Persona 5 Royal is worth a new msrp price due to it's added content. However some of the addition's (such as the mini-game of darts) could've been put in the original. The best new mechanical aspect of the game is the "showtime" attacks. Based on the initial trailer I thought each individual character had their own super attack, but it was just snippets of the showtime attacks. The added content gives the game a longer playtime. Despite claims that it's exactly the same as the original...it's actually the opposite. Yes, the flow of the game is the same as the original, but the overall experience is very different.

After stating the above, I cannot rate the game anymore than a 8. The reason is quite simple as to why...and it centers around DLC. The velvet room becomes a focus in Royal for it's challenge battles. However, once the 1st tier is complete...it becomes clear you can't advance to a different tier without buying DLC to do so. The DLC in question cost the equivalent of the game itself. Initially, I thought that you would have to buy the challenge battle DLC for Minato, and P4's protaganist, which would've been the right way to go. Aside from those two battles, the other battles are equivalent to tier 1's battles...basic. No one should have to pay for them, much less $59.99 to do so. Whoever made that decision (Atlus, and or Sega) should re-evaluate their business practices.

I have never loved a group of video game characters more than the ones in this game; Akechi, Ryuji, Futaba, Makoto, and Morgana are favorites, but the other characters are still great. I won't spoil how, but the counselor, Maruki, is one of my favorites also. It wasn't until I played/watched the whole game, including the new semester (you have to level up Maruki's confidant scale and other things to access it, so look up a non-spoiler guide beforehand), that I loved his character though. I was surprised when I found out he wasn't in the original game (not even as a small role). Overall, I would highly recommend playing or at least watching this game (I found out after quitting and deleting the game that safe mode might fix the problems I had with checkpoints, so maybe play on that if you're like me (I usually play games on normal or hard)). First, is it fun? And you bet your bottom dollar it is! Battles are engaging, and at times challenging. Persona fusion is a process of trial and error, but it's fun trial and error. It's fun to explore Japan and listen in on conversations and current events. You want to explore palaces completely because of how beautiful they are. As far a RPGs go, this is certainly one of the more fun titles.

Does it have a good story? Again, the story for this game is beautiful. While I can't go into detail here to keep the review spoiler-free, my opinion is that the story alone is worth the price of admission.

Are the characters memorable? Here I have a bit of contention. While the characters are indeed memorable in their own right, most of the characters' names blend for me. Most of characters stick in my mind as 'the reporter girl', or 'that evil teacher guy' until I get to know them better. Certainly enough to remember their faces, but their names, not so much. It might have something to do with the names being exotic for me.

Are the graphics good? While I wouldn't call it 'state of the art', It's still quite pleasing to look at. The anime aesthetic is quite beautiful, but that same style prevents it from being a graphical masterpiece. The menus are a joy to thumb through, though.

Is it replayable? While I haven't done so yet, I plan on replaying the game soon. There are so many ways to play the game that each playthrough is different. Will you focus on your relationships with other characters or your social stats? Which characters will you from close bonds with, and in what order? There's so much to do in this game, and I can't wait to do it all!

There's no reason to play the original Persona 5 when Royal exist. The combat feels satisfying with Baton Pass feeling a lot more useful. The life sim aspect got easier to manage, confidant previously only accessible by story now can be access manually. Kichijoji is a nice addition on the already numerous places you can visit (The Darts is my favorite), Maruki and "Kasumi" is a good addition to the game. Thieves den gives a pretty good reward for completing the game and certain achievements with the interaction between characters and the Tycoon minigame makes the place not lacking in content. And the new dungeon are the best out of all dungeons in Persona 5 Royal. Of course this game isn't without criticism. First, what makes Persona 5 bad is still here. Yes, Morgana is still as annoying as ever but they've toned down the annoyance to make it more bearable. But the story is still the same, even the Okumura arc is still terrible compared to the others. Also, the new part of the story distorts the original meaning of the story. The story now feel less about reforming society and more abut self-freedom. Which is a good and a bad thing. The good part is that the ending gives the original story an fresh update over the original story. The bad part is that now the story feels off compared to the rest of the arc. The DLC is TERRIBLE! Please even if you want to. It's just not worth it. For ANOTHER $60 you just got the Costume and the Battle Trial is not even worth it. So do yourself a favor and just download the original P5 DLC. And the last part is the technical of the game. It's still Persona 5. That means the game is still a PS3 game in it's heart, and it shows. While yes the game runs at 4K on Pro, the lack of anti aliasing on the 3d element and the 30fps cap on the game makes it kinda lazy. But then again the art is so gorgeous that the problem kinda being offset a little. Still whether you like it or not, the improvements that this game brings to the table makes it worth it for new players and veterans to play. Yeah the original problem is still there but the new stuff and improvements makes this game truly, the definitive Persona 5 Royal. But it left one thing, What about the original? Well, if you've played the game while the improvements are very nice, it still not that necessary especially when the price of Royal is ~$60. Whereas the original is $20. My final verdict is pick it up if you're new to the series, but for everyone else. That's it for my review and see you later. Expand

Persona 5 is really a great game, and thus P5R that is based on P5 cannot be too bad. However, I must say that the additional story for P5R is in my opinion not up to par with the original story, with the new story and new character being a bit "awkward" to the main story line of P5. Otherwise the new and modified mechanisms of P5R are great and make the game more enjoyable.

