Having never played the previous releases, I was really looking forward to find out what the fuzz is all about and, after 16 beaten colossi, I still don't understand it. So, 6/10 is even a bit stretch...

“But the camera keeps banging into cliffs ?”

“It’s had two joysticks since 1997”
“Moving on … finally we had a request to redo the motion capture for the character running – we received comments it looked the run you do when desperate for the toilet and finally see a toilet in the distance”

I was really really hyped for this game and when I finally start playing the hype was over. I tried to look at this game only as art. It helped to make me finish this game, but when I was trying to enjoy shadow of the colossus, it just felt forced. Did not have fun at all and not even breath taking visuals of environment and beautiful yet scary Colossus did not change the fact, that II was really really hyped for this game and when I finally start playing the hype was over. I give this 10 for art, and 2 for game, one of my biggest disappointment in video games, maybe I missed the whole point or I just cant enjoy game for its good looks and I need something that drives me to feel for the characters in its world. I give it 6 only because most critics love it and it makes me feel like I cant see what most of you can, something to be impressed about...what a shame.

7/10 is a good game for me. Not bad, not very good.

Obvious things: this game is beautiful. Period. This game is different than most of the games on the market. Open question: does 'different' mean 'good' by definition?

Sadly, I've found this game quite boring. To reach the Colossi takes 10 minutes of very-nice-views-but-nothing-more. To beat the Colossi it's either directly-obvious-what-to-do or frustratingly-non-obvious. The difficulty level is uneven and I've found some middle-Colossi to be the most challenging.

The story is virtually non-existent. For ~8h of play there is nothing. The ending is open, which is cool when you have observed character development for x hours, but with no background it makes it even more empty.

Some reviews point to the "uncomfortable feeling when killing innocent Colossi". I kind of missed that as well.

It's a nice game, but it's far from 9.0 score.

If you are looking for "something completely different" but "with deep story" and possibly "for mature people" I highly recommend "Everybody's gone to the Rapture".

So first I'll concede that the game is bleakly beautiful, atmospheric, sad, mysterious, and all the other words reviewers have used in their ecstatic paeans to its apparently undeniable brilliance. It's all those things, yes. And the remaster is astonishing: it's now one of the best looking games on the PS4, not just artistically speaking(because it was always beautiful from an artistic standpoint, even back on PS2), but technically speaking too. The detail, the textures, the animation; it's all fantastically impressive, and frankly light-years ahead of anything Team Ico have ever done, including The Last Guardian. The fur on the Colossi is particularly lovely. Makes you want to grab a hunk of it and bury your face in it.
It's a unique game, and it's been extremely influential too - this can be seen in the number of developers that have incorporated 'colossi' of their own into their games(even the great Nintendo paid homage with the four Beast-dungeons in Breath of the Wild.), or the reach of the tonal aesthetic of the game - the relentless use of SotC's muted palette in so many subsequent AAA releases, a kind of bleached, muddy, grey-brown look that arguably influenced the look of games as different as Gears Of War and Killzone.
It's an atmospheric game, but in many ways it's not entirely enjoyable to play - there is a loneliness to it all, a sense of crushing solitude that remains unbroken throughout. The hills, the mountains and rivers, lakes and seas, have their own looming presence, like they're watching you from a distance. It's slightly spooky to wander a land in which almost all life, certainly all human life, is absent. A few scurrying lizards and the occasional bird are all you'll see, besides your horse and the colossi themselves. I personally think it requires a reasonably happy mindset to play it. I wouldn't want to play it at a low moment that's for sure.
But like I said, after all the positives there is one issue that comes close to ruining the game, and it's not just a problem in SotC - all Team Ico's games suffer from it: The controls in this game are appalling. I've been playing The Last Guardian recently and the controls in that are probably slightly worse, but in tLG at least you're not tasked with anything too demanding or finicky. In SotC however, you are required to climb the colossi, and jump back and forth between parts of their body, all while hanging on to particular handholds, all while your stamina meter gradually dwindles away, at which point you drop to the ground. There are platforms located on the colossi at certain points, but the motion of their movements tosses you into the air and sends you flying around in unpredictable ways. Having fought the third colossus(MILD SPOILER), a huge figure who smashes his sword into the ground allowing you a moment to scamper up it and grab onto his lovely fur, I fell to the ground so often, and generally for no reason except the appalling controls. At one point, after I'd almost killed him, I was attempting to get back on, and the tremor from a single footstep knocked me to the ground. At this point, and for no apparent reason, it takes ten seconds for me to get to my feet, during which time the colossus has lifted his sword and smashed it down onto my tiny frame, killing me.
The game is full of moments like this - inexplicable moments of frustration, a commingling of bad game design and bad controls, and it's gotten to the point where I can't just shrug it off and say 'that's Team Ico for you'. It shouldn't be like that - they've had so long to get the controls in their games right, and even after the insane delays to tLG it somehow handled worse than their previous games did. This remaster is brilliant in so many ways, but the most important thing that could have been dealt with has been left intact, and it suffers for it. I don't blame Bluepoint for not dealing with the controls - it would have required extensive reworking of the actual game's structure and even the environments and colossi themselves, because the controls are so integral. And the admittedly beautiful animation wouldn't be half as beautiful if the controls had been rejigged to make them responsive. In fact, I think that's the reason the controls are so bad - Team Ico are obsessive about animation, and the length of the animations in their games precludes responsive controls. In this sense they've put the beauty of the game ahead of controls, and there's only so long they can keep on doing it before people turn on them.
It's no longer acceptable, and there's no reason you can't have a beautiful game that handles well. Uncharted manages it. SotC doesn't, and for that it deserves more criticism than it's received. It's wonderful, unique game, but no-one should go into it unaware of just how bad it handles.

