Where the first game was an amazing action-packed adventure that blended old and new together perfectly this game is a slow trudging experience trying to coffee Uncharted rather than being its own thing. Lara went from being an absolutely beautiful badass to being an annoying whining little princess in this game. The overall experience feels far too long there's hardly any combats most of your time is jumping around and solving stupid puzzles. Expand

Great game. Playability is really nice. Graphics and story are nice. The upgraded rythme is well done.
Yes, some levels looks 'the same'. It's a slow pace game with a lot of stealth action. I really enjoyed it.

Much better than uncharted 4 while basically being the same game. Much more choice and the game isn’t nearly as linear as uncharted so it feels like you’re discovering something instead of being led through a single path

Play one of the new Tomb Raiders played them all type of vibe. More of the same as the first game. Yeah it looks nice, but the "game" alternates between overtly scripted BS and/or QTE events for that cinematic look. Or copy/paste survival mechanics in small limited zones. The combat was easy I hardly used any health. Some of the jumping sections kind of glitched out now and again.

I'd rather watch this as Lara Croft the animated movie. It is boring in its predictability gameplay wise. I had the chance to play this before (and the third game) via family, but I passed. This one was a free drop this year on the paid PS+ services.

I did like this game. However, when I got closer to the end of the game, something just felt off. It got to the point where I would rush through the game just to get to the end. Other than that, A good sequel to the rebooted Tomb Raider series

Rise of The Tomb Raider is a decent sequel that manages to do everything a sequel should techincally, it manages to fix gameplay problems, gives you more options, takes you to new and (kind of) interesting locations and it serves as an evolution of it's predecessor.
So why did I end up feeling like the game was just "Fairly good", despite liking most of the gameplay, the locations and the mechanics. Easy - the story and characters. The game's story is filled to the brim with every Indiana Jones-esque cliche known to man. There isn't a single plot point which you don't see coming a mile away, and the few twists it tries to pull never get the chance to make an impact because of how little you care for the characters and what happens to them. Not wanting to see Lara fall to her death aside, I couldn't give less of a **** about what she felt, what she wanted or the whole "father-daughter" plot they did (I swear I zoned out every time that came up).

RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER: 20 YEAR CELEBRATION is a great game gameplay-wise and you can have a lot of fun with it, but it just feels hollow, it lacks any emotional pull. You'll find yourself trailing off into side-activities constantly because they just feel far more interesting than the campaign itself.
That is why I'm rating it a very light 7/10./

However on higher difficulty level: enemies know exactly where you are at almost any point in time, making stealth around almost impossible. Also I like the more cinematic approach with the camera rather then the static from behind of the originals.
Graphics 9,5: great environment, breathtaking architecture, many times at aw, especially the tracks in the snow and the bright light effect at the end of tunnels/caves.
Story 9: although subjective; I'm a huge fan of Indiana Jones the Last Crusade and it's story. This is quite similar; be it in a more snowy environment. Jonah from the prequel makes a rentree which I liked. Lara seems to have character development since her last venture and generally is less scared/fearful of what happens around her. Also the twists and turns of secondary characters are original (mainly Anna and Jacob). That same goes for bringing back the Croft Manor from the original and make that into it's own story, separate from the main storyline, I really loved that! The way they do puzzles here is extremely original, having to combine clues and really study them instead of the usual jumping pulling levers puzzles.
Conclusion: 9 Although there are a few things I didn't mention before, the game isn't without a few bugs here and there. Being a kid from the 90's it doesn't really bother me as long as it's kept to a minimum, as it does. Definitely recommend the game to anyone who considers it!

This game gives me the same feels as the Uncharted games: I like the idea, but in the end they are too much fighty and too less exploration/platforming/puzzling. So just a 6 from me for that.

When you have Lara climbing the next cookie cutter tree to grab feathers to make more arrows, the game feels like an uninspired chore.