It's been 145 hours and I don't want to berate this game anymore. I got tired of the chats, the constant repetition of the same thoughts, there were a couple of tedious characters and long episodes with no way to save. But in the end, the music, the story, the art design and the overall mood will be remembered.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (New Reviewer Here) An awesome game, only complaint is that just one of the endings is just APPALLING. The "True Ending" that is a part of this remastered game, in my opinion just ruins the whole "Akechi is alive" tease was horrible, I really liked the mystery/undetermined thing about Akechi's fate, that was actually good on ATLUS' part. Despite my nitpicks and complaints, I think P5R is a great game, good character development, such as Ryuji's social link, the only Social Link I disliked was Makoto's (Other than Ohya, but y'know). I maxed out my party's social links and some others (like Iwai, the gun guy). This game franchise got me head first into JRPGs and I would never change that, I played Persona 4 first, due to the fact that I thought Joker (Ren/Akira) and P5 was overrated, now? I don't really care, this game is amazing despite my nitpicks.. I give this game an 8 out of 10.
    I would give it a 10 IF...
    Akechi's fate stays more mysterious/unclear
Social Links like Ohya's and Makoto's had more engaging things for me to pursue.
Social Links like Haru's to be more rewarding instead of just VEGETABLES

Definitivamente recomendo o original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the game but I also didn't like it at the same time. I feel that the game-play and dungeon design is phenomenal however I feel that the story is kind of stupid, that characters are bland and that the themes and pacing are all over the place. I go in depth about it in my video review of the game on YouTube that is 35 minutes long but I thought I would review it over here so that it's seen by more people.
I dislike the story quite a bit and a lot of the dungeons are boring or are out of place within the story and don't seem to keep with the core ideals and themes of the plot. I played the game right off of the tail end of playing my two favorite games of all time (Persona 4 Golden and Valkyria Chronicles 2) and in every way when it comes to the plot it feels like a step down from the story telling of Persona 3 and 4 and VC2 just has a great plot no matter what some may say. I went into it hoping for an experience I'd remember for a long while but two weeks after beating it I don't remember a single social link or scene other than the stuff at the end compared to P4 to which I think about nearly every day.
I do not feel that it deserves the 10/10s people are giving it and don't get me wrong I still liked it but I just simply don't have many fond memories of playing it. I feel that the flaws the game has need to be addressed in the reviews here and I feel that too many of them are just "it's so good look at the UI." I feel that people should still definitely play it but not look at it as the all-time best Persona game or RPG ever because it isn't. It is the only game I have ever pre-ordered and I regret being swept up in the hype and doing so because it was a disappointment for me because I expected more from it.

I played the game in Jappanese and I was waiting to make a review for the game when the release of west was made. This review I made it on november. P5R is a good game for an JRPG Fan like me of course in this aspects.

-Gameplay: I think when I played P5(Vanilla) it was a good gameplay but it needs a log and a advice tag when you want to do a critical or a technical attack. This game added that and surely paid off. Also I like the add of the showtime attacks that is a good extra for the game for something to help and save SP/HP. Another aspect is mementos that is a dungeon to explore and get lot and EXP. That part was difficult on the P5(vanilla) cus you were limited, but the add with a boy solve that problem and I even reach lvl 99 without problems on my first playthrough Lol. New boss fights were added and old ones change they were a lot of fun to play vs them and add my strategy skills to use again like the twins.

The open world is now more freely to speak with confidants and Morgana doesn't tell you to go to sleep it was a good add but I miss it too cus for me persona is a JRPG but the first gameplay it shows how limited you are but also add a good reality of what the game offers you, I feel very easy to try to get the mayotity of the confidants and the new place to visit Kichijoji help a lot on the team with activities to pass the time but also boost them. Also the confidants have an extra scenes that make fresh dialogues and see more of them.

Music and sound: I play all the persona games but the music with P3, P4 with P4G and P5 are always the best aspects of the game by far l. The music of each game has their unique taste making the game very stylish. P5R has a good soundtrack but it doesn't get me hype like the P5(vanilla) but still makes a good effort to make something fresh but not very hype with it. The sound and effects are very well polished just like with P5(vanilla).

Art: Here I don't even need to rate it LOL you know the answer XD.

Now you are thinking why I'm telling good things of the game but why a 7.0(7.5). Here comes the bad things that I think this game fail for me.

Story and essence: I think this story is the same thing with changes on dialogue and some adds, but adding Kasumi to the story doesn't really affect to the main plot until the third semester that there is were the new things are getting. Now for me my opinion on Kasumi, she is not my best character even if they give her all the screentime of the life like a wall to pass, I even rate her 5th of the female thieves. The reason is because she doesn't even get that essence of the P5 with her backstory and life. I think she fits well on P4 than P5 just cus her story if I could tell in general she is a happy person she has her life literally ready you have a father who loves her, the society doesn't even make her an injustice and she wasn't even in danger or threatened. If someone who played the game it could reach to that conclusion, but the point is that I think Kasumi was wrong all the time about her life cus she wanted to reach high and be the best on gymnastics but there was another side that makes her think that she would not reach it. I think her family wouldn't wanted being selfish about your life is not worth it, is like a drama for me if you see it if you want to play the game. But her story is more of P4 than P5 cus the message of P4 for me is seeking the truth of the person than what it shows on the TV or any social media, just that we are using cognition and it remind me that. Makoto on one of her confidant rank says to the protagonist "The most important part of your life is how you choose to live it." that's something that Kasumi should do, but for this game doesn't fit her cus is rebelling against society and saving the people who needs it its not rebelling your life for someone by being selfish and making your life miserable if your family doesn't want that the only one that I think is worth the other confidant Takuto Maruki. The other thing is that this game is in doubt because P5Scramble release in Japan and is a true sequel of the P5(vanilla) so this game is not canon(I tell this for the people who like the story and the characters and probably you should wait for that game than this). The final is not the same and shows a bittersweet than the unity of the last one.

