land where life pretty much doesn't exist, with only your horse as your ally. Shadow Of The Colossus was set up in a way that this lifeless atmosphere works on its favor.

You should definitely pick it up if you haven't played it yet, as you should know, it's a classic and everyone who's a gamer should experience it at some point, granted some people won't like it, while others will, but I mean, you'll only know it if you play it, so go for it!

Finally arriving at a colossus whereabouts, the "fight" is over way too fast and that's literally all the "fun" there's to this game. The player is then warped back to the initial point and the whole procedure is repeated. Repeat that procedure for 16 times and you have this game. I think this game put such an emphasis on the cinematic means (e.g. light, camera movement) that anything else was done weak, hence the bad gaming experience. Considering that this is an older game and it's a relatively cheap remake I still can't make up how players are supposed to enjoy this because of anything else than nostalgia. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics-7/10
The graphics werent bad, but I've seen better. Compared to others like The Last of Us or Halo SotC falls short for a 2018 remaster. Details in the surroundings and accessories are lacking. With the amount of time that Wander uses his unique sword, Id have expected more details and intricacies. Look at Ellie's special switchblade, while basic in design and quite frankly generic, it has a great amount of detail giving it a unique presence. Although this might be an unfair comparison I would say that Skyrim, modded, bests SotC in graphics even being released 5 years prior.

    Art-6.5/10
Many people said the art of SotC was astounding and I wanted to believe them. First run through, I would agree that the scenery is nice, but it quickly grew old. Running across the same field and fighting the Colossi, sometimes in all too similar arenas, takes away from the individuality of the bosses. Colors are also dull and muted. The Colossi themselves have an interesting design and do themselves justice in that aspect. The architectural formations seen on the beasts is fantastic and begs questions, but for all of the commotion about the art, I would say SotC also fell short in that aspect. IMO, If you are looking for a game with extraordinary scenery, Horizon Zero Dawn does a much better job of displaying nature and wildlife.

    Story-2/10
SotC has virtually no storyline. The two points are awarded simply b/c they told the character what he was doing and why. But they give no real reason or backstory as to why the player should really care. There are too many questions and not enough answers. IMO, the Dark Souls series does a much better job of creating questions and letting the audience dig for answers which can be found by talking to other NPCs or reading descriptions of items obtained throughout the journey.

    Character Development-0/10
Development of the one character that SotC focuses on is also nonexistent. With hardly any dialogue, the main character, known as Wander (not revealed in game), feels distant from the player. There was no connection between Wander and myself while playing, and his quest to resurrect the girl Mono (also not revealed) definitely did not feel as important as Wander makes it out to be.

    Ending - 3/10
IMO, the ending was a huge letdown. Wander dies, but honestly who cares? The game made no effort to forge a bond with him. The moment when Agro (his horse and the only name revealed in-game aside from Lord Emon) dies, all I thought was, "damn, guess its on foot from here." Even Wander is hardly phased by the "death" of his companion. The last fight was also a major downer because it gives the illusion that you can control the outcome, in reality, all Emon does is chuck a sword in a pond and you're done for.

    Difficulty-4/10
As the game is a puzzle type, I expected a more thought-provoking challenge. The bosses themselves arent difficult to defeat, and in fact, the most difficult part is just having enough stamina to hang on while they try a sad attempt to shake you off. Reaching a boss takes all of five minutes, and while I admit that there were a few that stumped me, they are ultimately copies from one boss to another. All that differs is the placement of vitals. I got more satisfaction from playing other puzzle games like Portal, and Trine and for much less money.

    Soundtrack-5/10
The soundtrack was good, but to me, there was not enough variation in the boss tracks. This detracts from their uniqueness and it was also poorly implemented as the music was barely audible when fighting, taking away from the intensity.

    Background Noise-1/10
From what I remember the air was stagnant. Barley any wind, ambient water noise, or animals, no rustling tree leaves, and two voice lines for saying HYA and calling Agro. Hitting your sword on different objects made no difference, Agro must have been of steel or something b/c thats what it sounded like.

