A great game with an great extension to the story and even though it was longer than original Person 5 I did not feel burnt out by the 6th dungeon. Got the Platinum Trophie on my first run aswell so 9/10 I want more.

Then you get to the gameplay, which is extremely solid, and feels very unique - though it still has the refined quality of a title deep in a franchise. The only complaint I can think of is that it seems a bit easy to get over-leveled or too powerful, to the point where your limiting factor becomes managing SP instead of HP, and you can waltz through most of the encounters. Overall this game in my opinion is a must-play on the PS4, and is extremely enjoyable in basically every way, as well as providing tons of content (hundreds of hours) for the price. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden before, so I know what I am heading into from P5 to P5R.
But man, this game is just pure gold, the only con I am going to say is, they didn't really improved on the Haru arc, which I thought it was lacking during the original Persona 5 too.
This games bring so much to the table, even fans who played the original one should play this again.

Kasumi is a questionable new character, and doesn't have the same things the other members/characters have, but besides that, it is a solid game and an amazing upgrade. The worst problem is definitely price, re-buying something that expensive really kills you, spending almost 300 brazilians reais twice for almost the same game is something out of this world. There were often battles in safe mode that were just grindy in a way or straight up annoying to deal with, which if it was in any other mode would be fine, but i wasn't there for the battles. However, every other aspect of the game was enjoyable. If you didn't play the original Persona 5, pick this up, but the third semester only adds a few hours of gameplay. It was honestly disappointing because it really just feels like a dlc except if the dlc character was planted throughout the whole story. I really wish there would've been even a little bit more. The ending is also way more satisfying, as everyone really moves on and goes. If I had to convince someone why to get this over if they were hesitant and bought the original, it'd be for the way things end off. But all of the problems I experienced made a tiny impact considering how good the story is, and the whole experience itself. This is an amazing and i think it will stand the test of time for a long long time. i just hope it isn't milked too much more. Expand

My main complaint about persona 5 vanilla, was that the plot could've been a lot better, considering only a few parts really surprised me, and a few characters needed to be more well built. Royal fixed both of those flaws (mostly), and made the combat system even better. It added a few characters, with two outstanding ones, being Maruki and Kasumi, which I think are some of the best written characters in the entire game. This is a great modern JRPG that you can't miss out if you like the genre, being very remarkable and fun.
This game implements the time management better than any other game I've ever played (alongside Fire Emblem Three Houses), and the aesthetics for this game are the most remarkable I've ever seen.
The Maruki arc, introduced in royal, was probably the best one story wise, and the ending was much better than the original's.
Well I only said good things about this game, but my reasoning for why it's 9/10 instead of 10/10, is because, once you get used to the flashy visuals, the game starts losing it's style, and you start noticing it's flaws. The story could still be a bit better, some characters are annoying, and it's way too long. Okumura's arc sucked, and that's pretty much all I have to say about this game, a masterpiece indeed.

Base Persona 5 was a masterpiece. Not my favorite SMT game, but it's hard to deny what it has done for JRPGs as a whole, with people who've never touched a JRPG in life loving it.

Persona 5 Royal is the better game for sure. Gameplay changes make the combat go from "good" to "addictive". Baton Passes are now its own mechanic instead of being incorporated in confidants, the Will Seeds make the dungeon crawling more manageable, persona traits make downfusing (?) more viable, and Showtimes are just eye candy (especially the endgame ones). They also changed Mementos to be less tedious and samey. There are some touches to the social sim part of the experience, too. There are so much more evening time slots that it becomes hard not to max your social stats by the end of the game, you get phone calls after a hangout, allowing you to get some extra Confidant points.
However, here's the problem: this is one of the easiest games I've ever played. The only troubling parts are at the beginning, where you're underlevelled, and at the 5th bossfight, where you have to use a strategy to win. Everything else is a cakewalk. I was level 99 at the end of the game unlike base P5, where I was like level 75. I've played the game at Hard difficulty, yet it still felt really easy. Unlike base P5 and even more so P3 and P4, maxing out all Confidants is not only managable without a guide, but even somewhat easy.
    ------------------------------------------------------Third Semester (no spoiiers)---------------------
Now, the third semester. It's really good.
It gives me hope for P6, since the story brought up some cool points.
The villain is really likable, and the final palace is easily the best one (yep, better than the 6th). The puzzles are great, the bossfights are great, the music is great - it's incredible.
Kasumi is a really great character, at least here. Pre-third semester she's pretty weak and most of her problems are generic. Also "uwu senpai" is really infuriating the 35476th time she says it.
And Maruki? Well, this one's... up for debate. Just play the game yourself.
    ----------------------------------------------------------Conclusion--------------------------------------------
Is it worth 60$? Well, if it's your first time experiencing Persona 5, then it's an easy yes. If you're revisiting it? Not so much. While it's still a big upgrade over Base P5, it's still not even close to being a full price worth upgrade, at least in my opinion. The basis of the story isn't changed basically at all, so you still have to go through the same 70-80 hours.
    That's why I give it only a 9/10.

New storyark is OK and has its own unexpected turns , but overall fells a bit out of line, like the story was forced to continue and received one more all-or-nothing epic final battle. Imo it felt victim to great original ending.