Price/DLC: This is another aspect that ATLUS is bad. I think the price of this game doesn't even afford it to be a full price. By telling you that the story is the same just adding new things I could make a price of 30-40 than 60 cus is the same process of the game just with new things. And the DLC I just recommend to buy the boss fights ones cus the outfits are very expensive and even if you bought it on the vanilla one you need to 1 or 2 dolars for that.

    Gameplay 2.0
    Art 2.0
    Music/sound 1.5
    Story 1.0
    Price/DLC 1.0

    Equals 7.5 cus metacritic doesn't have 7.5

P5R's gameplay is truly the best I've seen It makes the Turn-based combat fun and rewarding where the battle mechanics have been adjusted to the point the game starts feeling easy even on final boss fight I played on normal and I felt that the game was holding my hand from start to finish those who are looking for a challenge should pump the difficulty to Max, now for the social sim mode of the game a lot there are multiple activities that you can do so you'll never feel bored, but the main point are the confidant there mostly fun some of them can feel corny but the three new ones outshine all the rest there so well-written that I felt bad when I finished them early so I gotta give the gameplay a 5/5 there's nothing left to say

the story and characters are where it bites the dust for the first half you experience a story that fails in holding everything together the entire phantom thieves get the spotlight in their own respective arcs after that the story won't pay attention to them and neither will you unless you're doing their social links and you'll better do because otherwise, they'll get zero development as for the villains most of them are bland the only interesting one is the new content villain as for the others they just appear, you go beat them, then they apologize that's all. if I was 15 years old this would have been so good for me, too bad I've seen better narrative the new content is when the game starts giving a damn about the villans as two characters become the stars of the show giving you a decent climax I found myself enjoying this 30 hours but that's not even half the playtime of the first half.
story 2/5 I've already seen the first half is still very boring and it takes almost the entire screentime

This can be one of the best JRPG you can ever play. If you didn't play Persona 5 Original before.

Everything about P5 Royal is with updated system and gameplay. Some bad and some has been changed due to new stories been added.

To first timers, this isn't much of an issue. Gameplay changed much easier and faster for those new comers. I don't see much of problem with that.

However, real issue I encountered was frustration playing the Royal.

I think those who already finished the original P5 wanted to see how the additional character fits in with already perfect P5 characters. There was really high expectation of new girl who's dancer name Kasumi(Sumire ;)p)). Well? It really pissed me off and made me angry at Atlus for the first time.
This really showed how not to just add somebody just to sell more copies of your game.

Kasumi is attractive and pretty girl and had very high expectation, but Atlus just didn't seem to know when to utilize her character in this game.

They let you play her very little in the end and decided not let you play her at all until the end.

Yes, of course P5 we already experience who's the final and the real boss is and what memento is for. P5 Royal plays out the same and by the time they let you play Kasumi, you will be just tired to play this long game. your line up for the boss is already perfect and there will be no room for low leveled Kasumi and Akechi fits in. All the items and equipments are already planned out and your mind is already done with this game by the time Atlus let you play her.

Me? I just put her in my bench and never looked back. I skipped through boring dialogues and was hoping to reach March to end the game.

I gave 10/10 on Original P5 and loved the characters and even bought Strikers.

I'm hoping I won't fall for P6 updated version after release of original.

Atlus just doesn't respect those who already purchased first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's what most people say: "Oh! Persona 5 is the best game in the series! This game is a must buy! You must play it. The characters are memorable and the story is amazing!"
    Here's me: "Persona 2, 3, and 4 is better."

I'm sorry, but I can't stand people kissing the game's butt for being the Greatest Game of All Time. Because honestly, it's one of the most overhyped and overrated Persona game in the series. Not to say it's bad, it's an alright persona game, but not the best one in the series.

    Pros:
    Soundtrack:
Let's start with the soundtrack. Every persona games has a theme in their series. Persona 3 was rap and Persona 4 was J-Pop. In Persona 5, the game's theme this time is Jazz. And I gotta say. Some of the soundtracks are very catchy, if not, better than Persona 3 and 4. Even the battle theme Last Surprise, which it has become a meme to death and you'll never get it out of your head.

    Gameplay:
There's one thing that I will admit is that the gameplay has improved drastically, if not, the best in the series. No more you have to fight blob-like enemies in combat. This time, you get to fight and make a great return of battling traditional demons from the previous SMT games & Persona 1 & 2. This feels a big breath of fresh air to the series since they were absent from Persona 3 & 4. All I can say is that I'm glad they're back. And with 3 new elements: Psychic, Nuke, and Gun. These are great new additions to the game and they're welcomed.

    Art Style:
This game has drastically got an improved art style starting from character sprites, to character portrats, to animation. These are visually impressive upgrade from the P3 & P4 era.

