The combat system is quite enjoyable if a repetitive after a while. The variety of weapons available, whilst not huge, is fun. Each weapon has its own unique quirks and tactics that can make them fun to play about with. The RPG elements are quite extensive, not only can you level up weapons and other consumables, but you can customise them to better suit your particular play style. Your character is also customisable with different brances of customisation unlocked as you interact with each of the three main NPCs. FInally, the main vehicle is also upgradable to equip new weapons and improve its durability. The downside to these, is that you dont need to make a decision. There are easily enough items available through the game to upgraed all your traits, weapons and consumables This essentially robs the player of replayability that could come from picking a speciality and focusing on it for one playthrough before replaying as a different speciality.

Unfortunately that is about the limit of what I can say in a positive light about this game. The story line is incredibly short and could easily be completed in a few hours if the numerous enemy bases and collectables were ignored. The dialogue is fun and at times witty, but the main host of characters are instantly forgettable and the quest arcs so short it is difficult to feel any attachment or involvement in the games world.

Whilst the combat is fun, it suffers from a lack of variety. Most enemies can be killed by simply pounding them full of lead, removing the need to play around with your variety of weapons (I killed 95% of enemies using the assault rifle).

The overworld is mostly full of markers to investigate, but all basically amount to the same thing - an enemy base that must be infiltrated and cleared out -with a few extra tasks to complete along the way depending on the base type. This is a huge misstep. It is clear from some of the bases that someone at avalanche does have some idea of how to develop a compelling game with fun side quests. Some of the better side quests have there own little stories and great level design. However, most suffer from the same old reused models, rearranged slightly to give the impression of a new section of the game, but it is very apparent that its simply a Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V situation for the vast majority of the map.

This brings me to the vehicle combat. there are a number of vehicles to be collected in addition to your main vehicle which can be upgraded. However, the need to do so is minimal and all too easy. The only real combat comes from chasing down and destroying mad max-esque convoys led by large trucks, to curry favour with some of the NPCs. However, this quickly gets old and there is litttle else in the way of vehicle combat to speak of. The vehicles you work to collect and upgrade serve no other purpose than to get you from location A to location B in a world that feels oh-so-empty.

The final and perhaps most dissapointing thing was the large swathes of unused map. There is an entire racing circuit in one of the areas with no associated missions or side quests. Ther are other large sections of map that you can easily complete the game without visiting. They contain nothing, no side quests, no missions, no collectables. This screams of an incomplete game. A world map that can hold so much and was fleshed out with copy-paste bases instead of story and characters.

Overall Rage has the feeling of a game that needed another 6-12 months in the incubator coupled with a decent amount of feedback from playtesters. There is so much potential in this game that could have been unlocked with a little bit of TLC but it fails to realise almost any of it. It is also notable that in the 6 months since release, there have been few patches to fill in any of the empty map spaces or correct some of the numerous glitches and laggy menus that plague the game.

Exploration is the least satisfying of any open world game I've ever played in my life. There are a few weapons and powers you have to find scattered across the wasteland, but that's it. It's a big open waste of time and space.

Since the writing and characters are atrocious, and every bandit-infested gas station or roadside attraction is exactly the same, there is exactly zero motivation to do anything but follow the arrows to your next objective. At least the original RAGE had character, and a fun CCG built in.

    Skip RAGE 2.

The second key flaw for a game that claims to be wall to wall action is incessant Stalker and Metro style shortages of ammo. This quickly grows tiresome and robs the game of pace and enjoyment.

Lastly the feel of this game is not helped by rather bland graphics. Everything is washed out with ugly colour palettes and uninteresting environments. Indeed graphically this game feels backwards, like something you would have expected back in the early 2000's.

All in all a really bland affair that I'd lost interest in after 40 minutes or so of play.

In the year 2019 you simply can't release a forced 1st person game anymore. People don't like forced 1st person games. So don't do it. You always, ALWAYS add an optional 3rd person view option in any game. Because if you don't, your game will not get far. Just don't do it. Hope devs learn and especially CDPR too.