When Royal was announced I thought how could the possibly top it and improve on such an amazing game? Well they did, and here is why I think so. However, I'm not going to say it was completely perfect, but then again the vanilla P5 wasn't either.

First of all, they did improve various story elements from the first game, providing more clarity to the story, which I very much appreciated and they fine tuned that stylish graphical style. Atlus added 2 new characters and tie into the story perfectly in my opinion. In particular, the Counsellor who was a great add and his social link I found very interesting. Additionally, for those who are familiar with the original P5, making Akechi an actual confidant to invest time in was a great move as it deepens that bond between the main character and him. They added an 3rd semester which adds more to an already amazing story. Moreover, the boss of this semester was very memorable to me, the boss made me rethink the values of myself and the characters. Quite frankly, it was kinda emotional for me. Also I have to give credits to the amazing soundtrack! I didn't think they could top the soundtrack from the previous one, but in my opinion they did top it, only just slightly. One of the main reason why P5 is loved by most fans is the combat, they improved on various elements of the combat, adding showtime moves, technical damage and improving on baton passing. This made combat a lot more fun and stylish to say the least.

To the reasons why the game just fell short of a perfect 10 for me, I wanted to talk about the new semester they added. Don't get me wrong, I loved that they added an additional semester but it feels a bit too short for my taste, it doesn't really feel like all the other semesters in the game. I felt there wasn't much to do in this semester, maybe because I've maxed all social links by this time. Not a big issue but something to keep in mind. The last, but minor, issue I had, was with the new updates to the combat, I felt like it made it too easy if you know how to exploit the many systems it has. Baton passing with other members of your party can now be upgraded to deal more damage and technicals too. I found myself upping the difficult to the max just for more of a challenge.

Overall, I love this game and it does a lot to improve on the original game. It does have issues that makes it fall short of a perfect game for me but I think the best parts of this game made me forget most of it. If you wish to buy this game full price, great! But if you wish to wait for a sale or even just buy the original game, can't say it's a bad idea. The original game is just as amazing.

I am a real sucker for a well put together jrpg. The game is stylish, but so was persona 5, so no surprise there. The new addition to the story fit in well, and the redesigned palaces were a lot of fun. Atlus would be on point if they would stop making nickel-and-dime style dlc and start focusing more on sequels of their flagship games instead of spinoffs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Persona 5 is a great game, but Persona 5 Royal really touches up on areas that they really helps improve on the game play. It even allows to have access to some more character interactions then before with previous characters. If you do have a concern if you should play the original Persona 5, you don't need to. If your budget is something you worry about though, you could still go for the first Persona 5, but Persona 5 Royal is just a better upgraded version. The reason I am not giving it a 10/10 is because [Minor Spoilers] they do not really change anything from the first games story except add a new character and change Akechi's confidant from being story progression to doing it in your own time, and this isn't bad, but besides the third trimester, you could just play Persona 5 for the same story and a cheaper price. However this does not mean Persona 5 Royal is not worth it as it has some quality of life improvements and gets rid of some tedious parts from some of the palaces. The inclusion of will seeds was a nice touch palaces and gives you something extra to do, and if you're not a completionist you could just skip out on them, but the skills they give you for collecting all 3 in a palace could be quite worth it.
    -
Overall Persona 5 Royal is a great game and is totally worth checking out if you're a Persona fan or if you're looking for something new to try. Do note that this game is at least 100+ hours of play time you are looking at so you're not gonna finish this very quickly especially if you're new to the series.

    - Lots of different options to increase your social stats, so it's not just braindead farming untitl everything is maxed out. You can read books, play video games, go to the gym, the cinema, take part in burger eating competitions and lots of other things.
    - Great enemy design: Apart from bosses pretty much every minor as well as major enemy has a weakness that you can use to either negotiate to make them join you as a Persona for you to use or extort them for money or items. Bosses however are a different thing as most of them don't have a weakness, but you can still inflict status ailments on them and have a chance for a technical which basically works like "hit the weakness" attack, but with a lot more damage under certain circumstances.

    Cons:
    - You can't skip cut- and story scenes, all you can do is fast forward
    - You can revive everyone else, but if your main dies it's game over which is especially annoying in the early parts of the game because enemies can basically one-shot you like this.
    - Some characters join you really late in the game so they're naturally far behind on confidant levels which of course not a game breaker, but still a bit annoying since some of them only stay for a while.

    TL;DR
It's a fanastic game and if you're into turn-based rpgs this is the one where you absolutely get your moneys worth. I've spend well over 200 hours on Persona 5 and my playthroug on Persona 5 Royal will probably also be around 100 hours. Platinum included, but still.

It's still fun, still addictive, the characters are still amazing, the final is great (with a bad guy who is really interesting in his motivations). Atlus made it again! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you were a fan of the original Persona 5, then this game is definitely for you! The plot doesn’t change much up until the new 3rd semester, but there are a lot of new minor additions and expansions that make this game experience much better. The only reason I didn’t rate this a perfect 10 out of 10 is because of the “animated” ending. I don’t understand why the final boss is a taxi driver in the end and also if you were like me and romanced the new character, she isn’t there on the last day and acts like she doesn’t know you in the ending which was a little weird considering how much screen time she got with extra scenes throughout the game. Other than the questionable animated ending, this game was perfect. Expand

Everything from the characters, the style, the music and the combat instantly clicked with me. Certainly not a flawless masterpiece, but its issues are pretty easy to ignore when everything else is of such high quality. Hearing the announcement of an updated re-release of the game with new content, characters and quality of life changes made excited all over again. I'm happy to say that Persona 5 Royal is still well worth the purchase, especially if you haven't played the original up to this point.