    Price-7/10
I bought the game for $28, preowed. Not bad a price for a PS4 game, but after finishing it for the first time I realized I wouldnt have payed this much had I known what I was in for. At most I would probably have paid $10. To calculate if a game is worth its price I compare dollar value to hours played. I generally believe a game to be worth it when the hours played equals the dollar value, unless it has exceptional gameplay, story, characters, etc. For SotC however, I put in about 7 hours before completing the story. The other factors IMO are not enough to make up for the difference.

    Overall Game-play - 3/10
The overall is low. With little satisfaction and replay value SotC is not a game I would recommend. I could spend twice as much on a different game and get an experience 10x greater. The story is not very interesting and is very confusing due to a lack of in game explanation. None of this is to say that you shouldnt buy the game, but this is just my strong opinion

CONTROLS: WTF? Are these controls intuitive to the games developers? Because they make NO SENSE to me! The characters center of balance seems to depend on the camera angle. You can control the camera with the joystick, but once you let go of the joystick THE CAMERA AUTOMATICALLY MOVES TO A NEW POSITION. Thus you're center of gravity is ALWAYS CHANGING. Which is VERY important because this game is basically just trying to hold onto stuff.

I didn't play this game when it first came out, but if it got rave reviews then because of its quality of graphics or whatever that's great. But this games story and its game controls are horrid. Unforgivably horrid.

I can see why some people consider this to be a great game. The setting, the music, and the colossi are all well crafted. In that regard, there is some enjoyment to be had with this game. However, despite the praise this game gets, I wouldn't recommend it. In fact, I was having a hard time enjoying myself for the majority of the campaign. The controls are horrible, you have little to no control over the camera and I found myself frustrated with these two mechanics more than anything throughout my playthrough. Navigation is also poor. You may be going in the right direction yet still get lost without knowing where you made a wrong turn. It also doesn't help that your horse handles like crap. In regards to the colossi, once you've figured out how to defeat one, the act of actually taking it out is pretty simple and not very fun. This basically sums up the entire experience for me, lacking in fun. If you're looking for something different than your typical open-world action/adventure, this might be something you'll enjoy. But I would warn those who are considering picking this up due to the high praise this game has gotten over the years: this game is a very acquired taste. I'd argue that the gameplay is the game's weakest feature, and if a game is no fun to play, what's the point? Expand

What I cannot accept are the absolutely horrific controls and camera placement issues this game has. From first moment to last the controls are so unwieldy, so unresponsive, and oh so annoying that all of the potential this game had to be good lay in ruins. Had I known the control system was so flawed I would have never dreamed of buying the game. I had heard that the original controls for the PS2 were also finicky but had expected (yes, I am gullible) the remaster to perhaps correct these problems. Instead it simply upgraded the graphics and kept all the problems the original game suffered from. I'm not sure how anyone can score this game beyond a 7 with such dire control mechanisms and clunky movement - especially when the entire game is based upon roaming the land using said woeful controls. Unless you are a die hard fan I'd recommend you avoid it - certainly if you've never played the game before give it a wide berth. I managed about 3 hours before becoming so frustrated that I turned it off.

I couldn't play the original on PS2 as the camera was infuriatingly impossible to control but glad I revisited this game the developer Bluepoint has refined and polished it to a fine tee. Closest you're likely to get to Zelda-esque title on PS4, so satisfying to take down this huge scale Colossi and the musical score to accompany it is just breathtaking at times.

    A true masterpiece.

I don't really understand what all the fuss is about, its nothing special. All the game is, is a series of boss battles scattered through an open world. The climbing itself in the game feels unitutitive, the boss battles feel underwhelming and the world itself is completely empty. Its a pretty flat experience.

How much time did you put into it?

I played the game for a few hours, took out a few of the monsters or bosses or whatever you want to call them. I stopped playing because the game didn't feel like it was worth continuing.

Do you think you'll try it again at some point?

No, this game is gone and I don't plan on picking it up again. If you love it, great but man its not for me.