Driving is **** horrible but you have two driving main missions for some **** retard reason. Driving a motorcycle feels as good as grinding naked on a cactus. Whole driving seems tacked on and unnecesary. Story is bland and cringy. I didn't expect much story from this but even then I was disappointed by it. It basically just took up time for no reason. Completing anything pauses the game for 5-8 seconds to show you that you received 3.50 dollars that you cant spend on anything and got 35 reputation for a guy that doesnt mean anything. Totally kills your momentum, slows the game down unnecesarily.

Tldr: The gunplay has some shining moments but the overall quality is very low and unpassionate. Stick with doom for a better shooter or with borderlands for a better madmax style open world.

Rage 1 was an interesting tech demo back in the day (well that is how I saw it). This is the final product a concept fully realised? Yeah it has some fun gun play/abilities sprinkled in between lots of empty open world jank driving and very dull open world story elements.

This is supposed to be an Earth in Future from the NPC references local to USA? Games like Division and Fallout take cultural and political critical pot shots as Rage 2, but it is an equal opportunity bullet to the face unlike Rage 2.

Visually the game looks over bright, but not in a fun whacky Borderlands 1/2 way. Characters look gross and weird. Story, dialogue and characters written by some who still writes with color wax crayons probably? Yeah it's that basic and dumb. What is with the SJW hair cut in this game lol?

When stuff is going at speed and/or a lot is going on the screen performance dips to point this game was not optimised for the PS4. The in game menus also freeze so no smooth transition swapping menu screens. This is almost on par with the poor performance of Borderlands 3 gameplay/menu slowdowns.

A missed opportunity for sure. Gun play/abilities 7/10, open world 5/10, driving 3/10, writing 1/10, escapism 0/10, performance 4/10. Rage 2 the game is comparable to the current failings of many Hollywood movies. Flashy, mindless, full of cringe writing and over staying it’s welcome.

There are 6 main missions before you can go fight the last boss, and the rest are side missions (ie go her clear this, or go there an collect that), You can skip them all and finish the game without any extra guns or powers if you want, so there's a chance a player won't see all there is to see during their play through. The story was not engaging at all. The open world is just a series of connected roads with very little open areas so that is also disappointing. I can't recommend this game at all. Expand

Whereas Wolfenstein and Doom combine good shooting with high production values, great music, great graphics, and coherent art direction to make fun and immersive experiences, Rage 2 does not. To be direct, I've never felt more terrible about spending $60 on a game in my life. My five hours with the game gave me a sinking feeling in my stomach. I felt cheated. This was a rush job that needed more attention to the elements of game design that we expect from a single-player game selling for $60 in 2019.

    My chief complaints:

    1. The production values are terrible, and the game simply fails to maintain immersion. Graphics and voice acting are last generation, if that. The game is obviously unfinished and any exploration of the world yields the same character model over and over again. Their voices don't sync. It takes every character forever to say anything, which completely ruins any momentum or excitement you might feel about playing the game. The end result is a world that doesn't seem to fit together. Areas are arbitrarily placed here and there, but they don't seem to coalesce into a feeling of a world. This is terrible for a modern open-world game. I just felt like the discrete combat scenarios, while exciting from time to time, did not fit together. The result was a feeling of being a game-tester, trying to have fun on the developer's unfinished product.
    2. The menu doesn't work (terrible lag when browsing through and interacting with it) and it does not explain itself. The developers just tacked more and more pages onto it and never revisited it to make it navigable. It's also ugly with no design or reason to it except that there be a lot of pages that take forever to get to.
    3. In-game "tutorials" are obvious transplants from the testing phase, which add to the feeling that I paid full price to playtest and give my impression of an amateur's attempt at game design. This was simply not the intended end result and it shows.
    4. Music lacks a coherent style and does not add atmosphere to the game's areas.
    5. Driving adds little apart from having to drive somewhere.