    Cons:
    Characters:
Now that we got the positives out of the way, let's get to the negatives. Starting with the characters. I absolutely HATED these characters. All of them are unlikable comparing to characters from previous Persona games. Persona 3's characters made you feel sympathetic. Persona 4's characters made you feel light hearted and always give you a big smile. Persona 5's characters are terrible, so bad that it makes me want to grab them from the screen and punch them, mostly Ryuji because he won't shut up & keep on exposing themselves they're the Phantom Thieves.

    Story:
I gotta say this up front. Persona 5's story has the WORST story in the series. At least for the main story. Because in the Royal's story, there was new content that wasn't in the original. And honestly, it should've focused on THAT STORY because it's at least original and had a better plot twist instead of the actual main story and Maruki is a better villain and an unexpected plot twist than Yaldabaoth. But nowhere near as iconic as Adachi nor Nyx. As for the main story, and I'm gonna say this without triggering you. The story of Persona 5 feels like a rehash of Persona 4. They reused the same idea as Persona 3 & 4: someone who works at school dies, a member of your group is the traitor, the final boss is a god it's the same. And it's tiring. At least Royal did something new. Also, the game has a number of plot holes. Like, the arc with Madarame. They've found legitimate proof that the art has been plargiarized & abused his students. Why didn't they use this proof to the police? I guess plot convenience?

    Overall:
All I can say this: Persona 3 has better Story. Persona 4 has the best characters. And Persona 5 has the best gameplay. Persona 2 is the best of both worlds, but Persona 2 was a very outdated game that I can't count it. While it's not the worst in the series, I think it's not the best either. I enjoyed it, but not like other Persona games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the game is good but not because of the characters or story. Persona 5's aesthetic was great and it's gameplay was probably the best in the Persona series. P5R fixes most of Vanilla P5's problems but not all of them. Maruki and Kasumi were great additions to the gameplay and story but I feel like the game shoves Kasumi in your face too often. Vanilla P5's story and plot twist were predictable and P5R doesn't really change anything about that. I'd give Vanillla P5 the overall same rating as P5R. Oh and I wasn't mad about buying P5R because there "weren't enough changes". I played most of the Persona originals and remasters (IS, Portable, Golden) so I knew what I was getting myself into. Honestly? It didn’t live up to the hype. While the gameplay is the best of any jrpg I’ve ever played and the music was fantastic, I wouldn’t give this game a 10/10 in any other aspect. But the gameplay parts I can’t stress enough are amazing, the palaces are beautiful and creative, cool monster designs, and the controls are super user friendly.

I see a lot of people praising the graphics, and while the menus, dialogue boxes, character portraits, and such were great, most of the in-game graphics were OK at best with flat textures on background items and buildings, low detail background characters, and showing characters from a distance to hide how weird some of their facial proportions and expressions are on the models. If you look at videos of the rhythm game spinoffs you can really see how much better some of the graphics could have been.

The story was also lacking. There was a lot of filler and I feel like you could have removed like a 1/4 of it and it wouldn’t make a big difference. Most of the female party members are totally removable - Futaba is useful and Ann helps kickstart the plot (but really doesn’t do anything once the plot starts moving) but Makoto only bosses people around and tells people things the player could really figure out on their own, Haru’s dad is more important than her and she’s really only on the team because she happens to be the one to find Morgana after he tries to leave, and Kasumi isn’t even part of the team until after the main part of the story is long over - even as someone who never knew the original I can tell she wasn’t in it and she was added in later because she is just too tacked on. There are also big parts that don’t add to the story like school trips/activities and Morgana running away that would have just improved the pacing if they had been removed.

The game is also very anticlimactic. Many side stories just kind of end. Morgana’s subplot about his identity is answers with some infodumps near the end, Goro appears and causes problems only to be swept away when he isn’t useful to the story anymore, and most of Kasumi’s and Takuto’s developments become hollow depending on if whether you do the last palace (it isn’t required - I actually would recommend not doing it because it doesn’t add to the plot and is really badly written).

The game also handles teenagers really badly. The game treats them as adults with fan service of girls that are really young, teens being in relationships with adults (like their teachers, the player character can literally date his homeroom teacher), and many of the characters just act like short adults. I feel like the writer wanted this to be about young adults (like in their 20s) but the publishers or something stepped in and made them change it.

So yeah, it is a game with all the best basic gameplay and game style, but it is bogged down by a big story that really slacks in areas.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My original 2 score was way too harsh, so here to amend that. A middle score is unusual for me, I either normally love it, or it wasted my time.

It is not that it is bad, it just isn't very good either.

The worst bit by far is the crappy American voice overs and the dialogue. It is just so bad. I find it very cringey a hell of a lot of the time.

The art style just isn't that good. It quite simply looks ugly.

The music is 70's porn music. The story is slow. The enemy design is poor.

It feels clunky in everything it does.

The combat is mildly entertaining but not great. So if I dislike so many things then why a 5 score? It has had a lot of love and care put in to it. Someone, or some team have worked hard. It's just that the team is probably a team of boring people. It isn't dark, it isn't happy, it is just very plain.

It is a real trawl, everything feels so dragged out. I am often playing for 15 minutes, getting bored and trying to get to a suitable save place asap.

It certainly never has me staying up until 3 in the morning unable to put it down.

I don't hate it but just as BotW is the most over rated game on Switch, this is a very overated PS4 game.

    It just isn't much fun.