This is how a remake should be. this game is great, really addictive from the moment you kill the first colossus you know you'd want to kill more. The Japanese sad tone to the story adds an extra layer of quality. i took a point because on the back of Argo I felt sometimes the controls were a bit clunky but its just me and its really minimal, Brilliant Remake of a great tale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shadow of colossus was not a good game..... Sure the main character is evil for killing the monsters to revive a dead girl but what else is there. Your trying to revive a girl by slaying oversized monsters and must kill them all to bring back the girl and finish the game but to do it you have to travel on horse where there is no obstacles at all accept for oversized bosses a few ground enemies or additional content would have in my opinion helped the game , this is why i hated shadow of colossus in 2005 and why i still hate it now. I guess i could give it another go and this is really a review for the 2005 version not this version so meh. It had nice graphics for ps2 game but the lack of anything to do and no direction on where to find the big monsters sucked. Nothing to write about really accept that it has a bad ending which is the only good thing about it , that and it had one of the first open world concept for gaming. Expand

This poor review of Shadow of the Colossus (SOC) is not based on bad controls. The main character certainly is difficult to control, but this issue has been thoroughly addressed by previous reviewers.

Instead, I write this review to try to counter idealized "professional" reviews by the major gaming sites. Of the three reviews I read, each acknowledges that SOC has technical issues but excuses these as part of the charm of the original game. This is hypocritical to me because most other games suffer significantly in the review because of technical issues.

The premise of SOC is pretentious. 16 villains in all to fight in the large world of the game. The point of this setup is to make the player dread and anticipate their next battle as they wander through the empty wasteland. However, you get quite bored as you wait for the next fight.

For years I have been suspicious of online gaming reviews. The review often seems to reflect the personal bias of the critic. Here, each of the evaluators openly acknowledges their nostalgia for the original game. But a video game review is not the place for individual nostalgia.

While I was reluctant to rent this game I decided to because of the rave reviews I read. Instead of enjoying myself, I only finished the game because I was too far in to turn back. Professional reviewers need to take their job more seriously because it is their responsibility to save us time and money as consumers. The reviews I refer to here did not achieve this.

This is the single most disappointing game I think I've ever played. I went into this thinking it would be a 4/5 minimum, perhaps a 5/5. It's a 1, which is the lowest score I give to anything that isn't outright broken. This game only took me around 7 hours, and yet it was still the most tedious game I've ever forced myself to finish

This game is the prime example of why a game cannot be purely art and atmosphere. The story is virtually nonexistent. You get an opening cutscene, a very minor development 75% through, and then the end. That's it. There is no attempt to provide anything else. Ignore those that write this off as a subtle story - there's a difference between subtle and lazy. Also ignore those that say the ending is "worth it". It's a mix of obvious and nonsensical developments, and anyone who says that they find meaning in the nonsensical is lying to themselves. It's a bad anime plot.

The gameplay provides nothing positive aside from occasional moments of awe, mostly in the beginning. There are a few moments of wonder when you climb the first few colossi, or when they slightly change the formula, but it is quickly replaced with frustration and tedium.

Frustration and tedium. That's the whole design philosophy behind the game. Let's walk through the pattern that you will be repeating sixteen times in a row.

    1) You watch a cutscene of a statue exploding, some shadow dudes looking at you, and a voice telling you where to go. No story development is given aside from the start and the end except in *one* of these, and it's minor.

    2) You get on your dumbass horse and try to find the location. Ignore people who say the horse is difficult to control because it's uber-realistic. Pretty sure real horses don't run stupidly into rocks and trees and jump off goddamn cliffs.

Have fun trying to find this thing! Your map sucks, and the only tool you have is a glowing beam pointing to it. Wait, pointing right to it? That makes it easy, right? Nope! The physical design of the world is one of the worst I've ever seen in a video game. There's mazes of ravines, unintuitive physical bottlenecks, and forests you can get lost in. By the way, sometimes your sword won't work - usually (and I say usually because it sometimes does) because the sun isn't visible. So in those areas that are extra confusing, like the ravines and forest, you are ON YOUR OWN. Don't expect to find anything to do. The world is empty except some fruit and an occasional hawk and lizard. I hope the graphics distract you long enough.

    3) So you found the thing? Congratulations! Now you have to solve a little puzzle on how to climb up on it. Most of these are obvious or tedious. One requires you to climb like 8 pillars until you trigger an event. This is only a challenge because the controls suck. (And if you say the controls *don't* suck, please tell me why doing the EXACT SAME TASK EIGHT TIMES IN A ROW is good game design). One requires you to pick up a torch, using the "pick up button" that the game has never told you about. If you get hit, your character will lay on the ground for an inexplicably long time. During this time you won't be attacked again, like you would expect from a game people describe as realistic (or is that only when defending the dumbass horse). Once your character gets up again, you might be attacked immediately, and have to repeat the unavoidable process until you die.

