The Talent tree, the side missions and the hunting and crafting are not the same as Uncharted.
Tomb Raider 2 is a superb game in any way. The only reason I do not give it 10 is the difficulty. I played on the hardest and still did only die when I miss jumped and almost never in combat. That was a pain in the ass to return to camp for miss jumping. The first game was quite hard on the toughest difficulty but this was quite easy.

If you enjoyed the first game then you will enjoy this game. It's just unfortunate that this game was delayed by a year and released in Fall 2016 (I feel that the game isn't getting the attention it deserves because of all of the great games coming out).

Like many here I loved the first Tomb Raider game. Although the setting is now frosty Siberia It plays more or less the same. Unfortunately I found the experience largely forgettable, as it lacked the "wow" moments from the first game. It's pretty much the same thing, a solid experience, just not as exciting as the original.

It's a diminishing return, though, which makes me worry a third installment will have to try a lot harder to impress.

The story this time around is much more predictable and cookie cutter - if you can't see what's coming you're just not paying attention. Lara herself is really not quite as interesting as she used to be, with her only growth as a character is the coming to terms with her father's mysterious suicide, offering a lot less than its predecessor. Gameplay is what you'd expect, with all too familiar set piece moments and gunplay/platforming. RPG elements are back, adhering to the school of "forgot every little thing I knew just in time for the sequel"; and there's the odd design choice again where Lara can encounter droves of armed enemies only to ever receive specific weapons she already encountered much later, so long as it's part of a cutscene.

Excitement from this game is greatly diminished since the original. Set pieces are identical often, puzzles are even easier this time around, enemies behave exactly the same and even colorful and painful looking death scenes are somewhat absent.

If you're seriously hurting for more Tomb Raider, it isn't awful. But if you want something a little more groundbreaking and exciting then just more of the same and not quite as good - you can afford waiting for it to hit the bargain bin or give it a rent.

My first few hours in the game was great but after a few more I started to feel as if I was playing the same game that I had played several years before but without the gripping story that pulled me in.

The story: I personally found it hard to really care for any of the characters in this game including Lara which is a shame because the developers could have really made a great story out of this game. For example, the characters just come in go in this game. I found it hard to finish this game and once I did I literally had no desire to replay the game like I did so many other times like the original TR.

Graphics: They are good, however a lot of the textures are used again and again throughout the game since the game is extremely repetitive.

Overall, I would recommend this game on sale but not full price for it. Most of the DLC that is included felt cheap and short. Though exploring Lara's mansion was interesting it was really short and should have been more in depth. The story and characters just didn't have enough life to them to develop or care for them.

Game Play is great, environments are beautiful, character animations are top notch. AI is pretty basic, I would suggest playing on harder difficulties for any hardcore gamer out there. My only real gripe with this game is the story. Unlike the last Tomb Raider game that came out in 2013, which had an amazing story, Rise of the Tomb Raider pretty much steals the plot right off of Uncharted 2. Cmon writers need to get a little more original then copy and paste.
I finished the core game and I am making my way through the DLC. Great purchase if you haven't played it already! Don't let this one slip by you, you won't regret it.

Other negatives for me are the way game "holds your hand" when trying to work out where to go , or what to find. with one press of a button it will "light up" the way for you, and things you need to gather "glow" so you dont miss them. These options can be turned off of course, but its too easy to use the option when you get stuck., and i miss that part of Tomb Raider, hence the lower score. But this is a great game. Go get it.

A good game but Square Enix should have done much better. It seems too equal to TR Definite Edition and lacks graphics improvements. And this problem is bigger after playing Uncharted 4... The variety is still annoying and repetitive. The Croft´s House VR experience is very interesting promising great things next times with this new technology.

What I have to say is this game is not worth $59.99. Not only because it's one year old due to the Xbox One 1 year timed exclusivity, but because of the season pass included. Firstly, the game was advertised on TV as having over 50 hours of gameplay, but the story campaign is only about 5-8 hours long. My play time was 21 hours and 27 minutes with 100% game completion including collectibles meaning the other 10 or so hours were just hunting animals to upgrade skills and gear, collectibles as well as solving puzzles in optional tombs. I felt the vanilla version is worth about $39.99. Here, it's $59.99 with the inclusion of the season pass on the disc.

And so here's where I evaluate the season pass. For the extra $20, only about 2 of the add-on were worth playing for me: Baba Yaga and Croft Manor. And even those missions each were only about 2 to 2.5 hours long. Endurance/co-op endurance, I would never have chose to purchase these. And the Cold Darkness Awakened, played 3 min. of it last night and pulled the disc out right away. I did get the Platinum, but you're required to achieve a par score to gold star each stage. That's just not replay value. It does provide a different experience, but you can really tell it's a really cheap way by the developers to extend the game and make you hold on to it longer before it gets passed on as a used game.

