A Great game that I had a lot of fun with. Persona 5 was my first ever Persona game and my 165 hours on my first play through shows it lol. Now, the game can take awhile to get going, hours actually, but I enjoy the story and had no problem with this, so this is more of a warning to others that the start can be slow. The characters were well written along with the different romance options. The dungeons were fun and engaging. (except for the second to last one, to much back tracking in that one) The game looked really good and some good humor to it as well. The story does a good job of making want to really get the bad guy at the end of each of the dungeon. The combat has nice variety with some customization, especially if you want to mid-max. Each teammate you get has there own specialty and their own Persona you can customize to some extent, even can customize outfits. Normally, I am not a big fan of the time gated daily activities, but in this game I enjoyed then and had a lot fun with it. There are a great deal of side activities to do and characters you will meet along your journey. The music can be good at times and animations are really good. Persona 5 to me is another Awesome game for 2017. Expand

Only a short way through but very happy with all i've seen so far and there's clearly a hug amount to discover.
Fair warning, this game only tutorialises you to a point. It tells you many things only once.
From reading the low reviews it seems some are, perhaps, just following the daily repeat and not exploring options!

Oh right, and it's not just a dungeon crawler, it's a life management sim where you foster relationships (and try to bang the teacher), built up your confidence, intelligence, etc, and also just get immersed into the world.

One of the best games of all times, you owe it to yourself to play it now. It has a slow start cuz of a long tutorial though.

It's about time the Western RPG gets erased from time, and this is the game to blow it into Oblivion. Thinking of the dominance Bethesda once had in the RPG market makes me quite sick to my stomach. Persona 5 is a testament to the better era of RPGS: when you were playing them on your SNES/PS1/PS2 and proof that turn based still kicks ass.

This game without question is the best Persona series so far - The best Graphics/Animation style, Sound/Music (JAZZ, Classical, Pop/heavy -rock) on point and amazing as always! Persona 4 Golden had a couple of soundtracks better and couple of other elements better but overall P5 style, new gameplay mechanics, dungeon and bosses were much more difficult, which I liked.

I love the entire cast and characters. And I thought it was funny when Morgana always telling me to go to bed and others may find this annoying but I thought it was funny. If you are NEW to the Persona series. This one is NOT to be missed! Any gamers who have never played a turn-based strategy game should absolutely try it. I am tired of only "action based" games and always looking forward to different playing styles. For any new RPG or JRPG fan this is a must buy and play! I now consider this to be in the TOP 3 best RPG ever made and maybe #1 taking over Chrono Trigger's spot... And I could only dream of a "time travel" Persona story (hmmm)... But the Persona stories are amazing, very well developed, and detailed.. It will have you on the edge thirsty for more to find out the truth in what is really going on. The ending had some twists and turns and I absolutely loved it!

This is an absolute masterpiece and will take you through a journey that will make you feel like you were part of the cast!

If Persona 4 was already sensational, 5 takes all that and improves a lot. Better looking graphics, a great story with a sense of rewarding your goals, a new reward system for social link levels, a colossally stylish HUD, improvements to battle (particularly in a group) and the soundtrack, as always, sensational.
Its only problem is the decrease in memorable moments with all friends

The writing is very interesting and the art style is really cool. The drawbacks? The camera is a pain when it comes to the stealth system. I hope this is something they can fix with a patch because it would make the game soo much better. The game is very linear but with the sheer length of the game I can honestly say that I do not feel like any of my time was wasted so far. Everything I do in the game in in furtherance of the storyline and building my character. Compare this to something like witcher 3 where you are free to go most places and do what you want when you want. The difference is in an open world game you can get side tracked and waste time without improving your character in some way. With Persona 5 since you are under time limits and the way all the activities contribute to your character's growth in one way or another, I feel productive after every gaming session. This game is not for everyone , but I was quite surprised on how taken I was with this game, I love western rpgs but this is my first jrpg and I was skeptical that I would enjoy the new playstyle, yet the writing and various systems make the game really enjoyable.