    4) You made it on! Congratulations! See the blue glowy spot? Go there. You can only move when you're not flailing. Have fun holding the same button down again and again. If you decide to press the jump button, please be aware that it only works at random times. When you make it to the glowy spot, you have to hold down the same button until you stop flailing, and try to get a stab in. That's it. The fast majority of the gameplay is you holding down a single button until your character stops ragdolling like an idiot. Hopefully you don't fall.

Oh, you did fall? Don't worry, your character can fall 60 feet with minimal damage - because this is a realistic game, that's why the horse has bad controls. But you probably have to redo the puzzle again. I hope you like redoing puzzles, because once you know the answer it just becomes a tedious slog with the controls.

    5) You killed it! Hooray! You have to do this 16 times.

This game is an awful. It's a gorgeous awful game, but it's still an awful game.

Moreover the climbing function can get very jarring on some colossi, namingly Malus, which is disappointing considering it is the last colossus in the game. The world is an aspect, commonly glossed over, of which the game deserves more credit for; while scarce and quiet, it begins to seem vast and majestic, allowing the player to lose all sense of location and engage with a vivid fantasy.

Scattered through the lengthy paths of the setting are towering bosses, which prompt critical thinking in order to be overcome. While each is different, they all share a common feature of weak points, and repetition becomes evident. If any boss were used as a final challenge for another fantasy adventure, contrasting to common boss designs, it would be magnificently used for dramatic contrast, but when being constantly lined up, these monumental quests appear more as menial monotony.

For every moment a player can experience, Shadow of the Colossus offers a soundtrack that matches it perfectly; from calm isolation, to dreading fear, to a sense of magnificent accomplishment, the musical score matches it without flaw. Every piece is fantastic, and helps not only craft an untouchable atmosphere, but tell a story that images never could. This phenomenal composition is remarkable, and I struggle to find something that surpasses it.

Shadow of the Colossus takes a lot of praise for being unique. It blew away the people who had few expectations, and that newly kindled flame of shock never dwindled amongst them. However, remove the rose tinted glasses, take a look deeper, and you'll see a game quite overrated by its audience of 2005's enthusiastic youths. I enjoy Shadow of the Colossus, for its many merits, but it will never be the flawless masterpiece many regard it as.

Yes... that is, unfortunately, the first thing anyone looking to buy this game needs to know. You will beat it, and you will beat it fast. Fast on Normal. Fast on Difficult. (Don't bother playing it on Easy unless you've never held a controller before. It's really not worth it then, especially at $39.99.)

I am giving this game an "8.2/10" because I got it at half-price, but that's still not it's regular price, and the price of remasters should always be a part of their judgment.

Of course, it really is a BEAUTIFUL remaster with visuals rebuilt from the ground up. I can actually watch Wander on his trusty steed Agro, and say to myself, "THIS is what Never Released Zelda WiiU title would've looked like if Nintendo had gone forward with that Tech Demo from 2011." When I sat down and saw Wander carry Mono into the Forbidden Land, I thought I'd purchased the wrong game, despite my memory knowing this was the same game. That's how beautiful it looked.

But back to the main point. This game is SHORT. Because many things were fixed - especially that frustrating grip mechanic. The game is not nearly as frustrating as it once was (even on PS3), and can therefore be beaten in less than 10 hours. These days, that's a very, very short game. Like "No Man's Sky, what the hell is this?" kinda short.

Also, the many photo filters are wonderful, but I didn't really understand what the point was of hiding some of the bonus content behind beating this or that Colossus with different filters. It really was a strange decision, I feel. However, if you're the kind for it, and if you really want to challenge yourself, apply the Night filter (bring the slider down till it's really dark), put the game on hardest difficulty, and enjoy. No headphones though! You wanna make sure you only see their eyes!

Music is as beautiful as ever, but on a better audio system this time, and I'll never understand why Kow Otani didn't also do the music for Last Guardian (which I personally thought was lacking in emotional substance most of the time due to clunky-ness AND music).