I'm getting rid of this. My experience won't necessarily be the same as yours and I'm sure there are others that will enjoy all the extra content that you're required to buy now. I'm just glad I paid only $40, but I wouldn't have paid $60.

Now we have the sequel to that game, and while it is safe to call this a good game, I wished it would've been more "fresh". After all it is literally more of the same of the 2013 game, but with a new story/characters and a tad-bigger open world. First the positives. The action set pieces in this game are wonderful and a treat to play when it triggers. The open world is bigger and there are more tombs to explore, collectibles to collect, an even a few side quests thrown in to mix things up a little. I enjoyed all of these elements, although to an extent. The rpg elements and general gameplay are carbon copy of the 2013 version, so in my book it's also good. And that's when my complaints about this game arise. There is literally nothing new about this game, except for a couple gadgets and story which in my opinion was generic, made worse by the fact there were no character development in this game at all; everyone you meet was just to push you toward the next objective. The game felt soul-less in the story and character standpoint, and my second time around with Lara, I realized how devoid of personality she has throughout the game. Without a good story, and game play that felt actually like the same in 2013, not to mention the animals and rpg level up system is about an 90% copy and paste job from 2013, I just wished there were more new things in this game. It's an bigger open world, but we do the exact same thing in the 2013 reboot. Yes, there are more tombs, but they were all very simple, ok at best. The worst part is the rewards were unsatisfying. To end, it may seem like I hated this game, but I enjoyed it, although not to the extent of an uncharted or even its 2013 counterpart. I just really wished it added on from the 2013 game for this one, and seeing as I didn't enjoy the story, the game play just felt too similar for me to enjoy it as much as I did in 2013. Probably a high 7 in my book. Expand

Lara Croft has returned to PlayStation with her 20 Year Celebration edition of Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix’s Rise of the Tomb Raider. The follow up to 2013’s Tomb Raider, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next installment of the rebooted franchise, and now after a year-long wait, PS4 owners can experience Lara’s next adventure; does Rise of the Tomb Raider live up to the twenty year legacy of this award winning franchise, or is it a failed expedition that could derail the progress its predecessor set?
    The Good
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration is packaged with concept art from the creators and fan art submitted in celebration of twenty years of Lara Croft. Along with this collection of art, the game comes with every add-on available during the first year of its release, and new content as well. This includes VR support for “Blood Ties”, new “Ultimate Survivor” difficulty mode, new outfit and gun inspired by Tomb Raider III, 5 classic Lara skins, Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, Endurance Mode, Cold Darkness Awakened, 12 outfits, 7 weapons, and 35 Expedition cards. With all of the additional content offered, players can feel good about paying full price for a game that is technically a year old; in the end you actually save money compared to those who bought the Xbox 1 copy last year and then purchased all of the subsequent DLC afterwards.
The story in this game is a proper continuation from where we last left off. Players see the aftermath of the previous adventure where a survivor was born, and the ripples it created in Lara’s life. The adventure progresses at a steady pace, and no plot-point is left unresolved.
The emphasis on resource gathering is a welcome addition, forcing players to hunt, forage, and look for supplies to upgrade their weapons and gear. Players must also gather collectables to increase their knowledge of ancient languages in order to find valuable artifacts. This game keeps the player from having anything handed to them, forcing them to earn the valuables they seek.
    The Bad
The inability to blind-fire from behind cover becomes a problem as the amount of combat Lara is subjected to increases; when enemies are both running to your position and firing from a distance, the battles can feel aggravating, especially for those playing on survivor or ultimate survivor mode. The brutality seems toned down compared to the last installment, and while many may enjoy the lack of graphic visuals, it was a major component of the rebooted franchise – this isn’t your old Tomb Raider game, and this isn’t Lara Croft as you’ve experienced her before.
Lack of dual-wielding pistols; at the conclusion of Tomb Raider, Lara defeats the final boss by firing two pistols simultaneously as an homage to the classic weapons of choice that have populated the series since the first game. While this is about the beginnings of Lara Crofts journey, this installment didn’t even offer a nudge to the classic weapons. The end of the last game insinuated that we would see a development in Lara’s arsenal, but players are left with more of the same from the previous installment.
    Rating
10 – Rise of the Tomb Raider is a welcome addition to an already amazing franchise, not only continuing the journey set out from the 2013 reboot, but standing on its own as an excellent Tomb Raider game. This Lara Croft is a very human character, and while she isn’t the dual-wielding bad ass she was in previous years, it’s clear to see that she is well on her way. The 20 Year Celebration Edition for PS4 is the complete experience and then some, providing everything a gamer could want and more in a full-priced game. This game is the reason for owning a PS4.