First off I believe you need to compare this version of the game to the original since they are both playable on the same system and a new player would have to choose between them and old players need to choose if this is worth buying when they already have a version of persona 5. If you are getting this one solely to have the ‘definitive’ version, also keep in mind both persona 4 andFirst off I believe you need to compare this version of the game to the original since they are both playable on the same system and a new player would have to choose between them and old players need to choose if this is worth buying when they already have a version of persona 5. If you are getting this one solely to have the ‘definitive’ version, also keep in mind both persona 4 and persona 3 got remakes on portable systems, so I would not be surprised if we get another persona 5 remake for a portable system one day.

So for everything good I have to say about royal I have something bad to say compared to the original:

Good new graphics update - but bad new opening that you see every time you start the game, uglier, smaller font (big deal since this game is largely told through text and dialogue) used than the original game, and some of the new character busts are very odd looking and don’t look like they were drawn by the people who did the old busts.

A new semester with a new palace! - it is optional. It also needs to be unlocked and the unlocking is easy enough to miss that many players may accidentally miss it. Also the new ‘semester’ isn’t very long and it is only like a month ish, calling it a ‘semester’ almost feels misleading. I can see why there are many bad reviews saying they were unhappy with how little new content there was.

New confidants to do and a new romance option - but without going into spoilers the new royal characters are very similar to ones from previous Atlus games (including previous persona games) so if you are familiar with other persona, smt, or other Atlus games the new characters may feel stale or predictable.

A new party member to use! - but she is on team for a very, very short amount of time so people excited to use a new party member will probably be disappointed. And her character arc doesn’t match the other characters being more about accepting her past and herself than of fighting against social norms and abuse. And as above, her writing is really predictable and weak.

New battle mechanics and changes to make some aspects (like weapons and guns) more useful! - but it causes some balancing issues. Some changes now make the game too easy later in the game and make make some things already in the game obsolete. Example: changes to the guns to make them better made gun-based persona and gun persona skills a waste of time to use as well as making Haru much less useful, and she already suffers as she joins the cast very late.

...So, yeah, I do not believe royal is an unquestionable improvement to the original. I’d even go as far as saying that the new additions really could have used more work and many of the changes actually hurt the game instead of improving it. The new characters are also very disappointing and I don’t think most players will enjoy them.

So overall I can’t say I enjoyed this version as much as the original, but I don’t think it is a bad game. If you played the original I wouldn’t bother getting this one and if you have never played persona 5 I would say get the original because it will probably be cheaper and it isn’t any worse. I’d only really recommend this version if safety difficultly was too hard for you in the original or if you are a stickler for good graphics and have a giant, super HD TV so a graphic upgrade would make a huge difference to you. Overall though I don’t think royal is worth it to the average gamer. It isn’t ‘bad’ but ‘unnecessary’ might be a good word.

Buy, rent, watch an LP, or skip? Skip. The original will probably serve you fine and most of the new changes may not be worth buying the game again, most new plot points are optional and don’t change the story and are skippable.

yeah no... I saw the opening fmv and thought " huh well that was... Lacking." But I said I was being pessimistic. So I checked the menu and got excited again. The dynamic menu and the music were nice and the hidden menu item was enticing, but I just wanted to get into the game.

Five minutes in and you see the new thief not that people hadn't seen her already, but the more I looked the more I though, wow she looks like joker but female with queens mask. Still pessimistic? Fine.hows this? The games new combat and overall gameplay improvements are amazing. Technical hits play more into combat, new locations and benefits to explore and abuse, new stores, confidant bonuses and even dialogue options. The new characters show up throughout the game and it's great. That's not the end of the good, but now that you've seen that there are good, understand that there are bad. The new thief isn't even available to play until the third new "semester" (we'll get to that in a bit) and she feels all the way like a self insert. Not a Mary Sue but still fanfictions.
The new confidants total 2 with one additional confidant being changed so you can actually hang with them. They aren't story important anymore. Most personas aren't even new, they've just been reclassified while new ones don't come on till endgame.

And regarding the endgame there is only ONE MONTH. That's not a whole school semester. After that month there is only a new ending sequence otherwise it's all the same. Story is beat for beat the same damn thing. You're paying for mostly just game mechanic improvements and maybe 10 hours worth of new content. 20 if you're interested in reading it. 30 if you wanna drive back and forth in mementos a bunch trying to hear a conversation about pancakes. The new SINGLE palace is cool though and the music and story building in it is bomb minus a few forced retcons. Also the new PHANTOM THIEF is the only one that gets a magical girl transformation and everyone else should have one. Also the new ending is just sequel bait for a side game and that slightly upsets me. You shouldn't waste 60 dollars on this unless you haven't played the vanilla game.

Tldr if you haven't played persona 5 yet, get it. If you have, it's up to you to decide if it's worth it. I don't think it is

Atlus seems to fund itself solely by milking their franchises, and for as much flak as companies like Ubisoft get, let's get real, even they didn't do dancing game spin-offs of their flagship titles. This is probably the most disgusting practice from Atlus, the constant release of braindead and cashgrab games that serve no purpose than to milk people for their love of series like SMT and Persona.

In any case, this expansion brings a new social confidant, a few months of gameplay and a new palace, as well as new demons and a new party member.