My takeaway: The lack of polish simply made me feel sad. Especially after playing Doom right before picking this up. It's such a shame because this could have been a great game with another year or so of work. The 4 score is credit to the engaging and fun shooting. More care for the other elements of the experience would deserve at least a 7. I thought the downsides wouldn't bother me because I love id shooters, but the quality of life issues and the lack of an inviting presentation really got in the way of my experience. The drab characters and meaningless world sapped the fun I expected to have and made me return to Wolfenstein and Doom which offer more comprehensive experiences. I thought I could fill in the blanks for rage 2 and use my imagination to build on the combat and make the game fun on my own, but this game is just not a complete package. Traded it in for $32 gamestop credit and won't look back. I'm relieved I didn't lose more money on this.

Don't fool yourself - it's not another id Software's masterpiece!
I wish RAGE 2 was an improved Rage 1 with Doom 2016 shooting, headbanging soundtrack and extraordinary characters. Now I have this bastard baby, that Mad Max and Blood Dragon made. There's list of all you should know before buying RAGE 2:

Story - Like a straight line with no twists - you see the ending just from the beginning. It took about 10 hours to complete the main story, unlocking all guns and perks, visiting all arks and devastating enormous mutants.

Shooting - You remember this feeling of synergy of protagonist and guns in Doom 2016? Forget it. Weapons in Rage 2 just make no sense - upgraded Assault Rifle is ultimate killing machine. Another guns are toys and you won't use them due to low-efficiency (also, BFG not included in standard edition, haha).

Driving - In Mad Max you could feel the difference between cars and environment. RAGE 2 has a cardbox cars in a cardboard world. All feels the same.

World and Activities - just look at another typical open world games. Uninteresting events in a flat empty world. There're not even interesting places to visit!

Soundtrack - IT HAS NO MUSIC! IT IS ALL THAT AMBIENT-LIKE NOISES MY FRIDGE MAKING! (seriously, RAGE 2 have something like main theme, that you can hear in main menu, but...)

Performance - 30 FPS lock, tons of bugs, in game menu freezing like it's 2007 and you try to run Crysis on your old PC. Don't know what else to say.

To sum up - you MAY have a bit of joy playing this, but only if you know how to entertain yourself. In other case - highly unrecommended. Even on sale. Yep, 4 point score - what it deserves.

Your personal vehicle is armored and you can upgrade the heck out of it. Your weapons are really good and fun to use. It's an open-world style and you have tons of stuff to get into , it is a very long playing game. It's kind of snarky like how Borderlands was which makes it fun. The only thing that they do need to work on is maybe adding a team-mate in the sequel. You almost get teammates but they don't get to ride with you or do anything with you. If you choose to go down that path as a game creator, please make sure you give the teammates a lot of verbiage so their conversations don't become monotony like most video games. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with this game. Most game creators these days are like lemmings , if one gets a stupid idea everyone else follows suit and puts as much dumb stuff in a video game as they can which becomes agonizing and restrictive. They went around the status quo and added as much fun in this game as they could. Good job! I intend to buy more of your products. Expand

So, I have to give credit to the game for its gameplay, it's fun as hell, gory and fast! This is no game that cares for its story, it's only used as an excuse for the gameplay, so one just has to accept that. HOWEVER, I played this game on my base PS4, and HOLY CRAP! This is no game that cares for its story, it's only used as an excuse for the gameplay, so one just has to accept that. HOWEVER, I played this game on my base PS4, and HOLY CRAP! I have never had a game that made me think that first, the sticks on my controller were broken, then, that my AV receiver was somehow causing a latency so it had me redone my cable management to plug my ps4 directly to my tv, and then, had my thinking that my TV had broken and was no longer supporting game mode. And why ? As it turns out, this game has not been optimised for the base ps4 so there is a horrible input lag that causes a weird acceleration and buggy dead zone, making precise aiming nealy impossible, which is just unacceptable for a fast shooter like this. It made me turn on the aim assist , that's how bad it was. That is the reason alone i gave this game a 4, otherwise i would have given it a solid 7. So heads up when buying this game for the base ps4 Expand