Now let me start by saying this, I LOVED the 2013 reboot. And as I head into Rise of the Tomb Raider i was extremely interested in exploring more of this new Lara Croft.

But what what this game gives us...is more of the same with a few minor gameplay tweaks. Let me stop you there, of course you can make that argument against the Uncharted series, but the Uncharted series at least makes the effort to tell a better more engaging story time and time again.

While playing Rise of the Tomb Raider, I found myself growing more and more frustrated with the story being told. I had no reason to care about Lara's paper thin relationship with her father. I had no reason to care about Lara's motivations to clear her family name. And I had no reason to care about the characters she met along the way.

They could have told a much better story if Lara was much more skeptical about this expedition. In the small snippets of information we gather from her relationship with her father it sounds like he was extremely absent minded and neglected his daughter a lot. There is a lot of missed opportunity for great story telling. A much more character driven story could have been told if Lara throughout this journey was coming to the realization that her father was deluded and the divine source didn't actually exist...all the while being followed by this shadowy organization (Trinity) whose leader is just as deluded as her father (only to then be proven wrong, find the divine source at the end of the game and realize her dad was right). But no...right from the get go Lara is all in from the beginning and she never wavers.

Not only is the story extremely straight forward, we learn nothing new about Lara herself. This woman has absolutely no personality at all. When you're directly competing against Uncharted and the ultra charming Nathan Drake, you need to make sure we care about your character.

Now the minute to minute gameplay is fun. But not much has changed when compared to what we got in 2013. Now i typically wouldn't care about this...but as I said with Uncharted...if you fail to tell a more compelling story than last time then it's a lot easier to notice what changed in the gameplay and what didn't.

So we got the same gameplay and a much weaker story. That is why i'm giving this game a 5. It was extremely average. I pales in comparison to the Uncharted series where the adventure is always exciting and the characters you meet along the way are memorable.

Overall, however, I'd say that while it's really really close, I do prefer the previous game just slightly. Obviously it lacks in some areas, but it felt more grounded and personal. Rise of the Tomb Raider certainly amps up the action and the set pieces are more interesting, and more complex, but it doesn't quite match the introduction of the character, which was more mysterious, gritty, and focused more on survival and surprise. I also feel like the original had a stronger musical score. Rise of the Tomb Raider uses some dynamically generated music, which is a cool idea, but I don't feel like the score is as powerful or emotional. The ending also didn't feel quite as "epic" as the original did either.

That being said, these are all ultimately nitpicks as I gave both games the same rating. While it doesn't quite reach the original in some areas, it definitely surpasses it in others. The visuals are more stunning and fit the current gen much more than the original, although still not quite at their full potential, considering the game was designed with compatibility with the Xbox 360 in mind. However, the world is far more interesting to look at, with a wide variety of different locations and set pieces that continue to amaze. The gameplay is much deeper than the original with more weapons, upgrades, and a deeper crafting system in play. For people who care about gameplay more than anything else, they will like this game much better than the original. However for me, the story, setting, tone, and supporting characters just weren't as good as the last game, although the new character Jacob was very well done, and the mythology behind the game was much more deeply thought out. This game also has much larger "mini open world" spaces that have tons of side missions and collectibles, which add a lot of replayability.

Ultimately, compared to the last game there are things that make it better, and other things that don't quite match up. Overall, I would say they both rank at approximately the same level of quality. That being said, there are two games this game will likely be compared to a lot, and those are Uncharted 2 and 4. People will compare it to Uncharted 2 for showing how a sequel compares to the original. In that sense, I think Uncharted 2 was a much more impressive improvement over the original. Uncharted 4 will also be compared to this game for a more current-gen comparison. However, in that comparison I also have to give it to Uncharted. Uncharted 4's visuals and gameplay were far more impressive than RotTR, and Uncharted 4's story and musical score was just absolutely perfect, but both were solid games.