    --Sound:

Anyways, I told myself that I would only buy it if it had over 30 hours of game play, I'm pretty slow at beating games. When I looked it up, the average time to beat Persona 5 was 93 hours. Keeping true to my word, I bought it.

This is literally the best RPG I have ever played. The characters are amazing, and their progression and development is the best I have ever seen in a game. The story is gripping, and the combat is beautiful, turn based fun. I do not regret buying this game at all.

    BUT

if you have a strong hate for anime, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. it is so good, but it has very strong anime influences to the story (i.e. the high school kid at a new school part of the plot, etc), which I can see some people disliking. Some cut-scenes are made like a literal anime show as well. It's so much more than that, but if you hate anime, I cannot recommend, since the story is such a huge part of the game's charm.

If you love anime, or even don't mind it, give this game a try. It is very, very good.

Persona 5 combines the best aspects of Persona 2, 3 and 4, and while not revolutionizing the genre, creates a new gold standard for J-RPGs.

I'm a long time persona fan, and I've beaten every game. My favourite Persona game was the duology of persona 2, which had outstanding writing and well developed characters. However, Persona 5 has far surpassed all of its predecessors by incorporating game mechanics and themes from each game.

Something many Persona and Shin Megami Tensei fans had missed when it came to Persona 3 and Persona 4 was the demon negotiation system. Although it comes in a different form in Persona 5, the Negotiation system is back and adds a lot to the feeling of your enemies! Thanks to the negotiation system, enemies don't just feel like mindless drones. They have personalities, likes, dislikes, etc. Knowing your enemy can often save you from a world of hurt!

The writing in this game is unrivalled by anything released in the last decade. Although it can be verbose and sometimes a little too in-your-face, there are lots of subtleties in the script that will be much appreciated by attentive players. Character development using the new system to replace Social Links, now called Confidants, is very good, although not perfect. My only gripe with this system of character development is that when it comes to main characters of the plot, their character development is OPTIONAL. Meaning, you can be in a romantic relationship with a party member, and nobody will EVER mention it outside of one cutscene. It's quite jarring to be in a relationship with a party member, and two cutscenes later, your friend is hitting on her.

The combat system is amazing. Using the "one-more" variant of shin megrim tensei's press-turn system, combat feels fast paced, and even the weakest of enemies can beat you if you're caught off guard. Essentially, hitting a target's weakness (for example, fire) will cause them to be knocked down and take extra damage, and give the person who hit that weakness an extra move.

Navigating the options in combat are beautiful and actually very fresh for an otherwise jrpg combat system, because instead of using the d-pad to cycle through options, each option has a different button assigned to it. For example, to summon your persona, rather than finding the option with the d pad (which grows to be tiresome in older games) you just press the Triangle button, and all of your persona's abilities will pop up, ready at your disposal.

The music in this game is also top notch, as Shin Megami Tensei games and Persona games are known to be. Shoji Meguro is truly a genius of a composer, and brings a new style to each entry in the series. The theme of Persona 5's music is Acid Jazz, and it's beautiful to listen to. You spend the game listening to pretty much the same 7-8 tracks over and over, and you would expect it to become annoying. You would be wrong. The music is so good that it somehow lasts about 100 hours without getting to the point of irritation.

Overall, I'd like to give this game a 9.5, but since its a 10 point system, I'm going to round it up. If you like Japanese RPGs, this game is an absolute necessity, and in my opinion, it's game of the decade, easily.

This could be my favourite game of all time. I don't take this statement lightly. Although thisThis could be my favourite game of all time. I don't take this statement lightly. There has been a lot of talk in the media lately about adult themes in video games and Persona 5 sets the new standard for what this should mean. Usually adult content refers to harsh language, soft sex scenes or strong horror content. Persona 5 however, takes an adult approach to story telling. Although this is a JRPG it totally bucks the trend of the genre. You will not be searching the land of Xania for the magic crystals to stop lord evil face from destroying happy town. In persona 5, the villains are everyday people.