The game is actually quite small and quite short. I think Square Enix needs to know that I am fine with that. In an era when you can play a Fortnite or a Destiny free all day every day, I admire quality over quantity in my single player games. What Rise of the Tomb Raider does to make itself look bigger is add an unrewarding crafting mechanic. You can collect resources such as wood, feathers, and metal chunks to upgrade your weapons and make ammunition. If you ever thought Indiana Jones would be better if had to McGuyver every bullet, then Rise of the Tomb Raider is the game for you. The game also throws in optional missions and exotic animal hunts that reuse areas so Square Enix can further pad playtime. (We know that Lara grew up with privilege, but does she have to flaunt it by hunting down endangered species?). This might be fine in a Red Dead game with giant, open areas. The areas in Rise of the Tomb Raider are laughably tiny.

The game also throws in mandatory battles as roadblocks. The game seems to revel in its stealth mechanics. Lara can sneak up behind enemies to choke them to death or shoot them with a silent arrow. That is until one enemy sees her, and then everyone has X-ray vision to know her position. In some scripted sequences, enemies drop from the ceiling in a pre-alerted state. My gripe with the first Tomb Raider reboot is that the game went full Call of Duty too often and that gripe extends to this sequel. Worst of all, the gunplay is incredibly easy because of how many hits Lara can take in the regular mode. I started using the bow to fight enemies because it added some challenge. Eventually I rushed nearly all enemies to beat them to death with Lara’s climbing ax. The final boss fight is the culmination of all of the terrible combat design in this game. No spoilers except to say that the game mechanics will betray Lara.

The tombs in the game are a mixed bag. Like the Uncharted games, there are puzzles to solve. Unlike Uncharted, the puzzles are all optional. After feeling like I was playing on easy mode, I stopped raiding tombs. All of them are simple physics puzzles that involve climbing and pulling things with rope arrows. There is no need to consult a notebook like in Uncharted. None of the puzzles felt cool.

The star of the game is the environment even if most of the climbable surfaces seem to float in midair rather than part of the natural surface of a cliff face. As Lara climbs these surfaces, they break and fall away in a perpetual rockslide/earthquake. Lara looks light but she must weigh over 2000 pounds, because well worn paths fall to pieces when she steps on them. Later in the game, Lara passes buy armies of deadly killers and they march in unison and she climbs covertly. I think in a better game, Lara would move about silently more often and wouldn’t need to carry an arsenal of weapons on her back.

The story is a non-starter. Square Enix seems to meld the story of Batman with Indiana Jones as Lara goes on adventures because of her dead father. Unlike Batman, she ruthlessly kills about 100 people. Lara even makes Indiana Jones look like a pacifist. There is thing and even though the bad guys don’t know were to find the thing and Lara does, the bad guys will always be one step ahead of Lara. This time around, Lara also makes new allies, and annoyingly apologetic as they keep threatening to kill her. My main complaint is with the tribe of Siberian people that all speak perfect English with a British accent. Lara never considers this to be suspicious.

All-in-all, Rise of the Tomb Raider is mediocre game. On PS4, it is far outclassed by Uncharted 4 in every respect. If you have played Uncharted 4, I recommend playing it again rather than playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. The 20 Year Celebration edition adds a short “Gone Home” style scavenger hunt in Lara’s mansion. This is a nice bonus but adds little to the overall experience. Rise of the Tomb Raider is also infected with micro transactions for score attacks style game modes. I honestly do not know why anyone would keep playing this game after the story ends. I know Rise of the Tomb Raider was not a big seller for Square Enix. One reason for poor sales was their dumb decision to have time exclusivity on Xbox. Another was their inability to make good games.

Story is ...okay. The problem is that we the PlayStation players have so many similar games like this that have better story. There is not enough character development to connect with previous and future games. So I could not care for others apart from Lara. Ending dragged a lot. So called “ending boss battle” is just as cliche as you can imagine. And final cutscene clearly sets up "sequel".
There is definitely replayability value but not very high. They were some tedious puzzles, but I had to look up how to solve only once. I am glad that PlayStation gave it for free on PS plus, as I would’ve never bought it really, not a big fan of TR but am a fan of 3rd person games like this. Game is worth it for a heavy discount price I think (or free).
For 2020 the graphics hold up, they are not NextGen but they’re good enough. I would’ve loved to have 60 FPS, but even without it it’s definitely playable.
Bugs: few bugs exist, reload of checkpoint helped.