In the end, if you liked the 2013 Tomb Raider game, you will like this one just as much. Some may like it better, some may like the other better, but they're both great games that deserve all the success they can get. I can't wait to play this a few more times to find all it has to offer. I also plan on checking out the DLC soon, including the VR mission, which was a nice touch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm gonna give this game a 9. Because of some bugs, mostly clipping issues and the relatively dumb AI. Other than that, this game is absolutely amazing. It was sort of an impulse buy for me because i had an RPG burn-out and i hadn't played a Tomb Raider game in a long time. Also didn't play the one from 2013. Seeing the positive reviews, i expected it to be good and that i would like it. But it's even better than i thought. It looks gorgeous, the combat is fun, the tombs and levels are incredibly well designed. The story is not super and a bit cliché. But still it's good enough and told in a way you will feel connected. The upgrades and skills make it even more addictive. And the extra dlc and content certainly makes it worth its price. Amazing game that i see myself putting a lot more hours into it then expected. Against my better judgement, I didn't wait to buy this used and went full impulse buy because I loved the first one so much. I didn't want to spoil it for myself so I avoided watching it on YT and spoilers. I've just finished and am going through it again in hopes that I will find it more enjoyable the second time around, but I can't help feeling like it's missing something pretty substantial. First, what I enjoyed:

    - Croft Manor - Very well done, decent storyline, creepy effects done well. I enjoyed this little side story more than the regular game.
    - Premise for the story, the mythology behind the main plot was intriguing
    - The animals
    - Baba Yaga - Totally enjoyable and in line with my expectations. Decent little story even though I guessed the plot pretty early.
    - No QTE. THANK YOU!
    - The main antagonist was well written and balanced.
    - The tombs has rewards of substance, unlike the first game
    - Lara's character was obviously more mature after Yamatai, I appreciated the character development

    What I didn't like:

    - When collecting ammo or other loot, have to press square twice before it picks it up. I thought it was only my controller but apparently it's an issue others are having as well. While it is merely annoying when scouting, it is infuriating when fighting.
    - Very, very little content and time spent in at the first location. Story/plot was barely engaging and pretty cursory.
    - Environment was pretty bland for both Syria and Siberia
    - Getting additional weapons felt like it took forever. I don't know if that is really the case, or whether I noticed it because of the lack on engaging story
    - I loved the main ally. Unfortunately he's the only one I ended caring about. Didn't really connect with the rest of the group despite talking to everyone.
    - Combat wasn't as interesting or exciting save for a couple of locations.
    - Many of the puzzles were just boring and tedious
    - Really didn't care for having to craft the special ammo or being in control of the lighting in dark places. I find these to be artificial constructs and just end up being annoying and adding nothing to the experience

All in all, I would have spend $30-$40 on this game. It's not as good as the first one, but definitely better than Uncharted 4, which was a HUGE disappointment, IMO. I'm not sure if this is a keeper yet, but I am definitely going to buy the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition for the PS4 because I LOVE that game.

It's been awhile since I wrote a review, but I feel compelled to speak on this game's behalf__ it's that GOOD!
Ingenious level and tomb design, exemplary balance of adventure, combat, and progression, and refreshingly it's cerebral as well as visceral. The artistic design is peerless; it's gorgeous. Have fun!

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a phenomenal game. I enjoyed the first one, 2013's Tomb Raider, immensely, and Rise of the Tomb Raider takes that structure and fleshes it out with incredible detail. Graphically, the game is gorgeous. Environments are a delight to see and explore, and Lara herself looks amazing. There were many times playing the game where I was just stunned by how beautiful everything looks.

Story and gameplay-wise, Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn't disappoint. It's a thrill to play, and the play mechanics don't ever get in the way of your enjoyment. It doesn't quite capture the brutal, raw feeling that I loved so much about the first one, but I also appreciate that this one isn't just a rehash. It's its own game, and in spite of all the similarities with the first one, it feels very fresh.

Overall, I can't recommend this game highly enough. It's well worth your time and money to play.

I went through a mixed bag of emotions when playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4. At first I was blown away by the visuals and the music, but after putting a good number of hours into playing I became very aware of a glaring issue.

The game suffers from a sever case of input lag. When pressing a button you will find that the action happens about half a second after, which isn't too bad in platforming situations as you can adjust, but it really falls down during combat sections.

For the record, I'm playing on Survival difficulty which removes aim assist, but the camera controls are so clunky it's borderline unplayable during said sections. It's been a long time since I've been so frustrated at a game, but with unresponsive controls like these it's not hard to see why. Just trying to slightly adjust your aim is a tedious battle, especially in fast and frenetic combat.

I don't understand how the developers got the 2013 reboot so right, only to get the sequel so, so wrong with control issues as bad as this. I went into this game wanting to love it as much as I did the previous one, but I can't bring myself to carry on until these issues are fixed.

I feel it would be disingenuous giving this game a higher score as it's beyond time that games are allowed to slide by due to pretty graphics, amazing voice acting or purely due to brand loyalty. A game should stand up on it's gameplay alone and Rise of the Tomb Raider falls flat.

