No Man's Sky is a game that is not for everyone. I'll say this right off the bat. If you are expecting a CoD style pew pew space shooter, this is nit the game for you. The game mechanics are easy to figure out but the tech allows you to really customize your game play experience, and then completely change it on a whim. You could be a super-powered space marine fighting aliens on the planet or you could be a space pirate raiding freighters. Then the next day you could spend an hour exploring the underwater beauty of a planet-sized ocean. This is a game for people who don't want rails or safety bars. This is a game for people who want to explore and discover. The only reason I'm not giving it a 10 is that I think there is still some polish yet to come in future patches that will further improve the game experience. Expand

That said, as someone who has followed a development of the game for a long time, it is frustrating to see a lack of some of the features that were trailed in the build up. YET. The bug fixes are done, and I'm hoping to see some of them be added over the next few updates.

Unless you are absolutely sure I would wait a few weeks before buying this: it isn't yet finished, but what is there is amazing.

Good relaxing exploration game. I can sit down and discover new planets for an hour or two in the evening. Some are barren and unfriendly some are lush and filled with life. Is it intense and super on gameplay, no. However it's still an awesome experience flying around a universe filled with various animals, aliens, plants etc.

They are right in saying that every planet is almost different, the only differences I see in the lighting and the texture. To tell what a planet is like before I land on it for the first time is by looking at the plants eg some mushrooms tell me if the planet is toxic or nuclear. So to end this I'm saying it is good game but could of been better if one it was tested right and all the bugs were fixed. Expand

Update: Game is complete now. Worth the price, also its often is 50% off on Steam. Very fun as a solo player, I never got into multiplayer but its there. Very fun and relaxing game, get lost in the universe.

This game has the potential to be a great game, closing in on a 10/10. But this game was released too early in development, it's missing features that were presented by the dev, it's completely missing the most advertised and expected gameplay features. Yet, the game was still released, at full price $60. This is half of a game. It's an unfinished alpha preview. It should not be on store shelves for sale. It should be on Steam as an early preview for $15 or $20.

Now, I believe this game will get there, I believe updates will be released, features added, and this will evolve into the game I expected and was promised/advertised.

My review has to be on the game I have, not the game I want or look forward to. With that said this game gets a 5/10. It's average. Interesting and at times beautiful. Exploring new planets, building new technologies to visit more distant and varied star systems is exciting. But after a while the game becomes completely repetitive and lackluster. Without a solid story, without a worthy goal, without multiplayer, without any RPG game elements, there is really no motivation to continue playing once you've upgraded you stuff to the max.

My advice is to wait on buying this game, but keep your eye on it. When the features are added it needs to be a great game then buy it. For now, hold off.

I've played games for 40 years now, and relatively few have held my attention the way NMS does. It's not fair or even realistic to compare this game to others, such as Minecraft, unless it is in the context of it being something new and different. This is not a world-building game like Minecraft. It's not a story-driven FPS like Half Life. It's something all its own. Hello Games have created something very special in No Man's Sky, and it is unfair to give it low marks because it doesn't live up to the expectations of everyone out there that was looking for the 'be all and end all' universe sandbox game. Save your cries of "Sean lied to us!", and grow up. No Man's Sky is a work of art, and I am absolutely sure that Sean Murray and Hello Games are not done with their painting yet. Yes, it was probably released a bit too soon. Yes, it could use additional content. Yes, there are some bugs. But in the end, this game held the attention of a 50 year old rather jaded gamer, and I'm going back to play it again tonight. No Man's Sky is a GOOD game. Expand

EA and Activision would've abandoned this game right from the outset after failing so hard, but Hello Games stuck with it and with the NEXT update, it's finally looking like the game that everyone was clamoring for. Aside from about 20 trucks worth of bugs and crashes that the developers are thankfully releasing patch after patch for constantly, the game is a good bit of fun with lots of stuff to do and explore, even if the planets and gameplay can get repetitive.

If you were waiting for No Man's Sky to get good to finally get it, now's the time to do it. It's only going to keep getting better as the bugs are worked out and the system becomes more streamlined, and Hello Games continues to keep adding more content completely free over the course of only weeks. If you already were burned, however, I can't really convince you to come back if you don't want to. I didn't buy into the hype to begin with because I'm one of about three people on the planet who has long-term memory and pattern recognition, so I knew from the announcement that the game was going to crash and burn just like 99% of the others do.

tl;dr, if you were waiting, get it now, but only when it's on sale, and if you were already burned, feel free to never touch it ever again unless you're generous and feel like giving them a second chance, because to their credit, they HAVE worked their asses off for the last two years to try to make up for Sean Murray's blatant lies.