Within the first 10 hours of play, the game intelligently covers the topics of assault, child exploitation and most importantly, stereotypes and the way we judge people on the stories we have heard about them/the way they look. I have never seen these kinds of issues explored in such a thought provoking way..... in any medium. The characters are fantastically written, to the point that they actually feel like people. I came to Persona 5 straight from Mass effect: Andromeda and the difference in character development is night and day. the characters here want to go the cinema! they want to talk to you about home work. They text you randomly about what's going on at the moment. They convincingly become your friends. I cannot stress how much i loved these characters. I can't go into specifics as it would be a disservice to anyone you wants to find out the intricacies for themselves but these people will get under your skin at some point in your play-through and stay with you

I thought i would put an emphasis on the story here as the gameplay mechanics have been discussed extensively in the reviews from sites like IGN, Gamespot etc. I wanted to get the things across that made this a special experience for me personally. So, here we go:
    .
    1. The most unique and compelling story telling i have ever seen in gaming. If you had the chance to go into someones thoughts and change the way they see the world, would you?

    2. A sense of Style that effortlessly blends Anime, spy movies, teen drama and acid jazz without skipping a beat.

    3. It feels like the developers loved the product they were making. Its oozes out of every corner of the game. Everything has a purpose, there is no fetch quest busy work here. Triple A western developers could learn a lot from Atlus. They have shipped a game that is finished. A rarity in this day and age. its reeks of play testing and quality control.

    4. This is the biggest point. Nothing feels any thing like Persona. I am suffering ( as i am sure many people are ) from open world game overload. The last 3 games i have played ( Zelda, Horizon and Mass effect ) have all had the big world map that you open and sigh at the sheer volume of pointless stuff you still have to tick of the list. Admittedly, Zelda handled this fairly well but every game seems to want you to collect 900 random doodats and visit 19 towers which in turn shows you another 90 things you have to find. I could not finish Mass effect because of this. I got the jungle planet and one of the first side quests asks you to find the missing cargo from a crashed spaceship. upon opening the map there were around ten of these i needed to find. I was supposed to be finding new settlements for the human race, why am i finding your ships lost DVD collection or whatever it is ? Persona doesn't feel like this at all. If there is a crises the party will feel tense, they will tell you that "now is not the time for a visit to the public baths, we are in trouble!" etc. It just feels fresh.

I don't want to spoil anything so i am going to stop here. Sorry about the random rambling about the game. It just feels special to me. I hope this convinces a few people to take a chance on something different. I promise you won't play anything else close to this on the current generation of consoles. this is a "once every 10 years "kinda game.

    Enjoy the ride

This game has only just begun to Steal the hearts of its players who first got into persona 10 years prior with P3 (still the best in the series imo)

    What could improve this game?...

When you have something great you still want more.
    1. Give the player a full year.
    2. Use a hourly schedule or by the hour instead of days.
    3. Allow players to go over tired if they force themselves downstairs etc when over tired but allow them to do what tasks they wish. (no bed time).
    4. Show what happens when main character goes home.
    5. Allow switching party members from field before battle without having to go to entrance (but still require confidant or having to waste turns in battle.
    6. New game plus add a few extra main dungeons not just X secret.
    7. More variant in battle themes (fixed with paid dlc)

This goes perfectly with it's laid back attitude while playing. The music is top notch and the pace is as fast as you want to play.

Persona 5 is a dream come true for jrpg enthusiasts. If you have never played Persona before, this is a good game to start you on the series. The confidant system makes you look forward to talking to each character you've met whether they are a party member or not and the moments feel rewarding with each skill you unlock.

The turn based battle system is a welcome return and is refreshing feel after playing the constant action rpg's that most series are adopting like Final Fantasy.

Stealth in this game kinda reminds me of moments I experienced in MGS and the game makes it clear that using stealth will reward you more progress within a "palace" which feels more rewarding than just running around and findiing a stairway to the next floor.