    A Step Back From Greatness
Tomb Raider 2013 is one of my most favorite games ever.. Needless to say I was excited to play the sequel..
Unfortunately, they dropped the gritty tone of the original to chase uncharted….
Lara sets out to uncover a mystery her father was mocked for..
This game starts out in the Serbian mountains and the majority of the game keeps you in the snow covered mountains…
And of course there are bad guys after the same artifact you are..
    So youre not alone…
The tomb raider reboot introduced a crafting system which has been brought back, but this time feels much more in the background..
You can gather items and hunt animals for materials to craft bandages and upgrade your weapons…
But none of this is forced…
And much like the past game you upgrade your weapons at a campfire, which also acts as a fast travel point and a place for you to spend your skill points as you level up…
Rise of the tomb raider feels much more linear this time around..
The world doesn’t really feel as connected as the original…
Its for the most part a linear path that you traverse with climbing aces and ropes..
The game feels much more like assassins creed this time around because of this…
It gives uncharted 4 a run for its money with how much climbing you actually do here…
As well as the series as a whole during the few epic chase sequences qhich are easily some of my favorite moments in the entire game…
When you aren’t climbing there are a few openish sections you can explore but the mistake the original made is back as well with secrets being locked off until you progress further in the story to unlock the needed tool and come back...
This is a cheap tactic to prolong gameplay hours…
but more so its frustrating and ironically discourages exploration…
Why look around when 1 in 2 areas is going to tell me to come back later?
I might as well just ignore everything and run forward..
This is what I ended up doing..
Fortunately rise of the tomb raider is gorgeous, and traversing the parquor sections and solving environmental puzzles old fans will be happy to see returned outside of just being secrets is a great deal of fun…
And the 3rd person shooter combat feels decently nice, its not uncharted good, but its passable.. you have the option to stealth or shoot your way through most sections… you can also dodge attacks and counter….
The puzzle pieces are all here for this to be a masterpiece of a game…
except theyre missing the center piece… the one thing that makes all of this come together and work for uncharted in such a beautiful way…
    And that’s character…
Theres not a single well written character in this entire game…
    This includes lara…
The original this wasn’t so.. the game felt so real and you felt so vulnerable.. not only having to survive enemies but the environment.. I cared the entire way.. here however youre just a girl Nathan drake with 0 personality…
Which ultimately makes this feel like just a generic third person shooter experience…
There was no reason to stray away from the unique gritty adventure they had going on with tomb raider 2013, but they did and the feel of the game suffered for it
And Im not sure if this story was game of thrones inspired, but it felt pretty copy and paste making every turn so predictable, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if again the characters had character, but they didn’t.. I wasn’t invested in the story at all…
The PS4 20 year celebration version also comes with all of the dlc…
Endurance which can be played either single or co op where youre tasked with surviving by eating food and gathering resources.. Very fun idea, but the challenges for the trophies wont unlock unless they are an active challenge, which if youre trophy hunting kills all reason to continue if there are no more trophy related challenges to do…
cold darkness which is a stealth zombie dlc where you have to infiltrate a research base for a chemical weapon
as well as Baba Yaga and Blood ties which ill be reviewing on their own as they are each about an hour long expansion with their own stories..
While I do wish the characters were better written in Rise of The Tomb Raider, I still feel is a quality experience, well worth your money if youre a fan of action adventure…
I Give Rise of The Tomb Raider..

Why can't I just buy the core game for $20?

What if after the core game, I am good, and don't need/want any additional content. What is the worth of the DLCs and others that I will not play? As a PS4 consumer, I don't have the option to just have the core game and decide later if I would like additional content. Why make it a bundle, just to justify the $60 price tag.

Can you believe you can shoot a rifle to put a near enemy down like you are using a shoot gun? Yes you really can do that because the weapon system is so unbalanced and without any necessity of selecting in different situations. Just blow every far and near enemies with your god blessed rifle, babie!

Do you believe you can kill any legendary fierce animals with repeated X evading and △ fighting back?Yes, you can do that becaues there is no tatics in that. I eliminated 6 wolves in a cave with this single move, you get hurt from time to time but not a single blow can really waste you, so you will kill'em all just with this stupid move.

Sure there are some shining moments in this game, but from my point of view, 9-10 is not a score this game deserves. If I am a new tomb comer I can give it 8, but as a tomb raider serial player, when comparing with the exciting tomb raider 2013(I will give 9 to that game), I wll give this game 6-7, which I think is proper.