The dialogues are so bad that i think the writers have 12 years old each, and at no moment i even care about the characters. Even Lara is a shallow character. The bad guys are just so cartoony that the main villain even has a big scar on his face, a eastern european religious fanatic that only wants to kill to get an artifact that gives eternal life. Yea, thats new.
Then you have the gameplay. The gameplay is clumsy. At best. Its not terrible, but i would not play this game for fun. The IA and the combats arent really funny, especially because (at least on ps4) is actually painful to aim. The map is full of markers (like a Ubi game) but there is little reward to collect everything. Some of the documents contain stories and some artifacts you find can give you some information about the world you are in. That was the best part, but the other 500 chests containing paper, deer skins or other materials you could get by playing the game, are just there to make the game look longer.

The only good part is the artistic one. I like the map, its not great, but the ruins of the bizantine city are just great. The artifacts are also great, and you can notice they put a lot of work in the map design.

So, in conclusion: Terrible story, basic gameplay and great artistic direction. This is not Uncharted, even when it tries so hard. Play this only if you want to explore the ruins of bizantine cities, soviet camps and siberian forests. There is nothing more of value in this game. It can be fun at moments, and tedious in others. Overall an average game. Clearly overrated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Started off quite promising but got boring very quickly. Didn't care for any of the characters or the story to be honest, so much so that when Konstantin was spouting whatever his dying words were I didn't even wait for him to finish before blasting him in the face.

The traversal aspect was fairly good although it became more of a chore after a while. Speaking of chores, nothing let's this game down more than its combat, it is so painfully awful that I dreaded every encounter. I started the game on seasoned raider difficulty but had to change to adventurer because the combat just sucks so bad. Once I got roughly half way through the game I just wanted it to end.

I'm glad that I didn't pay for this game else I'd be even more disappointed. If you're looking for a good action adventure game just play uncharted instead.

The optional tombs are still very small in this game, usually providing only one puzzle before the reward. Still would prefer something closer to mini dungeons but these are better than the tombs in the first since they tend to look cooler and the puzzles you have to do feel a bit more inspired.

Combat functions and feels virtually the same as the first, which isn't a bad thing but it's a generic third person shooter with regenerating health. It's still fun but doesn't provide much challenge, I was able to scrap my way through every fight without having to think and only died once because someone punched me off a ledge.

This game doesn't saturate you with action though, so it never gets too repetitive as long as you're exploring the world and trying to find everything. I got 100% and probably only about a quarter of my time was spent in combat situations.

All in all I had a great time with this one, giving it a full score higher than the first for the further improvements to level design.

Expand

Also I kinda hate the thing with the coins that won't appear unless you read the murals, and in order to read the murals, you need to collect documents and other stuff, which means that you will have to go back to a map more than twice, one time in story mode, where you will notice some documents, relics, murals, but not all of them, after which you come the second time, to find the murals and documents, and the third time you come to find the coins. I really hate this, but this is just my opinion because I like making 100% on every game I buy, because if you are playing just for story, you won't need the coins, maybe the documents to understand better some things. This game is a very good one, but for me it has some bad parts that's why I give it 8/10, but still it is a must play for people who like action, shooters and puzzles. Also about puzzles, they were not so hard but also not so easy, some of them required me some time for understanding how they work. Expand

Terrains are usually blocky and often tear as the camera moves. Character models are slightly better, but again, textures frequently tear in awful ways. It's actually really disappointing. The gameplay is pretty poor too. Shoot. Jump. Press square. It's just too plain. Occasionally, interior areas look nice to explore, but they're rarely interactive, sadly.