    + Wonderful soundtrack
+ Best looking game ever made for PS4 (my opinion) + Decent minimalistic story + Wonderful overall world feeling + Very nice concept. Cons: - Terrible camera and controls, especially when riding a horse. Few battles felt like fights with camera, not with colossus. - AI bugs. - Basically no replay value (each fight is always done the same way).

SoTC is a good game, but the core gameplay is pretty shallow if you ask me. You beat the game once and there is basically no reason to play it again since there is only one tactic per a boss. Still, I would recommend it because it's a decent game and it's pretty cheap.

Emperor's New Clothes. Wooden characters. Terrible controls for the the horse; your means of navigating a lifeless world, a barren expanse to flesh out the time between each boss fight. The camera is awful and can be nauseating on a large screen, especially when navigating large open spaces. Actually the whole thing is a bit depressing, maybe that's what makes this a Masterpiece for some?

If you are going to remaster can't they have fixed the following gaming problems from the 00's which are just crappy not retro.

    - Bad camera
    - Clunking unresponsive controls because the character has to finish the animation it's doing before you do something else
    - Controllering your horse with tank like controls!
    - Waiting and waiting for the AI in boss battles to do what is meant to be doing for you to progress
    - Pretty but nearly empty open world.

It's retro I get it, but scores like 9.7/10 on IGN ridiculous. If this came out from some unknown dev and wasn't a remake it just wouldn't get anything like that score.

The camera swings around wildly, making it difficult to steer the horse in a straight line, gaining and losing speed is arduous, and just nothing about point A to point B made me think wow.

There were several bosses where the events would not trigger properly; one particular boss towards the end of the game tells you to get to higher ground. After baiting the boss into hitting pillars maybe 20 times, the event finally triggered, and a way opened up for me to progress the fight. This was of course after I’d exhausted all other options, as the event hadn’t triggered the first time I tried; it’s deeply dissatisfying knowing your initial solution was right, but the game hadn’t responded to your actions.

Unless you have a deep set love for this game, I’d recommend giving it a miss. I’m not thoroughly convinced I should’ve bought this game, never mind for £30. You can get bigger and better adventures for less money. The developers failed to change the shortcomings in light of modern technologies and progression, and ultimately produced what feels like at best the concept for a game. It doesn’t even seem like the best version of itself.