Conclusion: See TL;DR above, and possibly add to that: This was the last Team Ico game that was ever released (rereleased?), since they never finished Last Guardian, someone else did. SO... buy it for the feels?? Who knows!

Most of the reviews are based mainly in nostalgia, one of them even recounting solely their past experiences with the game, reviews such as this have more than likely artificially boosted this game to it's current position on this site. Looking at the game alone; it controls horribly, the player character is really floaty and awkward, even more so for that of the horse, she will get stuck on every little object, which in tandem with her wide turning is horrible for maneuverability, especially in forested areas. The climbing of the colossi in this game is also very iffy, to say the least, climbing these things during the boss fights is a pain, with the last boss being the worst of them all. Not the difficulty of managing the stamina meter, that is simply one of the game's mechanics; just when the try to shake you off, when the colossi shake the player characters grip tends to shift, during the 15th boss i was holding onto the boss' shoulder armor when it started to shake, I got flung to it's back, and then to the floor, during which my stamina meter was more than half way full. My Final criticism for this game is the strenuous animation, particularly when getting up after being knocked down, to site another instance in the game, during the 11th boss, i was rammed and my character was knocked onto the ground where he remained while he was hit twice more and died. This game is beautiful and back in the day i see how it would've been deserving of this high a standing when compared to other games of the time, but this game has been released twice since then, bringing in more money for the same developers for the same game, adding nothing but aesthetics, and garnering the same praise, so, is this game worth buying? I'd say that this game is worth buying to an extent, those who are nostalgic for the original will be the main audience for this game, but if you're someone who happens to have (as of writing this) $30 burning a hole in your wallet, or you just want to experience a style of game not so prevalent today, then the Shadow Of The Colossus is the game for you. What could've been one of my most memorable gaming experiences turned out to be one of the most disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I still thought Shadow of the Colossus was a good game, but I did not understand where the game's status as a "masterpiece" came from.

As far as the positives with this game go, the game looks absolutely stunning, and is one of the most visually appealing games ever released. Also, the attention to detail within the world's landscapes is amazing, and it really makes the whole world feel alive. Finally, I really liked how the game took a non-traditional method to storytelling, and rather than relying on constant dialogue and cut scenes, the game tells its story through the actions of the player.

Even though there are a lot of positives about this game, there are quite a few negatives that I simply cannot ever look past. First of all, the gameplay and controls both feel very clunky and unresponsive. This may have felt just fine in 2005, but in 2018, when we have games with advanced physics engines and tighter controls, this game's controls stick out like a sore thumb. Also, I found very few of the colossi to be genuinely fun and entertaining to take down, those being Avion, Phalanx, and Dirge, while the rest either felt decent at best or insanely frustrating at worst (Celosia). But quite possibly the worst of all, this game has very little replay value. What I mean by that is, once you've beaten the game once, there is no reason to back and play the game a second time, as it will be the exact same thing. So unless you really enjoyed playing through the game, I can't recommend you play through the game more than once, and I don't ever see myself playing through this game again.

In conclusion, Shadow of the Colossus is certainly a good game and one I recommend everyone tries out once throughout their life. But even so, the game is incredibly flawed and far from a masterpiece, at least in my opinion.

SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS is on the top five PS4 games of 2018. This remastered version is awesome, it brings beatiful graphics, the gameplay is light and all the colossus are AWESOME ! THEY ARE INSANE ON THE REMASTERED VERSION !. The game has a sweet soundtrack and the history has a kind of sadness that make you play the whole game anxious for the grand finale.

    A masterpiece beautifully remade !
I would like to give it a 10 but the camera still needs work and Wander's face lacks the personality of the PS2 version in my opinion.
Out of that, Bluepoint's work on the environments and the creatures is outstanding and faithful to the original.

I really loved the PS2 original and subsequent PS3 HD remaster. I consider SOTC to be a gaming classic. At the time I really loved the art, emotionally evoking story and feel to the world. I had mixed feelings about a remake on first hearing of its release. I didn't want it to be a sacrilegious, messed around with, poorly done caricature of my beloved game.