The story pacing is pretty poor too. The beginning of the game throws you around too many different locations. It's all just too much to take in, with a huge amount happening in just ten minutes. It's just poor directorship.

I wanted to like this game, I really tried. But I think it really is an example of a studio making a game for the sake of it, with no love, no care. It's blatantly a cash cow. I have to ask myself whether I would put my money towards a tomb raider game from this team again. The answer for me is no.

    1) So many cut scenes, mini cut scenes and QTEs...like one every 4 minutes. They don't seem to want you to actual play the game. Seriously every stealth kill is a mini cut scene
    2) The combat is just boring, if you "stealth kill" an enemy in front of another enemy, literally if they are standing next to each other, the other enemy won't see you because it was a stealth kill. Even though in the stealth kill cut scene animation he's staring at you while your murder his friend
    3) Voice acting is just...bad
    4) Survival/crafting element is tacked on and seems to have no weight on actual game
    5) Distances seem arbitrary, Lara Croft can jump what appear to be dozens of feet at a time if it fits the level you are trying to navigate
    6) The animals you are supposed to hunt for...reasons...just kinda wander around and don't seem to respond to you in any consistent way whatsoever...but if they walk next to you and your swing your ice axe you can't hit them for...reasons...I guess

And I nearly forgot, if you shoot generators with a single arrow...they explode

All in all this game just served to remind me how much better Uncharted was and TLOU2 is.

Don't get me wrong the main game is excellent. It has more of the same with improvements while addressing the main critiques of the prequel. But lets start at the beginning: It is a story driven exploration game. Lara has grow since the prequel and is on a way to a new adventure because there are things out there that she would not have imagined before and she wants answers. The story again is great with good twists but I must mention that I have seen one mayor twist miles before. The new characters Ana, Jacob, Jonah and Sophia are great. They easily got attached to me and I cared for them. The exploration aspect is improved. The additional tombs are bigger and more challenging. I enjoyed the puzzles and was sometimes impressed by the ideas. The crafting system is robust and here you get even some real side-quests. An addition is the translation system. As you got more proficient in languages you can read some clues on monuments or documents to get additional benefits. There are also some minor improvements here and there. The graphics and soundtrack are really good. Then there is the Baba Yaga DLC for free on the disc. While not relatively long it is intense has a good story and a memorable boss battle. I found this a worthy addition. Blood Ties is a welcome adventure filled with puzzles and riddles. I enjoyed this more detective style adventure a lot. Be warned it has no battles and plays only in Croft Manor / Estate. Can put people off but I enjoyed it. Laras Nightmare is the opposite and while I enjoyed it I would not mind if it was removed. Final rating: The content is excellent and an improvement over the already good prequel. The 20 years celebration however tricked me into thinking it was a best off with more content. I subtract nothing because of this because it is satisfying and the old games would be out of date today especially for the graphics. Expand

This game is really good in my opinion, but there were 2 main things that really frustrated me. One of them is the gameplay. It felt kinda clunky. Recoil in this game is horrible, the gunplay as a whole was pretty bad imo. The second thing was that this is a open-world game. I don't really enjoy openworlds so it was bad for me. I felt some kind of emptiness throughout the game, where instead of doing the side missions, or hunting the animals i was just straight forward going to progress with the story which lead to only about 10 hours of gameplay. But aside that i quite enjoyed this game and i had fun overall. There were even some things that i expected from Uncharted 2 (for example) that weren't there so i was surprised in a good way. A ton of set pieces were also a good thing. The story was pretty enjoyable, but i kinda felt that Jonah didn't get enough screen-time. As a Uncharted fan, this is a good refresh with Uncharted franchise being done. Great game overall.

The graphics are fantastic, as you progress the enviroments become incresingly diverse, and the cast of characters is entertaining as it is enjoyable to both listen and watch as the narrative unfolds.

The real highlight of the game for me tho, comes in the form of collectibles, upgrades, puzzles, and tombs that you'll find in increasing amounts through each area of the game, this accompanied with the added dlc, as well as chapter replay elite, and expeditions mode, serve to further increase the replayability and engagement of this title.