The core story of P5R is essentially the same as last time. You play as a ragtag team of misfits that gain incredible abilities and use them to change the hearts of corrupted adults. You explore various dungeons within an allotted time period, while also juggling your school work and social life. There are many unique additions made to the story, however. There's a new girl in town named Kasumi, a gymnastics prodigy, and Dr. Maruki, the newly hired school councilor. While not going into spoilers, the two slowly begin to play an integral role in the story. There are also new places to explore around the city with new hangout spots for you and your friends, and a few of the characters even have updated arcs that you can engage with. There were even improvements made to the localization and additional dialogue was recorded where needed. Following the completion of vanilla, you will also be treated to an additional month and dungeon, adding on another 10+ hours of gameplay. The same story issues that were present in the original (excessive repetition, forced drama, overly explaining things) are sadly still present in Royal, but they don't ruin what is ultimately an engaging, character-driven narrative filled with some of the most likeable and fun characters in an RPG. Voice acting continues to remain top notch and the incredible soundtrack is still a joy to listen to.

The changes also extend to the gameplay as well. As far as dungeons are concerned, they aren't too heavily modified outside of the addition of grappling hooks (which honestly don't add to much but does aid in sneaking up on enemies), and hidden Will Seeds that you can collect and exchange later for items. Battles, on the other hand, have received a noticeable upgrade. The baton pass mechanic that allows you to switch to other party members after exploiting a weakness is now unlocked from the get-go rather than building up confidants with each party member to unlock them. There are also several new stylish showtime attacks where two party members can pull of a powerful, often ridiculous finisher that can deal serious damage to enemies. The combat was already great before, but these additions make it all that much sweeter. The Velvet Room has also received a few new upgrades. There's a new Alarm fusion mechanic where, every time an alarm goes off, you have the chance to fuse together more powerful personas. The catch here is that you can only perform each type of fusion once before things start to get unpredictable. There are also additional challenges you can complete in the Velvet Room that offer additional rewards. The procedurally generated dungeon Mementos introduces Jose, a kid that will offer you items and buffs in exchange for flowers and stamps scattered about (as well as the aforementioned Will Seeds). He's not really integral to the story, he's simply there to make exploration and leveling up much easier while you're down there. Max out EXP percentage gain as early as possible. It will make level grinding so much easier. Sad to say, however, that you can no longer cheese the Reaper (boo).

Persona 5 Royal is everything that made the original great made even better. It is by far the best version of the game, and anybody who hasn't already experienced it should definitely do so, especially if this is your first time experiencing the game. It remains as one of the best RPGs of its generation, and high bar for other JRPGs to meet.

However this isn't perfect, mostly due to the writing. Too many meaningless dialogs make this game fell like there's too much side content. The overall experience results slowed down and it's way too long.

Many players may lose interest towards the 6/7 palace, and now there are 8 of them plus a big dungeon (Mementos)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, I played Persona 5 Royal and persona 5. I viewed some bad votes, but they are nonsense: someone said that is the vanilla game but with dlcs, but it isn't correct. Persona 5 Royal is something very new, with awesome mechanics and is impossible to make the royal game something like a dlc. I don't give 10/10 only 'cause the difficulties levels was something strange: the mercilles mode was a normal mode but you have more crit chance . I loved special attacks they added,' cause is a mechanic that help a lot. I love all the new secret bosses and I love the Maruki arc. I think that Atlus made Maruki like better Akechi,' cause Akechi was an orribile pg. One other thing that I liked is that now akechi confidant is normal, now he' s a real rival and in the Maruki's arc an ally. I think they did something wrong with Kasumi/Sumire, 'cause they presented her to you like a new phantom thief, but then you play her only in the final palace.

One of the best games I have ever played and probably the best JRPG game out there, imo. It's not just a repackaged version of Persona with a few more hours of content thrown into it just to make it better. It doesn't stray from the original game but adds upon it.

Again, you start the game as Joker, leader of the Phantom Thieves of Heart. The game starts you off at Sae's Palace, with the rest of the Phantom Thieves (Ryuji, Morgana, Ann, Haru, Yusuke, Makoto, and Futaba) guiding you to the exit. Nothing too special early on, although the fight scene was shortened. During the escape the game has you use the, oh so satisfying, hook feature. A very welcome addition to the game. You also meet a new ally, although the game doesn't reveal her name during that escape, it is later revealed to be the Faith Confidant, Kasumi (who is really Sumire but I won't go into further details). After fighting alongside her, she tells you to move and she can't really do anything other than stall as she's not a member of the Phantom Thieves.

Then as you make your escape the cutscene happens, you're apprehended, and then grilled by Sae. "Butterfly" Lavenza floats around and tells you that you have a slim chance of beating the "game". All still very similar to the base game.