This game is certainly not that. It delivers a truly beautiful version, especially in 4k HDR. The game is just spectacular to look at and the game-play of the original is completely intact and unadulterated. The controls are perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned, but will probably need some getting used to for newcomers. I've tried all the new control options and they all seem to work fine to me, both old style and modern. If you've never played this game, absolutely do not let the criticism aimed at the control system put you off! Yes, they're slightly fiddly, but not at all a problem once familiarised. The incredible original soundtrack is as per the original, which certainly needs no improving. The new photo mode option is a great distraction and a welcome addition.

I don't think there is anything lacking at all in this version whatsoever, in fact it's been great playing it again and has deepened my appreciation considerably. The game plays at a relaxing pace most of the time and I find the best way to play it is to just explore and take your time enjoying the atmosphere and amazing scenery and vistas. I find it very relaxing to play and it helps me unwind. Playing it again has made me realise how unique the game is, particularly in the modern gaming climate of fast paced action/ FPS type games, driving sims etc. It's definitely not going to appeal to everyone, but if you allow yourself to be immersed in it's atmosphere and get into the pace of the game, you'll find it an experience unlike anything else. The seemingly low key story, reveals itself to be quite an epic in its later stages.

If any game could be described as having artistic merit (Personally, I think video games definitely have merit as being an art form), it would be this.

*Slight changes I have noticed, to that of the originals: Dormin when speaking, has a female voice layered over the male voice. The lighting of the game is slightly different to the originals. The bloom light effects are not as pronounced. The game does not have quite the same pastoral colour pallette. None of this bothers me, the above were probably due to technical restrictions of the original hardware. I love the new look of the game entirely!

As a remaster/remake, this is an absolute beast of a game, the level of detail they put into every aspect of it is breathtaking.
But... there isn't anything new that wasn't in the PS3 HD or PS2 versions - apart from graphics - so if you didn't dig the game the first time then don't expect to like it now.
It's still a polarising game, and it's not for all tastes.

You play as a man tasked with reviving a girl somehow special to you, and are ordered to traverse a vast land and slaughter sixteen gigantic beasts called Colossi. By your side you have your noble horse, named Agro, and you’re equipped with a sword and bow and arrow to aid you in your fight. The graphics on the PS4 are a nice improvement, but unfortunately, the controls don’t match up. Agro steers terribly and will absolutely not cooperate with you in forests. Also, while in a battle with a Colossi, she will refuse to come to you when you call her, forcing you to chase her down and mount her yourself. However, she is a nice companion and good at getting places faster. She will be useful in battles with Colossi, where she can evade attacks such as fireballs with a speed quicker than the human player owns. I have to give the game credit for creating unique designs for each of sixteen Colossi. The game also gives you the option to switch your controls around (for example: “classic” controls can be switched to the remake’s controls, or can be kept as classic for those who are familiar with the 2005 controls). With each Colossi, a unique challenge is presented, and although the end goal is always the same, getting to the magic sigils on the Colossi is different every time. It’s getting to the sigils and effectively taking them out that is the most exciting during the battles. After a long, hard fight with a raging Colossi, the final stab and freezeframe is a great reward for your troubles. Expand

Still, it's a masterpiece of game art and still a pretty bold release by today's standards. All you do is ride hard and slay colossi again and again. Once you figure out the key to each one they are cake. There is not much extra to explore within the world either, but the world itself is like a character with a story to tell and is simply beautiful to behold.

It's definitely one my favorite games of all time and I"m glad to enjoy it in all it's new graphical glory, but some elements have not stood the test of time. This was a masterpiece in the PS2 days however and some things like camera and controls sometimes took a back seat back then. However, it's a missed opportunity not to address these issues now. They should have completely revamped the movement, controls, and camera for the new age. Still, I'm glad to have revisited the game once again as the graphical overhaul is well worth it to really enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of this game.

I'd personally not played the original on the PS2 or the HD version for the PS3 however finally getting to play this game I realise what all the fuss was about. The level of intricate programming that must have gone into this cannot be overstated, a lot of passion was put into making this game and it surely shows. The sound in the game was fantastic every detail from simply galloping along on your horse to the roars of the colossus was perfectly implemented and had a very real feel to it, allowing the full immersion of you and the game.