Is it worth the god damn full price release? Absolutely not. What a shameful practice.
Is it even worth buying if you already did everything in Persona 5? Unless you're a huge Personadrone, absolutely not. By the time I got to the Sixth Palace in P5, I was already skipping dialogue (they went with quantity over quality for sure), especially the Text messages and the overused and ridiculous chit chat involving the "Oh no, the deadline is coming, do you think everything will work out? :OOO". It's repetitive, uninspired, and lacks a lot of care for it. So, why would I want three more months of that?
Especially when the same problems still exist for the gameplay: you either grind to death in palaces before leaving them, or you waste your days in Mementos grinding lower leveled enemies. It's not as engaging as SMT's gameplay, nor does it have any fun mechanics like some of the SMT spin-offs.

This is just Persona 5 with a little bit more content, but when the original is already a dragged out game that can last upwards of 80 hours just playing normally, are you really gonna manage 100 hours of repetitive dialogue, especially knowing that every palace that arrives, a new character joins you and the older cast members either become caricatures or are completely forgotten?

If you' haven't played P5, buy this version as it's the most complete one out there. And yes, if you haven't played it, it's worth it even at 40 bucks. If you've played P5 already, this should be a 10 buck upgrade at most. Comparing this to let's say, TW3 Blood & Wine expansion... Oof, what a disappointment this was.

The game is identical to the original Persona 5. They just added a few scenes and lowered the difficulty by a lot. It's still good, but don't waste your time if you've already played the og version. Oh, and new content is locked behind leveling up bonds with specific confidants. So, there is a huge chance you'll miss like 30% of the game.

This game might not be for me. It has longest tutorial I have ever seen. After about 30h the game is still telling me what to do. I dig the high school sim style, making connection to people and organizing my time but then comes the palaces and those goofy opponents and boring fights. It was a nightmare.

While there are changes from the previous version, most of them are meant to look good on a screen and little else. The gameplay is easier so you can get through the battles faster for the LP audience that doesn’t want to watch battles and wants to get back to the story and full of flashy additions that don’t add to the gameplay but look good. Same with the story, lots of little changes to make things look nice like new character portraits, a new font, texture overhauls in some locations for a LP audience but don’t actually change anything if you are just playing the game for yourself. There is one new palace, but again it is mostly about looking nice and has trash writing and the gameplay for it is nothing new. Even the new characters are meant to look nice (like Kasumi bouncing around with her gymnastics) but actually don’t add to the story at all and have boring confidant routes and poor characterization.

If you aren’t into LPs just play the original again and wait for the inevitable anime/OVA for Royal and skip playing this game entirely. If you haven’t played the original, go buy that instead because it is the same game basically but significantly cheaper.

While this game does fix some of the issues with the original, like fixing exploits and having Morgana not keep you inside as often, most of the changes are entirely cosmetic (like new character portraits and more dynamic menus) and many issues like storyline issues, sections of palaces that were annoying, and bosses that are spammy or take forever to beat are not fixed. Most of the additions to the game turn out to be filler with things like characters that don’t effect the storyline and a new palace/semesters that you can literally skip and are things that have been over exaggerated by the advertising (the new semester is only a month long, the new party member is only on the team for the optional part of the game, the preexisting characters other than Akechi get very little new content other than the showtime feature and new dates).

So overall the game isn’t worth a purchase to most fans, even if it wasn’t as expensive as it is. Maybe you could buy this in a few years when the price is more fair for the amount of content you get, but by then Atlus will probably remake P5 again to squeeze a little more money out of fans.

This is a game where you probably have decided whether or not you will love the game before you have bought it. There are plenty of people here that declared the original a perfect game, so any positive changes would warrant another perfect score, meanwhile there are plenty who decide this game didn’t need to be made and would have given it a fail rating no matter what was in it.

For me the devil is in the details when I look at how to rate this game and for me, if you are charging as it would cost to make a whole new game you need to have enough changes and additions to be as much as a new game and Royal doesn’t even come close to that - and with several years between the two versions that is really inexcusable. It is on the same system so it isn’t like controls had to be changed or images had to be resized. Outside of the dungeons most changes are minor such as different particle effects, new character busts, and slight changes to word choice in the dialogue. In the dungeons battle has been given some spit and polish and are really the highlight of Royal, but nothing extreme and I definitely think some bad reviews are downplaying the good aspects of this version.

That being said, if the new characters or story were amazing it could still have justified Royal being worth it but it does not. Other reviews posted here go into more specifics but most of the reviews that discuss the story at all and are /not/ a two sentence blurb about how there is sooo much new content and the graphics are so much better say the new story sections are not to their liking. Kasumi is not popular with fans and I can see why as she is barely part of the team and much of the game is shamelessly begging the audience to find her cute, the new palace added to the end is a beat for beat copy of the plot of persona 4, and any developments from the new section are undone by the ending (such as Goro’s new developments) making the new sections feel like a waste of time. I would have much rather has something like the new dungeon that was added to Golden where it was cleaning up a fraction of the villain or FES dealing with the aftermath of a character’s death to provide more closure to the cast. The new ending for Royal is also hilariously unsatisfying, I thought I had messed up and gotten a bad ending because it was sadder and more distant than the original game. Anyone who says this version is an unquestioned improvement after that ending must not like the phantom thieves other that Goro or the new characters very much.

I would have given this a 4.5 or something but since this site can’t I’ll settle for 4. This version doesn’t add as much as you’d hope, the new story sections are less than ideal, and so you are mostly buying this version over the old one (or replacing you old game for this one) for gameplay upgrades.