I couldn't be happier that this remake happened. The graphics, sound,  everything has been remade running on a brand new game engine entirely. The colosi and environments have been overloaded with amazing detail and the world feels very alive despite the quieting emptiness of it. With detailed texture work and lighting this game looks absolutely gorgeous. It's also butter smooth hardly ever dropping frames even when giant colossi are thrashing about. The story has been left untouched retaining the same emotional journey the original offered. No new colosi or extra story but Everything else however has been improved to the MAX. Bluepoint games did a phenomenal job of remaking this classic. ID even go as far to say this surpasses the original and is one of if not the best game remakes ever created. A masterpiece has been made even better i can't wait to see what bluepoint games does next. Absolutely incredible job. 10/10

The magnitude of the colossi, the sheer size of the map, the challenging navigation through various diverse and distinct areas make this game such a pleasure to play. Furthermore the fact that there really is only “1” character makes the play through an introspection of self and really allows for the character to be connected to personally. In an age where games like Destiny 2, FFXIV, Dragon Age, Monster Hunter World etc are all about jam packing goodies and millions of things to do into it, the lack of things to do, and the main point of the game are all heightened because of that. It is technically an open world game, but the world is small and picturesque, and there is nothing but the core concept at work: use your sword and bow to kill 16 gigantic monster bosses. Other than tracking down and eliminating these beasts, which are platforming puzzles unto themselves, there are no side missions, no XP, no skill tree, no NPCs to talk to, no crafting, no weapon mods...hell, there are no smaller enemies to dispatch as you traverse the beautiful landscape. The experience is lush in atmosphere and intrigue (not to mention graphics and audio) but minimalist in pretty much every other regard and hearkens back to the end of a simpler digital entertainment era where you got the whole game, up front, on the disc...and the experience was complete, polished, and innovative. I only had to play an hour to know that the rest of this game is amazing because I had the PS2 version, which I also loved, and the people who made this must've loved the 2005 original as well. One of my great shames in gaming history is reaching the last colossus in the PS2 version but never beating it. I did buy the PS3 version, which is a simple upscale/remaster job (and included ICO) but didn't have time for it when so much good current-gen stuff was coming out. But after encountering, and besting, the first monster in this newly built PS4 remake (just the same way I beat him 13 years ago on my old CRT TV), I was smiling uncontrollably. I'm playing on a stock PS4 and the graphics are amazing, the frame rate is buttery smooth, and the main character no longer feels heavy and sluggish, straining against the constraints of old hardware. Will the CoD/2K/GTA/PUBG kids get it? I don't know, but I hope they do give this a try, because it's still a piece of unique, essential gaming. Expand

For years and years, I've been reading nothing but glorious praise for this game, both for the original and the remake. For reasons I can't remember, I never played the PS2 version back when it came out, and then over time the prices for used copies became astronomically high. Now I finally got a PS4 Pro and one of the first games I got was this supposed classic. You know, take a break from Death Stranding and play something less tedious. HAHA.

The only thing that seems to have been updated from the 2005 original are the visuals and some collectibles. That's it. The controls are slippery and imprecise, and the biggest battle you have in this game is not with one of the colossi, but with the god awful camera. It still operates under the mid-2000s dogma of: "I'll give you some pretend control with the right stick, but as soon as you let that f*cker go, I'll just go right back to what I want to do".

Both of these issues are pretty big problems, seeing as the game is basically a puzzle-PLATFORMER.

What I've never seen other reviews mention: Fighting the colossi is basically a stamina-management-game. You fight these guys by climbing on top of them by holding onto fur and conveniently placed pieces of rock, locating their weak spot(s), and then stabbing them with your sword. The thing is: You can really only move when the colossus isn't doing that much. Which is maybe 15% of the time at best, and most of them don't really telegraph when they're going to start moving/shaking either. Which is problematic to say the least, because that's when you gotta hold on for dear life, which drains your stamina and means you cannot move or stab at all. When your stamina hits 0, you fall off the colossus and you get to climb it all over again! Hooray!! So much fun!!!

