It's a great example of an amalgamation of movies as games. Since it can be played with multiple people making choices it adds a bit to the "game" part. The story was enjoyable and having multiple people invested in deciding choices really helped pull you in. As a single player experience I think it would loose something, but if you enjoyed the movies it is a must have addition to the lore.

This game is an interesting take on what an interactive movie experience can be.
The performances and motion capture of this were fantastic. The story itself was good without being ground-breaking. Some of the dialogue choices you are forced to make were genuinely difficult and the overall character interaction was well done.

Some of the decisions are challenging both morally and emotionally - this is an interactive movie and as such this is how I rated it.

A butterfly effect, multiple pathway game this is not. There are others that do the mixing of gameplay into the interactive movie genre much better than this and if I was going to compare and rate this as a movie/game hybrid it would have scored much lower but as a pure interactive movie it does well in my opinion.

Overall, I believe that this decision-based game has been developed with multiplayer in mind and I feel that is where you will get the value for money with this game. I really enjoyed this "game." I am a huge Planet of the Apes fan, and being able to get a new story about this world, and play (an admittedly minor) role in shaping it was pretty awesome. This is similar to a Telltale game. The biggest difference is that there are even less quick-time-events (which I'm ok with). I sat back, experienced the story and added a bit of input. While I understand that this would be offputting to many, it was right up my alley. I like story driven games, and this is even more like a story driven experience than game. Almost like reading a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book, I'll snatch these type of 'games' every time.

Update: Since I have now Platniumed this game I'll give an additional bit on to my review. I still really like this game. If you are not a completionist, this is a great addition to the PotA mythos. The first playthrough was very engaging and enjoyable. After that it was quite a slog getting through all the various little bits to get to 100%. This doesn't take away from the story and game, but it certainly reduces the replayability.

I'm really a big fan of this franchise, the new one that is. So naturally I bought this. I liked it, seems a tad overpriced but other than that it was definitely cool. I don't remember it being very long though which is definitely a shame. My main take away from this game though, GIVE US MORE PLANET OF THE APES GAMES! And please, make them good.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is a game as it isn't! At best, it's an animated movie with a 4 possible endings...you choose the next sequence from two outcomes and, unlike even a Telltale game, there are zero skill challenges or puzzles to provide some entertainment.

Very dull and sadly the story is compelling enough to hold your interest. Incredibly disappointing.

Rent a movie - cheaper and better. The idea people want this product is ill conceived and the interaction is minimal, so why bother? Better to craft a good single story than try to make up several bad ones.

Planet of the Apes Last Frontier is basically a 4 and a half ohour long interactive movie that tells the story of man vs ape
Youll be playing from boths sides, a tribe struggling to find food for the winter, and a group of survivalists that are visited by ape hunters…
the game essentially plays itself while you make crutial decisions..
There are multiple endings and outcomes here and this game can also be played with up to 4 players locally…
as the story plays out its up to you to stier things in a certain direction, as youre playing both sides.. things can get pretty interesting here..
you can pick sides or you can try for peace.. create conflict.. its all up to you..
though outcomes aren’t always so blck and white, its possible to lose important characters in the story…
the story telling though I felt is just poorly done..
don’t get me wrong the overall story and trying to find a balance or tip the scales in this man vs ape story is enjoyable..
the delivery of this story is just awful, transitions are harsh.. its hard to tell who in the cutscenes is about to make the decision at times… and its also really hard to follow along as it isn’t the telltale style of choose a dialog option…
options are more on the side of, do you agree with this person or that person, youre right or wrong…
so you really have to pay attention to the dialog that at times is just really hard to pay attention to.. its just not interesting for the most part…
and on the ape side it’s a lot of reading though occasionally they’ll just flat out speak English.. making me wonder whats even the point of the sign language and grunting.. just give me some English speaking apes the whole time…
I do love though that you constantly feel like your decisions matter, you feel your life and the life of your tribe or group is at stake, and youll have to make so many in the moment tough calls on whther to attack or shoot in situations or just do nothing, this is definitely an interesting take on the choose your own adventure genre…
but again the delivery of the story here is still pretty rough..
And the ending. .at least for me.. felt pretty abrupt.. and left me feeling pretty disappointed with no payoff..
I give Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier
    a 6/10

Awful. You get a choice every few seconds, but most of the time they don't even differ, and a lot of the time your choice gets completely ignored anyway because the devs had to keep it linear. This isn't just lazy writing, it's incompetent writing. The voice acting is pretty bad as well, and it makes no sense that these apes can speak even better than the ones in the movies.

This game wasn't even good as a drinking game. If we'd gone with any of our drink ideas, we'd have been f'd out of our minds within the first 10 minutes. Stay the hell away from this awful POS and go re-watch the awesome movies instead. Devs, shame on you for charging people for this. You are absolute crooks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the most frustrating games I’ve ever played. Has the potential to be something great but nearly every choice you make is ignored by other characters or your own. Make a choice and after ten minutes the main character has a different opinion and you aren’t allowed to change anything. Terribly lazy writing killed this game and I’m glad that I bought it while on sale. Expand

One this isn't a game it is a playable movie in which your choices don't matter. It filled to the brim with forced bland tropes. They had the chance to make an excellent experience and this pales in comparison to others in the genre. Graphics are generally nice when they load properly. Stay away unless it is like 2 dollars on sale or you want an easy platinum trophy.

The game is so sexist with a total of three significant males - one who is empathic doctor who wants peace; on who’s the “leader” but has no power and let’s the males make all the decisions; and the only female monkey who’s gender is emphasised by her **** and jewellery. A thoughtful pick-you-own-post-apocalypse worth taking your time to mull over. However, meaty moments of drama are derailed by rouge banana peels. [Jan 2017, p.91]

Barely interactive, and fails to capture the suspense and nuance of superior games in the genre. [Jan 2018, p.65]