Getting other persona is better to than the random card drops you get like in part 4 because when you get a monster to beg for its life you can ask for it's power ( to join your team basically ), an item, or money. And if you want stronger persona you can fuse other weaker persona you have to make new ones that will give you an edge in battle most times.

Last but not least is the fact this game is very replayable with it's new game + which let's you carry over your characters personality traits so you can see what things your MC will say or do that he couldn't do the first playthrough.

A must buy for all jrpg lovers and PS4 owners in general.

Persona 5 may feel like it starts off a bit slow for some as story elements are told to the audience unfamiliar to the franchise, but everything it did right in Persona 4 is still there and more. The game makes you really feel like you are within the game itself, living out your daily life inside this fantasy world from doing menial tasks such as catching the train, eating, and cleaning your room. Persona 5 goes a step further by making you feel like you are living within an anime TV show - one that could feel a bit wacky at first, but really delves into character development, and heavy themes such as physical abuse, the consequences of rumours, and sexual immorality - all backed by an amazing jazz inspired soundtrack.

The JRPG element is also refined with added concepts of range weapons, a stealth factor, and overall crisp animation movements, but keep in mind that even though the game is classed as a JRPG, it is not even the core bulk of the Persona franchise.

If there were a few things that irked me a little was that movement and character interaction inputs within the game sometimes didn't feel as smooth as it could, but overall an improvement over an already established masterpiece in Persona 4.

The story truly has to be the most realistic and engaging to date with its tackle on modern social problems and dark themes compared to the last 2 entries and I can safely say if your looking for a dang good story to get invested in your in the right place. Now going through my 2nd play through I have to say it's actually more enjoyable that the 1st time since useful elements from a cleared file are carried over when a new game is made. Expand

    Pros:

    + Memorable Story and Characters
+ The UI is incredibly slick, and the transitions are very stylish
+ Combat is a ton of fun, which builds upon past Persona games with the Baton pass and guns. Things get mixed up during boss fights as well (it reminded me of Trigger Commands from FFX, but executed much better).
+ Demon negotiation is also back, which will be a hit or miss for some people since the responses you need to select may appear random. I ended up liking it though, and it's a great feeling when you force a powerful shadow to cough up money and run away instead. Running away yourself isn't the only option anymore.
+ Dungeons are a huge step up from the hallways of Persona 3/4 (however if you liked this, it's back in the form of a huge dungeon called Mementos). The level design of these dungeons are nothing to brag over and don't do anything new, but it makes up for it with style and atmosphere.
+ Tokyo is filled with things to do and discover to the point where it's almost overwhelming. And the "Confidant" system is a pretty good evolution over "Social Links" of previous games.
+ Soundtrack and visual style is top notch, as expected.

    Cons:

    - There are a couple very convenient story coincidences and revelations. They sorta came out of left field. I found myself raising my eyebrows maybe one too many times.
    - A little too much..."Talking", I guess? For example, in the Velvet room, I don't need the attendants commenting on every menu option I press or every Persona I check out. Also, the protagonist says something every time I use my Third Eye (which is kinda like Batman vision). It's can get annoying and grating.
    - A few too many textures look quite poor, even by PS3 standards.

Overall: Persona 5 is incredible, plain and simple. Between the style, combat, and the story, there is so much to love about this game. This is a must play, so make sure it doesn't fly under your radar.

This is easily the most stylish game I have ever come across, and the importance of this cannot be understated. A game where you spend a lot of time in dungeons fighting shadows would become incredibly monotonous if not for the style and flare of Persona 5. The turned based combat in the title is taken to the nth degree and is very enjoyable. Furthermore, the game has some great music. However, I still prefer the music from P4 (probably because I'm biased). In addition to everything else the game has a compelling story, with many unexpected twists and turns. Moreover, the game makes an effort to switch up the mechanics in each dungeon to make the experience feel fresh. Lastly, the characters in the game are expertly written and are very enjoyable to interact with.

Overall I would advise anyone that has a PS4 and an interest for JRPGs to get this game.