    - New sections added to old dungeons to keep things interesting for returning players and new locations are added to the city

    - A new month of the game, including a new palace is included - New confidants and arcana are added and Akechi is now a proper confidant

    Cons:
    - Old save data from the original will not carry over
    - New month can be missed if you don’t do specific confidants. I recommend looking at a guide.
    - The new characters have almost no development outside of the new month (the month you can skip)
    - The new content has almost no baring on the overall story outside of changing the ending
    - The new party member is only on the team for the new month and then leaves at the end of the game
    - Gameplay is polished, but old plot holes are untouched - Only 10 to 20 hours longer than the original game
    - Expensive and has a lot of DLC
    - The new ‘true’ ending doesn’t tie up loose ends and seems to deliberately leave several things unanswered as hooks for spin-offs
    - Sexy Playboy Bunny Shiho is now a thing (eww), yet the English version has some minor censorship of other scenes later in the story
    - Since Kasumi and other aspects of Royal don’t seem like they will be in Persona 5: Scramble, the upcoming sequel of Persona 5, this game may not be canon (but it is unknown right now).

So the cons outweigh the pros, and that isn’t even talking about personal choice like if you like the new characters or not. While the game does have good aspects, playing the original is better.

But what really gets me isn't the generic J-Rpg style gameplay, that I'm fine with, I enjoy the gameplay, but the story and characters and that your actions almost seem to not matter at all is what bothers me. Ryuji is a delinquent and a bad person, so he spends all his time avoiding his own issues and your character just goes along with him. IRL, this person you drop as fast as possible, but in this game he's your bestie...because the universe told you so. So much of this game is, because the universe told you so.

The writing is so bad, that I doubt it could pass a highschool class. I know that you need a variety of characters, but they repeat and repeat the same lines, just to fill out time. Very one dimensional with forced choices in gameplay. It reminds me of why highschoolers in real life are terrible to be around, they have no personalities, say the same thing everyday, and can't help their own glaring personal issues. This game is torture. You can skip entire scenes and the plot will not progress at all.

Who ever wrote this must have made a note to repeat everything 3-4 times just incase the player forgot there are ways to reread every part of the story. Yes, you can REREAD the repeats just incase you have the attention span of a goldfish.

But as soon as the intro sequence is over, the game stops being a game and starts being a book.

you can basically put the controller down because you're in for hours of written dialogue, this is about 70% of the game, you're basically spending 100 hours reading a collective 500 page book, and if thats not all, this book is poorly written on it's majority: the dialog is corny, some scenes are pointless and add no new information whatsoever, the characters usually explain in excruciating details every unimportant thing that's happening, and the same information gets repeated and churned over and over, the game is treating you as if you're stupid.

When you do get to actually play, it's thrilling at first roaming through Tokyo and exploring the various activities, which are basically mere cut scenes that boost your social stats, but mid way through the game I had already maxed my stats and found myself in a sisyphic cycle passing the in-game time by sleeping, waking up and brewing the occasional coffee for a total of around 70 in-game days, that's a LOT of wasted real life time.

Infiltrating palaces is over simplified and becomes a mundane task after a short while.
The graphics are shamefully outdated and resemble Nintendo 3DS graphics, the animation is minimal and awkward, the characters basically look like lifeless puppets.

The core story and battle system is where the game really shines:
The battle system is intricate and lets you expose and take advantage of enemy weaknesses and is overall very polished.
The core story is amazing despite it being littered by the above mentioned flaws, dealing with very mature themes, it has you take against the evildoers of the world, with climactic twists and epic boss fights
The characters' voice acting is eccentric in a very anime-like way, making the cast of characters very likeable.

Overall Persona 5 Royal is mostly a mediocre and passive experience, if it was cut short leaving only the meat I'd say it's a worthwhile time investment but it certainly doesn't deserve the 130 hours it demands.

The only changes from the original are exploit fixes and changes to make a game that wasn't really that had easier such as copying the simultaneous attacks from the Golden (now called 'showtimes'), adding more SP items to the palaces, and passing out bullets like candy. Newcomers may enjoy but returning players that don't enjoy playing an easier version of a game they have already played will not enjoy Royal.

    Music/Sound: 1
The music is the same as the original, missing a great opportunity to add Lotus Juice back into persona. And honestly? I liked the old battle theme better.

The same as the original but with minor tweaks like busts that can turn their heads and putting the busts in little boxes during phonecalls. I expected much more for the price.

    Story/World-building: 0
Royal fails to fix the issues with the original story and adds new sections and events that are a grand waste of time and don't build on the story or characters in any meaningful way. I'm completely serious, Royal makes the story of P5 worse instead of better.

The new characters, I'm sorry, royally suck. While Maruki is decent with a story that works but is pretty messy, the other two are straight-up fails. Jose is nothing but a cute face only there to add an unnecessary mechanic and Kasumi is pointless and could be used as a guide on how not to handle complex characters by having dozens of ideas attached to a single character but not fleshing any of them out and backtracking on her development by the end. While we will argue forever as to who P5's best girl is, at least we can now narrow down who worst girl is: Kasumi and/or her sister.

While the series has always straddled the line between too much text/cutscenes compared to gameplay and the original P5 was pushing it, Royal crosses that line by adding on more cutscenes, arcs, and characters that do nothing while only adding one new palace in a new semester that you only see if you do specific confidants before a specific part of the game and some cheap extensions to old palaces to pad them out.