The game's graphics are very vibrant in colors and there is a TON to do. In fact you are early in the game just trying to get your ship working and getting more slots to carry more things. However the game feels more like a mining game than anything else. You go somewhere, you need stuff, you find the elements. I have never played Minecraft but I imagine this is a lot of what it is like having seen others play it and talk about it. While this may seem boring to some, keep in mind the items are constantly changing as is the terrain, environment, creatures, and goals. The game is really yours to decide what to do but has a main story. I enjoy the mining aspect but find the one thing no one mentions that leads me to believe some of these reviews are written without playing the actual game as their details are completely lacking of what they don't like. For me it is not having an ability to GO BACK TO YOUR WAYPOINTS. You heard me right, a game this huge has NO WAY to backtrack. That to me seems like a huge facepalm that the developer's did not put that in. So you essentially are 'tagging' places you have been for no real reason except to get points for trade. You better have a good memory of the terrain or you are not getting back. This is extremely frustrating as I found a better 'multi tool' in the first world but needed more coin to get it. Blast off to the space station, trade, come back and .... What the! I can't find where I found the gun at and now randomly I get no settlements that have multi tools. That to me makes the game incredibly frustrating as I want to get better weapons, I can mark where they are, it serves no purpose to find it later.

But the overall fun of the game is good and I would give it a B. I would give it an B+ if they fixed this stupid bug. But the game is fun to play, renders fine for me, and is as huge as listed. So far it is fun as I think the negative hype train was just expecting the coming of Christ from this game and it is not that, but it still is very fun.

The only negatives I'll mention is the tedious nature of trying to get to the center. The map and distances were often unreliable. The route to center should take into account your max warp distsnce. Guessing and extrapolating the best place to go got old...fast. That's my only negative.
I will never understand the hate for this game. To me people bought into the hype without knowing a damn thing. This isn't supposed to be Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous. From what I've read and seen those have plenty of issues as well. NMS's problem was hype. I personally blame Sony, and Sony deflected it back to HG when they know they (Sony) rushed HG for release. Sony is also responsible for most of the hype.
I've been let down by a lot of games like so many have and I cannot fathom the hate train here. And I don't want to.

When I purchased this game I knew NOTHING about it. I did not read the reviews or hear any hype before the release. To me it looked like a cool game so I tried it out and was pleasantly surprised.

Now after reading the negative reviews and watching Sean Murry's promises I do agree that the game was to be something much better. People had hoped for more. However, after seeing the Foundation Update and hearing that the team is working hard on future updates I am excited.

I'm sure the team had a ton of pressure from Sony to release the game on the promised date. I have faith they will end up with the game they promised, if not something better.

As it stands now, after the Foundation update the game is very nice to play. The planets are beautiful and are a joy to explore....even the dark cold ones are fun to play and fun to try to survive in. The animals are funny looking and occasional attack you but all very amusing.

One thing I want to point out that not many people are taking about is the FEEL of the game. When you enter the atmosphere of a new planet the joystick shakes...the screen shakes...it's loud.... I mean it's a really cool feeling. Also flying around in your ship is also a very cool feeling. There are many things that just FEEL good when you play.

I know the game is not what is promised but if you are NOT expecting a thing it's quite enjoyable and beautiful. Like I mentioned, the game will ONLY GET BETTER! Sure, at this time it does not offer multiplayer or some of the visuals are a bit repetitive but overall Hello Games made a pretty cool game and it will only get better with the updates. Another thing is that this is not Call of Duty, it's not a high pressure crazy first shooter game. But for what it is, it's pretty cool.

This small team is busting their butts to offer new updates constantly. They are even hiring new people now if you look at their website. I am confident Hello Games will come through with some incredible updates. Hopefully, the damage is not too too bad so they can come out of this. Remember some games including Destiny were not so great and look at them now.

Good luck to Hello Games and their effort on delivering many updates in the future!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Obviously underrated but it's still a fun and enjoyable game. There is actually lots to do. A good questing system where you can either befriend or make enemies with 3 Alien species, and lots of starships and mods to augment your style.