The Cast of Characters are likable and the english Voice Actors have also done a very solid Job. Changes of the Gameplay, additions of the Battle-System like the Monster Negotiation (Known from SMT), better Level Navigation as well as more saving Options are thoughtful implemented.

This results in a comfortable Experience, making Persona 5 a good starting Point for Newcomers. This is handsdown the best modern JRPG Series and i highley recommend Persona 4 (my Favourite), followed by the more challenging Persona 3.

I played through it on easy and found it was just the right level of difficulty for a casual player like me. The story, presentation, social links.. it's so much fun. I couldn't recommend this game enough to any fans of anime, rpgs, Japanese culture, story driven games, unique art design and fun gameplay. It's the best persona to date in my opinion and deserves game of the year.

If you're concerned about time spent on this game, don't worry though. You can skip entire dialogues though it's not recommended because the game is extremely dialogue heavy.

Lastly this game world is huge compared to Persona 4's Inaba. They've taken full advantage of real life Tokyo and brought it into this game. Sweet! There's a ton of great things to be said about this game. The sheer brilliance of this game is truly amazing. Must I say more? Just play this game so you can experience this masterpiece for yourself! It's totally genius!

Simply put: best Persona game yet, best JRPG of the last two generations, one of the best JRPGs ever.

Best Persona game because it takes everything from the series, expands on it, refines it and lets itself unfold in a wonderfully recreated Tokyo. It has also the most enjoyables story and characters of the series, even if the plot tends to implode a bit in the last chapters. Best JRPG

Best JRPG of the last two generations because it has the best combat system (a classic turn based system with many modern, interesting, challenging and enjoyable tweaks), a coherent, deeply crafted, modern and realistic pseudo-fantasy setting, a huge amount of mostly well written dialogues, a good, long and satisfying story, interesting and quite mature issues (populism in politics and in every day life, bandwagon mentality, sex industry in Japan...) lots of side stories, one of the most amazing OSTs ever made. All these things are absent in most JRPGs of the last two generations, let alone finding them all in one single game.

Persona 5 has me intrigued with every day passing in the game. I wish I had more hours in the day to experience this unique story and combat. This game once proves once more that 2017 is an amazing year for games. I highly, highly recommend you spend the money and try this game. You don't need to have played the previous games to appreciate this one. I love the maturity of this game considering the characters are all in high school. If you enjoy anime, turned based combat and the most incredible visuals I've seen, what are you waiting for? If you are on the fence because of this features, this game will make you a fan of all the aforementioned.

My mind kinda goes blank when it comes to explain what is so good with this game, but i will try and add an unexpected remark at the end about a particular observation i have made concerning people reception of this game.

First, whether you like JRPG or not, you should really try to understand what kind of experience this game gives you.

The Artistic direction is probably the best i have ever seen in a game, the menu, loadings times, everything is done in style, and it really gives a relaxing experience while playing the game.

The music is really catchy, really good, and you will find yourself being excited to engage in battle just to hear it more, and even let your playstation on just to hear something from the game.

The story of the game is really intriguing and pretty deep, persona game are known for devling into psychology and inspired by idea like the collective subconsciousness, that reflect realities and problem that exist in our real world. it's a fiction that really go deep into actual, real life situation, while adding the fantasy/anime/relationship aspect around it to create a really strong and compelling narrative.

Let's not talk about the how much time you will play this game: The main story is about 90-100 hours, which absolutely monstrous and so far i have never encountered a longer single player RPG in my whole life.

The gameplay? As far as Turn based can go, this is one of the best system, it's strategic, fun and dynamic. Every action is assigned to a button, there is no menu scrolling, no "button mashing to attack all the time", it's very clean and well designed

The game is very story based, a lots of dialogue, that stay interesting because they teach you more about the world, help you learn and form relationship with others, or gives you a subtile hint about the general story of the game.

The difficulty is for everyone, you have 5 difficulty setting, i don't need to tell you more about it, you want a challenge? you will find it. You are totally new to the serie and don't want to be overwhelmed and destroyed? There is something for you.