When you're not fighting a colossus, you're riding around in an empty wasteland of a map looking for the next one. Instead of maybe giving you a marker on your map, you've got to constantly be holding your sword up into the air while riding because it vaguely shows you the right direction to go.

There's next to no incentive for exploring, other than some small collectibles for increasing health and stamina which the game doesn't tell you about. Like it also doesn't really tell you how to save at shrines. It just says: Pray. OK, what's the dedicated pray button again? Would it really be too much hassle to just write "Press R2"? But I digress.

I'd like to give a special shout-out to the moron who programmed the controls for riding the horse. Ocarina of Time had better horse controls and that came out in 1998 for the N64 for crying out loud. Like, should the horse maybe move forward when you push forward on the left stick? Naaah, way too intuitive, let's have the player press Triangle a bunch of times just to get the thing moving at an acceptable speed. Oh what, you wanted to KEEP riding fast? Oh, then you have to keep holding down Triangle like an idiot! The aiming controls with the bow are absolute dogsh*t, too. In a twist of pure genius, you basically have to use your horse in a couple of battles, also combined with shooting your bow from the back of your horse. Best of luck with that, you're going to need it.

On the plus side: The visuals are really nice. Not absolutely amazing in 2019 and especially not after playing Death Stranding, but nice. The music though is pretty generic and repetitive.

All in all, this is one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had in my gaming career. I'm glad I got this on sale and only payed 16€. I'm only on the 7th colossus and I will probably finish the game, but I doubt that I'm going to enjoy it very much. No matter what else the game throws at me, the controls and camera are going to stay sh*tty. At least I'm not the only one who thinks this way, looking at this user review section. I'm just hoping the "The Last Guardian" isn't also such a POS, because I bought that on sale, too.

UPDATE: Played a little further, until the 9th colossus, rage-quit, and deleted the game. The 9th fight involves having the colossus stand in very specific spots in order to even GET A CHANCE to harm him. So you're completely dependent on the boss AI, which doesn't cooperate with you at all. Then, if you do get him to fall over, he falls over with his fur (climbing spot) facing AWAY from you, because why not just make things a little more tedious if we get the chance. Then you get barely enough time to climb on top with the sh*tty controls governing your "hero" that climbs slower than any snaill. And if you don't quite make it because your stamina runs out, you fall off and get to repeat the WHOLE PROCESS all over again. Fun times! Excuse me, but I'm not into torturing myself with badly designed BS. Downgrade from a 3 to a 2. Sorry, but this is an over-hyped piece of garbage and even the 16€ I spent on this were a _colossal_ (haha...) waste of money.

The frame rate on the standard PS4 leaves a lot to be desired and its as if you're playing with an incredible amount of input lag. I do remember it being somewhat hard to control originally and having a low framerate on the PS2 but perhaps these problems were worse than I remembered. That said controlling the game is NOT an enjoyable experience in any way shape or form and in my honest opinion these are problems that should have been fixed or revised for a brand new release. I think the controls are not acceptable and that's that. Some have said that they are intentional and that is were the challenge lies but I think these are controls that could have been improved by leaps and bounds. Seeing the Last Guardian has exactly the same problems I'm more inclined to think it doesn't matter that much to the developers or they are simply incompetent in that aspect. But saying it is an gameplay design decision to have clunky controls doesn't hold up to me. I honestly think the controls of the original PS2 games were not this bad but I could be wrong. Having enjoyed the original game and actually being enthralled with it and played many many hours of it, coming back to it in this remaster doesn't evoke the same feeling I originally had. Expand

This game was a platinum trophy pursuit for me, so it's safe to say I played this one to death. I came to expect a lot having never played it on the older consoles, and heard a lot of good words...

I'm going to be a bit 'edgy' or whatever, and go against the general consensus here, but although I applaud the game for what it does extremely well, which I'll get into, I was left really underwhelmed by something not enough people have commented on but some of the most important things: controls, camera and game mechanics.