    THE BAD:
    - Not much to do as of yet. (HOWEVER the devs are constantly making updates to the game. Which are all drastically changing and good with balancing.)
    - Galactic Market feels skimpy. There are only a set number of items for some reason. The items need to be unlimited and on a rotation for rare elements/mods/equipment. That way you will still have to farm some, but if you need Plutonium, you aren't limited to the 34 pieces that they sell. Which isn't even enough to fuel your ship for ONE takeoff.
    - Bad inventory slot balance. A starship should be able to hold more depending on size. And the smaller ships should be able to have more powerful weapons. But less slots. The slots for mods and the slots for inventory should be separate. That way mods aren't taking up valuable inventory space. Freighters also hardly have any room at all. They only have 48 slots at the MOST. Which you would think a ship designed ONLY TO TRADE would have MUCH more inventory space.
    - Hardly a challenge. EVEN WHEN YOU DO HARDCORE SURVIVAL, the game still isn't challenging after the first 2 hours of gameplay. Now it might be basic luck that I was on a planet full of civilization and rare minerals, but I still find the game relatively easy compared to DayZ, ARK, Don't Starve, and other Sandbox farming survival games
    - No multiplayer. You'd think with a universe this large and expansive, you would allow someone to experience it with a friend. But thats not the case. A friend could make mining those ridiculously large Gold nodes with half the time. Like even with a maxed out mining laser, it takes like 30 minutes to harvest all the Gold on one standard node. And it's only worth 2 million units. And you might think thats a lot, but when you get to 30 slot ships or even basic inventory, 2 million units came from about 2k Gold ore. That isn't a lot at all.
    - No true quest. (SPOILER) No ending. The Center of the Universe only gives you a cutscene for about 3 minutes and then you start all over again with broken equipment and not a dime in your name. Very anticlimactic. And makes you wonder why you spent hundreds of hours to even afford to get to the center of the universe. It wouldn't be a problem if you learned some kind of epic mod, or some kind of hidden knowledge, or if there was a secret to unlock--- ANYTHING. But there's not.
    - The 3 Alien Races don't feel real. They don't do anything but sit in one place forever and on. They have no walking paths, they have no other purpose except to be tradesmen and to give tasks to increase your Faction with their species. It would be badass if there were wars with the Atlas sentinels, or if there was anything you could actually do with the Aliens. but there isn't. It would also be awesome to be able to have henchmen. Like hiring mercenaries, even for bodyguards while in Space, because once the Atlas Ships are on you, from an accidental shot, or a badly timed photon blast, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get them off of you until you retreat to safety in a space station.

    THE GOOD
    - VAST, EXPANSIVE, BEAUTIFUL universe filled with several QUINTILLION species of plants, animals, and flora.
    - HUNDREDS of mods to customize your character, ship, and freighter to your liking.
    - THOUSANDS of hours worth of gameplay (Not talking about exploring everything, you will never be able to do it in your lifetime. but you can reach the Center of the Universe, and get max level everything in about a years worth of playing)
    - Lots of different materials and things to collect.
    - Very nice looking Starships, Multi-Tools, and Freighters to buy all without spending real money.
    - Very good with the Quests for base building.

All in all a very nice purchase for $25. I got it on sale at Walmart for $15. You just have to wait because the game is still in beta. More like Alpha. At the same time though they shouldn't have even released the game until it was finished. Otherwise they would just get negative reviews through and through and nobody would buy this game. But it has AMAZING potential to be the best game ever made.

The NEXT version of NMS is pretty amazing for someone who has never played it before! The look of the game, the retro 1950's inspired art work, the sound, and the sheer scale make this a special experience. I am a casual gamer, not being interested in the deeper aspects of mining and gathering essential items, but I can see that here there is a lot to do here... If your'e like me go for the creative mode, which is a god mode allowing you to explore freely with no need to harvest raw materials etc.

Why 8? It is confusing at times, being unclear what your actual objectives are, and secondly the frame-rate at certain points drops so low that is for a few moments unplayable...

Definitely worth a shot if on discount.

Expand

After the latest updates the game really improved. For me No Man's Sky is a game I always hoped for. It's just a relaxing experience. Lay back and explore the universe. I have played this game from the beginning, and wow has it changed. The additional vr support is extremely emersive, and makes for a great time. Thanks for keeping up with the title Sean Murray.

Gotta have it to these guys. At first this game was terrible but after they fixed it i absolutely love the game. during their patches there were still many bugs and caused the game to crash but eventually most was fixed. i do have some issues but overall this game has been very fun, very different, and lost more to do.

Panorami spaziali fantastici. Personalmente credo sia stata una grande idea, un gioco dalle potenzialità incredibili ma scarno ed abbandonato a se stesso, certamente una buona base per un titolo futuro, comunque unico nel suo genere

I was playing Destiny 2 at the time and after finishing all the Lightfall expansion had to offer, I was just really starting to get fed up with the over monetization of the game, constantly paying more and more for recycled content, **** game balancing, and the complete garbage state the pvp was in. All multiplayer games started feeling like complete rip offs for the amount of monetization of literally every element of the game (literally every customization is being monetized by live service and multiplayer gaming companies), so I decided to go back into single player games for a bit, to take a break from all the drama and nonsense. I decided to comeback to No Man’s Sky years after giving up on the game around launch. What a journey this game went through. From being complete garbage at launch, to a great experience now. The sheer amount of content that was added to the game completely free of charge is mindboggling to me. They added great base building mechanics, a compelling story line, managing your own fleet of freighters, customizing and building inside your freighters, derelict freighters to explore, community zones, etc. I can honestly say this game has much creative depth to it as a game like Minecraft. I love the turnaround this game has, and it really is a testament to how a good game and live service is meant to function. Hats off to you Hello Games, you did not succumb to corporate greed and irresponsibility. Expand

It revolves around exploration, mining, trading and upgrading while following an interesting and engaging central story. It's a slow burn and not for everyone but other than a few quality of life issues and some areas of repetition I found it a pleasure to play. I look forward to jumping back in when we get another big update. Expand

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