True to the game you meet Confidants. Some become your allies such as the Chariot (Ryuji) to the more of a support in the Hermit (Futaba). There are also others who help in different ways such as the returning Confidants, Takemi (Death), and Sojiro (Hierophant) to the new Confidants in Maruki (Councillor) and Hifumi Togo (Star). Yes, the Arcanas are back with some getting minor changes to major overhauls.

As I said before the palaces also make a return and a new palace also appears if you manage to follow the criteria to reach the new third semester (more on that later). The palaces too have also been tweaked. New boss fight animations have been added but not so much that it feels completely different from the original game. The introduction of "Will Seeds", although sometimes hard to find is another great addition. I spent a total of about an hour looking at walkthroughs to find where exactly some are located and sometimes can be a bit of a grind to get to but the bonus they give is worth it. The grappling hook lets you traverse places you can't normally reach.

I mentioned a third semester. Although, I would say probably the weakest part in Persona 5 Royal, it's needed to get the "true ending" as P5R gives you many alternate endings the good ending or the bad ending if you didn't meet the requirements for the third semester. I had to replay the whole game twice as I didn't bother forming a bond with Akechi until it was too late. There is also the good-bad ending, the bad-bad ending, and the true ending. It was fun running around the final palace, taking out shadows, and teaming with Goro Akechi who has abandoned his "Robin Hood" Persona for the darker "Loki" and Sumire **** along with the rest of the Phantom Thieves. I thought that the final boss fight was kind of dumb, especially when Joker has a fist fight with the boss after both had used up their Persona power. I also enjoyed getting the third stage of each of your allies' Persona, when the first stage of an ally's Persona fuses with the second stage. This can only be done in the third semester.

I was again fascinated with the fusion of Personas. It took hours but I was able to finally fuse for Alice, Lucifer, Metatron, and Satanael. All of which I was lucky enough to get Almight Boost, Almighty Amp, Divine Grace, and Victory Cry passive skills.

Mementos was also changed. You now have the opportunity to trade in stars to a wandering boy in Mementos to change the cognition of Mementos or trade for useful items. Very useful for increasing exp gain, money gain, or item drop in Mementos.

Overall, Persona 5 Royal is an adventure that shouldn't be missed whether you are new to the series or have played the original before, there's something for everyone. The replay value is also amazing as the option for new game + is there once you completed the game. Also, if nothing else you can romance a different girl or girl(s) per playthrough.

    Final Verdict:
    Story 9/10
    Battle 9.5/10
    Features 9/10
    Animation 10/10
    Voice Acting 9/10

Make sure you play this jewel of a game and remember, Take Your Time.

Persona 5 Royal is(and I really need to emphasize) still a REALLY good RPG and a must-buy for fans of the genre(especially if you played the original). The game's title is exactly what this game is, an upgrade in almost every single way just as its predecessors did like P4 Golden. However, if you played the original and didn't really love it, you're not going to find much else here.

I'd also like to say that I highly recommend playing the game on the hardest difficulty as the QoL improvements kind of make the game a cakewalk otherwise

    PROS
    - Great QOL improvements
    - Additional story and characters are much appreciated and well-executed
    - One of the big parts of the game is no longer a chore to go through

    CONS
    - Little incentive to play if you didn't like the OG
    - Some to most of the additional story and character content don't appear until the end of the game
    - QoL improvements make vital parts of the game a cakewalk

The funky and jazzy upbeat music fit the mood very well, when either in the cafe or in a battle. As a musician, I was very impressed by how well made the tracks were. Apart from that, the story presentation and characters were great. I already love Persona's social sim mechanics, so that was still very enjoyable for me. The turn-based battle system was very entertaining like it was in the previous games. Negotiations were a nice addition.
Although the above-mentioned aspects were well-made, the story did not feel TOO satisfactory to me. This is of course a personal preference and may be different for other people. In the Persona series I really can't warm up to the "Friendship and love is power" message. I mean, I like the message but it's too highlighted for me. The story, in general, was OK but IMO it was too long without any big twists. The story was very consistent, I would have loved some exciting plot twists. Everything in the story came predictable to me and I was almost never surprised. In that sense, P5R was a downgrade from Persona 4 Golden, which had many surprising and unexpected moments for me.
The cons I mentioned were not a turn-off for me at all, I still enjoyed the game very much with engaging combat and social sim mechanics.

If I could say one thing I really didn't like about this version is how they ruined the difficulty of the combat. It's laughably easy now in royal. Hell the hardest difficulty is quite literally the easiest difficulty because of how much damage you can do with weaknesses. And even further, the new abilities you can get for certain confidants are downright broken. For example, one of ryuji's abilities that he can give you basically lt's one shot foes that are lower level than you which I really don't like. It takes away from the fun gameplay when you can instantly one shot enemies. Also another super broken one is one of the twins abilities from the velvet room. They give you a ability that lets you craft personas that are a way higher level than you. Which can fundamentally can just break the game by the fourth palace because you can just easily wield a persona you can get by like the 6th palace just by befriending the two loli twins, like come on that's wack imo. Ok rant over, like don't get me wrong I really like this game but the easy ass gameplay really keeps this game from a 10 for me. Like there's still a lot I like, I think Kasumi is a great addition to p5 and the third semester is a great addition as well. the visuals also are updated and look much better than base p5. I also loved they changed the palace layouts from the og p5 so they can still keep the experience somewhat fresh. Overall, p5r is a incredible game and I do recommend this game as the definitive edition of persona 5 and should be the version you could get. The first thing you should know about Persona 5 Royal is that it isn't a sequel or spin-off of Persona 5. It is, in fact, more of an expanded re-release of the original game with quality-of-life improvements, new mechanics & various additions to the story. So Royal does supersede the original game both in canon and as the superior version of the game.