The combat system in conjunction with the platforming mechanics and the stealth systems, all contribute to an engaging and at times, surprisingly challenging experience.

If there are any complaints that I have with this game is that at times it can be an overwhelming experience marrowed by a complex ui and multiple goals to complete.

It tends to feel "bloated" after a while, and as such during my first playthrough I felt somewhat "rushed" by some of this systems, feeling like I could only focused on the clearly explained, and marked goals.

However, despite those issues, Rise of the Tomb Raider did ended up becoming a pleseant game to experience through and through, and I would recommend this 20th anniversay version that includes all of its dlc as well as added modes.

The rejuvenated Tomb Raider game, first in this trilogy, was a god-send for me as someone who always loved the series but was over the direction it was going. Rise goes one step further and fixes almost all of the flaws of its predecessor and in fact, for me, directly challenges Uncharted for the best game of its kind.

Gameplay is refined, focused and above all ridiculously fun. Traversing the predominantly snowy and ice rugged Siberian landscape is exhilarating, with all the immersion-breaking active time events removed. There's a huge focus on actual tomb raiding for the first time in years with some really challenging puzzles and loads of artifacts to collect, ancient languages to learn and items to unlock. Combat is intuitive and flows well. The difficulty is spot-on. Crafting is kind of silly but ultimately really enjoyable. Making bombs, poison, smoke grenades etc on the fly is great and really becomes essential in later encounters. Lara feels like an absolute machine by the end of the game, which is a blast to play through. RPG elements like clothing choice, skill upgrades and weapon mods are interesting enough but I honestly didn't see a huge different in shotgun varieties for example, so don't know how relevant their stat differences truly were. Her arsenal is amazing though and that's enough for me!

Graphics are stunning in this game, particularly Lara and the environmental effects. Dark caves spring to life via Lara's torch, dusty ruins are impressive in scale and atmosphere and the weather/lighting/explosion/other fun stuff effects are pretty incredible. The DLC adds a huge deal to the story and wold, one by exploring a trippy witch cave and the other, Croft Manor.

My major issue is with the story/other characters. The story is so standard and dull, and never felt truly gripping and the side characters are almost exclusively 2-dimensional. Thankfully, there has never been as much effort put into Lara's characterisation and watching her evolve into a ruthless, almost obsessive killer is fascinating. The situations and people she encounter are slowly morphing her into the competent, sassy and cold character we got to know in the 90s and I cannot wait to see the conclusion in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Considering Uncharted pretty much stole TR's crown in the 2010s, I firmly believe Lara has wrestled it back from Nathan. What Uncharted holds above TR in terms of narrative and maybe graphical performance, Rise undoubtedly makes up for by being a better game to play. There's more variety, truly engaging combat/exploration and a much more open, involved experience in general. I'm absolutely delighted with the current state of this series!

Okay, so this released before Uncharted 4. So then why is this game better than Uncharted 4 in every way?

Well, even though it's better in every way, it's still a dumb action movie turned video game. Just less dumb than Uncharted 4, and with more interesting things to do.

The story is a standard Indiana Jones knockoff, with this one focused on searching for what is basically the fountain of youth - for no particular reason other than your dad died looking for it. While the ideas behind all of the unexplored ruins and character actions are quite far-fetched, they're at least less far-fetched than Uncharted 4. As long as you're okay with the typical blockbuster action movie, you'll have no problems with this story.

The action sequences are quite unbelievable. You'll frequently be running through exploding buildings, falling canyon walls, and crumbling ruins, just barely surviving each time. Yeah more dumb action movie nonsense, but less dumb, and slightly more believable than the same stuff in Uncharted 4.

And then there's the combat and climbing. You're basically superwoman disguised as a normal woman. You'll be able to take on groups of gun-armed troops with only an axe, by running directly at them, one-shot multiple enemies at the same time with a single shot from your trusty bow (after you get the skills to do this - which makes most guns useless), and climb near-vertical cliffs with your scrawny not-at-all-suited-for-rock-climbing arms. So if you're still young and on a power trip, this game has got you covered.

