All multiplayer games started feeling like complete rip offs for the amount of monetization of literally every element of the game (literally every customization is being monetized by live service and multiplayer gaming companies), so I decided to go back into single player games for a bit, to take a break from all the drama and nonsense. I decided to comeback to No Man’s Sky years after giving up on the game around launch. What a journey this game went through. From being complete garbage at launch, to a great experience now. The sheer amount of content that was added to the game completely free of charge is mindboggling to me. They added great base building mechanics, a compelling story line, managing your own fleet of freighters, customizing and building inside your freighters, derelict freighters to explore, community zones, etc. I can honestly say this game has much creative depth to it as a game like Minecraft. I love the turnaround this game has, and it really is a testament to how a good game and live service is meant to function. Hats off to you Hello Games, you did not succumb to corporate greed and irresponsibility. Expand

The various game mechanics are average at best and there are numerous time wasting gameplay (refining, piloting, excavating). I get the intent of giving a sens of grandeur to the entire world, but once you choose a destination and just travel for minutes, there kind of isn't any point to making it that long.

Anyway, even though the intent of the game is nice, I wouldn't recommend it, the implementation end up providing a somewhat dull experience.

BUT it's one of the most stunning beautiful and expansive games I've ever played and I've probably put more hours into this game than any other. If you enjoy exploration in games, this is the one for you!

There's a story, but it's pretty subpar to be honest and there isn't a whole lot special about the graphics. I wish there was a bit more diversity in the planets, as there's really only a few different biomes and any two planets of the same biome pretty much look identical. Still, there's lots of fun to be had and I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a space exploration type game. Expand

The designers could have crafted 5-15 beautiful and interesting planets with varied biomes. But instead we've got an infinite number of randomly generated planets, most of which inevitably wind up boring and empty.

So prepare to spend hours and hours and hours searching for a pleasant planet for your home base, only to find that once you've found one and started started building, you're in a constant struggle with your inventory size, the game's confusing mechanics, and refueling everything you own or use. Can't find a particular material on your planet? You'll have to fly off of yours, but oh wait no launch fuel. Oh wait no hyperdrive fuel. Oh wait can't find a planet with the material. Oh wait your mining beam is out of fuel. Oh wait you're out of storage space. It all feels much more tedious than in other survival games.

And once you've built your base, a couple cool vehicles, you realize - there's nothing of interest to actually be explored and there isn't much story to speak of. There are barely any threats to your health and safety, and the variations among different kinds of flora and fauna basically amount to: wow, a vaguely cow-shaped thing with longer legs than the last cow thing.

That's my 10-hr story with No Man's Sky. I tried. I really did. And I wanted to like it. Some people do find this infinite randomly generated space exploration thing interesting. But for everyone else, go play Subnautica, The Forest, Conan, Ark or The Outer Worlds, Mass Effect, Astroneer - really any other survival or space game instead.

For a game that launched in a terrible state the game has come a long way. I respect that the developers didn’t run away with the money and call it a day. The game has improved drastically over the years since launch and they have pretty much given us every promise even if they did take years to do so. I can say now that the game is finally worth the price of admission. I am currently playing the game on PS5 mainly through PSVR and it’s a surreal experience. Flying into a planet while burning through the atmosphere and then seeing the strange beauty of the planet through vr is spectacular. Then finding a perfect place to build a base overlooking a town that you are running is amazing. This game definitely isn’t for everyone but if you like exploration and discovery and you have the time to burn no man’s sky is a must purchase especially if you have a VR headset. Expand

This game is awesome! I don't understand why the score is so low but I'm assuming the majority of the negatives are from pre patched / updated versions. Have a blast playing online with my friends. Graphics are phenomenal. Just an all around masterpiece. Hello games deserves credit for turning this game around and delivering an amazing title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man’s Sky has been one of my favourite games to play on the ps4 since it’s release on August 9th, 2016. However like many others I was disappointed with how the game was first released as the gameplay wasn’t quite as advertised, but in my opinion it didn’t make it a bad game as No Man’s Sky still had plenty of new and innovative aspects of gameplay mechanics which made it the unique game it is. As-well the developers of the game showed they had their fans in mind when updating the game, as many of the updates massively overhauled the game visually, aswell as with gameplay mechanics by adding in multiplayer, and adding more story content(in which the storyline for the game is easy to follow and keeps the player immersed in the world that is No Man’s Sky). If you weren’t like me and gave the game a chance or were hesitant of buying the game from the reviews then I think you should give the game a chance in 2020 as since it’s release in 2016 it is almost like a brand new game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's far from perfect that's for sure, but some of the more recent reviews are either made written by gamers who haven't played more than a few hours (shakes beer) or gamers like Ianmack who clearly is lying, because in 100 hours of gameplay, I have never not found an animal. He probably didn't read that it is only found in the north or south emisphere...

What I miss and hope they will implement sooner or later are cities. What I think is really annoying is that sometimes the game gives you the option to scan a planet from space and right when you activate the scanner the option fades and you have to wait for the scanner to recharge. Another thing I would love to see, are snowy paradise planets. All planets with snow have automatically a harsh environment. What stands out in this game is the community. Never experienced such a helpful gaming community. The game is definitely worth it in 2021 and I am pretty sure that it will be updated a lot in the future, adding many more features.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but somehow you had to figure everything out yourself, which is cool in itself, but if you die several times at the beginning of the game because you're poisoned, burned or freeze to death, it's not that great, so I can understand why many stop right at the beginning of the game but if you master most of the beginning the rest of the game is all the better, really stunning planets and a feeling that is indescribable. While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