As for thoughts on the game itself, the story is solid. The opening arc does a great job of easing newcomers into the mechanics & world of this game while also getting them invested in the plot & characters fairly quickly. The rest of the story is consistently pretty engaging, with the new Royal content being pretty seamlessly integrated with the original Persona 5’s story (until it isn’t, but at that point, it’s clearly supposed to be jarring for story reasons I won’t get into here) & building off of the original’s themes, at least to someone like me who didn’t play much of the original/vanilla Persona 5. The villains, while generally hate sinks with little nuance, are enough to keep you invested in the narrative & there are a couple of more nuanced antagonists later on. The game even manages to have quite a few tear-jerking moments.
There are some dry stretches though, with the section right before the Okumura arc being the worst part of the story, filled with Idiot Ball/Conflict Ball moments & generally less interesting events outside of maybe the Hawaii trip.

The Confidants, essentially a series of side-stories where Joker helps either his fellow Phantom Thieves or an eclectic set of his peers & down on their luck adults with their problems, are a mixed bag. Some have both an engaging arc & great gameplay benefits, some have one but not the other & then you have the ones that are completely useless and suck (LOOKING AT YOU OHYA). But this part of the game is definitely appreciated overall.

The combat is also a highly polished and smooth experience for a turn-based RPG. There is a certain flow & rhythm to the combat that makes even standard encounters engaging, something I can’t say about most turn-based RPGs. Although I will say that Mementos (a large, randomly-generated dungeon that you can access at almost any time) can get a little stale toward the end of the original game’s arc, but the new third semester added in Royal adds a new floor to Mementos that makes things a little more interesting again. Palaces on the other hand don’t get stale as there’s a lot more variety in what you’ll do in any given Palace & none of them outstay their welcome. My only real issue is that after the introductory Palace, none of the remaining ones (except maybe parts of the Okumura & Cruise Ship Palaces) really have much of a challenge when playing on Normal difficulty if you’re levelling certain Confidants (including ones you have to max out to advance to the third semester).

Outside of Palaces & Mementos, the life-sim gameplay sections are fun & interesting at first, but later on as you max out your social skills & Confidants, there really isn’t much to do. So that’s disappointing. Before that though it is a solid gameplay loop & I can see how it can become addictive.

As for the visuals, they really are as striking and distinctive as they are made out to be. It definitely has a sense of style & flashyness that sets it apart from other RPGs. And the music is also SO GOOD. Lots of bangers on this game’s soundtrack.

    Conclusion
Overall, Persona 5 Royal is a great JRPG that is an excellent entry point into the genre for newcomers & may go down in history as this generation’s Final Fantasy VII. But it’s not a perfect game. There are some balancing issues & a lack of things to do outside of dungeon crawling toward the end and the story has a couple rough patches, but this doesn’t stop it from being a phenomenal game that’s worth playing, especially now that it’s more accessible than ever.

Fixes a lot of my issues from the vanilla P5. And Kasumi is implemented way better than Mari ever was in P4G (still not ideal, but much better by comparison).

+ In an attempt to fix certain story things that feel unfinished in P5, P5R in some instances goes to far and feels like it loses the original message of P5.

+ Though I forgot to mention it with P5, AtlusNA's localization team is still doing the thing were they delete/change subject matter they deem 'problematic'. -- Don't do this. Censorship is bad regardless of what you are censoring, bc it can lead to people misusing that ability down the road.

If it's a flaw in the game, then let it remain a flaw. Pretending it's not there & giving the company money doesn't stop the company from doing that thing. It just makes them think you were ok with it enough to still spend your money on it.

I loved P5 with a passion, and really wanted to rate P5R 10/10, however I just can’t. I have no issued with the added mechanics, even if they make the game feel a bit too easy. If you didn't play original 5, pick it up. If you already did play 5, wait for a sale unless you actually liked 5. This feels more or less like a casual friendly game in especially when in comparison to other SMT titles. Persona 5 Royal is a step up from the original but not much else.

The best part though about this all was the Strange Journey DLC. Now that was epic. Not to mention Raidou Kuzunoha Outfits, Persona 3 Outfits, Persona 2 Outfits, SMT: IF, SMT:4 and Catherine Outfits are free this time. So you can hear some of the best battle themes now for free. If it wasn't for those I'd lower my score by 1. Some soundtracks are a hit but others are a miss.

P5R is a good game. A very good game, most of the time. But there's so much of it -- too much of it. It took me over 100 hours to get to the final boss, and by that time I had stopped caring. No doubt die-hard fans will claim this is my fault, or that I don't 'understand' Persona, but I think it's a valid problem.