Realism in enemy placement is done better than in Uncharted 4. In that game, people would just start randomly attacking you, like everyone in the evil organization knew exactly what you looked like and where you were at all times, even when going to remote random locations. At least in this game, you're typically going into enemy-protected territories, so it makes sense that they'd fire on whoever showed up.

When you're not doing combat or running through exploding corridors, you'll be exploring and solving physics-based puzzles. Some of this is required to get through the main story and much more of it is optional. The great part about this is that there are skill-based rewards for finding and completing optional tombs. So you don't just get a useless relic, but something that feels tangible in-game, and is normally quite useful. The puzzles are pretty good, although a bit on the easy side for an experienced puzzle solver. After I found all of the levers, ropes, interactive objects, and the end-goal of each puzzle, it was easy enough to figure out the solutions and then climb my way around to activate the right parts in the right order. The exploration and puzzle aspect of this game was far more interesting to me than Uncharted 4.

And then there's the crafting. There's a good number of items and weapon upgrades to craft that require animal skins and other things you find lying around or on enemies. After you craft something, its yours forever, so you will eventually run out of stuff to craft. Well, besides usable items, such as fire arrows, exploding arrows and poison arrows. And thankfully the raw materials are plentiful enough for those that I never felt the need to try to conserve my arrow use. The crafting aspect of the game makes it much more interesting than Uncharted 4, which had nothing like that.

Oh, and there's loads of costumes. None are really fan service related, but at least a few show off the main character's assets well enough. They're all quite normal clothes (mostly winter clothes), with some giving various benefits. Most are unlocked by default with this 20th anniversary edition, but you get a few others by doing story content, side content, and collecting money in-game.

Besides all of the above, there's lots of relics and documents to collect. Relics don't do much, and are basically just an achievement goal. Documents give in-game lore for various periods of time. Having 100 year old documents sitting around doesn't make much sense, but at least they all have a summary at the top. Most documents aren't very interesting (don't expect any thought-provoking writing), so I normally just read the summary - again, better than what Uncharted 4 offered, which was no summary for its documents.

I'm not at all awed by visual realism in games, but this one does a pretty good job at it.

The game surprised me. I wasn't expecting the well-done puzzles, crafting, or slightly-more-believable story than Uncharted 4. So now I'll be looking for a good deal on its sequel.

I ve been playing this title on a PS4 Pro with SSD and encounter only slight frame drops during 2 or 3 small cut scenes, beyond that the game ran flawless. Loading times are okay. The fast travel good be faster but it is still acceptable in my opinion. Graphic wise the title delivers stunning visuals and very good effects after all.

The world in Rise of the Tomb Raider is based on a semi open world setup which opens up during the main course of the story but lets the player wander off if he likes too. The controls are pretty much polished and enhanced from the 2013 gameplay. The skill trees, weapon sets and movement is extra ordinarily good and gives room to each personal playstyle. The puzzles are way more enhanced then 2013th establishment and enriches this game quite a lot.

Difficulty wise there is enough room for casual play, regular play and also hardcore veterans, although I found that the regular mode was performing solid might be too easy for more advanced players though. For people that like action adventures such as Uncharted I can only encourage to buy this title. It is from time to time on sale and pretty much a steal for 10 bucks or less. Regular story will take around 10 to 15hrs whereas main play plus or completionist will take you to around 20hrs of gameplay.

The game has a good story and not bland and boring, from the get-go of the game you are immersed into the game and actually feel that you are working towards a goal and not just playing

One of the best modern action adventures has finally arrived to PS4. Except a few small issues this version is a success, moreover, you will get all DLC along with the game; you can play in co-op and you will experience and extraordinary trip to Lara's home –  even with the support of VR. Set high difficulty, turn off auxiliary indicators and enjoy the Tomb Raider with everything that goes with it.