The shooting is okay, but everything else about this game is just insultingly boring. I will now describe what you do for 80% of the game's runtime:

You move across the map monotonously to tick off a checklist. After that, you move across again to tick off another new checklist. You sit through some bland dialogue from some bland characters, and proceed to tick off yet ANOTHER

I'm playing a game here! I don't want to do some chores, I want to PLAY a GAME. I have plenty of tedious tasks to do in my real life, without having some to do in my spare time. I really need to stop playing AAA games, and I'd recommend you do the same.

I had to create a meta critic account to express how awful this game is, I was about to buy it right when it came out but decided to pass on it instead, I'm glad I made that choice, today I finally got the chance to play this game and I usually am the kind of player that reads every piece of story, engages in every conversation and enjoys side quests that bring the world alive but thisI had to create a meta critic account to express how awful this game is, I was about to buy it right when it came out but decided to pass on it instead, I'm glad I made that choice, today I finally got the chance to play this game and I usually am the kind of player that reads every piece of story, engages in every conversation and enjoys side quests that bring the world alive but this game starts with a generic story, pretty visuals that hide an empty level design I saw myself skipping every cut scene or dialogue because it was filled with empty exposition, the characters are equally uninteresting and the voice acting does nothing to sell the story either, I really hoped this game could redeem itself on the game-play, but after 20 minutes of open world game-play although the guns felt good, the overall experience was repetitive and boring, I have never un-installed a game so fast. This game isn't that great. It's supposedly open world but you're usually forced to drive to locations via a set path, with mountains blocking any deviation. All weapons and special abilities are collected via side missions, which are also boring, meaning that I completed the game without all of the powers and with only half of the weapons - you don't really need them. The only saving grace is the combat which is good, as it was made by ID Software who made Doom. Worth a quick run-through as the campaign isn't that long if you focus on the main missions only, but I would not recommend buying this - play it for free on PS Plus or your equivalent subscription service. Overall this game is bad!

Let me first start with the only positive part of this game and that will be THE reason for most gamers to play and enjoy this game. The shooting mechanics including the upgrade & skill tree really creates some awesome gameplay (moments). And if all you want is to shoot, drive, shoot, drive & shoot, then this is probably your game. Story wise, there is

Story wise, there is absolutely no story that is interesting. The introduction of the game is just wierd and you have no clue who you are or why the hell you are doing what your're doing. The overall acting of the characters is extremely bad, including the voice-overs. The graphics are so bad on pc, you don't believe the first time you start playing. I literally, went back to the settings menu, thinking I forgot to save my video-settings, but I was all activated.

Driving your car is horribly, even after upgrading the care a bit. The missions are boring as hell, and i mean the main missions. It all comes down to go their and kill everything in a world that is empty as hell! This is just DOOM in a sandbox with additional skills like a double jump and more of that stuff. I'm glad I've not yet finished days gone, because I refunded this game.

Rage 1 was better than this second installment.

Rather dull and tedious combat, irritating characters and dialogue, lots of driving around a rather lifeless and boring world. It looks nice and runs really well on PC, but is just a chore to play with very little to offer players that have hundreds of other options.

Rage 2’s nonsensical story is unbearable, and the unskippable exploration parts are mostly irritating and boring. Luckily, the shooting gameplay is so amazing that it’s easy to forgive these flaws. And while encounters can become repetitive, new weapons and abilities make sure there’s always some fun to be had.

Rage 2 is a victim of a wave of technical issues and painfully average story but still manages to be one of the most fun FPS you can encounter and can provide you with your adrenaline shot for the day if needed.

The relentless thrill of one half of it dragged down by the barren, boring needless sprawl of the other. [Issue#334, p.110]