The basic overworld-underworld setup is well-executed and fun, once you get past the early tutorials. The teenagers v adults conspiracy story is a bit predictable, but elevated by the RPG tasks of improving your characters at school so they can fight demons in the parallel universe. You have a limited amount of time to study, hang out, side-hustle and build relationships, and it's here that the game really comes alive. There are lots of NPCs and activities to engage with, and they suck you in.

It's in the dungeon worlds that things become progressively less interesting, though. The idea of battling villains in their own egomaniacal mental palaces is great, but in practice too repetitive. It involves jumping from hiding place to hiding place, working your way up to the boss and collecting 'Personas' along the way (a mix of Pokemon and Final Fantasy Summons). There are a few stand-out palaces -- Madarame's, or the casino -- but many others are bland, like the bank vault or spaceship.

And that's not even counting the grindfest that is the eternally winding Mementos dungeon. A chore.

I don't want to dwell on the negatives here, because so much of the main game is enjoyable -- well-designed, well-animated, with a lot to do. The game for me is a solid 8/10. But in my view, a game that's more than 100 hours has to really justify it, and I think at least 20 hours could have been cut with zero downside. This isn't a masterpiece, nor a classic in my view, but a very very good JRPG.

However there is a mistake in story line Haru says she is a 3rd year Helping out teachers on school trip then says that you a second year is older??.

There is no way to dump girlfriends in this game and no way to contact people by phone and have them met you instead of you going to them would have been nice to have a way to go to any confidant at any time and have an app icon to display if you can do stuff with them that day (the fast travel map does this to some degree but doesn't show exactly who you can meet. It would be nice if you could turn off special attacks but still inflict the damage. Some cut scenes in game don't change based on who your in releationship with which means you don't get into real conflict due to comments of so called friends (e g ryuji hitting on ann for example when she is your girlfriend , and your girlfriend not commenting when you say something about other girls due to ryuji. E.g No one on team knows if your dating someone. It would also be nice if you could set rush attacks to either attack or magic attacks. The improvements in this game include more and new fusion mechanics, new monsters, improved cut scences , palace redesgins , more useful menmentos , new attack moves, improved story locations. New confidants . For example when we went to the beach with futaba i was already max rank with Ann and in romance with her but game still made me hint on other girls at beach with the other males on my team, there was no option to decline this and in real life it would upset your girl if you got caught its like encouraging cheating.

The palace designer thing is interesting its just a shame you can't set up boss fights and things inside it and fight in your own palace and others in a sand box mode where you can edit personas /special attacks (create your own attacks) set the damage of attacks , set the hp of the boss etc, set up what status moves it can use , what weaknesses it has and change its cosmetic colouring .. (I haven't really explored this 100% yet so i might need to change this part of the review.) . I do kind of which they had left the reaper weather aligment effects in as it is a away to power level characters they could have balanced this by making reapers only appear when you have no requests in mementos making you waste a day on it Finally i wish they had made a new part of the story when you have to finish 2 palaces in a certain time frame (where competing one basically has you fail the other for some extra consquences or something. The game is almost at perfection levels.. Game is great however i am just stating possibilites for even further improvement. (Finally for a persona 6 its a shame we can't bring back past characters from p3, p4 and p5 and imply that all of the events from each took place at the same time.)

The game is an all around improvement over the original in nearly every way. The new palace has an incredibly interesting an emotional story. However, its ending was very weak. The final boss is 3 phases except 2 of them are pretty much scripted. Joker says one of the corniest, most out of place one-liners I've ever heard and apparently Akechi is somehow still alive even though it contradicts the entire final palace. Overall, despite its flaws, its still a great game that I would recommend to anyone. Not just fans of the genre. Expand

One of the best games ever. But the original P5 was a better experience over all. The new ending of P5R doesn't fit in the whole game. The game is with 130h way to long. The new music was the best of Royal. I don't need the extra content. And I say that although P5 is one of my favorite games.

If you played P5, you don't need P5R.

It's got fun characters, punchy combat with a good amount of depth, very engaging levels to traverse your way through, and a very engaging calendar system which asks you to ration out your time in the game wisely and leads to it's own level of depth. The games major flaws are all found in the generally lack luster writing. While this writing is fun in the moment as you listen to characters banter back and forth, it has problems with several major problems. These include plot holes, contradictions to it's own themes (such as how Ryuji, an abuse victim, is beaten by his own friends at least once as a joke. Or maybe how Ann, someone whose story revolves around how she has to stand up to a rapist and prove herself as not an object, spends the next arc of the game being blackmailed into sexual harassment. This is also played off as a joke and characters will continue to joke about it several times later on) and the games need to hold your hand constantly. You can't go 10 steps in this game without someone stopping you in your tracks to tell you how to open a door or something. The final level added as an addition in The Royal is quite a standout, however, doesn't quite reach it's potential due to it's placement *after* the game's climax. It can make the game feel quite drawn out. Overall, the good still outweighs the bad. This game is surely worth trying, even for those who aren't fans of the genre. It's good, relaxing fun. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR Newcomer? Buy it. P5 owner? Wait.