I am obviously biased in this review as we are all subjective being, but a collective positive reception should help you make a better decision.

I do have to note something also: Many people will claim that this game is very "niche", or only for the chosen few that like anime and JRPG, and i would disagree with this.
even presenting the story, the gameplay element to a variety of people got people interested, and especially people that are not at all into RPG, i don't think this serie is niche, i just think it's severely Undermarketed.
I do strongly believe there is a "universal appeal factor" that exist within this game(somewhere in the collective subconscious) and that it just await you to just give it a fair chance.

By far the best game in the Persona franchise. It stomps all over 3 and 4 in terms of gameplay, (so far) story, and aesthetic. It's flaws are so minor (a long yet enjoyable tutorial section, slightly cheesy dialogue) that it does not affect my score.

The mixture and delivery of the uncountable number of activities in this game are a sheer joy to all gamers. The Persona system is enough to keep you busy perfecting the best of the best Persona for your journey. And with the mercliess difficulty being extremely punishing, those Godly endgame have a nice use in New Game Plus.

The soundtrack and sound effects are unlike anything you have heard before and go hand in hand with the graphical transitions that are stunning and effective at telling a proper story. You've got your normal expected bits: off the mark teenage "foul language", saving the day with friendship, awkward moments in romantic encounters, and some really zany gameplay moments. What Persona 5 (and the series overall) adds to this genre is a flushed out and compelling story with interesting characters. The turned-based battle system is rare these days as most JRPGs localized in the west have gone the action-route. Some people find turned-based games dull, but this game will make you plan out and rethink your next moves.

The graphic style is lush, full of style and tweaks that are very pleasing to watch. The English voice acting is great (as far as they go) and you do have the option to use the original VO which is a nice addition. The gameplay is smooth, deep and will punish you for making mistakes.

This game is really a production. It's entertaining to play and watch. When I played P3, P4 and now P5 there has always been a non-gamer in the room that gets sucked into the story. For my outdoorsy friend to remember the Japanese names of characters, and to actually care to see what happens next is just as impressive as my girlfriend getting emotional at some plot twist. Story-wise this game ranks right up there with The Last of Us.

To enjoy this game you need to be able to let yourself slide into the weeby anime style a little bit, if you do you'll find a game that really goes beyond your expectations and past the tropes. If you are looking to realistic graphics, hate the anime style and generally dislike JRPGs - you'll likely be too distracted to enjoy the story. This game goes beyond the tropes, but it does not change them - keep this in mind if the high scores have made you interested, but you haven't enjoyed JRPGs in the past.

An emotional game that shows the spirit of freedom, and bonds that we make on others mixed with a badass turn based combat system that had made me always excited to fight in even after the hundreds of fights I have already done. The music is outstanding and is one of the best RPG and game soundtracks of all time for me now.

The social sim mixed JRPG adventure has proven to be a wake-up call for me as a individual, as it has made me far more open and free whenever I play it. While this may sound sappy and increidibly cheesy, Persona 5 stole my heart. A charm that has not struck me this hard for a long time. Sure it has plenty of rough areas and with the restrictions Atlus placed on the game, its hard not to cry foul on why this deserves a 10. I honestly would not blame anyone who thinks Morgana is annoying, or the beginning starts off very slow and even turn off the game for how it handles time. But I think those that love a good adventure (with a decent story littered with great characters) will appreciate it.

It's better to note that I have never played a Persona game, so as a newcomer who only heard about the series and playing this twice for a thorough experience, let me once again say this game is a (flawed) masterpiece that I enjoyed the hell out of AND see as a work of art that doesn't use beautiful landscapes or graphics to show it, but art designs, wonderful characters, snappy combat, outstanding music and addicting activities that puts Persona 5 in leagues above most games. Maybe I'm a Phanboy, but even with a few flaws I do find glaring, my overall enjoyment, emotional depth and cleverness by Hashino and his team proves Persona 5 is one of the best RPGs and games of all time.