The graphics. I've never been so satisfied with water, which is a big thing to me, and considering this is a remaster too astonishes me. The colossus have very real features with no flare or un-textured spots on them, such as hair that moves along with the direction you are moving in, and intricate engravings on the parts that you cant even climb on. Love was put into this game and cannot stress enough, if you love great graphics in a game, this is another reason you should check this one out.

Moreover the gameplay, is mostly amazing, it almost always works and climbing your first colossus is an experience I'll never forget. However, with some of the colossi after even just the first one I started experiencing some difficulties with the camera, and the actual movement on the colossus. Such as when I was climbing the second one I would get stuck on strange places, lose stamina and fall off for no reason, which was frustrating. Furthermore the camera quite a few times was very frustrating as it moved on its own. Even when just riding your horse it would sometimes feel very ridged and robotic and you tried to manoeuvre your way through tight spaces, but couldn't see anything just because of the camera. Although sometimes frustrating I found these things didn't happen too often, and it is a remaster from the ground up. This is the only reason I didn't give it a 9 or a 10.

The story I found was more of something there to keep you going, it wasn't too necessary to a game like this but more added reason behind what you are doing. It had a very big plot twist I didn't expect but loved and I felt it was satisfactory to what it set out to do. It's not a huge story but it's still there and very prominent in moments.

Overall shadow of the colossus was an extremely rare experience in gaming and one you will surely remember, with excellent sound work, stunning visuals and excellent gameplay shadow of the colossus will go down as one of my all time favourites, a must have for all types of gamers.

“Welcome to the Shadow of the Colossus Remastering Committee. The first item on the agenda is horse control. We had some feedback that because the horse runs in a zig zag it keeps falling off cliffs”
“We can add logic to make it stop at cliffs”
“What about rocks and trees ?” “Nah – just let it run into those” “Alternatively we could make it run in a straight line ?” “Don’t be silly –

“Don’t be silly – next item is marketing. We want to market the game as open world so how can help with this ?”
“We can add a map ?”
“What will the map help with ?”
    “Nothing”
“Won’t players see through that ?”
“We can add a button to hide/show icons like on proper open world maps”
“Perfect – next is camera control. Should we redesign this ?”
“I think we should keep it as is since it is integral to the artistic vision of the game”
“But the camera keeps banging into cliffs ?”
“This symbolises the struggle of the player banging their head against the wall when trying to control the horse. Any way this would require two joysticks on the controller”
“It’s had two joysticks since 1997”
“Moving on … finally we had a request to redo the motion capture for the character running – we received comments it looked the run you do when desperate for the toilet and finally see a toilet in the distance”
“It would be expensive – if people ask just say you would run like that with a sword in your trousers”
“I now bring the meeting to an end. Does anyone need a lift home ? It’s by horse so will take twice as long as walking but at least you won’t fall off a cliff”

I was really really hyped for this game and when I finally start playing the hype was over. I tried to look at this game only as art. It helped to make me finish this game, but when I was trying to enjoy shadow of the colossus, it just felt forced. Did not have fun at all and not even breath taking visuals of environment and beautiful yet scary Colossus did not change the fact, that II was really really hyped for this game and when I finally start playing the hype was over. I give this 10 for art, and 2 for game, one of my biggest disappointment in video games, maybe I missed the whole point or I just cant enjoy game for its good looks and I need something that drives me to feel for the characters in its world. I give it 6 only because most critics love it and it makes me feel like I cant see what most of you can, something to be impressed about...what a shame.

I had just brought my 4ktv and this was the first game I tried and in resolution mode the visuals were most impressive. HDR highlights the wonderous haunted land accentuating the beauty in the art design. Having only played the original once round a friends on his ps2 years ago I kind of knew what to expect going in, but the experience simply blew me away on my ps4 pro.

According to that same friend this is an accurate remake and nothing new has been added only a visual upgrade so in that regard the game has aged well in my opinion. If you are a fan of adventure games zelda etc and own ps4 then this game is essential for your collection. I kept thinking of films like Legend, Princess Mononoke and Labyrinth as I played through.

An actual masterpiece. When I heard they were remaking this I was worried but it is basically the same game with some modern options. Even Argo is still derpy.

Perfectly polished and improved cult game – even with better controls! Killing giant monsters has never been so much (melancholic) fun. [Issue#283]

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