I'ma be honest. I have a love-hate relationship with base Persona 5. Although the graphics are incredible (the best looking SMT game until SMT5 comes out) and the soundtrack's a banger, the story, characters and social links are all a**. Base P5's story is really predictable and it's by far, the worst SMT story I have ever seen. Like Persona 4, the characters are all braindead (minus Haru, Futaba and maybe Akechi?) and rely on optional social links. Remember Okumura's Palace in base P5? Yeah, terrible. And let's not forget about Morgana. He sucks. F****** Teddie is more tolerable than him. IMO, base P5's severely disappointing. While it's good in some parts (Kamoshida), the overall game is worse than most of the Persona series and all of the mainline SMT games. Now, you may be wondering "Bet, there's gonna be a version similar to P3 FES and P4G that fixes all of the problems that ruined P5." You're right. That's where the royal treatment comes in.

Persona 5 Royal is essentially a rerelease of P5 with new content and QOL changes. The new characters are great, except for one. Jose wanders around Mementos helping you out. You're able to craft items via flowers and can trade in will seeds (new collectable in palaces). He's useless imo, you can just remove him from the game and it will literally be the same. Kasumi* is the "main addition" in P5R, like Marie in P4G, the Answer in P3 FES and FeMC in P3P. When she was introduced, I found her kinda unlikeable like Marie because she was just there and served no purpose to the plot. But once you get to September/October her story arc finally develops and we finally know her past(let's just say, it's pretty dark, check 1). Overall, she's a great addition to the cast (about that, it still relies on slinks, just not as much as base P5). As for Maruki(the therapist), he's the best written character/antagonist in years. YEARS. The last time we got a fantastic Persona character was Akihiko from Persona 3 and that was in 2006. It's been 14 years since we got a well written character and they finally did it. Great job Atlus.

About those QOL changes and the other new additions, there are a lot of them and they're really good. For instance, the game is now PS4 Pro enhanced (It runs at 4K30) which is a plus if you have a 4K TV. You have your own palace where you can look at character models, listen to the OST and play President with your fellow comrades. Kichijoji, an iconic area in the MegaTen series, make its first appearance in the Persona subseries, where you can go to a bar and play darts and billiards. Ammo is restocked after every battle (I honestly hate this change because I kinda like using the limited resources I have to defeat the dungeon). Haru and Akechi are much more likeable now because of their extra screen time, especially Akechi. And finally, Morgana, the annoying sped cat, is much less annoying now. He'll give you more time to do stuff now instead of asking you to go the f*** to sleep. This should be a 10, right? Nope.

Most of P5's major problems are still here. LIke base P5, all of the characters (minus the same 3 I mentioned before plus 3rd Semester Kasumi and Maruki) heavily rely on leveling up their Social Links. Although the 3rd semester plot's amazing, everything before it is mostly the same(pretty predictable) but with better pacing and the addition of Kasumi and Maruki as NPCs. Morgana's still a r******* p**** and Okumura's Spaceport, the worst dungeon in any SMT game, remains untouched. For me, it's a solid 9/10 for me. It improves upon the original source and adds a bunch of new stuff so that it feels fresh and not just a "Persona 5 Rerelease". However, there's one thing that might make longtime Persona fans wait a while and why my score's an 8 instead of a 9: The price.

I agree that this shouldn't be DLC or an expansion for base P5. It adds a bunch of new stuff and changes the overall experience of the game. But no way in hell am I paying $60 ($80 in Canada) for what's essentially Persona 5($20 rn) with 15-20 hours of new content. If they add in a prologue about Kasumi before she died or an epilogue about the Shujin Crew, including Futaba and Sumire, then maybe it's worth full price. But if you already own P5 and haven't preordered P5R but still want a game, buy a different game. I just can't recommend it at this price.

Overall, P5R is a great game and a great rerelease. Although the base game's problems still linger on, the addition of Kasumi and Maruki, plus the QOL changes and enhancements all make up for it. If this is your first time playing any JRPG or Persona, or if you're a veteran SMT fan dipping their toes into the Persona series, go for it. But if you already own P5, the amount of new content doesn't justify the hefty price tag. You guys should wait.

    * It's actually Sumire, who's the younger **** twin, the real Kasumi died in a car crash

If you played the origiinal person 5, and you were more indifferent to it or didn't love it, I would pass on this game.
    Longer review:

A lot of the negative reviews for this game come from the fact that they didn't feel that this game was worth the 60 dollar purchase after already buying g the original game. There is definitely plenty of new content, new places to explore new things to do. In my opinion, most of the new things in this game doesn't add that that much to the story line; if you are not a hardcore persona 5 fan. Sure you get a good amoutn of new options, but imo it wasn't significant enough for more casual fans to feel like they're playing a different game. Now, tbf, I wasn't super upset at that becuase I really enjoyed the main game but I can see why some people will take issue. One thing I did dislike was imo a lot of the new content made you even stronger, which kinda makes most of the game easy. I don't think persona 5 orginal was a hard game at all, now it's borderline like super easy. I would say it's almost mandatory for a returning player to play this game on Hard diffculty. Now that value for you will ultimately determine your thoughts on the main game.

On the persona 5 royal extra content, there are some extra content at the end that I really liked, and I really liked how the game ended and stuff. I think these spots were done pretty well by ATLUS. I was glued in the final story moments and thought it was very well done. I won't be more specific because of spoiler concerns. There was a couple spots in Royal that I didn't really like. For example, the new character, Kasumi isn't really playable for tbh a huge portion of the game. and when she was so advertised so hard, I wasn't kinda upset she didn't play a larger role.