I felt controls were really clunky, often unresponsive, often annoying to the extreme. The horse will sometimes not budge. The horse won't vault over obvious things you'd expect to the point you have to kind of 'reverse' yourself out of a stupid angle.

The aiming is terrible and jittery and I'm not just talking about me being rubbish, the aiming is terrible and onerous. To the point of affecting my overall enjoyment of the game which obviously becomes a problem, especially if you're going for those trophies.

The camera is also a problem. I don't consider it the biggest of issues with the game, however I will say it's 'dated' in that, for instance, it won't let you look wherever you want at the right time in all the right places. These camera 'issues' are actually intentional, and I'm sure lifted from the older versions of the game, but seeing as I'm used to more freedom in certain modern open world titles, this camera is basically dated.

So with the part most people will down vote this for out of the way... the good stuff. The game looks incredible. The sound and music, gorgeous. The boss fights are monumental. I loved solving the puzzles and seeing where the story would go in the end. To this end I was glad to having never spoiled anything going into it, as let's say there's a good twist. The game is definitely creative, and deserving some of its praise for this alone. It was clearly ahead of the curve in many ways back in the days of PS2, but I'm not going to let that cloud the fact it has glaring problems. Also if you do all the challenges, and do the bosses on all the difficulties you get some cool extras like concept art to enjoy.

In closing, it's a shame the janky controls and some of the mechanics, such as aiming and horse control want to bring my score on this down. I was looking to give this a strong 8 or 9, but instead I think a 6 is about right for this.

This game can get boring at times, however, the story, music, visuals, and fighting the Colossi make this game what it is. Each colossus is completely unique and if I had to compare it to something I would say their like the Divine beasts is The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. I love this game and I would most definitely play it again.

Decent game in terms of graphics and atmosphere. I didn't have high expectation on the graphics but the game really surprised me on that front. I did, however, have trouble on the controls. It is simply frustrating to drop from the colossi once and again just to climb back up again and do the simply stabbing trick. The combats themselves lack versatility and the plot should have more depth.

Shadow of the colossus to me is the most overrated game in existence right now. Its not bad at all but the greatest games for me are the ones not hurt by the times. There's never a bad time for some super Mario world or Skyrim. Shadow of the colossus simply doesn't hold up to the times. If you never tried it. buy it when its on sale but if its full price, don't. Quite simply, this game is not fun whatsoever. The horse navigation makes no reasonable sense. Accelerating and decelerating the horse takes several seconds, and turning is either too slow or too fast. The bulk of colossus battles are climbing up onto them to find their weak points. But this becomes an absolute chore because of the absolute poor control scheme and it's similarly atrocious camera. Often times I would fall off if I let go of R2 for even a split second and would then have to climb my way up again. What should be a fun battle against a giant majestic beast quickly devolves into an uninspiring repetitive task. I tried to like this game, I really did. But it's just not fun. 4/10. Expand

Still, I just didn't feel compelled enough to keep trying, and the way the game is designed, there's not much to do aside facing those single enemies.

The scenaries are gorgeous, and the battles fairly epic and rewarding if you have the patience and desire to overcome them, but to some of us it might get boring or uninteresting as the only real thing you do is defeat colossus.

This game feels like they salvaged what they could out of a fatally drained budget and sold it like having so little content was the plan all along.

With the last bosses it did get more interesting, picked up a bit of suspense and finally the ending did make up for a lot of narrative that was missing most of the game. It is an experience, but as a game, it's over after 6-8 hours, and that only because you have to repeatedly travel over long and empty distances and if you go hunting a few useless lizards and fruits in a partially good looking, but mostly very bland looking environment.

You can get probably get a bit more challengeing things to do and some new equipment in New Game+, but why would you really want to...?

There is a very minor connection to The Last Guardian (basically in the setting, the climbing, and the general feel), but that is a very different "story" in quite a few aspects.

The solutions for the fights (or interaction with the world) are not consistent - sometimes environment is destructible sometimes not, so it's often more trial and error than anything else. After finding out what to do I finding myself more face palming than feeling smart.