This version of P5 is also the easiest of the mainline Persona games by a big margin to the point I’m wondering why they even made Royal a game and not an anime special. If you have played any SMT game, any previous Persona game (especially the original P5), Pokemon, Final Fantasy, or any other turn-based battle game, you’ll be bored outside of the flashy graphics.

And then there is the story. It carries the beats from the original, having a strong start with strong messages and interesting characters but wearing out and gradually adding characters that don’t do anything and becoming unfocused as the story goes on, but now in Royal you get even more filler. My big hope for Royal was cleaning up Persona 5’s ending by giving focus to character who were added late and never got to be important, answering questions like what happened with Goro, or dealing with unresolved character issues like Morgana’s unresolved feeling towards Ann, addressing how Haru and Futaba felt toward what Goro did to their parents, Makoto’s relationship with her sister... but nahhh let us all focus on this new girl Kasumi even though she’s only on the team for one palace and then leaves!

I will give it some points because the graphics are better and the soundtrack is expanded and such, but this is still a weak game and I still wouldn’t have given this a high score even if the original didn’t exist to compare with.

I'm gonna feel bad for other people who get their hands on Royal on other platforms until they get to Okumura Boss Fight wouldn't be surprised if they quit the game. Even if I some how beat the boss fight I might just never wanna replay Persona 5 Royal it ruined the replay experience for me. That's the real reason for the three Stars the game started out perfect but 5th Boss Fight for the palace is when I wanna put the game down IM DONE. On the 20th time playing this I grinded & even level up baton passes, however that didn't work. I'm not gonna buy other ATLUS game after this this is bad step towards your new comers getting into Persona with this move I even played the game on easy since I'm new to the series. Love Persona 5 Royal but don't love the company decisions on this Boss Fight. The only thing that can bring me back is patching this fight which I bet they won't do until everybody complain about it. Hopefully when others get their hands on the game that will happen & get ATLUS to patch this fight to make it fair. Expand

The Royal is the opposite of that. The Royal is 'safe'. Every new addition feels like it was it was decided by a room of directors based on what would be popular and not make anyone mad instead of making changes to make the game better. The new gameplay isn't better, it doesn't add something you may have to learn or takes practice or strategy to pull off, it just lowered the games difficulty like this version of the game was aimed at a younger audience by adding stuff like adding new buffs and making crafting items easier. Many of the game additions are just silly minigames and art improvements that are OK but nothing special and feel like they were added to pad things out. The new characters are safe having bland designs and not being very rebellious (except the antagonist, but even he would have been a good guy if he wasn't so forceful and asked before he used his powers on people) and the old characters all have the blandest reactions like the writers were scared people would call them OOC if they did anything new or unexpected. The new palace added at the end feels like it would have been a generic filler episode or arc in an anime instead of being the new finale of a game's remake. The Royal is just P5 with silly additions and an identity crisis and I am disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know how Pokémon games would always release a 3rd version of a region that had slightly better graphics and small region changes, but it was otherwise buying the same game again just as a definitive version (like ruby and sapphire had emerald)? That is what this game is. Only Pokémon realized that people thought that was dumb and started making sequels to games instead (like black 2/white 2) and are now experimenting with DLC, while persona fans are apparently thrilled to pay for the same game they’ve played already just because there is one new palace, some minor graphics and battle tweaks, and a new party member that only decides to get off her butt and do something right before the game ends. The worst part is most of the improvements aren’t even that good. Grappling hook was great but most of the gameplay improvements are just more buffs/ammo/items or filler sections in existing palaces, graphics are slightly better but not noticeable most of the time, and the new characters were total disappointments. Call me when they remake this game in a way that actually fixes the problems of the original, like the stupid airlock puzzles in the spaceport, Morgana running away adding nothing to the story, and cleaning up plotholes like the traitor not even checking to see if the person he shot is in confirmed dead and in the morgue before moving on with his plans. Save your money. The gameplay is just the old persona 5 but easier, the graphics are barely different, the new parts an characters (especially the new party member) are about as well written as twilight, and it is only one palace longer than the original.

A sad remaster that fails to fix issues with the original like the frustrating airlock puzzles, the lack of development with many cast members, and slog of an ending and instead adds a personality-less new girl, a sloppily written new palace and ending, and an ugly new opening number. Persona 4 golden did everything this game does, did it better, AND was a port to a portable system.

And charging upwards of 40$ with a bucketload of DLC to boot. I might forgive if it had been a port since at least people who didn’t have a ps3/ps4 (aka not the people who have played the vanilla game) would be the target audience, but most of what the royal adds could have been an expansion pack. I watched a quick LP of the new dungeon's story cutscenes to see if I was missing out before returning the game. I was supper disappointed that the theory I had for Kasumi's big twist was right (so I figured out the biggest twist of royal loooooong before finishing it, it is that predictable) and the new dungeon's plot was so corny that it convinced me to not finish my playthrough and just return the damn thing and get my money back while the return policy from the shop I bought it from still applied.

So totally not worth a purchase. Wish I had read the reviews here before buying.

I do not understand the 10/10 reviews from people who played both the royal and the regular version of persona 5. This version is the same as the old one but with cheap upgrades like brighter graphics, poorly integrated new characters that don’t effect the plot and only become important in an optional semester, and mini games that you’ll play once and never touch again.

Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