Definitely a mustbuy if you liked the orginal, however if you didn't, you can pass on this one. I can understand why some people would think this game is too similar to the orginal and be kinda upset. I don't agree with it, but I can somewhat understand their view point.

Point is: I played through all of em and persona 5 was just not what I thought it was going to be. Of the new age persona’s, that being 3 and up, I thought that 5 was the weakest link. As a result of which, I was pleasantly surprised by Royal which I think changed alot of what I hated about P5. However, the controversy comes from if these changes warrant a 60 dollar game, and hopefully I will be able to answer that question in this video. As always, I rate my games on a 3 point rating and purchasing scale, and that grade is justified by the four categories of gameplay, art, music and story, with some intangibles thrown in at the end. The gameplay is very similar to that of the first game, with the key differences now being some quality of life changes in the sense of the guns and bullet usage, and morgana allowing freedom. These changes definitely sparked a vast improvement, and while they made me feel a little bit more OP than the first title, but the challenge is still there especially on the harder difficulties and later game content. When it comes to the art, this is not a 10, this is THE 10. This is the poster child for what art should look like in games of this caliber, the art is smooth, beautiful, not overbearing and adds to the ambiance of the setting and characters. So when it comes to the music, there are definitely some changes from the first game. There are more tracks now, and there's a new preemptive strike song called take over, I didn't like it at first to be quite honest but now im in love with it. Last surprise has remained as the main battle theme, for those of you that love the original work. The acid jazz adds to the ambience as well, and its lovely to see that the Persona series has continued that music style. Finally is the story, which is largely the same up until the new added content that you unlock by doing certain social links. The new social links definitely provide really good background, development and depth to the characters, but it still may be the weakest story of the new gen personas. The big controversy of this game is something I want to get to now: and that being if it is worth it being a new standalone title and not just some DLC expansion type. The new thieves den mechanic is alot of fun and great for completionists like myself to get statues and music of the events. The biggest issue with this is that you cant see your friends, so you cant really flex off your work. Besides that, theres the new added trimester which does add gameplay and some new characters as well, but it is very hard to say if it warrants a new 60 dollar purchase.
After weighing everything, my final consensus is this: if you haven't played the original, this is the copy to get. Its advancements are noticeable from the first work, but if you have you can just watch the new content on Youtube and get the same experience. All in all, Persona 5 Royal was a very enjoyable experience, but the issue of it being a full standalone title remains. Its a solid 8.8/10, and I very much enjoyed it over the original, even if I do think that Persona 4 Golden is the better game all in all.

The original game is there with a few improvements that do make the game more enjoyable, the changes to mementos does improve it even though relatively minor. When the new content eventually takes centre stage, it really is decent, and there is a good amount of it, There is a couple of new characters each properly fleshed out and do fit into the story to the most part. But they do feel like much more minor characters than they should be
There are a couple of things added to the palaces which just feel like they were added for the sake of it, the grappling hook mechanic for example was only added to change the layout of the classic palaces slightly. But functionally its just a different form of climbing.
The game is quite fun and the additions are interesting and the new story elements are decent when you eventually get to the meat of them.
If you played persona 5 i struggle to suggest this at full price but if you’ve never played it, play this one, its basically P5 with extra stuff and you cant really complain with that

The addition to the original Persona 5 is not enough for a full-price game.
However, the original P5 was good, and this game is also good.

Great JRPG in PS4. But it is quit boring for the people who already played Persona 5.

The original Persona 5 was a damn good game and Royal just adds a ton of improvements to it. Mechanical improvements, overall Quality of Life changes, Palace reworks and so on. One complaint i have is that if you played the base game you can clearly see what parts belong to the base game and what parts are from royal. The story flows pretty much the same until the third semester (which is the best part of the game by far by the way) so when you have moments that involve characters from royal it feels like an afterthought in way. I would have really liked it if the story incorporated the new content more naturally into the original story. But I gotta say i'm quite excited for the next Persona game since the writing on the new parts was quite the step up, overall I feel like the game is an 8.5 so i'll give it an 8, it would be a 9 or even 10 if the story was meshed up better in my opinion. Also maybe the 60$ price tag is a little too much ? Since the base game is already for about 20$ and you can probably watch the remaining 20 hours on youtube or something. I would personally but this game on 30$ or 40$. Expand

Still mechanically and functionally sound to this day. While this version is essentially 80% identical to the original Persona 5, for a new player this isn't a bad thing at all. It adds just enough new things for older players to go through a playthrough with fun, however after putting 200+ hours into OG Persona 5, this game was incredibly tedious to deal with in the story as I had to skipStill mechanically and functionally sound to this day. They are not worth rewatching for the very minor changes that are made to some of them. That said, the additional semester was all fresh and was just as good as the other Palaces were when I first played the original game. Expand

Very Nice Game, makes a lot of Fun. The Battle-System is simple but have a lot of littlte Features (I hope you get it)
Only the Tutorial is a little bit too long. But the rest is near to the perfect.
    JRPGs Fans must play

Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

This is not more of the same, this is not an optional add-on to the original game. This, my friends, is the perfect experience, down to the last letter, down to the last minute. Persona 5 Royal is a Japanese crown jewel.

All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