You have basically 16 gimmick fights, that's it. I could live with that if the fights where really good but too many are not. Pretty short too, took me about 9 hours to complete.

The original game has been in my "to play" list for a long time, but I'm glad I waited and experienced the PS4 version instead. I feel jealous for Shadow of the Colossus fans, because this version is basically a dream come true as far as remakes go. The game looks absolutely stunning, even rivaling the PS4's own titles. Some people could argue that they should have implemtented more quality of life improvements, or even additional content, but honestly, this is exactly how a remake should be in my opinion: faithful as possible to the original work, but making it look better than ever.

Shadow of the Colossus is a game with a very simple but compelling premise: hunt down sixteen gigantic monsters that act as bosses spread all over the world. Boss fights are one of my favorite aspects in any video game, so naturally I was inmediately captivated by this premise. At first I had some trouble getting used to the controls and phyisics, but eventually got better at it. The controlls are clunky, but this is part of what makes the game challenging. Of course, that also means that you'll be set for some frustrating moments, especially during the first few hours. This is a game that often demands patience from the player, so I can see it being difficult to enjoy for some people. It is clearly not a game for the mainstream public.

But no matter how many frustrating moments you'll experience with the controlls, the game will keep you coming back for the epic and spectacular moments that take place fighting each of the colossi. Being a game designed entirely around boss fights, you can expect the fights to be more elaborate and time-consuming than your average video game bosses. Each colossi is like a puzzle, where you have to find the way to their weak points, and then execute your attacks while managing your stamina. Overall, the bosses are creative, varied, and for the most part entertaining from a gameplay standpoint. From an artistic standpoint, some of the battles are simply breathtaking. In this sense, Shadow of the Colossus is unrivaled in the gaming landscape. Of course, not all of the colossi are on the same level of quality. But overall the fights are very memorable and satisfying.

There isn't much to this game apart from the boss fights. The rest of the experience consists of traveling the vast, (intentionally) empty open world in search for the colossi. There are some collectibles and a much appreciated time-attack mode that let's you replay any fight, but I didn't really bother with any of those. And finally, the game has a story, which is very minimalistic and in reality, it only exists in the beginning and the end. The finale is extremely memorable.

The art direction for this game is very solid and well done. The landscapes are beautiful, and the colossi look spectacular, especially in this 1080p remake. The music is sensational, consisting mostly of orchestral pieces, with a few exceptions. Though I often find orchestral music in games like this to be very samey and forgettable, this is not the case for Shadow of the Colossus. All of the songs are very memorable, and the composer was clearly a very talented person.

In the end, this is a game that anyone who likes epic boss fights should play at least once. Again, it is not your typical adventure game and I would not recommend it to the general public. But I have to commend the developers for commiting to such a novel and bold idea, because the result is a game that despite its shortcomings, will always be rememberd by everyone.

Storywise, it’s simple and light. Don’t expect to find an extremely developed scriptwriting, but some mysteries are good enough to make the player wanting a few answers.

That’s all for what I liked about SOTC. There are also many things I didn’t like. First, let me start with the absolute worst thing in this game: the horse handling. It is HORRIBLY TERRIBLE. I don’t care that it’s originally a PS2 game. If you remaster/remake it (2 times), you correct the obvious bad stuff. It’s not acceptable to « remake » a game and to offer your players such a disastrous experience when it comes to the handling of the horse. Moreover, the frame rate is bad. It’s too slow and I cannot believe that they cannot make such an old game a 60fps on PS4. That’s another very negative point. On top of that, there are lots of camera problems and I’ve found myself stuck several times because of bugs or gameplay imperfections. Disappointing for such a light-content game.

More subjectively, I found the game slow to begin. I also don’t like this fictional language thing. Globally, I got tired after a while so I forced myself to finish the last third. Nevertheless, it’s worth playing for its uniqueness and because I have rarely seen such advanced boss fighting (if you can call them like that).

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
